A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure for over five years.

For farmers with small- to mediumsized herds, the technology is surprisingly inexpensive compared to other automation products.

The ‘YieldSense Connected’ app, developed by LIC Automation, has been available to a portion of the dairy farmer market for some time but it now includes new functionality to allow wider farmer appeal.

Farmers equipped with YieldSense in-line sensors can use the YieldSense Connected app to immediately identify the ‘passengers’ (low value/production cows) in their herds, along with identification of high-producing (high value) cows.

YieldSense is an automated in-line milk sensor that provides farmers with live yield and milk solid results.

Until now, the system’s marketability has been restricted to farmers with automated rotary-operated dairy sheds.

The YieldSense Connected app works by capturing information from the milk sensors, alerting the farmer of the results via their smart device.

Results include a summary of the bottom, and top performing individual cows in the herd.

Graham Cates, manager of a 300cow herd in Walton, uses YieldSense Connected to record the yield for each cow in his herd.

He taps into the technology for a 10day period each month.

“We record the alerts when they appear. Whenever we’re alerted, we go to the bail, get the cow number, and punch it into the phone,” Graham says. The information backs up animal management decisions.

“It makes our job easier, it is user friendly and fast, and now we don’t herd test. We make our decisions about what we’re going to do — treat, dry off, or cull.”

The app goes beyond individual cow results. Herd-level reporting is designed to provide a platform for

farmers to focus on herd improvement solutions.

A flashing light system in the milking shed is an optional extra. The lights provide milking staff with an additional visual alert — signalling the bottom — and top-performing cows before they return to the paddock.

Paul Whiston, LIC Automation chief executive, says the app is easily accessible — but even better — it makes leading-edge technology affordable for most farmers, particularly those with small to mid-size herds. “Up until now YieldSense has really only been available for farmers with rotary milking sheds that have an in-bail cow identification system.

“The YieldSense Connected app opens the technology up to the entire market, including farmers with herringbone milking sheds.

“YieldSense Connected, and the previously released CellSense Connected, are part of part of a strategy to offer farmers more choice and flexibility with the latest automation solutions.”

It is suitable for both Herringbone and Rotary milking sheds and connects to other LIC Automation products.

Mutant sheep opportunities

Research into ‘mutant’ sheep has AgResearch scientists eyeing up a greater understanding of what makes human hair curly or straight, and the potential for innovative new wool products.

Commonly known as Felting Lustre mutants, these sheep are rare and share the naturally occurring trait of straight wool, instead of the usual crimped wool.

“With these mutant sheep, we can for example look at twin lambs where one has straight wool and another crimped wool — or one animal that transforms from straight to crimped wool over time — and study the key differences,” said scientist Jeff Plowman.

“This can then be applied to our understanding of the differences in human hair. It’s an opportunity we would never have been able to get with human subjects.”

The work began in 2011, when a lamb with an unusual coat was brought to the attention of AgResearch staff involved in wool research. Its appearance was so unusual that the lamb was initially thought to be a cross between a sheep and a goat.

Part of this was because the lamb’s straight lustrous coat was reminiscent of an Angora goat.

Genetic testing showed it was 100 per cent sheep and its coat was the result of natural mutation.

“As a result, we started trying to locate more of these rare sheep, so we could study what makes them different

and how proteins in the wool affect the fibres,” Dr Plowman said.

“Thanks to the assistance of farmers who came forward with these sheep, we were able to do that. We have found they show a radical change in wool structure and properties that can be tied into specific protein changes.

“In some cases, the mutant sheep undergo a transformation where the straight wool suddenly switches to become crimpy as they mature.”

A HARDY BREED Shirley Jenkins is the secretary and herd registrar of the Welsh Black Cattle Society of New Zealand and she and husband Bruce moved into Welsh Black cattle in 1980 as an alternative type of stock for their 600 acres of rolling land, now reduced to 200 acres.

e farmed the family property that Bruce grew up on for some 40 years. It was originally Bruce’s grandfather’s property.

“We started with a Friesian dairy herd and went back into Jerseys. We then wanted beef cattle to go with the sheep running on the steeper 400 acres as well, and thought we would try a different breed of cattle to go with them,” said Shirley.

“The Welsh Black have a good reputation for being hardy and providing high quality meat and milk. Bruce and I started using the bulls to tidy up after AI for our dairy herd. They seem to be

getting more popular and we sell the bulls to dairy farmers.

“They are average sized cattle, about the same as a short horn — not great big huge things, but definitely not miniatures. They used to be dual purpose but with the increase of performance of traditional dairy breeds, they are now essentially a beef animal.”

Shirley says they grow well and the stock handle all weather and are versatile for grazing hard country and land with rough feed, and they are a good size for lifestyle block owners.

The meat has good flavour with nice marbling. “The cattle are bred all around

the country and there is a polled strain as well as the horned ones. They are a good breed for anything really.”

Last year the Welsh Black Cattle World Congress was held in New Zealand with 46 people visiting from across the world, including, Germany, Australia, United Kingdom, Luxembourg and Wales.

“They are still popular in Wales and have been cross bred with an exotic cow but the farmers there are going back to the original now. A Canadian visitor said they are great for the snow conditions where they live,” said Shirley.

“They are good for cold climates because of their thick winter coat. They need a shelter to hide from the wind but they don’t necessarily need housing in tough snow conditions as they hold their own heat longer than other breeds. They have very thick hides and like all animals they do need shade in the summer.”

In summer and in hot climates this coat is replaced with a smooth, glossy coat.

“Welsh Blacks are a true hill country breed of cattle and are generally easy calving,” said Shirley.

“Their history of being raised in harsh, outdoor environments and their ability to convert rough feed into weight gain and having a willingness to forage makes them an ideal animal for any property.”

The calves are known to be vigorous and hardy and do not present feeding problems in dairy operations.

The cows have a long, even lactation up to 300 days and they have a long productive life of 15–20 years.

“This hardy breed has much to offer modern farming systems with its ease of production and award winning succulent meat. For more than 100 years the Welsh Black Cattle Society has nurtured, promoted and sought to improve the breed — a job which is continuing.” Margaret and Edwin Foord have 40 head of cattle and say they like them because of their temperament.

“I was first introduced to the breed through some bulls my dad had. They

were older Welsh Black and they were very calm and mellow to be around,” said Margaret. “Our children mistook them for stumps in the bush and it was then that I got really interested in the cows. My husband and I foot farm so we have a lot to do with the cattle and interact with them. The more we walk and talk to them the more they trust us.”

Margaret says cattle they have brought in that had never been handled are now people friendly and as the years go on their progeny have become more trusting.

“We sometimes have open days with 50 people visiting and our cattle handle it. They grow well on moderate or rough tucker. At present we are clearing off the neighbour’s property getting rid of

the rank tough stuff including gorse and turning it back into pasture. “They are wonderful cattle. They grow well and we don’t lose as many stock because they are so hardy. We highly recommend these cattle for all types of farms, they suit hill as well as low country.“

BY ANN MORGAN Julie Insley lives with her herd of 32 llama on 26 acres of easy to flat land.

The land was originally developed for horticulture with a variety of shelterbelts and Julie found the property perfect for her animals.

Julie grew up in the dairy farming industry and like most farming children had a lot of contact with horses.

“I was involved in the horse scene and now I find llamas are really safe

in comparison to horses. Llamas don’t kick, bite, stomp or throw hissy fits like horses can.”

She has had her herd for 20 years and enjoys the fact that they are an intelligent animal.

“You have to learn all about body language and how to outsmart them.

They have a personal space and have to be trained to be touched.”

Julie says once trained they will go in the direction you want them to go in simply by moving your head or shoulder.

the shorter coat ones tend to be taller.

“We use ours for charity work including rest home visits, daffodil day collecting and fundraisers.”

A male llama is called a macho, a female is a hembra and a baby is a cria.

The gestation period is around 11 and a half months and up to a year sometimes.

“Some breeders want one baby a year and get the mothers pregnant again within two weeks of giving birth. We don’t do that to ours, we let them rest.”

Llama is not an eating meat although they were imported into Australia for colonial settlers but it is said the settlers did not like the taste.

“Those I know who have tried it have only ever tried it once — even dogs walk away. It has a very strong flavour.”

Julie believes llamas are good for lifestyle blocks as they are low maintenance. They only need to be shorn once a year, and if you only have a couple this can be done with a pair of scissors. Toenails can need trimming either six weekly or six monthly depending on the genetics.

“They love hills they can clamber up and they love to stand at the top and look at the view and see what is going on. They enjoy licking lichen off a rock and having rubbishy stuff to chew on like gorse and blackberry. We feed ours hay for roughage as we just have grass.” One of the biggest health issues

“Check with your local veterinarian if there are any cases in your area in sheep or cows. There is lots of information online or call the Llama Association for advice if need be.

“We feed ours zinc oxide mixed in their food when we know the season is approaching. Don’t take your eyes off facial eczema because they are very sensitive to it.

“Like humans, they have the fight or flight instinct. Flight is their first defence. They can run fast but if they are cornered and feel under attack they will stomp their front feet. They used to stomp on pumas which were their main predator.”

Julie says if any strange animal walks onto their land they will alarm call to let everyone in the herd know.

“A friend came to visit with their dog and one llama was in the house paddock. The llama looked at the dog and slowly walked away. Five minutes later 25 other llamas came back to the house paddock to sort out the dog. They are an amazing animal with looking out for themselves.”

There are approximately 1,500 llamas in New Zealand — they are kept more as a hobby. “They like working and getting out to do things — they don’t

like being stuck in a paddock and being ignored. They like people and are very understanding of them.

“It would be good if more people understood them as there is a lot to learn. Everyone should have a couple in their front paddock — they would learn a whole lot of new things.”

Mark and Paula Stone bought their dry stock farm in the Te Kuiti area in 2012 following a long career in the dairy industry. They chose the property because they loved the district and the surrounding areas.

T

he couple have five children. Two are farming, one is a primary school teacher in the Middle East and two are still at school. They also have four grandchildren.

“I have had a few different careers in my time but I mainly support Mark on the farm,” said Paula.

“It’s a nice change to be farming this way instead of dairying. It is more relaxed and we don’t have to get up and milk at 5am every morning.

When the couple first moved to the area Mark continued to share milk for eighteen months, commuting to Huntly whilst they set up their new property.

this farm when he was offered a position, as it was just a hop over the boundary fence.

“What more could you want,” said Paula.

“Mark and I were living the dream but unfortunately on September 9 last year Mark went to work as usual and I had a phone call to say that he had been taken to Te Kuiti hospital.

“Our neighbour Alan Curry found Mark wandering around the gravel road with his four-wheeler nearby. He was in a confused state and it was evident he had a head injury.

“Alan saved precious time by taking Mark to Te Kuiti hospital and we are forever grateful to him for that.”

It is believed the accident was bike related and Mark spent several weeks in the ICU at Waikato hospital in a coma and had received life saving surgery to relieve the pressure in his head caused by two major brain bleeds.

“We have been blessed by so many well wishers and have had a lot of support. Mark is home now and doing really well. I believe it is his farming fitness and attitude that has played a great part in his recovery.”

It was when they made the move to their own property that Paula decided to pursue her passion for writing, and since Mark’s accident she has concentrated on her second children’s story book called Pet Day. “I started to write my series Molly and Sam in 2015 and published Sheep Whistles and Sam in March 2016,” said Paula.

The stories are based on Paula’s own experiences of working on the farm and working the dogs.

“We have five dogs and every one of them have their own characters, and watching them work and do all the things they get up to is very inspirational — every day there is something to write about.

“Our six-year-old daughter Jasmine in the book is Molly. She and Sam are always together. Sheep Whistles and Sam was a hit. The books can be ordered on my Jabby-Jo Books Ltd Facebook page.”

Pet Day is a story about Sam going to school from a dog’s perspective and describes why Sam is nervous to be in a different situation away from the farm.

“I believe the New Zealand farming culture should be shouted about because it is a neat country. I love the thought of international visitors taking my books home to show others where we live.

For the farmers who are just applying N, P and K or worse than that, taking advice from a chemically programmed system, to just apply artificial nitrogen and synthetic soluble phosphate; the two products that are eroding farms precious soil and damaging the environment — what sort of stupid advice is that! How far away from real natural farming is the chemical industry taking the farmers,

and what is the point, when consumers globally are crying out for nutrient dense food! And so are the plants and the animals!

for plant health. All these minerals are critical. On a special note, 70% of nitrogen in the atmosphere is fixed by symbiotic microbes and bacteria that live on and in the plant roots. They get carbon from the plant in exchange for nitrogen. The other 30% of nitrogen is fixed by microbes living freely in the soil.

In a living soil, earthworm activity creates more air in the soil, which means more water retention. The worms’ castings are also an essential storage of nitrogen.

Brookside laboratories found that 10 worms in a spade spit of soil equates to 2.5 million worms per hectare, and that creates 6 tonnes of pure natural nitrogen per hectare per year with no damage to the environment! How good is that!

Miss Morrinsville is back again with the mini Miss Morrinsville being able to enter on the day. New to the show is the teddy bears’ picnic and painted rock competition.

“I have two questions for farmers,” said Mr Jolly. “Will the Healthy Rivers Plan Change One (PC1) affect you and have you made a submission yet?

“Submissions close on March 8.

After two and a half years following the collaborative stakeholder’s process, providing a recommendation to Waikato Regional Council, we are in a less-thandesirable situation. The change was voted through by a casting vote, which in itself suggests the notified plan change has fundamental flaws.

“While we are all in favour of what the vision and strategy sets out to achieve — which is cleaner water for swimming

and mahinga kai — maybe the bar has been set a little too high in places. For instance, is it realistic to have waterways which can be swam in 365 days a year, when this has never been possible in some of the region’s waterways?”

Mr Jolly says maintaining water quality and seeking its improvement is a community responsibility and should be shared across all sectors. For one sector to be hamstrung is not a fair and equitable approach.

“B+LNZ has proactively supported farmers in the Waikato region, consulting with stakeholders and developing a case which we believe is more likely to ensure the regional council achieves the vision and strategy. The most contentious issue is the approach to managing nitrogen emissions. The plan proposes restricting farmers to their 2014/15 or 2015/16 nitrogen losses. This ‘grand-parenting’ approach is a significant blow to those farming operations that are already low emitters, such as the drystock sector. It restricts flexibility in farming operations and the

ability to continue developing properties over time.

“It also fails to recognise existing on-farm investment to minimise environmental impacts, including planting trees and retiring farmland.”

He says farmers who have proactively put good measures in place, so they can farm to a low nitrogen leaching level and a low environmental footprint, find themselves penalised for doing the right thing. Meanwhile, high-emitting land users are effectively rewarded.

“As it stands, the plan change will have a detrimental effect on the way drystock farmers do business. We know there are better ways to meet the vision and strategy — and want a chance to put forward these approaches.

“Please take some time to make a submission, so you and future generations are still able to farm your land profitably in the future.”

Dairy nominations open Inspiring, dedicated community leaders are being sought for the 2017 Dairy Community Leadership Award. Nominations are open now and close on March 11.

The Dairy Community Leadership Award, run by the Dairy Women’s Network (DWN), recognises a dairying woman who is making a significant contribution in her local rural community through leadership and support.

“Women eligible for this award are often the unsung heroes in our dairy communities,” says DWN CEO Zelda de Villiers.

“They might be the women organising your local events, on various boards and committees, and are involved in all aspects of dairying life — from milking the cows through to offering advice and support to those around them.”

The award, sponsored by ASB and Tompkins Wake, includes a scholarship prize to attend a leadership programme in New Zealand.

The title will be awarded at the national DWN conference in Queenstown in May. The selection panel includes the CEO of DWN, ASB and Tompkins Wake representatives, and a DWN regional convenor.

The judging panel will judge nominations based on who has demonstrated leadership in her community, played an active role in community organisations and events, and is an active member of DWN and a good representative for the organisation.

Last year’s winner, Lisa Hicks, was recognised for her commitment to sharing dairying knowledge and fostering a love of the industry among the younger generation. An advocate for ongoing education, Ms Hicks regularly

hosts local and international students on her farm to show what dairy farming is like, and she also partners with other industry training organisations to host farming students. She helped establish the Ohakune DairyNZ on-farm discussion group and is a DWN regional convenor in the Manawatu region.

Upon winning last year she said for her, the award meant access to further learning.

“I do more managerial roles on the farm now, and my son is 2IC so he’s taken over a lot of my former roles,” she says. “The award means looking closely at yourself, your learning and leadership style, and putting yourself out there to do more and meet new people.”

Steps to joint health

Part two: I was recently contacted by someone with osteoarthritis in her hands, feet and hips. After detailed analysis we made some changes to her diet and supplement programme.

She was taking a supplement which combined fish oil and various antioxidants. While this product had many beneficial ingredients, the amount of active omega-3 was lower than I recommend.

We added my stabilised fish oil at 6,000mg daily and higher doses of my chondroitin/glucosamine/ curcumin supplement. The results have been excellent. Her joints have much improved and she is especially thrilled with her feet, as these were starting to cause real problems.

The key to improved joint health is being prepared to experiment and use a process of elimination. In this case she was taking omega-3 — we just changed the doses. She was taking a joint supplement — what we did was to use different doses and combinations.

There are many diet changes that can help arthritis. By far the most important are fats. Some fats are inflammatory and worsen arthritis.

Some are anti-inflammatory and reduce the inflammatory part of arthritis. Others are relatively neutral.

Animal fats are high in arachidonic acid which increases inflammatory eicosanoids and tend to push the body to an inflammatory state. This is especially true for grain-fed meat and dairy. Fortunately our predominantly grass-fed meat and dairy has a more neutral impact on inflammation. As a rule I would use lean meat cuts and moderate dairy fats.

Next time we look at omega-3 and 6 and see the importance of maintaining a low ratio of omega-6 to 3. If you have arthritis you should work to a personalised programme for best results.

The Magnum ute is $72,090 for a manual, plus on-road costs — automatic available for an additional $2,200 — like the Motorsport Edition and Director Edition, is intended to be the most driver focussed version of the Commodore ute ever.

It offers lightweight brakes, larger alloys and the performance seats and exterior highlights with the inclusion of a lockable hard tonneau cover.

Utes are big business and right now the Ford Ranger rules the roost, with even the mighty Toyota Hilux relegated to second place. We’ve even got an ‘undercard’ of lower-priced utes out of Asia and India battling for supremacy, but there’s been a notable gap in the top tier lately that has had certain badgeloyalists fuming.

Back in the day, the Holden 1-tonne ute was king. Before the idea of a utility truck was redefined by the modern demand for car-like handling and leather interiors, the benchseated, chrome-grilled HQ was the working man’s first choice. Up against the Valiant and Falcon, the big Holden literally helped build most of our towns and cities. Now Holden are back, with a ute of a different mould. Under the hood a big 2.8L Duramax diesel pumps out 147 kilowatts and a maximum 500 newton-metres of torque — the key to the immense towing capacity of the Colorado, rated at 3.5 tonnes. Add in that classic one tonne of deck load and you have a machine which can handle the caravan, the boat or anything for the farm.

Aftersocks — buy, wear and share

As a nationwide farming effort, the Rural Women New Zealand Aftersocks NZ campaign is up and running for the second time, building a community of fans and followers all wearing their support for the recent quake affected areas of New Zealand.

To date over 21,000 pairs of socks have been sold to supporters worldwide since the initial launch in 2010 following the Christchurch earthquake.

RWNZ are encouraging people to buy, wear and share their support on social media by tagging @aftersocksnz to inspire others to purchase a pair of New Zealand made merino socks.

Proceeds from Aftersocks sales go to the RWNZ Adverse Events Relief Fund.

Several grants have been distributed to individuals and groups in the areas surrounding Kaikoura, with the aim of raising community spirit.

The small town of Ward, 20km north of Seddon the epicentre of the magnitude 7.8 quake, hosted a cricket match in January with assistance from the fund. The sporting event and barbecue attracted 60 people including children, who were treated to a special visit from Mr Whippy.

RWNZ members from Nor th Canterbury and the wider Marlborough region have also been visiting rural farmers and residents isolated by the quakes to distribute care packages.

Rachel Bartrum’s Kaikoura home and business, Lynton Downs Farm Homestay, was damaged by the quakes.

The old house did a great job at staying up to let the Bartum family out safely, something Rachel says “we will be forever thankful for.”

The quake exposed some relics with the falling chimney revealing several historic photos of the first Lynton Downs family.

Rachel received a visit from a RWNZ member post-quake with a care package.

“Thank you so much, this will help us on our new journey of rebuilding on the farm.”

The Adverse Events Relief Fund is available to individuals, communities and groups, with emphasis on rural women and children. Apply now through the RWNZ website ruralwomen.org.nz.
