Fonterra partners with Dutch cheesemaker Fonterra Cooperative Group has commissioned its first wholly-owned and operated dairy ingredients plant in Europe.

Under a partnership signed two years ago, Fonterra will operate the dairy ingredients plant in Heerenveen, in the north of the Netherlands, and Dutch cheese manufacturer A-ware Food Group will operate an adjacent cheese plant.

Whey and lactose, byproducts of the cheese production on the Dutch site, will be processed into highvalue paediatric, maternal, and sports nutrition products to supply Fonterra customers in Europe and Asia.

CEO Theo Spierings said the new plant is part of the co-operative’s fully integrated global supply chain, from the farm gate direct to global consumers.

“Fonterra has substantial intellectual property in the manufacture of functional whey protein ingredients and had been looking for some time for a source of high quality whey to enable us to commercialise these innovations.

“Our partnership with A-ware Food Group fits well with our strategic priorities aimed at increasing the volume and value of our ingredients and branded products.”

The plant will operate around the clock, producing 5,000 metric tonnes of whey protein and 25,000 metric tonnes of lactose annually. Fonterra imports lactose from the US and Europe.

In 2013, Fonterra Europe launched a range of whey protein ingredients under the brand name europro. Whey protein concentrates are used in a variety of applications, such as enhanced protein yoghurts, beverages and nutritional supplements.

Taking safety to the fore

An education campaign on farm safety is getting underway in Waikato, and the rest of the country, in a new programme, funded 50/50 by WorkSafe and ACC. leadership with WorkSafe being a clear and consistent regulator.

“In order to achieve this, Safer Farms is adopting a range of activities to engage with farmers and provide them with support and information about the safety of their farms. The activities include: • A website to support farmers with establishing their health and safety systems and highlighting the hazards faced in farming • A printed tool kit similar to the information provided on the website, to enable greater sharing of information • Greater availability of WorkSafe staff to support agriculture sector groups in educating farmers about health and safety • An education programme for children, which will be run in rural primary schools (pilot commencing in April 2015) and an education campaign to rural supplies retailers about safety issues on farms.

Federated Farmers Waikato provincial president, Chris Lewis, notes that in the last two years, there have been up to 40 deaths and many injuries on-farm.

“Most farmers would agree this has been too many. While there is no pattern, there are too many accidents occurring and we must do more to reduce these on-farm. This starts with you the farmer, the person in charge of the work place, the owner of the business, the management taking ownership and responsibility,” he said.

In the first five weeks of opening, Over the Moon dairy company won three cheesemakers medals and they have won 75 medals and 13 trophies in total since.

M

anaging director, Sue Arthur had always said she would like to have her own company before retirement. She went to Australia to learn the art of making cheese at home and she thought — I can do this — and went on to build a dairy factory in Putaruru and called it ‘Over the Moon’.

She met master cheesemaker Neil Willman as a tutor on that course and he became her advisor and business partner. He personally designs the recipes and is highly respected around the world in the cheesemaking industry, often referred to as ‘Mr Cheese’.

“In the past, cheese manufacturing was a straightforward process.

Nowadays, you have to be an expert at everything, from quality control to research, packaging and marketing.

There are many different processes you have to go through. It certainly is not easy to start a company,” says Sue. The handcrafted delicacy is made in the boutique factory, with high quality local milk, producing approximately 12,000 premium pieces per year.

They also manufacture for other small companies. Every creation is handmade and quality is controlled with daily personal care by their team.

Cake anyone? — A fine display of the Over the Moon cheese Cheese please, waiting for the final touches who wanted someone to help a young Frenchman learn the craft.

“Neil decided he would teach the student and when that first student returned to France, word got out on how good his experience was and more French students wanted to come to New Zealand and do an internship to learn the skill of making French cheese.”

They also do workshops catering for the general public.

In March they will be releasing a limited batch of Neil’s new creation called ‘Southern Cross by Neil Willman’.

“This particular delicacy takes a lot of organisation and there is a very technical process involving blending four milks. He makes the whole batch in one day and it takes a year to mature.

Made up from goat, cow, sheep and buffalo milk, it is beautifully crafted and is in a class of its own,” says Sue. From small beginnings and a dream to own her own business, Sue Arthur has managed to influence the world of cheese, not only in New Zealand but across the globe.

Neil will be judging a few categories in the upcoming New Zealand cheese festival — CheeseFest-at the Langham Hotel in Auckland on Wednesday, 18 March from 4–8pm and Over the Moon will be available for sampling.

Mike and Marion Alspach’s impromptu decision to cultivate lavender won them a silver medal for their Angustifolia Pacific blue oil in 2011.

R

edundancy from long-term employment meant they were both looking for new jobs and neither knew what they wanted to do with their futures.

Harvesting echinacea was their original mission but every time they researched the topic, they came home talking about lavender. They purchased a block of land and planted 500 plants without much thought.

“Luckily for us they grew,” says Mike. “If you are looking for a business example, don’t look at us. We did everything wrong and just didn’t realise we could have gone broke.

“We thought in ignorance that you just grew the plants and then rang someone to come and harvest them. It didn’t take long to discover this was certainly not the way it worked at all.

“We had no idea how to process the lavender oil or how to market the products that would be made.

“Discovering steam distillation was used for processing the oil, meant building our own distillery unit because you can’t hire them and they were too expensive to buy.

“It was made from a double coil ‘ss’ pipe out of an old refrigeration unit, inside a steel pipe with an old hubcap

over the top and an lpg burner attached.”

It worked and they managed to extract a little oil out of the lavender on their first attempt. The business was under way.

Most recognised as an essential oil, lavender is possibly one of the most useful of all oils. It has been said it was used during WW1 in hospitals as an antiseptic. It is calming, stops insect bites, and can help heal small wounds and burns Marion researched and created her own recipes. Starting with massage and bath oils, she progressed to hand creams and other products. “Naive at marketing too, we became very despondent when at our first stall at the Frankton markets. People would just

The association works with growers to achieve a defined standard for New Zealand lavender oil. Mike is now the Northern regional co-ordinator for the association.

“To be really successful in the lavender industry, we realised you need to have a cafe on site and a garden setting but we didn’t want to go that way.

“We moved to Pirongia and downsized to 2,000 plants and now focus on the Hamilton area and the Frankton markets as well as our website.

“Lavender is quite a little miracle herb and growing it has been interesting for us. We certainly enjoy working with this special plant.”

“When not one customer had approached us, out of pure desperation I took the lid off a jar of hand cream and approached a lady to try some,” says Mike.

“She loved it and because that one lady brought a jar, we kept at it. That first customer has no idea that buying that one jar saved us from going home and burning the whole crop.”

The flowers come in many varieties of colour with different strengths and smells. Each variety can have different uses.

Lavender is harvested once a year and is ready when it’s buzzing with bees. Mike says it’s not at all scary, as the bees are all very calm and relaxed.

A century since Gallipoli is a time of remembrance for tens of thousands of New Zealanders and memories abounded on a recent trip to France.

BACK TO THE

battlefields

A

visit to those battlefields of long ago is relatively easy today, compared to the huge journey of early last century.

It was a case of booking aboard Singapore Airlines from Auckland, in the winter months when sunny skies in Europe were a better prospect than winter chills at home.

The giant A380 would have flabbergasted my own grandfather, who fortunately returned from the fighting in France, and we dined well, were entertained with myriad channels, and sped on after a brief transit in Singapore to collect a rental car from Renault Euro Drive at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris.

The soft tones of ‘Charlotte’ as we christened the husky voice of our on-board GPS device, made finding our way to northern France a breeze.

That afternoon we were in Le Quesnoy, liberated from occupying German troops

by New Zealanders on November 4, 1918. And it was raining!

The town is a mediaeval walled city, albeit with modern road openings. We found a parking space in the central cobbled square,and set about exploring.

The first sign of Kiwi provenance came with the street named ‘Rue de Helen Clarke,’ commemorating a visit by the former PM. Back in the first great war the 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade surrounded the town, to keep the German occupiers contained. What followed was one of the Kiwi troops most spectacular exploits of the war.

They scaled the ramparts at night and took on the Germans. Surprise was complete and the defenders quickly surrendered. The townspeople were overjoyed and Le Quesnoy has forged

Le Quesnoy. Central parking is easy in the cobbled town square strong links New Zealand. The town has one of four New Zealand battlefield memorials on the Western Front. The others are at Graventafel and Mesen/ Messines in Belgium, and Longueval in France.

On our visit, we made our way to the information centre on the town’s eastern side. As luck would have it, it was closed for a holiday so we fell back on advice from some friendly locals.

(A note here for travellers following in our footsteps to check the French holiday calendar.)

In the nearby Jardin du Souvenir, or Garden of Remembrance, reached easily through a (rather dilapidated) short tunnel in the ramparts is the New Zealand battlefield memorial. Set into

the rampart, above a now empty moat, is a relief carving showing soldiers scaling the walls.

On our visit, it was enlightening to see a class of French schoolchildren listening to their teacher’s hands-on history lesson.

On their tour of France in 2000, the All Blacks visited Le Quesnoy and they led a parade to the memorial where wreaths were laid.

On a more sombre note, to the north of the town is Le Quesnoy Cemetery. Most of the 50 New Zealanders buried here lost their lives on November 4, 1918, just one week before the armistice.

Perhaps though, the most abiding memory of Le Quesnoy was the friendly handshake in a local cafe from a passing

townsman, who simply said, “Nouvelle Zealadais? Tres bon, tres bon,” before continuing on his way.

Helping complete the circle

Combined experience and putting their clients first is proving to be a winning formula for a new rural consultancy business.

Established by Rob Macnab and Aaron Baker, Total Ag is committed to helping farmers ‘complete the circle’ by delivering high quality, timely and effective farm consulting services.

Together, Rob and Aaron have covered the spectrum of pastoral farming and have an understanding of farm operations from the ground up. With over 28 years combined experience in soil fertility, fertiliser advisory roles and rural banking, the creation of Total Ag seemed like a natural progression.

“For me, being involved in Total Ag has been about helping assist farmers at a grass roots level and seeing positive outcomes for the families we become involved with,” says Rob, who grew up in the Wanganui hill country. During his professional career, Rob has worked alongside farming families, helping them get the most out of their business, which he says is highly rewarding and enjoyable.

Rob’s CV chronicles his time as a farm worker and also with BOP Fertiliser, latterly Ballance, and Rabobank. He has completed a Kelloggs Scholarship and a Masters degree in Agribusiness at Lincoln.

Aaron Baker grew up in Northland and says his decision to join forces with Rob

was built on a shared desire to be able to offer unbiased, wide ranging and wellfounded advice to progressive clients.

“I enjoy looking at the whole farm system with our clients, coupling the aspects of rural finance, soil fertility and animal nutrition to what they want to achieve personally and from a business perspective and getting that balance.”

Aaron’s grassroots experience is borne out of working on sheep and beef operations both here and in the United Kingdom. He also has an Applied Science degree from Massey University, with a double major in Agriculture and Forestry. The pair met after Aaron joined Ballance Agri-nutrients. He later moved on to Rabobank and worked with farmers from across the agricultural spectrum in Northland, Waikato and Marlborough.

For Rob and Aaron, completing the circle means linking sound soil, pasture and stock management to successful financial management to help develop better outcomes and long-term sustainability.

Choosing the right pumps and filters

Have you ever been confused when buying pumps and filter systems by all the jargon, too afraid to ask, or have no idea what you just parted with a lot of money for?

It isn’t just a case of one size fits all. Like any mechanical or technical product there are a few terms and calculations needed. But understanding what you are buying shouldn’t require you to have a degree in engineering!

Keeping it simple — what pressure do you need at the tap so you don’t need to run around in the shower to get wet?

Generally pressure is expressed in metres head. Distances from source to tank, to pump, and to tap outlet are needed to calculate this. Another term, friction loss is the pressure lost as the water travels through the pipe, so you need to know elevation and pipe size. Flow, measured in litres per minute, is how many taps are likely to operate at once.

Some simple calculations give you duty performance. Pumps have maximum and duty performances.

On a pump curve chart, duty performance is mid curve and this is where you want your pump

performing.

Often maximum performance is quoted exaggerating the pump’s ability so the pump is over-sold and under-delivers. A pump will not operate at the maximum for long without damage.

There are many inexpensive water filters and you should buy NSF grade filters and housings which are internationally tested for use with drinking water. Non NSF filters may leach chemicals into your water, do little actual filtration, and can disintegrate as water passes through and you are ingesting freshly introduced contaminants!

Filter housings should also be BPA Free ensuring the plastic is high quality, will withstand years of use, and not leach nasty chemicals into your water.

In most cases, you should be able to maintain and clean your filter system yourself and change consumables as easily as doing the dishes! No need to use chemicals or enter costly service contracts. www.pumpandpurify.co.nz

Start with a solid foundation Building is essentially a task that begins from the ground up, and the very foundations of a house or home are vital. But foundations also need to be revisited, as in the case of some rural buildings in Waikato, that may have started life in pioneer days.

Over time piles can rot away, causing them to fail.

If the house was built in an era that used totara piles, an examination will soon determine if repiling has happened. New piles are either concrete or tanalised (H5) pine and are easy to spot. Make sure to check out that all the piles have been replaced. It is quite common that only a few piles are new, often just around the edge of the house.

Sometimes all the piles move, but more often different piles move to different extents. This causes the house to twist, bow and crack, resulting in damage. The piles may have stopped moving, or may be continuing to move — this all depends on the cause.

If you are planning renovations, it pays to start with firm foundations or you are going to end up with an inferior result.

This involves digging new piles down to a firm base and attempting to re-align the house on this new foundation.

Maintaining a healthy flow

As dry weather puts the squeeze on rural water supplies, nasties can come out of hiding to strike at the unwary. These water-dwelling bugs can cause queasy feelings at best, but require medical intervention at worst.

For those whose daily shower or cup of tea rely on the contents of a water tank, it’s a stressful time in late summer. Not only are levels dropping to the point where it’s necessary to call in the local water truck — there are also possible issues lurking in the bottom of the tank, in the form of unhealthy sediments and microorganisms.

These microscopic bugs are actually fighting the good fight against organic matter (decomposed leaf litter from gutters, for example), but as they chew through their meal they create an oxygen-poor layer of water. Snorkel-type devices which take water from the top of the tank are often deployed to avoid this layer entirely.

Other sources of contamination include lead flashings on older roofs, animal excrement from birds and possums, airborne chemicals from

road vehicles or from agricultural chemical application, or even hairline fractures and cracks in the tank itself.

While most local authorities and health professionals recommend testing your water tank on a yearly basis, this time of the year, when the water is at its lowest ebb, may be a good time to siphon off sediments, by the simple engagement of a funnel attached to a garden hose.

In fact, the time before the rains of winter is a good opportunity to check over the entire system which takes water from a stream, a bore, or the roof, and to fill in any gaps where harmful contaminants may enter. A robust modern systems includes screened gutters, a first flush diversion system, clean plastic piping, and the option of filtration with UV decontamination on the way to your kitchen or bathroom.

Herd of bikes for foster kids

Ten deserving young New Zealanders were surprised and excited to be given new bikes at CRV Ambreed’s sales conference last week.

The herd improvement company donated the bikes through the Fostering Kids charity, as part of a team building event called ‘Build My Ride’.

Managing director of CRV Ambreed Angus Haslett said 10 teams completed a series of fun challenges designed to get people working together.

“Once the teams had earned a set of bike parts, they each constructed a bicycle and learnt the activity had a ‘higher purpose’.”

Teams were able to present their bicycle to a Fostering Kids foster child in-person, which was an “incredibly rewarding experience” for everyone involved.

“When the kids ran in and showed us how excited and happy they were to be

getting their first bike, it was a pretty special moment for everyone,” said Angus. “We all had some great fun and it was very moving to see these bikes going to some deserving and very happy children.”

Fostering Kids is a charitable organisation providing foster families with encouragement, support and education. Because of their past experiences, children in foster care can have challenging behaviours, and being a foster parent can be tough.

“Donating a new bike to a child in foster care is just one way to make a real difference to a foster family.”

Setting dairying women on the right path

Taking part in the Agri-Women’s Development Trust’s new pilot programme has left one Waikato woman feeling empowered and confident in the day-to-day running of her business.

Arohena dairy farmer Cathy Prendergast was among the first intake of participants in the Pathways Programme.

The first of two modules was held in November last year.

Having already completed AWDT’s F irst Steps Programme, Cathy said she found extra benefit from Pathways.

“First Steps was the perfect precursor to Pathways, because it made you look at where you were at in life and how you got there. Pathways, on the other hand, challenges you to look outside yourself and objectively think about how others might see you.

“I found the programme enlightening and it also affirmed the value of the role Arohena dairy farmer that I play in our business.

Re-imagined, reinforced and ready to work

When it comes time to choose a new ATV quad for the farm — and especially one to be put through a gruelling rote of farming chores by farm staff daily — it’s not the bells and whistles which count.

It’s toughness, reliability, and to a large extent price which dictate a shrewd investment. Which is not to say that rider comfort, safety, storage options and power don’t come into the mix — it’s just that dollar for dollar, most Kiwi farmers are looking for a working tool, not a recreational toy.

All of which should be no surprise — Can Am, like their rivals in both the United States and Asia, have to innovate and improve to survive the cut and thrust of the ATV world. What is different though, is the price.

Top honours for automotive excellence

This year’s AA and New Zealand Motoring Writers’ Guild car of the year awards have provided some surprises and some clear victors, as members voted for their pick of 2014’s top auto across a variety of categories.

While it was the Mazda3 which took top honours this year, there has been cause for comment across some of those other classes too, with especial mention made of the Ford Ranger’s win in the best ute category, and the double win for Mercedes Benz, with their C Class taking out both best medium to large car and safest car.

The Mazda3 impressed the judges with a combination of style, technology and function, joining the marque’s CX-5

in the winner’s circle as the ‘crossover’ took best small to medium SUV. AA Motoring Services General Manager Stella Stocks says the Mazda3 has become a Kiwi favourite with a wide range of models to suit a broad range of motorists.

“The Mazda3 is a very deserving winner and its place at the head of the top 10 finalists is likely providing little surprise to many,” Ms Stocks says. “With the Mazda3 we have an outstanding allrounder with a wide model range and some great safety technology.”

Ford’s Ranger ute has enjoyed a stellar run on the podium, with big awards in every year of its model life, including being named New Zealand Autocar Car of the Year in 2011. This year sees the Ranger once again take out best ute, a title it has held since 2012, issuing a clear challenge to other global car makers. This popularity has been borne out in numbers of Rangers on the road.

Such is the prestige attached to winning Car of the Year that Mazda may very well expect similar performance from the Mazda3.

Mercedes-Benz have elevated their C Class to new heights with the latest

model, putting it deservedly in top spot for both safety and for the important medium to large car bracket.

The German automakers also took out the wreath for best luxury car for their latest iteration of the S Class — a badge which has meant well-engineered quality for decades. The large SUV award went to Hyundai’s Santa Fe, while

the best small car was awarded to the nimble little Honda Jazz. BMW’s M3 and M4 were jointly named sports car of the year, continuing the dominance of the formidable M series. BMW also took out best luxury SUV with their X5, rounding out a list of superbly engineered steel for the Kiwi public to peruse, debate — and drive — as we head into 2015.

Fighting corrosion the local way

A local company is importing military and aviation certified products that will change the way people deal with corrosion.

The Whangarei based company, Corrosion Control NZ, owned by four Kiwi shareholders with Tom Muller as Commercial Director, aims to save customers’ money whilst being environmentally friendly.

“We want to contribute something to the local community,” Thomas says of his motivation to start the business.

The ramifications of settlement The ANZ Bank has reached a settlement over the interest rate swaps issue with the Commerce Commission and the Financial Markets Authority and it is the view of Farmers of New Zealand that affected farmers may need specialist legal advice before accepting the ANZ Bank offer.

Farmers of New Zealand and our legal advisor, John Waugh of Daniel Overton and Goulding have followed with interest the recent agreements reached where that bank has agreed to compensate its farming customers in respect of alleged misleading conduct in the sale by them of interest rate swaps.

We understand that negotiations with another bank continues.

Though often each farmer has his own story, the central theme is that the interest rate swaps were marketed and promoted by ANZ’s Financial Markets and Rural teams as ‘fixed rate’ loans.

This was in a period of some uncertainty as to where interest rates were actually heading and as floating

rates fell to an all time low, farmers found they were locked into loans where the bank actually increased, or had the ability to increase, the ‘fixed rates’.

Farmers of New Zealand believes there is no doubt these farmers suffered losses. The essence of the agreement between the Commerce Commission and the ANZ is that the Commerce Commission has concluded that the banks’ ‘conduct was, or was likely to be misleading’.

ANZ for its part, whilst agreeing to make a payment of some $18 million, has for a variety of reasons disagreed with the findings against it and they have denied they were in fact culpable of misleading conduct. Their reasons

included for example that the Commerce Commission’s conclusions — ‘have not been tested in Court’ and ‘it would not be liable for any fines, penalties, refunds or damages at law, whether under any Act or any other legislation, regulation or rule of law’.

FNZ suggests these are brave words by the ANZ. If that was truly the banks’ position we are of the view that the ANZ should have welcomed the opportunity to have received public exoneration in a defended hearing in court.

Before this announcement was made by the Commerce Commission, Daniel Overton and Goulding had already considered this matter for farming groups involved with ANZ and had issued an opinion to the effect that there was probable cause of action.

We are also not convinced, based upon our investigations, that all relevant matters have been fully spelt out in the Settlement Agreement with ANZ. A back of the envelope calculation indicates a payout on average of $100,000 for the 179 farming groups involved on the basis of this being a full and final settlement.

Farmers will not know their actual position until they receive a letter from Northington and Partners some time before the end of April 2015. This letter will set out each party’s ‘entitlement’.

They will then have 70 working days, being 3½ months, to decide to accept

Apparently it is not leaking if it can meet a magical figure of 1 x 10-9 but what does this mean? How do you measure it? Many farmers are having to think seriously about their dairy effluent management system, particularly the condition of their storage ponds as more and more pressure is being applied to comply with Regional Council Rules.

In simplest terms the leaching rate of 1 x 10-9 is a velocity in metres per second. A really good clay such as the marine clay found in parts of the Hauraki Plains and Hamilton brown clay can be good enough to achieve this. To put the number into perspective for effluent pond leachate to pass through a clay of this quality it will travel 315 mm in 10 years.

That’s not a lot.

For environmental and compliance reasons it is important that ponds do not leak, but it is also important that farmers have access to affordable leakage testing technology that can indicate reliably and with scientific precision

whether and by how much a pond is leaking. Effluent ponds are expensive items to install or repair so it is important that any decision made to replace a pond because of leakage is based on an accurate assessment of leakage and not guess work. Various pond leakage tests have been considered, including clay core testing, drainage monitoring, even measuring the pond level with a ruler, but many of these methods are expensive, most are not comprehensive (i.e. they may not detect a leak when one exists), and most do not meet the level of precision required to meet regional rules.

Check with your local regional council contacts to determine what tests they are prepared to accept as a measure of compliance.

Effluent is a huge part of the dairy farming equation — an inevitable by-product of this lucrative industry.

It’s an area which has seen rapid change in recent years, with new regulations seeking to safeguard the environment, while still allowing farms to handle a substance which is seen by some as a burden, and by some as a resource to be harnessed.

For the last five years the Waikato Regional Council has held an annual effluent expo, showcasing the latest technology in the field of effluent management. It’s a vital link in the chain, keeping farmers engaged with council, who must, as part of their remit, manage regional legislation and controls around effluent holding and dispersal.

With everyone in the effluent equation working toward a common goal, a potentially messy problem becomes a manageable resource.

Last year, close to 700 farmers came to take part in the expo, which featured over 50 exhibitors. For 2015, the numbers are expected to be even higher, and the organisers of the expo will be proud to display the cutting edge of innovation to farmers in the nation’s

dairy heartland. “It’s great that the expo is really being seen throughout the industry as a one-stop shop to support farmers in upgrading their effluent systems,” says expo organiser and environmental farming systems adviser Electra Kalaugher.

“We were especially happy to note that about half the expo’s visitors were farm owners, who are the decision makers for major investments like upgrading their effluent systems.”

This year’s effluent expo will be held on the site of New Zealand’s national Fieldays, the Mystery Creek Events Centre, on the 17th of March.

Expect to see a wide range of choices to make effluent management on the farm more affordable, equitable, and environmentally sound.

The compact yet highly efficient Clean Green Effluent system, is now recognised world wide. This dairy effluent system automatically disperses effluent with virtually no environmental impact through it’s super low application rate.

The system starts by filtering out the solids through the Clean Green Effluent Co patented weeping wall. The solids are retained in a concrete bunker and the liquid portion weeps through to a pump chamber. This green liquid is then pumped to a storage tank which is used for external yard wash then recycled across the yard and back to the weeping wall. The yards are washed clean without having to hose off with fresh water. This reduces total freshwater consumption to about 20lt/cow/day instead of the normal 50 to 70lt/cow/ day.

This reduces the amount of effluent to be dispersed to land to 20lt/cow per day.

As the super low application depth allows us to apply farm dairy effluent virtually all year round the storage requirement is minimal.

The removal of open ponds reduces the rainwater footprint and reduces the overall farm dairy effluent having to be applied to land. Rainwater catchment with conventional ponds can contribute

to millions of litres per year of liquid to be dispersed. Rainwater contribution can equate to more liquid than is produced in the dairy shed.

The patented distribution system is fully automated and only requires about

three hours work per month to maintain this problem free effluent system.

To meet the allowable leaching levels the focus will need to shift from overall milk production from ever expanding herds, to fewer cows/herds, and maximising individual cow production.

Even in our own days of dairy farming this seemed a logical idea, but met with no support at discussion groups or from peers. Getting more cows was the focus, even though supplements at that time consisted of no more than hay or grass silage.

Every kilogramme of pasture grown must be eaten, and if not eaten by one, then by another. In many cases this resulted in pasture being grazed too hard, and taking longer to recover.

With the advent of maize silage and other easily procurable supplements, these became the wherewithal to get supposed maximum production from more cows. The income from this ‘extra’ production was assumed to be

sufficient to pay for the supplements.

‘Production’ was the word of the day, and ‘profitability’ relied on ever increasing payouts. The most financially successful farmers this season are those growing the most pasture and grazing it at the optimum time for high levels of per animal production.

The future success of New Zealand’s pastoral farming lies in our ability to fully feed highly efficient animals on finest quality low-cost pasture. The grass fed food produced is best quality, and with sound marketing and selling a premium price will be paid for it.

Until this extremely low payout season, when the topic of farming with fewer animals has been raised, the immediate and understandable objection is that less individual and overall production is not an option. But a number of farmers have already found that reducing animal numbers actually

results in increased output, as less feed is required for animal maintenance, with more going directly into meat and milk production.

Through existing breeding and selection programmes the animals capable of exceptional production from pasture alone are already available.

However, the first step to maximising that potential is ensuring a plentiful supply of high quality pasture, and that starts with the soil.

Highest pasture production comes from the best soil. There are three aspects to soil fertility — nutrient levels, physical structures, and biological activity. All are equally important.

Intensive grazing can be hard on all these soil aspects. While much is written about keeping nutrient levels up, and avoiding pugging, the need for continuous robust biological activity is often overlooked. Thus a nutrient programme which not only supplies phosphorus, potassium and sulphur, but also contains biological inputs, can allow the soil itself to create exceptional pasture growth without reliance on fertiliser nitrogen.

Meat industry in ‘serious decline’

“We’re talking about New Zealand’s second biggest export industry, and it’s in serious decline.”

This statement from Meat Industry Excellence chairman John McCarthy underlined his call for improved corporate governance at the country’s meat co-operatives.

He has cited the case where the Silver Fern Farms chairman, one of the farmer-elected directors up for reelection, effectively endorsed another of the three candidates by calling for no change on the board.

“This is entirely inappropriate for a co-operative chairman, especially one up for re-election himself who is one of three candidates in the electoral process,” said Mr McCarthy.

“We saw it during the Alliance elections, and this is further evidence of the need to improve governance standards at our co-ops,” he said.

“It’s the principle at stake. It is up to farmers to decide whom they elect as governors of their co-op.”

Mr McCarthy said that farmers were further frustrated at the poor levels of transparency and accountability exhibited by their co-ops. Many meat farmers felt cheated by what could now be interpreted as a lack of honesty at last year’s co-op company farmer meetings.

“The promises are turning to dust, like our pastures. The $100-plus per lamb of last year was an aberration and

we’re back to worse than a year ago.

The situation is much worse when one takes into account our currency slide against the US$. ”He said farmers felt cheated by the pictures painted by Alliance and Silver Fern Farms when they held their meetings with farmers late last year.

“Schedules are falling again, and the co-ops are leading the way. They are stretching farmer loyalty to the limit.

“Compounding this is that during the last few years the poor practices of the SFF board have eroded shareholder value and they are effectively selling the family silver to stay afloat, meanwhile heralding this performance as good governance and asking farmers to support more of the same.

“Farmers are telling me they feel that they weren’t told the truth when the co-op companies should have known what was coming down the track. While they were busy telling us how things were looking up, it appears they were planning new year price cuts, and downward revisions of schedules,” said Mr McCarthy. “On top of climatic challenges, this is putting farmers under real stress.”

He added that farmers deserved better in terms of co-operative governance, and needed to exercise their votes carefully.

“The status quo is not delivering.

Shareholders ought not to be being directed by a co-op chairman who is himself in the electoral race.

And they ought to be able to expect greater transparency and accountability

around results and business outlook.
