Town will meet country in March when several farms across the nation open the front gates to allow the general public to experience a day out on the farm.

The Federated Farmers Farm Day initiative aims to build a better understanding of rural New Zealand and make connections between farmers and urban dwellers.

Now into its fifth year, Farm Day also provides an ideal opportunity to bridge the rural-urban divide and demonstrate to the public what farmers do each day, every day of the year. Two farms in the wider region will open their gates this year.

Milking demonstrations, interactive sheep handling and other farm activities at Andrew McCloud’s Bay of Plenty dairy unit, will aim to show visitors what is involved in current farming practices.

This Farm Day, to be held on March 24, will run from approximately 10am–3pm at 1185 Welcome Bay Road, Papamoa.

Federated Farmers Rotorua-Taupo provincial president Neil Heather is also hosting a Farm Day on his family’s Heather Dell Angus Stud near Rotorua.

The Heather family run 120 Angus stud breeding cows and 1,200 breeding ewes on their 325ha hill country property.

Shearing and spinning demonstrations will be incorporated into the wool theme chosen for this Farm Day. “We will try to promote wool as much as possible,” said Mr Heather.

An active farm walk and interaction with farm activities will also be included.

Visitors will receive an interactive questionnaire sheet on their arrival at this Farm Day which includes questions from various places they can visit on the property. A lucky dip prize is given out to the children on the completion of the questionnaire and conclusion of the visit.

“We had 750 visitors last year and it seems to increase every year,” said Mr Heather.

Donations received during this year’s Farm Day hosted at Heather Dell Angus Stud will go towards St John. Last year’s Farm Day raised $1,000 towards the rescue helicopter service.

This Farm Day, to be held on March 17, will run from 10am–3pm at 945 Paradise Valley Road.

Federated Farmers Farm Days provide both an ideal open learning opportunity for the general public as well as a fun day out.

Farmers urged to minimise water use

Although field monitoring confirmed some rainfall in the Waikato recently, it hasn’t eased concerns about further potential water take restrictions from waterways in the near future.

Streams in north Waikato, as well as the Piako River, have been either close or below minimum flows where water take restrictions are made. These restrictions are placed to protect aquatic life and ensure there is enough water for essential uses. The Waihou River has also been nearing its minimum flow.

Rainfall has slightly improved the situation for the Waihou and Piako Rivers, and the north Waikato streams, but there are signs that the Waipa River and other waterways are also under strain.

Dr Brown urged all those with water take consents to keep up-to-date with river flows and not to use more water than they are allowed during periods of low flow. This includes irrigator use, municipal and industrial users.

Farmers and other users taking water without a consent under permitted activity rules should also minimise water use where possible and ensure there are no leaks in their systems.

“‘Jat’ means farmer,” a spokesperson from the Hamilton Sikh Society tells me, referring to the caste to which many early Sikh migrants to New Zealand belonged. “Our people who came here were farmers in Punjab, and they were very good at it.”

Among them is the farm of Mastan and Harpal Singh, who with their son Manvinder and his wife Kulwinder milk 400 cows on 500 acres just out of Morrinsville. Mastan’s grandfather, Mehan Singh, first came to the Waikato from a village near Nawanshahr, in the Punjab area of Northern India, in 1913.

“Granddad came out with a cousin of his,” Mastan says. “They came from farming backgrounds — young men looking for an adventure — a new start.”

Back in Punjab the young men’s families grew sugarcane, maize and wheat, and they were also no strangers to milking cows.

“But they were buffalo cows. And nothing like the numbers we milk now.

“When they first came the whole of Waikato was one big dome of peat and swamp, and they worked digging drains and cutting flax for the flax mills around Ngatea.”

farm established, Balwant had returned to India to look after his mother and find a wife, and in 1948 he brought his wife Mohinder and young family back to New Zealand.

“I was four years old,” says Mastan, “so I don’t really have any memories of India. Granddad went back to India and Grandma for good shortly after we arrived, and in the early sixties my father and our family became naturalised New Zealanders.”

Later, the cousins worked on a dairy farm at Te Hoe, returning to India after World War I. Mastan thinks his grandparents were married in India around this time. “Granddad had to come and go; they were on work permits which only lasted for a few years.”

In the 1920s Mehan came back to New Zealand, leaving his bride behind. Mastan believes he had some employment planting pines in the government-owned Kaingaroa State Forest, also travelling as far south as Taranaki to the farm of Tahupotiki

In the early 1930s, after an elder brother sold his sheep farm in Australia and retired to India, Mehan also went home for a time, returning to New Zealand in 1935 with his son Balwant Singh, Mastan’s father, who by now had finished his schooling.

“Dad and Granddad cut flax again around Ngatea for a year or two, until it ran out. Then they bought their own farm at Waitakaruru, on the Miranda Road.

Animal rescue efforts rewarding

Jacqui Emmett has always had a strong love for animals. From a young age she was taught to be kind to animals, to help them, and where possible nurse them back to health. Her husband Barry and daughter Charlea share that passion.

After the family bought a four acre lifestyle block near Te Akau in 2011, they set to work with the goal of becoming self-sufficient.

“Our first six months was moving in and trying to shape up the overgrown land which had been unoccupied for more than six months,” said Jacqui.

“With an aim at self-sufficiency, we knew we were too small to farm properly but knew we had enough [land] should any animal in the area need a home.”

Although setting up a lifestyle animal rehoming sanctuary wasn’t the couple’s original intention, it just grew from their love of animals.

Jacqui welcomes everybody to visit the animals and especially enjoys educating children who may not necessarily get out to a farm.

After Auckland resident Dee Phoenix visited Little Acres Farm to pick up a feral goat as a Christmas present for her partner, she began thinking about Jacqui’s animal rescue efforts on her journey home. Dee wanted to find a way to ‘pay it forward’.

“I left with my wee goat, named Lawn Moa, and couldn't help being caught up in her plight/dream and thought I would rally a few of my mates together and we could get down there to get her started on her way,” said Dee. Charlea spends some one-on-one time with a young goat

Their Little Acres Farm has since opened its gates to a large number of lifestyle animals, all needing a home.

“We have been taking in animals and rehoming them for the past year,” said Jacqui.

“It started with unwanted roosters/ hens, and then through word of mouth we were asked to take in orphan lambs, surplus calves, pigs, geese, ducks and so it grew.”

The family work in with the Hamilton branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

“Some animals have arrived emaciated and we have spent many sleepless nights bottle feeding and even syringing milk into them to slowly bring them back to full health and at least have a chance,” said Jacqui.

“Others are in perfectly good condition but circumstances forces their owners to seek a new home and quickly.”

Little Acres Farm is a non-profit organisation. The family finance the costs of running the animal sanctuary themselves, with just one income. Barry works full time and whenever possible takes overtime to help with the expenses and care that the animals need.

“We operate it on the spirit of koha,” said Jacqui.

“Many times we have gone without food to ensure the animals are fed.”

Local farmers also offer plenty of practical support with drenching, shearing and extra grazing.

Although good management, hygiene and a routine play a huge part in keeping the animals content and healthy, the family spend a lot of time working closely with them.

“It’s not all about health care or food requirements,” said Jacqui.

“The love they receive here, we believe plays a huge part in their recovery process.

“They learn to trust humans again, learn love, and learn what quality of life is.”

The family often take in ‘aggressive’ roosters or ‘wild’ animals, which they quietly work with to tame them enough to be rehomed.

Jacqui said the best method they have found is to spend heaps of one-to-one time with them mixed with a good helping of love and kindness.

“We spend hours sitting with our roosters and hens, stroking and soothing them until eventually they become used to human contact.”

“The same works for the other animals too — lots of love, patience and many hours of undivided attention,” she said.

“Then those moments when at last

Jacqui said they were stunned at this random act of kindness from a total stranger.

The property makeover, held recently, attracted over 50 volunteers who gave their time and efforts to the project.

“They (the volunteers) tremendously,” said Jacqui.

Trace element application methods

Plants have evolved nutrient uptake systems that most suit their particular environment Before we learned we could increase growth by applying organic manures and ultimately, manufactured fertiliser, plants had to make do largely with whatever they could scavenge with their roots from the soil, supplemented by deposits of excreta from grazing animals or, even less evenly, the decay of dead animals themselves. Plants can also take up nutrients in gaseous form — like N as ammonia gas — through their stomata, which are tiny holes in the leaves.

Some plants have developed smart ways of improving the availability of nutrients that are in the soil, such as excreting acid hydrogen ions from

their roots, which replace calcium and other cations on clays, allowing them to be ‘swopped’ for the hydrogen.

Others excrete chemicals that make existing soil acidity, particularly soluble aluminium, less toxic.

This is not to say however that plants cannot take up nutrients through their leaves. They are opportunists, like most living organisms. The main difference in the design of leaves and roots is that the former have a layer of protective wax covering them, which is produced by the outer or cuticle layer of soils. This cuticle wax provides protection against excessive sunlight, dust and so on.

Cuticle wax is repellant to water, more or less depending on the plant type. Therefore products designed for

foliar uptake often contain what is called an ‘adjutant’, chemicals designed to improve passage of the product through the cuticle.

Foliar uptake is most efficient in the morning or later afternoon, as the wax tends to be more water repellant during the hotter part of the day (to reduce water loss from inside the plant).

Generally, what nutrient gets taken up through the leaves does so within four hours of application. Most of the remainder falls or gets washed off the leaves through to the soil, although if what remains dried on the leaves gets rewetted by dew overnight, more can be absorbed the next morning.

There are limits to how much nutrient can be taken up through the leaves.

Excessive loadings on the leaves with soluble nutrients at any one time can cause ‘leaf burn’. However, plants can easily take up their requirements of most trace elements through the leaves, and a considerable proportion of fertiliser N growth-boost requirements.

The advantage of applying trace elements in liquid form to enable foliar uptake is that this avoids the very high soil fixation losses that occur with many soil-applied trace elements, and requirements can be met with only one application per year. In many cases, foliar-applied trace elements are 10-20 times more efficient than are soil-applied.

With fertiliser N, foliar application as a solution or fluid (a high-solids liquid) is typically twice as efficient as is granular urea, provided a urease inhibitor such as NBPT is included if urea is the foliar-N source, or the nitrification inhibitor DCD if ammonium sulphate is being used.

Another advantage of foliar application of N is that additives such as trace elements, gibberellic acid and weedicides can easily be incorporated.

In addition, major nutrient requirements (P.K.S) can be incorporated in a range of particle sizes, with the deliberate aim of ensuring that the majority falls through the leaf onto the soil, avoiding ‘leaf burn’.

Does diet affect hoof health As we now are in the holiday season it may be a good time to think about food. Food for cows, I mean! There is still a lot of discussion on whether or not diet has an effect on hoof health. If we think about the many different ways our human bodies can react to various foods and the outward symptoms we observe, then it is not illogical to also think that our cows can present with physical symptoms that are indicative of dietary imbalances or intolerances.

I am a strong advocate for the inclusion of a greater amount of straw in our cow’s diet. One of the main arguments I encounter with this suggestion is that straw would substitute grass and Example 1 therefore minimise energy intake and subsequently reduce milk production. I am not a nutritionist, but I would like to explain what has influenced my thinking based upon my regular observations of the cows’ feet I deal with. With this evidence you can make up your own mind whether or not diet has an impact on hoof health.

The sole ulcer in the picture is just an advanced stage of a normal bruise. If the bruising happens because of external force then why do they look so similar? If they were caused by standing on stones then I would expect a much more even pattern over the whole claw. Sometimes I clean the wall of the claw with my grinder just to see what symptoms can be found there. In the second picture you can see some haemorrhage in the wall of the claw. How does it get there? If you look at this evidence, it is hard to argue that those bruises are caused by the physical causes that so many people believe.

I appreciate that disproving one theory doesn’t prove another. So, I can’t say that this evidence is conclusive, that it is diet that causes the problems for those cows, but I can say that there has to be a problem with the corium (live tissue) on the inside of the claw.

is a beef cow! This animal doesn’t even know what a stone looks like. It doesn’t get pushed over tracks, doesn’t have to stand on yards and isn’t under stress. So, if it is not physical force that caused this problem, and the young lush grass had nothing to do with it, then what caused this sole ulcer?

One other thing I want to mention is water.

Cows would do much better if they had plenty of access to water. Often when they leave the paddock for milking they don’t have any water available until they get back into the paddock.

That is way too long, especially on hot days.

I wonder how it would go if there were single drinking pots in every stand on the platform in the cow shed. It would be a good way to get cows onto the platform and may even work better than meal. I would be very interested in receiving your feedback on this topic.

We trim around 15,000 cows in a year.

This is a combination of preventative and curative trimming. Out of those 15,000 cows there may be a handful of cows that show no haemorrhage at all; so, therefore, most cows in New Zealand have haemorrhaging or bruising in their hooves. Admittedly, in some of those cows you have to look carefully for the haemorrhage but, nevertheless it is there.

The interesting thing is that most cows have the same pattern of haemorrhage where the main bruise is in the spot where the sole ulcer is shown on the cow in picture 1.

celebrate boat’s centenary

One-hundred years ago the MV Cygnet began regular journeys up the Mokau River, carrying supplies and providing a lifeline to many people living in the vicinity. To mark the boat’s centenary, recognise its history and contribution to the community, a celebration is planned for March 8/9.

Daily cruises — a 3 hour round trip including a stop at our native bush picnic site.

Initially commissioned by Victor Sjolund, the Cygnet delivered supplies to those people living along the river.

it was used as a ferry service for the next 20 years. It was then left in a paddock until New Plymouth couple Rex and Tracey Mather rescued it in 1993, restored it and established Mokau River cruises.

Neil and Dawn Colman took ownership of the boat and Mokau River Cruises five years ago.

It was originally Dawn’s brother-in-law, Gavin, who introduced the couple to the Cygnet. Gavin was interested in buying the boat and suggested Dawn and Neil might like to live in Mokau and run the business.

Dawn said Neil had only ever been on other peoples fishing boats and she’d only been on a boat twice.

“We both fell in love with the boat and thought spending our days cruising up the Mokau River would be a great lifestyle.”

Neil handed in his resignation as a Fonterra tanker driver in Hawera and booked into a skipper’s licence course in Nelson while Dawn started packing.

Sadly on Neil’s last night of work at Fonterra, the couple received a phone call to say Gavin had died suddenly from a heart attack — age 58.

“Short story is we decided to buy the cream boat and live his dream.”

But it wasn’t all smooth sailing in the beginning. Six weeks into the new venture, Neil fell off a farm bike and broke his collar bone.

“We were going to be out of business before we’d even started, and we found out that as long as Neil was on the boat, I could take charge,” said Dawn.

“So with his arm in a sling, I took control along with the help of Kylie, our daughter.”

And this was after Neil had originally promised Dawn that all she would ever have to do was make cups of tea and talk with their passengers.

“We will be offering a $300 prize for the best dressed in yesteryear costume, there will be vintage cars to view, plus many more activities yet to be confirmed,” said Dawn.

Neil and Dawn also intend to offer short boat trips during the afternoon for those attending the centenary.

All profits made on the day will be going to Mokau Primary School and St John ambulance.

“Neil and I aim to give the personal touch to each trip — it often feels like a family day out starting off as strangers and ending as friends.”

The Cygnet has also been booked on numerous occasions to use for celebrations up the Mokau River.

For old hands who have done it all before, this should be all the reminder you need. But for the rest of us, here are a few tips from a professional house painter which could save you time and money — Firstly, make sure you’ve prepped your surface well. Wash down the area you want to paint and treat it with a moss and mould remover before the big day. Very rough areas will need a sand, and this is a good opportunity to check the condition of timber and weatherboards. There’s no point painting over rotten timber, and a little bad news now is easier fixed than leaks along the line.

Secondly, choose the right paint for the job. That old tin in the garage you kept for just such an occasion may have seen better days — it’s best to start with the right stuff. That means a modern, weatherproof paint which

can handle icy rain and scorching sun — also the right kind of paint for the surface and materials you’re covering.

If you’re unsure, talk to your local paint and hardware people, who will have all the know how to help.

When it’s time to paint, remember to wait for the driest part of the day. Painting very early or very late can mean that there’s moisture in the air — the arch enemy of a good paint job! On a safety note, check to see that your ladders and trestles are on solid level ground, and look out for those overhead cables.

Finally, do make sure that the most important tools of a satisfying painting job are on hand — a portable radio to keep you up to date with the sports results, and a cold drink or two to keep your spirits up in the hot sun!

With all these in place it’s hardly a chore at all to keep the old homestead looking beautiful.

A recent open day held on the property of Edgecumbe farmer Bruce Woods has proven a huge success for organisers and rural industry guests alike.

Keynote speakers on the day, such as Dr Sue Macky from Dairy Production Systems and Dairy NZ’s Cameron Bierre agree — smarter ideas such as this to tackle the warm summer climate can really boost farmers’ bottom line.

“One of the aims is to improve feed conversion efficiency and get more milk for the same amount of feed given to the herd,” says Simon. “But it doesn’t stop there — cow comfort and welfare is of primary importance. Aztech focus on managing cows’ rest, feed, space, water, air and light. Once these primary welfare principles are met, that’s when happy cows produce more milk.”

Others may be keen to maximise the value of the home they already own.

So it’s timely to share some top tips from the people at the forefront of property — real estate professionals — as to what really makes a difference at sale time.

Bathrooms and kitchens are seen as not only the most functional rooms of the home — they are also an indicator of the quality of its outfitting and construction, and provide a showcase for modern design. Preventing facial eczema Facial Eczema is a disease caused by fungal spores from the fungus Pithomyces chartarum that produce a toxin which when ingested by cattle can lead to the damage of liver and bile ducts.

This fungus (FE) can cause lower milk production and occasionally death from liver damage. The damaged liver is unable to rid the body of wastes and the breakdown product of chlorophyll build up in the body causing sensitivity to sunlight, which can then lead to inflammation of the skin.

The first signs of FE usually show up as a drop in milk production soon after the intake of toxic spores (sub clinical FE), other signs may include cows being restless at milking time, seeking shade and licking their udder.

As facial eczema becomes more obvious, another drop in milk production may be seen and exposed un-pigmented skin may thicken and peel, especially prone are the white areas on cattle, teats and udder and inside the hind legs may also be affected. It is important to remember that not all animals may show physical signs of clinical facial eczema, but some may have had liver damage occur (sub clinical FE).

Facial Eczema spores are produced when minimum grass temperature are above 12° for two or three nights and humidity is usually high, this can occur in the months (January to May).

The fungus grows on soft matter in the base of the pasture, so hard grazing during this period of increased spore activity may also increase the risk of spore uptake by cattle.

Prevention should start early with Zinc treatment, ideally two to three weeks before the spore growth danger period, for the most beneficial protection.

One product that is suitable is Zinc 50 from Vetpak, it is a free flowing Zinc Oxide 50% liquid suspension to aid in the treatment and prevention of Facial Eczema in cattle and sheep, and is ideally suited for drenching or adding through an inline water medication system. Zinc 50 is suitable for long term daily dosing until the pasture to be grazed is safe from fungal spores.

Zinc 50 has a nil milk withhold period and is suitable for dairy cows. Zinc 50 is available from your local veterinarian.

Another product in the Vetpak stable is Green Apple Flavouring, which is a ready to use liquid flavour additive designed to mask unpleasant tastes such as Zinc Oxide.

Green Apple can be added to drinking water, dry feed or mineral drenches such as Zinc Oxide or Magnesium Sulphate/Chlorides and this makes it an ideal partner when using Zinc products to treat Facial Eczema.

A massive milestone for this Kiwi battler Forty years is a long time in farming — ask any veteran farmer and they’ll tell you the same! But forty years in the harsh, unforgiving and rugged New Zealand rural sector is even tougher on a farm bike.

Two-day Tussock Buster in March

Considered the largest trail bike ride event in New Zealand, the Tussock Buster is marked on the calendar for March 22-24.

Well over 250kms of marked riding trails have been incorporated into this ride, utilising 63,000ha of the Waiouru Army training area.

The Waiouru Army training grounds and surrounding farmland is usually out of bounds for members of the public. But several opportunities to ride over and view the central plateau’s spectacular scenery arise each year when Offlimits, a registered charitable trust, obtains access to the area.

Over 250kms of marked riding tracks within the Waiouru Army training area’s 63,000ha have been incorporated into the Tussock Buster trail ride from March 22-24

Trough Valve Problems?

Joint inflammation This month we look at inflammatory problems other than arthritis that affect joints and surrounding tissue. The most common are bursitis and tendonitis.

Bursitis is a very common often debilitating joint problem.

Our mobile joints such as knees, hips, shoulders and elbows have little fluid filled sacs called bursae. These allow for smooth joint function especially in the parts of joints that are subject to a lot of friction. They allow tendons, bones and muscles to move freely. Bursitis occurs when the bursa membrane becomes inflamed and can swell to a larger size.

Another form of inflammatory joint pain is tendonitis. Tendons are the tough form of connective tissue that attached muscles to bones and are very important in joints.

Tendons can become inflamed from overuse or injury. Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is often caused by repetitive straining of the tendon. Once inflamed it can be a difficult condition to deal with.

The key to nutritional therapy is to make sure you ‘starve’ inflammation from your diet by avoiding high omega 6 plant oils while maximising omega 3 rich fish, fish oil and some seeds. The one exception to the omega 6 rule is evening primrose oil that while high in omega 6 is very anti-inflammatory because its gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) restricts immune system generated inflammation. My favourite anti-inflammatory nutrients are OPC’s, resveratrol, curcumin (turmeric extracts) and of course omega 3 fish oils. With supplements it is all about covering as many anti-inflammatory bases as possible and to get maximum anti-inflammatory benefits from every dollar you spend.

Sometimes bursitis can be caused by a bacterial infection and will need treatment with antibiotics. The standard non-infective bursitis usually responds well to antiinflammatory medication.

Sometimes though it can become a chronic condition and cause semi-permanent joint pain. I find that bursitis responds very well to nutritional therapy.

Carpal tunnel syndrome can be cause by inflamed flexor tendons which causes swelling in the wrist which compresses the median nerve. I was once an inflammatory right arm train wreck with bursitis in my elbow, right hand carpal tunnel and severe inflammation of right hand tendons. At one stage my right hand was so swollen and painful that it probably would have been more comfortable to be without it. Fortunately these have all resolved and it is wonderful to have my hand back!

Strong demand for NZ logs in China continues to underpin increased harvest activity throughout the country. November last year saw a whopping 1.3 million JAS M3 export logs produced in NZ, a record for that month, and most destined for China of course.

Domestic log prices have started the year flat, however there is pressure to increase price as the stronger export prices suck volume from the supply chain.

With rainfall in January as low as 10% of normal in many North Island regions, roading costs are being kept to a minimum and contractors are achieving higher production levels. This has been a great summer for woodlot owners to capture strong prices as well as have a great family holiday.

However the shine can quickly be lost with tinder dry conditions increasing the risk of fire. With most woodlots either uninsured or under insured, losing any of your trees to fire is a devastating experience. A Forests and Rural Fire policy might help you recover fire-fighting costs, but it won’t replace your trees. Clarify your insurance policy or talk further to your insurance broker if you are uncertain. A few simple precautions can greatly reduce the risk and incidence of fire while contractors are operating in your forest in periods of high fire danger. These

A passion for jewellery
