The two ‘sizeable incidents’ occurred this month in the Pueto Stream catchment on a property near Aratiatia and were on pumice soils which can be particularly prone to sheet and gully erosion. The upper Waikato-Taupo area manager for the regional council, Anne McLeod said the washouts “underline the need for farmers to take measures to help prevent erosion, especially at times of the year, such as spring, when sudden downpours can occur when land is being worked on.” “There’s a danger that these downpours can wash large amounts of sediment into waterways and affect water quality.” Details of exactly what has happened in the two incidents are still being checked but the erosion on the Pueto Stream catchment farm appears to have followed cultivation and pasture

establishment which has exposed loose soil. The Aratiatia incident is thought to have been a ‘reactivation’ of erosion that was occurring previously. Council staff have flown over the two sites to assess the magnitude of the incidents and help establish what has happened. “As we look into these events, we will contact land owners to reinforce best practice land management principles for pumice soils given the types of downpours that can occur around Taupo,” said Ms McLeod. “No regional council rules are known to have been broken at this stage but it is important that property owners are following best practice, given the vulnerability of pumice soils to erosion in the type of intense storm events experienced in our area at this time of the year.” Ms McLeod said land owners could also help minimise erosion risks by “limiting the amount of work undertaken at any one time rather than trying to do all of the work at once. “We encourage property owners to seek advice on such issues before they start work.” She stressed the latest incidents did not specifically involve so-called “pine to pasture” conversions in the upper Waikato catchment but added these also needed to be carefully managed to help avoid sediment ending up in waterways. “Pine to pasture conversions can play a role in sedimentation of waterways as they can be a catalyst for ground disturbance,” said Ms McLeod. Council acts on safe boating

Staff from the Waikato Regional Council will be assigned to patrol some of the region’s busiest waterways over the festive season and summer and have put together the top five safe boating essentials. “While you’re enjoying the holiday season, our harbourmasters will be on the job patrolling our inland and coastal waterways,” said navigation safety programme manager, Nicole Botherway. “Harbourmasters will be focussing on spreading the word about the new lifejacket rules which are aimed at keeping everyone safe when out on the water. “In a boat, the skipper is responsible for the safety of everyone on board, which includes making sure lifejackets are being worn. “If you’re in a vessel that is six metres or less and you are not at anchor, everyone on board needs to put on a lifejacket that is a good fit for them. This rule applies to all types of vessels, including power boats, kayaks, dinghies, yachts and jet skis.” Mrs Botherway listed the top five safety tips from the council’s harbourmasters: • Wear a lifejacket — make sure it is a good fit and securely fastened. • Carry communication devices — check for coverage and make sure they are waterproof so you can get help when you need to. • Avoid alcohol and boating — save it until you’re back on dry land. • Check the weather, tides and swell before you head out — it’s better to know what is happening than playing roulette with people’s lives. • Use the 1⁄3 — 1⁄3 — 1⁄3 rule with your fuel — a 1⁄3 for your trip out, a 1⁄3 for the trip home and a 1⁄3 just in case. Mrs Botherway also encouraged water users to download the new MarineMate app — free from the app store for any iPhone or Android device — so they can access critical information from the palm of their hand. Anyone unsure about Waikato’s navigation safety rules can contact their local harbourmaster by calling 0800 800 401 or go to www. waikatoregion.govt.nz/boatsafety.

n injury experienced through playing netball and basketball, followed by advice to look for a sport with less rebounding involved, led Sheree towards woodchopping. Her husband, Alastair, was already a serious competitor in the sport when Sheree decided to try it out. Together Sheree and Alastair teamed up as a Jack and Jill double-sawing pair, competing for many years. At the North Island and New Zealand Championships, as well as the New Zealand World Championships which is open to all other competitors around the globe, the couple won titles and broke several records, some of which still stand today. Sheree said she become totally obsessed with the sport and the couple trained constantly. “Initially it was a little difficult to enter what was predominantly a male domain. “Being the only woman competitor at the time, I competed against the men many times and held my own on occasions.” The couple’s two children, Shamice and Dahne, also competed in the sport

Dahne and Sheree paired up to complete in the Jill and Jill double-sawing events for a couple of years. “Both Shamice and Dahne supported us in our woodchopping ventures as our five grandchildren do today,” said Sheree. As Sheree’s enthusiasm for the sport grew stronger, she decided to branch out into other aspects of the sport which included underhand chopping and axe throwing. “My determination to compete was like an addiction,” she said. “I was hoping it would encourage other women to compete and also maybe we would have a New Zealand Women’s team.” In 1995, Sheree aimed to compete in the women’s events at the World Championships in the United States. She trained hard for the five months leading up to the event. But after arriving in Canada, Sheree become extremely ill

and doctors discovered she had contracted Legionnaires Disease, presumably from the aircraft’s air-conditioning. “I was in isolation and bedbound for some time, losing 12 pounds in 10 days.” Yet Sheree was still determined to compete at the World Championships. She said Alastair agreed to take the four-day drive to the contest venue in Hayward, Wisconsin. “I lay in the back of the car the whole journey — it was a nightmare. “In saying that it also gave me the time I needed for mental preparation and focus.” On their arrival in Hayward, Sheree spent most of her time in the first aid unit in an air-conditioned room. The competition just happened to coincide with a heat wave hitting the area. With Alastair’s help, Sheree Photo courtesy of Al Subera appeared in the line-up, Sheree has won several world titles draped in cold, wet towels. Sheree said when the event started, exhibitions at the Ohio State Fair with her mind overtook her body and she won Hank Peters Lumberjack Shows as well. Sheree also competed in the ESPN the race. “My first world title on half a banana Great Outdoor Games which included and drink supplement which I had woodchopping and sawing events. Alastair and Sheree later travelled first class flights, my own limousine through Canada and the United States and driver, first class hotel — the on an annual basis, competing on the complete works.” Sheree said she was astounded to be lumberjack circuits for up to ten weeks at a time. The couple took part in nominated for such a prestigious event.

“My category was best outdoor sportsperson along with Venice and Serena Williams, and David Beckham, to name a few. “Although I didn't feature in the awards, I was honoured to be part of this wonderful event. It’s something I would've never imagined in my lifetime.” With frequent, international competitions, the New Zealand Axemen’s Association decided Sheree should have her own official representative uniform. Sheree planned the uniform, incorporating a fern design which also currently features on the New Zealand men’s and women’s uniforms. Alastair and Sheree both originate from Taranaki, moving to Te Aroha 14 years ago. They belonged to the Taranaki Axemens Club for many years prior to their move to the Waikato. The pair are currently members of the Rotorua Axemens Club.

“We both have farming backgrounds so the sport of woodchopping was quite fitting for us both,” said Sheree. The Taylor’s poultry farm, which sits directly under the Kaimai Range and adjoins Department of Conservation land, has provided an ideal training base for the couple. “Alastair has been my coach and only sponsor, as well as support crew, as long as I’ve been involved with the sport,” said Sheree. “We’ve had some amazing journeys and experiences together. “To share the same interest is something I will always consider very special in a partnership.” Sheree aims to stay with woodchopping for some time yet. “I could not imagine my life without it.”

SEPTIC TANK OWNERS How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it.This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs.Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be

operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce SeptiCure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™. We run sheep and cattle too but that’s mainly to cross-graze — and also put in the freezer!” After a season out of the show ring, Tui is looking forward to competing again and also developing her own stud. “I’d love to get back to where I’m quite a competitive rider again. Over the last couple of years I haven’t been so determined but I’m ready to move up the grades in dressage in all levels. Also, now that I have my own stallion — my own stud, as such — I want to put my breed of horses across, have my name behind them and I eventually would like them well known and successful. “Horses have always been my life and they always will be. When I was younger, I was very competitive and my passion was quarter horses, so it was mainly Western riding. In saying that, I was involved in English too and competed well at all the local ribbon days. “I travelled extensively around the North Island but also down to the South Island, and I was offered other people’s horses to ride because I was known as a good rider who could probably sit on anything and make the best of anything!

“I haven’t been graced with a lot of money or the best bred horses but I have had good opportunities and offers from people who saw something in me. After I left home, I had to stand on my own two feet and everything I have done, I’ve had to do for myself. “I left home at about 16 and I haven’t really looked back. I’m pretty proud of where I stand these days.”

Those who oppose supplements rightly state that most New Zealanders do not have outright nutrient deficiencies. What many experts miss is that the human body performs best with optimal levels of key micronutrients. We may only need 30mg of vitamin C to prevent scurvy but the body works best with at least 500mg each day, more if you are unwell and even more if you smoke. Our levels of selenium are well below international guidelines. While this may increase the risk of many cancers and other diseases we generally seem to survive on lower levels. Only by using well formulated supplements can you guarantee that you body is getting the right amounts of all 20+ essential minerals, all the vitamins and then the wide range of biologically active antioxidants that have significant protective benefits. A full B complex is important but 200–400IU of natural vitamin E and 1000IU of vitamin D are even more important. Beta carotene is the safer option for vitamin A as your body only converts this A as needed. A good multi should also be a comprehensive multiantioxidant. My favourite general purpose antioxidant is a patented grape seed extract (OPC) ActiVin™. You can read about this at www.activin.com. To this I like to include lutein for eyes, lycopene for prostate, hesperidin, bilberry and goji for circulation and immune support plus other synergistic compounds. When selecting a product your first check should be the formula. Secondly ask about the quality of the actual ingredients and thirdly whether the company is really interested in your health or just selling you products. See whether the company is able and willing to give you personalised advice and cares enough to track your progress to ensure you are reaching your goals. Give me a call for further information. While our farms are drying up due to the hot, dry weather it is making the stock feed supply decline and recently harvested supplements are already being fed out by farmers. Last week we met our legal consultants in Auckland who specialise in dealing with banks. It is surprising the number of actions that are currently against the banks, taken by individuals who claim that they have been wronged. Some of these claims now amount to some millions and there has been some success in actions that have been taken, where banks have not followed the due process that is required of them, when lending out their money. Bank clients do have the right to seek a review as to whether the bank has followed due process, in their particular borrowings. We all know there have been a significant number of farms coming on the market and are being sold at less than the bank’s mortgage. While we accept that people should be prudent in their borrowings and seek the appropriate advice that they can afford to borrow the money, there have been cases where bank lending personnel have processed the loans without acquiring the independent valuations and the projected income streams have been overly optimistic.

There is case law that shows that Banks can be liable where it has been proven that they have not followed due process in their lending and have become a contributing factor, in setting up clients to fail. If you are being pressured by your lender and you feel that you are being unfairly treated and wish to seek further information as to what options you can take in having a review of your position, you are most welcome to contact Farmers of New Zealand Inc. The big news this week was the 24 year prison sentence that was dealt to Allan Titford following a recent court hearing dealing with a multitude of charges. I personally was involved in seeking a settlement package for Allan Titford and the Aranga farmers who were affected by the Waitangi Tribunal recommendation that their land be returned to Maori claimants. It came as a big surprise to me, the actions of Allan Titford and the charges that were laid against him, but I concede that Allan was a very complex individual. I found Mrs Titford to be a very quiet

person. She was a prolific record keeper. Every time I met her, she was always writing copious amounts of paperwork concerning Allan’s view of the claim. I was directly involved in persuading the Hon. Doug Graham the Minister of the Waitangi Tribunal in settling Titford for the sum of $3.8 million. Prior to this, the then government had resolved not to deal with him due to the fact that they claimed that he had made

threats against the Prime Minister of the time. At the time I maintained that Allan Titford’s behaviour resulted from the pressure that he was placed under, due to what we all believed was a threat against his property rights. When one looks at the charges that he has been convicted of, I can only say that I hope that Mrs Titford and her family receive the necessary support that they deserve. Her apology to the Te Roroa people says it all.

Sporty new look for a serious contender by Andy Bryenton

The terms ‘Great Wall’ and ‘value for money’ have been seen next to each other in the automotive sections of newspapers and magazines around the world for several years now. So it’s no surprise to learn that the new V-series dual cab ute from the Chinese manufacturer represents a savvy investment, especially for those who want a no-nonsense work vehicle. But to simply focus on the price of the V240 is to do something of a disservice to this new offering from Great Wall, who are making a concerted effort to win over New Zealand and Australian buyers by improving the styling, features and quality of their fleet. It’s a strategy which the now well-established Japanese automakers went through in the 1970s and 80s, but one which has been

Valued at

$

compressed into a shorter timeframe by Great Wall. Beginning with the outer skin, there have been big cosmetic changes to make the new Great Wall ute look better than ever. The V240 double cab Sports edition gains the same kind of trim you’d expect to see on a much pricier vehicle — alloy sports bar, running boards, 20" rims — along with a profile which (by no accident) recalls the popular Holden Colorado or Isuzu D-Max. Certainly still the look of a tough work-horse rather than a chrome-laden show pony, but that’s all to the good

PLUS...

$200 WORTH OF FREE GEAR when financed with YMF!

Comes with mounting kit and waterproof case!

considering the hard-working market which Great Wall utes appeal to. Inside, the spartan approach has also been rolled away, with leather trim, air conditioning and all the buttons and dials you would expect to see on the latest Ford, Holden or Toyota. A threeyear warranty, backed up by three years of roadside assistance are also a clear sign that Great Wall take their build quality seriously. The 2.4L petrol engine of the V240 may not set the world on fire with sheer power, but it’s a gutsy and willing powerplant, mated to a tried-and-true

manual box, forgoing all of the highspec dual clutch, semi-sequential or CVT tech which comes loaded as standard on many new vehicles. Here, under the hood, is a glimpse of the of the Great Wall philosophy which has seen the brand grow into a trusted name. Build it simple, build it tough, and keep the customer happy with good fundamentals. Adding a little luxury and a fresh look to this basic recipe has only made the allure of Great Wall sweeter, and the V240 Double Cab Sports may be the ‘crossover’ point which sees this growing brand become truly mainstream.

Capturing thrills for a lifetime

by Andy Bryenton

Yamaha’s range of fun bikes have proven understandably popular with their target audience over the years. They combine thrills and speed for young novice riders with the kind of safety features which keep their Mums and Dads from fretting — and they manage this with race-proven technology. Whether on two wheels or four, the Yamaha range has steadily kept up with the latest off-road engineering forged in the MX arena. This year’s crop of blue and white machines are a prime example of why their popularity remains evergreen. But there’s one accessory which Yamaha are offering this year which has not been seen before on its fun bike range. It’s something a little out

of the ordinary too — not a new kind of brakes, a sportier exhaust system or a gel-padded seat, but a camera. Think about the sheer popularity of sites like YouTube, and this suddenly makes perfect sense. From the classic PW50 (the bike which has launched many an MX career), to the bigger, more powerful TT-R125, there are going to be moments which riders want to show the world. Everything from the first start of the engine to the first lap of the paddock — then all the way up to recording mud-slinging tight turns, big air and memorable victories for posterity.

Yamaha dealers are giving away free waterproof high-def action cameras, complete with mounting kits, with every fun bike sold this holiday season. With easy tools to rip your video files from the HD cam to your computer, there’s never been an easier way to share with

relatives, friends and the world your adventures out there riding trails and enjoying the outdoors. After all, there’s plenty of great scenery to show off here in New Zealand, and a Yamaha fun bike or quad is a great way to get amongst it.

“This is an event that a number of large machinery businesses have been waiting for to come back, and they have been very suppor tive,” says Mr Reymer. “After the last event we held here ‘Ag in Action 2011’, we knew the concept was right, and the importers and New Zealand manufacturers were keen for a followon event. There’s nothing like seeing it working in front of your eyes. The large demonstration plots were snapped up quickly by major machinery importers and manufacturers who instantly saw the value in getting their machines moving. “The machinery buyers are becoming more discerning and overseas shows such as Grasslands and Muck in the United Kingdom have proven that buyers want to see it working before making the decision to buy.” As well as demonstration plots the site will feature an AgTrader Alley

A health and safety solution

With all the changes that are upon us with regards to health and safety now is the perfect time to look at what you are doing in order to implement an effective and practical health and safety system. “Because the Health and Safety Act tells us what we have to do, but not so clearly how to do it, there is a lot of confusion as to what is required,” says HarzardCo’s Hamish Norwood. “Nothing in the Health and Safety Act says that you need a complicated paper-based manual, and when you consider that most people do not read past the first few pages, let alone use all the wonderful forms inside, you have to ask what use the manuals are. “You need a system that allows you to fulfill your health and safety obligations, without a lot of fuss and paper, something that works and allows you to get on with the job. HazardCo provides exactly that system. “We currently provide a complete health and safety solution for more than 11,000 companies in New Zealand. “The latest development is a robust system that has been designed specifically for the agricultural and horticultural industries.”

The benefits of becoming a HazardCo member include: • Helping to keep everyone safe so they go home unharmed each night;

Norwood added. “We use industryspecific visual resources that are simple and designed to be used easily by everyone. HazardCo takes health and

HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

Last month I was talking about knives and made a start on talking about sharpening knives. I want to stress again that a knife should never be sharpened on the back side because you tend to cut into the hoof rather than taking a slice off.

If you use a bench grinder with either a linishing belt or a rubber disc, you will need to be careful not to overheat the knife. If the knife goes blue while you are sharpening it the steel will soften because it cools down too slowly. Having a knife with a soft steel blade will go blunt very quickly so you ruin the knife when you do that. Have a cup of water next to your grinder and dip the knife in the water on a regular basis. You can’t overcool it but it is easy to overheat. When the blade of the knife is sharp, and you can see that there is a burr along the full length of the blade, you can sharpen the hook. This can be done on the outside or on the inside if you have a rubber disc. We use a rubber disc with a groove in the side about 5mm from the edge. This groove is there especially for the hook of

the knife. Because this disc is made of rubber it is important to have the disc turning away from the operator. You can achieve this by just turning the grinder around so that the start is at the back. If you don’t do that you will damage your knife, your disc and possibly yourself. Once the hook has been sharpened you can take the burr off. We use a cotton disc on our bench grinder for that. Burn some paste into the cotton disc as it is rotating. Just hold the paste against the disc as it spins around. Without the paste the disc is too smooth and it will take a long time to polish the burr of the knife. So every now and again when the cotton disc doesn’t perform very well you just burn some more paste into the disc. The cotton disc is another reason why you have to have the disc rotating away from yourself. If you have followed this procedure properly you will have a knife

that is sharp enough to shave yourself with, however a safer way to test it out would be by trying to cut a normal piece of paper by holding it up in mid-air with one hand and cutting it with the knife in your other hand. It should be sharp enough to slice through the paper by itself — just about! Most people don’t have a bench grinder with the right discs on it and we would be happy to discuss the options available to you. There are sharpening pens on the market. They may get your knife reasonably sharp but it will never do as good a job as a bench grinder. However it can be handy to use a sharpening pen while you are trimming to get the dents out of the edge of the knife if you hit a stone. Using the backside of another knife is very effective for this as well. One more thing I would like to mention concerns the use of doubleedged knives. If you use the proper technique you should be able to trim a cow with one knife. The problem with double-edged knives is that you end up with quite a wide blade which makes it hard to steer your way out of the hoof when you are going too deep, and it is for this reason that I would not recommend them.

FISHING, HUNTING & OUTDOORS

by Andy Bryenton

From the skies to the surf

Anglers love their secret spots — those magic places where the scenery is beautiful, the weather is always just right, and the fish seem to hook up willingly. Some, unfortunately, have become common knowledge, ruining their sense of mystery, but others remain inaccessible, especially around the rugged coastline of the north. Hunters, too, are keen to get out into the back blocks, accessing areas which would usually require a day or two of backpack slogging through tussock and bush. After all, this is the ‘real New Zealand’, the kind of wilderness which you could imagine legends like Barry Crump striding through with rifle and pack. Modern technology has provided the answer to both these outdoor riddles, with the rise of helihunting and helifishing. Growing out of the need for pilots to diversify their portfolios and step outside the bounds of simply topdressing farmers’ fields, both industries have literally taken off in recent years, touted as the perfect way to experience the ‘back of beyond’ — without the back-breaking hike to and from the wild country. Helifishers enjoy the scenic view from the air as they descend on rock-fishing locations that can’t even be navigated by boat. Spots in the Bay of Islands, Cavalli Islands and more are able to be hooked

into by this new method of transport, and as well as just fishing the same pilots can grant access to new horizons for divers as well. Helihunting grew out of the deer boom of the 1980s, which saw many chopper jockeys shooting from the air, or even performing live capture missions. Now these seasoned guides bring hunters into remote areas, with some having access to DOC and private land not available to those on foot, or even on four wheels. And it’s not just the locals who are keen to take to the skies for a day or two of shooting and angling adventure. Foreign tourists have embraced this unique way to get up close and personal with the Kiwi countryside, growing our nation’s popularity as a haven for outdoor pursuits. Nowadays, you’ll even find snowboarders and mountain bikers hailing a helicopter to get them to the best spots — a boost to the industry which keeps many companies flying and allows them to be there when firefighting, search and rescue or agricultural duties call.

SAFETY FIRST

ON THE FARM

One small step in the right direction The lead article in The Press on October 22 was headed Nitrate Risk to Infant Health, with a warning from Canterbury District Health Board medical officer Alistair Humphrey that, ‘a baby could die if nitrate levels are not more tightly controlled’. The term ‘ticking time bomb’ occurred three times in the article and although it was stated that the steady increase of nitrate in groundwater levels in the Canterbury region was not solely the result of farming, there is little doubt that the increased use of nitrogen fertiliser is seen as the main culprit by most people. Reducing the loss of nitrate nitrogen into groundwater is a necessity and pressure will continue to mount until

IF IT’S CONCRETE?

steps are taken — it’s just a matter of how long it will take before fundamental changes are made. It was not until 1995 that farmers in New Zealand began embracing the regular applications of nitrogen fertiliser, primarily urea from Kapuni, first manufactured in 1983 to use surplus energy from the Maui gas field. The 10year time frame between the introduction and regular widespread use of urea is a not unusual period for the uptake of any new product in a market place dominated by traditional and conservative thinking. A significant amount of research had already been by undertaken by AgResearch on the use of urea for the production of out of season pasture growth, however no trial work was available for its long-term use, so the consequences of present practices are unknown, but becoming more evident every day. Nitrogen fertiliser is expensive and although the cost may be put in the supplementary feed budget it is a real expense and with more pasture requiring replacement each year the profit generated from pasture is continuously being squeezed. Although pests, dry weather, and new cultivars are often blamed for the lack

of persistence of ‘permanent’ pastures the real problem nearly always lies with the physical structure of the soil. Soils that have become compacted do not allow plant roots to penetrate more than a few centimetres and these areas are most affected by summer dry and pulling in autumn. Rather than attempt a radical rethink of farming systems there is a small and inexpensive step that can be taken that will significantly reform every aspect of a farm’s operation. The application of Golden Bay Dolomite rapidly improves physical soil structures. Tight compacted soils become more friable allowing plant roots to penetrate to a greater depth. With more root mass plants have access to greater quantities of both moisture and nutrient. More nitrogen is able to be intercepted before reaching groundwater allowing for a reduction in both the frequency and rate of applications. Pastures that are already earmarked for replacement this autumn may only require renovation — however the most obvious effect is the improvement in every aspect of animal health and performance. Animals on properties where dolomite is applied annually at 200–250kg/ ha suffer fewer metabolic disorders in spring, have a lower incidence of mastitis and are more likely to hold to the first insemination. Dolomite can be applied at any time and each tonne of dolomite reduces the liming requirement by a similar amount. Dolomite from Golden Bay is one of those rare natural resources that have a wide range of benefits impacting positively on every aspect of intensive pastoral farming. For more information contact Peter on 0800 436 566 (0800 4 DOLOMITE).

RURAL WOMEN

Perfect Christmas Pudding Ingredients 350gm of mixed raisins, currants, dried cranberries, and sultanas 50g cherries — real ones or glace, your call! 15g slivered macadamia nuts or almonds 50g plain white flour (not self raising) Zest of 1 orange and 1 lemon Freshly squeezed juice of ½ orange and ½ lemon 50g vegetable suet (you can get this from most supermarkets, and in a pinch you can substitute it for frozen, grated butter)

30g breadcrumbs 90g brown sugar 2g mixed spice 1g each of ground nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves 5g salt 2 free-range eggs, beaten Method Place the fruits and nuts into a bowl, drizzle liberally with lemon zest and juice. Pour a large measure (about 100ml or a full shot glass) of brandy or cognac over the mix. Cover and stand overnight. Next day, place this mixture and the remaining ingredients in a large bowl. Mix lightly,

taking care not to ‘bruise’ the fruit pieces. Line your pudding tin with baking paper, and pour the completed mixture in. Seal the top with more baking paper and a layer of foil, as tight as possible. The trick is not just to steam the pudding, but to be able to lift it from the pan when it’s done! Accomplish this with a wide strip of foil looped under the pudding basin, making a ‘handle’. This will come in handy! Place the pudding basin on top of a trivet in a deep-sided pan. Fill this pan with hot water, to half way up the pudding basin. Then cover and bring

the water to the boil. Once the water has boiled, turn it down to a simmer, and wait for 5 hours as the pudding steams. Top up the water as necessary! After this process, the ‘handle’ you’ve made makes it easy to bring the pudding basin out of the water. Cool it, wrap it in greaseproof paper and foil, and let it mature in a cool dark place for as long as possible. Steam for 2 hours before serving as before, and don’t forget lashings of brandy cream or a flambé brandy coating to make this seasonal treat complete.
