General manager Chris Keeping says the finalists are the cream of the crop from all the entries received, and it was a hard-fought battle.

“It was fantastic to attend all 11 regional finals and feel the excitement of the wins and see the journey each finalist has taken, both professionally and personally,” says Mrs Keeping.

“There is a mix of gender, age, farming experience and career backgrounds amongst the finalists. It is very clear that the New Zealand dairy industry is in good health with passionate farmers, managers and trainees with positive attitudes leading the way.

With the need to feed the world’s population of 9.8 billion people by 2050, AgritechNZ is looking at ways New Zealand can scale up its food production to meet the growing global demand.

AgritechNZ chief executive Peter WrenHilton says global food systems will need to transform at an unprecedented speed and scale.

“We are seeking to explore the power of innovation and technology to meet the greater demand on food production. We also have to take into account sustainability and climate change, healthy diets, meat alternatives and nutrition, market efficiency and shaping a national strategy for the future of food.”

Discussions and issues relating to New Zealand agritech will be on the agenda at events during Techweek next month.

“Technology is transforming the way Kiwis grow and sell food as every piece of the supply chain is up for disruption.

By 2050, the global population will demand 70 per cent more food than is consumed today. Feeding these numbers nutritiously and sustainably will require substantial improvements to the global food system,” he says.

“We want to improve and increase our food production through better technology, such as robotics, and we will do that with more collaboration, innovation, and connected capital from overseas. Agritech could be destined to save the New Zealand economy because of the tremendous worldwide demand for food. There is growing evidence that the abundance of processed foods is

JESSICA GUY GREW UP ON HER FAMILY SHEEP AND BEEF FARMS AND WORKING WITH CATTLE FROM A YOUNG AGE HAS LED HER TO AN INTEREST IN FUTURE BEEF NEW ZEALAND.

essica decided to push outside her comfort zone to extend her opportunities in the farming industry and won the 2018 Intermediate Ambassador award.

“I had no idea what to expect when I first entered to become an ambassador but was excited to try something new.

It is an honour to have won, and I am extremely excited to be part of an event that is significant to so many people. I learnt so much from the competition, and I have met many awesome people.

The opportunities that come from the event are endless,” says Jessica. “My family had Friesian bulls, but we didn’t

have a stud animal or anything like that when I was young. Growing up I drenched the cattle, got them in and did the everyday farm chores. We are a tight-knit family, and we had around 1,400 acres — it was cool growing up like that. I went to boarding school at Waterford House because we were quite isolated and we decided to do something different. Boarding school was definitely challenging being away from the family, and I loved going home as often as possible. It made me realise how much I loved the farm.“ Jessica became strongly involved in the Teen Ag club while at school as a way

to stay connected to farming. “I have also been involved in stock judging days at A&P shows, Teen Ag days and other minor events. Doing lots of different things has given me a broad spectrum for the future.

“I was pretty nervous entering to be a Future Beef Ambassador. The weekend was full of learning, competing and looking after your animal. I had no idea you had to weigh, wash and groom our animal on a Friday. It was a shock as I had never actually lead cattle until the event. I did have an understanding of how to be around animals, which made it easier, but I was an absolute novice. Everyone helps you if you are inexperienced, which was encouraging.

The doors opened at 6am the next day to rewash and groom the animals and clean their beds in time for showing.

“You are judged on all of these things if you are going for ambassador. Being an ambassador is a way to extend yourself and learn new skills like writing essays, a CV and apply the knowledge you have gained based on your age and you become a leader to other youth.

The judges watch how you interact, help others and present yourself in all ways including animal showing.

“As Intermediate Ambassador I won a trip to develop my skills. At this stage, I am still discussing my options, but am looking at visiting different studs to gain a better understanding of how they work.”

At present Jessica is studying agri commerce at Lincoln University.

“I am studying a BCom Ag because it is a broad degree and will allow me to pursue many options. During the holidays I help run the home farm, and I assist my dad at his job with cows and beef. I also help my grandpa with his bulls and sheep.

“I also hunt deer with my family. We do this to get meat for the freezer and

I have my own gun and got my gun licence when I was 16 years old. I believe it is important to keep busy with the interests and am a strong believer that nothing gets handed to you. You need to put yourself out there to get to wherever you want to go.

“Throwing myself into all these little competitions and shows has helped me to get established. My brother Ashton is also involved in stock shows and gives me a run for my money.

“Ultimately I want other people to experience the opportunities available.

You can come from not knowing anything to becoming a great shower and stock judge.

“I will always be working in the farming industry; it is so cool and more girls are getting involved now. At Lincoln, there is a lot of like-minded people

Colin Tremain spent seven and a half years in the building industry before changing careers to farming.

“I

built mostly houses, but also schools, industrial buildings and the Te Mihi Power Station north of Taupo. I have a national certificate in agriculture (dairy) level four and am currently enrolled in the diploma in agribusiness management through PrimaryITO,” says Colin.

“I grew up in Reporoa on a 150 cow dairy farm, and have two sisters and three brothers. I moved away from building because I had gone as far as I could in the company that I was with.

Renee and I were expecting our first child, and we wanted to have a change.”

At the time Colin was building a house for a training adviser at Primary

ITO, and he steered the couple in the right direction.

“I used to help on my parents’ farm when I was growing up. Being a small farm, we were involved in most day to day things including milking, building, driving tractors and stock work.

“Renee and I now have three children, and I manage a large dairy farm milking 1,750 cows through two sheds. We carry 1,000-head of young stock and 80 carryover cows. The property is 982 hectares and is hard and steep land. It is my fifth season here; we employ five full-time staff. I enjoy the freedom and diversity of the job and help with everything. Colin believes farming traditions are changing and there will be different ways for people to progress through the industry in the future

Colin grew up on a 150 cow dairy farm and now manages a property with nearly 3,000 animals

bail rotaries and two dairy units and a support unit.

“We have a mixed herd and 500 R1s and 500 R2s. We make our own silage, which we feed autumn and winter and grow turnips for summer and swede for winter for the cows and kale for heifers. Kale is good because they are still teething and swede is too hard on their gums. We also use palm kernel strategically throughout the year.

Colin does rotational grazing depending on the time of year.

“We milk once a day and have cows going back and forwards moving between the two sheds. Mixed age cows go through one shed and heifers through the other and then they are swapped over when late calving with one herd milking 850 cows. We also have one

of the lowest producing herds because some of the land we are farming is extremely steep. I can’t ride a motorbike down it, let alone up it. We just let the cows do their thing and go there after milking, and they walk themselves off to the next paddock, and then we shut the gate after lunch.”

Renee is an AI tech and at present is studying veterinary nursing.

“I was active in Young Farmers for many years and have competed in four district contests and two regional finals. This year was my second and last competition in the regionals due to my age. I had nothing to lose and everything to gain as it is competing across the entire spectrum, from general skills to agricultural knowledge. I enjoyed the personal development aspect of

the contest, especially around public engagement and public speaking.

“Both years I was exposed to new things that I haven’t done before. You are dealing with the top of the class, which is always a good place to be, and you make good industry contacts and are offered support as you progress through your career. I didn’t place in the competition this year, and that is OK; it is a competition, and everyone is there to win, but it is a place to learn and gain experience.

“I believe farming is going through growing pains at the moment. Traditional farming doesn’t look like it will be sustainable long term, and we are discovering a new way for the industry.

How we staff farms and deal with the variable income and regulations we are faced with means we are still finding our way, but I think we will see positive results.

“The opportunities that will be around in five years’ time will look nothing like what we have now.

“We believe there will be new ways of building equity because older farmers who don’t have children coming through the ranks can’t do day to day forever.

Cow value and return to asset and land values are changing, and we will see new ways of progressing. Renee and I are excited to be in the industry, and we intend to look forward to what comes our way.”

by Ann van Engelen Lucy Collin comes from a sheep and beef farming family, and her parents breed Charolais cattle with 110 purebred animals on the property.

L

ucy recently achieved a long-held personal goal of being named the 2018 Allflex Senior Beef Ambassador at the Future Beef event in Feilding. The coveted award came with a cash prize that she used along with a scholarship from the Charolais Breeders New Zealand to pursue her love of Charolais and genetics, which led her to Canada for personal experience.

“I spent two months working on a beef cattle stud in the isolated Canadian village of Miami. It is situated in the

province of Manitoba, and this Miami couldn’t be more different to its United States namesake,” says Lucy.

“I didn’t see a single blade of grass the entire time I was there the ground was always covered by a foot of snow.

Manitoba’s weather is not for the fainthearted, and the temperature sank to minus 25 degrees and did not climb above minus 10 during my stay — it was freezing. I took my thickest, warmest clothes, but the icy Canadian winter is next level.

“I competed at a major Charolais event and was scored the top international points, which was extremely exciting.

We had to tackle a range of modules, including livestock judging and handling.

“I was also invited to work at Steppler Farms in Miami, which is Canada’s second-largest Charolais breeder. I went back over after my exams in November — my job was to help prepare animals for the biggest cattle show in western Canada and the stud’s annual female sale.”

The top animal, a two-year-old heifer, sold for NZ$23,000 at the sale.

“Steppler Farms has more than 900 registered Charolais cattle. They are hardy animals that live outside year-round. They are fed a mix of hay, straw, grass silage, maize and barley.

The grain is grown on a nearby family farm and stored in massive silos. I had never seen silos that big until going to Canada,” said Lucy.

“One of my jobs was to take straw bales and spread them under the trees, so the animals had a warm place to sleep. During calving, cows have to be checked hourly, because the ears of calves born outside can freeze off if they are not brought inside.”

“The Charolais industry is a lot bigger in Canada, and they are one of the most popular breeds of cattle there.

They also have a Canadian Charolais Youth Association.

“Its objective is to strengthen the involvement of youth in breeding and connect enthusiasts from across the country. Every province has its own

youth committee, and there are lots of young people interested in the breed.

I made friends with heaps of CCYA members. A number of them want to visit New Zealand, which is awesome.

“Being named the 2018 Allflex Senior Beef Ambassador has opened up so many doors for me, to be honest, I didn’t realise just how many it would open up.”

Those international connections will prove to be very valuable for Lucy who is in her fourth year studying a bachelor of security studies majoring in biosecurity at Massey University in Palmerston North.

“I am focussing on biosecurity because I recently bought my own Charolais cow for my 21st birthday. I want to breed my own stud cattle, and it is important to have good genetics.

I want to use my biosecurity skills and qualifications to import and export semen,” she said.

Lucy’s passion for the primary industries was sparked at a young age and as a weekday boarder at Iona College in Havelock North, along with fellow student Kate Ward, she helped establish the school’s first TeenAg club in 2013. “I chaired the club from years 11 to 13.

“We went on a couple of farm tours and arranged to have interesting guest speakers come and talk to us. It was a great club,” she said.

“Whilst at school my teammate Megan Hassle and I made it through to the TeenAg Grand Final. I encourage other students to get involved in TeenAg and the Future Beef event because

both organisations provide endless opportunities.” TeenAg clubs are run by

How much better can I be?

Part one The best thing about what I do is to share with clients health improvements they never thought possible. So here is the real question. How much better can I be? Can I have less pain, more mobility and more energy?

There are two parts to any successful nutritional therapy programme.

The first is the actual measures we use. That usually centres on making changes to diet, supplements and in some cases referral to other therapies.

The second is time. We all want fast results when in pain. The problem is that the changes in our bodies that created the problem often occurred for many years. While some people do get faster results, for most it is perseverance during the medium term that really counts.

Over the years I have come to realise that often small changes can make a big difference. Someone could be taking a joint supplement and be getting little benefit. We change the active ingredient quantities, and there are significant improvements.

For example, someone contacted me with significant knee pain from

osteoarthritis. It was painful and limited his mobility. His only medical options were strong pain relief and a future knee replacement.

We made a number of enhancements to his diet. In most cases, this was more about substituting one food for another.

I made changes to his supplement programme in particular targeting 1,600mg of high-grade chondroitin, the same amount of glucosamine and a number of anti-inflammatory antioxidants including curcumin from turmeric.

The results after six months have surpassed what he expected. He has much less pain and in his own words just the odd twinge. He is now able to exercise; he has more energy and feels better.

Following a meeting with the Minister for Agriculture on the commodity levy results recently Apiculture New Zealand is supporting the minister’s plea for greater unity to address existing challenges around bee welfare and biosecurity, food safety and export regulations.

“One of the opportunities we raised with the minister is how we grow the value of our key native and pastoral monofloral honey. It has become a priority for beekeepers given the erosion in prices for all honey types other than manuka. The minister was receptive to looking at how industry and government could work together on identifying the value of other native and pastoral monofloral honey particularly in relation to supporting regional and Maori economic development.”

Protecting your land If you live on a farm or a lifestyle block, having your drainage maintained will ensure excess or wastewater is removed to the correct area during the wet winter months.

Healthy drains help reduce the number of contaminants lost in waterways while also optimising soil moisture and improving pasture production, stock health and the habitat for fish and helpful insects. Hiring a contractor is a good option to fence and clear your waterways, leaving you to take care of other chores on your property. Drains include natural or artificial channels to lower the water table and reduce surface flood risk. Fencing waterways is now an important part of rural life and reduce stock damage from treading the banks.

If you don’t have the time, equipment or knowledge, consider engaging a contractor who can ensure waterways on your property, no matter how big or small, are kept at a maximum of health and are free from debris for the upcoming water volume increase during the coming months.

Prior to the cold weather, check fences are in sound order, especially along the boundary as if stock get out onto the road it is the owner’s responsibility for any damage or accidents caused. Keeping all stock

safe is good management. It takes just one broken fencing wire or one broken post to allow a mob of sheep out onto the road, into a neighbour’s crop or to escape into a forest area. Maintaining your property With winter breathing down our necks it is time to remember that all those jobs that have been put off until tomorrow need to be attended to.

Whether it is purchasing new thermal curtains or carpets, fixing windows and doors against drafts, upgrading the fireplace or getting your long-awaited spa pool — don’t forget the outside also needs care.

Before the wet weather, consider washing the outside of your house, sheds, footpaths and driveways as sometimes required maintenance can be concealed by the slightest amount of moss, debris and clumps of deteriorating leaves. It takes just a small hole from a displaced nail in your roof, or sealer missing from joinery to create a magnitude of water issues including wet ceilings, rotten joists and dampness in your house.

One broken tile or small nail hole is often the cause of a massive amount of water getting into your building without you realising. An old roof can have gaps, which allow the wind to blow rain through. Missing nails also create an environment for roofing iron to be ripped from the building.

That in itself is a dangerous position to be in. One gust of wind can remove an entire roof, and the iron can end up across the farm including on the road.

It also has the ability to slice off a head or drastically injure an animal.

Good downpipes and gutters catch valuable rainwater as well as ensure that your building is not quietly being destroyed by water retention. It is often not seen until the damage is done as it can spill back under the eaves into the internal walls.

Now is the time to ensure they are up to scratch and clear of breaks and debris such as leaves and possibly dead rodents.

That needs to be done not only on houses but buildings of all types, including cow sheds, pig sties, machinery and shearing sheds.

Check your water tanks and rain harvesting systems are not quietly leaking and consider upgrading them or purchasing another if your water requirements have grown. With wet weather on its way, it is a good time to take advantage of keeping your water supply topped up naturally and preparing for the future dry spells, so you have a good supply for your home, garden and animals.

Winter is a time when we want as little as possible to go wrong, so preparing in advance, and calling the experts beforehand is a wise move.

Having a plan and ensuring all that can be fixed or upgraded is done early will

help eliminate unnecessary stress.

New survey research shows farmers are focussed on sustainability and the impacts of climate change more than ever.

The survey, by Nielsen Research, was commissioned by the Ministry for Primary Industries through the Sustainable Land Management and Climate Change Research programme.

“These latest results show that 92 per cent of farmers are focussed on making their farm more environmentally sustainable, up from 78 per cent in the last survey of 2009. That’s really heartening,” says agriculture minister Damien O’Connor.

“Some of the specific actions farmers mentioned were riparian/shelter planting, waterway control, improved fertiliser management and more efficient irrigation systems. That gives us a really valuable understanding of what is front of mind for farmers.

“Slightly disheartening is that only 23 per cent of farmers anticipate an increased focus on reducing their greenhouse gas emissions in the next five years, so that’s something for us all to work on.’’

Minister O’Connor says farmers face a changing climate.

“They need to prepare to cope with the intensifying weather effects of climate change and at the same time reduce their environmental footprint. That takes investment in infrastructure and means you need to be financially viable.

“The coalition government is scoping the development of resources and information for farmers to fill the knowledge gap in ways to reduce emissions, working with the sector to develop practical on-farm knowledge.”

Minister for Climate Change James Shaw says that the results of the survey are consistent with expectations.

“The survey shows that farmers have a better understanding of what they are able to do on-farm to be more environmentally sustainable, with the exception of greenhouse gas emissions reduction — an area where we know farmers feel they need more information and advice.

“The Biological Emissions Reference Group report told us that there are lots of solutions emerging, but that the situation varies from farm-to-farm and so solutions need to be tailored. That is why we are now investing in developing that advice and integrated farm planning tools. We need to support farmers and growers to transition to sustainable land-use through planning and informed decision-making.

“Last year the government consulted on the Zero Carbon Bill, which showed the need to give certainty and direction on the pathway to a low-emissions economy. We will also soon receive the

Year of the nice guy

There’s an old saying that the good finish last and that it’s only an optimist who believes that ‘next year will be the year of the nice guy’. Well, when it comes to ecological credentials, it seems that year has finally dawned. A quick look at the Geneva Motor Show, the European Car of the Year, and our own local sales forecourts reveals that the electric revolution is gathering pace.

Some grumblers will call it nothing but ‘virtue signalling’ that some of the top carmakers in the world are trading in horsepower for voltage. However, you have to admit, machines like the showstopping Pininfarina Battista are both jaw-droppingly pretty and insanely fast. Did it steal the thunder of Bugatti’s Voiture Noir and the new mid-engined Aston Martin Vanquish Vision? Perhaps.

There’s no denying that Aston’s Lagonda SUV concept was 100 per cent electric as well.

Jaguar has scooped its first-ever European Car of the Year award. The only one to go to the Brit automaker, despite the E Type being utterly deserving if a couple of years too early. They’ve done so with the I-Pace, a tidy, unfussy design, which is still clearly a Jag, while clearly encapsulating modern style. It’s also purely electric.

Help for farm waste disposal

The Ministry for the Environment’s Waste Minimisation Fund has allocated $381,000, to help farmers and growers more easily recycle or safely dispose of a wider range of on-farm waste such as agrichemicals, scrap metal, soft plastics and used oil.

Rural recycling programme Agrecovery will manage the project by offering onestop-shop events where farmers and growers can drop off waste. The events will accept a wide variety of waste over and above what Agrecovery’s existing agrichemical scheme accepts.

“This funding will enable the programme to offer a new one-stopshop approach to allow farmers to drop off agrichemicals and their containers as well as other farm waste, including bulk fertiliser bags, used oil, scrap metal, silage/baleage wrap and other soft plastics at the same time,” says associate environment minister, Eugenie Sage.

“Waste on-farm has traditionally been burned, buried or stock-piled, which can have significant health risks and can cause air and water pollution. This project would see rural waste either recycled or disposed of, in an efficient, safe and managed way. This Agrecovery

project will also help develop options for New Zealand’s first mandatory product stewardship for agrichemicals and their containers.” The one-stop-shop approach builds on an existing scheme.

“Currently farmers are able to drop off agrichemical containers at close to 100 collection sites around the country under a voluntary product stewardship scheme run by Agrecovery.”

Agrecovery also collects large quantities of containers and drums from farms and disposes of unwanted agrichemicals. The manufacturers who participate in the programme fund it by paying a levy on the products they sell into the marketplace.

“We all need to take responsibility for reducing the impacts of the products we manufacture, sell and use on nature and the wider environment.

Product stewardship helps us shift away from the ‘take, make and dispose’ economic model to a more efficient and

less wasteful circular economic model where materials are reused or recycled at the end of a product’s useful life.

Burning, burial and bulk storage of waste on farms have been the main methods for managing rural waste traditionally, creating problems that this new project with Agrecovery will help to solve.”

The Ministry for the Environment is also coordinating work on mandatory product stewardship schemes for tyres, refrigerants and lithium ion batteries.

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs:

It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture:

Poor posture is one f the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car.

Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life
