Cathy Prendergast, Katrina Thomas and Alison Ferris are this year’s finalists in the Dairy Community Leadership Awards. They all share the qualities of community leadership, a willingness to share knowledge and a passion for rural life.

The Dairy Women’s Network initiative recognises the unsung heroes of rural communities who share their time and skills beyond the farm gate.

“I have often said that our dairy communities are supported by people just like Cathy, Katrina and Alison,” said DWN chief executive Zelda de Villiers.

“In any rural community you have those special people who keep the wheels of groups and initiatives turning, while continuing to milk the cows and raise families. While it may seem effortless from the outside, we know there’s a huge amount of work and dedication there, and too often it goes unrecognised.”

Cathy lives in the Arohena district in Waikato and is a registered nurse.

She is involved in most of Arohena’s community initiatives and has been a member of the Arohena Rural Women committee for 30 years.

Katrina has worked in the tourism industry for more than 20 years before returning to her farming roots in Southland. In 2012 she became DWN’s regional convenor for Invercargill and is the Southern Regional Hub leader.

She’s involved with several community groups and is editor of the Takitumu Community newsletter.

Alison lives on a 500-cow dairy farm outside Te Kuiti, and her family also own farms in Waikato and Southland. She is active on several community boards and represents DWN’s regional convenors on its board of trustees.

Cathy says her passion for her community, and agriculture, makes community involvement fun.

“It’s not a job for me, I genuinely enjoy giving back to my community. I feel like I’ve got so much out of living here — I’ve

spent most of my life here and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.”

Katrina says she gets a lot of satisfaction from seeing newcomers to the rural community ‘establish themselves’ and find enjoyment in a farming lifestyle.

“I’m constantly meeting new people who have arrived to live in our part of New Zealand. It’s great being able to work with them and help them settle in and see for themselves how great our community is.”

Alison says her journey to community leadership began at a DWN conference in 2014.

“A friend asked me if I wanted to head along, so I went and ended up leaving feeling really inspired.

“I’ve found the opportunities that have been made available to me as a DWN member have given me fantastic experience and an even bigger love of farming and all things rural.”

This year’s award will be presented during the DWN conference in Queenstown on May 11–12.

Scholarship applications open

The Rural Women New Zealand and Access Community Health Scholarship has awarded $39,000 to rural health professionals in scholarship funds during the past 12 years. Applications are now open for the 2017 scholarship programme.

The $3,000 scholarship is aimed at applicants who are working in a professional health field with rural connections, and who wish to further their studies in health or disability studies.

“Access Community Health is proud of its 90-year heritage providing home care to New Zealand communities.

We are very pleased to support the progression and ongoing development of health professionals and services in New Zealand’s rural communities,” said Simon Lipscombe, Access chief executive.

The scholarship represents the ongoing special relationship between Access, now a member of the Green Cross Health group, and its founding organisation, Rural Women New Zealand.

“Since 2004, scholarship recipients have ranged from paramedics through to nurse practitioners,” said Fiona Gower, Rural Women New Zealand National President.

“They have a common aspiration to undertake further training and develop their professional knowledge, so they can continue to provide quality health services in rural communities.”

ohn Vosper is the carer of the 80-hectare property which his great grandfather purchased when he moved from Taranaki many years ago.

“My grandfather milked on farm for many years and then from 1960 his father and uncle took over the property.

My wife and I have been here since 1991,” said John.

“We decided to convert to organics in 2004 and now my son Michael is sharemilking here.

“We were looking for ways of bringing in more value to the business that was economic. There are still three generations being supported by the farm.

“Our pedigree Jersey cows wellbeing is paramount. The herd graze on organic pasture and at times their diet is supplemented with hay, silage and maize.”

All the food production is self contained. John says one of the issues they discovered when they converted was finding organic supplements so they purchased another block to grow their own food.

“We also have our replacements grazing there.”

The milk is pasteurised, not homogenised, to eliminate bugs and it is sold in vending machines in Tauranga and Mount Maunganui, speciality stores and supermarkets in the Waikato, Auckland, Wellington and Tauranga areas as well as five farmer’s markets.

“Farmer’s markets are good because it means we can build up strong relationships and have the urban/rural discussions with people concerning animal welfare and the environment,” said John. Jersey Girl milk is audited to strict organic standards

specifications. Our milk isn’t clarified, separated or homogenised. We don’t remove the protein, therefore it is in the same composition from when it came direct from the cow. That means it tastes better and is more nutritious because of the higher protein level and energy content.

“In a world where so many want to rush, minimise or lie, we believe in patience, generosity, honesty and doing all that is needed to let nature work her magic.”

Michael milks around 250 cows and it is still the pedigree stud that was originally started by John’s great grandfather.

“We recently had the herd DNA profiled for A2 beta casein. Some people who cannot drink A1 milk, because they have inflammatory reaction can drink this as they can tolerate A2. “Organic farmers do have to be a lot more proactive in

terms of feed supply and animal health because animals that have prohibited remedies like antibiotics have to leave the herd.”

Animal health is based on prevention; keeping cows healthy so that their immune system is not compromised and minimising where possible the causes of disease.

“During the last 15 years we have selected cows that suit our organic system. We mainly use compost fertiliser and make sure that we are maintaining our soil and keep nutrient levels at biological optimum range.

“The vending machine idea came about when Fonterra was giving us a minimal premium for our organic milk.

We thought we could bring in more value by selling it ourselves so we investigated it and decided on straight fresh milk rather than yoghurt or cheese. The demand for our bottled milk has been

Michael works with three staff. Gemma Brice is the herd manager and Roxanne Hansen is the processing manager.

John’s daughter Laura is the business manager and processing assistant.

“The team are doing all the hard work and the business is growing.

“We are a very small company and have a lot of overheads but it has been rewarding and those who know us love the milk.

“We are positive about the future and are looking for more outlets for our milk so we can make it available to people in our local region, and we are thrilled to be named a finalist in the 2017 Outstanding NZ Food Producer Awards.”

Cambridge farmers Charlie and Helen Lea, won six of the ten category awards on their way to being named the supreme winners of the Waikato Ballance Farm Environment Awards recently.

“W

e have lived here since 2004 when we purchased the farm in partnership with Helen’s parents, Richard and Pam Bailey. The property is 225ha (190ha effective) with an amazing outlook to the hills east of Cambridge,” said Charlie. The livestock

operation is closed beef and sheep breeding and finishing, wintering 2,600 stock units with a 60:40 beef to sheep ratio. They also have a plant nursery on site.

been key to a significant production lift on the farm,” said Charlie.

“The choice to crop is a ‘no brainer’ given the per hectare comparisons of 8–9 tonne of dry matter yielded from the old grass and 16 tonne and 12 tonne respectively from swede and forage rape.

“It grows the lambs with less parasite control needed as there are no worm burdens. It is all part of our regrassing programme.

“Our Coopworth sheep have high fertility and are facial eczema-tolerant.

We also have a breeding herd of 130 Hereford cows with bloodlines tracing to the Bailey stud Momona and Clements’ Matapouri stud.

“We winter our cows on swedes and this keeps condition on the stock. In the past five years we have established an on-farm Hereford yearling bull sale each September, which is very successful.”

Charlie began a weed-spraying company just under 20 years ago called Cambrilea.

The judges said the Leas had gone to great lengths to provide consistent incomes for their 12–16 staff, which, along with a great work environment, has resulted in outstanding staff retention.

“There is a real sense of satisfaction in hitting upon an out-of-season match for the spraying, which also ensures a variety of consistent work year round.

There is definitely a feel good factor,” said Charlie.

The business covers the Greater Waikato with some work also in the Bay of Plenty and Central Plateau.

“We use a spot-spraying method, which uses 5–10 per cent a hectare of chemical compared to blanket spraying.

“Our nursery arose out of Cambrilea’s winter planting contracts with Waikato

Regional Council. We wanted to guarantee winter work for our staff so growing the plants and planting them was the solution.”

Clients receive 45,000 plants from the nursery with 5,000 planted annually on Ratanui. They grow 16 native revegetation species, intentionally targeting ‘Trees for Bees’ with more than half of them flowering from June to March.

Helen was a head landscape architect for Hamilton City Council and is committed to environmental education through the Trees for Survival programme at the local school. Her knowledge, experience and passion for natives and planting is crucial to the operation.

She eco sources seeds, and seedlings, from their own native hardwood conifer forest to grow on their farm’s riparian areas.

“We have 25ha of mature pockets of native bush mostly fenced from stock.

So far we have planted 17,000 natives and erected 4.5 kilometres of eight-wire fencing including more than 2.5km of waterways,” said Helen.

“In the past two years we have gone with our daughters, Chelsea, Sophie and Georgia, to each of the farm’s 50 paddocks and planted an oak or plane tree for stock shade. The girls can sit under it when they are our age and know how important all this is.

“Living on farm and looking after the

environment is a passion for us. The girls love it and are enjoying learning about farming and helping me find seeds and seedlings.

“We were pretty humbled and appreciative of the Ballance Farm Environment Awards.”

he men, and other farmers who joined the quest, contributed 1% of their breeding flocks to a central flock run by Rex Alexander for genetic development purposes. The group is

now called Advanced Romney Designer Genetics (ARDG) and Jenny Savannah and her husband Adrian have taken over the role from her father Stuart, as have Rex and Ian’s children on their farms

along with the Steeds and Marchants families, that comprise the rest of the ARDG. “In that first year, the mixed age flock lambed 154% and the following year Rex lost 52% of that flock to facial eczema,” said Jenny.

The first field trials for FE testing were set up in 1979. Animals were tested under a natural challenge and in 1984 the first sporidesmin testing took place on rams. The testing rate started at 0.1mg/kg and the group now tests at the highest level available 0.65mg/kg.

The sheep are dosed with the concentrated facial eczema spore toxin and bled at 21 days to see what the

GGT levels are. This measures liver damage. The programme is provided

“If you have to shear the sheep, you may as well get as much as you can for it.”

Jenny says that although there has been a 26% decrease in sheep in New Zealand since 2005, we still export a similar quantity of lamb, testimony to the improved performance of New Zealand’s flocks.

“We couldn’t have done this without everyone involved, from the scientists, to the companies supporting us. “There are still farmers who don’t have as much FE and think they will be fine, but the predictions are most sheep farms in New Zealand will eventually be affected in some way. “Not many ram breeders have the same FE tolerance that we have. Potentially the only sheep alive in the future could be the FE tolerant.

“We have technology and help that our fathers didn’t have. My dad had more than 1,000 recorded ewes to get the result we now get with 400. “We have equipment such as automatic drafters that capture data, so what took our dads a whole day, can now be done

Support for labelling NZ Pork has welcomed cross party support for the Consumers’ Right to Know (Country of Origin of Food) bill heading to the select committee stage.

NZ Pork say that according to the latest research, it is a true reflection of Kiwi consumers’ attitudes.

NZ Pork, the statutory board that works on behalf of local pig farmers, promotes a high standard of animal welfare and a sustainable future for the local industry, and has been calling for all parties to back the bill.

Initiative celebrates women A drive to promote women living and working in the primary industries in New Zealand and abroad was launched recently.

AgWomen Global celebrates all women who help shape the primary industries, no matter the size of the part they play.

AgWomen is a year-long project celebrating and sharing unique stories from 365 different women, all who have contributed in shaping the primary industries.

At the end of the 365 days a coffee table book will be produced sharing these stories.

Chelsea Millar, founder and CEO of Grass Roots Media NZ, wants to honour women in the rural sector who she believes can often be under-represented.

Should I take Coenzyme Q10?

Part 1 Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance essential for life. While we normally make all the CoQ10 we need, some people because of age, health problems or medications can benefit from taking extra good quality CoQ10.

CoQ10 is essential to make the energy our bodies need. The final stage of making energy needs CoQ10 to shuttle the hydrogen needed to generate energy. If your levels of CoQ10 are low this can be felt as low energy, weak muscles and general fatigue.

CoQ10 is also an exceptional antioxidant protecting cells and fats from free radicals. The most important antioxidant function is to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol as it circulates in the body. This is a critical part in our natural defences against blockages in heart arteries and other blood vessels.

Possibly the most common reason for CoQ10 supplementation is for those using cholesterol lowering (statin) medication. The side effects of statins are so common that they are a diagnosable disease called statin myopathy. The most common side effects are muscle stiffness, pain and weakness. This can also cause general fatigue, which often feels like a lack of motivation.

Until such drugs are available I recommend those on statins supplement with 100–200mg of naturally fermented CoQ10. Adding a good CoQ10 alongside stains will in most cases protect against and often reverse existing statin side effects. My favourite is the well researched and patented US product CoQsol®.

Preparing for floods It is important to create an emergency plan of action in the event of potential flooding due to bad weather.

One of the best forms of preparation is to identify potential hazards on your property in advance. Make sure that your staff know how to turn off electrical power, gas and water supplies.

Have a plan in place for your stock to be in best position possible. If you do not have higher ground, discuss with others farmers if you can share their property.

It has been suggested to leave relevant internal farm gates open for stock to escape rising waters, rather than be locked in flooded paddocks if they cannot get to higher ground.

Ensure hazardous substances such as pesticides are stored securely, and if possible move feed out of reach of floodwaters.

Securing structurally unstable materials like fuel tanks, equipment, trampolines and swings, can help avoid damage to property. Have an arborist trim or remove any trees which may

potentially come down in a storm, particularly those around buildings.

Prepare your buildings by raising electrical components above the projected flood elevation where possible.

Make a list of your farm inventory, include all livestock, crops, machinery and equipment and check your insurance is up to date.

During storms, stay informed and listen to the radio or television for evacuation instructions or situation developments. Check civil defence warnings on social media.

Waikato’s rose town

Te Awamutu is nestled in the heart of the Waikato and is known as The Rose Town of New Zealand because of the elaborate rose garden in the township.

The town services a large rural community and its rich and diverse history has given rise to a unique range of visitor attractions. Many local businesses use ‘Rosetown’ in their name, and the rose symbol is widely used on local signs and billboards.

Te Awamutu means ‘the river’s end’ and is situated on gently undulating land close to the banks of a tributary of the Waipa River. The town supports the agricultural industry, with sheep and beef farming on the outer fringes, and the local dairy factory is an important part of the district.

The Waikato Plains and the promontory of Mount Pirongia are easily visible, and two streams — the Mangapiko Stream and the Mangaohoi Stream — are inside the township. The Mangaohoi ends and becomes the tributary of the Mangapiko near Memorial park.

Te Awamutu was the birthplace of Potatau Te Wherowhero, the first Maori King, and in 1834 the first European missionaries visited the area and set up a missionary settlement in July 1839.

Focussing on developing agricultural skills, they established a flourishing trade school and introduced European crops such as wheat, potatoes and

The extinct Kakepuku and Pirongia volcanoes as well as other volcanoes of the Alexandra Volcanic Group with Maungatautari, another extinct volcanic cone, now the site of New Zealand’s largest ecological restoration project, are also nearby. Te Awamutu Museum

has a number of permanent exhibitions focussing on the history of the town and the surrounding area including an exhibition, Everyone is Here, focussing on the Finn brothers, Tim and Neil, Te Awamutu musicians from the bands Split Enz and later Crowded House.

The museum also has a Collection Corner, which is designed to showcase their latest acquisitions as well as existing objects from the museum collection.

Helping with flood relief The call is out around the central North Island for more grazing and supplementary feed as Federated Farmers and allied agencies help flood-hit farmers get back on their feet.

Since the Rangitaiki River burst the stopbank at Edgecumbe on April 6, and the township and farms around the district were inundated, the Federated Farmers support line 0800 FARMING (0800 327 646) has fielded more than 150 calls.

Most have been about grazing or feed, with requests for help outnumbering offers of help two to one, but other calls have related to pumps, manpower and the like. Bay of Plenty Federated Farmers President Darryl Jensen has estimated

that more than 5,000 animals have been plucked from flooded paddocks in the district and transported to less affected properties.

“As many as 40 portable pumps have been in action sucking the water off paddocks and putting it back behind flood defences as the long process of drying out farmland begins. Sunshine is helping lift moisture, and farmers’ spirits,” he said.

Federated Farmers, the Rural Support Trust, Dairy NZ, the ANZ Bank, Zespri, Young Farmers, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council staff and others have all pitched in.

Mr Jensen said he had been able to devote hours to the emergency response, and now the recovery phase, only because staff on his own farm had stepped up and that would also be true of the other Federated Farmer members

who have helped out neighbours. “The regional council has acknowledged it wouldn’t have been able to get everything done that needed to be done without this kind of combined effort.

“It’s so important now to get grass seed and fertiliser onto the paddocks in preparation for winter. When farmers can see grass germinating rather than an ugly brown mess, the knowledge that feed is growing for their animals is a massive psychological boost.”

The government had declared a medium-scale adverse event for the district and Mr Jensen said farmers were now considering how to best use Task Force Green workers in the recovery effort.

Federated Farmers has also sprung into action in the Hauraki Plains, where dozens of farms have been affected by the Piako River overtopping flood defences.

Waikato president Chris Lewis is urging affected farmers not to hesitate to reach out if they need help, or even just someone to talk to.

“There will be farmers who have been running only on adrenaline and that runs out. Getting your farm back to the way it was can be emotionally draining and if you’re feeling it — reach out.

Soil Matters with Peter Burton When everyone in the farming industry is either hurting, or at least feeling like it might be their turn soon, it’s easy to let rip, and at the moment the dairy industry resembles a barn door and therefore an easy target.

What’s important to remember is that the dairy farming industry is made up of individuals, with families, and they are all affected to a greater or lesser degree by continued criticism.

I don’t know of any farmer that is deliberately and wilfully damaging the environment.

That’s not in the nature of any of those I work with, and they’re all aware that short-term damage leads to bigger problems further down the track.

It’s the dairy industry that’s been largely responsible for this country continuing to enjoy a standard of living the envy of our closest neighbour and many other countries, and yet those of us with some influence have felt the right to find fault. I could argue that the industry has provided plenty of ammunition, and alternative resources have been offered, but that’s missing the point. The farming sector is just a small group in New Zealand,

which by international standards is no more than an extended village. Our greatest resource, outside of climate and productive land, is the ability to solve issues through innovation, and in my view it’s time to pool all available resources.

This may mean swallowing pride and being prepared to share with those we’ve butted heads with.

However the resources are available for the things that require sorting, and collectively, plans with positive outcomes can be hatched.

A politically well-connected client recently acknowledged that the wellcoordinated and concerted campaign, which focussed on the environmental shortcomings of rapid dairy expansion, has started a popularity battle the farming industry will almost certainly lose, and with it the support of many urban folk. A lengthy and polarising debate could do irreparable damage to

our international reputation. Would it not be better to put our heads together, sort the real from the perceived, fix whatever is required and get on with the next stage of development?

Further fencing of waterways will look good and make a difference, but the really big issue that no one currently wants to address is carbon.

Carbon is the filter in the soil, in its stable form it’s also the sponge that holds nutrients and moisture.

Here’s what is really happening. In a recent phone call with a Landcare Research scientist, he stated that all irrigated land in this country ‘without exception’ is losing carbon.

The work by Louis Schipper and his team at Waikato University shows that intensively farmed dairy land in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty has been losing carbon for more than thirty years at the average rate of one tonne of carbon for each hectare annually. It’s

not the fault of individual farmers. The issue lies with the advice they’ve been given by industry leaders, but there is an alternative that looks increasingly promising as more measures are conducted.

Carbon under intensive livestock management can be sequestered, or stored, in the soil reducing atmospheric CO2 concentrations.

With increased storage capacity, soils are more resilient, growing increasingly more feed of higher quality.

We’re prepared to put all the measures compiled during the last 15 years, along with our technology, on the table for those genuinely interested.

While the overall vehicle of the year award is a coveted prize in the realm of automotive manufacturing, the engineers behind the scenes hold their breath for another yearly accolade — the prestigious Engine of the Year competition.

Covering everything from fire-breathing V8s to frugal sub-1,000cc power plants, this is a closely contested fight between the big names in motoring.

Continental contender steps up

Still sizzling hot from winning European Car of the Year 2017, the new Peugeot 3008 is a bold new direction from the French automaker. The sense of fun and edge-of-the-curve engineering which grabbed the world’s attention back in the days of the 205 is back, and it comes with — of all things — an electric scooter in the boot.

Simon Rose, Divisional Manager of Peugeot New Zealand said: “The arrival of the New 3008 SUV is the first of multiple SUVs due to launch in 2017 and will mark a significant turning point for Peugeot in New Zealand, allowing us to actively compete in what is now the largest segment of the Kiwi market.”

He goes on to say that “whilst the new 3008 SUV carries the same 3008 model name as its predecessor, it is an entirely different new vehicle from the ground up.”

That’s somewhat of an understatement. Peugeot has indeed revitalised the 3008 badge and rebuilt its new car from the rubber to the roofline, nixing the controversial styling of earlier models in favour of some seriously sharp lines and a more aggressive, road-dominating look.

Inside it’s all futuristic tech cleverly controlled, including a heads up display like that on a fighter jet — or a Chevrolet Corvette.

That doesn’t mean that this is a flat-

out bruiser in a straight line — this small crossover compact comes into a new but extremely popular section of the market with options for a variety of engines, but with intelligent, lowemission and low running cost diesel to the fore.

Peugeot has always done diesel well, and this is no exception. But to win the big Euro award took more than this — and more than the cleverly deployed electric scooter which lurks in the boot to carve up the city commute.

The real party piece of this French firecracker is its ability to offer the space and sense of safety which comes from a modern sports utility, alongside handling ripped direct from the good old Peugeot hot hatch playbook.

Remember the 306 GTi 6, the 205 T16 and the more recent 208 GTi? How about a crossover with that spicy DNA in the mix? It was enough to wow the judges, and now it’s here, proving that you can get a whole lot more by adding an extra zero.

New rules for hunting season

The Wellington Fish & Game region is now one of six adopting new loading rules as a measure for ‘sound’ conservation and sporting reasons.

The new game bird hunting season gets underway on Saturday, May 6, and a three-shot rule now requires hunters to plug their shotgun magazines so that the gun holds no more than three shots in total.

Other regions introducing restrictions on the number of shots are Eastern, Hawke’s Bay and West Coast, while Wellington and Nelson Marlborough are banning magazine extensions.

Fish & Game communications manager Don Rood says the three-shot rule is simply another tool to help reduce pressure on game bird populations and provide more opportunity for other hunters.

“We have to strike a balance between providing hunters enough ducks every season, while conserving populations for following seasons. We strive to achieve this with appropriate bag limits and season lengths,” he said. “The three-shot rule is another tool to help sustainability — that will help limit the number of ducks being harvested.” Mr Rood says that decades ago, when

semi-automatics first came on the market, they were restricted to a twoshot capacity.

“But these days, it’s possible to have shotguns with a capacity of eight-plus shots, so that six hunters on a pond could conceivably be firing up to 54 shots at a time.

“The three-shot rule means hunters know their shots are limited — which we believe makes them think more carefully about shot placement.

“The rule makes game bird hunting more sporting as it reduces any temptation to continue firing as game birds are moving out of range — which reduces the chances of wounding a bird.

“We have had positive feedback from hunters to say that ‘sky busting’ (taking too many shots at too long a range) is less prevalent.”

He adds that Fish & Game is pleased to see the three-shot rule applied more widely “as we look to healthier game bird populations in regions such as Eastern, where the mallard population is on the way up.”

Fish & Game rangers will take a firm line where the rule is concerned this season because compliance is “pretty easy and inexpensive to achieve.”

The three-shot rule says that a shotgun magazine must not hold more than two rounds of any size, plus one more in the breech — three in all. The rule applies for all waterfowl including

pukekos. Firearm safety rules should always be followed and a cartridge should not be put in the chamber until a shot is about to be taken. We advise hunters to study the game bird regulations booklet so they are very clear about whether the regulations apply in the regions they’ll be hunting in, Mr Rood says.
