A council officer samples a nearby waterway to see whether it had been contaminated

Te Kowhai dairy farmer, Edward Smith, was convicted and fined $35,625 in the Hamilton District Court on April 10.

The contamination was identified during a routine inspection by Waikato Regional Council in March 2017, as part of its compliance monitoring programme.

The prosecution against Mr Smith, brought by the council, related to an overflowing effluent holding pond and a blocked effluent drainage pipe, each resulting in overland flows of dairy effluent.

In sentencing Mr Smith, Judge Melanie Harland commented on the inadequacies of the effluent infrastructure on his farm, saying it was ‘barely adequate’ and concluding that

the management of the system was ‘woefully inadequate’.

The council’s investigations manager, Patrick Lynch, agreed with the judge that ‘investment in the effluent infrastructure, and the management of it, needs to be afforded a very high priority’.

“The judge’s comments reinforce the message that both the council and the industry itself have been promoting for years,” said Mr Lynch.

“It is very disappointing to find that some farms continue to operate with inadequate storage.

“This fine is yet another clear message from the court that people who do not take their environmental responsibilities seriously will be heavily penalised.”

Dairy cows are responsible for about a quarter of New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Protect our valuable soils

Love Is A Blending Of Two!

The need to protect New Zealand’s best soils for growing healthy fresh fruit and vegetables is clear in the recently released Our land 2018 report.

“This report highlights the expansion in urban areas, a 10 per cent increase between 1996 and 2012, and the accompanying loss of some of our most versatile land,” says Horticulture New Zealand chief executive, Mike Chapman.

“We have been talking to government about this issue in Pukekohe, near Auckland, as well as other prime growing areas for fruit and vegetables. Some of this soil is unique, particularly the volcanic soils around Pukekohe where vegetables can be grown all year in a frost free environment. This area feeds a lot of New Zealand.

“We believe the valuable growing soils — which are often termed elite soils — should be protected by central government policy. We can’t afford to keep losing these soils if we want to continue feeding New Zealand their favourite fruits and vegetables.

“We couldn’t agree more with this statement in the report: ‘Land is fundamental to human life, and central to the environmental system we depend on. The decisions we make and the actions we take affect not just the land, but also water, oceans, air and atmosphere, and the life they support.’

“Many horticulture businesses are run by intergenerational families who

are natural custodians of the land. They have a vested interest in ensuring they have a business to pass on to their children and grandchildren, just as it was handed on to them.

“We acknowledge that the report cites some instances where horticulture is outside the soil quality indicators they used, but would also like to point out a lot of work is underway to mitigate soil erosion and run-off.

“Many growers spend large sums of money on long-term riparian planting plans to protect waterways on their properties and enhance the environment.

“There is also a Sustainable Farming Fund project underway called Don’t Muddy the Water, focussed on keeping soil on the land where it belongs and out of the waterways. Started three years ago, this project quantifies the relative effectiveness of the best management practices for reducing sediment and phosphorus loss.

“Results so far have shown the effectiveness of silt traps that capture sediment so it cannot run off the land. Preliminary results also show the cumulative discharge of sediment is lower on cultivated production land protected with silt traps compared to construction sites. The project is

Huirimu Farms is a family-owned and operated mixed farming operation that the Sherriff family are ensuring is environmentally sustainable.

R

obbie and Shannan, along with Robbie’s parents Alistair and Judy, converted part of the 850 hectare beef and sheep property to include dairy when they purchased the neighbouring block in 2007.

“Mum and dad had been dairy farming and moved here in 2002, to go back to farming dry stock. My brother Mathew was home as well and when I returned, we purchased the neighbouring property,” says Robbie.

The family converted 300ha to milk 900 dairy cows, and more than 100ha has been fenced and covenanted under the four separate QEII trusts.

“It is steep country with natural pockets of native bush and needs to be preserved for future generations. We have an additional 280ha lease block, which is used for fattening beef cattle.

We also farm 900 ewes and trade lambs as a season permits.”

A new herd home was recently built for the cows to shelter them from extreme weather conditions.

“The herd home had to be financially viable and help reduce our environmental impact. Wintering was incredibly hard, so we looked at feed pads, but settled on the herd home with the effluent stored underneath in a bunker. reliance on the existing effluent system, and the clear plastic roof helps break down the bacteria. We no longer need to grow winter crops.

“It has reduced our nitrogen leaching by 38 per cent. I believe housing will become more widespread to take the next step to nitrogen leaching.”

45ha of maize silage and 200 tonnes of grass silage is grown, which goes back to dairy cows and heifers.

“We spring calve and rear 400 calves — 200 heifer replacements and 200 beef calves.

“The herd is Friesian cross and we use Hereford bulls and are trialling Angus bulls, with the intention of raising more bull calves.

“During the recent dairy downturn, we were fortunate to be able to capitalise on our sheep and beef operation, but realised that there were savings to be made with greater efficiencies such as supplement utilisation. Using the herd

home, we are able to winter more cows on the dairy platform, which allows us to raise more beef calves, thereby sending fewer four-day-old calves away.”

Previous wet winters made the paddocks extremely muddy and slippery, making it difficult to feed the cows.

“Last winter we pugged 60ha, and this year we avoided damaging the paddocks as we utilised the herd home during wet periods. This summer the cows have been fed in the herd home for a couple of hours each day and have therefore had shelter, which reduced their heat stress,” says Robbie.

“We like to have plenty of supplements on hand to minimise the effects of the changing weather patterns. We use chicory for cows and the lambs have raphno (a variety of rape), which is grazed by the heifers once the lambs are finished.”

We consider that with the sheep more spread out, they lamb better on their own. Our dairy shed is efficient for water, with the concrete being washed with green waste water saving 30,000 litres a day. We installed that a few years ago and — we use approximately 40 litres per cow a day for milking. The cows can drink up to 110 litres per day — water is something that we are going to focus more on for the future.”

The Sherriff family like to be proactive rather than reactive. Alistair and Judy

have been fencing off streams and planting trees since the 1970s.

“We decided to return unusable areas back to native. Our whole business must be environmentally and financially stable. We drive older cars and the boat is 20 years old. We invest into the farm and have put a lot of technology in for the staff.

“My sister and my aunt Rose are shareholders. Rose is environmentally aware and is constantly keeping an eye on us, making sure we are doing the right thing. We all want to ensure that Huirimu Farms is sustainable and cared for, for future generations.”

Amanda Burton grew up on a dairy farm in Galatea near the Urewera Ranges and riding horses is amongst her favourite things to do.

“M

y parents star ted sharemilking and managed to buy a property; and we had 160 cows with a 14 aside milking shed,” says Amanda.

Sheep and beef had been her dad’s dream and they eventually sold the dairy farm and purchased a dry stock property near Ratahi. They are retired now, and live overlooking Lake Rotorua.

“After leaving school, I spent seven years riding trackwork in Australia and returned home, and worked for

the late Ken Brown and his wife Ann until I got run over by a young colt and needed knee surgery and had to give up track riding.

“I moved to Taupo and worked at Taupo Horse Treks; and that was the first time I came across standardbreds.

I discovered their awesome nature and quietness and how they could put up with tourists that had never ridden — they are a wonderful horse. I also worked in Manawatu on a 1,600 cow dairy farm with an 80 bail rotary.

Amanda Burton likes the positive, quiet nature of standardbred horses “I love horses, it is in my blood, but in 1997, I was hit by a car whilst riding my motorbike and had to relearn to walk and have plates in my arm and pelvis, so I need a safe horse now.

“My family are non-horse people — dad really dislikes them, but my grandad was a mounted riflemen in the second world war and trained horses for their duties at war.

“When I was seven years old, I wanted a pony but most dairy farmers believe horses eat too much grass, this is not true — most need little grass but do need hay so I broke in my pet calf so I could ride it.

“We attended the local show and I jumped on my calf and showed those in the pony ring my calf riding ability. They bet I couldn’t jump with it, so I thought ‘we’ll show you’ and away we went.” Amanda’s parents got told by the locals ‘get the girl a pony or you’ll never keep that calf behind a fence’.

“A few weeks later I got a pony, started pony club and have had many top show horses, but my most successful one is my little Standardbred ‘Change of Pace’ — why a Standardbred?

They are quiet natured, easy on feed and hardy.

“A Standardbred that has already been under saddle is a great horse to get. They are generally quiet, hardy and easy on feed compared to a thoroughbred. They keep their condition well and have good hard hooves — they don’t really need shoes — they are an amazing animal for people new to horses. They are great for farm and bush work, trekking, and with the right training are good show horses.

“If you are looking to buy a horse, get an advanced rider to check it out for you and ask if a vet could come and drug test at the time, as medication can mask issues such as lameness — genuine people will welcome a vet check.”

Amanda says not to give a Standardbred much dairy farm type grass, but feed them extra hay.

“They should have a nice body weight without seeing ribs or hips — unlike a cow that you can see the hip bones.

“They gain weight on rich grass and this

Amanda encourages new horse riders to attend a pony club and gain riding practise with experienced people can lead to laminitis, which is crippling.

Regular care of their hooves, worming and parasite control is important. If the horse is kept alone take fresh manure into the vet for an egg count test and worming programme. Cross grazing with cows and sheep will help and keep your pasture better.

“New riders should go to pony club and get practise with someone experienced. It is important to wear a proper fitting ‘safety approved’ helmet — not the cute velvet caps that are selling cheap. A helmet can save you from a major head injury and even the most experienced horse can get a fright and freak out.

“Investing well could turn into a career — show jumping, dressage and

eventing, or riding for others. There is a lot of good opportunities overseas such as Europe and you could end up as a groom for top riders.

“A Standardbred is a good place to start and are cheap to buy — you can pick up one that has had a lot of time under saddle for up to $1,000.”

O

riginally Cheryl started out with an idea to keep the sheep that originated in Denmark from extinction, whilst keeping the family farm operating profitably. That idea grew into a family business that begins out in the paddock and ends in highend fashion stores and on blockbuster cinema screens.

“We are proud of things that are 100 per cent from New Zealand and have been doing it for 30 years now,” says Cheryl.

The farm is medium to steep hill country with lots of retired bush on the east

coast — six kilometres from the ocean.

Stansborough has a team of 10 staff at the mill based in Wellington, plus others on the farm when necessary, and the shearing gangs.

“It’s a dedicated team effort — on the station we run low stock numbers and also are involved in honey production, subtropicals and are considering ecotourism for diversification.

“I discovered the small flock of rare grey sheep in Nelson, which had been brought to New Zealand from Sweden 20 years prior. The elegant, fine-boned breed were traditionally farmed for their pelts and not particularly sought after in the pragmatic south for their wool.

“The flock of sheep are now called ‘Stansborough Grey’ and in early 1990 they were dumped due to the share market crash, and when I found them

I brought a core of 400 sheep plus all the embryos and semen that were with them.

“I found embryologist Trevor Cook from Feilding, who had worked with them when first brought out to New Zealand.

He has been with us all the way through, as we have strengthened the breed.

“We have a ‘closed’ flock and our embryos and semen ‘Stansborough Grey’ is registered with the New Zealand Sheep Breeders Association. We don’t sell our genetics and don’t buy any in, as our breed is specific to the wool type we need.”

The sheep historically originate from an island off the coast of Sweden — their unique grey fleeces were perhaps adapted to keep out the keen north wind, which scours this cold land. The wool was utilised by the Vikings for making the sails for their medieval longships.

“Barry and I developed, and strengthened the traits that led to the finer, soft and lustrous ‘Stansborough Grey’ fleeces we have today,” says Cheryl.

Maunga sanctuary grant

New Zealand’s largest mainland sanctuary for native wildlife has been granted $1.4 million over four years by Waikato Regional Council.

The money – from the council’s Natural Heritage Fund – will be used by the Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust to maintain its 47km predator-proof fence, and carry out pest surveillance and pest incursion responses. It will also fund the trust’s ecological restoration programmes, including an update of its restoration plan.

The decision was made at a finance committee meeting, with a vote 5-1 in favour of the grant, which will be paid in annual instalments of $350,000 from 2018/19.

Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari manager, Melissa Sinton, told the committee a science and technical advisory panel had been recently

established to underpin decisions made by the trust around management of the flora and fauna inside the sanctuary.

“The trust’s key achievements to date, included the reintroduction of 13 threatened species, such as the western North Island brown kiwi, takahe, tuatara, kokako and giant weta,” she said.

“This had been achieved through the successful eradication of all introduced pest mammals. The exception was mice, which remain on the main mountain, but are no longer present in the northern and southern enclosures, some QEII blocks within the fence and the Tautari wetland enclosure.”

In moving the motion to support awarding of the grant, councillor Stu Kneebone, said the benefits of the project were being experienced beyond the maunga.

“The biodiversity benefits have been spilling over into surrounding areas

in the Waipa district and inspiring other pest programmes, like Predator Free Cambridge, which is currently experiencing big demand from locals for rat traps.”

Finance committee chair, Jane Hennebry, praised the trust for its success and recognised it as a project of international ecological significance, however, she said it was disappointing to see that funding from the Department of Conservation had dropped for such a nationally significant treasure.

“I believe this means the regional council and Waipa District Council have become a crutch for funding and therefore I cannot support the grant.”

Bobby calf deaths down The number of bobby calves that die between the farm gate and the works is now down to six calves for every 10,000.

“That is a victory for our animal welfare regulations,” says the Associate Minister of Agriculture responsible for Animal Welfare, Meka Whaitiri.

“This improvement is great to see and represents a lot of hard work done by MPI and the industry to improve the welfare of bobby calves.

“In 2008, the mortality rate was a depressing 68 calves per 10,000 and that prompted changes in the industry that saw that rate start to fall. The regulations that were introduced in 2016, have seen the deaths continue to drop every year.

“Improvements in the mortality rates show that these regulations, alongside the industry’s own initiatives have made a real difference. The welfare of calves is a collective responsibility, so it’s important that we keep up the good Meka Whaitiri, Associate Minister of Agriculture work to make sure calves are responsible for Animal Welfare treated humanely.”

Understanding osteoarthritis

My recent seminars included detailed discussion on osteoarthritis (OA) and the many things we can do to help. My introductory point was: that it is important to see osteoarthritis as a true disease process, rather than just wear and tear.

An excellent research paper (Yudoh et.al, Arthritis Research Therapy 2005) took a detailed look at the processes that cause OA. In particular, they studied the chondrocyte cells that maintain and repair cartilage.

What they found was that chondrocytes are very susceptible to damage by free radicals.

While free radical production is a completely normal part of our energy metabolism if these are unchecked by antioxidants, cells can become damaged and eventually die.

The researchers found that over time, free radicals damage chondrocytes to the point that they die. Once this happens, the tiny patch of cartilage it maintained will break down. Eventually this leads to loss of cartilage and subsequent narrowing of the spaces between bones.

More recent research confirmed that accidental damage to joints, triggers the same destructive process.

chondrocytes leading to cartilage loss. Mature chondrocytes have limited ability to reproduce.

This is why death of chondrocytes is central to cartilage loss in arthritis.

Any successful treatment must address the real cause, which is adding the antioxidants that can neutralise the free radicals that damage joints.

One of my clients had diagnosed OA in his spine, but unfortunately could no longer tolerate antiinflammatory medication. I firstly put him on my multimineral/multiantioxidant and double doses of my high chondroitin joint formula.

Within three months the back pain had largely gone and was much more comfortable.

A big part of keeping a house warm is deciding what kind of heating is suitable. If you want to heat a large room, an energyefficient fixed heater might be a good option or, if possible, a fireplace. Autumn brings cooler nights as a reminder of the approaching winter months, providing an opportunity to address home comforts until spring appears.

At this time of year, many people look forward to the change in seasons as relief from the hot summer sun, and the joys of indoor living once again. They enjoy the comfort of merino jumpers and homespun jerseys, warm socks and ugg boots, and replacing cotton sheets on the beds with cosy flannelette. There are many options available for buying items like these, some very reasonably priced, if you’re needing to replace or replenish this year.

For others, the joys come from spending time in the kitchen providing their family with comfort foods. WINTER FOCUS Preparing pastures for winter Winter in New Zealand can be a difficult time for farmers. After all, we aren’t called the Land of the Long White Cloud for nothing.

This wet weather means there is an increased risk of pugging and damage to pastures, which can minimise farm profitability by reducing pasture yield of up to 80 per cent for as many as eight months.

This affects cows’ body and condition and possibly — a cow’s ability to breed.

Building pasture cover before the wet period, means the chance of pasture damage is less likely. Farmers can assess paddocks, which are most likely vulnerable to wet conditions in early autumn and graze them first.

Another simple, but effective way to decrease pugging is to take cows in and out of different gates to spread the weight.

Grazing from the back of the paddock can also minimise damage to the

paddock, as the land is less trampled.

Adopting an on/off grazing strategy is the most effective way of minimising pugging damage. This means the time, which stock are on pasture or crops, is much shorter. The rest of the time they can be kept in a well-designed and managed stand-off area.

A cow can consume their daily intake in 6–8 hours so once this is complete, they can be transferred to a stand-off area to avoid unnecessary damage. This space should have enough area for them to lie down and be free from stones to avoid lameness.

A sacrifice paddock is one way to manage cows and pasture when there are no purpose-built stand-off facilities, or where off-farm grazing is not an option. They can also be used as a

paddock when it is dry in autumn. By feeding supplements on a sacrifice

Repairs and maintenance

Winter days are short, they can be wet and cold and you might rather be inside rather than out, so the more maintenance that can be done now, the easier life will seem later.

The cooler autumn temperatures provide the opportunity to catch up on that list of ‘round-to-it’ jobs that have been left because it was too hot to do them, or you were too busy, or just didn’t feel like it!

In areas of heavy rainfall over winter, get out the mower or weed-eater along ditches and drains to ensure free-flowing water, so no damming up or flooding occurs later. Clearing culverts of any broken branches or other accumulated deadfall while the creeks are low, is a lot easier than trying to do so, when they are full of water!

Autumn planting along waterways or hillsides prone to erosion, is another productive way to spend some time now. Forward planning in this area, is a worthwhile exercise to decide which plants and trees will be best suited for your purpose.

Various programmes and grants are available from some regional councils for landowners choosing to and needing to be environmentally aware.

Household firewood will be required if your home has a fireplace, and

this is a good way to clear broken branches or fallen trees, or even trees that may not withstand the rigours of winter storms. Keeping trees and treelines tidy should prevent them potentially falling on top of fences or power lines later, and if you don’t need the firewood yourself, someone will.

A little maintenance in the yard may also be necessary to save angst on a cold rainy day. Ensuring all your feeding out equipment is in good repair, a quick service and oil changes done, even fixing that gate that doesn’t swing properly will save your dog from an entertaining run of expletives, as you stumble and slide in the mud later!

If you use temporary electric fencing during winter check you have enough reels, plenty of standards, and that any battery-run units are charged.

The maintenance list isn’t too long, doesn’t take too much effort, especially if you’re lucky enough to have family members to help out with some chores like firewood for example, and how satisfying it will be to run through a smooth winter!

Maintenance is easier done on fine days now rather than when conditions deteriorate

Effluent management specialists Investing in a concrete Prosump effluent storage facility is about ‘doing it once and doing it right’ say its manufacturers, Presco Environmental Infrastructure.

Presco specialise in sustainable effluent management systems, and the Prosump is their flagship product.

“Every Prosump is individually designed and built to suit each particular farm,” says Oliver Prestidge, one of Presco’s FDE Specialists. “We go out onfarm and meet with the farmers to discuss their current operations and their dreams for the future, which is at the forefront of our minds during the planning process.”

Presco can advise the farmer the best way to deal with effluent, and alongside the Prosump, they also supply other supporting effluent infrastructure including: sand traps, transfer sumps, solids storage bunkers and weeping wall systems.

Presco’s Prosumps are manufactured using 150mm thick, 40MPA, triplereinforced concrete for extra strength and to withstand the corrosion of the effluent.

the lay of the land and site conditions.

“Prosumps have the lowest ‘throughlife’ cost of any effluent storage option currently on the market” says Oliver, “and they come with a 50-year minimum build-life guarantee”.

The ponds are not only built for longterm durability, however, they also provide many short-term cost savings and benefits including ease of use. The floor of the Prosump is dished, which along with the up to 3.6m high vertical walls, hugely decreases the rain catchment area and footprint on the land, and

also contributes to less solids build-up making stirring more efficient. Prosumps are designed for New Zealand’s rough weather conditions, including withstanding earthquakes and ground movement. Each pond is designed by a certified engineer. (Even empty, a Prosump is safe in adverse conditions!)

Prosumps do not rely on a liner, waterproofing is in the concrete, and the unique three-stage sealing process.

Waikato Dairy Industry Award winners The major winners in the 2018 Waikato Dairy Industry Awards are first-time entrants who saw an opportunity to obtain an independent assessment of their business and to identify areas to improve.

Steve Gillies and Amy Johnson, won the region’s Share Farmer of the Year competition.

Steve and Amy are contract milking 470 cows for Peter and Marian van der Heyden at Putaruru. Steve has been in the industry eight years, and was working as a mechanic before moving to New Zealand from Scotland in 2010, and making the career change.

Amy grew up on a farm and holds a bachelor of applied science, majoring in agriculture. She worked as a DairyNZ consulting officer and is now an agrimanager with ANZ, as well as working with Steve on the farm.

Te Awamutu 50-50 sharemilkers, Will and Kirsten Rolton, were runnersup. They work on Kees and Hannie Rombout’s 85.5ha, 274-cow farm. Prior to immigrating to New Zealand in 2010, Will managed dairy and arable in the UK. Clint Gulliver and Jess Howie, placed third: the couple are contract milkers on Aad and Jill De Groot’s 65ha Ngarua farm, milking 214 cows.

The 2018 Waikato Dairy Manager of the Year winner, Chelsea Smith, was previously a ‘travelling winemaker’ before returning to the family farm and decided to enter the dairy industry fulltime in 2015.

Chelsea is currently farm manager for Steven and Amy Van Der Poel’s 250ha farm, milking 1,180 cows in Otorohanga.

Matamata farm manager, Shane White, came second. Shane entered the dairy industry straight from school and has worked his way up through the industry. Morrinsville farm manager

Ngawharau Apaapa placed third. Nga works on Bruce and Donna Arnold’s 200ha Tatuanui farm, milking 765 cows and placed second in the Dairy Manager category in 2014.

The 2018 Waikato Dairy Trainee of the Year, Aaron Courage, is also training to be an AB technician. Aaron is Farm Assistant for Stewart and Kathryn Anderson on their 146ha, 430-cow property at Otorohanga.

Runner-up was assistant manager, Connah Hunter. Connah works for 2015 Waikato Farm Manager of the Year winners, Paul and Kate Manion, on Jonathan Robinson’s 143ha, 550-cow Cambridge property.

Third place went to 2IC Joseph Aspin.

He works on the NZSF Waikato Farms Ltd 124ha farm.

Everybody is in the SUV business these days — from Bentley’s massive, country house proportioned Bentaygo, with its emphasis on luxury, to Lamborghini’s Urus, which promises velocity. The dizzying array of choices has spawned another subspecies, which is definitely worth a look — the stylish, yet still determinedly practical upmarket off-roader.

These are examples by companies, who approach the sports utility concept from its roots. In fact, both of the top examples in this field come from marques, which began in the mud and thunder of warfare — Jeep and Range Rover. Tracing their history back

Brexit representative in London

Beef + Lamb New Zealand and the Meat Industry Association have appointed Jeff Grant to support the red meat sector’s response to Brexit.

Mr Grant will be based in London, and will work closely with B+LNZ’s Europe representative, the New Zealand Government and commercial interests to help strengthen the red meat sector’s ties with the United Kingdom and safeguard New Zealand’s exports to the key market.

“Jeff is highly experienced and has been involved in the red meat sector for more than 25 years, so brings with him expertise and strategic skills that will be crucial over the next two years in dealing with the implications of Brexit,” says Beef + Lamb New Zealand chairman, Andrew Morrison.

“As a sheep, beef and deer farmer himself with properties at Balfour and Otama Valley in Southland, Jeff understands the importance of trade to the sector.”

B+LNZ and MIA, with financial support from AGMARDT, will jointly fund the additional resource.

Meat Industry Association chairman, John Loughlin, says Brexit is one of the biggest challenges to face the sector in recent years and it is crucial New Zealand is no worse off as a result of the change.

“Jeff will play a crucial role in the overall NZ Inc effort to build and maintain our relationships in the UK, secure our national interests and dispel the misconceptions about our sector and exports.”

Mr Grant has had a number of different roles over the years, including being elected as a Member of Parliament in 1987, where he served two terms, including the role of Senior Whip, in the National Government from 1990 until 1993, when he retired.

Since 1994, he has been predominantly involved as a director or

trustee of organisations and companies including Landcorp, Wrightson, and Beef + Lamb New Zealand.

He has also been chairman of ten organisations including Meat and Wool NZ, the New Zealand Meat Board, the Meat Research and Development Council, AGMARDT, Invest South and Wool Partners Co-op.

Most recently he has been chairman of AgResearch, Mount Linton Station, OSPRI, Milford Sound Tourism, Southland Shared Services and a Director of SBS Bank, Finance Now Ltd, NZ Young Farmers, and Predator Free 2050 Ltd. He will be active in the role from around mid-year and will work closely with Beef + Lamb New Zealand regional manager, Ben O’Brien, who is based in Brussels.
