There is optimism — a sense that things are coming right. There is hope. There’s a good reason to feel hopeful. Even with challenges overseas and tough tariffs, our rural sector is holding strong. Prices are up, Fieldays was bustling, and farming is still the engine room of New Zealand. That buzz comes from something deeper. It is not new — it is you, the people who make these communities strong. Rural New Zealand is at the heart of who we are and keeps our economy ticking. Farming, horticulture, forestry, fishing, tourism and food production all depend on the land and the people who work it. So much of what we eat, export and celebrate starts right here. One of rural life’s greatest strengths is the way people look out for each other. In small towns and on farms, neighbours know when someone needs a hand. Schools, sports clubs, fire brigades, marae, churches, halls, markets and agricultural events bring us together. Out here, you are not just another face. You are part of the family. Rural life also keeps us close to the land. We notice the seasons: spring

lambs, summer haymaking, misty winter mornings, and autumn colours. Rivers, hills, coastlines, dark skies, birds and wide-open views are part of daily life and good for the soul. For us, life isn’t always easy. Getting to a doctor, catching a bus, finding a school, or even getting decent internet can be a challenge. Still, for most of us, the good far outweighs the tough bits: open spaces, strong friendships, hard work and pride in where we live. There’s still work to do. Rural communities need good roads, reliable internet, practical health services, and policies that understand distance, weather, and what it really takes to run a business on the land. When decisionmakers listen to the people who live here, rural New Zealand doesn’t just get by — it leads. So yes, the heartland really is humming. It’s humming with resilience, opportunity and people who believe in their place and their future. If we keep backing them, that buzz will only get stronger — for our regions, our economy, and for all of New Zealand. Can you hear it?

Beef + Lamb cautiously optimistic

Further details of the coalition government’s Freshwater Farm Plans system were revealed in late August, and while they stop short of providing exemptions for low-risk farms, industry advocate Beef + Lamb New Zealand has expressed tentative optimism for a pragmatic approach. Beef + Lamb NZ reports the intent is for FWFPs to replace the old system of rules and consents, which was muchderided as a level of baffling ‘red tape’ within the industry. However, the group notes that most sheep and beef farmers don’t need consent to farm, so they have been working hard to ensure the farm plan requirements clearly differentiate between levels of risk. Feedback from farmers supports the adage used in their recent communique to farmers: ‘tailored approaches will always be better than costly blunt national and regional rules.’ “Beef + Lamb NZ had been pushing for an exemption for low-risk extensive farms as we believe the administrative burden for these properties to complete a Freshwater Farm Plan wasn’t proportionate with the low risk they pose,” said B+LNZ chair Kate Acland. “Although we were unsuccessful in achieving the exemption, the framework proposed by the government, especially around certification and auditing expectations, is much better than it was.” The detail of the emerging FWFP scheme, which pleased the red sector advocates most, was news that certified and audited farm plans will now only apply to farmers undertaking specific high-risk activities.
regime will interlock with the other aspects of the replacement to the Resource Management Act in a wider context. “While today’s announcement is a positive step forward, we still need to further analyse details which will be clearer once the government releases its National Direction and National Standards — those are where the rubber hits the road,” Acland said.
Find your community today These include large amounts of winter grazing or extensive irrigation. Certification is now granular, as well — only the part of the farm where high-risk activities take place will require cert. That’s important, because in the majority of cases sheep and beef farms would only use a small portion of their available land for such activities. At the same time, unnecessary complex mapping requirements have also been removed. “All farms that meet the threshold will still need to prepare and hold a farm plan, and declare it to their council, but they will not need it certified or audited if

they fit into the lower-risk category,” said Agriculture Minister Todd McClay. “Most sheep and beef farmers will still need to have a plan for how they manage risks to freshwater, but it will not automatically need to be certified or audited under the changes announced — reducing unnecessary and unreasonable compliance costs. These plans should be able to be completed by farmers themselves,” said Ms Acland. There’s more to come, with details emerging about how the government will create an equivalency pathway for industrybased freshwater plans, and how the FWFP

TAKING THE HIGHWAY TO
FARM OWNERSHIP
A goal of farm ownership is driving Hayden and Anna Tristram forwards as they hit the road with their two young daughters next month, picking up farmingrelated work as they travel around New Zealand.
A
lready, the pair have jobs lined up through to March 2027, starting with farm-sitting in Dannevirke, followed by work in the Coromandel and Waikato, before they head to the South Island. A 9.5-metre Jayco caravan, shipped from Australia to Auckland, will become a full-time home on wheels for Hayden, Anna, Ariela, 4, and Kiara, 2. In August, the family drove to Auckland in their Ford Ranger towing vehicle, collected the caravan and are making preparations to live in it. Hayden said the girls have already settled in with flying colours.
“The caravan is quite spacious, but laundry with two young kids might be a challenge.” The couple met while serving as medics in the New Zealand Army. “Then about 10 years ago, we decided to go farming, and Anna studied teaching.” Hayden was raised on his parents’ 400ha hill country sheep and beef breeding farm in Hawke’s Bay, while Anna grew up in Wellington. In 2020, the couple began leasing the hill country farm, purchasing 1,500 Romney ewes, 60 Hereford-Friesian breeding cows and 100 R1 bulls. In addition to running the farm, the couple established Floating Peaks, a

woollen gardening gift range using their own ewe wool clip. Anna also taught at Central Hawke’s Bay College in Waipukurau. Although the farm eventually sold, the lease continued until May this year. Meantime, Hayden moved to Manawatū in 2025 to take up a farm management position near Halcombe. Anna and the couple’s daughters remained on the Hawke’s Bay farm to finish up before joining him. “When we moved to Manawatū, Anna started relief teaching at Feilding High School up until the end of term two this year. At the beginning of term three, she started with Agri Futures.” While juggling farm management in different regions over the past 18 months,
Anna, a qualified school teacher, is also on the Agri Futures team connecting students with the food and fibre sector
and raising a young family, Hayden felt they were both burning the candle at both ends.

The couple’s two young daughters are settling in well to life on the road
Hayden and Anna’s long term goal is farm ownership
“We tried looking at buying a house in town, and buying 20ha at Halcombe, but nothing sort of felt right. We needed a way to step back and recharge the batteries before making a significant life decision.” Initially, the couple considered buying a caravan for weekends away. “Then we thought, why don’t we do farm contracting out of it, meet other farmers around the country, hear their stories about what they’ve done, and set a goal to buy our own farm. We are going to find the golden bits of advice and piece it all together.”
Hayden grew up on a sheep and beef breeding farm in Hawke’s Bay
Through this, the couple hopes to also discover which region of New Zealand they would like to buy a farm in, and what type of farm they want to chase. While travelling around in the caravan, and when they aren’t working, Hayden and Anna will make the most of opportunities to show their daughters different areas in New Zealand. “The biggest highlight we are looking forward to is spending time with the kids.” Through using social media accounts named Caravan2Farm, the couple is

lining up jobs and hoping to experience a wide range of agricultural and horticultural work. “As soon as we put our first post on social media for anyone who wants work done, the support was really cool. Putting yourself out there on social media is quite daunting. We are open to trying everything. “The goal is to learn and figure out what sort of farm we would like to chase. Then we can focus our efforts in that area,” said Hayden.

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES
THE WORLD IN A PADDOCK
PART TWO
BY AMY FIFITA
This month, we’re back on the 20-hectare block in the foothills of the Kaimai Ranges, talking to Jules Minkhorst and Mike van der Wal, who share their Kiwi farming lifestyle with overseas travellers through the Workaway programme.
“O
ur two sons currently live in Europe, so the visitors help fill a little of the gap they have left behind. Coming here in search of the Kiwi experience, these young people are smart, fit, adventurous and well-travelled. “They’re looking for authenticity, connection, and to get up close with animals. They want to do physical work outside and love to light a wood fire and gaze into it, and usually want to improve their English.” Through this joining of cultures, Workaway visitors get to experience rural New Zealand, while sharing their cultures and food with their hosts. The effect can be life-changing. “Our helpers and visitors go home as ambassadors for New Zealand as
a place to visit, but also as a producer of the highest quality of grass-fed beef raised humanely. “For some, being here transforms their lives. Noemie worked in venture capital finance in Paris and joined us while we were building our house. On returning to France, she gained a carpentry apprenticeship with a team that restores historic buildings using traditional methods and tools. “There are many horticulture jobs across NZ, but here they get a crash course in farm life during an average two-week stay, which sets them up for farming jobs. “We hand-rear our cattle, so they are friendly and calm and love a scratch. Our ‘workawayers’ get to handle them and gain confidence with big animals, learning

how to move them using body position and a quiet voice. “They learn about the cattle’s nature and how sociable and interesting they are. Most have never patted a big dog, so
they love getting to know Gus, our peopleadoring Huntaway.” Jules says calf rearing is their favourite time of year — a season where work opportunities are abundant.

Nick left his Singapore homeland to experience the Kiwi farm industry and learn about rural ways, like feeding calves
“Last year, Yeo went on from here to a job calf-rearing in Southland and helped train 1,600 one-day-old calves to drink from a feeder. “Miki from Japan has just left us for a beef-and-sheep job with a Wairarapa family. She is assisting with calf-rearing and farm work, and helped the family through the busy winter. “The reforesting projects are a favourite for our volunteers. Depending on the season, they get some experience in propagation, growing plants, and planting. “My former volunteers Cécile and Max are now working in a native tree nursery and planting business in the Waikato. We help them edit CVs and direct them to sources they can use to find work — for example, Facebook farming groups in the different provinces.” As if the world at their farm gate wasn’t expansive enough, the small property is

growing with new ideas coming to fruition to enrich the experience for both host and guest. Just a short venture to Hobbiton, guests enjoy their farm stay and the local attractions. “We’re really enjoying hosting overseas visitors, so we’re about to launch a homestay-farmstay. Mike’s hand-building a sauna-yoga-wellness cabin and I’ll take visitors for farm walks. It’s a long way from an apartment in Singapore or Kyoto to a farm in Southland. “The farming 101 our helpers experience here exposes them to the reality of physically being here doing it and gives them a range of basic skills. This gives the farmers the confidence to employ them, and we put the effort into the ones that have potential. “Mum hosted homestays, mostly young Japanese. That was a really nice way to share our amazing Kiwi life and land,
and it was a lot of fun, so I’m keen to do a similar thing. We’re establishing a paddock-to-plate supply stream for our beef cattle, going direct to the consumer via a micro-abattoir.” While the experience improves the volunteers’ farming knowledge, there are other aspects that help improve everybody’s lives socially and physically. With young, fit and able bodies helping and learning, it gives Jules and Mike’s farming operations some manpower. “Our grown sons both live overseas, so having a stream of young adults in the house, cooking in the kitchen, and sharing food around the dinner table makes our life rich with lively conversation, good company, and the sharing of different cultures and worldviews. “We love to be able to share this amazing land and life in such a practical and authentic way.”

A PIONEER
FOR NASHI PEARS BY AMY FIFITA
For Ian Wallace, what was four hectares of bare land became an opportunity to begin a nashi pear orchard in New Zealand — and after all these years, he remains one of four in Waikato.
I
n his early adult years, Ian had tried his hand at working for local orchards — pruning and growing apples, peaches, plums and other fruit. The son of a beef and sheep farmer, Ian spent time in the South Island and Australia doing various farm jobs, before settling in Matangi, where he established Nashi Pear Farm. “We did the usual thing of rearing calves, lambs and sheep, and then gradually moved onto horticultural tasks. It is a swear word now, but we grew pampas on contract,” said Ian. “In those days, it all went on rail. We grew up to 100,000 plants a year, selling to various farms and nurseries. We also started doing shelter belt trees, hedging and various other things. “In the meantime, I had another block of land we were only using a small part of. It
was too small to grow apples of a marketable size — that was when I spotted nashi.” Through his own research, Ian discovered a group of growers in Waikato, so he joined the ranks and began growing. Nashi pears were new to the country, having begun growing commercially in the early to mid-1980s — Ian joined the grower fraternity. “We had a lot of help from David Klinac from Plant & Food Research in Ruakura and other growers. We had about 13 Waikato growers, and their first crops in NZ were ready in the late 1980s. “Nobody knew what nashi pears were; there was no local market for them, so it was all exported to the US and eventually Indonesia. In the first two to three years, we planted about two hectares of nashi pear trees and picked our first fruit in 1990.

Nashi pears are grown on a V-shaped trellis, making them easy to pick and prune
“Birds were a challenge, so we placed a net over the top of the trees to keep them out. They are not freestanding trees, so we grow
them on a trellis. Trellising made the operation easier for putting the bird net up, picking from the ground or trolley, and pruning.

The start of the venture saw produce exported to the US, before a local market for the unique pear developed in New Zealand
Ian’s wife has both dehydrated nashi pears and bottled them for home use. Ian sold juice for a time using a company out of Te Kauwhata
Ian says growing 35–40 tonnes a hectare of nashi pears is the optimal amount, any more than that and the following year’s harvest is affected
“In Japan, nashi pears were grown on a pergola system, which is like a big, open V. We made the rows five metres apart and planted the trees about three metres apart. They grow up two sides of the trellis. “Trees will last for a number of years. In Japan, there are 100-year-old trees. Our trees are coming up to 40 years. They continue to produce if you prune them correctly. “Thirty-five to 40 tonnes a hectare was the limit, and if you did any more than that, it impacted the crop the following year with less fruit. There are a few issues like fire blight and silver leaf, which can kill the tree. Once you know what you’re doing, it is easy to manage, and because the spray programme is reasonably light, we’ve never had to use fungicide.”
Starting out in a shed with a round table, the packing team graded everything by eye, putting the pears into a pocket pack and tray. “We eventually bought a secondhand mechanical grader, which graded by weight, and gave us more room for people. The big thing we learned very early on was that they marked every time you touched them. We pack them with polystyrene socks to protect the fruit, and have given supermarkets demonstrations and information for handling.” Eventually finding its way on to the local market, the fruit grew in popularity and almost matched export prices. “Niche products are always interesting. As export prices went down, we gradually morphed to local market fruit. We got on to a juice company out of Te Kauwhata,
The Constant Angle Knife Sharpening System
RIES EXPORT SE
which juiced nashi for us to sell, and it came out excellently. It was not too sweet and it had a nice flavour. Dried, juiced, raw, bottled or cooked, nashi is quite nice, too.” When the juice company shut down and the logistical issues of using other juicers proved unfeasible, Ian stopped selling juice. With competition from Asian fruit and a need for more marketing and financial incentives, challenges remain in keeping nashi pears growing in NZ. “At the moment, the 13 growers in the Waikato have dwindled down to four. All of the nashi pear growers are getting older, and there are no new ones taking up the fruit. I have enjoyed doing it, but it is always a challenge to do something a bit different from everybody else.”

Why early legal advice matters on the farm
Farming businesses are built on hard work, land, livestock and relationships — often with intergenerational connections. However, legal problems can quickly become costly and disruptive to both the business and the family home if advice is delayed. The longer you wait, the greater the risk to your farm’s future and livelihood. Examples of where early legal advice is most important are in two key areas: investigation and prosecution from the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and relationship property disputes. If a farmer is contacted by MPI, and is at risk of facing investigation or prosecution, understanding the specific allegations early is critical. Farmers must know their legal obligations around communicating and assisting investigators, as well as where they are protected and where they face liability. Farmers should not assume that a routine MPI inspection or a request for information is insignificant. Failing to get early legal advice — or failing to seek advice when investigated by MPI — can materially affect the outcome through inconsistent or incorrect explanations given to investigators. Those farming can also experience receiving compliance steps which may not be

understood, resulting in missed MPI deadlines. Should the matter be heard in court, farmers could face the chances of unfavourable outcomes: large fines, disqualification from owning stock, and in the worst case, a community or custodial sentence. Farms often combine personal, family and business assets, creating complexity in relationships. Relationship property disputes can see the farm, land, livestock, machinery, companies, trusts, debts, inheritances and contributions made by each partner scrutinised. Early legal advice can aid separating parties to understand their rights. A contracting-out agreement, early into a relationship, is an appropriate way of protecting the ongoing operation of the farm and exploring practical, possible settlement options. It will ensure a fair settlement between separating partners and reduce lengthy, unnecessary conflict. Our legal team understands the unique pressures facing farming families and businesses. Contact Inspire Legal early for practical, confidential advice tailored to your needs on 07 853 2288.

Your body has finely-tuned systems for turning food into usable energy. Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, or blood sugar, which enters the bloodstream. The pancreas then releases insulin, the hormone that helps move glucose from the blood into cells, where it can be used for fuel. Too much blood sugar and cell insulin resistance can become a serious problem. Surplus glucose can attach to proteins and fats in the bloodstream forming harmful compounds causing inflammation and tissue damage. This damage is a real concern in pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes, particularly when it affects blood vessels and nerves. While we can store some blood sugar as glycogen, excess glucose (blood sugar) is converted into triglycerides, a type of fat, and released into the bloodstream to be stored as body fat. This is why weight gain and raised triglyceride levels can be signs of poor blood sugar control. The best way to support healthy blood sugar control is to follow a diet low in sugar and carbohydrates, while focussing on low-starch plant foods, healthy fats, and protein. For more information, contact me for an email copy of my healthy eating guide.
Two supplements can be helpful while making these diet changes: a highquality, water-soluble berberine extract and the mineral chromium polynicotinate. Berberine and chromium both play key roles in blood sugar metabolism. Berberine supports AMPK (AMPactivated protein kinase) often described as the body’s “energy switch”. AMPK helps maintain healthy blood sugar balance by reducing further glucose production and encouraging glucose to move out of the bloodstream and into cells for energy. Chromium supports insulin receptor function, helping cells take up glucose more effectively. Choose a water-soluble berberine extract where possible, as it may improve absorption and reduce the digestive discomfort sometimes associated with standard berberine extracts. Get More from your fertiliser with lime Waikato farmers should book their Avoca lime and fertiliser orders early to get their grass growing to ensure they have sufficient supplementary feed made well before Christmas - in case of the possible drought being touted.
healthy soil biology. Together, these benefits create more productive, resilient, and profitable farming systems.” Furthermore, improved soil structure allows plants to access water and nutrients easier and more efficiently through greater and deeper root growth and plant health and pasture persistence.
The Northland founded company which has been trusted by farmers for decades and turns 80 in 2027, is renowned for providing sound advice to lift farm productivity.
“Combined with lime, Avoca’s full range of fertiliser products and custom blends are what you need to get the right soil nutrients to improve production. For example, stronger clover growth means greater plant nitrogen fixation and an increase natural nitrogen supply,” says Crowson.
Managing Director Bryce Manderson says lime remains the most under-rated and cost-effective tool for improving soil performance and pasture productivity. With fertiliser prices high and the potential for a summer drought, he is urging farmers to secure their spring lime and fertiliser orders now. In fact, by combining lime and fertiliser into dicalcic maximises return on spend by helping convert phosphate into a less soluble form that is less prone to moving through the soil profile. This results in improved phosphate retention and availability where it is needed - which supports greater grass growth. “Many farmers focus on fertiliser inputs, but one of the most cost-effective ways to improve soil performance is often overlooked – and that is applying decent amounts of lime over a period of years,” says Manderson. “Soils naturally become more acidic over time through rainfall, plant growth, and normal biological processes. Unfortunately, modern farming systems can accelerate this through intensive production, regular fertiliser use “As acidity increases, pasture performance can decline as valuable nutrients become less available to plants. However, lime can undo all of this and actually unlock the nutrients already in your soil. ”When plants can access the natural and applied nutrients they need for growth, farmers get a greater return on fertiliser investments.
Manderson says research has consistently proven that healthier soil biology creates a more favourable environment for organism like microbes and earthworms to move through the soil naturally and more effectively, breaking down organic matter.
Avoca Sales and Operations Manager Neil Crowson, left, and Avoca Managing Director Bryce Manderson say farmers will get more from their fertiliser by spreading Lime.
“Soil acidity develops gradually and often goes unnoticed until productivity begins to suffer. Regular soil testing and a well-planned lime programme can help prevent issues before they affect pasture performance and profitability, so this should be part of the fertiliser programme conversation if you want to build healthier, more productive soils.” Avoca Sales and Operations Manager Neil Crowson says many farmers assume that if soil pH is acceptable, lime is not needed. “However, soil balance matters too. Some
soils can have high magnesium levels, which may maintain a reasonable pH while still causing soils to become tight, poorly drained, and difficult for roots to penetrate. Calcium from lime helps improve soil structure, supporting better aeration, water movement, root growth, and nutrient uptake. “The bottom line is lime is far more than a pH correction tool. It helps unlock nutrients, improves fertiliser efficiency, supports clover and nitrogen fixation, strengthens soil structure, and encourages
“Calcium supplied by lime help soil particles bind together into stable aggregates, which also improves soil structure, creating a better balance of air and water throughout the soil profile and that leaves you with a more balanced soil environment and soil structure,” says Manderson.

To lime, or not to lime? Well, there’s no question. Reasons to apply lime to your soil: Increases nutrient availability; raising soil pH with lime to ~6.3-6.5 releases and balances soil nutrients for plant uptake, maximising return on your fertiliser spend. Reduces the need for N-fertiliser; lime stimulates N-fixation by legumes, and N-release from organic matter into plant available forms. Increases soil biological activity and diversity; key to nutrient availability, good soil structure & porosity, and ultimately pasture/crop yield. Improves Soil Structure and Porosity; Increased water-holding capacity in the dry and improved water drainage in the wet, Lime builds resilience to droughts, floods, runoff and erosion. Lime also helps rebalance high-magnesium soils by increasing the influence of calcium, particularly in tight estuarine soils such as those found in the Hauraki Plains. Reduces elemental toxicities evident at low pH levels, e.g. Al, preventing subsoil acidification and improving root growth, root development, and reduces P-fixation.

CROP & PASTURE PREP ADVERTORIAL
Fast sowing pays this spring
Quality summer green feed is money in the bank no matter what the season brings, so if you don’t have a spring cropping plan in place, it’s time to crack into it. That’s the message from Barenbrug area manager Julie Gaukrodger, who’s been helping local farmers get the best out of their land and pasture for years. “A fast game is a good game this season,” she says. “Conditions are favourable: soil temperatures are warming up, and the sooner those forage crops like chicory and turnips are in the ground, the quicker they can start growing — making the most of spring moisture.” Waikato and King Country farmers are taking the predicted dry summer very seriously, and have already started making supplements, she says. If this year’s El Niño does not meet expectations, however, there’s no downside to having paddocks of 501 Chicory, Dynamo turnip or Reviva leafy forage rape on hand for summer grazing. “The beauty of these crops is not just their yield, but also their quality.” The first buffers farmers from feed deficits caused by low rainfall; the second compensates for reduced quality pasture. “Even if we do get summer rain despite forecasts to the contrary, pasture quality during this period is typically low,” Julie says.
“Feeding these high-quality forage crops alongside pasture can support milk production and young stock growth rates that are significantly higher than those achieved on low-quality summer pasture alone.” Bonus animal health benefits include lower parasite pressure in youngstock and
access to non-pasture forage with less risk of facial eczema. 501 Chicory is a drought-tolerant annual cultivar that injects several tonnes of highenergy dry matter into the summer feed budget, and is the perfect break crop to eliminate weeds and pests like yellow bristle grass and black beetle.
Moreover, because it establishes very quickly, it also gives up to one extra full grazing more than some perennial cultivars. Regardless of crop choice, Julie says one thing is paramount: “Watch out for cutworm! We don’t want a repeat of last year, with many crops having to be resown. Early detection is essential.”
Build feed confidence for whatever summer brings. No one can predict the weather, but you can prepare for it. With drought-resilient options like 501 Chicory and Dynamo Summer Turnip, you’ll have quality feed ready when you need it most, helping maintain production and protect pasture performance through the summer months.

CROP & PASTURE PREP In the slipstream of aviation by Amy Fifita
The De Havilland DH-82A Tiger Moth, ZK-ASO, was the first plane to perform commercial aerial topdressing in the country — but it wouldn’t be the last. Taking to the skies with a payload of 181 kilograms of fertiliser, Airwork pilot Charles Brazier applied superphosphate to Sir Heaton Rhodes’ Tai Tapu property in May 1949. At the time, applying fertiliser cost about half as much as spreading it by hand. It was not the first time in history wings were used for farm work. Other pilots had dropped seeds from the air in Northland, Hawke’s Bay and Dunedin, and two gentlemen had independently suggested aerial topdressing. New Zealand was interested in using aircraft to spread fertiliser, and even the government had performed experiments in 1948 at Ōhakea using a Grumman Avenger. With pioneering pilots already having success, Airwork was the crew who brought it to the fore, changing New Zealand’s commercial fertiliser application forever. Shortly after Brazier’s commercial flight for Rhodes, the government continued to run trials. Initially tested by the Royal New Zealand Air Force in a single-engined Grumman Avenger, Miles Aerovans were brought in to see how they fared.
As technology progresses, with drones becoming a common occurrence on Kiwi farms, we can thank the pioneer pilots for the use of the airways in agriculture.
Airwork helped lift the commercial topdressing industry, with the first flight in a De Havilland DH-82A Tiger Moth; they would soon change to the Fletcher FU24, such as this one on a Feilding farm
An air force official said this about the Aerovans in the Ashburton Guardian, January 28 1950: “This aircraft is considered to be a satisfactory type with which to conduct these further experiments, and the lessons learned will be advantageous when a larger type of aircraft is eventually used, carrying five tons of superphosphate or more.” Two aircraft were modified and given to the research and development flight. Having had various trials, findings were
that smaller and nimbler aircraft were cheaper to modify and could be more effective flying through narrow valleys and over hilly, rough terrain. Eventually, in 1953, the US Fletcher Aviation Corporation’s Wendell Fletcher presented a proposal for what became the Fletcher FU 24 to the Aviation Industry Association. This aircraft became New Zealand’s most popular top-dressing plane for its era.

CROP & PASTURE PREP What future for organic produce? by Andy Bryenton
With more than $1 billion in revenue generated each year by organic produce, a plan to grow this sector of the rural economy is vital, and it’s a subject getting some scrutiny with a regulatory overhaul in the pipeline. Core to plans to update the rules surrounding organic farming is the possibility of boosting the limit on organic business turnover, above which a farmer would have to be approved as an operator. The suggestion of boosting this from $10,000 to $30,000 could be in line with the modern realities of being a small-scale organic producer for niche products, and avoid red tape. Additionally, there’s a call for New Zealand to consider a single, overarching organic mark. Those who qualify to use the mark would be certified organic, boosting customer confidence and allowing for a strong showing internationally. Unity and clear rules would encourage investment. Currently, five or more respected thirdparty organic certifiers exist across the nation. Associate Minister of Agriculture Mike Butterick announced public consultation on these and a number of smaller procedural changes in midAugust, calling for grassroots input from the organic farming community to shape how government agencies support the sector.
To qualify as organic, Kiwi produce must already meet strict ecological criteria, including no use of synthetic chemical weedkillers and insecticides, no artificial fertilisers, the deployment of natural pest management, natural compost and natural manures. Genetically-modified organisms are prohibited from being deemed organic, and there’s an added level of scrutiny on the long-term protection of the soil, its microbiome and general health.
Mr Butterick reinforced the fact that the Ministry for Primary Industries has worked closely with organic farmers throughout the development of previous legislation, such as the Organic Products and Production Act 2023. It’s reported that the MPI will be on schedule for a March 31 2028 deadline, beyond which it will be illegal to label any product as organic if it does not comply with the rules.

“New Zealand’s wider organic sector is worth $1.18 billion, with exports of more than $606 million fuelled by global demand for premium and sustainablyproduced products,” Mr Butterick said. “We want to build on that strong foundation and maximise opportunities for regional communities.”

Rural security: A sign of our times
A combination of practical thinking, good systems, and the right technology can help protect what rural people have worked hard to build. Three decades working in security, operations and risk management, both here and overseas, has reinforced something that most rural New Zealanders already know: farmers are some of the most practical people you’ll ever meet. They’re not interested in buzzwords or the latest gadget simply because it’s new. On farms, orchards, forestry blocks or lifestyle properties, technology has to serve a purpose and deliver value. The truth is, rural security has become a sign of the times. Not because rural New Zealand has suddenly become unsafe, but because the world around us has changed.
Global events have affected markets, supply chains, fuel prices and the cost of living. Those pressures flow through the New Zealand economy and reach rural communities. Crime patterns shift too. The result: fuel, tools, machinery, livestock and other high-value assets become targets when opportunistic eyes perceive a property to be vulnerable. That’s where technology earns its place. One of the biggest changes I’ve seen in recent years is the ability to bring visibility to remote locations that once had limited or no cellular and internet connectivity.

Modern communications technology now enables real-time monitoring of remote assets and infrastructure. Preventing just one theft event can often justify the investment. That’s good news for rural New Zealand but it doesn’t stop there. In my experience, the best outcomes occur when technology is combined with a well-thought-out response plan. Technology provides visibility and information, while good people and procedures provide the action. Together, they can identify risks earlier, improve response times, and significantly improve the likelihood of identifying and apprehending offenders. Just as importantly, they act as a powerful deterrent to future offenders looking for an easy opportunity.
Technology alone is not the silver bullet, but it is a force multiplier. The strongest security combines local knowledge, partnerships and sensible procedures with technology suited to the property. At its heart, rural security is not about turning the farm into a fortress. It is about protecting livelihoods, families and the assets that support them. The right technology, used alongside good people and planning, helps protect what rural New Zealand is building for the next generation. Staying abreast of evolving security measures and technologies can make a significant difference to your overall security posture, helping to reduce vulnerability before issues become costly problems.

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE Having a real blast by Andy Bryenton
Water blasting and power washing are so satisfying that it’s spawned a series of simulator video games, but getting it wrong can make a cleaning job into an expensive resurfacing; here are some tips from the professionals. Preparation is everything when it comes to getting the best result from your water blasting mission, and that starts with getting the right machine for the job. Not enough power, and you’re effectively just using the hose. It will power through more water and time before your path or deck are clean. Too powerful, and you could damage the surface itself. Choose a power washer or blaster which is for more than just cleaning the mud off tyres to tackle big spring-clean chores, but also take note of which nozzle you’re using. Many machines, especially those which use a petrol motor, have multiple options, so check to see which one provides a good spread to clean down timber and concrete. Clear off debris with a stiff broom before you begin, and give the machine a test to ensure it’s working at full strength. Now you’re ready to take care of the three big areas around the home which could do with a spruce-up for springtime. For your driveway and concrete paths, it’s always best to start at the highest point and work down. Water, and the filth that is dislodged by your blaster, will run downward and you don’t want to have to double back.
at the top right under the eaves, and begin by brushing away cobwebs while they are dry. It’s amazing how resilient these spiderwebs are to a high-powered stream of water. Why not do the whole job, hire portable scaffolding, and blast the gutters first? Aim down when washing weatherboards, and you won’t force water in between the overlap with this angle.
For decks, always wash along the grain, usually the long axis of each board. If this means going parallel to the house, do it; washing with the grain will prevent timber splitting and frizzing. Once again, long straight strokes, not wavy lines, are the key to a good result. No matter what you’re blasting, wash, then blast, then rinse for a great finish, and stand back to admire your handiwork.
We supply superior quality and workmanship for your new build or renovation. Fascia and spouting of all profiles and materials.

The power of water can cut cleaning jobs down to size, but preparation and technique are vitally important
Use the water jet like a broom in even, parallel sweeps, not too close to the surface, and you’ll see the results immediately. Resist the urge to get artistic. There are stories both apocryphal and real of humorous but crude pictures and words ‘painted’ on to concrete by chuckling homeowners, which are still clearly visible even after several passes to try to erase them. To wash down your house, you’ll need a little less pressure than you might for cleaning concrete surfaces; turn it down and stand back, especially if your paint is getting on in years. Once again, start

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE Logging into a new future by Paul Campbell
Imagination is a human blessing. Building a structure — from a shed to a home to a multi-purpose building — can feature interlocking wood themes, inspired by the log cabin of pioneer days. There are log-themed buildings around New Zealand, so it might be worth a closer look if a new structure is being planned. Like any building, there are regulations involved, and constructing a log cabin ranges from small, consent-free, do-it-yourself backyard sleepouts to much more ambitious large homes. With our building codes, weather variations, and strict council rules, research is going to be key — as is the budget, timeframe and skill level Under the NZ Building Act, you can legally build a cabin between 10m² and 30m² without a building consent. You’ll need to take into account height restrictions: a single storey, the floor up to a maximum one metre above the ground, and a roof height no more than 3.5m from
the floor. You need to use light materials, including framing, thin interlocking logs, and a metal roof. Heavy, full-diameter logs are not good, and the cabin needs to be free-standing a metre from your boundary line or any existing structure. Moreover, it’s a shed — no plumbing allowed, as that needs a building consent to start with. Should your imagination extend further, several building companies specialise in log constructions in New Zealand, and it’s usually a case of a Google search for answers. A standard cabin might run to a budget-friendly $15,000–$35,000 in New Zealand, while a liveable cabin will start around $80,000 or more, depending on size, materials and specifications. An
Logs make attractive buildings
off-the-shelf or standard cabin is a predesigned unit built to fixed dimensions and specifications, manufactured in bulk to keep costs down and delivery swift. A custom cabin build starts with your requirements. You choose the floor plan, dimensions, cladding, insulation level, joinery, internal layout, and fit-out. The builder works from your brief rather than a catalogue. The distinction matters because many companies in New Zealand advertise semi-custom options. These are
standard models with a few changeable features like colour or internal partitions. A standard cabin looks cheaper upfront. However, if it does not fit your site properly or needs modifications after delivery, those costs quickly close the gap with a custom build. Around the country, including several in the Waikato region, there’s been a growing demand for custom cabin builds that meet both residential design standards and lifestyle requirements.

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE Solar panels and easier installation by Andy Bryenton
It’s a bold ambition: ACT leader David Seymour’s crusade against ‘red tape’ has seen an announcement last week that New Zealand might soon be the easiest place in the developed world to install solar panels. The coalition government has agreed to progress the recommendations of a report from the Ministry for Regulation, which blasted the consent process for photovoltaic solar in residential and small-scale applications, saying that some simple installs require up to six signoffs and visits from four inspectors. That’s too much, according to Mr Seymour and Energy Minister Simeon Brown, who say they’d like to see a raft of changes. “Kiwis need access to reliable and affordable energy, but approval for solar panels can take months. The report’s recommendations will make solar an easy option for Kiwi families,” Mr Seymour says. One of the ideas coming to these shores is plug-in solar, an easy method for getting the power of the sun into homes and into the grid. These portable panels are a perfect fit for those renting property, as they can be plugged in or out, moved, and set up with the same ease as a Starlink satellite modem, another piece of popular plug-in infrastructure gaining traction in rural New Zealand. “The government will legalise plugin solar because there was no good
them if they move house. The power of the sun is there to be harnessed. Implementing these recommendations will help people do that, and feel the benefits in their household budgets,” Mr Brown says.
Solar installs are going to become less expensive and easier to process, with fewer permits and costs
reason for preventing Kiwis using it,” said Seymour. “Plug-in systems can be used by renters and people living in apartments who can’t access traditional rooftop solar. If they’re good enough for Germany and the UK, they’re good enough for us.” The two ministers have embraced the recommendations of the Ministry for Regulation’s Sector Review Report, and focus on the figures, which tell a definitive story. “Once all the recommendations are implemented, installation approvals for residential solar will be reduced from about $640 and three months, down to $200 and six days,” says Mr Seymour. “For small–medium scale solar, such as a
farmer installing panels on a milking shed, it would reduce installation approvals from up to $11,000 and six months, down to $1,300 and one month.” Simeon Brown approaches the issue from the perspective of lower power bills and greater energy security. Power price rises have outstripped inflation by almost double in recent years, putting the squeeze on a population already burdened with a general cost-of-living crisis. Solar power is seen as a granular, personalised fix which can help ease this pressure. “Plug-in solar will also be a game-changer for people who rent, meaning people will be able to buy a plug-in solar kit and take it with

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE Cementing a place in history by Andy Bryenton
It’s the most produced substance on Earth, the foundation for engineering and construction works, and a vital part of the modern economy — but concrete has been providing opportunities and surprises since 1,400 years before the birth of Christ. It all began in Nabatea, an area spanning present-day Syria and Jordan. In this dry landscape, two things were needed to build early civilisation: grain silos and water cisterns. The Nabateans found that they could mix sand and lime with crushed rock rubble to make a substance that would set hard, into waterproof, rodent-proof structures. Filling these with water and harvested grain meant that their small kingdom was protected from famine and drought. By 1400 BCE, the royal palace at Tiryns in Greece was constructed using an early form of concrete. This is the mythical site from which Hercules is said to have set out to accomplish his 12 labours. However, the undisputed kings of concrete in the ancient world were the Romans. These empire builders rediscovered concrete and thought it was an amazing advancement. They’d found another level of concrete manufacturing, too, which unlocked a new quality for their architects to exploit. In search of materials to mix into concrete, the builders near Naples made use of the abundant volcanic ash from that part of Italy, and received unexpected results.
The so-called ‘pozzolana’ ash contained silica and aluminium, which underwent a chemical reaction when mixed into concrete, making the end result even tougher and more durable. The Roman port at Cosa is said to have been set underwater, piped down to the harbour floor with tubes. Divers pumped the silicarich mix into three concrete piers, which have lasted 2,500 years and still stand at Cosa today. Another massive concrete achievement of the Romans is the dome of the Pantheon, still the biggest unreinforced concrete dome in the world 1,900 years after its construction. During the Renaissance, the document De architectura (On architecture) by the Roman scholar Vitruvius was rediscovered, and the possibilities of concrete for port building were enthusiastically taken up by the Venetians, who were making whole canals with concrete by the 1670s. The dawn of modern concrete came with the construction of Smeaton’s Tower, an ‘impossible’ lighthouse on the rough Devon coast in England. Concrete
The remains of Roman docks in the Mediterranean have lasted thousands of years, thanks to the power of concrete
construction finally allowed a lighthouse to withstand the battering surf in 1759, and by the dawn of the Victorian era,
modern cement was ready to build the factories and railway stations of a new technological era.

Triple crown in endurance showdown by Andy Bryenton
Win on Sunday, sell on Monday — that was the mantra of motor racing for the big brands at events like Le Mans and Bathurst, for decade after decade. It’s not a bad way to prove the reliability, power and supremacy of your brand, so long as you win races in the brutal world of motorsport. A car that can tackle hours on the track and still beat the competition illustrates an ultimate level of engineering know-how, as much as it showcases the skill and grit of drivers and mechanics. So, how about the world of quad bikes? The ATV universe has endurance races across deserts and through swamps, but not much else like the real Le Mans of quad racing — the Mondial du Quad, hosted just outside of Lyon, France. The 39th edition of this gruelling race was held late in August, challenging riders to a 12-hour blast with 117 competitors. The 4.1-kilometre course in Pont-deVaux has some big differences from the smooth tarmac of the Circuit de la Sarthe at Le Mans. First off, it’s off-road, with all the bumps, jumps and thrills that it brings. Contestants describe the race as ‘a long sprint’, citing the physical demands of the banked corners, jumps and rough surfaces as a true workout. Despite the punishing nature of the course and the length of the race, the podium is often decided by seconds, and
could well pivot on the performance of the pit crews who keep the quad bikes going strong. ‘Every braking manoeuvre, every acceleration, and every pass must be calculated — if not executed with millimetre precision,’ says the information given to teams considering taking up the challenge. This year, the podium at the Mondial du Quad was painted blue, as Yamaha riders dominated. First place went to Randy Naveaux of Belgium, Sylvain Petit and Antoine Cheurlin of France, piloting a Yamaha YZF 450R. It’s Randy’s eighth victory at Pont-de-Vaux. Second place went to Kevin Saar of Estonia alongside Braxton Grosse and Bryce Ford from the United States, who also hit the track on a Yamaha YZF 450R. Bronze went to Chad Wienen of the US, Christopher Tveraen of Norway and Mike van Grinsven of the Netherlands — guess what they rode to third place? It was another YZF 450, giving Yamaha quads a clean sweep. Win on Sunday, sell on Monday. It’s certainly a good reason to give the YZF 450 a look if you want to win races, but there’s a further suggestion behind the endurance-racing win that looks very positive for Yamaha as a brand. If the
Yamaha helped three international teams to victory in the punishing Mondial du Quad endurance race
firm can engineer a quad bike able to handle 12 hours of demanding off-road racing, wheel-to-wheel and at full noise —
surely it can factor that same acuity and bulletproof performance into machines for the farm and the trails?

Power player takes the field
Toyota’s Hilux is a benchmark in New Zealand, the yardstick many people, especially farmers, measure other utility vehicles by. An example of the esteem in which this creation of rubber and steel is held was a 40-year-old Hilux on display at the Northland Field Days this year that prompted heartfelt yarns, wild reminiscences, and more than one offer to purchase (the owner would never part with it). This fond regard makes it tricky to change the formula of the Hilux, and expectations spiked when a BEV model broke cover. After all, the government itself was touting the rise of electric utes a whole election cycle ago, and Toyota has not rushed the Hilux to market as the first BEV utility on the block. Instead, there’s the sense that they have measured thrice and cut with precision, crafting something performing a magic trick many electric vehicles can’t accomplish. Walk up to it, and it’s definitively a Hilux. It’s got the presence, the heft, the go-
anywhere look and the curbside appeal, which have made this brand stand out, ever since Crumpy and Scotty hit the bush trails on our old vacuum-tube TV sets. It’s not weirdly futurist. It’s not an EV UFO. It’s recognisable as the son of Hilux generations past. Slip into the cabin, and aside from the seats being some of the most comfortable I’ve experienced, there’s nothing that screams future shock. The information on the dash is bold and easy to read. You can delve into torque vectoring and statistics regarding performance and range, but the dials would make sense to a motorist from any era. They’d love the big navigation screen, and the ability to snap to adaptive cruise control with a new, simpler system, too. Add in a very comprehensive reversing camera and you’ve got what you need, in all the right intuitive places.

The Toyota Hilux BEV — an electric ute which feels evolved and fit for purpose
Most of all, I suspect that any motorist, no matter their internal combustion fixation, will appreciate the driving experience. The new Hilux will go 315 kilometres on a charge, it will tow 2,000kg, and its dual motors are good for 144 kilowatts. What this translates to, behind the wheel, is a drive which has only two differences from that of a conventional Hilux. First, there’s no noise. It’s surprising how quickly this gets tuned out and is no longer odd. Then there’s the other factor — you’ll never need a petrol pump. In short, praise for the new Hilux BEV is high indeed, because it amounts to this — it feels like a Toyota Hilux. The
calibration, tuning and fettling required to make this work, with a whole new form of motive power, is quietly magical and understatedly triumphant. You don’t adapt. The technology has. You don’t adjust. Toyota has made adjustments. Back in the 1980s, a certain red Hilux became the yardstick by which Kiwis measure utes. The Hilux BEV might just be the measure of every electric utility that comes along after. That means it’s time to test drive the example that sets the curve, like we did on the mixture of winding lanes, new subdivisions, honest rural gravel and fresh motorway near Matakana. It felt right at home on all of them.

New 3.0L diesel adds muscle
For rural drivers, a ute needs to work hard during the week and still be comfortable for everyday life. The new GWM Cannon Alpha 3.0L diesel has been developed with exactly that balance in mind, adding a larger engine, stronger towing performance, and serious 4x4 capability to GWM’s flagship ute. More power for work The biggest change is under the bonnet. The new 3.0-litre turbo-diesel produces 170kW and 620Nm of torque, offering a substantial 35kW and 140Nm step-up from the 2.4-litre model. That extra torque is particularly useful when towing, carrying loads or working across hill country, where strong low-speed pulling power really matters. A nine-speed automatic transmission helps make the most of that power, while the Cannon Alpha retains a 3,500kg braked towing capacity. A dedicated Tow Mode and integrated trailer brake controller add further confidence when moving stock trailers, machinery, boats or other heavy loads. Built for rural conditions The 3.0L diesel uses a part-time four-wheeldrive system with front and rear differential locks, plus dedicated snow, mud and sand drive modes, giving the driver more control when conditions become slippery, uneven or steep. That makes it well suited to paddocks, farm tracks, forestry roads, and other situations where extra traction is important. The tray also offers useful carrying capacity for tools, feed, fencing gear and other equipment, so the Cannon Alpha is well suited to day-to-day farm jobs. Combined

heated and cooled front seats, a 14.6-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, head-up display, wireless phone charging and a 360-degree camera all come standard. The new GWM Cannon Alpha Vanta 3.0L diesel is priced from $71,990, plus on-road

Vying for top spots

The Wanganui Sheep Dog Trial Centre saw 240 dogs strut their stuff in its provincial annual Tux Yarding Challenge, held recently at Ohingaiti. Laura Geering from the Waikato judged at Ohingaiti — her second Tux judging job. “It was a pretty gruelling three and a half days of judging,” said Wanganui Centre publicity officer Brenda O’Leary. Four Wanganui triallists featured in the final: Marton’s Wayne Falkner with Tess, and Don White with Nap, Joleen Joslin and Jen from Utiku, and Duncan Atkinson with Jack from Whangaehu. Josh and Emma Brennan of Rangiwahia provided Romney ewe hoggets for the competition. Brenda said the sheep were perhaps a test for some dogs and their owners, but made for a great competition. Emma and her team also catered for everyone over the four days. “Special mention and a big thanks to secretary Phillippa Lambourn, who has a huge workload leading into, during
and after the event. She kept everything running like clockwork,” said Brenda. Christine Neilson from Waikato Centre competed with her dog Pal, placing second in the runoff, and making a remarkable comeback. As a two-year-old, Pal suffered a seizure in April 2024 that left him blind and unable to walk or stand. Pal was rushed to Auckland’s Veterinary Specialists Aotearoa where he became extremely aggressive to veterinarians and nurses, and required a high level of sedation. Pal was diagnosed with the rarely seen autoimmune meningitis and placed on medication. Brenda said that due to the suffering and state that Pal was in, Christine considered the best course of action would be euthanasia. Fortunately, the veterinarians advised her to give Pal one more day to come out of it.

“That one day saved his life. Christine took him home and had him on numerous pills for months. By October 2024, she had successfully weaned him off all medication and was resigned to him never working again at competition level, and just being a pet. “His second placing at Ohingaiti Tux was something she never ever thought would happen in her wildest dreams. It was payment in full for the wonderful care and love she has given him.” Eighteen of the top dogs over the fourday competition in Ohingaiti competed in the runoff to determine the winner. Raetihi’s Ashton Taylor with his dog Hux won the maiden section on 88 points. Open/maiden top points over the trial went to Leo Jecentho with Blaze, on 97.
Dannevirke’s Bernard Arends with Tarn won the Tux Yarding Challenge with 97.5 points. Christine Neilson and Paul scored 97.3 points to place second, and Wayne Falkner with Tess came third with a score of 96.5. The top three competitors and dogs, and the top maiden competitor and dog at Ohingaiti, will advance to the annual North Island Championships in Taupō. A three-day trans-Tasman trial, held alongside the Tux Yarding Challenge, was judged by Bruce Parkinson, Gavin Drake and Ian Burling. The winners over the three days were Jock Stratten with Spy scoring 92 points, Leo Jecentho and Zap on 91 points, and Ashton Clements with Fern on a score of 97.2.

The Ministry for Primary Industries is seeking applicants for a scholarship programme helping to boost on-the-ground support for farmers and growers with six opportunities of $5,000 each. “There’s a total of $30,000 for the 2027 academic year,” said MPI’s director of On Farm Support Chad Hoggard. “Applicants must have completed, or be completing, their first year of study and be enrolled in relevant agriculture, horticulture, science, forestry or viticulture degrees. “The On Farm Support Science Scholarships back tertiary students with a genuine interest in pursuing a career in the primary industry advisory sector. It’s the fourth year we have run the programme. Ensuring farmers and growers are supported to boost productivity and profitability are essential to double the value of exports.” One of the 2026 scholarship recipients, Massey University student Ella Hogan aspires to work as a farm adviser in the sheep and beef sector. “Receiving the scholarship has given me confidence that I’m heading in the right direction. The financial support has made a huge difference, helping with studyrelated costs and travel expenses.” “The highlight has been the mentoring and support I have received from MPI’s On Farm Support team. My mentor has helped connect me with valuable opportunities, discussion groups, and people who have shared their knowledge and experiences.” Another 2026 recipient, Lincoln University student Fraser Wilson, said: “The

Get ready for El Niño
by Paul Campbell
Weather is the governing god of rural operations, and Waikato farmers, along with much of the rest of the country, are mindful that El Niño conditions are already being felt. The Waikato region faces a high risk of prolonged dry conditions, increasing soil moisture deficits and potential drought for the upcoming 2026/27 summer. Forecasters at NIWA and climate scientists have officially declared a strengthening El Niño event, which is expected to peak between November and December. The climate pattern will fundamentally alter the regional weather compared to recent years. Stronger and more frequent westerly winds are expected to bring drier-than-normal conditions and belowaverage rainfall. Typical rain-bearing weather systems coming from the north are projected to become much less frequent, while
temperatures rise due to unusually warm surrounding sea-surface temperatures. As a result, overall summer temperatures in the region are expected to sit at nearaverage or above-average levels — a characteristic of El Niño’s highly active westerly airflow. The impact on Waikato agriculture and dairy, as assessed by the Treasury and agricultural bodies like DairyNZ, is that this looming dry period poses a direct risk to regional production. Farmers and growers should prepare for soil moisture levels to drop much faster than in a typical season, reducing pasture and crop growth significantly heading into peak summer.
"Take the hassle out of hoof care" 0800 HOOVES | www.thewrangler.co.nz
The combination of gusty westerly winds and spiky, warm temperatures will rapidly accelerate water loss from plants and soil — drastically increasing water and irrigation demand. Rainfall is likely to be more variable and less reliable, with an increased risk of extended dry periods through summer. With an estimated 2.1% to 3.3% dip in milk production looming, DairyNZ and Federated Farmers warn that rising input costs, including fuel, freight and feed, will severely squeeze farm margins and have issued recommended action plans. Federated Farmers national vicepresident Sandra Faulkner emphasised that farmers should “not ignore this thing.” Producers are advised to keep feed budgets up to date and actively monitor pasture growth cover. “Establish clear trigger points for selling down stock or buying in supplementary feed before shortages peak, and connect with local networks, such as the Rural Support Trust, to manage both operational and mental pressure during the dry spell.” As a checklist, advocates suggest farmers must consider the effect on their operation because pasture growth may become less reliable through late spring
Sandra Faulkner, Federated Farmers national vice-president
and summer, requiring greater emphasis on feed budgeting and maintaining feed reserves. There will be an increased importance of monitoring soil moisture, water supplies, feed availability, and the vital need to monitor livestock water demand and heat stress during hot periods.
