Council had signalled its intention for a multi-use sports and leisure centre to be built on the West Melton Domain in its 2012–22 Long Term Plan.

Council’s Open Space and Property asset manager Mark Rykers told council the requirement for a new

community facility to meet the needs of the West Melton community was also identified in the Community Centres and Halls Strategic Plan which was adopted in June.

The strategic plan recommended council “replace the 80-year-old (community hall) facility with a larger and

more flexible integrated community and sport facility in West Melton to cope with population growth in the local catchment and assist with school needs.”

The students had a hands on experience at investigating the inner workings of pigs and then wrote in their blogs about it. Comments included: “the lung was soft like liver”, “there were lots of tunnels and tubes which flowed through” and “the trachea looked a bit like a spine until I cut it up and found it was hollow — that lets the air breathe in.”

“They all got to sit on the toadstool and make their very own wish and have a photo taken with Rainbowlily fairy.”

Gifted students find Selwyn libraries popular extension at One Day School

Selwyn libraries now receive more than twice the number of visits they did five years ago.

Kirwee Model School students Tom Edwards and Sophie Tiede have been formally assessed as having cognitive abilities in the top 5% for their age group which allows them to attend the Gifted Education Centre’s One Day School in Christchurch each week.

Gifted students are released from their regular schools to attend One Day School for a day each week.

“I like One Day School and I look forward to going to it. I like that you learn lots and can make your own things,” says Sophie.

“We go through different topics. I think it is fun because we can be as creative as we can,” Tom says.

One Day School teacher Jenny Smith explains that providing alternative education options for gifted students helps students both academically and socially.

“One Day School focuses on maximising the opportunity for gifted learners to spend time with others of similar ability and age and to work in intellectually demanding contexts on topics which have high interest value,” explains Smith.

Smith explains that gifted students can feel socially isolated in regular schools.

“Opportunities for enhancing social and emotional relationships are fostered as gifted learners can often experience loneliness in their regular class setting without the stimulation and connection of like minds.”

The need for finding like-minded social peers was echoed by Sophie and Tom. “I like all the kids because they’re smart in different areas of their learning,” says Tom. “I like learning from others. The ideas I get from others helps me learn,” says Sophie Parents are responsible for taking their children to the school and pay additional school fees to the One Day School.

“Tom enjoys going,” says Jo Dixon, Tom’s mother. “They encourage thinking laterally. It’s full on mental power all day.”

Jo is thankful to Kirwee Model School for suggesting the One Day School.

“Kirwee is great. They’ve been meeting his needs.” 

Selwyn district has four libraries located at Rolleston, Darfield, Leeston and Lincoln which received a total of 340,000 visits in the year to June 2013, or an average of eight visits per Selwyn resident. In the year to June 2008, they received around 150,000 visits.

Riding high at new cross country course  by Belinda Cullen-Reid

The Hororata Reserve cross country course is going up in the world with the inclusion of 15 new jumps ranging up to 95cm high.

“The Canterbury Community Trust has given us a $15,000 grant to build a new level of jumps to add to the original course,” says reserve chairman Dave Sligh.

“It’s quite exciting. It gives us the option of running a one day event there.”

The course was established in 2008 with jumps up to 60–70cm and was designed as both an equestrian and human cross country course, according

“The new jumps are portable which means the course can be changed around if we want it to,” says Sligh.

The Te Ara Kakariki Greenway Canterbury Trust is calling on Selwyn residents to help them return the district’s flora and fauna to its native state.

The amount of remaining native vegetation in Canterbury is one of the lowest in New Zealand. Less than 1% of the original vegetation remains and the majority of the region is threatened or under-protected.

In the Selwyn district the situation is even more critical where less than 0.5% of the native vegetation remains.

The Trust is a community initiative which was established in 2006 to promote native plants and native plant communities on the Canterbury Plains.

Trust chair Malcolm Lyall says a major objective of the Trust is to encourage and provide assistance to both public and private landowners in the protection of existing indigenous vegetation and in the establishment of new areas of biodiversity plantings, otherwise known as Greendots.

The next wave of Greendot planting days begins this Saturday, September 7 and is followed up by another on September 21.

Over the two days the Trust hopes to plant 6,000 plants and is calling for volunteers. All meals, activities and transport will be provided and there will be activities for kids and live music with dinner.

Selwyn skiers lead the way in Big Mountain series  by Kent Caddick

Selwyn skiers were to the fore in the third and final round of the CHILL Junior Big Mountain Skiing Champs held at Mt Olympus recently.

The free-riding skiing competition for skiers aged 9 to 17 years from around the South Island had kicked off with round one at Temple Basin followed up by round two at the Craigieburn Valley Ski Area.

Poor weather on the Saturday at Mt Olympus meant the event was postponed but with a slight change in the prevailing winds, the cloud cleared and presented soft and forgiving snow conditions on Sunday.

The snow conditions allowed the keen competitors to push their limits and two runs were completed with a mid-afternoon prize giving.

Big Mountain skiers and snowboarders compete in steep terrain and are judged on their ability to ski difficult fall lines while maintaining control, fluidity and style throughout their run.

“We were really stoked to see the turnout of local young riders,” organiser Stu Waddel said.

“They obviously enjoy skiing at Mt Olympus and being part of an event that pushes the limits of their skiing. We had a combination of first

timers competing and a collection of older juniors.”

In the boys’ 10 years section Harry Cookson from Darfield was judged first with younger brother Will second.

It was another Selwyn double in the boys’ 12 years division with Sam Marsh of Springfield piping Hororata’s Henry Freeman for the win.

Elliot Robinson from Christchurch won the boys 14 years, Craig Murray from Wanaka the boys 16 years and Patrick Greene from Christchurch was first in the 18 year boys in a tight contest with James Hampton.

In the girls competition Phoebe Young from Wanaka took out the 12 years division, Lucy Brook from Christchurch was the girls 14 years winner.

Waddel says thanks go to all the skiers who took part and the ski areas which hosted each event, Temple Basin, Mt Olympus and Craigieburn.

“We were fortunate with the weather conditions and the level of skiers coming through is fantastic.”

Creative cladding keeps chooks content  by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Over the past eight months engineer Gary Smith has been tinkering in his West Melton workshop to develop a unique method of cladding buildings.

Mr Smith has designed a patent pending building cladding system using a wooden macrocarpa and wire mesh exterior which can be filled with recyclable materials such as stone, brick, shredded tyres, or even glass.

“The cladding method has not been used before at all in New Zealand and to my knowledge anywhere else in the world,” Mr Smith said.

The idea grew from a landscaping project on his 10 acre property at West Melton.

“I created a sheltered area. The cladding I used was stone and macrocarpa because it suited the area.”

The new cladding design came out of a desire to have flat and parallel stone walls encased in mesh. Mr Smith played

around with ways of being able to fill the mesh without the walls going out of line or bulging.

“No one has ever filled the wall cavity with stones right to the top before. There is no cement used.”

The successful wall construction led to a garden shed prototype being built on the property.

“My wife said she was happy for me to build the shed if she could use if for a chicken coop.”

What Mr Smith referred to as ‘the chicken manor’ was a resounding success for both him and the shed’s residents.

“They’re all laying an egg each day so they can’t be too unhappy.”

Can your body heal?

Without our in-built healing systems our first health problem may well have been our last! The health issues that we experience are often the result of these repair processes not working properly or at worst even working against healing. When unwell we need to make sure these repair processes are able to work as well as possible. If not you may be consigning yourself to a lifetime of poor health.

As an example of how this works in practice, I have been helping someone with arthritis, muscular pain and low energy. After investigation we found she had long standing arthritis and had developed statin myopathy. This is the muscular weakness and pain from long term use of cholesterol lowering medications. These can also interfere with normal energy metabolism as they restrict co enzyme Q10 needed for energy conversion within cell mitochondria.

We made sure her diet was anti-inflammatory then added a broad spectrum multi-nutritional supplement plus a high grade CoQ10 supplement.

I have just spoken to her and after only two months has had a major reduction in muscle and joint pain and has had a significant increase in her energy levels. While her results have been excellent there was nothing particularly difficult about what we did. We just identified the healing processes compromised by disease and medication then added these from both supplements and a good diet.

“Back in the 60s and 70s everything was well built. Now you buy things and in six months they don’t look any good.

I want people to have something unique in their backyards and (provide) quality at an affordable price.”

There was a time, not so long ago, when 101 horsepower was considered somewhat excessive for a road-going car. Today, it’s almost the norm for a proper performance vehicle to top the ‘ton’.

But for an off-road machine — and one which can offer thrills and steer clear of spills across some of the roughest terrain — 101 horsepower is still a little scary.

DHS Jazz band wins bronze  by Belinda Cullen-Reid

The Darfield High School jazz band jammed its way to bronze at the Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival in Blenheim recently.

The festival was open to all South Island secondary schools and included an opportunity to attend a tutorial master class with Royal New Zealand Air Force Band musicians and to perform

at a gala concert and public concerts around Blenheim.

“They did really well and came home with a bronze award. They improved so much,” the school’s head of music Rachel Balchin says.

She says learning to play with attitude was something the students learnt during their master classes.

“I think they picked up the vibe of ‘The voice of your community’ what jazz is all about.” 
