Her comment marks 10 years since Parenting Week, which began on Monday and runs until September 19, was first launched by The Neighbourhood Trust as an initiative to empower and upskill parents and caregivers in the Canterbury region.

“Much has changed during that time, but the challenges and rewards of parenting remain the same,” says Ms Arthur.

“Parenting Week, Christchurch was born from a desire to strengthen and empower parents through offering access to a range of expert speakers and interactive workshops. We cover a broad range of parenting topics and crossing a spectrum of ages. This

year the theme is ‘Helping Whanau to Flourish’.

“We recognise that parents have enormous influence over their child’s development, their success, wellbeing and happiness.

“Parents are not the only influences in the lives of our children, especially after they begin school, start interacting with peers, choosing friends and facing the world in general.

“Parenting can be as overwhelming as it is gratifying, and it can also be subject to fads and changing styles.

The underlying basic principles remain the same — our tamariki need the right direction, support, understanding and love.”

The Neighbourhood Trust is passionate about bringing together a host of resources to help parents broaden their knowledge base, whilst gaining the support they need on their parenting journey.

“As in previous years, we have partnered with some of the very best service providers and expert speakers.

We have put together 10 action-packed days of content with over 30 different events across Christchurch and this year our aim is to reach more parents than ever — we would just love everyone to share in what is on offer.”

“I am very happy to approve the plan, which has had huge community input and marks a significant step in getting Christchurch back to local leadership,” said Minister for Greater Christchurch Regeneration, Megan Woods.

“How often does a city have the opportunity to consider the development of an area of 602 hectares so close to its centre? It is a once in a lifetime chance.

This area is special for many reasons but mostly because it was once home to more than 5,000 households. It is so important that the future use of this land reflects its value and is a fitting tribute to what Christchurch has been through. “One of the key areas this plan

had to address was how will it support positive outcomes for the people of Christchurch, and how will it provide certainty and confidence about the ongoing regeneration?”

Minister Woods says by setting a clear vision for the future of the area, the intergenerational project is a chance to leave a legacy for the future.

“Realising the plan will require sustained and coordinated effort by the public sector, mana whenua, the community and investors. I would like to acknowledge the work and passion that has gone into the Regeneration Plan process, from the community, Regenerate Christchurch, and many partners for their input, and feedback during the process. Most importantly, I would like to thank the community — many people were involved in contributing to the vision and objectives.” 

Rolleston’s fledgeling toy library has been given a major boost by two local companies.

Selwyn Special Olympics swimmer Charlotte Rozen has returned from the Australian Down Syndrome swimming championships with a gold and three silver medals.

Chris and Ayyam O’Brien from Storage King Rolleston and The Warehouse Rolleston have together given the library $1,500 worth of new toys.

The president of the toy library organising committee Fiona Morland said she and her committee were thrilled by the generosity of the two companies.

“Chris and Ayyam had already come on board with the free use of one of their storage units for two years and now to have them and Jim Ralfe from The Warehouse Rolleston get together with this toy donation is fantastic.”

Fiona Morland said they were given free rein to select $1,500 worth of toys in a ‘toy grab’ from The Warehouse.

Among the toys collected were ride-on cars, Little People castles, Hot Wheels sets, dolls and accessories.

“It was great fun selecting the toys, even for we adults,” Fiona said. “It was like all our Christmases had come at once.”

The Rolleston Toy Library is expected to be open in time for Christmas. Initially, it will be an online service offering toys on loan from a centralised hub at Storage King. However, the organising committee is looking for a store-front facility to display the toys and to be a pick-up point. Anyone with that kind of space available is invited to contact the library on rollestontoylibrary@gmail.com or 027 934 4196.

It is the first toy library in Rolleston, though toy libraries have existed in New Zealand since 1974. An early patron of the Toy Library Federation was British comedian Spike Milligan. 

“Charlotte is 23 years old and follows a demanding training schedule with Special Olympics Canterbury at Rolleston, and is a squad swimmer with the Selwyn Swim Club,” says mum Tracey.

“She competed in eight events and was proud to win medals in four races. She won gold in the 25m breaststroke, and silver in the 25m freestyle, 25m backstroke and 100m individual medley. Charlotte could not take the title of Australian champion in her winning breaststroke race, as she is a New Zealand citizen, so the second-placed Australian swimmer shared the top spot, and also received a gold medal.”

The Australian championships are held every two years.

“On the Saturday night of the competition the swimmers, officials and families were invited to a gala dinner at the Grand Chancellor Hotel in Brisbane.

“This was a very glamorous event, and after a lovely dinner, the athletes and support staff danced the night away. The party did not deter the athletes from putting in another top effort on the Sunday for the second day of the meet, again under sunny skies.

“Swimming outdoors in late August was certainly a novelty for the New Zealand delegation of six swimmers who competed.” 

Greendale unveils new sign

Local elections loom With slightly fewer candidates on offer, this year’s Selwyn District Council elections may not be as competitive as previous elections, but there is still plenty to entice voters.

In a timely celebration of Te Wiki o te Reo Maori (Maori Language Week), Greendale School has unveiled its new school signage.

Last year the school was gifted its Maori name, Kanuka Ruruhau, by local iwi Te Taumutu Runanga.

At the unveiling ceremony, attended by staff, students, parents and invited guests, year six students took centre stage and explained that Kanuka is seen as symbolic of the students, with the older children acting as the nursery for the younger children, providing an environment for the younger ones to thrive.

“This could also be said of the kaiako and older members of the kura (school) providing safe, nurturing circumstances

for all your students to thrive. The multipurpose use of the Kanuka also acts as a symbolic reference to the wide range of attributes students can bring to the school but also, by providing a nurturing environment, they will leave with many more,” they said.

The macrocarpa signage was sponsored by Mr Mechanical in Hornby.

After the students’ rendition of the national anthem and waiata Rere Rere Ripo, Al Herreman and Julia Banks of Mr Mechanical proudly unveiled the sign in the presence of the school board and community. 

Overall, there are 20 candidates vying for the 12 seats on the council, including the mayoralty compared to 23 candidates for the 2016 election.

This year there are two candidates, incumbent Sam Broughton and former mayor Bill Woods, putting their names forward for the mayoralty, compared to the packed field of five that stood in 2016. The most contested of the district’s three wards is the Malvern Ward with four candidates standing for the two available seats. The ward with the most candidates is Selwyn Central Ward, which has seven candidates vying for its four seats.

As well as the council positions, elections are being held for two midCanterbury seats on the board of Environment Canterbury and seven members for the Canterbury District Health Board. Voter turnout is once again likely to be an issue. Historically, local body elections attract fewer voters

than general elections the most recent of which had a voter turnout of 79 per cent.

In the 2016 local body election, the voter turnout nationwide was 42 per cent. Selwyn did slightly better at 44.6 per cent.Local Government New Zealand says its research showed that the main reasons people gave for not voting are they forgot, ran out of time or were too busy. Statistics provided by New Zealand Electoral Commission show that 89.96 per cent of Selwyn’s 58,720 eligible voters have enrolled to vote, slightly higher than the national average.

This year’s local body election will once again be postal. The Selwyn District Council says that enrolled voters should receive their voter packs through the mail from approximately September 20 to 25. Voting closes midday Saturday, October 12. Further information about voting and candidate profiles are on the council’s website selwyn.govt.nz. 

Cupcakes make history Student earns u by Ann van Engelen

Community members involved in the SPCA Cupcake Day made history last week helping to raise more than $401,000 to care for the animals the organisation rescues.

“Together people across New Zealand fundraised this incredible amount through cupcake and bake sales to help our cause,” says SPCA communications manager Jessie Gilchrist.

“This is the most successful cupcake day in the history of the event, and in addition, we also had the most people sign up for the event with more than 1,600 people baking. We couldn’t have asked for a better outcome and loved seeing all the beautiful and delicious creations people made for their various activities.

“We help more than 41,000 animals every year across the country and the Christchurch centre is the third biggest SPCA in New Zealand.

“We had people selling baking at work, through school, at home and in community groups. Some supporters

had an online virtual fundraiser, and that was also very popular, which is really amazing.

“We are blown away and humbled by the support as we never imagined we would raise this amount. We are so grateful to those who took part. It is encouraging to know the animals have the support of New Zealanders.”

The Christchurch SPCA are still in need of dog enrichment toys such as Kong toys.

“These food puzzles are important for shelter environment as they help keep the dogs mentally and physically stimulated as they work to get the food out.

In its first year participating in the NCEA, Rolleston College already has its first student to gain a level one qualification with an excellence endorsement.

Only 20% of level one students nationwide earn the endorsement, and it is rare for anyone to get it before the end of the school year.

Fifteen-year-old Abbey Henderson earned the endorsement following a year in which, the school said, she performed at excellence levels across all her courses but had shown particular strengths in the areas of technology and science.

Pillowslips for Starship

Maddie Collins has had two kidney transplants in the past eight years, and now the 15-year-old makes pillowslips to give to children going through difficult times in hospital.

Carol Gurney opened Carol’s Closet in Hororata to support the local St John’s Parish as the township continues to move forward after the September 4 earthquake in 2010.

“Sylvie Montgomery has been volunteering at the store since it opened three years ago. She has a natural flair for fashion, is amazing fun and generous with giving her time. She always gets the customers laughing,” says Carol.

St John’s stone church suffered damage from the earthquake, and the profits Carol’s Closet make is donated to the parish to help with the upkeep.

“The shop used to be the old library in front of the Hororata Hall. Everything is donated — we have handbags, scarves, jewellery, shoes, evening gowns and hats. We focus on high-end clothing, which I steam clean and check for imperfections. What we don’t use is donated to the Salvation Army.”

Carol has a team of five volunteers including Sylvie.

“I love helping. We have regular customers, travellers passing through and people making special trips because they have seen our Facebook page,” says Sylvie.

“Carol’s Closet is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 11am to 3pm and closed during the school holidays.

come. They often drop into the cafe for a delicious lunch, coffee or wine.

“Hororata community look out for each other, and it is a very progressive little town. We pulled together after the quake to solve issues ourselves. We organise events such as The Highland Games, the fete and the Night Glow hot air balloon event. The Highland Games and Night Glow attract 12,000 people every year.

“This Saturday, September 14, we have a Swap Meet at the Domain with people bringing car and motorbike parts and other items to sell. What we do helps the community and the parish, and we do that very well.” 

“Students at St Margaret’s School do the William Pike Challenge learning a new skill and something communityminded. Maddie chose pillowslip making, donating them to children in Ward 26B at Starship Children’s Hospital,” says mum Sarah.

“We also donate to the Christchurch paediatric outpatients’ ward but these, stay there. Families struggle and this is a nice thing she can do. We are grateful for the support we get ourselves and love getting photos of the recipients with their pillowslips.”

As a child, Maddie developed a rare disorder that attacks the kidney’s filtering units causing permanent damage and failure. “Her first

transplant developed donor-specific antibodies causing the donor kidney to die. Her second transplant has lost a lot of function, so we are heading back overseas for further input to try and keep this kidney going longer.”

Maddie also sells her creations to cover her costs.

“We buy fabrics overseas to make them extra special. Her dad Adam and I are very proud of her because some days are long and tough. All Blacks visit college CultureFest a window on the world

They came, they saw, and they were conquered; four of the current All Blacks received a rapturous and at times thunderous welcome when they visited Rolleston College recently.

Joe Moody, Jordie Barrett, Codie Taylor and Jack Goodhue made a flying visit to the college a day after being named in 2019 World Cup Squad.

It was all part of an annual tradition of the All Blacks heading to the provinces before embarking on an overseas tour.

The All Blacks were welcomed to the college by a rousing haka from the school’s kapa haka group and even these seasoned All Blacks, who have performed the haka many times themselves, seemed overwhelmed by the performance.

They reciprocated by freely giving autographs, taking part in a Q&A and even venturing out on to the sports fields to toss the ball around and to give out coaching tips.

There was no shortage of photos taken on the day.

Rolleston College principal Steve Saville said, “The fact that these high profile, professional sportsmen were so down to earth and approachable meant that our learners saw first-hand how top performers conduct themselves with humility and dignity.”

Luca Bollea, the captain of the school’s Under 15s Rugby team at

Rolleston, said: “It was fun doing the haka. It shows a good insight of what we are in the school and how we work together.

“We earned our place to sit with the All Blacks by playing for the school and representing the school spirit.”

The All Blacks now leave for the World Cup in Japan where they will compete in their first match on Saturday, September 21. 

CultureFest is back for 2019, bringing a window on the world to Selwyn.

Now in its fourth year, the popular festival will be celebrating the diversity of Selwyn through food, art, sport and performance and have a go activities.

Celebrating thirty years u by Ann van Engelen

On September 19, 1989, the Malvern Child Care was opened at the old Catholic school building on Telegraph Road, providing for a need in the community, a place for children to come and learn and be cared for.

“The first day had 10 children attend with a total of 40 on the roll. The cost was $3 an hour,” says manager Clara Clatworthy.

“Thursday, September 19, will be our 30th anniversary. We will celebrate with the children on the day by making a birthday cake, singing ‘Happy Birthday’ and having a bit of a party.

“We are now called Darfield Preschool and Nursery. Based in our own purpose-built building on Cardale Street, we have 100 children on the roll, with up to 57 attending each day. The cost is $6 an hour.”

The centre continues to be a communitybased centre with a board of trustees consisting of parents from our community.

“It is wonderful to be involved in the preschool community and being on the board gives great insight to the education of our young minds,” said board chairperson Charlotte Butler.

“Many families have passed through our doors. It continues to bring us joy to see what

the children are doing and achieving in their lives as they move through primary school to secondary schools and beyond.

“Clare has been with us for nearly 18 years and loves to attend the high school senior prizegiving to see what everyone plans to do. She remembers them as toddlers in the sandpit or on the bike track. We have started to see things come full circle and reconnect with the families, as previous children return as parents.

“On Friday, September 20, from 5.30pm, we invite the community and anyone involved with the preschool over the last 30 years, to come for a small celebration and reminisce.

“Past board members, teachers, parents, grandparents and children — dig out those old profile books for a few laughs and giggles.

ENGAGING YOUNG MINDS StarJam creates friendships Maxine Gunning is a Volunteering Canterbury member who gives many hours of her time to StarJam, an organisation dedicated to making a difference for people with disabilities lives through music and performance.

“Maxine is known as one of our most committed volunteers at StarJam. She brings laughter and contagious energy to our Rolleston workshop every single week,” says StarJam programmes coordinator Ella van Wijk.

“Our young people adore her, and not only does she help out in our workshops, but she dedicates time to our community events during the year.

She recently paid her own flights and accommodation to volunteer at our Auckland Gala Dinner to support one of her Magic Movers Jammers who was performing. The generosity she brings from her heart is why StarJam is the amazing organisation it is. Maxine is a prime example of the types of people who are making differences in our young people’s lives.”

Maxine says she stumbled across volunteering at StarJam in 2018.

“It is the best thing I have ever done. I know giving my time makes a difference to the Jammers, but the difference they make to my life is phenomenal,” she says.

“The positive energy and joy that comes from them every week are inspiring, and I walk away in awe of how amazing they are. StarJam is by far the best night of my week, and I couldn’t imagine not going along to dance and sing.”

Long ago, in the early days of the Chevrolet Corvette, designer Zora Arkus-Duntov posed a simple question. What if his working man’s blue-collared muscle car took up the design strategy of the era’s Le Mans racers, and put the engine in the middle?

At the time, Ferrari was still putting the engine in the front of its 250GT, and Lamborghini had but recently given up making tractors. The conventional Corvette rolled on, but the idea never really died. Now it’s finally come to fruition, with the advent of the midengined, supremely powerful, arrowshaped road missile, which is the C8 iteration of Kentucky’s finest.

With close to 500 horsepower from its new LT2 powerplant, the mandatory eight cylinders and, for the first time, no option for a stick shift, the Corvette’s latest evolution looks set to take on the likes of Porsche and AMG. Further aspirations swaps and the possibility of hybrid electric acceleration could see this all-American good ‘ol boy taking 1000hp to the competition. That’s McLaren and Ferrari territory, for a machine which, like Ford’s GT40 before, it punches well above its pay grade.

Since this is not a million-dollar highly-strung boutique confection, the price will be considerably smaller than that of Italy and Germany’s offerings.
