The pair were in action over the weekend at an indoor meeting at Canterbury Agricultural Park in Christchurch. Selwyn is one of the worst central South island territorial local authorities when it comes to the ratio of women to men elected to council. Of 11 councillors at SDC only two, or 18%, are women. Christchurch City Council is the leading authority when it
comes to gender balance with five of the 13 councillors women (38.5%) while the Waimakariri District Council is the worst, with just one councillor of 11 (9%) of the female gender. Three, or 25%, of Ashburton District Council’s 12 councillors are women while of Hurunui District Council’s nine elected representatives, two (22%) are women. None of the central South Island councils currently have a woman as mayor although that may change in Christchurch with former Labour MP Lianne Dalziel the leading contender for the top job.

In Selwyn two women, deputy mayor Sarah Walters and mental health advocate Dr Olive Webb, are among the five challengers lining up against incumbent mayor Kelvin Coe. Long serving Springs Ward councillor Debra Hasson, is the only other woman currently around the Selwyn council table. Her position is secure as she has been re-elected unopposed, while Cr Walters’ position is dependent on either retaining her Selwyn Central Ward seat or winning the mayoralty. continued on page 3 …
