Ray and Maree Goldring have been involved with conservation for 40 years, doing work both professionally and as volunteers, including pest eradication, protecting native plants and animals, and educating others.

Ray said they have always had an affinity for the natural environment.

“It’s our second home, our heritage.

It’s where we feel most comfortable and welcome. Our role now is to reverse some of the mistakes humans have enforced onto our natural environment

and to leave things better than when we found it.”

In 2008 Ray and Maree formed a group called the Waimakariri Ecological and Landscape Restoration Alliance which works to eradicate spreading wilding pines in the Upper Waimakariri and Castle Hill Basins. Ray is chairperson and Maree secretary of the group which consists of various organisations, high country farmers, Castle Hill villagers and other concerned members of the general public.

“Our main function is to raise finance to engage professional contractors and get helicopters in to eradicate the wilding pines. So far we have raised over one million dollars,” Ray said.

“The consequences of not undertaking this work are the complete loss of our iconic high country landscapes, subalpine and alpine vegetation and many of our current recreations, such as skiing.” continued on page 6 …

A working plan has been drawn up for McHugh’s Plantation near Darfield with plans to cater for walkers and mountain bikers, but horses may be left out.

West Melton’s Millennium drinking fountain is on the move to be given a face lift in time for the town’s 150th celebration in October.

Malvern ward district councillor Sam Broughton said over 80 submissions were received during the public consultation period with around half coming from outside of the Darfield area.

“The two most popular suggested changes were the separation of walking and mountain biking tracks for safety and the accommodation of equestrian aspects to the park,” Cr Broughton said.

“The working par ty discussed the merits of both suggestions and decided that they would work to separate the mountain bike and walking tracks.”

Cr Broughton said another common theme amongst submissions was the desire to keep a rugged and isolated feel to the forest.

The fountain, which was blessed and declared open on January 1, 2000, will be taken back to West Melton resident Peter Stafford’s place to be restored.

It will then be placed on a new site in the town which is yet to be decided.

Mr Stafford said the fountain was paid for and built by local people as a way of acknowledging 2000 years since the birth of Christ.

The structure of the fountain is made from Waimakariri river stone and granite sourced from Christchurch. It was fixed to a pre-stressed concrete slab which meant it was able to be moved in one piece.

It is hoped the drinking fountain will be re-sited in time for the town’s 150 year anniversary over this coming Labour Weekend. 

Residents warned over spring winds  by Kent Caddick

The Selwyn District Council is warning residents to be prepared for high winds in the coming months.

Last September Selwyn experienced its worst wind storm in nearly four decades, with winds gusting over 150kmh in parts of the district.

The winds caused power outages to 28,000 homes in Selwyn and Christchurch, with power outages lasting over a week in some areas of Selwyn.

The wind caused extensive damage to trees and property around the district.

“Strong winds can occur at any time of the year but are especially common in springtime and Selwyn residents need to be prepared to cope with these,” council’s emergency management officer Ryan O’Rourke said.

forecasts regularly so they know if strong wind is forecast and can then take steps to prepare their family.

“I would also encourage people to join the Selwyn Gets Ready website as it helps communities take care of each other in an emergency.” he says.

The website, www.selwyn.getsready. net is a database which provides local community response teams with information on who may need help in an emergency and what resources and skills are available in the community.

Power company Orion has also been reminding Selwyn property owners of the importance of trimming trees near power lines.

“A power outage caused by a tree may affect many people, including those with health issues,” Orion’s energy projects manager Stephen Godfrey said.

“Tree owners need to keep their trees trimmed and well away from power lines especially given the likelihood of strong winds at this time of year.”

He also advised people not to touch any downed power lines as they may be live and to report them immediately to Orion. 

memorial unveiled

At a poignant ceremony at West Melton Primary School a newly built war memorial was unveiled to remember those from West Melton who had fought and died at war.

West Melton primary school teacher Shane Dawson and school caretaker John Blundell decided to build the war memorial because there was no such structure in the town.

“During the course of our research we found that a lot of the servicemen from West Melton had actually gone to our school,” Mr Dawson said.

The memorial is made using stones from the Waimakariri, Rakaia and Selwyn rivers.

“Our thinking behind this was that by using stones from the three rivers, it was linking the whole area. It also symbolises how people from different areas were forced together to work for

a common goal, in times of turmoil,” he said. A plaque engraved with the names of soldiers who died in battle was placed at the top of the memorial and a time capsule inside.

The memorial was blessed by Denise Sheat from Taumutu Marae and was unveiled by Brigadier Phil McKee from the New Zealand Defence Force who has a child at the school.

Brigadier McKee told the school and invited guests that it was fitting that the memorial was built during the year when New Zealand marks the 100th anniversary of the beginning of WW1 and 150 years since the settlement of West Melton as a colonial town.

Combining his lifelong loves of flight and oil painting, West Melton’s Michael J Osborne will showcase his aviation art at a solo exhibition at Terrace Downs Resort this month.

 Michael Osborne combines his love of flying with his desire to capture the magnificence of flight in his latest exhibition at Terrace Downs Resort

Mr Osborne is a retired commercial pilot who uses his insider knowledge of how aeroplanes work to help him perfect the realism style of painting aeroplanes.

“I know a lot about aeroplanes.

I know how they fly and I know what parts do what and how it all works. I think my love of flying comes through in my work,” Mr Osborne said.

Mr Osborne began flying as a teenager — in fact he says he could fly before he had his driver’s licence. At the same time he was learning to paint with oils at Gore High School under the tutelage of Jeffrey Hughes.

“My mother always encouraged me to paint. My Grandfather painted in oils,” Mr Osborne said.

commercial pilot’s licence. He started by hanging a couple of paintings at the aero club in Gore, and before long was receiving orders from the pilots who came in, wanting to have personalised paintings of their own planes.

Mr Osborne said aviation art is huge and under the guidance of his agent, Rachel Inch from Terrace Downs, he plans to market his work worldwide.

As well as his original oil paintings Mr Osborne will sell limited edition prints and merchandise featuring copies of his paintings including mobile phone covers, mugs and fridge magnets.

“These days there’s a lot more opportunity to sell your art worldwide, with websites such as eBay.” Mr Osborne’s exhibition Flying High: Aviation Art will run from September 19 until October 29 at Terrace Downs Resort. 

There are a number of events planned, with the first being The Time After Time Field Day at Lyn and Dave Robinson's Farm opposite 454 West Melton Road on Saturday, September 20.

The West Melton 150th committee's goal has been to celebrate the past, present and future of West Melton and the field day enables us to celebrate the past, while educating today’s children on their community’s heritage.

The day’s celebrations will trace the farming history of the rural West Melton community, from when wheat was king and forests were felled, through to the dominance of the sheep industry and on to today’s rise of dairying.

The field day event is a tribute to our colonial ancestors who first arrived in West Melton in 1864. The field day has been designed to portray what life would have been like for these hardy souls, including a colonial village with cottage and shops. Throughout the day there will be demonstrations of activities traditionally carried out in the West Melton rural community of the late

1800s. Local artisans will demonstrate the art of spinning and weaving while the blacksmith hammers out horseshoes for the working horses of the day.

Butter will be churned and bread made from locally ground flour while Mrs Allen fills the air with music played on her antique pump organ.

With an emphasis on our rural history, working dogs will chase sheep across the paddocks while Clydesdales and historic tractors plough the fields. continued on page 8 …

Unfortunately the grass isn’t the only thing to get active in your yard, with grass grubs threatening to ruin even the most carefully cared for lawn as many in West Melton will know.

And grass grubs don’t just feed on grass, they will destroy the roots of other valuable plants in a garden as well.

You’ll notice around October that suddenly your well lit outdoor areas and windows are swarming with buzzing grass grub beetles, blindly battling for the light. This is the adult grass grub which has emerged from the ground where it has been busy laying eggs the previous summer, feeding on the roots of grass until spring.

From October through to January these seemingly harmless swarming beetles love to feed on trees and shrubs, especially those producing fruit. So, not only are they jiggering lawns but they are also damaging plants above ground There are products out there which can help control this pest, including treatments for the lawn and sprays for trees and shrubs. While autumn is the ideal time to treat lawns, from October onwards is the best time to spray shrubs and trees, so talk to your local lawn care specialist now in preparation.

In the meantime here are a few tips which might help at least reduce the number of pests on your property.

Larvae Remove any grubs you come across when digging the garden. Digging over a garden in spring will disturb the larvae.

Hopefully some helpful birds will assist in alleviating you from a larvae or two.

While you’re not going to want to dig up your lawn every year, aerating it using a plug or spiked aerating tool will disturb the grubs in a similar way.

While it’s questionable whether aerating spiked shoes do actually aerate a lawn, they will be effective in skewering the grubs causing a quick and reasonably painless death.

Natural remedies include smelly oils such as eucalyptus, tea tree and liquid seaweed.

Another way of getting rid of grass grub is to roll your lawn in autumn when the ground is nice a damp. This will squish quite a few of the grubs, reducing the damage done to the lawn.

Beetles Don’t leave outside lights on unnecessarily during summer when the beetles are around. You don’t want to attract these little blighters to your property.

Aftercare Fertilising a lawn after it has been damaged by grass grubs will help to repair it faster. 

West Melton lifestyle block owners Ron and Pam Panckhurst are a perfect example of people who make the most of every inch of their lifestyle property.

For the past 18 years the couple have enthusiastically utilised their two-hectare property, studying, growing, harvesting, and manufacturing a wonderful array of items for both home use and sale.

“It’s an example of a small block intensively used,” Ron says.

A ‘quick walk’ around the property turns into a two-hour sojourn through nooks and crannies filled with the weird and the wonderful. It’s mind boggling what these self-confessed passionate hobbyists have managed to incorporate onto their land.

“We’ve always been hobbyists. The family think we’re a bit over the top,” Pam confesses.

Further into the garden we come across a large structure fully enclosed with chicken netting, which Ron explains is the vegetable garden which is both animal and bird proofed. Nearby is a fully functional compost heap, and further on a worm farm.

Both Ron and Pam are passionate hobbyists who enjoy learning about the things they produce as much as actually holding the finished article.

Perhaps the most astonishing part of the property is the large shed which

looks reasonably normal from the outside, but inside it’s like entering into Alice’s wonderland.

The first door reveals what appears to be a busy workshop. This is Ron’s space, where he invents all manner of things.

Ron who was once a senior technician at the University of Canterbury now runs a small business from the shed, building amongst other things, purpose-built trolleys for research laboratories and interactive science exhibits for science centres all over New Zealand such as Science Alive.

“I’ve had exhibits travel throughout New Zealand to science centres and schools. I’ve probably built between 300 to 400 of them,” Ron says.

Through the next door is Ron’s rare wood collection including hickory, holly

and walnut. He’s been sourcing bits of wood for years and has them stacked ready for use on an important, yet to be decided project.

Squeezing past a van we enter a third room. This one is nearly full too, and what an array of items. Those that catch the eye are a collection of church organs and the torso of a female mannequin.

The church organs have been salvaged for future restoration.

Next is the still for Pam’s lavender oil business, and then there’s the pottery kiln which hasn’t been used for a while but might be fired up again soon and possibly used for pottery lessons.

scales, tubes and unidentifiable gadgets and strange smells. I’m told it’s actually the winery, where they produce around 300 bottles of their own vintage a year.

Ron has even made the grape press.

Their vineyard supplies them with pinot noir, riesling, chardonnay and müllerthurgau grapes.

Always keen to learn new things, Ron studied viticulture at the University of Canterbury for a year.

“It’s a learning experience. I’ll always be that sort of person. While I’m able I’ll still be keen to keep learning. If you stop learning you stop living.” A back room

True to the couple’s hands-on approach to their hobbies they are involved with every aspect of the lavender business from growing through to sales at local markets under the name Liddesdale Lavender.

“We grow and steam distill the lavender products ourselves. We include the oil in our own products,” Pam says.

Their latest venture in the garden is

There are different years, some more successful than others, but they always have something to take to parties.

“I’m interested in the chemistry of wine. I like to find out how things work, how they grow and how to use them,” Ron says. Pam’s passion is for the garden, especially her crop of lavender which is planted in a separate section of the property in neat rows. Lavender grows really well here. They have good frost protection. “My exercise is in the garden,” she says.

The couple harvest and dry the saffron and sell it in half gram packs at the Lincoln market.

Ron and Pam’s goal with their land is to be as self-sufficient as possible. Whether it be their extensive vegetable garden, orchard or vineyard, the philosophy behind their lifestyle is to work out what you need to do, and don’t be afraid to give things a go.

Last week I went to listen to Michael Corballis, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Auckland University, who was discussing his book, The Wandering Mind. This book praises the benefits of letting our mind drift.

Professor Corballis is deliberately trying to balance an American study, which found evidence to suggest we are inattentive to the task at hand 46% of the time, and that during this inattentive phase we are less happy than when our mind is on what we are doing.
