A Selwyn woman’s battle over the placement of unconsented sewage air valves on her property and around the district continues despite a Selwyn District Council decision not to place the valves on her front lawn.

Nyki McQueen and her husband Jason built their dream home near Lincoln in 2012 knowing there was a council owned easement which ran along the edge of their front lawn.

However, they were shocked when council told them of plans to put two valves on the easement which would emit vapour from sewage pipes running under the ground, without going through

Dunsandel residents have given the nod of approval to detailed plans for their new community facility to replace the community hall which was demolished following the September 2010 earthquake.

At a public meeting held recently in Dunsandel plans were favourably received for the facility estimated to cost around $2.8 million.

Chair of the Dunsandel Community Committee Russell Dalzell said he was happy with the new design.

“It’s a multi-space facility which caters for small meetings right through to 350-seat functions.” Mr Dalzell said the community facility will be located near an existing sports centre on the south side of the town. The sports

centre which was built in 1984 will get a facelift as part of the building project.

“The new building and the sports centre will complement each other,” Mr Dalzell said.

With a $500,000 shortfall to fund the project the committee will be looking to do some local fundraising.

Mr Dalzell hoped the project would go out for tender in January 2015 with building to start in April or May. “It should take around nine to twelve months to build,” he said. ¢

Using creative ways to solve problems is something 13-yearold Madison Dalgety of West Melton thrives on as she proved recently as part of a winning team at problem solving competition in the United States.

Madison was one of six girls from St Margaret’s College to attend the International Future Problem Solving competition in Iowa which saw young people from all over the world gather to test their problem solving skills on scenarios based on mock cities in the future.

“We had to do a lot of research and explain every decision using the research,” Madison said.

“We were able to problem solve using solutions that had never been thought of before. We got to really think outside the box.”

The road to Iowa involved winning at both the regional and national level at competitions in New Zealand.

At the international competition the St Margaret’s team won the section for best action plan drama where they acted out how they would solve their city’s problem.

“We were very excited when we won. We were gob smacked. We got to perform our drama at the closing ceremony in front of everyone from all the different sections,” Madison said.

Once the competition had ended the girls spent a few days in New York where they attended a stage show,

Battle over sewage valve continues “The vents are not going ahead on our property and ECan has admitted these valves need consenting. However, ECan won’t do anything about them even though they are legally required to,” Mrs McQueen said.

“SDC is proposing to put the valves on our driveway at ground level but run pipes under the ground from the valves venting the gases on council land about 250 metres from our home. This is much more acceptable but only if they have the correct consents in place backed up with proper odour assessments. We are still waiting to find that out.”

ECan has reimbursed the McQueens for costs associated with fighting the valves, asking the couple to sign a letter acknowledging that an ECan staff member had made an error of law and accepting the matter was settled.

“We would not sign full and final settlement as that means we cannot take action against them for the other unconsented valves in the district,” Mrs McQueen said.

Mrs McQueen said meetings with government appointed ECan Commissioner Peter Skelton had been unsatisfactory.

“Peter Skelton says I am on a crusade, and maybe I am but I believe I have a

moral obligation to make sure no one else has to go through what we have.”

Council wants zero road fatalities u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Selwyn councillors have voted for a road safety strategy which aims for zero deaths on the district’s roads.

The strategy, called ‘Vision Zero’, aspires to reduce the number and severity of accidents, according to Selwyn District Council’s transportation asset manager Andrew Mazey.

“While this is ambitious, it reflects what is ideally sought considering the seriousness of the consequences if we do not try our best to achieve it,” Mr Mazey said.

Since 2009 the number of serious casualty crashes has risen from 19 to 44, with poor vehicle handling, poor road observation, and failing to give way or stop at intersections as the main causes of accidents.

Mr Mazey said the strategy will target youth and elderly drivers, safety of school students, intersection, speed and alcohol crashes as well as light vehicle safety. ¢

Cricket legend returns New role for u by Kent Caddick

New Zealand cricket legend John Wright is returning to his old stomping ground to take part in West Melton’s 150th year celebrations over Labour Weekend.

Mr Wright, who was born in Darfield, will be the guest speaker at a Mix and Mingle event at the West Melton rugby club rooms from 5.30pm to 7.30pm on Saturday, October 25.

The opening batsman, who has coached both New Zealand and India, attended West Melton Primary School as a youngster and played club cricket for the Kirwee Cricket Club.

West Melton’s 150th Celebrations committee spokesperson Nicky Parker said they are delighted Mr Wright has accepted their invitation to speak at the Mix and Mingle.

“To have such a well recognised personality attend this event is fabulous and I expect it won’t be just the cricket fans who will want to hear him speak.”

However, she advised those who are keen to hear Mr Wright speak to get their early as there is limited seating.

Mr Wright made his international debut for New Zealand in 1978 against England. During his career, he scored over 5,000 test runs at an average of

Lincoln professor Lincoln University professor of environmental management Ken Hughey has been appointed to the newly created position of Chief Science Advisor with the Department of Conservation.

The new role, commencing in December, will involve Professor Hughey working three days per week for DOC, and for a twoyear term.

Core responsibilities of the position include providing DOC Director-General, Lou Sanson, with advice on policy matters, strengthening networks with other science advisors across the public sector, and taking a lead role in DOC’s contribution to the National Science Challenges and natural resources management in general.

Mr Hughey said he was grateful to DOC for the opportunity to work on enhancing conservation policy in New Zealand. “New Zealand has some unique challenges in this space, but also some  Lincoln University’s Ken Hughey is taking a top advisory role at DOC tremendous opportunities.

“I’m very much looking forward in a variety of management and to contributing toward ensuring New research roles.

He is currently an active member Zealand remains a world leader in conservation, and demonstrating of the Hurunui Waiau Water Zone the value of conservation for a Management Committee, the Waihora Ellesmere Trust and the newly prosperous future.”

It was a gathering of the Deans clan at the Selwyn Gallery in Darfield last Friday night for the opening of an exhibition of the life and work of Austen Deans.

Curator Gillie Deans put together the tribute exhibition to her late relative, looking at his artistic career across the decades.

For a small gallery she managed to pack in a large variety of Mr Deans’ work in watercolour and oils — from an early watercolour painted when the

artist was just 19-years-old, through to works done overseas when at war, and then later still at his home at Mt Peel, South Canterbury.

The exhibition runs until October 30 and includes a floor talk by Gillie Deans on October 11 at 11am. ¢

Jeff Robinson and Lee Carmichael are spreading their love of bees by setting up and managing hives on rural properties in Selwyn.

Jeff and Lee met through the Christchurch Hobbyist Beekeepers’ club.

They went into business selling honey at markets around Canterbury under the label Alpine Forest Honey, but soon a new bee venture came along.

“I could see a real need for people to have bees in their gardens for pollination,” Lee said.

With the impact of the varroa bee mite on the New Zealand bee population, wild bee populations have been reduced.

Beekeepers are able to control the varroa mite under Department of Primary Industry guidelines and as a result, those insects in the care of beekeepers form more successful colonies.

Without bees a huge variety of plants cannot pollinate, so the couple took it upon themselves to do their bit to bring back bees, as Lee explains: “People would come and see us in the market to buy honey and they would say they don’t see many bees around anymore. I realised we need more bees in the garden and to educate people about bees.”

They set up their boutique bee business called Backyard Honeybees where property owners pay a yearly fee to have a hive on their property which is managed and maintained by Jeff and

Lee. In return property owners get the benefits of having bees to pollinate their gardens and also the joy of eating honey produced from their own property.

West Melton property owner Mark has been hiring bee hives from Jeff and Lee for the past two years.

“It’s made a big difference in the garden. Since we’ve had the bees there’s been a lot more flowers and more strawberries and tomatoes. Our Blackboy peach tree has had the biggest crop ever,” Mark said. “Last year I saw a

bee hatching and excuse the pun, but it gave me such a buzz,” he said.

Meanwhile, things are busier than ever with Jeff and Lee’s bee business as people catch on to the benefits of having bees on their property.

“For us it’s more than money. It’s the lifestyle,” Lee said.

“When we harvest the honey we leave enough in the hive for the bees to eat.

There’s enough for the bees, enough for the person who has the hive, and a little left for us to sell.” ¢

Caring for your pet lamb u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

It’s pet lamb season and many people who live in the country are tempted to get woolly friends for their children to show off at pet day or to use as a grass cutter for their lifestyle block or section.

A quick scan of the livestock section on Trademe attests to the popularity of lambs as pets with prices ranging from between $20 to $50 for what was once an item a farmer was grateful to give away.

As with all animal ownership, taking on a pet lamb needs to be undertaken with knowledge and the appropriate resources.

Livestock expert Dr Clive Dalton advises prospective pet lamb owners to ask the farmer if the lamb received

colostrum from the mother sheep, or another source, before being orphaned.

“This first milk from the mother protects the young animal against the many infections it will meet in its early life,” Dr Dalton said.

“If you cannot get a satisfactory answer to the question, then don’t have it, as you’ll have problems rearing it, and it will stand a high chance of being unthrifty or of dying.”

Lambs will need tailing and possibly castrating.

They will also require vaccinating.

Some farmers will perform tasks such as these before hand over, but the chances are you will need to factor in a trip to the vet on occasion.

To get ready for your lamb you will need some supplies including a suitable fenced area with a place where young lambs can keep warm and dry in cold weather. They will also need milk powder, bottles and teats.

When making the milk solution be careful it’s not too strong as this can cause upset tummies and scouring which is like lamb diarrhoea. Don’t over feed lambs as this too can lead to digestion problems.

When preparing the bottle be conservative when you cut the end of the teat off, because if you make the hole too big the lamb will get too much milk too quickly, which again can lead to sore tummies and scouring.

If your aim is to raise your lamb as a pet then Dr Dalton said feeding time is the best time to bond with your lamb.

“Use the bottle as way to teach the lamb or kid to follow you. Remember it is building up an association of your voice with food, so calling it at feed time is

vital to bonding,” Dr Dalton said. Pellets can be introduced into your lamb’s diet at about three to four weeks and you can encourage your lamb to eat these out of your hand, which is a trick that can be useful when teaching them to lead for pet day.

“You can never do enough training.

Set up a ring at home and have a test run regularly. Take your time in training. Learn one thing at a time.

Reward it after a success with some feed pellets.”

A Selwyn man has taken his love of gardening to extremes many would only dream of, making artistry on a grand scale out of flowers and trees.

David Hobbs of Broadfield Garden on Selwyn Road started his 4.8 hectare work in progress in 1993 in an empty horse paddock.

He had always been interested in gardening and had small plots on urban sections prior to Broadfield, but this was

the first time he’d started from scratch on such a large scale.

The formally designed New Zealand garden consists of 20 small plots with different themes, grouped together and framed by a 1.5 kilometre green totara hedge.

Fifteen years ago David opened to the public, offering guided tours or the option of letting people discover the wonders for themselves.

Australian visitors were particularly impressed with the lush green expansive lawns and experienced gardeners liked the content, including some rare plants.

“It’s nice to get feedback about what you’ve done. Otherwise it’s like a painter painting pictures and then keeping it to themselves,” David said.

He sources his plants from all over New Zealand through specialist nurseries and despite Broadfield’s impressive size, refers to it as a hobby to come back to on his days off as a section development landscaper.

“I love gardening and being outside.

It’s great to be making something with my hands and having an artistic input,” he said.

Two people help him maintain the project. In the past he has hired horticulture students to help but he says he prefers older people. “My best worker is 71-years-old and has been here for 11 years.”

With over 30 years’ experience he says he’s learnt most from the mistakes he’s made.

He also does a lot of reading and plans on continuing developing the property.

“I’ll keep going as long as I’m able.”

Getting to the heart of artichokes u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Things are getting so busy in the garden and before you know it we will be hitting the silly season of end of year breakups and parties.

I have sometimes seen artichokes mentioned in recipes, especially Mediterranean cuisine but had never tried one until recently as I really had no idea what to do with them. In my quest to try out new foods I challenged myself to get to the heart of artichokes.

There are several different kinds of artichoke, but for the purpose of this article we will look at the globe artichoke.

The globe artichoke is actually a variety of thistle and the part people eat is the bud of the flower before it fully blooms.

The edible part of the bud is known as the heart, which consists of many immature florets bunched together.

An ancient food of the Greeks and Romans the artichoke is nowadays most abundantly grown in Italy, Egypt, Spain and Peru. They are popular for

their antioxidant and nutrient benefits.

Globe artichoke leaves are used for medicinal purposes to help with digestion and heart burn and may help lower cholesterol.

Globe artichokes are not meant to be eaten raw. They can be boiled, steamed, baked and stuffed. In Italy you can get artichoke hearts preserved in oil and sold in jars. Ideas for these marinated delights include using them as pizza topping (fantastic with mozzarella, red onion and fresh rosemary), as a topping for crostini (try toasting thin slices of French bread and spreading with ricotta, artichoke, lemon zest and flaky salt), or sliced and added to risotto.

Another easy use is folding artichokes into a hot omelette with mushrooms and feta cheese.

They can be eaten as part of an antipasto platter, or this time of year roasted alongside large diced potatoes tossed in olive oil, fresh herbs, salt and pepper.

If you are able to get hold of raw globe artichokes you can cook these in a number of ways. One method is to cut off the outer leaves and steam or boil the rest in water with a little lemon juice. While the artichoke heart is the most prized part of the artichoke some people eat the cooked young leaves and artichoke stem, so you can include these in the pot too. Once cooked this way you can eat them dipped in melted butter or hollandaise sauce. My first time, I introduced them to the family

as a secret ingredient which they had to find and make a guess as to what it was.

I had a jar of artichoke hearts preserved in brine from Italy and I included these in the oven pan with other roast vegetables including pumpkin, garlic, onion, carrot, and Brussel sprouts. Their rich flavour made it easy to find amongst the vegetables on the plate, though no one knew what they were.

A final note, you may need to introduce artichokes slowly to your family. Mine did not appreciate their first try, but by adding smaller amounts and building up over time the artichoke is now finding a place in our family’s cuisine. ¢

Kate’s kitchen: A summer treat u by Kate Brunner

Making your own ice cream is easy and gives you the opportunity to create your own flavours as well using fresh and natural ingredients.

Along with the Betty Crocker cookbook, my husband Doug arrived in New Zealand with a classic ice cream maker consisting of a wooden barrel and inside a metal container with paddles.

To make the ice cream, the space between the inside of the tub and the metal canister is filled with layers of ice and rock salt. While turning the handle which rotates the paddles and churns the ice cream, the salt slowly melts the ice and the resulting cold temperature

freezes the mixture to make ice cream. The ice cream is made from a custard consisting of eggs, sugar, cream and milk.

It involves a bit of fluffing about but the ice cream is unbelievably delicious.

I have moved on to an electric ice cream maker and all the churning is now done at the flick of a switch.

This weekend I fancied a bowl of ice cream and this is what I did. ¢

Vanilla ice cream

Ingredients: 1 cup of milk — full fat (don’t bother with skim — this is ice cream) 2 cups of cream 1 vanilla bean, split with seeds scraped out 6 egg yolks 2/3 cup of caster sugar Method: Put milk, cream, vanilla bean and seeds in a saucepan and heat on medium until hot but not boiling.

Put the egg yolks and sugar in a bowl and whisk until thick and pale.

Take the vanilla bean out of the milk/cream mixture and slowly pour over the egg yolks and sugar, whisking well to combine.

Pour the mixture back into the saucepan and stir over a low heat until the custard thickens and coats the back of a spoon. This takes about five minutes.

Then set it aside to cool before placing it in the ice cream maker.

Alternatively pour into a container and freeze, taking out every hour and beating before putting back to freeze.

Do this three or four times to achieve a creamy consistency.

What to do with the leftover egg whites? Well, I made meringues.

Put a scoop of ice cream on top, drizzle over melted chocolate and sprinkle with almonds.

is possible and to do this it requires careful thought and planning.

The process I find that works with my clients is as follows: •• Acknowledge that a change needs to be made •• Set attainable goals •• Identify the triggers to unhealthy habits •• Conduct a training programme specific to your goals.

When a client comes to me for a programme they would have already acknowledged they need to make a change.

I often get them to write their goals down in a diary that they will view every day. It is important that goals are written down as it makes a person more accountable.

If you have a long term goal that is too ambitious at first, it can often result in failure.

For instance there is no point having a goal to run a half marathon when you struggle to run continuously for five minutes. Goals must be challenging but achievable within four to six weeks. A more realistic goal would be to run three to four kilometres non-stop.

I recommend also setting weekly nutritional goals — eg to drink trim milk instead of blue milk. Setting a new

goal each week gives a regular sense of achievement and it encourages small lifestyle changes rather than sudden unrealistic changes similar to fad diets.

The next step would be to think about the triggers that prompt unhealthy habits.

Firstly identify each trigger for each bad habit. If you can clearly see what triggers you to sit on the couch and eat, then you can avoid it.

For example, if when you get home you usually place the keys on the kitchen bench, then go to the fridge and then sit on the couch. The triggers would be: placing the keys on the bench and opening the fridge. Next time you could try putting the keys in your pocket and then going outside for a walk. By doing this you have avoided the initial triggers of that unhealthy habit.

There are triggers for every habit you have, if you can recognise them early then you can plan to avoid them.

After six weeks (assuming that you have being following a good training programme), you would have achieved your health and fitness goals before Christmas.

Your new healthy patterns of action will feel more natural to do than not to do. You can either repeat the process until you have reached your long term goal or try to maintain what you have achieved. Don’t ever dop your guard as those old bad habits can quickly creep back in.

It is motivation that got you started but it will be habit that keeps you going. ¢
