There is only one new face around the council table and that is Tai Tapu farmer Grant Miller who comes into council for the first time in the Springs Ward replacing the retiring Lindsay Philps. No election was required in the Springs Ward as only three candidates stood for the three vacancies. Mayor Kelvin Coe, who this week begins his third term at the head of the

council table, saw off five challengers to retain the mayoral chains. with Hororata’s Dr Olive Webb the closest contender falling 435 votes short on election night. Mayor Coe said he was grateful for and humbled by the support he received. “As a whole I think the result is a solid vote of confidence for council, not only in councillors but also in the staff

and all the work they have done over the last three years. “Having said that, we cannot rest on our laurels and we have to maintain the focus over the next three years.” Mayor Coe has already indicated this will be his last term on council as by the end of the term he will have spent 21 years on council, nine of them as mayor.
