There is only one new face around the council table and that is Tai Tapu farmer Grant Miller who comes into council for the first time in the Springs Ward replacing the retiring Lindsay Philps.

No election was required in the Springs Ward as only three candidates stood for the three vacancies.

Mayor Kelvin Coe, who this week begins his third term at the head of the

council table, saw off five challengers to retain the mayoral chains. with Hororata’s Dr Olive Webb the closest contender falling 435 votes short on election night.

Mayor Coe said he was grateful for and humbled by the support he received.

“As a whole I think the result is a solid vote of confidence for council, not only in councillors but also in the staff

and all the work they have done over the last three years.

“Having said that, we cannot rest on our laurels and we have to maintain the focus over the next three years.”

Mayor Coe has already indicated this will be his last term on council as by the end of the term he will have spent 21 years on council, nine of them as mayor.

 Selwyn District Council rural fire units undergoing training in putting out forest and vegetation fires at the Darfield Domain under the supervision of council Ranger Alastair Hutt. The council’s rural fire units also respond to other emergencies such as structure fires and motor vehicle accidents.

‘Silty’, for a job well done

 Retiring Selwyn councillor Lindsay Philps holds a ‘Silty’ presented to him by Mayor Kelvin Coe at his final council meeting last week. A Silty is a brick made from compacted liquefaction silt gathered from Christchurch’s Hagley Park following the February 2011 earthquake. It was presented to Cr Philps in appreciation for his efforts in the formation of the Greater Christchurch Development Strategy.

The Selwyn Food and Wine Trail has been named as the best wine tourism service in the South Island Best of Wine Tourism Awards and is in the running for international recognition.

The Best of Wine Awards are run by the Great Wine Capitals Network and features world-famous wine regions like Bordeaux in France and the Napa Valley in the United States.

Selwyn’s food and wine trail provides tourists and local residents with the opportunity to visit over 30 wine and food producers in Selwyn. As part of the trail, people can sample wine and fresh local produce, and dine at cafes and restaurants.

Selwyn District Tourism Advisor Elizabeth Pitcorn said Selwyn is becoming increasingly well known as a fantastic wine growing area.

"Our high sunshine hours and low rainfall are ideal for producing top quality wines and fantastic fresh produce."

She said the Selwyn Food and Wine Trail has been extremely popular.

He said he was impressed by the number and quality of candidates right across the district and they should be congratulated for putting their hands up and wanting to be involved in their communities.

Overall almost 43% of eligible voters took the opportunity to cast their ballot, slightly up on the 2010 figure of 41.76%.

The highest turnout of voters occurred in the Malvern Ward with over 56% of eligible voters voting in the ward and community board elections.

Both standing Malvern councillors were returned with Sam Broughton, who was also the third highest polling mayoral candidate, almost 900 votes ahead of John Morten in second place.

In the Tawera subdivision of the Malvern Community Board election newcomer Kerry Pauling topped the polling with incumbent Bob Mugford second, and another incumbent Bill Frost missing out.

In the only other election to be held, all four sitting Selwyn Central Ward

New councillor up for the challenge  by Kent Caddick

Tai Tapu farmer Grant Miller is looking forward to his initiation into the workings of the Selwyn District Council and says he is ready for the challenge.

Mr Miller begins his first week as a Selwyn district councillor this week after being elected unopposed as a councillor for the Springs Ward, replacing Lindsay Philps who did not stand for re-election this year.

“I am not nervous about taking up the position but I do know it will be a steep

learning curve,” the 45-year-old first-time councillor said.

“I have had some experience in governance, serving on the Board of Trustees at Tai Tapu Primary School and have completed a governance course at Massey University.

 Tai Tapu farmer Grant Miller is the only new face around the Selwyn District Council table after the 2013 local body elections

Mr Miller, who describes himself as a ‘half glass full’ kind of person, said he had been considering standing for some time but had admired the work Lindsay Philps had been doing and didn’t want to stand against him.

“When Lindsay announced he wasn’t going to stand again I thought the time was right to put my name forward.”

Miller believes as a whole the Selwyn district is in good shape with great educational facilities like those at Lincoln, a developing commercial hub at Izone, and a strong farming sector.

“We need to ensure the huge growth the district is experiencing is well managed and there will be some

challenges in planning for that.” One of his personal areas of interest is in ensuring good quality drinking water for all communities across the district and admits amalgamation with Christchurch City may assist that.

“I certainly haven’t made my mind up about amalgamation and think there is not a lot of reason from a Selwyn point of view for it to happen.

“What I did see when Banks Peninsula amalgamated with Christchurch was some great progress on drinking water schemes for smaller communities.

These schemes are often expensive and small communities struggle to afford them.” 

The Selwyn Parenting Network was delighted by the turnout from families in the Selwyn district at its Family Fun Day held at the Lincoln Events Centre recently, With more than 500 people attending the event.

Everybody needs good neighbours  by Kent Caddick

This year’s Selwyn Neighbourhood Week kicks off on Friday, October 25.

Neighbour week give local residents an opportunity to get to know their neighbours, not just to develop new friendships but also to assist in responding to emergencies. Selwyn District Council’s Neighbourhood Support and Community Response coordinator Sue Jenkins said once you know your neighbours you are able to help each other in an emergency.

“It can also be a great way to develop new friendships and make

your neighbourhood a safer and more caring place to live.”

To support Neighbourhood Week, the Council has small grants available for neighbourhood get-togethers. Grants can to help host events like barbecues, picnics, or a neighbourhood fun day.

Many local organisations contributed to the success of day, which included pony rides with members of the Springston Pony Club and Selwyn Toddlers, a petting zoo supported by PORSE and bouncy castles for all ages.

Buttercup the Fairy enchanted young children, while volunteers from the local Girl Guides granted many face-painting wishes.

Nathan ‘The Mulletman’ Bonner entertained the crowd with his juggling and unicycle riding feats, providing humour for both the younger and older members of the audience, while Liz Weir captivated the younger ones with her naughty monkey, Mitch, and her wonderful ability to tell spelling-binding stories.

Connecting means better mental health

Dr Olive Webb of Hororata, a registered clinical psychologist, believes that finding connections within the community is vitally important to having good mental health.

The theme for Mental Health Awareness week held last week was ‘connecting with each other’.

“Isolation is one of the biggest enemies of mental health. We need to know our neighbours — keep in contact,” Dr Webb said.

“The earthquakes and recent storms prompted us to check up on each other

and be in touch. We must not lose that.”

“This is an area where country leads the town, and the new townships and subdivisions, especially in Selwyn need to put in some effort to establish connectivity between people and groups.”

An example of this is the Tai Chi group who meet weekly at the Glentunnel hall.

The group was set up by Hazel Wheeler of Sheffield 10 years ago because she felt Tai Chi was good for her and wanted to share these benefits with others.

The benefits to the group’s regular members go beyond physical. As Hororata resident Sian Lock-Moore explains, the benefits are also social.

“We catch up on each other’s do’s and don’ts for the week. It starts our week off. It gets you out of the home.”

Sixteen-year-old Hannah Oakley of Hororata has danced her way to victory at the 99th Annual Festival of Dance in Greymouth.

Hannah took home first place in the jazz championship and won the award for the dancer who shows the most enjoyment of dance on stage. “[Hannah is] an extremely hardworking and enthusiastic student. She has a very beautiful stage presence and portrays her love for dance very well to an audience,” Hannah’s dance teacher Tara Marshall said.

Hannah has had a very successful last few years dancing in competitions and sitting dance exams. Ms Marshall said to be eligible for the championship class

students need to have moved through novice, restricted and open classes.

“The dancer should be at a high technical level to be in this class.”

Hannah started dancing with the Tara Marshall Dance and Fitness Studio six years ago, when it was known as the Lisa Rophia Dance Studio, and has competed in Greymouth nine times.

“She is a wonderful role model for all my junior school and the girls all look up to her. I have her lined up to start taking some little dancers in the near future. 

Selwyn resident Yee-Ming Lin’s clay creations have earned her a finalist place in the country’s most prestigious ceramic competition, the 2013 Portage Ceramic Awards.

 Yee-Ming Lin’s work entitled My Blue and White Flower Vase is a finalist in the prestigious Portage Ceramic Awards

Ms Lin is one of six Canterbury artists and the only from Selwyn to be announced as a finalist for the awards. Her finalist work is called My Blue and White Flower Vase.

Tony Bond, Jane McCulla (both Lyttleton), Tatyana Meharry, Kim Henderson, and Janna van Hasselt (all Christchurch) will also compete for the coveted Premier Portage Ceramic Award which carries a prize of $15,000.

This year’s judge, Amy Gogharty from Canada said the finalist works were of a similar calibre to that selected for exhibition’s internationally.

“In all of the work, I looked for ambition, something that went beyond ordinary studio/gallery work and that seemed to appreciate this is a premier award.”

There are 60 finalist works selected from more than 200 entries which come from practising ceramic artists all over New Zealand.

The finalist works will be on exhibition at ‘The Silos’, Wynyard

Quarter in the Auckland Viaduct from, October 12 to 20.

Established in 2001, The Portage Ceramic Awards are New Zealand’s premier showcase for the ceramic arts. 

Community given chance to visit award winning farm The Canterbury Ballance Farm Environment Awards (BFEA) is inviting people with an interest in sustainable farming practices the chance to visit an award winning farm.

A field day will be held on October 18 at Craige and Roz Mackenzie’s Methven farm.

The Mackenzie’s were the national winners of the BFEA Awards. They also won the Canterbury Regional 2013 Supreme Award, as well as the Environment Canterbury Water Efficiency Award, and Ballance Agri-Nutrient Nutrient Management Award.

At the field day industry experts will also speak on a variety of topics including farm technology, soil composition and monitoring, biosecurity risks, resource use efficiency, hybrid seeds, and irrigation efficiency.

Craige and Roz Mackenzie said being a part of the Ballance Farm Awards was a rewarding experience and it is important for farmers to share what they do. “The awards are an excellent opportunity to showcase how we are

improving economic and environmental outcomes by integrating technology and by empowering the next generation across our business in arable and pastoral,” says Roz Mackenzie.

PGW expands irrigation business In a boost to its irrigation business unit, which almost doubled its profits last year, PGG Wrightson (PGW) has purchased Water Dynamics and Aquaspec from multinational company Pentair.

The company says the move will further assist farmers to establish community water irrigation schemes like the ones being proposed for Canterbury including the Selwyn region.

“These acquisitions will complement PGW’s irrigation business, which the company has built up over the last three decades. Our existing irrigation business unit is set to continue to achieve strong growth in the future,” says CEO Mark Dewdney.

The acquisition of Water Dynamics and Aquaspec, which have combined

revenues of approximately $14 million, will significantly expand the services PGW can provide to farmers and growers according to Mr Dewdney.

“Water Dynamics gives us an expanded footprint in parts of the country where we do not currently have a presence in irrigation.

Malvern celebrates Artweek

Ashburton artist Libby Baxter has taken out the premiere award at the 32nd Malvern Community Arts Council Artweek which opened last Friday night at the Darfield Recreation Centre.

Baxter’s work titled Harvest Time was a mixed media piece featuring separate small panels encased in an overall frame.

“This entry successfully holds a variety of different information together by using a strong grid format and the playful aspect of three dimensions,” Artweek judge Grant Branbury said.

“The harvest theme — text, embossing, etching and copying process, add layers to the theme. This is a work with a very contemporary feel.”

Second prize went to Lorraine Natusch of Darfield.

Other award winners were: EunSook Kim, Christchurch (Buddle Findlay Prize); Samantha Clyne, Nelson (Darfield Dental Prize); Jan Mitchell, Darfield ( MCAC Prize). Improving mobility through good nutrition Over the past 12 months I have been helping someone with limited mobility. She had a combination of very sore and stiff muscles combined with painful knee joints.

Subsequent MRI and other diagnostics were inconclusive. As a consequence she could barely walk and stairs were almost impossible.

In cases where there is no clear medical diagnosis I step back and use a process of elimination to find a starting place for nutritional therapy. The main source of her pain and stiffness seemed to be muscular though again MRI showed no structural muscle or joint damage. Additionally she was not on statin cholesterol lowering medication which is probably the most common cause of muscle problems that I assist with.

My goal then was to reduce inflammation throughout her body while adding nutrients that can improve muscle energy and therefore muscle function. Our body repair systems including our immune response and antioxidant systems are all nutrient dependent. We made some significant alteration to her diet and put her on a three month intensive supplement programme.

I started her on therapeutic doses of my multi antioxidant/ mineral/vitamin formula. We then added high doses of I think the best CoQ10 available starting with higher doses. With this we added solid Omega 3 Fish oil doses and my new joint formula again at higher initial doses. Within a few months she started to notice some progress. The improvements have continued to where she can now walk, bend down, bend her knees and use stairs with relative freedom. Most of the pain has now gone. Of course she is delighted and is now starting to get her old life back again.
