Appeal delays cell phone coverage  by Kent Caddick

The initial application from Vodafone was filed in 2011 and council determined the consent required limited notification allowing those closest to the tower to have their say on the application. A hearing was set down for November 2012 but Vodafone requested a delay to allow them to respond to a number of submissions including moving the tower further back, with the initial plan sitting it just 30m from the roadside.

West Melton residents could be without adequate cell phone coverage for another year following a decision to appeal a resource consent allowing Vodafone to build a telecommunications tower on the outskirts of the township.

The tower is part of the Government’s Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI) but will also allow, Vodafone, Telecom and 2degrees to provide improved cell phone coverage to the township. In September an independent commissioner approved

a resource consent application by Vodafone to the Selwyn District Council to build a 32m tower on private land on Halkett Road, with the tower being set back 130m from the roadside.
