p After four months of rehearsals, the curtains have risen on CentreStage Rolleston’s latest show, Beauty and the Beast, bringing people of Rolleston and the wider Selwyn community together for the performance. “After the success of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat last year and most recently Peter Pan JR, it was an easy decision to perform another show in Rolleston with the community wanting more in the way of entertainment in the performing arts,” says production manager Courtney Hyde. “There are 35 cast members and 40 people involved in the production team. Some are new to theatre, and some are new to Rolleston. It is a great way to find a group that has plenty in common. There are so many areas that come together to provide the magic that is seen on stage. The show runs until November 23 and tickets are available at centrestagerolleston.org.nz. “We have received exceptional reviews, and the cast are performing phenomenally well. We are very proud of the high standard of acting we are seeing.”

“It takes a village to raise a child, but an army is needed to help Nora,” said fundraising team member, Katie Fitzgerald.

“Nora’s Army have been fundraising to help facilitate her much needed and potentially life-saving CAR T-cell Therapy, which started on Monday, November 11.

We raised almost $47,000 thanks to people’s generosity at the recent Nora’s Army day and Auction Evening.”

The day at Clearview Primary began with an army camo themed mufti day, and all students received Nora’s Army dog tags. “NZ Army medics and an army vehicle visited the school for

“The Blind Foundation was recently renamed to Blind & Low Vision NZ to cover all sight issues as people losing their sight is far more prevalent than what people realise,” says Holly.

“I got involved through a Facebook post asking for volunteers to help collect for guide dogs in Rolleston. I work for Bayleys Real Estate and when I first joined they were a chief sponsor.”

Holly organises rosters ensuring volunteers have the materials they need.

“It is such a nice thing to do as it takes you out of your own world for the day. Even when it is cold you meet lovely people. Some can only afford 20 cents but it all adds up and they are generous within their means and we are grateful for every penny. I use my three labradors when collecting. Dogs seem to make people comfortable and they spend time with them. The Red Puppy

“Even when it was pouring rain he collects and people smile and trust him.

They were so excited to be responsible to hand out stickers. I highly recommend others try collecting as you are helping other people.

“There are two appeals, October and March, and we schedule around what time volunteers can offer, even just half an hour. You may be the only person someone has spoken to all day and it all makes a difference.” ¢

Boil water notices The Selwyn District Council has issued precautionary boil water notices for Doyleston and Arthur’s Pass.

The notices have been issued by the council after test results were received showing that E coli levels were above recommended levels in the towns’ water supplies.

A previous precautionary notice for Leeston has been lifted.

E coli is an organism, which can cause health issues. When a boil water notice is in place, the Ministry of Health advises that people should boil or treat all water from taps before drinking, brushing teeth or using it in food preparation. In addition, water used to make ice should also be boiled before freezing. Bringing water to the boil is sufficient to kill all bugs, and does not

require prolonged boiling, the ministry says. Water needs to be boiled even if the smell or taste of chlorine is present.

Water can also be treated by adding one teaspoon of household bleach for every 10 litres of water and leaving it for 30 minutes.

During boil water notices, employers should also make sure their staff are only consuming boiled or bottled water at work.

Residents should continue to boil water until notified on the council’s website that the boil water notice is lifted.

The notices are likely to be in place for several days. ¢

Glentunnel School students participated in various activities including interacting with the local fire brigade and exploring a vintage fire truck at their annual pet day on Friday.

“We had the Darfield and Glentunnel fire trucks here, and the children went for rides and tried on the gear to experience what firefighters do,” said principal Dion Stechmann.

“We had a lot of the older traditional style activities like creating a sand saucer or a miniature scene, which were judged by lovely community volunteers.”

The children presented a handwriting sample and created a gift bag or box from upcycled items with the theme being sustainability.

“The Roadside Glory project saw children bring plants from the roadside, which they made into a floral decoration.

Each class prepared kai to sell, and every child was given five tickets for $1 to purchase items. We had healthy food options such as fruit kebabs, popcorn, homemade ice cream and ice blocks.

We ran the day with Tuakana Teina,

where the older children buddy the younger ones, and they shared kai and helped each other throughout the day.”

Activities included hook a duck, nerf gun target shooting, the big dig out — a treasure hunt in a trailer of sawdust and bouncy castle.

“We also had Darfield Preschool come, and a huge array of dogs, cats, chickens, geckos, rats, ponies and lambs were on display. The children talked with the judges about their animal, its diet, name and what they enjoy doing.

The day ended with the annual cake and homemade craft auction. Thanks to our organiser Michelle Reid, more than 30 local businesses supported us with vouchers, items and discounts, and we raised more than $3,200. It’s the community working together, and we appreciate the support to help our school.” ¢

The Selwyn District Council’s building team has come in for praise following its two-year accreditation assessment.

“The students really embraced the day and teamwork by over 800 students and the staff was certainly needed to make a ‘Nora’s Army’ video message which we have online.

“We raised $7,750, which included a bat that was auctioned off by a Clearview student and legend, Nixon.

“We then held an auction evening at Pemberton Gardens and had the privilege to be joined by guest speaker David Downs, who is a cancer survivor and CAR T-cell participant.

“Celebrity chef Jax Hamilton was the MC, and our auctioneer was Mark McGoldrick from Harcourts. The evening

raised $39,000, which far exceeded our expectations. We are very grateful for each and every person who has supported our fundraising.”

Nora and her family are in Texas for five weeks for her treatment, which has now begun.

“We are so incredibly grateful for your time, donations and support for our darling Nora,” said Nora’s mum Elyse.

“Nora’s army has grown beyond our dreams, and you have helped take away a huge obstacle to getting our daughter what she so desperately needs. Thank you for opening your hearts with the hugest love.” ¢

Selwyn resident Maddie Collins has been gifted the use of the newly built Novotel Hotel at the Christchurch Airport to support her fight with kidney disease and her organ donation awareness campaign on Sunday, November 24.

The members of Hope Church Rolleston are busy getting ready for this year’s presentation of Carols in the Paddock.

“We didn’t have a carols event in Rolleston so last year we created an evening for people to celebrate Christmas and it was a lot of fun,” says Pastoral assistant Tana Reynolds.

“We get so much support from the community — this is our chance to show how much we appreciate them.

Through her donor awareness plans, we have received an incredible amount of letters from people saying because of her, they have become organ donors and this has helped in her fight

Solar power has been talked about in terms of the future since the 1960s, but the message here and now is clear — it’s coming into its own as mainstream uptake increases. Just like the automobile, mass demand has begun to demand mass supply, and that means mass investment in massive new leaps forward.

The first thing solar suppliers want you to know is that today’s solar power is not the weaker, less useful system from those early years. It’s already a viable solution to get off the grid, to supply energy to far-flung areas, and to augment existing systems for both economic and ecological reasons. Using that car analogy again there’s research and development in the works, which

will crank the power up to Formula One levels.

There are three core components to a solar system, and all three have been the subject of vast pushes in research.

Take, for example, the University of Toronto, Canada, where scientists have developed new, tiny light-sensitive particles called colloidal quantum dots. These are a breakthrough, as

semiconductors of this kind could not be used outside the lab before. This one innovation could add a healthy eight per cent boost to solar panels’ efficiency. British researchers have high hopes for gallium arsenide, a material, which could make existing photovoltaic systems three times more efficient.

A solar unit is nothing without its batteries, and the best news here is that an arms race of battery tech has broken out in the field of electric vehicles.

Batteries have become smaller and more capacious, as evidenced by the rise of drones, e-scooters and e-bikes as well as cars like Tesla’s Model X

and BMW’s i8. Research is ongoing into incorporating batteries into the solar panel itself for more efficient production and compact deployment, as well as the use of molten inorganic salts to store energy. Better battery controllers are also now available, increasing the lifetime and efficiency of storage systems.

The future looks exceptionally bright for solar power, but why wait? Systems that can save you money and also contribute to saving the planet are out there now. It’s no longer a case of being an early adopter — it’s a case of not being left behind.

Future technologies War declared on flying pests Deadlier than all the spiders, sharks and tigers put together and more annoying than the most repetitive pop music Christmas carol remake. Mosquitoes have been on humanity’s ‘least wanted list’ since we first gave up on caves as real estate. Now there are new ways to deal with the flying bloodsuckers — but not all are created equal.

The bad news seems to be that sound-based apps for your mobile, which claim to drive away insects are hopeless. Both the BBC and research by computer magazine Macworld suggests that the concept seems scientific but that the results are negligible. That’s not to say that technology hasn’t been working on better ways to stop the little pests.

Insect Shield is a clothing company who design and create wearable mosquito repellant couture. Trousers and shirts, which are imbued with natural permethrin by this US company have been proven by that country’s very particular FDA and EPA agencies to drive away fleas, ticks, mossies and midges — among others. They claim that the charge of anti-insect goodness lasts 70 washes, and if you live in the States, you can even post them your favourite clothes to be treated. Coming soon to New Zealand, we hope.

Another repellent, which goes above and beyond the usual is called the

ThermaCELL. Available via Amazon, it clips to your belt or is fitted into a lantern for camping. Once heated up, it creates a ‘bubble’ of no-fly-space for mossies, thanks to a synthetic chr ysanthemum-derived repellent chemical that’s harmless to us, but hated by flying pests. For those who want to see them fry, the old-fashioned blue-light ‘zapper’ has also been given a tune-up with modern LED technology, making it more cost-effective to run. The ultimate mosquito trap might just be the Mosquito Magnet.

This gas-powered trap lures the little vampires in with carbon dioxide bait that mimics human exhalation.

It turns out, that’s how they track us.

When they come too close, they are sucked in by a vacuum to die in an inescapable chamber.

While these solutions are large (and have very United States-centric names like the Commander, the Patriot and the Independence), they are proven to be able to clear out a whole back yard and

slash mozzie populations long term. The only better solution? Literally, breed allmale swarms of mossies then irradiate them with x-rays — so they are sterile.

In its infant stages, the newly established Rolleston Rotary Club is a group aiming to reach the younger generation.

“We are wanting to help with community-orientated projects by providing guidance and volunteering for anything we can,” says club president Amanda Van der Klay.

“With the support of other Rotary organisations in the district, we want to change the face of Rotary and bring into the present age, with the different needs nowadays.

Veterinarian aid for wildlife VetEnt has recently teamed up with animal health company, Zoetis, to sponsor a Vetscan VS2 (NGA model) to be donated to the South Island Wildlife Hospital. It’s a technological breakthrough, which will help save the lives of injured and sick native birds.

With this machine, Dr Pauline Howard and the team at the wildlife hospital can now run a biochemistry panel to access a bird’s health with as little as 0.3ml of blood and receive the results in 15 minutes! It will make all the difference for the hospital’s team of staff and volunteers, who have been working since 2014 to support the South Island’s population of native birds and other wildlife.

It’s the only facility of its kind in the region, making this hospital the front-line care facility for many species only found in the South Island.

The stress, strain and time elapsed sending injured wildlife north to other specialist clinics are now a thing of the past, meaning better outcomes for creatures admitted to the hospital’s care. The South Island Wildlife Hospital is a non-profit facility, supported by many generous

community organisations and businesses. The team agree that having expanded blood analysis capabilities is a significant step forward, which may have proven impossible without help. An outstanding team of volunteers including veterinarians, vet nurses and others with an interest in New Zealand’s wildlife do it all here, from manning the phone through to working in the lab, feeding rehabilitating ‘patients’ and heading out on wildlife rescues.

All will benefit from this new tech.

VetEnt offers a big round of applause for Rose Gallagher, the volunteer coordinator at the South Island Wildlife Hospital, and Sharon Foor for seeing the need and spotting the opportunity to ask for the machine. They and Zoetis hope that the new Vetscan VS2 helps save many lives as it goes into active service.

Reduce your NPK fertiliser cost by 50%

IT IS understood that growing almost anything increases your soil acidity or lowers the soil’s pH. While Aglime easily corrects acidification the final target pH level for optimum nutrient availability is and always has been a moving target.

The absolute building blocks for growth such as Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Calcium, Sulphur and Magnesium, are not even close to their peak availability at a pH of 5.5 as shown in the table below.

As you can see a pH at 5.5 seems inefficient and illogical.

However, a pH between 6 and 6.5 increases availability exponentially and even starts peaking across many nutrients.

WHAT IS THE OPTIMAL PH AND WHY?

Your soil’s pH is one of the

key drivers in making nutrients available to the plant.

With a pH that is too low (< 5.5) trace minerals such as Aluminum become available which can heavily diminish growth or even kill crops. While the general consensus is that a pH of 5.5-5.8 is ‘good enough’, the science just doesn’t back this up.

“One aspect that has baffled us for years, is the apparent disconnect between fertiliser application and the availability or efficiency of the very nutrient being applied due to soil acidity.“ Almost every element of a fertiliser is represented in the nutrient availability table. When you are spending good money on fertiliser, you should be concerned if your advisors aren’t ensuring that the nutrient you are applying is at, or near, maximum availability. If they are not, you need to ask yourself why not? Maybe they have a vested interest in selling more fertiliser?

One of the fastest ways to neutralise soil acidity and increase pH is to apply lime. Liming is relatively cheap, especially when you consider that a shift in pH could potentially double the efficiency of a fertiliser in both the short and long term. The fertiliser efficiency table indicates this point and goes some way to show how a capital investment in lime may affect your overall and ongoing annual fertiliser spend.

NOT ALL LIME IS CREATED EQUAL

As a rule of thumb 1 tonne/ha of high quality Aglime will raise the pH by 0.1 pH unit. Therefore a 6 tonne/ha application is required to increase the pH from 5.7 to 6.3.

To maintain the optimum pH of 6.2-6.5, maintenance applications of at least 500kg per annum will be required.

The above rates are based on high quality Aglime – that means a lime equivalency or ‘as delivered’ Calcium Carbonate content of 90% or greater.

The particle size should meet New Zealand Aglime standards of 50% passing 0.5mm and no more than 10% passing 2mm to allow good even spreading and

consistent long term release into the soil. Consider solubility and ensure you are dealing with a limestone resource that has been proven to lift pH as expected. Talk to a few neighbours, they will know the history.

Keep in mind that many lime companies can create specific lime and fertiliser/mineral blends prior to dispatch to make your annual applications even more cost effective.
