During a week of beautiful weather heading into the weekend event, the balloons delighted local communities as they flew en masse over the Selwyn district to the Night Glow event area at Hororata Domain.

However, on Saturday the skies turned grey forcing the Night Glow to be postponed. The rain stopped Sunday afternoon as gates opened and 10,000

people were treated to a fun-filled festival and spectacular performance from 12 balloons.

“So many people have worked around the clock to make the Hororata Night Glow come to fruition,” event manager, Cindy Driscoll said.

“The weather challenged us, but we always believed the event would happen. Our weather team did an

amazing job predicting how things were going to unfold.”

She said making the call to postpone was a difficult one.

“Our decision was based on providing the best chance for the balloons to perform their show and this proved to be the right one. continued on page 13 …

He was among students from Haeata Community Campus and Middleton Grange School who turned out to celebrate National Biomechanics Day at Lincoln University recently. The event was held simultaneously in universities across New Zealand, as a way to expose secondary school students to hands-on learning activities relating to biomechanics research. The youngsters worked with Lincoln sports science experts to measure their agility and muscular power production, using state-of-the-art equipment at the university’s recreation centre.

The competition, which is often referred to as the ‘Oscars’ of the meat industry, has been running for three decades now with the titles being highly sought after by competitors.

Head judge, Matt Grimes, has been involved in the competition for 14 years and said the highly-skilled butchers we have in New Zealand can be partly attributed to events such as these.

“The competition provides a platform for butchers to display their skills, which are then passed on to their peers, so essentially a win-win for everyone in the industry not to mention Kiwis who end up buying more innovative and creative products,” Mr Grimes said.

NZ first for local prison  by Mike Isle

The first prisoner in New Zealand to achieve The Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award at Gold level has been presented with his award by Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis inside the Youth Unit of Christchurch Men’s Prison near Rolleston.

Two other young offenders, who have yet to fully complete the Gold Award, were presented with Gold Sectional Certificates; two more received Silver Awards, while six received the Bronze Award.

Karen Ross, New Zealand national director of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, said the awards challenged young people.

“They challenge them to get out of their comfort zones and learn a new skill, give service to their communities, take part in an adventure and get physically active. They not only teach them practical skills like teamwork and communication, but they also challenge them on a personal level — in ways that build identity, confidence and selfesteem,” she said.

Joe (not his real name), who received the Gold Award, agrees, saying: “I’ve got a different state of mind now, and I’m

thinking more positively about my future.

When I get out, I want to be a role model for my niece and nephew — and my own kids one day — and talk to them about what they can achieve in life.”

And that is exactly the objective of Chris Allan, whose Joshua Foundation administers the award in Christchurch Men’s Prison Youth Unit with funding from Kiwi philanthropist Michael Friedlander.

“A key for the Joshua Foundation is to ensure that young people have a positive and realistic self-image — they will know and accept their own strengths and weaknesses and be more aware of their own potential,” Mr Allan said. 

Lincoln graduate hot property

Lincoln University land and property graduate Anna Radovonich has taken out this year’s Property Institute of NZ Student of the Year award.

The Property Institute of NZ (PINZ) award recognises the top graduating student in Lincoln’s bachelor of land and property management course.

Ms Radovonich said it was “an absolute honour” to receive the award.

Property is in the blood for Anna, whose father John Radovonich, a former hockey Olympian, completed a bachelor of commerce at Lincoln in the 1980s.

John Radovonich was captain of the New Zealand men’s hockey team and played for the Black Sticks at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

He is now a shareholder and director of FordBaker, Christchurch’s largest privately owned independent valuation and property advisory company.

Anna has followed in her father’s footsteps in more ways than one, attending Lincoln on a hockey scholarship from 2015 to 2017.

Since completing her degree last year, Anna has been learning the trade at FordBaker.

“I’m picking up as much as I can about the profession before going overseas in June,” she said.

The event took place as part of the Anzac Day service held at the memorial gates in the Greendale Domain.

The trust and its horses took a circuitous route to the domain to pass by several properties, which were homes to a number of local men who joined up after the outbreak of war in 1914.

Chair of the Greendale Reserve Committee, John Clarkson, said have the Mounted Rifles trust made it a special occasion.

“This is only the second time, we have held an Anzac memorial in recent times and having the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Trust and their horses, made it a memorable occasion,” Mr Clarkson said.

“We would like to thank the trust for their presence and Ian Warren from Greendale for making it happen, as well as the Red Cross

Children from the local Greendale School presented purple poppies to the horses of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Trust in remembrance of the 10,000 New Zealand horses, which went to the war. Only four returned.

In Prebbleton the largest crowd for many years gathered around the District War Memorial to pay tribute to those who have served their country in the world wars and other areas of conflict.

Selwyn Deputy Mayor, Malcolm Lyall, led the service and read a message from New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to the Prebbleton community.

Mr Lyall thanked the volunteers from the Prebbleton Community Association who had organised the event and display and in particular, Daphne McAven, who was presented with a plaque for her work in commemorating the 100 years since WWI including helping to put

together the First World War exhibition in the Prebbleton Hall.

In Rolleston, around 300 people took part in the parade led by Ellesmere Highland Pipe Band along Rolleston Drive to the war memorial clock.

Chair of the Rolleston Residents Association, Leonie MacLachlan, who gave the reading at the service, was delighted at the turnout.

“The Rolleston Anzac service of remembrance has been organised by the Rolleston Residents Association for the last 34 years,” she said.

“We were thrilled by the community and community group attendance at this year’s event, which has grown every year. This year total attendance has been estimated at approaching 1,000.”

The Selwyn Youth Band and the Selwyn Community Choir were on hand to provide the musical accompaniment to the Rolleston service. 

Keeping in touch with Selwyn App Residents and visitors to the Selwyn District will be able to have all the information they need at their fingertips from Tuesday, May 1 thanks to the Selwyn App. The new players on the news and information scene in the Selwyn region, the app launches this week after months and months of preparation and planning.

A gathering of local identities gathered last night in Rolleston to recognise the launch of the app, which has been developed by the Ashburton Guardian Ltd who run the successful Ashburton App — which has now been operating for eight months.

Ashburton Guardian Ltd general manager, Desme Daniels, said that they saw potential in the Selwyn region and didn’t hesitate to look into bringing an app to the market.

“There was a gap in the market for daily news — we provide this in Ashburton, but we also have strong business links in Selwyn,” Daniels said.

“Our focus is on grassroots community news, filling the gap left by other daily newspapers. Whilst there are some established weekly news providers, we know that people now want news delivered daily — at the tips of their fingers — on smartphones.

“Over 89% of people want to access local news and information through their smartphones. The app gives users

both daily news along with community information, such as local events, walk and cycle tracks, places to eat, drink and stay and much more.”

While developed in Ashburton, the Selwyn App will have a fully dedicated team including full-time journalist, Jonathan Leask who will be working closely with local schools, sports group, community groups and the Selwyn District Council to deliver great stories — which will be added to the app three times a day.

“I see the app as an exciting opportunity to provide community news daily to a bustling and growing district straight to your phone,” Leask said.

“It is unique, as the app delivers the local news and information directly to the audience on a simple to use platform.”

The app officially launches on May 1 and will contain eight great sections, jam-packed with information. This will be increased as more content is developed.

“We want the Selwyn App to be for the people of Selwyn,” Daniels said.

“So, we are wanting people to let us know what they’d like to see and if they have any interesting ideas for the app to contact us.

One of New Zealand’s foremost watercolourists and a local potter will be part of the latest exhibition at the Selwyn Gallery in Darfield.

Painter Bernadette Parsons and potter Allan Hooper along with Debbie Lambert will feature in the Oil and Water exhibition, which opens in the gallery on May 4.

Malvern Community Arts Council arts coordinator, Katrina Ellis, said a love of the natural environment, and an influence of spontaneity, threads the three artists together in the May exhibition.

Lincoln crushes Greenpark in opening round  by Kent Caddick

Defending champions Lincoln started the Selwyn premier netball season in the same form they finished last season’s competition with a big win over newcomers Greenpark B.

Lincoln was too good for Greenpark, which has two teams in the premier division, running out comfortable winners 73–34 in the opening round of this year’s competition. Lincoln is aiming for its sixth title in a row this season.

Last season’s beaten finalists Broadfield also recorded a big win, brushing aside the challenge of West Melton, 67–23.

The final match of the opening round was a more closely fought affair

between Greenpark A and Southbridge.

While Greenpark A took out the match 54–37, Southbridge was in the hunt for most of the match with Greenpark pulling away in the final quarter to register its first points of the season.

In the Premier two grade Rolleston started the season with a bang, thumping Burnham 71–17, while Halswell was a comfortable 51–16 winner over Lincoln B, and Southbridge B eased past Broadfield B, 44–28. 

Dr Geoff Malcom has previously worked in a small animal practice in Halswell and Lincoln, as part of Springs Ellesmere Veterinary Services — before moving to Vetent.

West Melton water expert recognised with award A West Melton man, who is one of New Zealand’s foremost experts in water management and irrigation, has been recognised with an award from IrrigationNZ. Dr Terry Heiler, whose career has spanned 50 years and has seen him working in more than 20 countries — is now retired and lives near West Melton.

Dr Heiler, was born in Australia and gained a civil engineering degree at the University of New South Wales. In 1967, he arrived in New Zealand.

He initially worked for the NZ Agricultural Engineering Institute where he built a team of soil and water researchers. In 1982, he was appointed director of the institute. It worked to introduce new irrigation technology to New Zealand like drip irrigation, and pioneer new computer-based design methods for storing flood run-off for irrigation.

In 1990, Dr Heiler established his own consultancy firm — specialising in natural resources. He carried out a range of local and international work for both public and private sector clients.

Dr Heiler also led the establishment of Lincoln International Ltd — a business enterprise tasked with marketing the research resources of Lincoln University and the wider agricultural community in the Lincoln area to international aid and development projects.

He has also served on the Landcare Research Board, and as chairman of WoolPro, Eco-link and Tectra and on the regional committee of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy.

He led Lincoln University’s expansion into commercial research and

development, transforming a number of organisations into LinLink, establishing Lincoln Ventures (now known as Lincoln Agritech Ltd). Dr Heiler left the university in 1993 to focus on international consultancy projects.

In 2006, he was appointed chief executive of Irrigation New Zealand.

At the time he joined IrrigationNZ — farmers, schemes and water user groups had no overarching organisation.

“The government and regional councils wanted to talk to one organisation about water policy issues — so there was a need for a national representative organisation. It also seemed clear that there was going to be more need to engage with scientific and environmental groups and IrrigationNZ allowed this to happen,” Dr Heiler said.

In 2013, Dr Heiler was awarded the Bledisloe Medal by Lincoln University.

This award recognises those who have made an outstanding contribution to their chosen field of expertise, advanced New Zealand’s interests, or brought credit to Lincoln University.

Dr Heiler said that in most areas of the world sorting out water allocation can be very complex — as rivers cross international borders.

“This means that New Zealand is much better placed to manage water than most other countries, however, we are still struggling to resolve many issues in the economic and environmental space.

Young farmers behind ploughing competition Selwyn residents are in for a treat this weekend with members of the New Zealand Ploughing Association and their machines, and horses, set to descend on Kirwee.

Held over two days, the ploughers will once again test their skills at the property of Jeff Cridge on Highfield Road.

Saturday’s event will be run by the Courtenay Paparua Ploughing Match Association, while the West Melton Young Farmers Club will step up to the plate to run the competition on Sunday, which is open to the public.

West Melton YFC chair, Rebecca Legat, said some of the country’s best ploughing skills will be on show.

“This is the second time we as a club have run the event in recent years,” she said. While the Courtenay Paparua PMA will be in charge of the judging for the event; West Melton YFC is in charge of the weekend’s administration and feeding both competitors

Cloud-based farm information system Selwyn-based dairy company Synlait Milk has partnered with farm software company FarmIQ Systems to provide certified Lead With Pride dairy farmers with a cloud-based farm information system.

Synlait’s Lead With Pride programme recognises and financially rewards suppliers who achieve dairy farming best practice, and guarantees the integrity of pure natural milk produced on certified dairy farms.

Synlait’s CEO and managing director, John Penno, said: “Lead With Pride enables our world-leading health and nutrition customers to differentiate their products as having absolute integrity and superior quality as well as being sustainably produced — critical in a competitive marketplace.

“Keeping records in the cloud creates the opportunity for data to drive timely, accurate and more informed decisions on-farm in a heartbeat,” Mr Penno said.

He said removing the need for paperbased records also brings benefits in terms of system efficiencies and greater access to information.

“It’s very easy to create data — but it’s much harder to do something valuable with it.”

He said as well as covering the subscription fee for the FarmIQ Dairy+ pack, Synlait is investing in development of the software to address specific Lead With Pride requirements.

“Ultimately, adding these features into Farm IQ’s system will further improve the transparency of our value chain and builds on our commitment to add value and differentiate milk

“The balloonists really wanted to perform not only for the crowd — but also for our wide community of locals and volunteers from both near and far.

They have been overwhelmed with the hospitality they have experienced this week. We are lucky to have Ballooning Canterbury based in our community as they have the experience to coordinate the Night Glow.”

Once the gates opened on Sunday, the public were given the opportunity to walk through a cold inflated balloon, climb in a basket and fire the burners, watch a special shaped balloon float above the grounds and learn the science behind hot air balloons with a display from the University of Canterbury.

“The festival surrounding the balloons was really special,” Mrs Driscoll said.

“Live music created a great vibe while people enjoyed the huge range of food, arts and craft stalls, the famous Hororata Pie and much more. Ten community groups took the chance to run their own fundraisers.

“Thank you to all the balloonists, partners, stall holders, suppliers and of course the huge team of volunteers who made this event possible.

“We have been humbled by the support we received from everyone who came, and even those who couldn’t. Our community has big dreams, and the Hororata Night Glow is part of us being able to achieve them,” she said. 
