 The well has run dry on the West Melton Millennium drinking fountain but Peter Stafford plans on springing it back to life in time for the town’s 150 year celebrations over Labour Weekend

The fountain which was blessed and declared open at a ceremony on January 1 2000 was funded by local Christian people as a way to mark the two thousandth year since the birth of Christ. “It was built by people of faith as a way of celebrating Christ’s birth and saying it’s alive, it’s real, it’s relevant,” Mr Stafford said. While the fountain watered the people of West Melton for around seven years Mr Stafford said it has since fallen into disrepair, largely due to vandalism.

Now he is seeking ideas and support from the community about relocating and repairing the fountain. “I want it to be used and functional. It should be able to be moved in one piece,” he said. The structure made from river stone from the Waimakariri and granite sourced from Christchurch was fixed onto a pre-stressed concrete pad. It was placed on private land which has since changed hands, on the corner of Weedons Ross and West Melton roads.

PROVIDING WATER SUPPLY SOLUTIONS TO THE CANTERBURY REGION FOR OVER 25 YEARS

At a public meeting on Monday evening it was decided to take a proposal to the West Melton Resident’s Association (WMRA) suggesting the association take ownership of the restoration project and ongoing maintenance. This would include investigating a possible new site for the fountain. The next WMRA meeting is on Wednesday June 11 at 7.30pm at the West Melton Community Centre and Mr Stafford encourages those interested in the project to come and have their say. 
