February 2018 smashed the previous record for the month; 94,302 people visited the Museum, a 24% increase on the previous record of 75,840 set in February 2017.

Museum director, Anthony Wright, said the recently closed exhibition, 50 Greatest Photographs of National Geographic, proved to be a real crowdpuller with locals and tourists alike.

“In the last week of the exhibition, 27,374 people visited the museum compared to 21,984 in the same week last year, when the Air New Zealand 75 Years exhibition,

was also drawing large numbers.

“More than 4,000 people visited the museum on both the Saturday and Sunday, many specifically to see the National Geographic exhibition.”

The Quake City exhibition has also been attracting record numbers since it relocated to 299 Durham Street North in September 2017, with 20,684 people having visited the exhibition in the last three months, compared to 15,178 for the same period last year.

The exhibition records the stories from the Canterbury earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. 

The annual fundraiser will this year be held on Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21, with money raised from the event going to assist former and current service men and women, and their families. Templeton RSA Poppy Day coordinator, David Sands, said many of their older members are willing, but advancing years make it very difficult for them to collect for extended periods.

“What we are looking for are people who could devote a couple of hours a day to man one of our collecting points, particularly in Rolleston,” Mr Sands said.

“We will give them training in what to do, what not to do and what they can

expect.” Mr Sands said the funds are distributed back into the region.

“The distribution of the funds is done by an independent body, so is transparent, and the funds can be used to help with medical issues like PTSD or perhaps for education purposes.”

He said they have a number of collecting points in Rolleston, which they need help with, but can also help people who want to be involved in collecting in other areas of Selwyn.

Pure Nutrition Ltd, a joint venture company formed by Ausnutria and Westland Milk Products, has commenced operation in the Izone business hub near Rolleston.

Pure Nutrition Ltd (PNL) is a standalone blending and canning company, which will can milk powders and other nutritional products sourced from Westland for Ausnutria and other customers.

The company was established through an initial investment by Ausnutria of $4.5 million cash, and the transfer to Pure Nutrition of land owned by Westland at its Rolleston site, which had a value of $3 million. Ownership is 60% Ausnutria and 40% Westland Milk Products.

Pure Nutrition general manager, Terry Wu, said the Rolleston plant has received all of its certifications from New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries and can now export non-infant formula to every country.

“Chinese registration for infant formula is pending and expected to be completed soon,” Mr Wu said.

“The factory opened with 24 staff, which is likely to expand, especially once we start processing for Ausnutria’s China market.

“The plant is capable of canning 30,000 tonnes of nutritional product per year, when running at full capacity.”

Ausnutria chairman, Weibin Yan, said the formation of the joint venture is an important milestone for Ausnutria and part of Ausnutria’s global expansion plan to access premium milk supply throughout the world.

“Pure Nutrition will be primarily responsible for the production of the Puredo series of products for Ausnutria, with the vision of building Puredo as one of the best formula milk powder brands originating from New Zealand.”

Westland chief executive, Toni Brendish, said the joint venture relationship was an important part of the partnership between Ausnutria and Westland. 

“In the first year of the club there were over 120 junior hockey players playing in 13 teams for Waikirikiri Hockey, of which 70% were new to the game.

“Due to the excellent junior half turf facility the Selwyn District Council built in Foster Park, Canterbury Hockey junior competition games were being played in Rolleston.

“I would like to thank the council for all their support in this venture and all the people in the club who have supported us in securing the affiliation with Canterbury Hockey.”

Canterbury Hockey chairman Mark Beatson said having a brand new club is an exciting event for Canterbury Hockey.

“It reflects the huge opportunity we are seeing from the new communities

developing in areas such as the Selwyn district and reflects the great work done by the dedicated and enthusiastic team involved in the club.”

In 2018, Waikirikiri Hockey will have in addition to the current teams Year seven and eight Kwik Sticks 11-aside boys’ and girls’ teams, Senior Division 3 (Year nine up to U18) boys and girls sides and Mid-Week Open men’s and women’s teams.

The club will be holding a couple of open days, which will also include trials for the teams. They will be held on Saturday, March 10 and Sunday, March 18.

Art is for the birds in Darfield

Youth Council gets a refresh

As part of its 20-year celebration, the Selwyn Gallery in Darfield has invited a group of artists who specialise in drawing, painting, and sculpting images of birds for its March exhibition.

The ‘Birds of a Feather’ exhibition will feature work by six artists: Kate Beatty (painting), Blanche Fryer (ceramics), Galina Kim (painting), David Lloyd (copper sculpture), Katrina McGettigan (acrylics) and Henry Turner (oil pastels and watercolours).

“Looking back, our exhibitions featuring birds have always been well received,” Malvern Community Arts Council chairperson, Philip Baldwin said.

“So we are particularly pleased to feature this popular subject in a variety of artistic styles and media.”

Blanche Fryer, said the source of inspiration for many of her sculptures and paintings is the environment and the birds, animals, insects, and fish that we share it with.

“It is very much a topic we have all been concerned with lately, because of the results we see of poor and shortsighted land use and farming practices in New Zealand, and Canterbury in particular with the poor state of our lakes, rivers, creeks, springs, and aquifers.”

charcoal, watercolour, and oil pastels.

He said he is passionate about environmental and conservation issues, and often uses the proceeds from art prizes and successful exhibitions to buy stoat traps to help save the birds he loves; including putting in a new trapping ‘fence’ line in the Bealey Valley in Arthur’s Pass.

The exhibition opened on March 2 and runs through to April 5. The Selwyn Gallery is open daily (except Mondays) from 10am to 4pm for the exhibition. 

Chloe and Ethan both attend Rolleston College, where representation on the Youth Council was particularly sought, while Taylin, from Dunsandel, attends Lincoln High School.

Youth Council chair, Paige Sullivan, said all three new members are great role models.

“We’re excited for the new and existing members of the Youth Council to continue contributing to Selwyn’s vibrant community,” she said.

“Projects on the radar include: the Selwyn Link bus service, What do YOUth think? consultations, and the very first Selwyn Youth Survey.

“We’re excited to brainstorm other ideas at our orientation weekend in Living Springs this month.”

Selwyn Youth Council held its first

meeting of the year in February; with meet-and-greets and planning for the coming year. A team-building trip was held, which involved games, a lunch and ten-pin bowling. Paige Sullivan said the Youth Council was proud to be able to continue to give back to the community through its discretionary fund.

“The Selwyn Youth Project Fund is available to people or organisations who would like to see youth thrive in Selwyn through events or activities, which contribute to youth well-being.

Applications are assessed at the Youth Council’s monthly meetings.”

Clearview’s cafe the place to meet

Synlait to open new $125 million plant

Clearview Primary has opened an onsite cafe as a place for staff and students to socialise, and even visitors to the school are welcome.

Called Five to Nine, the new cafe, which opened at the beginning of the 2018 school year, is described

by Clearview’s principal, Rob Rush, as a space for parents, staff, and students to meet, connect, and build healthy relationships in a relaxed and social environment.

“Through our cafe, we aim to create learning opportunities and life skills for our students, strengthen partnerships within and beyond our school community and to build innovation and enterprise,” he said.

“The cafe was built around the Maori value of manaakitanga, which means to be welcoming, hospitable and to show respect.”

Asked why a cafe had been chosen, Mr Rush said that many people like to catch up over the more relaxing offer of food and drink.

“We want to encourage our school community to visit our school and have a place where they feel welcome.

“Nine to Five is 100 per cent owned by the schoo,l and once the initial setup costs are covered, all profits from the cafe will go straight back into the

Mr Rush said the cafe would be open from 8.00am to 10.00am, Monday to Friday and also for school events such as cross-country, athletics and much more.

The name Five to Nine, is the time the school day starts and a play on the traditional working day: nine to five. 

Synlait Milk is partnering with Foodstuffs South Island to bring high-quality Canterbury milk and cream to the market, and is expected to spend $125 million in Dunsandel to do it.

The $125 million investment is an advanced dairy plant in Dunsandel, which the company says is aimed at delivering a state of the art liquid blending and packaging capability.

The plant will enable Synlait to produce fresh milk and cream for domestic and export use, and the ability to pursue a range of dairy-based extended and long-life consumer products in the future.

Synlait’s managing director and chief executive, John Penno, said the move was a substantial step toward Synlait’s goal of being a balanced and diversified business.

“We believe this opens up a new category –everyday dairy—and has the potential to both leverage our current position and explore new customers and markets,” he said.

Mr Penno describes the new plant and the partnership with Foodstuffs as strategic for both parties.

about making our farmers’ fresh milk available to everyone in the South Island, in partnership with Foodstuffs.”

Mr Penno said the fresh milk from Synlait will be packaged in Value and Pams branded products, which are available at New World, PAK‘nSAVE and On The Spot stores.

The new plant, which Mr Penno said as one of the most sophisticated fresh milk and cream processing facilities in New Zealand, is expected to go into production in 2019. 

Thousands flock to Children’s Day in Rolleston  by Kent Caddick

Selwyn families turned out in their thousands to enjoy what was on offer at the Selwyn Parenting Network’s annual Children’s Day festivities in Rolleston.

The annual event, which was held for the first time in Foster Park on Sunday, also celebrated Selwyn Parenting Network’s (SPN) fifth birthday.

SPN coordinator, Kate Webb, said they were delighted with how the event went with an estimated 2,500 children, parents and other family members turning up to enjoy the day.

“It had all the hallmarks of success from the outset with a committed team of volunteers and organisers, great community partners, a vast range of local sponsors and the most stunning weather.

“The feedback following the event has been so positive, with praise for an incredibly well organised event, which provided the community with the

opportunity to enjoy a free day of family fun, and most importantly, the chance to recognise how precious our whanau and tamariki are.

“Over 1,500 free sausage sizzles were lovingly cooked off and served by wonderful volunteers of all ages, who kept up with the growing queues in admirable fashion.

“Many families brought their picnic rugs down to sit and enjoy quality family time at the park, watching the free entertainment that included a magic show and an amazing dance routine by the wonderful StarJam group.”

Selwyn mayor, Sam Broughton, helped SPN cut its fifth birthday cake, while Selwyn MP, Amy Adams, was on hand to show off her hula hooping skills. 

Worm control expert big cricket fan  by Mike Isle

One of Lincoln University’s newer faculty members is more than happy to help local farmers with concerns about parasitic worms… or the Black Caps Dr Manjula T. Kularathna, a selfconfessed ‘cricket fan’, has joined Lincoln University to implement extensive research into nematology, the study of crop-damaging worms.

Originally from Sri Lanka, Dr Kularathna completed his PhD in plant pathology from Louisiana State University in America. Dr Kularathna said that during his postgraduate studies he was fortunate to be guided by two eminent nematologists, Dr Charles Overstreet and Dr Edward McGawley, who did ground-breaking research into nematode management on a variety of agronomically important crops.

“Their emphasis on understanding the effects of soil nutrients and soil texture on reniform nematode reproduction on cotton, has greatly improved management strategies in Louisiana,” he said.

“I will be looking to carry on their research here, and to help New Zealand scientists and local farmers understand and ultimately manage plant parasitic worms.”

Dr Kularathna said he is delighted to be living in New Zealand and particularly in Canterbury. He said the province catered to two of his great passions: science and cricket. 

Synlait Palmerston North is a partnership with Massey University and FoodPilot, one of the New Zealand Food Innovation Network’s four hubs.

The Palmerston North team will primarily concentrate on innovative dairy liquid product development, as well as supporting processes and technology.

Synlait currently has around 35 staff members working within the Research and Development Team, but the company said this would grow as Synlait Palmerston North ramp-up its operations.

Synlait is also looking to build a $260 million infant formula manufacturing plant in Pokeno, North Waikato, but the purchase of land for the plant will have to be approved by the Overseas Investment Office (OIO). 

The opening of Synlait’s new centre at Massey’s Manawatu campus in Palmerston North, comes on the heels of the company’s announcement of a new $125 million facility to be built at its Canterbury base at Dunsandel.

Managing director and CEO, John Penno, says the research centre will play an important role in developing innovative export-oriented cream opportunities to leverage Synlait’s upcoming advanced liquid dairy packaging facility, to be built at Synlait Dunsandel.

“We are serious about growing and applying our research and development expertise to maintain a competitive edge.

“While Synlait Palmerston North is focussed on dairy liquids, we have teams elsewhere working on nutritional powders, packaging and many other areas.”

Penno said Synlait plans to double its investment over the next two years, having committed around $7 million to research and category development in the current financial year.

“We’ve established an R&D centre in Palmerston North, and will be investing around $2 million on additional equipment for the FoodPilot facility, which can be used by others,” Penno said.

The vice chancellor of Massey University, Professor Jan Thomas, who opened the new research centre said the facility highlighted the important new relationship between Synlait and the university.

“The establishment of Synlait’s new research and development centre is an excellent example of industry and the university collaborating closely to achieve real, tangible outcomes,” Professor Thomas said.

“Strategic partnerships like these are vital if we are to start and grow new industries, create new jobs,

New Arts Administrator for MCAC The Malvern Community Arts Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Katrina Ellis to the position of arts administrator.

“Among a field of strong candidates who applied for the job, Katrina stood out because of her training as an artist and designer, as well as her skill in building relationships with clients—in our case, artists and the general public,” MCAC chairperson, Philip Baldwin said.

Katrina began her employment as the Selwyn Gallery prepared to hang its March exhibition, Birds of a Feather.

Mr Baldwin, said the arts council is sorry to lose its previous arts administrator, Rose Gerard, who is

shifting to the Mackenzie Country. She was a valued member of the MCAC organisation during her employment.

As part of its 20 year celebration, the Selwyn Gallery has invited a group of accomplished artists who specialise in drawing, painting, and sculpting images of birds for its March exhibition, Birds of a Feather.

“Looking back, our exhibitions featuring birds have always been well received,” Philip Baldwin said.

Held at the Lincoln Domain on Saturday, the event drew a crowd of around 10,000, which was well up on last year’s event, making it the biggest one day musical event to be held in Selwyn.

The biggest drawcard was legendary Aussie rocker Jimmy Barnes, but he was well supported by some of New Zealand’s best including: Andrew Fagan and the Mockers, Boh Runga and

Stellar, The Narcs and The Feelers.

One of the organisers, David Parlane, said there were around 2,500 people more than last year’s inaugural event and they learnt a lot from this year’s event, which they will get right for next year.

A TRANSPARENT AND ENJOYABLE BUILDING EXPERIENCE When you build with Reynolds Construction you know you are dealing directly with the owner of the company who will be building your home, which director Craig Reynolds says gives clients a distinct advantage over building with some of the larger group building companies.

“When you build with us you’re not dealing with a salesperson, you’re dealing with a qualified manager who will actually be doing the work.

You know you’re going to get an honest answer not a sales pitch,” he says.

Another advantage of building with an owner/ operator company is that the client is not paying for any large overheads.

Craig says this enables Reynolds Construction to easily compete on price with the larger group building companies. “Our work comes from word of mouth and recommendations from satisfied clients,” he says Reynolds Construction has been building new homes, and renovating and extending existing homes, throughout Canterbury for more than 10 years.

Craig has 30 years industry experience, completing his apprenticeship with his father here in Canterbury. He went into business for himself at the age of 20.

He heads a team of qualified and experienced tradesmen, who are known for their high level of workmanship. “Plus they’re all good guys,” says Craig. “They’re approachable, friendly as well as experienced and versatile tradesmen.”

They build a full range of homes, from the more modest up to high-end architecturally-designed homes. Craig works with many of Christchurch’s leading architects and has built over 300 homes in and around the region.

Reynolds Construction will price clients’ own plans.

They will also arrange architectural plans to be designed and consented ready for commencement.

Renovations and extensions are another speciality at Reynolds Construction. They work on homes of all description, from older character homes to modern houses, building and renovating in a style that meets the client’s requirements and is sympathetic to the style of the home.

Reynolds Construction is also one of the last companies involved with the EQC repair programme having completed over 200 repairs including multi unit projects.

Clients are kept fully informed throughout the building process. Reynolds will monitor the build continuously with a range of quality control check lists as the project develops.
