A horse riding accident at the Malvern A&P Show in Sheffield has left a young female equestrian competitor in Christchurch Hospital with a serious head injury.

Amy Stewart was thrown from her horse Eden Ivana while taking part in the show jumping competition at the show.

It appears the horse, which had to be put down, may have suffered a heart attack prior to Stewart’s fall. She was attended to by St Johns ambulance at the showgrounds in Sheffield before being airlifted to Christchurch Hospital with what were described as serious

multiple injuries by the St John’s Ambulance Service. A Christchurch Hospital spokesperson said Ms Stewart was in a comfortable condition.

Show president Paul Wright praised the emergency services and the show committee for the way the incident was dealt with.

“The team handled it very well. We’ve always discussed what would happen if

we needed to get a helicopter in there.

We had an emergency plan.”

He said the incident may be investigated by the Royal Agricultural Society which governs all the A&P associations across New Zealand.

Mr Wright said a silver lining to the incident was the inundation of people donating money at the Westpac Rescue Helicopter tent at the show. 

Top start to dressage career  by Kent Caddick

Teenage dressage rider Sophie Griffith of Burnham has had a great start to her dressage career taking out her category at the National Dressage Championship in Fielding on her horse Frangelico F.

The pair was also placed second in the prelim class at the championships earlier this month in which she was the youngest rider attending.

“I was quite shocked at winning my class as it was my first nationals,” the 17-year-old said.

“I had hoped to finish in the top six but to have the judges see that I have a future in dressage was amazing.”

Sophie has been riding since she was five and began to compete seriously around the age of nine.

She says she has been extremely fortunate to have Brugs Nicholls, another Burnham local, as her coach and mentor.

“She was the youngest rider in England to compete at Grand Prix level and now she helps me with my technique and how to train Frangelico, which she originally brought into New Zealand from Australia.”

DRUMMOND & ETHERIDGE

Like Sophie, Frangelico is a young competitor at this level being only fiveyears-old and the two have been riding together for two years after Sophie bought the horse off Nicholls.

“Frangelico has an amazing temperament, is hard-working and willing to give anything a go.”

Sophie and her family live on a lifestyle block near Burnham and this year has decided to be home schooled to allow her more time with her horse.

Sophie says she loved the experience of her first nationals.

“There were so many top class riders there, it was really inspiring.”

Sophie’s focus is now on bringing herself and Frangelico up through the grades, with the aim of obtaining Young Rider status and eventually competing at Grand Prix level. Her ultimate dream is to compete at the Olympics.  DARFIELD

Selwyn pool complex gains national accreditation The Selwyn Aquatic Centre has been awarded national PoolSafe accreditation.

To achieve this, the centre met requirements relating to pool water quality, emergency action plans, lifeguard qualifications, training and levels of supervision. Selwyn Aquatic Facilities Manager Kathy Moore said while it is not a legal requirement to have PoolSafe accreditation to operate a public pool, the accreditation ensures pool safety standards are high both for the public and staff.

“This gives people confidence that the facility is safe, runs efficiently and follows best practice guidelines for public swimming pools.

“Achieving this accreditation is quite a complex process. We have been working on it for over a year so there is a certain amount of pride in knowing the facility runs in a manner that ensures we are providing a safe environment for the community,” Mrs Moore said.

The Selwyn Aquatic Centre has had more than 123,000 visits in its first six months.

Historic Coton’s Cottage reopens

Southbridge wood carver to exhibit in Darfield

The historic Coton’s Cottage near Hororata has been officially reopened following an extensive rebuild.

Works by self-taught woodcarver Allan Trethewey from Southbridge will take centre stage next month at the Selwyn Art Gallery in Darfield.

 Coton’s Cottage was built from clay in 1864 and is cherished in the community for being the place where early Church of England settlers held their first services

The 146-year-old cob cottage was badly damaged in the 2010 Canterbury earthquake, according to Priscilla Pits from the New Zealand Historic Places Trust who addressed those gathered for the official opening.

“I’m sure Sarah and Bently Coton, who built the cottage, could never have imagined their cosy little home would suffer such a fate but perhaps they would also have been surprised to know that it had been so treasured that it was rebuilt.” Ms Pits said.

Coton’s Cottage was built by the Coton’s in 1864 and church services were held there until the historic St John’s church was built on the other side of Hororata. This too was badly damaged in the earthquakes.

In the 1970s the Hororata Historical Society was set up to restore the then dilapidated cottage. It was at that time on land owned by Mr Ray Oliver who in 1974 sold it to the crown for use as a

public reserve for the princely sum of ten cents.

“Some might wonder why so much work has gone into retaining this unassuming, architecturally undistinguished little dwelling for so long. The answer of course lies in its history — the story of Bently and Sarah Coton, who made the uncomfortable and perilous journey from England to make a new life for themselves in a new country,” Ms Pits said.

“Their story is of determination, hard work and courage. It is one that is common to many settler families across New Zealand. Preserving Coton’s Cottage helps to keep Bently and Sarah’s story, and the stories of so many others like them, alive.”

Reverend Jenni Carter blessed the building and Les Nell and Stuart Oliver cut the official ribbon declaring it open.

Mavis Oliver was the first person to have the honour of entering the building. 

The exhibition entitled A Wander Through Time opens on March 28 and will run through until April 23.

Four years ago Trethewey and his wife retired and shifted from Helensville, north-west of Auckland down to Southbridge to be closer to their family and three grandchildren. This is the first time he has shown his work in the South Island.

Malvern Community Arts Council coordinator Ingrid Cole said Allan Trethewey is a true artist who carves his wood purely for the love of doing it.

ECan seeks rates rise feedback Environment Canterbury is proposing a 4.95% rates increase across Selwyn and the rest of Canterbury for the coming year in its draft annual plan, which has been released for public submissions.

ECan Commissioner David Bedford said through careful attention to spending, prioritisation and improved productivity they have been able to hold expenditure while adding some new activities within its proposed budget for the year ahead.

“Our proposed expenditure for 2014/15 is actually slightly lower than the current year, however, inflation and changes to how some of our activities are funded mean that there will be a rate increase.”

Mr Bedford said the proposed change in the way some activities are funded is the result of a revenue review carried out last year.

“We’re proposing that some activities previously funded by user-pays charges, such as water science investigations, will be met by a targeted rate, and we’re asking people to tell us what they think of this.

“In addition to these proposed changes coming out of the revenue review, essential new work, such as additional resources to carry out the water management strategy and

further investment in health and safety activities, will result in a 1.7% increase in rates.”

Facebook wasn’t originally designed to be an online shopping facility, but these days more and more people are using it to advertise goods or services for sale. But what are your consumer rights when you buy this way?

If you buy goods or services from someone via Facebook or any online site, then what your consumer rights are pretty much boils down to whether the seller is considered a professional trader or not, and whether the seller is based in New Zealand.

If the person you are buying from is a professional trader in New Zealand, then you are covered by the Fair Trading Act. If the goods you buy are for personal (not business) use, then you are also covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act (unless you bought the goods by bidding in an auction).

If the seller is not considered a professional trader then the purchase is treated as a private sale. This means you aren’t covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act or the Fair Trading Act. However, the seller is still bound by rules about product safety (e.g. for children’s toys, cots etc) and consumer information (e.g. about care labelling, clothing and footwear country of origin labelling, used motor vehicles etc).

If the seller is based overseas then you don’t have much protection at all.

How can I tell whether the person selling via Facebook is a professional trader or not?

Sometimes it is easy to tell whether a seller is a professional trader — for example they may mention a physical shop, or refer to themselves as a business.

When it’s not so obvious, you can determine their status by checking the Facebook page. Are they selling many items of the same kind and seem to have sold a lot of items in the past? If so, then they are probably a professional

trader (even if they think of it as just a hobby).

What are my rights if I’m unhappy with what I bought in a private sale?

It’s best to start by contacting the seller directly and telling them what the problem is. The two of you may be able to agree on a solution (e.g. you return the goods and they return your money).

If this does not work, your next option is to make a claim to the Disputes Tribunal. If you believe the seller misrepresented the goods to you, then you can make a claim under the Contractual Remedies Act. Alternatively, if the goods don’t match the description supplied by the seller, you can claim under the Sale of Goods Act. Make sure you provide appropriate feedback on the seller’s Facebook page. If the sale was made via an online trading site and the seller is breaking the rules of the site, notify the site administrator. 

Numbers up for Malvern A&P Show Town met country at Sheffield on the weekend with the running of the annual Malvern A&P Show.

A combination of good weather, an entertainment theme and a new layout, which centralised many events, led to a very successful show according to show president Paul Wright.

“I’ve had a lot of good feedback.

A lot of people have said it’s their favourite show. It’s great to hear people say things like that. I’m so appreciative of the committee for what they’ve done,” Mr Wright said.

Remembering the past as town meets country The main objectives of the Oxford A&P Association are to bring town and country together for one day a year to enjoy some rural hospitality and to promote agricultural and pastoral excellence in all areas.

These include a large general purpose hall owned by the community to house the produce, craft, and flower entries on show day, an A&P building shared by the local rugby club, a four-stand shearing shed, a storage shed which becomes the Highland dancing display area on show day and other smaller buildings that are utilised at all times along with deer and cattle yards.

A main arena is sited in the middle of the ground and at one end an allweather smaller arena.

Health and Fitness Ancient Asian vegetable could help to fight obesity  by Fleur Revell

The recent update of the decades-old New Zealand food pyramid, which now acknowledges the health benefits of a lower carbohydrate diet, has Kiwis reaching for alternatives to common meal staples such as pasta, potatoes and rice.

With carbohydrates now out of favour among dieters and a growing health conscious consumer, a new industry has sprung up internationally providing equivalent products which have the taste, texture and appearance of carbs but lack the undesirable starch levels.

One of these rapidly growing product lines uses an ancient Japanese root vegetable called Konjac (pronounced con-jack) to produce foods with the look, feel and taste of pasta, noodles and rice but without the calories.

These newly created products, while eliminating the gluten and complex carbohydrate levels of popular meal staples, manage to retain the fibre and

offer a lower glycemic index equivalent for those watching their weight.

The international growth of these products is proving a significant boon for the functional food industry with one Australasian manufacturer of the product selling 1.5 million units of its Konjac line last year.

The founder of healthy living company Slendier Mai Haven, created the Konjac range in her kitchen as a way to curb her husband Ray’s growing waistline and health issues.

A staple in Japan and throughout Asia, Haven said she believed her husband’s rapid 10 kilogram weight loss was due to the introduction of Konjac to his diet.

Obesity is increasing worldwide and according to Ministry of Health figures almost one in three adult New Zealanders are obese, with a further 34 per cent overweight.

Haven believes Kiwis, like their Australian counterparts can also benefit from the introduction of this ancient Asian root vegetable to their diets.

“I remember as a young girl my mother eating Konjac to maintain a slim figure, and decided to start using it in our day to day cooking. The results were just incredible. I’m convinced that Konjac has the potential to be a major player in fighting obesity and alleviating other health problems,” she says.

“The natural fibre in the Konjac plant keeps you full for longer; it helps lower blood pressure and cholesterol and slows glucose absorption,” says Haven.

Do not become a victim of the myth that exercise alone is all you need to get fit.

 Forty-five West Melton fitness fans have just finished a round of bootcamps with Karen Hulston, learning about fitness and nutrition

Following exercise, if you don’t have the right nutrients in your body to recover or improve, it is like you are flicking a lighter with no butane. You might get a spark-because you exercised, but you won’t get a flame because you are lacking nutrients.

You need to have both the fuel which are the nutrients found in healthy foods, and the spark which is the exercise you do to ignite the flame.

Just because you exercise regularly doesn’t mean you can eat whatever you like. Yes, it is ok to have a treat every now and again, as long as it doesn’t become a bad habit.

When I was in my early twenties, I thought that because I was doing two to three fitness sessions a day it meant I could easily eat a high calorie, low nutrient (high fat, sugary) diet and even drink alcohol as often as I liked.

What I failed to realise is that physically active people need more nutrients than sedentary people. I was failing to recover and improve and this was because I was only playing half the game.

When you exercise a nutrient deficient body, you are not making it healthier — you are actually creating more of a nutrient deficiency. If you consistently feed your body inadequate fuel your body will perform inadequately.

This summer I was fortunate enough to train over 60 West Melton individuals. Most were enlisted into one of my boot camp programmes. Prior to each programme all participants were briefed on nutrition, and then they were continually educated on clean eating throughout the programme.

We conducted fitness testing and body composition testing at the start and at the end of each programme. Each participant was given daily food diaries to record what they consumed, and were given an individual calorie amount within which they were to stay. Weight checks and food diaries were monitored on a weekly basis.

At the end of each programme the results were highly consistent — the people that made the biggest changes by eating less and healthier, were the same people that showed the most improvements.

What was more interesting is not only did they experience typical improvements in their body composition but they also experienced dramatic increases in their fitness levels.

Unfortunately, it was the individuals that continued to consume excess calories and eat low nutrient foods that experienced fewer improvements in both body composition and fitness levels.

Too many people give the idea of exercise a go without feeding themselves properly. They then beat themselves up because they aren’t getting results and this can then cause binge eating. A vicious cycle starts and then they eventually end up quitting exercise altogether purely because ‘the lighter doesn’t work’.

Don’t play half the game as you will never win. Accept the fact that for optimal improvements, good nutrition is just as important as exercise. 

ranging up to $20,000 for knowingly using an unlicensed person for trade work.

Any structural work involving load bearing walls, foundations and changes that will affect the weather-tightness of the home, including roofing and bricklaying now need to be carried out by professionals, or at the least supervised and signed off by them.

Licensed Building Practitioners (LBP) include architects, engineers, foundation workers, brick and block layers and external plasterers, roofers, carpenters, electricians, plumbers and gasfitters.

Work which requires an LBP is known as restricted building work.

Further changes to the Building Act are expected this year, and LBP will need to give more information about their qualifications and skills. Written contracts will be compulsory for works costing over a certain amount.

Before doing any building alterations or renovations it is important to check in with the Selwyn District Council. You

may need consent from council to carry out the work.

Examples of work that need consents include structural work, which can include the replacing of wall linings, demolition, removal and relocation of buildings, siteworks for extensions, construction of decks one metre or more above ground level and retaining walls above 1.5 metres above ground level. Plumbing and drainage work must be done by a registered plumber or drainlayer.

Kate’s Kitchen: Cracker addicts beware  by Kate Brunner

Lavosh crackers are addictive. I love them but do try to limit the making of them to an occasional treat.

I talk myself into making a batch to have on hand for friends calling in, as these moreish crackers make the perfect accompaniment to cheese.

Unfortunately by the time the friends call in I have generally scoffed the lot.

Lavosh or Lavash are an Armenian cracker and there are many recipes about with variations.

With a bit of modifying I have found one that works for me and have begun experimenting with added flavours.

If you are handy with a rolling pin and can roll the dough out rather thinly I shall be impressed. I have never tried this as I use my pasta machine to feed the dough through and it comes out thin and smooth.

Recipe In a bowl place: ½ cup wholemeal flour 3 cups strong white flour 1 tablespoon sea salt 2 tablespoons white sesame seeds 2 tablespoons black sesame seeds Stir well In another bowl put: 1 cup milk 1 egg — whisk in 4 tablespoons melted butter Add to the dry ingredients and mix well before tipping out onto the bench, bringing it all together with your hands and then kneading for five or so minutes. It should be a smooth ball

There is a trick to getting the sheets of dough in this state and not holey.

It requires lots of kneading the dough before giving it a rest. Strong bread flour gives me the best result. of dough which you then cover in cling film and leave for at least half an hour to rest.

Cut a slice off the dough — about one fifth is easy to work with, roll out on a floured bench until very thin. Alternatively feed through the smallest setting on the pasta machine. You will end up with a very long, thin sheet which can then be cut into the size cracker you want and placed onto baking sheets.

Have the oven ready at 180°C and bake for about 10 minutes. You may need to turn the trays around to get an even colour and do watch them carefully as they can turn from pale and not very crisp to rather brown and very crisp in an unbelievably short time.

This recipe will make four to five trays of crackers which will probably mean at least 100 crackers. If you are anything like me you’ll gasp ‘100, surely not.

When Texco Drilling Ltd installs your new well you can be assured of quality. To ensure this we provide down-hole camera footage at the end of each well. We use experienced operators, with casing joining undertaken by skilled and qualified welders, using formal weld procedures. Environmentally friendly products are also used in all situations where equipment engages or enters the ground (thread grease etc.)

We specialise in:

• 150mm and 200mm wells to 150 metres • 250mm and 300mm wells to 60 metres

• Large diameter wells up to 1.2 diameter for efficient shallow wells • Galleries also installed with excavators up to 35 ton available

Well Development: We pride ourselves in leaving your well correctly screened and developed to its full potential with quality stainless steel wedge wire screens of the correct diameter and aperture size. Correct and full development has a positive impact on pump selection, protects your pump investment, and maximises the overall long-term economics of the well and pump installation.

Each well is unique and requires a different approach, something that we can discuss with you to reach a suitable and economic solution.

Texco use primarily mechanical and air development methods depending on what is required in each situation.

Inspection, rehabilitation and repair of existing wells: With our comprehensive range of equipment and high resolution Down Hole Video Camera we can inspect and recommend further action on your existing well or indeed recognise if it has reached the end of its economic life. We can then discuss a solution with you for each case.

Well repair system: We also have a well repair system available to give you a viable option to fix a broken or non-complying well, rather than drilling a new one.

Test Pumping: This can be undertaken with measurements taken by Orifice Weir, V Notch Weir or electronic flow meter with data loggers and down hole measuring done by electronic pressure transducers. We have our own diesel generator if power is not available on site.
