p Riders in the 7 to 11 year trail bike class poised for action at the starting gate during Canterbury Mini Motocross’ ‘King of the Bowl 2014’ event held at the club’s new track near Darfield. This was round one of a three round series where young riders are awarded points, with trophies given to the winners at the end of the series. Canterbury Mini Motocross is a new club which started up this year and has attracted a great deal of interest from across Selwyn.

A Selwyn District Council resource consent allowing the building of a 32m tower was granted in 2013 but a small group of residents appealed the decision to the Environment Court with a preliminary hearing set down for June. Vodafone external communications manager Michelle Baguley said with the
agreement of all parties they have put the hearing on hold to allow them to put up a 25m tower on the same site, which, because of its reduced height, is a permitted activity not requiring a resource consent. “We have had huge support from the people of West Melton to get this tower
up so felt this was an appropriate way to proceed. “As it is part of the Rural Broadband Initiative and government funding is being used, we have to ensure the tower we put up fulfils the requirement of the RBI.” continued on page 7 …
