Philip Hunt of Darfield overcame a severe back injury to participate in the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge and help raise money for research into leukemia and blood cancer.

Plans to dump a nuclear free Selwyn policy have been stopped by councillors who said they wanted the 1990 policy to be kept as a historical reminder.

The policy for Selwyn to be a nuclear weapons free zone was on a list of policies to be deleted from the SDC Policy Manual as New Zealand now had a national nuclear weapons free stance.

Cr Mark Alexander objected to the deletion of the policy.

“I believe it is as symbolic today as it was 34 years ago. I believe in its symbolism and I am a supporter of its symbolism,” Cr Alexander said.

Deputy Mayor Sarah Walters also spoke in favour of retaining the historic policy.

“I like having it in the policy manual with its review dates next to it, because it’s part of our history and part of the social fabric of Selwyn district,” Cr Walters said.

Cr Alexander told council he did not want to see a headline in The Record saying council had dropped its nuclear policy.

Mayor Kelvin Coe suggested instead the headline should read ‘council remains nuclear free’. ¢

When he was released from the hospital in February he was told to get plenty of rest but the Auckland challenge proved too great a temptation.

He trained at a gym several days a week dressed in full firefighting gear and doing about 2,000 steps on a stairmaster.

“It was a fantastic weekend,” he said of the May 17 event. “I was with the first group that went in the morning and I was done before lunchtime.”

Around 700 participants turned up to climb 51 flights of steps (1,103 stairs) in their firefighting equipment.

Mr Hunt described the feat as ‘firemen showing off for a good cause’.

His original intent was to be as competitive as possible but closer to the event he changed his goal to simply finishing the climb.

“I decided I was going to do my own thing,” he said.

His journey to the top took 23 minutes and he said he was pleased with the time.

“Twenty three minutes isn’t a fast time but 250 people were slower,” he said. “I think I did quite well.”

He said the firemen were all supportive of each other and easy to talk to.

He even saw some old friends from firefighting training.

The progress he made this year has motivated him to train harder and return next year when his back is stronger.

He said the thing that impressed him most was the generosity of all the donors throughout New Zealand.

This year’s event raised around $900,000. ¢

Council to increase high school bursary

The Selwyn District Council has voted to increase the money given to annual recipients of their high school bursary, but some councillors are not happy with the amount.

Council last week voted to increase the education fund from $1,000 to $1,500 to be made available to a student or students at Darfield and Lincoln high schools and Ellesmere College to assist with tertiary or future studies.

However, some councillors thought the bursary fund was miniscule, with Cr Nigel Barnett saying it was an embarrassment.

“I personally would be embarrassed to have the mayor go along (to prizegivings) and give such a small amount,” Cr Barnett said.

Both Cr Barnett and Cr Sam Broughton fought for the bursary to be raised to $5,000 rather than the suggested increase to $1,500.

“I’m not happy with the current level, I think it’s pretty meagre,” Cr Broughton said.

“If we’re looking to put together a bursary $3,000 doesn’t even cover one year of study, so a figure of

However, Cr Jim Morten said councillors had left it too late to make a large increase to the fund because it wasn’t budgeted for.

It was agreed to delay discussion of a further increase beyond $1,500 until later in the year as part of council’s Long Term Plan for 2015. ¢

Despite concerns over taking away commercial activity from Rolleston’s town centre, Selwyn District Council has approved a plan which will allow for large format retail activity in a new part of Rolleston’s industrial area.

At a recent meeting council said while Rolleston’s town centre was the primary focus for commercial activity they would allow some commercial businesses to set up on eight hectares of privately owned land at the corner of Hoskyns and Jones roads, which was soon to be zoned as industrial. This would be restricted to large scale commercial businesses which were unlikely to set up in the town’s centre.

SDC planning manager Tim Harris told the meeting Rolleston’s town centre had been his team’s main priority for retail planning and he’d hoped that he would be able to get that area developed first before allowing commercial interests to move to the new industrial area.

“The retail part of Rolleston has been slightly problematic for some time and so we’ve put lots of effort and council resources into masterplanning the town centre. That is the goal we wanted to protect at all costs,” Mr Harris said.

He said a parcel of six hectares of land had been set aside in the town’s centre for large format retail.

Tim Carter of Rolleston Industrial Development Ltd lobbied council, telling them he did not want to wait until the town centre was developed and wanted to proceed with his plans in what was a fast moving market.

Mr Carter was reasonably happy with the outcome but said he would have preferred a less restrictive approach from the council.

“We’re not 100% happy, but we’re satisfied with the result. We just wanted some certainty, so now we can go forward and do some master planning.

“There are high restrictions on the large format retail, so it won’t compete with the town centre.”

Commercial businesses allowed in the industrial area include service stations, retailers of electrical and mechanical parts, gardening supplies, vehicle service and suppliers, builder’s yards and equipment hirers.

Food and beverage outlets have been restricted to a maximum floor area of 150m2 with hours of trading limited from 7am to 7pm. ¢

Tracing family history has become an increasingly popular hobby for Selwyn residents, but the road to genealogical knowledge is not always a smooth one, according to Darfield Genealogy Group member Bev Robb.

With around $1 million profit from the sale of public commercial land to Foodstuffs and residential sections, the Darfield Township committee is making plans to develop the Westview reserve area on the town’s main street.

Ms Robb said those interested in researching their ancestry need to be aware of the pitfalls.

“There is a greater interest in genealogy and local history, possibly due to the internet. [Researching on the internet] can be a problem as genealogy facts must be substantiated and many things printed on the net are not always correct,” Ms Robb said.

The Darfield genealogy group has been going for nearly 28 years, beginning as an informal group meeting at a member’s home, to its present day manifestation of monthly meetings at their own resourced room at the Darfield library.

Mrs Robb said a variety of people of different ages are interested in genealogy and people are attracted to researching their family histories for a number of reasons.

“Everyone can have a different reason. I know mine was a quest to know more of my family and where and why my ancestors came to New Zealand from England and Scotland. I know others research their families for health reasons. Local history is also part of our group so we do hold some books and

information regarding the local area.”

The group have a number of resources to help budding historians, and can also give people pointers, such as being able to access some websites through the local library that normally cost users who access them from home.

“Use of a paid site is not always necessary. Ancestry.com, the library version, is available to all Selwyn District Library members free by getting a pin number from your library. There are various forums and sites on the internet which are free.

“Researchers can meet brick walls in their research and we endeavour to help or guide them in possible ways to solve their questions and possibly point them in the right direction.

“Is it difficult to find ancestors? It can be, but if you start with yourself and work backwards it is usually not too hard. Access to Birth, Death and Marriage certificates is normally straight forward,” Ms Robb said.

The Darfield Genealogy group has meetings at a Darfield library meeting room on the last Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm during the summer and 1.00pm during May, June and July. ¢

“We have been in discussion with the Selwyn District Council for over a year and have spoken in general terms in regard what kind of infrastructure will be required for the development.

“We have a great relationship with the local community which has been built up through the growth of Preston Downs and we are keen not to do anything which the community may be against.”

Selwyn Central Community Board member and former chair of the West Melton Residents Association Bruce Russell thinks the development is a great idea and is delighted Gillman Wheelans is doing it.

“As a community we have been very impressed with the company and the way they have developed Preston Downs.”

Mr Russell said one of the main issues which will have to be worked through is traffic access to and from the new development.

“There may be a possibility of it opening out directly on to the highway but most likely traffic will flow along Weedons Ross Road putting more pressure on the already busy intersection with SH73 and something will need to be done there.”

He said in the past the New Zealand Transport Agency has ruled out both traffic lights and a roundabout. ¢

Robert ‘Scotty’ Stewart of Dunsandel has found his calling later in life with his devotion to volunteer work around Canterbury.

The work of volunteers all around the country is being recognised during National Volunteer Week, which runs from Sunday, June 15 to Saturday, June 21.

Scottish born and raised in a farming family, Mr Stewart felt compelled to follow in his father’s footsteps and persued a career in dairying, but it wasn’t something that came naturally to him.

“I’m the kind of person who needs a manual to change a light bulb,” he said. “I was a disaster as a farmer.

Now I’ve found my calling.”

More suited to social work the 63-year-old self-confessed ‘volunteeraholic’ began volunteering around 12 years ago.

He now spends a considerable amount of time each week volunteering for various charities around Canterbury including the Blind Foundation, Presbyterian Support, Age Concern, the City Mission and the Salvation Army.

“I love it. Late in life I’ve discovered what I should have been doing. But it’s never too late to change your career.

You’ve got to ask yourself, are you happy with what you’re doing? Why not just say that’s it and go and do something different?”

Mr Stewart has been working with the Blind Foundation for over 10 years.

“I really enjoy it. I like meeting people, especially the elderly. Most of them are a bunch of comedians. Life’s obviously difficult for them. They’ve all got a good attitude.”

His foundation work involves driving people to activities, accompanying them on bus trips and assisting with sight impaired indoor bowls.

“I love it. I’ve made a lot of friends, not just with the blind people but also with the coaches and the staff at the Foundation. The indoor bowls is the highlight of my week.”

He has been involved with the Salvation Army family mentoring programme for 11 years. He is allocated a family in need and becomes their mentor. With the help of the Salvation Army they work out goals for the next year, which Scotty helps the family to achieve.

“The goals might be simple things like getting a child to cricket on Saturday or the parent getting a driver’s licence.”

Of all his volunteer work, family mentoring has been the most challenging.

“The work has been frustrating at times. The family has to accept this

Kidsfest coming to Selwyn

KidsFest is coming to Selwyn in July with over 30 events and activities for children on offer.

The events are part of TV2 KidsFest, which runs from July 5 to 19 during the school holidays.

“We have a great range of activities happening here which will keep kids entertained over the holidays,” Selwyn District Council’s recreation advisor Dave Tippett said.

“These include discomania, a high ropes challenge, moviemania, a kids’ market, a carrot and pickle clown show and a pool party.”

CoolStuff, the KidsFest Mascot dog, will be making a guest appearance at the pool party, which is being held at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre.

Other KidsFest events include: chocolate making, family environmental activities including wood turning,

gardening and learning about wind turbines at Leeston library, roller disco and craft sessions at Selwyn libraries.

Geocaching sessions where children use GPS to track hidden treasure are also planned at Lincoln, Darfield, West Melton and Leeston.

“KidsFest events are organised by Selwyn community groups, the council and local facilities and each year KidsFest is becoming bigger and better with more exciting activities being offered in Selwyn,” Mr Tippett said.

Some events are free and others are low cost. Booking is required for many events.

Mt Hutt ski area opened for business last Friday after a delay of a week due to weather conditions.

The brothers spent a cold night at the bottom of the Summit chair to reserve their coveted spots and claim their Mt Hutt ‘First on the Chair’ T-shirts.

They were among 700 guests who flocked to the mountain to celebrate their first runs.

“It’s great to see so many locals up the mountain having a great time,

many of whom have taken the day off work to come up for opening day,” Mr McKenzie said.

“Our team has been working hard getting the new snow ready and they’ve done a fantastic job. Everyone’s excited to be open for 2014.

“We opened with full facilities in the base building and the Summit Six Chair, Exhibition Quad Chair in operation as well as the magic carpet for our learners.” ¢

As long as a man can run without puffing and is still able to look down and see his appendage, he will generally not care about his weight.

A lot of women on the other hand are obsessed with their weight to the extent that they would prefer to be skinny rather than fit and healthy, and because of this perception fad diets have become very popular.

A fad diet is a weight loss plan or aid that promises dramatic results. These diets typically don’t result in long term weight loss and are often unhealthy or dangerous, they appeal to people by promising weight loss that is very quick and easy.

It is human nature to take the easy road and this is why many women would prefer to try the quick fix of a fad diet instead of making the effort to lose

weight through long term changes in their eating and exercise habits.

What often keeps people motivated on fad diets is the initial weight loss they experience. What they fail to realise is any restriction in calories and more awareness of what you are eating will result in initial weight loss anyway.

Weight loss experienced from fad diets is usually short lived and unsustainable.

Fad diets start off by setting unrealistic eating goals. A typical fad diet often expects an average female to eat under 1,200 calories a day, but within two to three weeks, due to the extreme calorie deficit, the body switches into starvation mode, which then triggers the body to conserve energy.

This then lowers the thyroid hormone, that is responsible for regulating basal metabolism, and when energy is needed

Why fad diets don’t work

Because you have less muscle, you must eat even fewer calories than before to reduce your body weight.

Dealing with anxiety and worry u by Anna Dalzell

What a fantastic feat of engineering our body is. The way in which it can respond to its environment and maximise survival is astounding.

We are geared towards surviving — our reflexes and rapid responses are designed to keep us safe from the moment we are born.

This can be very useful when faced with a sabretooth tiger, or indeed when it helps us to avoid dimly lit alleys in the dead of night. It is not so useful when we are tricked by our thoughts into responding to every small cue that presents itself.

Go ahead and thank your brain for trying so hard to keep you safe.

Now decide on a better way to do that. It is more useful to save those stress responses for when you really need them. How do you want to respond to everyday life?

Ask yourself, would it be more useful to respond to something you are faced with by utilising your intelligence, clarity, insight, calm, resourcefulness, and a sense of your own ability to deal with situations as they arise?

People who do this well don’t arm themselves with ‘what ifs’ and worst case scenarios. They

don’t live by the philosophy of preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. Instead they imagine themselves responding resourcefully and making the best decisions they can with whatever presents itself.

Imagine a disaster movie. When we reach the climax of the disaster a good director will have our hearts racing, adrenaline pumping and nerves on edge. If we treat our lives like this by imagining how dreadfully things could turn out, we will be left in the same hyper state.

As the film ends we notice how the actors have responded to, and resolved the crisis, and we feel calm, well-resourced and confident of the human capacity to endure and conquer.

Our brains don’t care whether something is real or imagined, it signals our body to respond in the same way.

Be your own movie director — make sure you respond well to life’s situations, reaching satisfying resolutions to your life’s movies. ¢

Recent cholesterol series Last month we concluded a series on cholesterol and heart disease.

We looked at some of the dietary and supplement options for people to reduce cholesterol and generally to improve heart health. As a result I received many contacts from people and I offered a lot of practical advice. For some it was just short telephone or email contact for others we created complete cardiovascular wellness programmes.

The most common questions were around statin cholesterol medication, statin side effects and alternatives to statins. I always state that I cannot give advice on medications as this is between a doctor and patient and would never suggest people stop prescribed medications. My advice to people on statins was restricted to dealing with side effects and generally reducing heart disease risk through diet and various supplements.

I have noted increasing numbers of GP’s and specialists now understand the relationship between statins, co enzyme Q10 and the most commonly experienced side effects. Next month I will prove without doubt that the manufacturers of statins also know the full story. We will look at a United States drug patent held by the makers of one of the top selling statins that proposes a new drug combining statins and CoQ10.

My view is that if quality Co enzyme Q10 was routinely prescribed at the right dosages alongside statins, most of side effects would disappear.

There are a group of people who, on discussion with their GP had discontinued statin therapy because of side effects.

There are some who for various reasons have decided not to use medications. With these people I recommended a three month trial of the natural cholesterol manager Sytrinol® with dietary changes, especially increasing soluble fibre and reducing sugars and refined carbohydrates. This year I discovered by accident in my garden my first crop of hazelnuts, all one and a half kilos.

The four trees — well, three now as one succumbed, have promised much and delivered little apart from a bumper harvest of seven nuts some years ago which was obviously a false alarm.

The dog and I were taking a stroll in and about the vegetable garden before gathering some salad things for lunch when I stumbled over a few nuts. Half an hour later we had a basketful. Well, I did.

To skin the hazelnuts put them on a low-sided tray and place in oven for 15 minutes at 180°C. Shake a few times while roasting.

the eggs, one at a time, beating lightly between each addition.

4. Stir in the coffee. Don’t worry if the mixture curdles a bit — all should come together with the dry ingredients.

5. Sift in the flour and baking powder and fold in, followed by most of the hazelnuts and chocolate. Keep some to sprinkle on the top. Put mixture into the cake tin. Smooth the top of the

mixture and scatter over the remaining hazelnuts and chocolate.

6. Bake one hour 20 minutes or until tested with a skewer and it comes out clean.

Leave for a bit before cutting and then dig in — eaten slightly warm it is delicious.

It’s even better with a dollop of mascarpone and a cup of espresso. ¢

The sweet delight of Moscato u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

The Moscato grape originated in Italy’s northwest region and is officially known as Moscato d’Asti, named after the grape and the Italian town of Asti.

This golden coloured sweet delight is a favourite of those new to wine, or those aficionados looking for something not too heavy to accompany brunch, a light meal or dessert.

A good Moscato will have a perfumelike fragrance, will be semi-sparkling, reasonably low in alcohol content, fruity and sweet.

Its aromatics should include a stunning array of honeysuckle, orange blossom, almonds, ginger and fruit flavours of green grapes, citrus tones and ripe peach.

Cheaper Moscatos will rely more on their sweet sugar content for flavour, while the more sophisticated wines will favour ripe stone fruits, with apricots, peaches and floral notes.

Do not bother keeping this wine for too long in the cellar because Moscato is made to be consumed while it is young.

Serve it chilled as an accompaniment to dessert, such as fresh berries and cake in the summer, and this time of year, warm apple shortcake, lemon meringue pie or fruit crumble.

Moscato can also be enjoyed with antipasto platters and cheese. Try it with crumbed camembert and water crackers. It really comes into its own when enjoyed with brunch. You can also enjoy Moscato as an aperitif to stimulate the appetite before a meal.

ROAD SAFETY DRIVE TO THE CONDITIONS

My favourite Moscato which is easily purchased in New Zealand is from Brown Brothers Vineyard in Australia. The label promises the aroma of musk and freshly crushed grapes.

It is alive with a vibrant and mouth filling sherbet flavour. A light spritz delivers a lovely refreshing finish. This wine is a refreshing breath of happiness in your mouth and doesn’t hit you heavily as some wines do.

While New Zealand has been slow to embrace the joys of Moscato some wineries are beginning to produce some lovely ones.

Soljans Estate near Auckland have won awards with their Fusion Sparkling Muscat. This Moscato is made from 100% Muscat grapes grown in sunny Gisborne vineyards. It is described as having aromas of sweet grapes on the nose, low alcohol, well balanced sugars and loads of juicy fruit flavours. It is perfumed and lively with a refreshing sugar/acid balance and plenty of unabashed sweetness. Villa Maria winery in Auckland and Marlborough produce a lovely subtle Moscato that is not too sweet and is perfect for celebrations. Banrock Station also produce a Moscato described as displaying lifted Muscat-style aromatics, with subtle hints of fresh grapefruit and lemon. On the palate, delicate passion

fruit and fresh pineapple flavours with sweet characteristics are present. The gentle spritz gives the wine an appealing lift and refreshing finish.

So next time you’re looking for a light sweet sip of wine magic, look out for a Moscato and bring on the celebrations. ¢

Travelling abroad can be fraught with problems, but one way you can help to minimise your misfortunes is by booking your holiday with a bonded travel agent.

In this instance, if the travel agent belonged to the TAANZ, the association will pay up to $250,000 for unticketed bookings.

If you had booked with an unbonded agent, you would have to stand in line as an unsecured creditor.

It is important to note that travel agents are not responsible for things that happen beyond their control or knowledge, such as owners/operators of businesses double booking their services or you losing your tickets.

Consumer.org advises when you book a holiday make sure your agent knows your requirements. If you have special needs, put them in writing and keep a copy for yourself. If you amend your plans, let the agent know in writing.

receipts and other documents. If you think you are due compensation, add up how much the problem cost you in real terms and estimate the value of lost opportunities.

If you cannot reach a settlement with the company, write to TAANZ. It doesn’t pay compensation, but it may reprimand the agent if there has been a breach of its code of ethics or rules.
