Habitat protection work along the Waimakariri River has led to the return of tui for the first time in landowner memory.

The Milliken and Taege families have been working for many years with a range of organisations to protect and build on the native biodiversity on their respective properties on the banks of the Waimakariri River near Springfield.

West Melton resident Dave Murdoch, a former Commonwealth Games representative for England, has set up a new website which is sure to appeal to all sports fans in Selwyn.

Murdoch, a medical writer, pharmacist and coach has recently started the website, www.selwynsportfocus.net.

“The aim is to encourage participation, improvement and enjoyment in sport,” Murdoch says.

Murdoch wants his new website to reflect his enthusiasm, but also some of his experience and medical knowledge.

“Every sport can learn a lot from other codes, from athletes, coaches and administrators, and there’s a huge amount of knowledge throughout Selwyn.”

Murdoch admits that it might be difficult to fund his website through advertising, but sees this as a longterm goal.

“SSF is an easy-to-read e-zine, with lots of training tips, medical advice, club and school sports’ success stories as well as athlete and coach profiles.”

Murdoch has a varied sporting background with an interest in football, swimming, cycling, running and triathlon.

Murdoch played a lot of football in England, but when he arrived in Auckland from north-east England in the late 1980s, he travelled throughout New Zealand competing in triathlons.

“It was a great way to combine races — at places like Waiheke Island, Whangamata and Wellington — and see the country.”

“The race was a real buzz and the crowd was massive,” he says.

Later, Murdoch played football for Christchurch United and is now a junior coach for Selwyn United and Selwyn representative football.

Three years ago, Murdoch started a summer football league for under 11s at West Melton.

“The competition has been a great success and widely enjoyed. Last year, 150 kids played.” ¢

Richard Lang is to replace Olive Webb as chair of the Hororata Community Trust.

Due to work commitments Webb has resigned as chair but will continue to be a trustee of the Trust, which was established in 2011 to help the district recover from the September 2010 earthquake.

Lang has been a trustee since it was established and as a partner at law firm Duncan Cotterill, was involved in the development of the Trust’s deed documents. He has strong ties to the Hororata region, where his wife grew up and parents-in-law still reside.

“We are entering a new, exciting phase in the Trust’s work,” Lang says.

“The public discussions on the future of Hororata have been fantastic and it’s great to

see so much passion and vision coming from the community.

“As chair of the Hororata Community Trust, I can’t wait to see where the community takes these focus groups and discussions.”

Outgoing chair Olive Webb, who is standing for the Selwyn mayoralty this year, says the highlight of the past two years has been the success of the Hororata Highland Games.

“This event brings thousands of visitors and competitors to the area, not to mention revenue and fundraising opportunities for all groups in the community,” she says.

In recognition of the works undertaken by the Millikens, the Selwyn-Waihora Canterbury Water Management Strategy Zone Committee provided $6,000 of funding for further weed control.

Down river of the Millikens’ is a property managed by Trevor and Heather Taeges who have undertaken extensive works to protect forest and restore many areas which had been subjected to stock grazing in the past, resulting in the arrival of tui this year.

Exciting times in Selwyn

i am excited to be living in the Selwyn district and while attending the 2013 Local Government New Zealand Conference recently it confirmed to me how fortunate we are to live in Selwyn.

Due to our growth in Selwyn we are able to maintain our services facilities and provide new ones as well. Our growth means that we are able to shape the future of our growing communities, the physical built environment and the social fabric of our growing areas and townships.

This is exciting, to be able to work towards leaving a positive legacy of well planned growth that will exist long after we have moved on.

Selwyn can offer a wide range of places for new residents to move to, from larger urban centres, smaller townships, small rural blocks, small and large farms. I think this is an understated strength of Selwyn — one can find a place to live that suits the lifestyle that one  Cr Mark Alexander wishes to live and that suits one’s finances.

Some councillors have made mention of their desire to see the UAGC (Uniform Annual General Charge) portion of the rates to rise to its maximum 30%. This is regularly debated at council. What was not mentioned is that this change would mean an increase in rates for properties with a capital value under $760,000 and a decrease in rates for properties with higher capital values. This would mean 80% of properties would pay more rates and 20% pay less.

The planning hearing for “RC115331 Vodafone telecommunication Tower West Melton” has been rescheduled for 9am, 28th August 2013 at the Rolleston SDC HQ. This was set for November 2012 but was postponed by the applicant.

An item for discussion at the recent Local Government Conference was the call for local government to be recognised in New Zealand’s constitutional framework.

Currently the Constitution Act of 1986 makes no mention of local government. At the end of last year, the purpose of local government was radically changed through amendments to the Local Government Act of 2002.

Dog registrations on the rise

While the population of the Selwyn district continues to grow in leaps and bounds so do canine numbers.

New plans are on the horizon for the Malvern Community bus as organisers look to provide a door-to-door service for residents.

The number of dogs registered in Selwyn has grown by almost 16% over the last five years with 11,434 registered this year compared to 9,895 in 2008.

Environmental Services manager John Christensen says activity levels in all of the council’s consenting, registration and licencing services have increased noticeably in recent years.

“As the district’s population grows, we’ve seen an increase in demand for every type of consent and licencing service, from building and resource consents to liquor licences and dog registrations,” he said.

“We are hoping to run a bus on Thursdays where we pick people up from their homes and deliver them around Darfield to the doctors or to get a haircut or some groceries,” community bus organiser Kath Stirrup said.

She said the service would run weekly or fortnightly and start when there was enough interest expressed.

The charge for using the service would be two dollars. Regular bus trips to the new Selwyn Aquatic Centre for people to attend aquacise classes are also planned.

The bus service started in Darfield over six months ago to assist the elderly and disabled in the community. It belongs to the North Canterbury Minibus Trust and was previously on loan to the Leeston community who liked having a

bus so much that they ended up buying their own.

At present the bus travels most Tuesdays to Christchurch taking passengers to Riccarton or Papanui alternately.

Ms Stirrup said that some people catch the bus to Christchurch to shop or go to the movies, while others meet with relatives and friends, or catch a city bus to other locations.

A small group of volunteer drivers take turns at driving the bus. It can take 8-9 passengers and there is some storage room for mobility walkers. The bus can also be hired out to groups in the community.

Do you have an ‘Itis’?

If you have a health problem that ends with “itis” it is an inflammatory disease. The term arthritis describes various inflammatory joint diseases. More specifically bursitis describes the inflammation of the fluid filled sacs (bursae) in joints. Tendonitis is inflammation of tendons and so on.

I remember about 15 years ago having bursitis in my elbow. My elbow was swollen, hot to touch, red and very painful. In my case this was caused by an infection and needed IV antibiotics. Following this I had a weakness in my elbow which lasted till about 10 years ago when I started adopting seriously anti-inflammatory diets and supplements.

Our immune system responds to threats by sending a cocktail of chemicals with exotic names including prostaglandins, histamine, complement and cytokines.

These chemicals cause a series of events that include dilation of blood vessels which increases blood flow.

This extra blood flow causes heat and redness. These inflammatory chemicals then cause capillaries to become more permeable causing protein rich fluid to leak into tissue spaces. With joints this causes swelling, stiffness and of course pain.

This inflammatory response is unwanted when it occurs in otherwise healthy tissue. It is even worse when it is triggered to fix something it cannot repair. This can lead to long term inflammation. With arthritis, joint tissue has eroded and the immune system thinks this is something it needed to fix and inflames the joint unnecessarily.

There are many naturally occurring compounds including antioxidants and some fats that actually switch inflammation off and bring sanity to inflamed tissue. Lois Johnston and her singing students are coming back to Hororata this Saturday to celebrate mid-winter Christmas with an evening of music and readings.

Johnston’s studio, where she taught singing at the University of Canterbury, had to be abandoned following the destructive earthquakes of February 2011. She and her students came to Hororata to practise at St John’s Church.

While the group has already held one concert to thank the community for its support, this concert will feature a mix of winter themed classical songs by Brahms, Cornelius, Reger, Durante and Handel, as well as some lighter classical music, Christmas readings and carols.

Johnston describes herself as a professional classical singer.

“In addition to my performing engagements, I currently teach Christchurch Cathedral’s boy choristers, as well as my register of approximately 20 private pupils who I teach at my studios in Christchurch and Hinds.”

Her favourite music is early baroque, but she delights in the flexibility of moving through different styles of music for different occasions.

The evening starts with ‘Christmassy’ mulled wine and nibbles in St Johns Church in Hororata at 6.00pm on Saturday August 3.

Moulder who was born in Brightwater Nelson has worked as a singer, actor and comedienne, in theatre, radio, television and film, both in New Zealand and internationally.

She won Actress of the Year 2000 in the Chapman Tripp Wellington Theatre Awards, for her portrayal of Vivian Bearing in the Circa Production of Wit and picked up the same award in 2003 for Sylvia in Meeting Karpovsky.

Playing Miss Havisham, directed by Sue Rider, is based around Claudia who lives in rural Canterbury.

Her husband is a farm accountant and her son Ben plays in a band.

When an eccentric Irish film-maker arrives in New Zealand to make a film of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, Claudia is keen to audition for the role of Miss Havisham as she sees it as a way out of her humdrum existence.  Helen Moulder as Claudia in Playing Miss Havisham As she prepares for the role, Claudia finds her own life Darfield Recreation Centre on August takes on the twists and turns of a 15 at 7.30pm. Grey willow targeted Grey willows, especially those invading native wetland vegetation, are being targeted for control around Selwyn by Environment Canterbury (ECan).

Control work on willows has started on public conservation land managed by the Department of Conservation at Wards and Williams reserves, Yarrs Flat, the Lakeside Wildlife Management Reserve, along the lower Halswell Canal and at Lower Tramway (Leeston Drain).

Also known as pussy, grey willow are aggressive colonisers which can completely change wetland habitats from native rush, sedge and reed areas to dense, almost impenetrable forest. They can also be a headache

for farmers, requiring clearing from drains and damaging fences.

Grey willow spreads quickly because their seeds are dispersed by the wind and the area covered by willows around Lake Waihora/Ellesmere has doubled over the last 25 years.

Rolleston station plan draws public interest u by Kent Caddick

Last week’s front page story in The Record has prompted a variety of responses from the people of Rolleston.

The Selwyn Central Community Board is investigating ways to reinvigorate the old railway station and has called for ideas from locals as to what they would like to see happen to the station.

Board chair Liz Russell says she has been delighted with responses from The Record readers.

“There have been some exciting and very thoughtful ideas expressed in the responses and it shows people do care about the station and its place in the history of the town.

“It is great to see people taking the time and effort to think about what should happen with the station and we will be taking their thoughts on board as we progress our plans.”

Many of those who responded thought a café would be a good idea.

“I have been saying for awhile that the station would be great to turn into a cafe. Passengers for the train and Northbound traffic I think would love it,” one Rolleston resident said.

Another said, “a cafe — with a railway station theme, displaying photos, memorabilia etc, plus a combined gift shop area (similar to that at the Dragonfly Cafe in Rolleston).

“I think there’s definitely room for another cafe in Rolleston and one with a theme would be great, plus it would create more employment opportunities for locals.”

The recognition of the station’s place in the history of Rolleston was important to many who responded.

“I saw the article in the newspaper and I agree the station needs to be appreciated and recognised for its history.

“Rolleston was an important station in its day and it would definitely be cool to see it restored, or even just to replace the concrete block of a station we have at the moment with something a bit more historic,” was one response along those lines.

Others urged the board to consider the future as well as the past.

“There is every chance that it will become a rail commuter terminal in the not too distant (10 years?) future and whatever is done should be to enhance and encourage that development.”

A mural painted on the station walls had its fans as did landscaping.

“I am one of the many people who drive by the railway station and think something could be done. I think a mural with snowy mountains and an old black steam train would look beautiful, especially because of all the building going on over the railway track we are losing our views of the beautiful snowy mountains.

“Landscaping to hide boarded up windows and present an attractive counterpoint to plantings on the other side of the road would be very effective.”

Rolleston Youth worker echoes council u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

A Rolleston youth worker is backing a Selwyn District Council independent analysis of the Selwyn Central ward which concludes there is a lack of social opportunities for young people in Rolleston.

“Boredom is a big problem,” said Courtney Forrest, a youth worker for the Youth Southwest Christchurch Trust.

“Many of the young people come from households with two working parents who lead busy lives.”

“Drugs and alcohol are a problem for some of the young people and many have everything at their fingertips, but not enough responsibilities.”

Forrest said “Rolleston youth are some of the hardest kids I’ve worked with and they are searching for someone who is going to be stable in their lives.”

He sees himself as a  Rolleston’s skate park is a proven ‘hang-out’ spot for the town’s youngsters. voice for youth and wants to see Rolleston build a strong youth chilled out and enjoys hanging out and talking about real community where young people feel that life experiences.”

Forrest is also part of the 24/7 Youth Workers Trust where they have a place to belong.

I have been involved in the media for over 20 years after graduating from the University of Canterbury with a post-graduate Diploma of Journalism. During that time I have worked for a number of national news organizations such as Radio New Zealand, National Radio, NewstalkZB and Sky Sport. For the last 13 years I have been involved in the community newspaper industry both as a reporter and an editor, principally around Canterbury. The community news environment is extremely exciting to me and I take pride in helping local people tell their stories and in keeping the community informed about what is happening around them.

I have been living in Rolleston for over five years and the Selwyn district for over 15 years. I have been a managing director for The Garage Sale NZ Ltd and recently worked in sales for Burnco Marine based in Christchurch. My working career has always had a sales element to it as sales manager for What’s On Sale, a web based trading company, and managing director of Healthaire South Island. The Selwyn district is the fastest growing region in New Zealand providing huge commercial opportunities for the many businesses which call it home and I am keen to play a part in those companies being able to achieve their full potential.

Collaborative exhibition a first for five artists

A collaborative exhibition of five Canterbury artists is the latest offering on view at the Selwyn Art Gallery in Darfield.

Central Plains Water says it has received strong backing from farmers to its proposed share structure, and the construction approvals necessary for the first stage of the project to begin.

Between The Lines features works

by Sue Alexander, Ruth Killoran, Ruth Stanton McLeod, Sandy Gottermeyer and Celia Wilson. Their works are a mix of artistic disciplines including printmaking, painting, sculpture and jewellery.

Between the Lines is the first exhibition for this group, but all five artists agree their creative collaboration will continue.

“Women artists are inspiring,” Sue Alexander says.

“The sharing of joint knowledge leads to expansion of ideas and motivation. It can create possibilities for one’s own work that may have never been considered.”

Malvern Community Arts Council arts coordinator Ingrid Cole says Between the Lines refers to shared themes such as the lines found in nature, contour lines and lines of stratification and lines connecting human beings like generation lines and lines of communication.

The exhibition opens this Friday and runs through to Thursday, August 29.

The gallery will be open daily (except Mondays) from 10am to 4pm for the duration of the exhibition.

More than 200 shareholders attended a special general meeting last week, along with Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe and Ministry of Primary Industries representative, Kevin Steel.

The meeting voted unanimously to proceed with construction of the irrigation scheme, with only one shareholder voting against the proposed share structure.

“The attendance and support level was outstanding and while not unexpected, it was a huge endorsement of the future confidence in the project,” CPW chief executive Derek Crombie says.

“The message to the board and management from the meeting was to proceed with the full scheme quickly.

“This decision means that irrigation of the Central Canterbury area has moved to reality and a start on construction can be planned for early 2014,” he said.

CPW will now prepare a prospectus to raise the shareholder equity to build the 20,000ha Stage 1 of the scheme.

Mr Crombie says over the next month shareholder cluster group meetings will be held to explain the details of the

He says this would assist shareholders to make decisions on their share uptake and future investment. ¢

Nominations open for local body elections

Selwyn’s electoral officer Douglas Marshall is reminding candidates for this year’s local body elections to get their nominations in well before the cut off date next month.

This year’s musical theatre treat by the Kirwee Players opened to an audience of over 100 people on Friday night.

The show’s Director Mabel Knight and Musical Director Diane Coad have guided the cast through several months of rehearsal to provide a show which was well received by audience members. The season continues this coming weekend with shows at the Kirwee Community Hall on Thursday 1 August at 7.30pm, Friday 2 August at 7.30pm and Saturday 3 August at 2.00pm and 7.30pm.

Nominations for mayor, council and community boards opened on July 19 and will close at noon on Friday, August 16.

“I would advise all candidates to get their nominations in well before the deadline so they can be checked to ensure they are in order and if changes need to be made we can get that done before cut off,” Marshall says.

Information on how to complete a nomination form is available on the council’s website. Candidates can also download a copy of the Candidate Handbook while hard copy versions of the handbook are available at the Darfield Service Centre,

Leeston Service Centre, Lincoln Service Centre and council’s Rolleston Main Office in Norman Kirk Drive.

Marshall is also reminding voters to ensure they are on the electoral roll.

“People must be enrolled as a parliamentary elector to vote in these elections and most voters should have received an orange electoral pack in the mail by now,” Marshall says.

People can check whether they are enrolled by inspecting the preliminary electoral roll at the council’s service centres and the main council office in Rolleston as well as at the Arthur’s Pass Store and Café and the Mobile Library.

Voting papers will be delivered between September 20 and 25 — voting closes at noon on October 12 and Marshall is advising voters not to mail their votes in after October 10 as they may not arrive in time and instead drop them into one of the service centres. ¢
