Selwyn’s only locally owned and operated community newspaper The Record has taken out the prestigious Frank Veale Memorial Award for Most Improved Newspaper at the New Zealand Community Newspaper Association’s annual awards’ night held in Wellington last week.

The Record firstly took out its most improved category award for community newspapers with a circulation of 7,500 to 20,000, with sister publication the Kaipara Lifestyler runner-up, before being named overall winner across all classes in the award category.

Both papers are published by NorthSouth Multi Media which is owned by West Melton’s Kelvin Green and managing director Allan Mortensen of Dargaville.

NSMM general manager Deb Wright said the company was delighted at its success at the awards.

“The CNA awards are a strong indicator of how our publications are tracking against other publications from the top independent newspaper publishers from all over the country.

“To achieve such national recognition tells us and our loyal advertising clients that we are up there with the best in the country and all of our staff should be very proud of that.”

The Record, which celebrates its first birthday next week, evolved into its present format out of the long running Malvern Record, a smaller mono A4 publication, which had been based in Darfield for over 50 years.

“The employment of an editor and reporter has lifted the quality and quantity of editorial content and presentation,” she said.

“While The Record’s path to a traditional community paper is not unique — this is how many publications have evolved — the paper has achieved

a remarkable metamorphosis this year.” The NZCNA is made up of independent newspaper publishers throughout New Zealand and has been running for over 50 years. It represents around 70 independent publishers of weekly, bi-weekly and monthly community newspaper publications and over 300 entries were received for this year’s awards across 14 categories. ¢

The Malvern Health and Community Welfare Trust has celebrated its 20th birthday.

Selwyn dogs and their owners can expect to see a friendly new face at the Rolleston Dog Park over the school holidays.

Isabella Howe will be taking up her role as a volunteer Junior Dog Park Ranger at the Rolleston Dog Park for two weeks as part of the High Flyers extension programme at Weedons School.

The 11-year-old will be at the off-leash park during the school holidays to welcome people and share some of the key things she learnt at a Dog Smart Course which is run in schools around the district by the Selwyn District Council’s animal control team.

Community mourns passing Selwyn Aquatic Centre turns one u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Malvern residents have been saddened by the sudden death of James Deans of Homebush.

Mr Deans was the fifth generation of the Deans family to live at Homebush, a farm which has been in the Deans family since 1851.

“He is going to be badly missed,” Malvern Community Board member Mary Ireland said.

Mrs Ireland said Mr Deans was someone who quietly worked in the background of many organisations, including the Hanui Trust which provides housing for the elderly in Darfield.

The Selwyn Aquatic Centre has celebrated its first birthday with over a quarter of a million visits to the centre in its first 12 months.

“He was quiet and unassuming,” These sentiments were echoed

by Malvern Ward district councillor John Morten.

“His contribution to Malvern community groups and organisations which he did for no remuneration was huge,” Cr Morten said.

Mr Deans was 66 years of age, and leaves behind his wife Louise, four children and eleven grandchildren.

His funeral was held last Friday at Homebush. ¢

Letter to the editor Dear editor, As the last person to man the Rolleston Station in 1984–89, I was delighted to read in The Record of the planned effort to rejuvenate the station.

A good effort has been made over the years to tidy up the area around it, and I always hoped that someone

could come up with something for the station.

My five years in Rolleston provided a lot of excellent memories, and I still stop at the station for a look when I pass through.

All the best for the new development.

The centre, which cost $14.7 million to build, was opened on June 22, 2013, and celebrated its first birthday with a pool party on Sunday, June 22. The centre employs around 50 staff in full and part time roles.

Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe marked the event by cutting a birthday cake with his daughter Sirinton Stamps, a former New Zealand champion swimmer, and baby granddaughter Penelope Stamps.

“The Aquatic Centre has been extremely well used by the community and is a great asset to Selwyn,” Mayor Coe said.

“It is a facility which can be used by people from across the district of all ages and it is a great place to come both in the middle of winter when cold or

raining and unpleasant to be outdoors and in the heat of summer.”

He said the centre has had 258,000 admissions in its first year, exceeding its target of 250,000 admissions, while 4,450 enrolments have been taken for the centre’s learn to swim programme, with 98% of swim school pupils coming from Selwyn.

The Aquatic Centre receives regular visits from Selwyn schools which use the facility for swim lessons and has also hosted several local schools swim championships, along with the Canterbury primary and intermediate school swimming sports.

The newly formed Selwyn Swim Club is based at the centre and has around 80 members, many of whom swim competitively. ¢

The Darfield branch is the first CAB in Selwyn with organisers hoping it will ‘bud off’ into other parts of the district.

“I know how fewer services there are in the country and how important this is. We’re here and we’re staying,” said Canterbury CAB Chairperson Rachel Owen.

Mayor Kelvin Coe said he hoped the CAB would encourage more services to the district.

“This is a great addition to the community. I hope this is a model that will spread across the district in time,” Mayor Coe said. Ruth Warren of Darfield CAB encouraged more people to

volunteer for Darfield CAB. “The training is really interesting. You learn so much.

It’s really rewarding.”

The CAB service helps people to know their rights and responsibilities as well as providing information on local organisations and activities.

The Darfield CAB will be open for members of the public to drop in from July 1, operating out of a room at the Darfield Library building each Tuesday from 10am until 2pm.

People wanting to access information can also use the website www.cab.org. nz or phone 0800 367 222 to speak to a volunteer. ¢

Most of the changes that will affect your rights as a consumer come into effect on June 17, 2014.

The reason for this delay has been to give businesses time to change their trading practices if necessary. But it would be a good idea to be aware of your new consumer rights, especially if you are planning to buy some major items within the next year.

The important consumer laws that are changing are the Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA) and the Fair Trading Act (FTA) as follows: Online purchases You will be protected by the Consumer Guarantees Act when you buy goods or services from a business online. This includes when you bid for them in an online auction.

Businesses must also identify themselves as a trader when they sell online.

New Consumer Guarantees Act delivery guarantee If you buy goods from a business and they also agree to deliver the goods to you, they will be responsible for making sure those goods arrive in good condition and on time.

Extended warranties You will have the right to cancel an extended warranty within five working days of receiving it. Businesses will also have to explain before you buy

the warranty what extra protections it gives you over the rights you already have under the Consumer Guarantees Act. Door-to-door and telemarketing sales You will be able to cancel a contract for goods or services within five working days if a business approaches you at home or at work, by phone or in person.

Proof of claims about a product or service Businesses won’t be able to make ‘unsubstantiated claims’, which are claims about a product or service that they don’t have evidence or reasonable grounds to make. For example, if a business claims a jersey is made from 100% natural fibres, they must be able to prove this.

Layby sales Businesses will have to give you written information about the terms of your layby, including your cancellation rights.

Unsolicited goods and services Businesses won’t be able to demand payment for any goods or services you have not requested. An example where this law will cover you is where a business leaves a box of greeting cards in your mailbox with the idea that you will buy them. ¢

Possibly Selwyn’s most endearing new residents are two newborn black lambs named West and Melton.

Lifestyle block owner Lisa Bullock was encouraged to name the twin lambs after their town of origin by West Melton Community group Facebook users who thought the lambs should appear in the town’s 150th street parade at Labour Weekend.

“I don’t usually name the lambs, but it’s a special year and they’ve created so much interest,” Ms Bullock said.

The twins were born to a white ewe hogget mother who has taken to first time motherhood very well. “She’s a brilliant mother, quite protective,” Ms Bullock said.

The twin’s father is an Arapawa Island ram with spectacularly large curly horns who has fathered around 20 lambs in the last five years.

The early lambing was intentionally planned by Ms Bullock who said she has good yields when lambing this time of year. Ms Bullock said West and Melton had attracted quite a bit of interest in the community.

“They’re cute. It’s unusual for one of my white ewes to have black lambs.

They’re both ram lambs. They might be able to produce more black lambs in the future.” ¢

Darfield High School’s stand-in drama teacher Laura Gallacher didn’t think it would be possible for the school to do a drama production this year.

In fact it has managed to do two.

Although Mrs Gallacher has a strong background in drama and teaching she said she had never run a production single handedly.

“I got the job late last year,” she said.

She was hired to the position while the other drama teacher was away on maternity leave and said the task of putting together an entire production alone was daunting.

That was were the expertise and experience of the Darfield drama students came in.

Mrs Gallacher credited the students and their knowledge with making this year’s two productions possible.

An abundance of new feet will be treading the well-worn stage boards at this year’s Kirwee Players’ production of Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, with a record cast, almost half who are new to the company.

A combination of population growth in areas such as West Melton and the committee’s decision to take on a comedic and risqué adult show have led to a bumper cast of 40 compared to around 25 in recent years, according to committee spokesperson Courtney Freller.

the process of getting UFB, including Rolleston and Lincoln. Four companies have won contracts to provide UFB to 33 cities and towns around New Zealand.

Enable is the company rolling out UFB to the Rolleston and Lincoln areas.

Customers will access UFB through a retail provider such as the telcos and ISPs that currently provide your broadband.

If you are in an area where UFB fibre cables have been laid and the service has been turned on, you can arrange to get connected by selecting a Internet Service Provider (ISP), and then choosing a plan.

The ISP will then contact the company providing UFB in your area and they will organise for a technician to make the connection to your house and hook up a router supplied from your ISP. You will need to be there to talk to the technician as some decisions will need to be made about cabling and router placement.

Two boxes will be installed, including one on the outside and one on the inside of your house.

Protection vital for bees u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Where would we be without the humble, hardworking bee?

For lifestyle blocks the bee is an asset as it pollinates clover, crops and garden flowers, and produces that delectable sweet delight — honey.

Retired veterinarian and lifestyle block owner Dr Marjorie Orr, said bees are extremely important to agriculture and horticulture businesses.

While gathering pollen and nectar from clovers, fruit trees, garden flowers and many horticultural crops, bees move pollen from one plant to another, pollinating the plants as they go. This is necessary if the plant is to produce fruit and seed.

“It’s not an exaggeration to say that to help ensure the future of farming, all farmers need to play their part in protecting the honeybee,” Dr Orr said.

The main threat to bees, according to Dr Orr are a reduction in flower numbers, the use of insecticides on farms and gardens and the onset of pests and diseases that weaken and kill bees.

“Not so long ago, bees got much of their pollen from broom, gorse and willow, and the pollen was very nutritious for hives. These plants are

now classified as pests by councils and the Department of Conservation, so there are fewer of them around. This means that in many areas, there is less pollen and therefore honeybee hives are weaker,” she said.

Dr Orr said the effects of insecticides on bees can be reduced by avoiding applying insecticides to flowering crops in daylight hours while bees are around.

“Unusually warm temperatures in the early morning or evening may result in bees foraging when they would normally be back in their hive,” she said.

If using pesticides choose products that break down quickly after application.

“Pesticides that degrade within a few hours of application can be applied with minimal risk when bees are not foraging.

When temperatures are unusually low, insecticide residues may remain toxic for longer. Products with activity lasting more than eight hours merit extra precautions.”

Be aware of spray drifts in windy conditions, and use granular rather than dust and wettable powders that can stick to bees. ¢

The English immigrants had loved the old character homes from their former country and wanted to build something homely and with a touch of quirkiness.

“A lot of new homes in New Zealand have sharp lines. We weren’t into the modernist minimalist look. We wanted something cosy,” Neil said.

Fans of the television home building show Grand Designs the Hardisty’s were interested in incorporating straw bales and mud into their building materials.

“Straw bales have such tremendous heat and sound insulation properties. You can reduce your heating bill from 60 to 80 percent,” Neil said.

The house has a truly local flavour with straw bales purchased from Leeston and clay from Canterbury Bricks in Darfield.

To add to the character of the home the Hardistys have sourced reclaimed items from character homes damaged in the

earthquakes which they have incorporated into the design.

Arched doorways and an interesting circular window in an internal wall of the house make the house feel unique and give it a sense of history.

Avoiding the in vogue open plan designs of many modern New Zealand homes, the Hardistys have chosen to have several separate living areas to provide for their teenage children’s need for independence.

The house was designed by an architect who lives in his own straw bale home. It is timber framed with only some sections of the house containing straw bales, which are used for insulation rather than load bearing purposes.

The outside is clad with Linea board and aerated concrete which will be plaster finished, so the house will not have the traditional look of a

“We’d already made friends and had jobs. We’d already decided to stay.”

Lindsey works in banking and will soon take on the role of manager at the new Westpac branch in Rolleston. Neil is an audiometrist with Triton.

The earthquakes have added challenges to the build which had to be put on hold because the couple couldn’t get insurance for two years because they weren’t existing insurance clients. They’ve also faced rent hikes while they’ve waited. While waiting for insurance they went ahead and bought their West Melton section and purchased a container which they’ve slowly been filling with treasure for their house build.

Neil went on a two day course to learn how to work with the straw. The couple have employed a builder but are doing a lot of the straw bale and clay work themselves.

The Hadistrys began their build in February and hope to have it completed by the end of September. ¢

The family moved from Wirral in England five years ago with the idea New Zealand would be a great place to raise

their three children. “We came over on a work visa with the view to staying. I’d liked the sound of New Zealand since I was a boy — the blue sky, the green fields and the mountains. In 2007 we asked ourselves, where’s the safest place to bring up a family and we decided Christchurch,” Neil said with a hint of irony.

Cold weather calls for caution u by Ngaire Tinning, Selwyn road safety co-ordinator

The frosty and icy winter mornings have arrived.

It is a timely reminder that we need to allow a little more time in the morning to warm up the car, defrost the windscreen, windows and mirrors before we set off.

When out on the road, we also need to be aware that there may be frost and ice on the roads making them slippery.

Drive slower than you normally would — it only takes a split second to lose control in wet and icy conditions.

Avoid sudden braking and turning movements that could cause you to skid.

Accelerate smoothly and brake gently.

It is also wise to increase your following distance as it takes longer to stop on slippery roads.

It is always important to watch for stretches of the road that are shaded by tall trees and shelter belts. These are very common in the Selwyn District, particularly in our rural areas. Some of these areas of road see little or no sun during the day and often do not thaw completely. This winter, many people from Selwyn District will be going to the

local ski fields or travelling across to the West Coast.

This highway and the side roads are regularly affected by severe winter conditions, which means a real chance of coming across ice, snow, high winds and slips. Therefore, if you are planning to travel, it is always worth keeping a watch on the weather and road conditions a few days before you go.

Also check the conditions just before you leave as winter conditions can change or deteriorate very quickly. There is excellent driver information available on the internet and an 0800 telephone number if you need an updated road report or additional information.

Frost is more severe at daybreak, so be prepared for this after it becomes light. While it may not be frosty at 6am, it could be an hour or two later.

When planning to travel during winter, always travel the longer distances in daylight as this is when the visibility is best and ice and snow are less likely

WINe AND FOOD

Since we got together last time to talk about wine and food, we have done a fair bit of tasting.

Whereas in the past our focus has been singularly the wine, we are finding more and more that the interest is towards the total experience of food and wine together.

We were recently invited to do a radio interview and tasting with a radio station in Florida which was a first for us. The station focusses on wine and food so we asked our Superchef friend Graeme Fife to conjure up some great recipes that we could match with our own True & Daring Rieslings to share with the United States’ listeners.

Armed with some wine samples it wasn’t long before Graeme’s creative juices started and before you could say ‘World Cup’ we had four unique recipes

in our inbox. Now of course we had to do the ‘taste’ test. Remember rule number one from last month — always taste.

The experience was brilliant — most especially to see how well the balance of the dishes complimented the balance of the wine. I know we’ve matched it with our own True & Daring Rieslings, but we are confident that any off-dry Riesling will be a great match.

Of the recipes that night we have picked pork short ribs with charred corn salad to share with you today. The pork ribs are marinated in a perfect balance of subtle Asian flavours including lime, fish sauce, palm sugar and garlic then

cooked to a sticky, finger licking, divine, delicious … I think you get the picture.

Just like the pork rib dish, wine is all about balance. The recipe has its building blocks of ingredients in varying quantities. Similarly wine has its structure being acidity, sweetness, alcohol, tannin, oak etc. The relationship between these elements, as with the ingredients of a recipe, determine what you experience when you taste.

Much of the balance for wine starts in the vineyard, but it also takes some sensitivity in the winery to nurture the process so that the varietal characteristics and the seasonal influences can shine through. We always feel like the taste of the wine takes us back into the vineyard the day we picked the grapes.

Next time you pour a glass of wine, hold that sip in your mouth and swirl it around for a moment and think about the balance. Is it ‘too sweet, too acidic, too high in alcohol, too strong in one dominant flavour’ or is it, in the words of Goldilocks, ‘just right’?
