The 19-year-old former Lincoln High School student is one of 20 finalists in this year’s Miss Universe New Zealand beauty pageant, with the grand final taking place at Auckland’s Sky City on August 4.

Abigail said it had been the most amazing three months of her life after being selected as a finalist in the competition back in May. She said the highlight so far had been the finalists’ retreat in Thailand where she and the other contestants were flown.

“It was an incredible experience.

We went to Bangkok and Pattaya and visited a sanctuary, which helps to protect tigers by breeding them and rehabilitating them back into the wild.

“We got to hang out with baby tigers, which was a real highlight for me.

They were two-month-old babies and really beautiful.”

She said she found the entrepreneurial challenge one of the toughest moments of the contest so far.

The contestants were charged with organising a fundraising event to raise money for the children’s charity Variety.

“It took me a while to come up with an event, which we finally ran just three weeks ago, and I received some great help from locals to get it organised,” Abigail said.

“While I was pleased with the eventual result — if I had more time I think I could have done it better.”

Grants have previously funded projects including restoring chimney stacks, earthquake strengthening, window replacements, tree trimming or pruning and roof repairs.

The Selwyn District Council says priority is given to items listed in the Selwyn District Plan.

“The heritage fund can be used to pay for part of the cost of restoration or protection work and applicants will also need to fund some of this cost

from other sources. Funding cannot be used for routine maintenance or for improvements, which are of personal or commercial benefit.”

Previous recipients include the former Dunsandel Methodist Church, Hororata Anglican Parish Hall, Southbridge Hall, The Parish of All Saints Church in Prebbleton and St Andrew’s Church in Glentunnel. Back to school The Selwyn District Council is asking drivers to stay alert for children as they return to school after the holidays this week.

p Selwyn drivers are being reminded to be aware of school children returning to school after the holiday break

Nearly 10,000 Selwyn children will be travelling to school this week following their two-week holiday break.

A council spokesperson said many of these young people will be getting off and on school buses, in and out of cars and walking, biking and scooting to and from school.

“It’s important for road users to remember the only time drivers must stop for pedestrians is on a pedestrian (zebra) crossing, at a school road patrol or kea crossing when the stop lollipops are out, and when pedestrians have a green man at traffic signals.”

Key tips for children and parents getting ready for term three include:

• Be bright — be seen on your way to school, ask your school for a safety vest.

• Tackle the routes with your child talking about sneaky driveways and blind corners.

• Get out and active together to reduce the chaos at the school gate.

• Wear your helmets — this goes for caregivers too, young people are watching you!

Another lifestyle block near Inglewood is under Notice of Direction while followup testing is done.

“Big, small, lifestyle or intensive/ extensive, any farm operation with cattle is at risk, and the owners and staff have a part to play in the biosecurity of the sector,” Mr Lewis says.

“Outside Canterbury and Southland it is understandable that many small block holders were not aware of the implications of Mycoplasma bovis for them.

“But there is a wealth of information out there, and everyone with cattle needs to do their homework.”

Stock movements carry the highest risk for spreading of Mycoplasma bovis.

Restrictions have been placed on all known risk properties, so the risks of buying infected calves are low — but not zero.

“So ask before you buy, find out where the animals have come from, register yourself with NAIT, make sure the animals you are buying all have NAIT tags and don’t let them off the

truck or pick them up unless they do,” Mr Lewis says.

He says feeding infected milk is the second highest risk of spreading M bovis.

“Milk that has the lowest risk of containing M bovis bacteria comes in the form of calf milk replacer powder, acidified milk or pasteurised milk.

“If you’re feeding whole milk, do not feed milk from cows under treatment for mastitis or other illnesses. This milk should be discarded. These cows are more likely to shed M bovis into their milk than healthy cows.”

Selwyn District Council is reminding residents to be careful about what they flush down the toilet.

Last year the council spent around $50,000 to clean out sewer pump stations, which had become clogged by items the system was unable to handle.

Council’s assets manager, Murray Washington, said residents should limit what they flush to the three Ps. “Only three things should disappear after the button is pressed — pee, poo and (toilet) paper,” Mr Washington said.

“Flushing items other than the three Ps costs a substantial amount each year, in unclogging blockages and repairs.”

He said a major issue had been the use of products often described as ‘flushable’ wet wipes, with more than half of the blockages found in the Selwyn system being caused by the wipes.

“Despite the product name and description, these products don’t break down in the system and cause frequent blockages.

“While we understand wet wipes have become popular, we want the public to throw them out instead of flushing them. Flushing the wipes causes a lot of damage to our systems.”

He said a wide range of products regularly causes headaches for the council team after finding the remains in sewer systems.

They’ve included: latex products like gloves and condoms, wet wipes,

“These items don’t break down or dissolve in water and can cause major blockages in pumps and within the sewer network itself,” Mr Washington said. ¢

The event, delivered by local sheep farmer Joe Catherwood, and Courtenay A&P Show president Jane Jenkins, allowed parents to find out what’s involved in raising a pet lamb.

The supper room at Kirwee Hall was filled with the sound of bleating lambs and excited children for the afternoon.

Mr Catherwood brought along two ewes and their day-old lambs to the event while the children and their families were taught how to raise and train lambs to compete in the pet section of the local A&P show.

He also brought along whey milk powder, bottles, leads and Woolovers — jackets made of wool for weak or orphan lambs. “The trick to teaching a lamb to lead is food. It’s all about food,” Mr Catherwood told the children.

“On show day, put some of your lamb’s favourite treats in your pocket just in case you need to bribe it.”

Jane Jenkins reminded the children to take responsibility for their lambs and encouraged the youngsters into showing their lambs.

“The pet lamb classes are split by age group with a dress up section. The judges will be looking for well-behaved lambs that are walking with you and aren’t being pulled along.”

The sale’s organiser and scout group leader, Makereta Roper, said the scout group had already collected 27 pallets of books, and her team of volunteers and 122 Keas, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers were busy sorting through the most number of books ever presented at the annual sale. She is promising fiction and non-fiction on just about every subject under the sun.

“It just gets bigger and bigger,” she said. “And it is wonderful to have

such a high level of support from our community.”

Ms Roper says this year’s sale is a fundraiser to help two scouts and one support adult leader from Lincoln attend the Australia Jamboree in Adelaide later this year.

The sale, which is in the Lincoln Scout Den, North Belt, Lincoln, takes place on Friday, August 3 from 6pm to 8pm and again on Saturday, August 4 from 9am to 3pm. ¢

Rolleston has made a winning return to top-flight netball with a win over premier competition leaders Broadfield at the Lincoln Event Centre on Saturday.

Rolleston, which was promoted from the Premier two competition for round three of the premiership, held off Broadfield to take the match by just one goal, 55–54.

With all points cleared for round three Greenpark B finds itself top of the table on points differential after it upset defending champions Lincoln.

Greenpark B withstood all that Lincoln could throw at it, including some aggressive defence, to outplay the youthful Lincoln side, taking the match 55–46. No such joy for the Greenpark A side as it was outplayed by Southbridge,

Prebbleton has reinforced its title credentials with a win over Ellesmere division one rugby high-fliers Waihora on the weekend.

Prebbleton handed the table-topping Waihora its first defeat of the season with a close fought 21–19 win at the Canterbury Country combined champ’s home ground in Tai Tapu.

The win moves Prebbleton into third place on the competition ladder and in line for a play-off spot.

The win also helped Darfield close the gap on Waihora at the top of the table to just one point. Darfield had helped itself to maintain contact with Waihora with a come from behind win to beat defeating champions Southbridge at Southbridge on Saturday afternoon.

Darfield was the first to score in the match when centre Dave Bennett broke through the Southbridge line to score after 10 minutes.

Darfield launched a series of raids on the Southbridge try line and had a try ruled out for being held up. However, the visitors kept the pressure on and with five minutes remaining Blair McIlroy burst through a number of tackles to score what was the match-winning try.

McIlroy and brother Scott, making a rare appearance for the Darfield seniors this season, were both on hand to receive the McIlroy Sheat Brothers Cup from Southbridge stalwart Michael Sheat at the end of the match.

Despite the loss, Southbridge remains in the top four, one point behind third-placed Prebbleton.

A vision for Rolleston’s town centre Earlier this year the Selwyn District Council approved a plan outlining the broad location of key elements of the proposed new Rolleston Town Centre.

A master plan for Rolleston town centre was originally adopted by the council in 2014 after extensive community consultation.

The newly-approved Bulk and Location Plan sets out a vision for a town centre, located on what is currently part of Rolleston Reserve, showing where the various elements of the proposed town centre should be located.

Council’s major projects property manager, John Reid, said the location plan offers a number of key advantages.

“It clearly gives prominence to the library and community space as the anchor activity for the town centre,” Mr Reid said.

“This has always been the primary focus of the plan — it’s about enhancing our community space, so it takes priority.

The retail activity in the town centre is envisaged to include a mix of smaller businesses and medium format operations. The town square, which provides a formal outdoor gathering space, is located between the library and community centre and the retail and hospitality areas. SPOTLIGHT ON Rolleston lighting up Rolleston recently welcomed its first township traffic lights, but six more sets of lights are to be installed over the next decade around the town and neighbouring Lincoln.

Alongside the two sets of lights already installed in Rolleston, another two are scheduled as part of the Long Term Plan, while four sets are set to be installed in Lincoln.

The two recently installed lights in Rolleston are on Rolleston Drive/ Masefield Drive, and at Hoskyns Road/ Jones Road.

The two new projects, which are set to be completed over the next three years, will see traffic lights replacing the roundabouts at Tennyson/Springston Rolleston/Lowes Road and at Rolleston Drive/Tennyson Street.

Asset manager transportation, Andrew Mazey, says the new Rolleston Drive/Tennyson Street lights are designed to work in with the town centre development.

“We would like to coordinate this work in with the construction of the marquee town centre build of the new community centre and library.”

For Mr Mazey and his team, this work is about future-proofing a continually growing town.

“With Rolleston, we understand that the community is continuing to grow, and we will continue to monitor the town to ensure that traffic flow is kept steady and that we best service the community.”

The council is also working alongside the New Zealand Transport Agency to help improve access to Rolleston.

“Continuing on from the Christchurch Southern Motorway project we have been working alongside NZTA to bring improvements with developing and

changing future access to the town.”

Like Rolleston, Lincoln has also been experiencing significant growth, and a beautification process of Gerald Street will run alongside the installation of new traffic lights in the village.

Four sets of traffic lights are set to be installed at intersections along Gerald Street. They will be at Gerald/ West Belt, Gerald/Veron Drive, Gerald/ Springs Road and Gerald/James and Edward Street. Mr Mazey says these will be hugely important to help preserve the village feel of Lincoln.

“With the transformation and beautification of Gerald Street, developing good traffic flow will help increase the user experience for those living and visiting Lincoln, as well as helping those on foot and cycling through the village.“ Mr Mazey says the travel habits of Lincoln University students is a factor in planning the new projects, and the Gerald Street/Springs Road traffic signals will help ensure the safety of those travelling to and from the University campus. ¢

Kitset shelters a good fit

Grazing stock in paddocks will often find shelter by huddling together, ducking for cover under or behind a treeline, or hide in a valley, but for other animals such as donkeys, horses or goats a small shelter needs to be provided.

There are many options and sizes available in kitset form, and several New Zealand companies provide information on their wares.

The kitset option provides a shelter as a flat pack unit with all parts included, and all you need to do is put it together in an afternoon, preferably in the position you need to use it! Depending on the size and the animals the shelter is for, you may choose to build it on skids to enable towing to a new patch of grass.

If building isn’t your thing, or time isn’t on your side, you can hire a local builder to install it, although a certain amount of negotiation may be required regarding price and time availability!

You can also have a shelter constructed by the retail company and delivered complete, and lifted into position ready-for-use. Many lifestyle block owners prefer this method as it is an instant answer to an immediate problem if bad weather is forecast.

The beauty of having the ability to gather together a hammer and nails to construct the shelter yourself is that you can personalise it to incorporate a small

In the case of goat shelters, you may need a small yard with a milking area or even a raised platform to save your back when hoof trimming. Your shelter building may also be used for feed storage, a small amount of hay, or have a tack shed added onto it. Before

purchasing it is advisable to have a solid plan around your requirements, then research the plans readily available from retailers — a much quicker option than drafting something yourself or ‘making it up as you go’. ¢

If chickens are happy, warm, and feeling secure they’ll repay with enough eggs from each hen to keep you in cooked breakfasts, pavlovas and baked cakes for months!

Chickens like to have a regular, quality food supply, and also enjoy good draught-free shelter, out of the rain and hot sun. If they are free-range, the shelter you provide can be something as simple as a hay shed, implement shed, or a treeline, as long as they have somewhere to lay those precious eggs for you.

It is possible to partially free-range your hens by letting them out for the afternoon after they have ‘done their duty’, bringing them back into their house at night, to safety from predators.

The house should be secure from all weathers, and provide next boxes as well as poles to roost on at night.

If letting them out isn’t an option, your hen house can provide similar accommodation, and a connected run gives them a place to scratch and pick at the ground as chickens like do. A run can be as elaborate as a netting compound complete with a roof to keep wild birds or cats out, or as simple as some sticks of timber nailed together,

Other options, if you’re not so handy on the tools, is to recycle other items into what you need.
