The 21-year-old, who works for Holland Collision Centre in Rolleston, has just returned from Leipzig in Germany where he has been competing as part of the New Zealand ‘Tool Blacks’ team taking part in the international WorldSkills Championships. The championships pit country against country in a series of tasks across a wide range of trades, including aircraft maintenance, auto body repair, sheet metal technology, electrical installation and joinery. The age limit for most categories is 22 years and under. Competing in the autobody repair category, Ackers finished sixth out of 20 competitors from different countries and also earned enough points to be awarded a Medallion of Excellence, one of only four of the New Zealand team of 13 tradesmen and women who did so.
“It was an extremely intense competition and part of that is because you know you are representing all New Zealand panelbeaters,” Ackers said. “It was quite an amazing experience to be a part of a competition like this and like any competition training and being mentally prepared are keys to doing well.” Among the tasks Ackers had to perform in the four days of competition included diagnosing and repairing a number of auto body issues including chassis straightening and dent repair, using skills such as welding and metal finishing. He had won a number of regional and national competitions to become eligible for selection into the ‘Tool Blacks’ and while this year’s WorldSkills Championships is the last he can enter, because of the age restrictions, Ackers is still keen to stay involved and help whoever is next selected. ¢
