Currently the Darfield commuter has one return trip a day, leaving Darfield at 7.15am with the return leg leaving Christchurch at 5.30pm, stopping in Kirwee, West Melton, Yaldhurst and Riccarton.

Red Bus chief executive Paul McNoe said they are currently assessing the need for a second return trip.

“It is clear from our growing patronage and the growth that areas like West Melton and Darfield are experiencing that we need to investigate the possibility of a second service.”

Mr McNoe says a return trip around 3.30pm-4pm may be viable but they are unsure as to what time a second service into Christchurch should leave Darfield.

“We need to determine the best time for the service to leave Darfield and we would like to hear from people on this rather than just respond to individual requests as obviously there is a significant base cost.”

Selwyn Central Community Board member Bruce Russell from West Melton said a second service would certainly be of value to the community.

“With over 2,500 households already in the West Melton catchment area I imagine there would be some support for a second service, not only from commuters but also from people who want to do their shopping or whatever in town but don’t want

to spend all day there waiting for the return trip.”

Mr Russell said a mid-morning service into town may be appropriate and may be the bus company would like to trial the service to assess its viability.

“The reality is the service would have to be viable for the bus company and a trial would help them assess that.

“If it doesn’t get the support from the community and the

company discontinues it then people can’t complain.”

Mr Russell said he will be bringing the issue up at next week’s meeting of the West Melton Residents Association meeting.

Meanwhile, Paul McNoe of the Red Bus company said they are keen to hear from people who would use the second service and people can contact them by email to redbus@redbus.co.nz. ¢

Swimming skills for life

Christina Clarkson of Darfield has been teaching aquatic skills for over 20 years in the Malvern area and says swimming is one of the basic skills of life.

“I first began teaching swimming because I wanted my kids to learn and I didn’t want to have to take them to Christchurch for lessons.”

Christina says while some survival strategies come naturally to children, swimming skills are something that need to be mastered.

“If you’ve got a fire on your backside you’ll run, but not every kid could save themselves in the water by swimming.”

Christina says the most rewarding students to teach are those who have a fear of the water as it takes time to break down the fear and to build courage.

“It’s that smile on their face when it clicks and its working. It’s really got a big wow factor. That’s your reward.

“I’m not doing it for the money. I’m doing it as a service. I do it because I enjoy it and there is a need for it locally.”

Christina has also been involved in the Darfield Swim Club with Darfield resident Helen Creamer for the last 20 or so years. She has served on the Darfield Pool Committee, including a stint as president.

Playgroup spokesperson Kristy Spackman said the playgroup building located inside the Burnham Camp grounds was broken into sometime in the last two weeks.

Illness brings silver linings Last year The Record brought you the story of three-year-old Charlotte Park and her battle with leukaemia. Five months after Charlotte and her parents Paula and Tristan received the bad news reporter Belinda Cullen-Reid caught up with the family and discovered that while it has been a tough road to recovery it has also been paved with silver linings.

Charlotte cuddles up with her mum on the couch. It’s the day after her latest chemotherapy treatment and she’s not feeling too good.

All she wants to do is sleep as her little body struggles to cope with the effects of the medication combined with her leukaemia symptoms. But this determined little fighter’s curiosity soon gets the better of her and she

perks up, wanting to know what’s going on.

Her hair is in three little pigtails tied with coloured bands, but her sensitive skin is bothering her and she wants the bands out.

Paula explains that Charlotte’s hair has just started falling out more noticeably in the last two weeks, but Charlotte is not concerned.

“She’s quite happy to lose her hair.

She’ll get a smiley bead of courage.

Charlotte is almost through her sixmonth intensive treatment and will soon enter a two-year maintenance programme.

The treatment has been hard on Charlotte who has suffered seizures, high blood pressure, diabetes and partial paralysis in her throat and nerve damage in her eye as a result of her medication.

Surprisingly Paula is upbeat and while things have certainly been tough for the family she is encouraged by the support the family has found in the community.

“We’d been in Rolleston for five years [before Charlotte got sick] and only knew one family before this. At times I’d felt quite isolated. Now we feel like we’re part of the community.

The support has been amazing,” Paula says.

Paula had been a working mother before Charlotte’s illness, but now confesses to enjoying spending time at

home with Charlotte and the couple’s other daughter five-year-old Grace.

Paula says that she has noticed a positive change in her husband Tristan too, who is now more focussed on helping others and would one day like to join the local volunteer fire brigade.

Fundraising efforts are continuing for the family, including a fun day to be held on February 2 at Rolleston Reserve.

Fundraising spokesperson Julia Mountford said they were hoping to have pony rides, bouncy castles and face painting.

“The fire brigade will do a whack the car. There will be ambulances, fire engines and police cars for children to explore, a digger, and water tanker, displays from local sports groups, athletics club for children to have a go, car boot sale, sausage sizzle, coffee van, candy floss and cake stall.”

The West Melton Fun Day last Saturday symbolised everything that is good about living in a rural community.

Held at the St Paul’s Anglican Church grounds, the fun day was like stepping back in time. The day was invitingly warm. Visitors arrived to the sounds of old-time music playing across loud speakers. A cheeky clown delighted both children and adults with his quick and quirky slapstick humour. Everything was free — the face painting, the balloon

animals, the cups of tea, coffee and cordial, the sausages and sauce.

There were three-legged races and gumboot throwing competitions. Best of all on offer was the friendly country hospitality and the sense of being part of a community that this year celebrates its 150th Anniversary of the founding of West Melton. ¢

Exhibition kicks art year off New Lincoln library is nearer to opening Selwyn art lovers are in for a treat with the first art exhibition of 2014 at the Selwyn Gallery according to Malvern Community Arts Council’s arts coordinator Ingrid Cole.

The exhibition, which opens in the gallery in Darfield on January 31 features works by Marian Maguire and Nigel Buxton who together run PaperGraphica, a highly regarded gallery in Christchurch specialising in original lithographs, woodcuts and etchings.

“We are thrilled to kick off the New Year p The works of Christchurch artists Marian Maguire and Nigel Buxton will feature at the Sewlyn Gallery this month with this exciting exhibition,” Ingrid Cole said.

For this exhibition Nigel Buxton exhibits prints entitled This Pioneering Life, while Marian Maguire’s work is from Colonial Encounters which features mythical characters meeting human ones.

Maguire has exhibited widely throughout New Zealand and her work is represented in public collections including Te Papa and the Christchurch Art Gallery alongside works

The new $3.3 million Lincoln Library has been officially blessed and work is continuing to prepare the building for opening.

The library was blessed recently at a dawn ceremony involving representatives from Te Taumutu Runanga, Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe, library staff and other guests.

The ceremony involved a sod, originally dug before construction of the library began, being returned to a planter box at the site and a blessing of the building.

Last week library staff and volunteers moved over 18,000 books and other items from the old library into the new building.

Selwyn District Council’s community services manager Lesley Symington says until the new library is able to open its doors to the public, council’s mobile library will be visiting Lincoln so people can still pick up and drop off books during the closure.

An official opening of the new library is expected to take place in early February. The new library and service centre building is more than three times the size of the current library and is located on Gerald Street, beside the current library.

The unexpected arrival of visitors can be a pleasure. Chatting, laughing and exaggerating experiences with a good cup of coffee or a glass of wine should be encouraged.

When the afternoon disappears and it’s time for dinner it is good to have some ideas of how to feed those surprise guests and the meal I often turn to is very basic, easy and can be played around with according to taste and what you have in your fridge and pantry.

Ingredients for salad Chicken Salad vegetables: lettuce tomato avocado walnuts sunflower or pumpkin seeds Grilled halloumi or parmesan Olive oil Salt and pepper Sauce options Chicken stock Wine Cream Method 1. Chicken can be defrosted reasonably quickly if there are none sitting in the fridge ready for action. Start by putting a griddle or heavy fry pan on the heat and get the pan hot.

2. Rub the chicken with olive oil, season with salt and pepper, put in the pan and cook.

Cooking time can vary depending on how thick the chicken pieces are but ensure they are not pink inside or overcooked.

the outsides are crispy brown and sometimes put them in the oven at this stage 180C to finish cooking.

While the chicken is underway get hold of the lettuce from the garden or fridge and arrange on a large platter.

The next ingredients for the salad can be whatever you enjoy eating or happen to have on hand — tomatoes and avocado are my usual and often I scatter over walnuts, sunflower or pumpkin seeds that have been dry toasted.

Grilled halloumi adds another dimension or grate over some parmesan.

Dress the salad with olive oil but remember not to drown the salad.

Once the chicken is cooked remove from the heat and put aside for a few minutes.

In the pan you should have lovely sticky bits on the bottom.

Loosen these off the bottom with a wooden spoon and add some form of liquid — stock, wine, cream or just water and keep stirring as this sauce thickens.

Add the chicken for a minute or two then remove and serve with the salad.

For a more substantial offering, a pile of fluffy rice with the chicken and juices on top, salad and crusty bread is perfect. Or swap the rice for a baked potato. ¢

The ‘Five Plus A Day’ message encourages people to eat five or more servings of fresh fruit and vegetables every day for health, taste and variety.

Here are a few tips on how to achieve this and the benefits of following the message.

What’s a serving?

It’s about a handful and you should use your own hand. So, a child’s serving will be smaller than an adult’s. When dishing up leafy greens, use slightly more, or in the case of diced fruit, slightly less.

A serving of legumes, such as beans, will also count as a serving of vegetables.

Why does it matter?

According to a Ministry of Health report, Looking Upstream, a lifetime of not eating enough fruit and vegetables contributed to the same number of deaths in 1997 as alcohol, drugs and acts of violence combined.

Cancer Society research concludes that if we all ate just half a serving more a day of fruit and veg, 330 lives a year would be saved. The trouble is the Society also found that most of those not eating enough wrongly believe they are.

Strong evidence supports the link between cancer and a diet lacking in fruit and vegetables, as well as heart disease, atherosclerosis and stroke, while an increased intake of fruit and vegetables can play a role in preventing birth defects, cataract formation, hypertension, asthma, diver ticulosis, obesity and diabetes.

One exercise craze that’s taken off this summer in Selwyn is the fitness boot camp style of workout.

Scott Lee of Rolleston is an ex-army fitness instructor who knows how to push his clients to achieve maximum results.

Help with muscle cramp I had someone call me about severe body wide cramps.

These were not the common night cramps in your leg. They affected her in her torso and many other parts. She was under the care of her GP for the problem. The most common reason for an unexpected difficulty with reading and writing is dyslexia, a condition which affects one in every ten people.

Dyslexia affects people differently — some are only mildly affected, with slow reading, poor spelling or messy handwriting, while others are severely limited and cannot read or write at all.

Of course, there may be other reasons why a child struggles to learn.

Some children find all learning hard and have been slow to develop all along.

Others may have a medical condition which affects their learning, such as hearing loss or poor eyesight.

Some children have been disadvantaged by their home circumstances, which can affect their ability to focus on their school work (for example, parents separating, grief and loss, frequent changes of school).
