The Selwyn Athletic Club is celebrating its most successful South Island Colgate Games …

Rolleston College will take in just over 210 Year 9 students in its first year of operation while Rolleston’s newest primary school, Lemonwood Grove, is preparing to take up to 80 pupils when it too opens its doors for the first time on January 30.

Rolleston College principal Steve Saville said the excitement is really building.

“We have some very excited staff and members of the board of trustees, and part of my job at the moment is

keeping a lid on that as we put on the finishing touches.”

Over the next five years Rolleston College will be taking in a new influx of Year 9 students with the school roll expected to hit 1,100 by 2021. The high school has been built to house up to 1,800 students.

Mr Saville said the last 18 months has been a rewarding time since he got a phone call in the middle of the night in New York telling him he had the principal’s job at Rolleston College.

Summer of fun The holidays may be coming to an end and school is looming for many youngsters, but Selwyn’s summer of fun continues throughout the month and beyond.

More than 60 events are coming to the district as part of the Selwyn District Council’s Summer in Selwyn event programme, running from January to April. The ever popular Teddy Bears’ Picnic will be returning to Rolleston Reserve this Wednesday while family picnics are planned at Tai Tapu, Springfield, Springston, West Melton, Leeston, Lincoln, Burnham and Prebbleton. Four Music on the Green sessions will take place at Leeston, Lincoln, Darfield and Rolleston.

“These sessions are a great chance to enjoy summer’s balmy evenings while being entertained by great local musicians,” a council spokesperson

said. Outdoor family movie evenings are also planned during February and March while, for the more adventurous, a series of summer skate jams will be held at Darfield, Rolleston, Leeston, Tai Tapu, Lincoln, West Melton, Glentunnel and Prebbleton.

This week the Selwyn Aquatic Centre is hosting five events as part of its week long Pool Fest, while community pool parties will be held at Darfield and Southbridge later in the month.

Council’s Meet your Street events will also continue through until late March.

If Selwyn residents see smoke, particularly in rural areas of the district, they are being asked to ensure there is a genuine emergency before calling the fire service.

One of those school’s Mr Saville has been working with is Lemonwood Grove which will become Rolleston’s fifth primary school when it opens on January 30.

Lemonwood Grove School (Te Uru Tarata), has been built on a four-hectare site on East Maddisons Road, to cater for anticipated population growth in the southern area of Rolleston.

Founding Principal Sean Bailey said they are super excited to be opening with a starting roll of around 50 students.

“Over the last 18 months the Establishment Board of Trustees has worked tirelessly to ensure our school will cater for the diverse needs of our new community.

“Together with the leadership team, they have developed a clear emerging strategic focus for Lemonwood Grove School, underpinned by a clear vision, ‘the best of you as you’, and four connected values — grit, responsibility, integrity and thinking.

“Our school has been designed for an eventual capacity of 750 students, however it is being built in two stages.

Stage one will provide ‘learning landscapes’ for 450 students alongside infrastructure for the full 750 students including administration, hall and playground spaces.”

Meanwhile, Rolleston College is holding an open evening to allow the local community to get a look around the facility before its official opening.

“This will be held on January 24 between 4pm and 8pm, and will give the wider community, not just those families with children at the school, a chance to see what we are offering,” Mr Saville said. ¢

An external academic audit of Lincoln University has given Selwyn’s largest tertiary institute a pass mark, but is encouraging management to pick up their game.

Lincoln has redeveloped its hotel management degree to include tourism, and in 2017 is offering a Bachelor of Commerce in Hotel and Tourism Management.

The audit, carried out late last year by the Academic Quality Agency (AQA), and is part of a series of evaluations given to all New Zealand universities, has found Lincoln students receive excellent support during their transition to university life and are well looked after throughout their studies.

However, the AQA said it did have issues with recommendations from its 2012 audit not being implemented.

Irrigation loan paid back

New pool fencing rules

Selwyn District Council is reminding locals that recent changes to national legislation on swimming pool fencing could affect them.

Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton says an $8 million council loan to the company behind the district’s largest irrigation scheme was justified now the money has been paid back.

Selwyn District Council has received full repayment of the loan to Central Plains Water Limited which it approved in November 2015.

Subsequently, Central Plains Water progressively drew down a total principal of $6.26 million, which has been repaid in full along with interest of $188,000.

Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton said the loan was provided by council to assist with design work on stage two of the Central Plains Water scheme.

“The prompt repayment of the loan confirms that the council’s backing for the scheme has been well-founded,” mayor Broughton said.

“Throughout our involvement with this project, the council has been confident about supporting the scheme, on the strength of the potential returns to the district. “The scheme will bring significant benefits to the wider

Stage one of the Central Plains Water scheme, which covers 20,000 hectares between the Rakaia and Hororata Rivers, began operating in 2015.

The Colgate Games, which has been running for more than 20 years, is the pinnacle of children’s athletics, catering for children aged 7 to 14 years, in a range of track and field events.

This year was the fourth time the Selwyn Athletic Club has attended the games since the club was established, with 35 athletes travelling to Invercargill for the event which was run over three days. The Selwyn athletes brought home a total of 17 medals including 7 gold medals, with the undoubted star of the show Maia Broughton who secured four individual golds in the girls’ Grade 14 division, winning gold in her 100m, 200m, 400m and long jump events. Her outstanding effort was recognised by games organisers when she was awarded one of five Nick Willis Scholarships awarded at the event. The scholarships are awarded to athletes who display outstanding performance and the recipients receive a donation to go towards sports gear, coaching and other resources, to help them toward their athletics goals.

Just like us, chickens and poultry are heat sensitive and need access to plenty of fresh clean water, especially over the summer months.

On really hot days make sure to check on your chickens. If temperatures reach 30 degrees or more, look for signs that could signal the birds need your help cooling down.

These can include looking lethargic and not moving around much, panting and spreading their wings from their body, or showing signs of pale or discoloured wattles.

In these cases you should move their enclosure to a cooler location and ensure they have access to plenty of water. Make sure you place their water in the shade so it keeps cool as well.

The summer months also means there can be more nocturnal activity and with this brings an increase in nighttime predators.

Make sure your coop is secure at night to deter these nocturnal visitors after a tasty snack.

Nutrition is also an important thing to maintain over the summer months and throughout the rest of the year.

If a bird is getting insufficient nutrition it may be susceptible to disease and result in a drop of egg production.

The wrong feed, too many treats, overcrowding and being prevented from getting to the feeders by another bird

can lead to serious deficiencies. Oyster shells contain high levels of calcium which is important to a laying birds diet to help with good quality shell production and digestion.

When hens eat the grit it is held in the crop and grinds the other food they eat down meaning they can get more of the nutrients out of their feed as well as offering a slow release of calcium into the bird’s system.

This is handy for non free ranging birds who cannot source their own

grit and is an essential for poultry on whole grain diets. If you do notice a decrease in egg production, check the lighting conditions and examine your birds for molting, stress, broodiness or disease and parasites, age or nutrition or water deprivation.

Changes to egg production can be caused by a number of environmental, physical, behavioural or emotional triggers. It’s every parent’s worst nightmare — a call you never want to receive or an accident you never want to discover, but according to WorkSafe more than 20% of injuries to those under 15 years of age occur on a farm.

Solving a furry problem We have all seen them, their eyes gleaming at us in the beam of a spotlight from a tree or the side of the road, but what do you do if you start seeing more and more possums around your property?

There are a few ways to tell if you have a possum problem. Defoliation or dead trees, especially of the northern rata variety, is one of the first significant signs.

Other signs include fruit trees being raided at night and possum dung around trees with fruits or flowers.

Possums are nocturnal and can be quite loud at night, so if you hear them running across the roof, or find TB infected possums during the day, it might be time to put some processes in place to get on top of the problem.

It is always beneficial to cooperate with your neighbours if they too have control processes in place. If you choose to use poisons, make

sure they are used appropriately and note down which ones have been purchased, where they were distributed and when.

If you decide to go down the firearms path ensure all licensing and legal requirements are met.

There are also many traps on the market. Make sure you get some that are humane and do not pose a threat to any other animals or people who may come across them. Jaw traps, if used, should be fixed on a tree well off the ground. With all these taken into account you should notice a drop in their population in no time and your flora and fauna will begin to flourish once more.

Summer holidays are well underway and many rural Canterbury children are making the most of presents received over Christmas and some of these might just be a brand new quad bike.

The excitement of having your own bike is an exhilarating prospect for kids, so is visiting a farm or lifestyle block and getting to drive one for the first time.

Although most parents are aware of the safety regulations when riding a farm bike, quite often children have witnessed their parents without a helmet.

Although proper safety habits are being implemented and practised a lot more than they were 10 years ago, if a child sees something their parents do then chances are they will think it is normal.

According to ACC figures more than 100 children hurt themselves on quad and farm bikes annually. About 28 are hospitalised and between three and six die each year. WorkSafe New Zealand has compiled a list of safety tips.

These include making sure a child is trained before letting them on the quad bike and teaching them to wear a helmet and boots at all times.

WorkSafe also discourages children from taking passengers or carrying

loads in case it affects their ability to handle the bike.

Parents are also advised to place limits on where they can go and at what speed.

Now is the perfect time to consider a quad bike safety plan and set out rules and restrictions.

Quad bikes can be a lot of fun when driven and used correctly. Not all children will have the same strength, judgement or skills needed to operate them.

Building a sustainable home The planning stage of building your own home is a crucial time in the overall process and can make a big difference in the future.

Good ventilation is also important when building a healthy home for your family, as high moisture levels are linked to health problems like asthma and eczema and is more difficult to heat.

Choose double glazing where possible to encourage passive heating and look into modern thermal window joinery.

Good design and material selection can achieve high standards of energyefficiency for little or no additional cost. ¢

Getting creative with pallets  by Anna Harding

For your next DIY venture why not use a wooden pallet? You’ll be recycling and saving money as most pallets are cheap or free.

Making them into coffee tables has become a favourite on the internet over the last few years, but what else can they be made into? A quick google search will give you about 1,770,000 results in 0.29 seconds.

Amongst the many different coffee table designs, there are things like a pallet garden, shelves, bicycle racks and animal feeders.

It doesn’t have to be all pallet either. If you have an old drum cut it in half horizontally and use pallet wood to give it legs and you have an animal feeder. Attach hooks or funky old drawer knobs to create a place to hang coats and bags, or take it into the kitchen to hang mugs.

Use pallet wood to paint your next masterpiece on for an extra rustic look. Paint or varnish the wood and use fairy lights to embellish your pallet creations. For tables place a sheet of glass over the top so you get a smooth surface, still with a rustic look. Make sure it is safe to use first and check for any spills or marks. Maybe the pallet was used

to transport chemicals? If you’re unsure don’t use it. Biosecurity New Zealand states that imported wood packaging must be pest free, treated, and certified. Pallets coming into New Zealand should have the ‘IPPC’ (International Plant Protection Convention) stamp, which shows that they are treated.

To comply, the wood has to be debarked, pest free, then heat treated (stamped HT DB) or fumigated with methyl bromide (stamped MB). Methyl bromide can be a harmful, so be sure to ask the person you’re getting them from or contact Biosecurity New Zealand if you are unsure.

So where can you get free or cheap pallets from? The best thing to do is ask around. First thing in the morning or late in the day can be some of the best times to ask. Farming shops, hardware shops and other places that sell heavy products should have them. Some crop farmers use them, and the local recycling centre or landfill could have some as well.

Ford’s new Escape sports utility vehicle carries the name of an old favourite, but offers technology which would have staggered belief in the heyday of its well-remembered namesake. Just how good is the replacement for the Ford Kuga in the blue oval line-up for 2017?

Stylistically, the Escape picks up the design cues of the Ford family with an aggressive new front end, giving it the crisp lines and angles common to the Ranger at the top end of the size spectrum and the Fiesta ST down in the compact class.

That same sense of definitive purpose and logic prevails within, with comfortable leather seats, a tactile, thick and sporty steering wheel and all the controls in just the right place — including the big touch screen which

commands the ‘brains’ of Ford’s SYNC III infotainment system. It’s a screen which gets a workout in other ways, too, as this is also where the Escape makes parking a matter of laser-guided precision.

As well as providing a generouslysized window for the colour reversing camera, the touch screen commands the Escape’s self-parking procedure, a ballet of technology in motion which can place you neatly in a parallel or side-byside spot without so much as a finger on the wheel.

This is impressive in a small runabout, but in an SUV which can swallow up a full-sized Kiwi bloke in the back seat with legroom to spare — and which has a cargo capacity that could lug major items of furniture — it’s some kind of voodoo.

The other interesting point about this model — the Titanium-specced diesel — is that unless you spotted the discreet badging you might mistake it for a much smaller, petrol-powered

Adventure on any street  by Andy Bryenton

The test riders and development engineers at Kawasaki are no strangers to the blisteringly fast, but their latest offering goes beyond the track and into territory that can even leave the tarmac behind.

Of course, the adventure bike market has grown massively in recent years, spurred perhaps by the success of televised journeys of discovery by modern day trailblazers like Michael Palin. But Kawasaki felt they could bring something new to the table, gleaning knowledge from their extensive racing heritage to add zest and accuracy to their new Versys 1000 model. They were right.

While the Versys shares its comfortable upright riding position with many other bikes in this bracket — a stance that allows riders to eat up the miles without feeling sore and weary at the end of the day — the heart of the beast and its long-travel, finely-honed suspension setup give the Versys the manners of a more velocitous machine.

Take that engine for example — not just content with delivering a torquey, quick-response 1,000cc inline four with lots of guts in the mid to low rev range,

Sheep and beef farmer confidence measured  by James Parsons, Chairman Beef + Lamb New Zealand

As part of ensuring we at Beef + Lamb New Zealand are relevant and delivering services you value, we carry out regular research through UMR Research.

We gather a range of performance and confidence indicators and assess Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s performance through the eyes of farmers.

It’s of no surprise that farmer confidence has taken a dip in the last four months, and that’s largely a tale of two species. Farmers with high beef numbers are more confident than those with sheep dominant enterprises.

Uncertainty over sheepmeat markets on the back of Brexit and declining wool prices has knocked confidence. Throw in a very wet spring across the country where young stock haven’t been ‘doing’, and it’s understandable that farmers are feeling uneasy right now.

There continues to be confidence in the long-term fundamentals of the sheep and beef industry, and farmers know they are producing a high quality, safe product for a growing global population with plenty of discerning customers.

The research has given us a good steer on some things that farmers rate as really important, but where they think we need to be doing better. They include

improving market access and market development opportunities for our beef and lamb in international markets.

You can read here what’s coming up in our new Market Development Plan and how we are developing New Zealand’s red meat sector story.

In terms of market access, we continue to work very closely with the government to ensure any Brexit impacts are minimised for our sector. One of the ways we keep government up to date with our activities is this newsletter which includes Brexit news.

Since writing that newsletter we met with Trade Minister Todd McClay last week and impressed on him the importance of maintaining our market access arrangements, ensuring stability for our lamb trade. I was encouraged that the minister is very aware of the importance of this to farmers and New Zealand.
