The awards recognise people with physical disabilities for their sporting achievements across the year. Both Sophie and Ella have had part of their left leg amputated, Ella’s through cancer as well as part of her right lung.

“Sophie is very successful and New Zealand’s most decorated Paralympian.

Ella is a member of the Selwyn Swimming Club and won three gold and four bronze medals at the Swimming New Zealand Open Championships in June.

“She also won four gold and five silvers at the Swimming New Zealand Short Course Championships in October,” said Junior sports manager Charlotte Pawson.

“Ella was up against some pretty tough competition and getting Junior Sportsperson of the year was a huge achievement. She also competed for New Zealand at the Para Swimming World Series in Melbourne, and we look forward to following her journey in the future.”

Selwyn residents, wheelchair racing athlete Montana Brown won Emerging Talent of the Year and brothers Celyn and Ieuan Edwards, both swimmers, were also accepted into the Parafed Academy Programme.

“Montana is one of the only local wheelchair racers and often trains by herself and also competes with the Selwyn Athletics Club. The others train with able-bodied groups at Selwyn Aquatic Centre.

years, and 2019 has seen her emerge into a competitive athlete, who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to training and competing. She competed at the national championships for the first time in March and has been setting New Zealand records for her classification at both age-group and senior level. She has an exciting few months ahead as she looks to compete in Australia in January for the very first time.

“Celyn and Ieuan have also competed at various national events. We also had our first-ever Junior Games in the South Island, and both Ella and

Montana attended the Halberg Games in Auckland, which is a big achievement.

The ParaFed Canterbury Academy Programme supports athletes and coaches who demonstrate a high level of commitment to their sport. Those selected in the academy programme receive a funding grant, assistance with sports planning and attend academy seminars.

“The 2019 ParaFed Canterbury Awards was again supported by McDonald’s Canterbury. Next year’s academy programme is proudly being supported by the PNZ Cyril Smith Legacy Fund.” 

Adding to the Tourette’s support network, Tiki the T-Rex has joined the crew as the group’s mascot bringing public awareness of the association and strength to children with the syndrome.

“The mascot idea started when a friend of one of our members drew him a T-Rex. He said when you say Tourette’s it sounds like T-Rex and he thought it could be his friend’s superpower,” says association executive director Robyn Twemlow.

“The whole story was quite coincidental, funny and cute as we didn’t have a mascot. We came up with a choice of names, and Tiki gained the most votes. We put a T-Rex on our camp shirts this year, and the campers found it quirky and loved it. It grabs people’s attention and puts it out there in a fun way, as the two words sound the same.

“We have had a busy year with Camp Twitch being a highlight. Families got together, and people didn’t have to hide their ticks as everyone understood them so they could be themselves.

“The awareness of Tourette’s is getting stronger, and we appreciate the support we are receiving as more people are becoming aware of the syndrome.

More children are being diagnosed as the compulsions are more widely recognised by medical professionals, which is a good thing.

“Tiki is a mascot and comfort for children as they love hugging these sorts of things. They can take on that

confidence and persona of being a mighty creature regardless of their tics.

“Our motto is ‘Tic loud and tic proud’ — which is why T-Rex is perfect. He will empower them to own having Tourette’s syndrome and not feel embarrassed about their tics or being who they are.

The T-shirts and soft toy are merchandise items to help us raise funds for what we do. I plan to add little vests for Tiki to wear to go with his unique personality.”

Kan tabs for kidneys The Kan Tabs for Kidney Kids Project is a way to generate revenue from recycled aluminium to support children with kidney disease or who need dialysis.

The funds raised in Christchurch are donated to Kidney Kids Canterbury to assist children with kidney disease in various ways.

“The Wigram Lions Club became involved when local school children decided to raise money for a friend who was unwell with kidney failure. Between our District E and District D up North we give quite a lot of money to help the children as they don’t get proper funding from the government,” says Wigram Lions Club member Raewyn Clearwater.

“People collect aluminium wine bottle tops, squashed cans, and ring tabs and anything aluminium including ladders, a motor — anything aluminium. We take these to the recycling centre on a regular basis and all money raised goes straight to Kidney Kids Canterbury.

“Jo Houghton at the Kidney Society works tirelessly with her team.

“They are just fantastic supporting children, so every time you collect and drop off your wine bottle lids or can tabs — you make a huge change

in many families lives.” The Wigram Lions Club recently handed over their latest donation.

“We appreciate this so much as it allows us to help support our local kidney kids with things that our trust (CKS Graeme Cox Youth Education Trust) may not cover, but are important to their overall wellbeing,” says Jo. “Every 18 months we get given around $3,000.

“The funds are used to help families with things such as bedsheets, decking timber to finish a deck for a youngster to get outside or a school uniform if someone received a transplant and can now go to school.

“We do real stuff with the help of the Lions Club donations.

“They are amazing, and we really appreciate the help we get. The tabs off cans, wine bottle tops and small aluminium pieces are what works.”

The Activation Space celebrates learning in Rolleston and was an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate local young people. Students created exhibits similar to a science fair showcasing learning across all year levels. There was no specific topic as the students celebrated their learning in whatever format that took, and the children were encouraged to talk about their exhibit.

“Children across all year levels were invited to create exhibits to showcase what they have learnt and discovered this year and presented their ideas alongside other local schools,” said West Melton School promotion administrator Rita Spadoni.

“We have had a fantastic year with various activities and sporting achievements. Our school entered the Rock Quest, the Christchurch

Schools’ Music Festival and the Grow Waitaha Canterbury DigiAwards. At the Canterbury athletics last week we placed second in year seven girls’ shot put with Nikita, and Ryder came third in year seven boys’ 60-metre sprint.”

The DigiAwards enables primary and intermediate students to design, develop, and showcase their digital outcomes.

The event encourages and celebrates the students’ digital creativity.

“Our learners enjoyed sharing their knowledge on banana DNA with the guidance of Dr Smalley and Mrs Busch.

It was a great opportunity for them to engage with the public and show what they have learnt through our science programme at our school.

People from around the world are choosing to call Selwyn home and become new Kiwi citizens here.

Since Februar y last year, 559 people of 56 different nationalities have taken the oath of allegiance at the council’s monthly citizenship ceremony.

British citizens were the most common taking up New Zealand nationality, providing 132 new citizens, followed by South Africa (91), India (51) and the Philippines (39).

However, the figures show people coming here from across the globe, including Argentina, Cambodia, Kenya, Iceland, Uzbekistan and Zambia.

For some, it was more akin to a return home. Tyler Hokianga, who gained his New Zealand citizenship in June, was raised in Australia.

However, it was a visit to see his parents back here in New Zealand that sparked a desire to embrace his Kiwi heritage and officially become a Kiwi.

Daniel Dilkes, originally from Canada, echoed the words of many of the new citizens who described finding a sense of home here. “I came here for a holiday in 1996 and got a job. Years later, I’ve lived and worked all over this country. It’s a beautiful country, I fell in love with it, and it’s an absolute honour to become a citizen of this country because it’s my home.”

“People from so many different countries choosing to move here is a sign of what a good place Selwyn is to live and a boost for the district,” council community services group manager Denise Kidd said.

Ear Health Canterbury Ltd Established in 1999 as part of an expanding national company, Ear Health Canterbury is a client focussed, community-based nursing service providing safe, accessible and affordable ear care to people of all ages.

The experienced registered nurses at Ear Health have specialised training in microscopic examination of the outer canal and middle ear and use micro-suction for the removal of any canal debris, which may be causing discomfort and reduced hearing. It is a much less invasive technique than the previously accepted method of syringing ears with warm water.

Baker Bex Savage has been busy creating cookies and a Dunsandel Store gingerbread house along with Christmas fruit tarts as a way to bring extra cheer to the community this holiday season.

“I made the gingerbread house to inspire people to make one with their family at home as a fun tradition to get into,” says Bex. “It is nice and bright, and it just makes you happy. They are slightly challenging, but you can decorate them however you like. Then I decided to make reindeer and Christmas tree cookies, and the Christmas mince tarts to give people

other ideas. I thought if I can bake them — so can others. The cookies are great for children to make as well. It is nice for families to come together and decorate their creations. It is a lot of fun and quite therapeutic. They also make good gifts to give to friends and family.

“This year has been really good for us here in Dunsandel with lots of new faces joining the community and repeat customers travelling through. The cafe is shut on Christmas and Boxing Day, and then we will be open right through so people travelling past can stop for a break and grab a coffee. It is a really busy road with people heading south or north, and we hope everyone stays safe on their travels.

“We wish all of our customers a good Christmas, and we look forward to meeting new faces over the holiday period.” ¢

The girls will be keeping busy over the holidays as they enter two of their team items in the Showcase National Dance Championships. Showcase is holding a national finals event in Christchurch for the first time.

“Throughout the year, our girls have been attending competitions where they can perform their routines onstage in front of a judge and other fellow competitors. They have attended two in Christchurch and team travelled to Blenheim in October to dance at the new ASB theatre.

“During term three, the dancers sat their annual examinations in jazz, hiphop and acrobatics. They are eagerly awaiting their examination results, which will be presented to them this Friday.” ¢

“The girls were a part of the annual end of year show held at the Charles Luney Auditorium at St Margaret’s College recently. The show had a fabulous audience turnout, which saw 460 family and friends come along to support the dancers,” says TM Dance World Studios director, Tara McKeown.

“The junior team performed up to eight items in different genres showcasing their skills in jazz, ballet, tap, hip-hop and lyrical dance. We specialise in offering dance programmes to students from three years old to advanced levels.

The studio is part of many national and international dance organisations that allow us to teach fun and creative dance syllabus throughout the year including ballet, tap, contemporary and acrobatic arts. We have a team of talented teachers who are enthusiastic

Road closures saw 1,000 tourists stranded on the West Coast. Here in Selwyn, traffic disruptions meant long traffic queues and waiting times for travellers.

The prime minister announced an initial fund of $100,000 to help communities affected by the flooding.

The long-term forecast for Canterbury shows mainly cloudy weather with temperatures hovering around the low 20s.

The only further rain forecast for Canterbury is on Monday, December 16 — with a predicted 1.1mm fall. The weather is expected to be fine with sunny intervals for Christmas. ¢ 2

“High pressure influence will bring a more settled and brighter look across the South Island this week,” said Christchurch weather analyst Russel Voice.

However, he cautioned that more rain was still possible in the high country.

“A couple of systems take aim later in the week, bringing more rain to the main divide, with more significant rain possible on Friday and Sunday.

It has been a tumultuous week for weather in the South Island. Severe flooding at the weekend closed part of State Highway 1 and 72 and Rangitata, north of Timaru, while slips across on the West Coast blocked State Highway 6.

Cantabrians are being encouraged to protect themselves against Legionnaires’ disease this planting season by taking care with potting mix and compost.

As the days get longer and warmer, people are more inclined to head outside and get stuck into their gardens, and with this comes the increased risk of catching Legionnaires’.

Last year 48 hospitalisations from Legionnaires’ were recorded in Canterbury, and with 12 cases of the disease have been confirmed in the region since June this year.

Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey says Legionnaires’ disease is a form of pneumonia.

“It is caused by the Legionella bacteria that live in moist organic material, and people can catch the disease by inhaling airborne droplets or particles containing the bacteria.

“Gardeners are at particularly high risk as the bacteria thrive in bags of potting mix and compost. In Canterbury, there is typically a spike in cases in early November that can be attributed to the increased gardening activity over Labour weekend, and people need to take the necessary steps to avoid catching the disease.

“There are five simple actions gardeners should take to avoid getting Legionnaires’.

1. Open potting mix or compost

carefully — use scissors instead of ripping the bag.

2. Wear a well-fitting disposable face mask and gloves, and remember not to touch your mask when gardening.

3. Reduce dust by dampening down potting mix or compost with a sprinkle of water.

4. Work with potting mix or compost in a well-ventilated outdoor area.

5. Thoroughly wash your hands after handling potting mix or compost.

“Legionnaires’ is a very serious illness and following these simple steps can be lifesaving.”

The illness may be mild but is sometimes fatal. It is more common in older people, particularly if they smoke, have poor immunity or a chronic illness, however healthy young people have died from legionella pneumonia.

Symptoms can include dr y coughing, high fever, chills, shortness of breath, muscle aches, headaches and diarrhoea.

If you have these symptoms, you should contact your general practice team right away, and let them know you have been handling potting mix or compost. ¢

The annual Christchurch School of Gymnastics Christmas Competition saw the West Melton Gymnastics Club team members come away with several top placings.

“Our students have had a very successful year competitively and have placed in the top six of all the competitions we have entered,” says head coach Pam Higgins.

“The CSGC had 480 competitors from across the region and beyond. It was a tough competition with the various age groups. Rachael and Andrew Fearn have taken ownership of Ako Rolleston Preschool with plans to expand the experiences children attending the centre can engage in.

“We are excited about our new adventure and are remaining open during the Christmas period this year.

It will give families the opportunity to keep their children busy over the summer break,” says Rachael.

“I have 16 years’ experience in the early childhood sector and have completed bicultural practice, leadership and curriculum management. Andrew is my support and is very hands-on. He will be a familiar face to our families and children. Our team use Te Reo Maori, and I plan to engage them with other sound bicultural practices. We are very passionate about inclusiveness and acknowledge all cultural differences children bring into our centre. We will learn how to greet them in their native language if English is not their first language along with other basic words such as toilet and food.

Rolleston is a multicultural area, and we are passionate about nurturing every child’s wellbeing and giving them a positive experience.

“We want to give children stuck in a place no person wants to be a bit of a festive boost,” says Jamie.

“We were inspired by our friend Hamish who is currently biking from Christchurch to Bluff raising money for food hampers for families in need. He is also building a homeless shelter, and we have been helping him,” says Jamie.

The annual Cantastic Christmas Tree Food donation collection is taking place at libraries in the Selwyn District allowing members of the public to leave canned food items for local food banks.

“Libraries are an important community hub for everyone across Selwyn, and this is another opportunity for us to play our part in supporting those who need a hand, especially at Christmas,” said Selwyn Libraries manager, Arts, Culture and Lifelong Learning, Nicki Moen.

“This is a long-standing donation effort that the libraries have been involved in.

People have been very generous in the years it has been running — which we are really grateful for.”

Cans of food donated at the Darfield Library will go to the Two Rivers Community Trust Foodbank. Items at the other Selwyn Libraries will go to the Ellesmere Community Foodbank.

“The foodbank here in Darfield/ Malvern comes under the Two Rivers Community Trust, and we distribute to the surrounding areas,” says coordinator Rose Craven.

“A team of six volunteers have run the operation since September when it transferred over from the Malvern Hub. Food parcels are available all year and are generally given within three or four days of contact by someone in need. We

Car registration scam alert The NZ Transport Agency is warning people to be on the lookout for a scam vehicle licence (rego) email currently in circulation.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

While the email appears to be a standard vehicle licensing (rego) renewal reminder, with the NZ Transport Agency logo and links to the online transaction website, it is part of a sophisticated phishing exercise. The phishing email also comes from an email address with an nzta.co.nz suffix, rather than nzta. govt.nz.

If you have recently received an email asking you to renew your rego, check the email details carefully. If the email was genuinely sent from the NZTA, it would

include your specific vehicle details including your vehicle’s plate number, vehicle make and the expiry date of your current vehicle licence.

If the email does not include your specific vehicle details, do not complete the online renewal transaction webpage that the email takes you to.

If you have unintentionally clicked on a suspicious link and entered your credit card or banking details contact your bank immediately and have them stop any payments that may have been

made. You may need to request a new credit/debit card.

Report the email to your local police cyber-crime division and go to the netsafe.org.nz website and read their advisories for cyber safety. Do not delete the email, instead, put it in your junk mail folder in case the police need it for further examination.

Kiwi shears win New Zealand claimed a two to one triumph in a night of trans-Tasman shearing sports test matches in Australia recently.

The world champion woolhandling and blade shearing teams won their respective matches during the Australian national shearing and woolhandling championships in Dubbo, NSW, but the Kiwis were again shut out in the machine shearing match.

It was Australia’s fifth consecutive win in the annual home-and-away machine shearing matches, including two at New Zealand home-leg, the Golden Shears.

Veteran shearer Tony Dobbs and Allan Oldfield, of Geraldine, who together won a world title in France in July, maintained New Zealand’s unbeaten record in blade shearing tests against Australia by beating Johnathon Dalla and Ken French by a wide margin of almost 43 points.

World champion woolhandlers Sheree Alabaster, and Pagan Karauria, won the woolhandling test by just 2.54 points from Australian world championships team Rachael Hutchison and Mel Morris.

It took New Zealand to 33 wins in 43 tests since woolhandling was introduced to the series in 1998.

The council makes an effort to work with people to help get all dogs registered, Senior Animal Control Officer Steve Clarke said.

“People out here are pretty good — they love their dogs. People who’ve been in the district for a while know how we work, and we’re getting a good response from people moving here. We do have the power to seize a dog, but we haven’t had to do that for a few years. We work with people — we do emails, texts and phone calls. If someone’s really struggling to pay, we’ll discuss options with them. It’s education over enforcement.”

The comparatively low registration fee also helps, Clarke said. Along with making the system easy to register early and receive reminders of when their registrations are due also helps with the quick registration time.
