Affectionately known as Tarnspeil, this Kiwi version of a favourite Scottish winter sport is to be held on Saturday, August 10.

This unique event, which is open to all levels of participation and is said to be the highest altitude curling competition in Australasia, takes place on ‘the Tarn’, set 1800m above sea level in the top basin of the spectacular Mt Olympus ski resort.

“As the ice around the Alps continues to melt and thwart dedicated curlers from Greymouth to Staveley and beyond, the Mt Olympus event is gaining traction as one of the few

competitions still able to run,” Mt Olympus club captain, Simon Driscoll, says.

“This event has really gained momentum since we launched it as part of the Real New Zealand Festival in 2011.”

All visitors are encouraged to take part in the curling event which boasts an ice bar and barbecue lunch catered by an in-house chef.

Sheffield school receives funding boost u by Kent Caddick

The Selwyn District Council has apologised to some Darfield residents for failing to consult them on removing an historic footbridge but it won’t be putting the bridge back.

Sheffield Contributing School will receive $146,000 in extra funding this year through the Government’s Schools Property Guide Programme.

The programme is in place to provide schools with funding to increase their non-classroom space, such as libraries, administrative facilities and multi-purpose spaces, in line with roll growth.

Principal Simon Moriarty says they are delighted to receive the funding but have yet to decide how it will be spent.

“The school board will be getting together to discuss where this money will go.”

The council also failed to carry out an inspection of the 100-year-old bridge prior to its removal during intersection improvements at the corner of Telegraph Road and Cardale Street in Darfield.

Residents Donna Storer and Barbara Clinton had appealed to the Malvern Community Board to get council to put the footbridge back and at its June meeting the board agreed to ask council to restore the bridge.

However, at its July meeting, following a report from council’s assets manager Murray Washington, the board adopted a do-nothing stance over the bridge.

Board member Mary Ireland said as the Darfield Township Committee had decided not to have the bridge restored the community board could not go against that decision.

The township committee’s former chairman Paddy McKay resigned from the committee following his involvement in having the bridge removed.

Murray Washington told the community board he had written to Mrs Storer to apologise for the ‘angst’ the council had caused her and the

community for the ‘communication breakdown’ over the bridge’s removal.

Mr Washington said an inspection by civil engineers Bond Frew Ltd of the bridge after its removal showed the bridge had significant decay and the engineer’s report concluded that the bridge had reached the end of its useful life.

Bond Frew estimated it would cost around $10,000 to replace the bridge, which is currently stored at a property owned by Mr McKay. Mrs Storer says they are disappointed the bridge won’t be put back and were never seeking to have it replaced with a new one.

“What we would like to know is why council did not follow the proper process in having the bridge removed and why a report on the bridge’s condition wasn’t done prior to it being removed.”

The bridge was originally built to enable the Sisters of Mercy nuns from the St Johns Convent in Darfield cross a water race running alongside Telegraph Road to reach St Joseph’s Catholic Church, which was established in 1888. ¢

Technology is changing at an amazing pace these days and so is the Selwyn District Council.

There are a number of examples of how technology is changing our service. We recently purchased the ‘Kotui’ software package from the National Library and this has improved and enhanced the level of service provided by our libraries.

We already offer the popular free Wi-Fi and public access computer services and now the libraries can offer e-books.

Four hundred and ninety-nine e-books and eight e-readers have been purchased and these books can be downloaded onto your computer, i-pad or other reading devices (except a kindle) from your home thus further enhancing the library services. The e-books are free to read but there is a small charge to borrow the e-reader.

Council is also increasing its presence in social media. As well as our website we have a twitter account (@futureforselwyn) and facebook pages for the Aquatic Centre, a page for young people called Sensational Selwyn Youth and a page for visitors called Sensational Selwyn. Facebook also allows us to quickly update our followers on news, events, consultation and emergencies and allows you to give us your views on the issues.

Here in Selwyn we are very aware of the significance of water as debates around the access to, and use of, water have raged in our province for years.

As well as being essential to our health and wellbeing, water is the lifeblood of our economy, particularly our agricultural sector. This was dramatically illustrated by the effects of last summer’s severe drought in many areas of New Zealand.

It is essential that we balance the need for water to irrigate our pastures with the needs of our native flora and fauna. We all want our children and grandchildren to be able to enjoy swimming and fishing in our nation’s rivers and lakes.

In order to do this we must have a robust framework in place. This is why we have been working on the development of a new freshwater management structure and have consulted widely on this issue, receiving hundreds of submissions and holding more than 50 meetings throughout the country with councils, iwi, environment groups, businesses and the public.

Following this consultation, Cabinet has confirmed the first stage of the freshwater reform programme, which is critical to improving our freshwater quality and the way we manage our water resources.

A key focus of the reforms is on community involvement, specifically through a collaborative approach which will give local community groups a

greater say in planning what they want for their local waterways and how they should be managed, under the umbrella of a national framework based on the best available science.

It is important to realise that there is no ‘quick fix’. It has taken many decades to create the issues we face and improving our water management system will require solutions that start now and build over the long-term. ¢

Excitement is mounting at the Darfield Preschool and Nursery as its new building takes shape.

The community owned preschool, one of the few left in the country, is moving from its current location on Telegraph Road to its purpose built premises on Cardale Street.

“When we were looking at upgrading the current building we thought that if we were going to spend this money perhaps it would be better for us to look for our own site so we weren’t reliant on any outside influences,” Preschool centre manager Sally Whitwell says.

In light of that the preschool’s board of trustees made the decision to purchase a three acre block on Cardale Street in behind the Torlesse Bus Company yard.

“We as staff designed the building and gave the information to our architect who drew up the plans,” Whitwell says.

The build contract was awarded to Homes by Maxim and work began on the site in April.

“We are running a bit of a sweepstake on when it was going to be completed and I picked May so I’m out,” says Whitwell, who believes they will be able to move into the new site before Christmas.

“The new site is not about us getting bigger as we want to be able to retain the family and community feel we have with the preschool but it will enable us to be more in charge of our own destiny.” ¢

New toilets for Springfield a relief

p Draft plans for a new public toilet block in Springfield have been given the thumbs and it is hoped the new block will be open in time for the Christmas holidays. Graeme Wilson, Selwyn District Council’s property and facilities and team leader, says the plans have been approved by the toilet working group and will now go back to the architect who will draw up detailed construction plans and the contract will then go out for tender.

CDHB election nominations close soon Selwyn residents wanting to have their name put forward for the Canterbury District Health Board elections have until Friday, August 16 to do so.

The CDHB elections are for seven positions, elected on an ‘at large’ basis by enrolled residents of the Canterbury health board area, extending from Kaikoura to Ashburton, meaning that they represent the entire population.

The elections, carried out every three years, are done by postal vote, with voting closing at noon on Saturday, October 12, 2013.

Following the election, the Minister of Health Tony Ryall may appoint a further four members, making a total of 11 members.

Common muscle problems Blenheim trip for DHS jazz band The two most common chronic muscle problems are Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) and Fibromyalgia (FM).

Both FM and PMR are autoimmune diseases and result in muscle pain but that is about where the similarities stop.

PMR mostly affects those over 60 and common symptoms are stiffness and pain commonly around the neck and shoulders especially in the mornings. Around 20% of people with PMR also develop Temporal Arteritis. This is caused inflammation of the major arteries which pass through the temple causing vision problems and even blindness.

The major medical therapy is the steroid prednisone which blocks the production of inflammatory cytokines usually with a rapid reduction in symptoms. Many recover in a year or so but others have this for an extended period or find that it recurs after a period of remission. People on statin medicines need to be aware that these can exacerbate PMR symptoms which is why I invariably add CoQ10 to those with PMR who take statins.

Nutritional therapy complements the effects of prednisone by reducing immune system production of inflammatory chemicals. We add a wide range of antioxidant and antiinflammatory compounds to assist energy production and to lower inflammation. Serious fatigue is a feature of PMR and increases in energy is often the first benefit people feel from nutritional therapy.

FM is a lot more complex. These are often referred to as FM syndromes as they involve other problems especially Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. There are relatively few medical treatment options but the most common are tricyclic antidepressants to treat both pain and insomnia.

FM is more difficult to treat with nutritional therapy as it is not a simple inflammatory problem. It appears that muscle mitochondria are damaged by free radicals which impair muscle fibre function which reduces energy and causes pain (M. Cordero et al, 2010). I have found people get real benefits from intensive multi-antioxidant therapy including CoQ10, OPC, resveratrol and many others. I always add broad spectrum vitamin and minerals and often high dose MSM and magnesium before bed to help with muscle function. Give me a call if you need help. The 15 strong jazz band is made up mostly of junior school students. With the departure of many of the jazz band’s senior students at the end of last year the band is full of fresh new players according to Rachel Balchin, Head of Music at Darfield High School.

Pupils at Sheffield Contributing School had a treat last week with a visit from New Zealand Olympic rower Storm Uru. Uru and rowing partner Peter Taylor took out a bronze medal in the lightweight double sculls division at last year’s London Olympics.

He brought with him his Olympic medal and all the pupils got to hold it helping to inspire their own Olympic dreams.

The Xtreme Fitness playground system will be built by the Playground Centre in Wanganui and includes climbing walls, nets, bridges and bars designed for fitness and entertainment.

“We are really excited that the senior students will have a playground,” the school’s head boy Tait Spain says.

“I’m looking forward to having a go,” adds Ally Taylor, the school’s deputy head girl.

Helen Howden from the school’s Board of Trustees says they wanted to provide something for students from Years 5 to 8.

“We wanted something that would be physically challenging and motivating for them.”

Howden said that three-quarters of the total cost of $81,000 has been raised from a variety of charities and trusts as well as the school’s own fundraising efforts.

“We hope to have it installed by the end of the year.”

Howden says the playground will be open for the community to use out of school hours.

Gillman Wheelans Limited, developer of the Preston Downs subdivision in West Melton, will combine with the school later in the year to provide a community fun day to help raise funds for the playground. ¢

A strong desire to ensure the history of the Whitecliff’s rail line is remembered has spurred local residents to pay tribute to the line in different ways, including history books and a possible commemorative site.

Brian says he knew he wanted to have a church on the site and is hoping it will eventually be used for weddings.

The Cribbs have put in a new driveway off Gunn’s Road so that future users will have separate access from the homestead. A new amenities block is to be built nearby.

Built in 1911 out of native timber, the church still contains the altar,

confessional, church pews and organ. Bernard Duncan of the St Joseph’s Parish is very happy with the outcome.

Racecourse Hill history The land at Racecourse Hill was once part of a run of 40,000 acres owned by Alfred Creyke and John Watts-Russell.

The first house to be built on the site was later cut in half. One half was relocated just down the road and is now known as ‘The Oaks’.

The other half was moved to Bleak House Rd, but subsequently burnt down.

An area of about 4,500 acres

was sold to Harry Knight who commissioned Cecil Wood to design the present day homestead in 1912.

The home is 743 square metres with bricks cladding the ground floor and a wooden second story.

The hill itself has been a predominant feature of approximately 30 metres in an area of otherwise flat land. It is thought that the hill was formed as a result of early seismic activity.

West Melton trainer Cran Dalgety has finally got a monkey off his back when he recently took out the New Zealand Harness Racing Trainer’s Premiership title.

The monkey was threatening to turn into a bit of a gorilla for Cran after finishing second in the premiership for the last four seasons.

But that all changed at the Rangiora races on July 28 when Cran won two races to New Zealand’s leading trainer Mark Purdon’s one to clinch his first trainers’ premiership. He finished one

ahead of Purdon for the 2012–13 season, with a career best of 115 wins from 511 starters for $1,201,405 in stakes.

She puts her husband’s success down to him being a perfectionist.

“He leaves no stone unturned and is a great communicator when it comes to ensuring the owners are kept informed and I think the owners appreciate that.”

Cran’s first training win was in 1992 at Addington with Laud, who was driven

by Chrissie’s legendary grandfather, the late Derek Jones.

The wins have flowed regularly since with the Kentuckiana Lodge stable winning $1 million-plus and securing over 100 wins in each of the last three seasons.

He has concentrated on being the best he can as a trainer, and enlisted two champion young drivers, firstly Mark Jones, and latterly Dexter Dunn, primarily over the years, to do most of his stable driving.

Dunn was in the sulky when Cran’s 2-year-old debutante Locharburn secured the premiership title with a win at Rangiora.

Earlier at the meeting Cran picked up his first win of the day with Princess Sophia, who is raced by mother-in-law Jenny Butt and was driven by brother-inlaw Anthony Butt.

Cran says his success has been made possible with the support of great owners, like Jim and Susan Wakefield, Graham and Lyn Beirne, John and Margaret Smith, Trevor Beaton and Ross Stanbury, who have essentially had a horse with him from the start of his training career.

He also paid tribute to his hardworking staff at Kentuckiana Lodge, Kevin Turnbull, Murray Howard, David Moore, Bill Roberts, Matt Cross, Jack Trainor, Laura McKay and weekend worker David Whittle, for making this season’s success possible. ¢

Before you invite tenders from builders, you may want to get some costings for the job to get an idea whether you can afford to go ahead.

You can use a quantity surveyor to get an accurate costing before you put the job out to tender. Then when the tenders come in you have a good basis to evaluate them.

A quantity surveyor (QS) is a person trained in construction methods and costs. They work closely with you and the architect/designer, engineer and builder to itemise the quantities of materials and labour needed to build or renovate a house, using the design drawings.

The quantity surveyor’s estimate can give you a reasonable idea of the costs and it can be used by the builders when
