Linda estimates that she’s had around 60 to 70 students live with her, from countries such as Japan, Korea, Thailand, China, Germany, Austria and Brazil.

She first began hosting Darfield High School international students after a friend suggested it.

Linda started by having two Japanese boys stay with her short term and said she became hooked at that point.

Linda has her own children, four daughters and a son, and said hosting had been a positive experience for her family.

She said it helped her family learn about other cultures and gave them a reason to travel more in New Zealand as they highlighted what the country has to offer.

As part of a nationwide revamp Plunket has appointed a Community Support Co-ordinator who will cover an area west of Christchurch, which includes Selwyn, to provide a link between the organisations’ paid and volunteer workers.

Phillipa Simmons is based at Rolleston and will provide support to areas such as Kirwee, Dunsandel, Hororata and Darfield.

“Plunket is an amazing resource and I want to make sure it continues. I’d like to hear from people about what they think is needed from Plunket in these communities,” Ms Simmons said.

One of the first tasks Ms Simmons hopes to do is set up a Plunket volunteer group in Rolleston.

“There hasn’t been a group running in Rolleston for a few years. It’s such a growing community,” she said.

Ms Simmons said the new Rolleston group will decide what goals it wants to achieve, how it will fundraise and what it will spend its funds on.

“It’s no use reinventing the wheel in Rolleston. It’s about finding the gaps.

What is needed?”

She has already met with a group of local mums to get ideas and hopes a more formal group will get underway within the month.

“It’s important we work together with other groups, such as Playcentre. We

want to work in conjunction with these groups and put new people in touch with them.”

Plunket Community Support provides a number of services including parenting education, car seat advice, installation and hire, playgroups, toy library and provides general support for families and communities.

Ms Simmons said Plunket is always looking for new people willing to volunteer. Those wanting to become involved in Plunket or have ideas about what the community needs can email phillipa.simmons@plunket.org.nz for more details. ¢

Ready to race again The countdown to New Zealand Cup and Show Week spring festival has begun, with tickets now on sale.

The festival and highlight of New Zealand’s racing calendar kicks off on November 8 this year.

Events development manager at the Christchurch City Council, Richard Attwood, said it pays to get in early for the racing carnivals and social events.

“Now is the time to get friends together and start planning your week. Tickets for some of the events are cheaper the sooner you buy, so it really does pay to be an early bird,” he said.

“This year’s festival is all about celebrating the thrill of a win, enjoying a day out with friends, experiencing rural life at the show, dressing to the nines, tasting our region’s excellent food and wine, and simply coming together as a community to have some fun.”

The New Zealand 2000 Guineas Day at Riccarton Park Racecourse marks the official start of Cup and Show Week, while the newest event in this year’s line-up is the Professional Bull Riders New Zealand Cup, with 22 elite bull riders battling each other and their beasts.

Also making its debut this year is Hat and Hair Art, an event which celebrates the creative brilliance of New Zealand’s leading hat and hair artists.

All up, between November 8 and 15, Christchurch will play host to nine spectacular events, including the Canterbury A&P Show, the muchanticipated New Zealand Trotting Cup Day at Addington Raceway, and the NZ Cup and Bloodstock 1000 Guineas Day at Riccarton Park Racecourse. The month of August marks the beginning of New Zealand’s programme for the centennial commemorations of World War I. The centenary is an opportunity to remember the service and sacrifices of New Zealanders during that terrible period. It is also a time to reflect on the impact of the conflict on our national identity and our values today.

In Wellington, the official commemorative programme commenced with a public ceremony at Parliament on Monday to mark the centenary of the declaration of the First World War in August 1914.

Here in Selwyn, the members of the Waddington/Sheffield Township Committee commemorated the occasion by planting the first oak in the Waddington/Sheffield Avenue of Remembrance.

I would like to congratulate the committee for their work on this notable project to plant an avenue of trees grown from acorns taken from the ‘Gallipoli

The second tree will be planted next April to mark the landing on Gallipoli — then, on Armistice Day 2018, one tree will be planted in memory of each of the 20 local servicemen killed during the war.

I am sure that this avenue of trees will become a place of beauty and solemn reflection and will serve to remind future generations of the sacrifice of those local soldiers lost during World War I. World War I touched all New Zealanders, male and female, both those who went to fight and those who stayed behind. That is why it is appropriate that events created by our local communities, often telling personal connections and stories, are at the heart of the WW100 programme.

Linda said the key to having students in your home is to treat them like you would want your own child to be treated if they were living with a host family overseas.

DHS homestay co-ordinator Sarah Rawson said homestay students stay anywhere from 10 days to five years and range in age from 12 to 19 years of age.

“People host students for a number of reasons. Some love learning about other cultures and like looking after people. Some want their own children to learn about the world.”

Sarah said while numbers of students from overseas dropped following the Canterbury earthquakes, the number was starting to grow again.

Timeframe wanted Dear Editor, I read with interest the comments from the Selwyn District Council re their addressing the need for a pedestrian crossing on Rolleston Drive in today’s issue of The Record.

In particular, it would be appreciated if Mr Mazey could elaborate on his comment that ‘improvements to the crossings on Rolleston Drive are also planned for’, by perhaps giving a

meaningful timeframe as to when we will see something happen.

It is sad that this appears to be seen as a low priority, despite an apparent large amount of support from the community for something to be done.

I truly hope that we don’t see a death or serious injury suffered whilst we wait for the said works to be implemented.

Intelligent goats Dear Editor, In response to the article ‘Farming goats is no simple task’ (The Record 30.07.14), while the author is correct that goats are fussy and need specific care, she fails to point out just how social these intelligent animals are and that they also need access to clean fresh water.

They crave company and should not be kept alone. The sight of a bored and lonely goat chained on a roadside verge Read the newspaper online

is a sad one indeed. It is in fact a cruel practice and anyone not caring properly for the goat or not providing adequate feed or water can find they are breaching the Animal Welfare Act. Goats do not belong on roadsides, vulnerable and without fresh browse.

They should be in paddocks and cared for as the fun, intelligent animals they are.

Day clubs proving popular

Day Clubs around Selwyn are appealing to a growing number of the district’s retired residents.

When Clearview Primary School student Bella Lammers decided to base her inquiry study on her passion for cooking she had no idea she would end up meeting her idol Jo Seagar.

Earlier in the term 12-year-old Bella had written to the wellknown New Zealand cook and author asking her questions which Jo responded to. At the end of the term Bella visited Seagars Café in Oxford and was fortunate enough to meet Jo in person.

“I was happy to meet Jo. She gave me a big hug,” Bella said.

Bella was able to chat with Jo about her favourite topic, food.

“Jo thanked me for visiting her and her cafe. I told her that we made her famous p Celebrity cook Jo Seagar shares some food tips with Clearview Primary School’s Bella Lammars cookies but had to alter the recipe as I am gluten free.”

The Selwyn District Council supports Day Clubs in Darfield, Leeston, Lincoln and Rolleston by providing venues, assisting with volunteer training and on-site support. Council’s community development officer Lisa Larkin said council is happy to support the clubs.

“They help older residents find a place to meet people of their own age and interests. They are also a nice place for people to visit in cold weather to enjoy a hearty meal.”

One of the clubs meets at the Rolleston Community Centre on the fourth Thursday of each month, with more than 20 senior citizens getting together for a day of activities, board

games, discussions, music and movement classes as well as a hot cooked lunch.

At 84 years old, Thelma Flint is one of the Rolleston Day Club’s eldest members. She has been attending sessions since they first started over five years ago.

“I enjoy coming to Day Club regularly and it has become part of my routine now,” Mrs Flint said.

“Not only is it a lovely place to share stories and play board games or cards, we join in on topical discussions and listen to guest speakers too.”

Jamesa Hampton will team up and mentor budding competitors over the weekend to help prepare the participants for the real thing.

“We’ll be looking at all aspects of a competition day, from warmingup, to checking out snow conditions and making the best line selection,” Hunt said.

“Kids need to have the basic skills before going in a comp and we’re here to help them learn those skills.”

Day one will be spent introducing par ticipants to the mountain environment, understanding the judging criteria and competition format, as well as learning good strategies to help them perform well in a competition scenario.

“We’ll be taking video footage during the day so we can look back and analyse it that same night,” Hunt said.

“Watching yourself on video is a great way to see things from a judge’s point-of-view and critique your style.” On

Sunday the camp finishes with another coaching session in the morning followed by a Big Mountain Competition in the afternoon where participants can demonstrate what they’ve learnt over the weekend.

There was an excited buzz around Darfield High School on Friday afternoon as senior students and staff took on the task of transforming the school hall

into the ancient world of Olympus. Inside the hall replica white marble columns adorned with green climbing vines held up a faux ceiling of white silk.

Attendees entered the formal through a decorated archway, dressed in flowing gowns and pressed suits for the social calendar highlight of the year. ¢

Polly lives with her husband and two children on a 10-acre lifestyle block near Darfield. As would be expected there is a mandatory paddock of sheep. The children help to raise pet lambs each spring and they are

encouraged to have a go at shearing the sheep and entering the wool at local A&P shows.

“I like sheep. They make great pets and have a really calming influence.

It’s amazing what you can do with their wool.” Polly does most of her work from home which fits in well with being a mum. Her products are sold throughout New Zealand and from her website and

“People love them. People want to touch the caskets in a way they didn’t the traditional ones.”

Polly is also having pet caskets made for people who want to give their pet a comfortable send off.

A passionate promoter of the use of wool, Polly is encouraged by the Campaign for Wool global initiative whose patron and ardent wool advocate is HRH the Prince of Wales.

“In New Zealand dairy cow numbers are growing and it would be sad to see a generation of sheep farming lost. At the moment wool is a niche market.

There isn’t a big enough global demand.

Farming is cyclical. Sheep are a lot lighter on the land. I think sheep will have their day again.” ¢

Rumen scientist Dr Jim Gibbs is so impressed by the potential of the fodder beet that he refers to the crop as a game changer.

The fodder beet has been known to farmers for thousands of years but was viewed with suspicion from medieval times until very recently.

Dr Gibbs said New Zealand farmers were the ones to discover its usefulness as a winter feed because many of them mistook them for swedes. The Lincoln University professor has spent time on 70 farms around the country in an effort to get a better idea of beef finishing.

He said New Zealand only has quality grass for about three to four months out of the year and is still far behind

In the United States beef cows go to market at around 14 to 16 months old.

In Europe its around 12–15 months.

Gibbs said New Zealand sends its cows to market at around 26–36 months and he referred to these cows as ‘pensioners’.

“Right now you can’t fit the energy into them at a price that makes them pay,” he said.

In order for the country to have a competitive advantage he said animals need to be fattened with a cost effective winter feed.

“The use of fodder as a primary feed for cattle grazed behind a wire is a Kiwi invention. It took NZ farmers less than 20 years to do what the Europeans had not worked out in 500 years — it’s a genuine Kiwi innovation,” he said.

“The fodder beet tide surge is entirely Kiwi. It is the fastest growing forage in the country, not because it has had the most research, but because the farmers can see the value in the crop.

They are driving the use of it, discovering new applications, and inventing new equipment for it.”

He cautioned that cows must be transitioned onto fodder beets gradually and perfectly.

Introducing too much at once can create a condition known as rumen acidosis which can be fatal to the animal.

“The fodder beet is like a sugar bomb which is why transition is so important,” he said.

According to Dr Gibbs, adult stock start at 1–2kg of dry matter fodder beet per day with 6–8kg supplements of either hay, straw or silage.

The fodder beet increases by 1kg of dry matter every second day for 14 days while the supplement falls to 4kg in week two and then 2–3kg from 14–21 days forward.

From day 14–21 the diet is kept stable with no changes. After, the amount of fodder beet is increased until the cattle aren’t eating anymore. The supplement remains at 2–3kg.

For younger cattle weighing between 220–300kg, the transition rate is half a kilogram of fodder beet on day one plus 4kg of supplement followed by half a kilogram increase every second day.

The supplement falls to 1–2kg by day 14 and thereafter.

Once cattle are transitioned the advantages are numerous.

Dr Gibbs said the beet grows everywhere and is cheap to produce. It has a 20 to 30 tonne yield per hectare, cost about 4 to 10 cents per kilogramme of dry matter, is sown in spring and can be fed to cattle from March to December.

Other advantages are low supplement inputs — the cows can eat as much as they like and monster crop production is possible in New Zealand soils.

In future, Dr Gibbs plans to start a Fodder Beet Club where growers and farmers can share information online. ¢

Wool levy proposed to aid growth

Rural Women New Zealand is running a competition to capture stories of farming life in New Zealand.

To raise interest in the upcoming wool levy vote the Wool Levy Group has launched a website to inform sheep farmers about the issue.

Stories of 300 words or less, photos and short films about farming can be entered in the competition and could be used in the future to promote the New Zealand primary industry brand and its rural values.

“We are running the competition in conjunction with the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) to tell the stories behind the primary products we grow on our farms,” Rural Women national president Wendy McGowan said.

The Wool Levy Group, which is made up of sheep industry professionals including farmers, was founded in 2012 to study grower investment in the industry.

In 2013, the group decided there was a strong case for re-introducing a wool levy in order to reinvigorate the industry and restore a focus on wool production and profitability.

The proposed levy is for between two and five cents per kilogram of greasy and slipe wool.

According to the group’s website the levy would raise around $4.6 million on an estimated 154,000 tonnes of wool and would fund activities which would support and complement work being done by existing organisations.

Specific areas to be improved through the funding would be communication, education and innovation.

It’s August and things are starting to get exciting again in the garden.

After a rather soggy Selwyn winter, with a few good frosts to kill off the bugs and seal in the nutrients, the garden is now ready to spring into life once more. Watch out for weeds that might try to take over dormant beds which are waiting for spring planting.

Prepare your soil by adding some wellrotted manure or compost and give the whole thing a good turn over, spreading around the goodness and freeing up the soil for good drainage.

Don’t forget to put in some new strawberry plants. They love a good chilly winter morning, which helps to get their flower buds going.

Prune If you haven’t pruned your plants yet, make sure you do so now to promote new growth. Remove any diseased parts and also any dead bits. Wait until summer to prune peach and plum trees.

Planting perennial peonies u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

This week I picked up three peony tubers from a West Melton grower to plant in my garden. A traditional rose grower I know nothing about peonies except they look lovely.

p The peony is a native of Asia, Southern Europe and Western North America

A helpful pamphlet from the supplier and some digging around on the internet and I am now good to get going.

Peonies are perennials, meaning they live on year after year, as opposed to annuals which only live for one season.

In fact peonies are known for their longevity of life, some living for as long as 100 years.

If you’re planting peonies from tubers the rule is they should have at least three eyes (little red eyes like those found on sprouting potatoes) as this will result in quicker growth and blooming.

Tubers should be planted with the eyes

facing upwards and the roots spread out. Peonies thrive best when planted in soil with good drainage. If your soil is dense with clay it’s good to add a bit of compost to the ground and mix it in with a shovel. Don’t plant your peonies too deep, only about two to three centimetres as the roots love a good chilly frost in the winter and this encourages their blooms.

Plant in an area with at least six hours of sunlight a day, if not more, as this is said to encourage blooms also. Peonies don’t like being moved and divided and it may take one to

three years to first bloom after planting a tuber. Once established they don’t require a lot of maintenance and seldom need watering. Sometimes rotting of the roots is a problem.

The risk of this can be minimised by not adding coverings such as bark or mulch in deep layers at the base of the plant.

Peonies bloom in late spring and early summer and often have a lovely fragrance.

To capture the flowering peony all year around try air drying some blooms to display. Choose flowers that have just bloomed. In mid-morning cut the stems six to eight inches long and tie in bundles of no more than two or three to allow for adequate airing. Hang upside down in a cool dark room for at least a week. Once stiff arrange in a vase and enjoy. ¢

Battalion of World War Two. At the time, the entire population of New Zealand was just over 1 million.

The human cost, especially for a farming region such as Selwyn, was staggering. With so many men committed to warfare, it was left to those who stayed behind to maintain the land and feed the demands of the war effort.

In many ways, New Zealand’s stand with Britain in what became known as the Great War was a terrible tragedy. But from out of this grim chapter in world history came a new sense of self, and self-assurance, which separated us forever from our colonial ‘mother country’, and forged an integral part of the national identity we recognise today.

A new sense of both New Zealand and Australia as nations in their own right, on an equal footing with Britain, emerged from the hell of the trenches.

Enlistment numbers were high here in Selwyn and the wider Canterbur y region, as husbands, fathers, brothers and sons signed up for what many thought would be a great adventure, and a chance to prove their braver y. Overall, 120,000 men enlisted, including the 2200 soldiers of the Maori Pioneer Battalion, forerunners of the famed 28th Maori

This week marks the 100th anniversary of the declaration of World War One in 1914, a proclamation made in England on the 4th of August.

By the time the armistice was signed in 1918 New Zealand would have paid a grim toll. Standing shoulder to shoulder with Great Britain in a confrontation with the Ottoman Turks, Germany and Austria-Hungar y, one in five Kiwi men would enlist and serve, with over 18,500 giving their lives in combat. More than 40,000 were seriously wounded or debilitated.

But in this crucible of war a new national identity emerged for the men of ANZAC — the army corps made up of New Zealand and Australian soldiers.

They headed from the small country towns around Selwyn to sign up and the attraction for many of the country lads, with their ability to ride horses, was to join the Canterbury Mounted Rifles Regiment.

The regiment was assigned to the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade, and formed part of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force serving alongside two other mounted regiments — the Auckland Mounted Rifles and the Wellington Mounted Rifles.

Selwyn had a history of soldiers on horseback with the Malvern Mounted Rifles, Amuri Mounted Rifles and the Ellesmere Mounted Rifles being formed around the time of the Boer War (1899-1902).

The three came together to form the 1st Mounted Rifles (Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry) and along with the 8th (South Canterbury) Mounted Rifles and the 10th (Nelson) Mounted Rifles became the Canterbury Mounted Rifles Regiment (CMR) under the command of LieutenantColonel John Findlay. The CMR

was established with 26 officers, 523 other ranks and 600 horses.

On September 23, 1914 the regiment left their camp for Lyttelton and embarked on the transport ships HMNZT Tahiti and HMNZT Athenic. Leaving the same day, they arrived at Wellington the next afternoon and disembarked.

On October 14 they boarded the transports again and set sail. With a short stop at Hobart reached Colombo on November 15.

Two days later it sailed into the Red Sea, and the Suez Canal. Docking at Port Said on December 2 and Alexandria the next day, the regiment disembarked on December 4 and boarded a train for their camp in the Cairo suburb of Zeitoun where they started a training programme.

Their first involvement came in the Gallipoli Campaign between May and December 1915, during which they participated in the largest battle of that theatre at Chunuk Bair and the fighting for Hill 60. When it was sent to

Gallipoli the CMR left its horses behind in Egypt and the men fought in the same manner as their counterparts in the New Zealand infantry battalions.

Evacuated to Egypt, they then took part in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign from 1916 to 1918.

The early battles they were involved in included those at Romani, Gaza and Beersheba.

Later in the war they were part of the force which occupied the Jordan Valley.

In Sinai and Palestine the mounted rifles were valued for their ability to patrol and carry out reconnaissance over a much larger area than could be covered on foot.

Their final wartime operation was in connection with the capture of the Turkish Fourth Army.

During the four years of war the regiment lost 334 men (dead from all causes), while another 720 were wounded or debilitated.

The regiment was disbanded in June 1919.
