Now donning the white helmet of Chief Fire Officer (CFO) of the Sheffield brigade, some would say after 43 years as a volunteer firefighter Nev is finally wearing the right colours.

“I’ve done a bit of everything. I started off as a firefighter, I’ve been treasurer, secretary and station officer,” Nev said. With the Sheffield brigade being an auxiliary of Darfield until just

a lot of fun to be had with numerous competitions and events.

Nowadays he says things are a lot more serious, with a high standard of training and the bureaucratic requirements of record keeping. But the premise of why people join the fire service remains.

four years ago, there was no role for a CFO at Sheffield. This all changed two weeks ago when Nev, the Senior Station Officer, was given the official role of the first fire chief of the Sheffield brigade.

“I’ve got the white hat to go with it, but I’m just one of the guys. I don’t want anything to change,” Nev said.

Nev remembers the early days of being a firefighter as exciting. There was

Cell phone coverage getting close u by Kent Caddick

Improved cell phone coverage in West Melton is weeks away.

Work has finished on erecting a 25m cell phone tower in Halkett Road and Vodafone is completing testing of the tower before it becomes live, boosting coverage to the West Melton township toward the end of September.

Vodafone says it will also give 1167 addresses in the area access to wireless rural Broadband.

The tower needs to comply with the Government’s Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI) under which Vodafone agreed to construct the tower over three years ago and concerns remain the smaller than planned tower may not achieve this.

Vodafone has twice reduced the height of the tower to try to satisfy some local residents who complained about the siting of the tower. A small group of residents also lodged an appeal in the Environment Court appealing a Selwyn District Council resource consent decision to allow the construction of a 32m tower in 2013.

A court hearing had been due to be held later this year but Vodafone opted to put that on hold in the hope a 25m tower will do the job.

A 25m tower does not need resource consent.

Vodafone external communications manager Michelle Baguley said they have reserved the right to return to the original resource consent application for the 32m tower should the 25m tower not be able to fulfil the requirements of the RBI. ¢

p DHS Jazz Band performed recently at the CPIT Jazz Quest gaining a bronze award

A bronze award in both the CPIT Jazz Quest held last month and the Southern Jam in Blenheim last week confirmed the bands’ hard work is paying off, the school’s Head of Music Rachel Balchin said.

“It’s great for them to get the bronze.

The majority of the students are only Year 8-10. They’ve done very well for their experience level.”

Southern Jam held last week saw the students travel to Blenheim where they stayed for four nights.

As well as competing, the band performed in gigs at clubs around Blenheim and at a gala concert, and participated in jazz workshops.

“It gives them confidence and helps them to understand jazz,” Ms Balchin said.

“I like taking students to an environment where they grow musically and as a team. These experiences see them move forward with music and enjoy music. ¢ DARFIELD

Nev has lived most of his life in Sheffield and has taken on various roles including helping out his father who part-owned the Sheffield garage, working at the now defunct post office and toll exchange located in the building which now houses the Sheffield Pie shop, and selling cars to locals, including his favourite make Chrysler.

These days Nev can be found early in the morning delivering the rural mail to the Sheffield, Springfield and outlying areas, a role various family members have had over the years.

Nev is grateful volunteer numbers at the Sheffield brigade remain strong. With 17 members Nev hopes the brigade will continue to serve the community well in the future.

“You want to leave it in a strong position. You want people coming through who are able to take it over.” ¢

Farm environment template released Environment Canterbury has approved a farm environment plan template to help address water quality issues in Selwyn.

The template is an adaptation of the Irrigation New Zealand template and was developed for use in the Whakaora Te Waihora programme area.

Whakaora Te Waihora is a joint cultural and ecological restoration programme led by Ngai Tahu and Environment Canterbury and involving the Selwyn District Council.

Environment Canterbury chief Executive Bill Bayfield said the template met all the requirements of Schedule 7 of the proposed Land and Water Regional Plan (LWRP).

“Effective farm environment planning

and delivery is going to be crucial for Te Waihora / Lake Ellesmere,” Mr Bayfield said.

Variation 1 of the LWRP, which will amend the Selwyn-Waihora section specifically to address the serious water quality issues in the catchment, is currently before hearing commissioners.

“Farmers have a central role to play in addressing these issues,” Mr Bayfield said.

“They will need to operate beyond good management practice to do this and farm environment plans are an important starting point. ¢

When Ian Sandford became chairperson of the West Melton 150th celebrations committee he took literally the challenge to recreate the bygone era of when the town was first settled, if only on a somewhat smaller scale.

Mr Sandford, a miniature and model enthusiast, is building a scale replica of Tricketts’ cottage, thought to be the first house to be built on a residential section in colonial West Melton.

“I was helping with the 150th celebrations when I came across an old photo of the cottage. Having been a model maker most of my life I thought it would be a neat little model to have at the celebrations,” Mr Sandford said.

He began by resurrecting his old secondary school technical drawing skills and went about planning his design on paper.

Post free applicants wanted Time is running out for Selwyn groups to apply for New Zealand Post’s community postage-free envelopes.

Budding student problem solvers sought Lincoln University has launched a new nationwide programme designed to engage secondary school students with some of the most pressing issues facing the planet today.

New Zealand Post said it has received a steady stream of applications from the central South Island for the postage-included envelopes it gives to community groups through Community Post.

Community Post supports nonprofit organisations by assisting them with mail services to carry out projects which benefit communities in their region.

NZ Post community investment manager Nicola Airey said 1.5 million postage included envelopes are being made available across New Zealand again this year.

“The aim is to help community groups in the central South Island

with the hugely important work they do in communities — in areas such as literacy and education, health and welfare, and collaborative projects with other charities and businesses.

“So far we’ve had just over 90 local organisations apply, which is brilliant, and we encourage more groups to get their applications in before the end of August.”

Last year, Community Post provided postage-included envelopes and other related services to more than 2220 groups nationwide.

Selwyn organisations are invited to apply at www.nzpost.co.nz/ communitypost before Sunday, August 31. ¢

The 2014 Chill Junior Big Mountain Championship series kicked off at the Craigieburn Valley ski area recently.

Event director Stu Waddel said after recent snow storms Craigieburn had good snow cover and some powder, making for awesome conditions for the competition with 25 talented skiers from Canterbury and the Southern Lakes taking to the mountain.

“Craigieburn is one of a handful of small ski areas which offer superb terrain and on mountain accommodation. Big mountain skiing is part of the experience here and presented the young competitors with new and challenging features. “Topped off with great weather, the competition

was enjoyed by all,” Mr Waddell said.

Taane Bayce-Horseley from Wanaka took out the first place in the 10-and-under male division with Jasper Bloomfield the 12-and-under male event.

Another Wanaka skier, Manu Barnard scored gold in the 14-and-under male category.

The 14-and-under female division was won by reigning champ Phoebe Young with Reanna Shepherd taking out second place followed by Megan Blackley. In the 16-and-under division Matthew Sweet made it three from three for Wanaka in the boys’ events. ¢

Free art weekend

The Malvern Community Arts Council is putting on a free weekend of art activities where Selwyn residents can come and ‘have a go’.

The weekend, which is being supported by the Canterbury Community Trust, will be held at the Darfield Recreation Centre on the weekend of September 13 and 14, running from 11am to 3pm both days.

A prerequisite of running a guesthouse is enjoying spending time with people and being comfortable sharing your home with strangers.

“We don’t have children and our family is overseas so our guests are our family.

A highlight of a business such as ours is meeting people and generally just doing what we like and where we like is the greatest reward and making people happy by giving them a good time, good food and good service.”

Robert said the secret to their success was quality. “Our personal service is a key factor in our success. Our natural

He said winning the Sensational Selwyn tourism award meant a lot to the couple who have called Selwyn home for the past nine years.

“It has been neat to be acknowledged for what we do here. It is a big honour and we are thankful to the people of Selwyn.”

Robert said Selwyn is a great place to do business as people are welltravelled and the district is located in close proximity to an international airport which is important for attracting overseas visitors.

While visitor numbers from overseas reduced rapidly after the 2010 earthquake Robert said numbers are coming back up and if things keep going as they are they will be even better than before 2010.

“The city of Christchurch is not too far away and very important for our overseas visitors is that the airport is only one hour distance.”

Life is not all about business, though Robert admitted running the guesthouse takes up a fair amount of the couple’s time. They still find a little time for relaxation.

“We both like reading books on all subjects. Every year I do a paper at Massey University.

“Our family are all in Switzerland and England which is one reason for a yearly visit back in Europe.

“Travel and food and of course wine are three more interests we like to pursue. We also like gardening and grow our own vegetables for the guesthouse over the summer.” ¢

There is a certain mystic appeal to the spice known as saffron which leaves some people glowing with delight upon hearing its name, while others turn cold wondering what all the fuss is about.

Saffron is a spice derived from the saffron crocus flower. Each crocus grows up to four flowers and each flower has three stigmas which are removed and dried to be used in cuisine, as a colouring agent and as a medicine.

Saffron is the world’s most costly spice by weight and its history of use by humans dates back over 3,500 years ago.

Jules Smith from www.lifestyleblock. co.nz says that growing saffron in New Zealand is a delicate balancing act as saffron requires cold winters, hot summers, low humidity, free draining friable soil and just the right amount of moisture. The saffron bulb should be planted while dormant over the summer.

Soil should be prepared first by working in fertiliser. Saffron likes loose soil with a high nutrient content.

Jules recommends planting saffron corms (bulbs) 10cm deep and 10-15cm apart in raised beds. If good quality corms are planted, they will produce ‘daughters’ over the years which you will be able to use to increase your saffron crop.

One corm produces between six and twelve flowers a season. The original size of your corm will determine the size of its daughters and the quantity of flowers it produces.

Saffron flowers in its first season of planting, says Jules. Saffron flowers in April and each flower must be picked within 48 hours of it first appearing.

Ideally picking is done early in the day after the dew dries and before the sun begins to wilt the flowers.

The yield you can expect per hectare is dependent on how long the corms have been in the ground producing

daughters and on the growing and environmental conditions.

“If you have had the corms in for around four years and all the conditions are ideal, you might get as high as 24 kilos of saffron per hectare.

If conditions aren’t ideal you could get as little as 2.5 kilos, or none if conditions are completely unsuitable,” Jules said.

“Once the flowers are picked it is vital they are dried as quickly as possible to retain quality threads. Drying can be done with a dehydrator, hot air flow or freeze drying.

“All methods have their benefits but the most important thing is to dry as quickly as possible and not to over dry.”

Jules said harvesting saffron is very labour intensive and is one of the reasons why saffron is the world’s most expensive spice. ¢

The hint of warmer weather has me rifling through the seed packets hoping to get a head start on planting.

Add one teaspoon of ground coriander and one and a half teaspoons of cumin.

Chop into small chunks mushrooms — lots, any sort, and two or three zucchini.

Add to the pan along with a can of drained chick peas, a handful of chopped parsley, juice of half a lemon and half a cup of stock. Season the dish well with salt and freshly ground pepper.

Place in an oven dish and cook at 180C for about 20 minutes.

Sprinkle with chopped mint before serving. If this is your main dish, serve over rice.

You can see that this dish lends itself to additions or alterations so play around with the seasonings and vegetables according to your taste. Stir into some cooked pasta, top with grated cheese before giving it a quick grilling (not the questioning sort) and you have an easy lunch or supper dish. ¢

I usually begin with huge enthusiasm, sow far too many seeds, check twice a day for any sign of green shoots, get ridiculously excited when their tiny heads appear, forget to water them and so trot off to the garden shop for a punnet of seedlings.

This year may be different. I have never had any problem growing parsley which runs rampant thanks to selfseeding. Thyme and rosemary are easy and mint is plentiful but I never seem to have enough coriander. I want to have great swathes of the stuff this year as well as basil pesto. I shall keep you posted.

Nothing much is happening in the vegetable garden yet. I have searched for the first asparagus shoots (nothing) and started preparing the soil for the first planting of the lettuce. I have begun asking (read nagging) for the greenhouse

to be up and running again. It is to be moved to a better position but I am still waiting. The blossom on the fruit trees will burst open soon in a blaze of pink and white, followed by little buds with the promise of apricots, pears, apples, peaches and plums. Can’t wait.

Meals this week have taken advantage of a large bag of mushrooms picked up from the market. Spring onions, capsicums, mushrooms and spinach sautéed in a bit of olive oil, then two lightly beaten eggs poured over, cooked for a few minutes before a quick blast under the grill has provided lunch twice, and the mushrooms also formed the basis of Tuesday’s dinner as follows: Hasty tasty Tuesday dinner Put a heavy fry pan on the heat with a good glug of olive oil. Chop up an onion, two cloves of garlic and a chilli and sauté in the oil until softened.

As the days become warmer and the evenings longer drivers should expect to see more people out on our roadsides, walking, running, horse riding and cycling.

While some of our 100kmh roads in the Selwyn district aren’t as good as others for these activities, drivers need to be aware that other residents are allowed to, and will be out there.

Walkers, runners and cyclists all need to ensure they are clearly visible by wearing bright or reflective clothing and need to be as close to the left hand side of the road as safely possible.

Cyclists have other simple tools available to ensure they are seen such as lights and reflectors. While two cyclists can legally ride together, they should take into account the ‘keep left’ rule and not hold back traffic, and be aware that there are some places that won’t allow riding next to each other safely, for example on narrow roads or on corners.

When driving on the roads in the Selwyn district you often see horse riders and although most are on the roadsides, horses can take fright easily, so adjust your driving as soon as you see them.What do you think is the most common reaction to horses on the road by some drivers?

If you discuss this question amongst your family and friends, this could be a

couple of the answers you get, ‘horses shouldn’t be allowed on the road — they do not pay rego, they do not hold a licence, they do not have any insurance’ or ‘horses can move quickly out of my way if they need to, can’t they?’.

Many of our local horse riders have been riding around our roads for a long time. Yes, our roads and traffic volumes have got busier, but that’s no excuse for not giving them the space and the respect they need. Our district is mainly a rural area and many of us live here for that reason.

Just like many of our local cyclists, walkers and runners, they also make themselves more visible to drivers by wearing reflective vests or jackets themselves and even adding something reflective on their horse.

careful — slow down or stop if necessary •• At night, dip your headlights when approaching a horse •• Two vehicles should avoid passing near a horse As road users we all need to share

the road and give each other the respect of space.

Everyone using our rural roads and roadsides need to be alert, follow basic road rules and show courtesy to each other.

That’s called sharing the road. ¢

‘Live to ride’ programme resumes Selwyn motorcyclists are being offered the opportunity to develop their skills so they can be safer on the road.

Selwyn District Council is offering a subsidised ‘Live to Ride’ motorcycle skills coaching programme which aims to help reduce the number of motorcycle crashes in the district. The next sessions are being held on the weekends of September 27-28 and October 18-19 in Lincoln.

Riding a motorcycle is much more dangerous than driving a car. In New Zealand, the risk of being involved in a fatal or injury crash is 20 times higher for a motorcyclist than for a car driver.

From 2009 to 2013, there were 57 motorcycle crashes in the Selwyn district resulting in three fatalities, 34 serious injuries and 31 minor injuries. There were also eight non-injury crashes.

Selwyn district road safety coordinator Ngaire Tinning, said the number of motorcycle crashes is concerning and the council started offering the ‘Live to Ride’ training late last year to try to reduce the number and severity of crashes in Selwyn.

“Live to Ride provides subsidised motorcycle skills coaching where people can refresh their skills, and learn and practice new techniques.

“The courses are delivered by New Zealand Transport Agency qualified trainers and include training to develop braking, handling and safe driving skills.”

Since the Live to Ride programme started in Selwyn, 30 motorcyclists have taken part in the coaching sessions.

“Course evaluations by participants show the training is highly rated and has helped them improve their skills in a range of areas like turning on corners, coping with bad weather and hazards, and braking and steering.”

Coventry in Rhode Island United States has joined Akitakata-shi and Yubetsu-cho in Japan, Shandan in China and North Toraja Regency in Indonesia following the recent signing of a sister city agreement.

The relationship with Coventry was first established by former Selwyn Mayor Bill Woods and has been fostered by Selwyn’s Sister City committee.

Current Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe said Coventry will be Selwyn’s first Englishspeaking sister city and he is looking forward to future exchanges between the two areas.

“School exchanges and scholarship programmes with Selwyn’s other sister cities have enabled Selwyn students and residents to experience different cultures and allowed people to develop academic and friendship connections with people from other parts of the world.” In 2016, Coventry, which has

a population of around 35,000, will celebrate its 275th anniversary, while Rhode Island, which is a state in the New England region, has a rich history and contains around 20% of the historic landmarks in the US. It was the first of the original 13 colonies to declare independence from Britain in 1776.

Planning is already underway for the first small group from Selwyn to visit in October 2015.

In sister city exchanges, visitors typically fund the cost of the trip themselves but the host city often arranges homestay accommodation and makes arrangements for their guests to visit their district.

Regular trips to Coventry are planned every second year in the future, and the first exchange bringing visitors from Coventry to Selwyn is anticipated in March 2016. ¢

Many headstones were damaged in the magnitude 7.1 September 2010 earthquake which was centred near Charing Cross, about 10km from Darfield.

Since the Canterbury earthquakes, the council has been working through a staged programme of cemetery repairs to fix damaged headstones in public cemeteries.

Repairs to Lincoln, Greendale, Springston, Dunsandel, Brookside, Shands Road, and Weedons cemeteries are now complete.

Council’s earthquake recovery manager Douglas Marshall said around 1,115 headstones needed repairs as a result of the earthquakes and with repairs to Shands Road and Weedons cemeteries recently completed, 568 (51%) of these have been fixed.

“The amount of damage which occurred in cemeteries within Selwyn was quite varied and sites which suffered the most damage were repaired first.

“The cemeteries which suffered the most damage were those with older graves with ornate monuments like Lincoln and the sites close to the fault line like Greendale.”

He said the repair technique being used for monuments and graves involves stainless steel rods being installed which provide a secure foundation for headstones and monuments.

“The rods are extremely strong and after the repairs have been finished the headstones and monuments are actually stronger than a newly built headstone is required to be so they should be quite resilient in any future earthquake.”

Mr Marshall said the remaining repairs will be staged over the next two years and will include the cemeteries at Prebbleton, Bishops Corner, Killinchy, South Malvern, Kirwee, Kimberley, Waddington, Kowhai Pass, Hororata and Ellesmere Public and Catholic cemeteries.

“Damage to cemeteries was part of the wider infrastructure damage that occurred in the earthquakes as roads, bridges, water and wastewater and community buildings also needed to be fixed.

“The majority of infrastructure repairs in Selwyn have now been completed with all roads, bridges, water and waste water repairs finished and most community buildings fixed.” ¢
