The 11-year-old who recently took out the cadet class in the National Schools’ Championship was born to put the pedal-to-the-metal.

There were four generations of kart racers on his father’s side and three generations on his mother’s.

“I was quite surprised to win. I’d come close a few times. It was my last meeting in the cadet class so I really

wanted to finish it off by doing well and we did it,” Jacob said.

He was six years old when he got his first kart as a surprise Christmas present. The family took it down to the track for Jacob to practise on and four months later he had his first competitive race.

“I was pretty nervous when I did my first race. I didn’t really know what

was going to happen. I started at the back. I finished the race and then I set goals about who I needed to beat so that I could work my way to the front,” Jacob said.

Working his way quickly through the four levels of karting licence, Jacob soon found himself in the top placings of many of his races.

Hill joins Selwyn electorate race

A new phase for Malvern St John is about to start with the commencement of a purpose built headquarters in Bray Street, Darfield.

Selwyn voters will have a least three electorate candidates to choose between at this year’s general election.

With plans submitted to council, all that is needed is the formal go-ahead and work will begin on the new project, according to Malvern St John committee member Bob Mugford.

“We hope to get it started in the next six weeks for an early 2015 completion,” Mr Mugford said.

The building will have a large meeting room with full kitchen facilities, a separate area for crew including a rest facility and a large garage to house their two emergency vehicles.

“The building is future proofed, so there’s potential later to enlarge the building at both ends if required.”

Mr Mugford said with an IL4 government standard rating the building can also be used during a civil emergency.

Malvern St John has been going for 55 years. Its original headquarters in the historic former Malvern County Council building on Currie Street suffered significant damage during the September 2010 earthquake and was deemed uninhabitable. Since then Malvern St John has used various

venues around Darfield while waiting to secure their new location.

Malvern St John ambulance officer and committee member Ross Meder said the Bray Street site was purchased in 2011 and was chosen for its central location and size.

He said due to an insurance payout and funds generated from a very generous community they have been able to get the project going.

“To remain operational we need to generate some more funds. This will allow us to continue to function,” Mr Meder said.

Malvern St John hoped to raise $250,000 which would go towards replacing vital equipment such as defibrillators and to provide first aid services for community events Mr Meder said.

This project coincides with a new emergency hub in Rolleston.

St John in Rolleston and the New Zealand Fire Service are in talks with Selwyn District Council over plans to join forces to create a new base on Kidman Street. ¢

Two-term Selwyn district councillor Peter Hill is the latest to throw his hat into the ring becoming the Green Party’s electorate candidate in Selwyn. He does not appear on the party’s list.

With less than a week to go until election nominations close Mr Hill joins sitting National MP Amy Adams and Labour’s Gordon Dickson as the three declared candidates.

Mr Hill replaces Green MP Eugenie Sage as the Green’s candidate in Selwyn with Ms Sage switching to the Banks Peninsula electorate due to boundary changes.

Selwyn is considered a safe National seat with Ms Adams enjoying a 2011 election night majority of over 19,450 votes.

This will be Mr Dickson’s first tilt at the Selwyn electorate for Labour following his move to Rolleston to aid with Canterbury’s earthquake recovery. A life member of the Labour Party Mr Dickson has previously stood as a Labour candidate in the Kaimai and Tarawera electorates.

New rules for extended warranties u by Maree Gallagher, Selwyn CAB

If a business wants to sell you an extended warranty they have to explain to you what, if any, extra protections it will give you over and above the rights you already have under the Consumer Guarantees Act. If you purchase an extended warranty, you’ll have the right to cancel it within five working days of buying it — no questions asked.

An extended warranty is an additional warranty you can buy to give you extra protection in addition to the normal protections you have when you buy goods and services. Depending on the terms and conditions of the extended warranty, it may or may not provide you with more cover than the Consumer Guarantees Act and it will cost you.

A manufacturer’s warranty is a guarantee from the manufacturer the goods will last for a specified minimum time period.

The manufacturer decides the terms and conditions of the warranty, which may be more or less than the cover offered by the Consumer Guarantees Act. You would not expect to have to pay to be covered by a manufacturer’s warranty.

An extended warranty is probably most useful for goods you buy for commercial purposes (eg a vacuum cleaner for your business premises) and for goods which are designed to be used commercially (the Consumer Guarantees Act doesn’t cover you for commercial goods even if you intend to use them for domestic purposes) — less so for goods which you are likely to replace before the extended warranty runs out.

Often an extended warranty is nothing more than a way for the business to get more for their product without increasing the ticket price. In some businesses, salespeople get commission for selling an extended warranty which may go some way in explaining their enthusiasm.

Hororata flooding Dear editor, Apparently the Selwyn Council believes that it is okay to throw ratepayers’ money around trying to defend the indefensible.

In Hororata there is a surface flooding problem which is caused by the lack of drainage. Some years ago the drain which served the houses by the roundabout was filled in.

Every year in high rainfall there is a flooding problem, the council is prepared to go to the district court at huge expense to get an injunction against reopening the drain, the cost of which would be less than the court

costs. They have twice lost their case in the Disputes Tribunal.

Their argument is that surface flooding (stormwater) is the responsibility of the landowner, this in spite of the fact that Hororata ratepayers are charged a separate rate for stormwater treatment.

Also bear in mind that in the case of the property owners concerned the surplus water comes from off site.

Come on council, you cannot charge a fee for something and then expect the ratepayer to be individually financially responsible for doing the work.

Earthquakes awaken hidden talent

It all started with a picture of elephants running through a room, and resulted in Darfield High School home economics teacher Sarah Waters’ first children’s’ book being released recently.

Ms Waters was inspired to write and illustrated her self-published book titled The News after listening to her nephew’s descriptions of the Canterbury earthquakes.

“I talked to Jack when he was a toddler and he told me the earthquakes were like elephants running through his house. It started from there,” Ms Waters said.

The book is set in a classroom of children at morning news time and carries an earthquake safety message.

Ms Waters said she’d always loved to draw and had long held aspirations of putting together a picture book.

“I used to make books for my nephews, but nothing this elaborate” she said.

The book took Ms Waters three years to complete. She worked on the watercolour pencil drawings during the school holidays.

“Jack loves the book. He thinks it’s awesome. He can relate to parts and recognises himself in the story.”

Unable to find a publisher willing to take on the first time author Ms Waters backed herself and organised for the book to be published, paying for the first print run of 200, which has almost sold out in the first week.

“I’ve been selling them through word of mouth and on social media, like Facebook.”

Ms Waters plans to write more books and hopes to be picked up by a publisher. ¢

Jacob’s mother Diana said the secret to Jacob’s success was the way he approached the sport.

“He did lots of practise and set goals that were reachable,” Diana said.

She said the whole family were involved in Jacob’s carting, especially his father Mark who spends hours with

him, helping him practise and working on his kart.

“We all enjoy it and have our roles to play in the team,” she said.

Jacob said his father’s friend Chris Charles of Darfield had been invaluable to his success because of all the engineering work he had done on the kart.

“He’s helped me win all my titles,” Jacob said. ¢

Calling Selwyn home

This week The Record’s reporter Belinda Cullen-Reid talked to the winner of the Sensational Selwyn Young Achievers Award, 17-year-old alpine ski racer Eliza Grigg of Hororata. We wanted to know about her skiing career, living in Selwyn and what her recent award meant to her.

When did you start skiing?

I am the youngest child with two older brothers who fueled my competitive nature. When they went skiing I was determined to follow suit. To say I liked it would be an understatement — I absolutely loved it. Not so much the turning to begin with, but the speed I guess.

How did you know that skiing was going to be more than just a hobby?

I’ve always been incredibly passionate about skiing, especially alpine ski racing. I think I knew it would be more than a hobby for an incredibly long time but it didn’t really hit home till about a year after my parents enrolled me at

the age of eight in Team Hutt (an alpine ski race programme based at Mt Hutt) with the goal of improving my skiing technique. I won the Mapei Mackenzie ski scholarship when I was nine and I think that sealed the deal for me. It was when I realised I was actually pretty good and I also realised I wanted to go further with the sport.

What do you like about skiing — who are your inspirations?

The unpredictability of the sport has a bizarre appeal to me as well as the knowledge that I am the one in control of my performance because out on the course it is just me. I enjoy the thrill and speed, the excitement when you

can just feel how much your skiing has improved. There will never be two runs that are the same so in my mind it lacks the ability to become boring.

Since a very young age, the Austrian power-house Hermann Maier has been my inspiration. He had to fight for his position on the Austrian Men’s team when no one believed he could do it. He has overcome so many hurdles, including a motorcycle accident that should have taken his legs. However, he never stopped believing that he could do anything he set his mind to and I have been fortunate enough to ski with this phenomenal man.

Council reviewing pokie policy

Selwyn District Council is reviewing its Gambling Venue Policy in the face of rapid changes in the district’s demographics.

The policy, which was adopted in 2004 and reviewed without change in 2009, allows for a ratio of one pokie gambling machine to every 300 residents in Selwyn.

Stagnation in the number of pokie gambling machines coupled with population growth in Selwyn has meant the actual ratio of machines per person is currently one machine for every 550 people, according to SDC research and policy advisor Mel Renganathan.

“The current legislation requires that councils develop policies to control gambling to minimise gambling harm,” Ms Renganathan said.

“As part of the review the council would consider options around maintaining, decreasing and or increasing the number of gambling machines.”

Ms Renganathan said around $3.3 million was spent in Selwyn each year on pokie machines which were mostly located in Selwyn’s pubs and taverns, including 27 in Rolleston, 11 in Darfield and 8 in West Melton.

The council did not keep information on the number of people with gambling problems in the district.

Sara Epperson from the Problem Gambling Foundation New Zealand (PGFNZ) said Selwyn has the highest

ratio of people per pokie machine in the country, and have one of the lowest amounts of spending on pokie machines gambling.

Ms Epperson said she would not like to see the current gambling policy changed to allow for more machines in Selwyn.

“Weakening Selwyn’s gambling policy would be inviting gambling harm into Selwyn. It would also buck national trends, which have seen a gradual decrease in machines and expenditure,” Ms Epperson said.

The PGFNZ is encouraging all councils in New Zealand to adopt a sinking lid policy for gambling.

“A sinking lid is a ban on new machines and venues. This doesn’t affect existing venues, but means the community sees a gradual decrease in pokie machines over time as venues close.

“A sinking lid acknowledges that gambling harm is unacceptable and preventable, and the council could demonstrate real leadership and vision by choosing to support a healthier policy,” Ms Epperson said.

Meanwhile, Ms Renganathan said council receives gaming money from several trusts through the council controlled organisation The Selwyn

Rural games announces naming sponsor The New Zealand Rural Games, a new event celebrating the country’s traditional sports and rural heritage, has signed a three-year sponsorship agreement with Toyota New Zealand.

The event will now be known as the Hilux New Zealand Rural Games.

The inaugural games will take place in Queenstown over Waitangi weekend next year. The games will showcase competitive sports including sheep dog trials, coal shovelling, wood chopping, Highland Games and speed shearing in which David Fagan, five-time world shearing champion from Te Kuiti, is planning to compete.

In addition to traditional rural sports, the games will feature fun participation events for spectators including kids and a full festival programme of live music and entertainment.

Hilux New Zealand Rural Games founder and trustee, Steve Hollander said the agreement was a major boost six months out from the inaugural event.

A wide variety of entries has been received for this year’s Lincoln University Foundation South Island Farmer of the Year competition, with meat, wool and dairy dominating the range of farm types competing, according to Foundation chairman Ben Todhunter.

Canterbury, Otago and Southland are particularly well represented among the entries, which include high and low country operations ranging from a large-scale pig operation to beef cattle specialists, dairy farms, sheep (both meat and wool breeds) and deer farms. Two of the entries include a cropping component to their business.

Ben Todhunter said interest in the competition has been steadily growing.

He said people are realising the awards’ role as a promoter of excellence in farming as well as direct benefits to the entrants themselves in terms of the independent evaluation of their business provided as part of the judging process.

Deadline approaches for Enterprising Rural Women Awards Time is running out for Selwyn women to enter into the 2014 Enterprising Rural Women Awards.

The deadline for entries into this year’s awards which are into their sixth year is September 5.

Rural Women New Zealand national president, Wendy McGowan said the awards attract good publicity for both entrants and winners.

“Rural Women New Zealand’s aim is to grow dynamic rural communities and giving a boost to women in rural business is a very positive way of achieving this.”

Last year’s winner, Diane Coleman of Treeline Native Nursery, is urging women to enter, though she said she needed encouragement to do so herself.

“Don’t be afraid to go out on a limb, because that is where the fruit is,” Ms Coleman said.

“Winning this award has been a once in a lifetime opportunity that was challenging, exciting, scary, fun, humbling and has really put my business on the map.”

The awards attract diverse entries, and past winners include a traditionalstyle cheese maker, a farm walk and homestay enterprise, a forestry trucking company, and a merino sock manufacturer.

The award categories reflect this diversity: Love of the Land — for all landbased business, from animals to agriculture; Help! I need somebody — for businesses providing any type of service, from retailers to agricultural contractors; Making it in Rural — for businesses that involve manufacturing or creativity; Stay, Play Rural — for businesses engaged in rural tourism or hospitality.

Wool levy proposed to aid growth u by Kent Caddick

To raise interest in the upcoming wool levy vote the Wool Levy Group has launched a website to inform sheep farmers about the issue.

The Wool Levy Group, which is made up of sheep industry professionals including farmers, was founded in 2012 to study grower investment in the industry.

In 2013, the group decided there was a strong case for re-introducing a wool levy in order to reinvigorate the industry and restore a focus on wool production and profitability.

The proposed levy is for three cents per kilogram of greasy and slipe wool.

According to the chair of the Wool Levy Group Sandra Faulkner the levy would raise around $4.6 million on an estimated 154,000 tonnes of wool and would fund activities which would support and complement work being done by existing organisations.

She said specific areas to be improved through the funding would be communication, education and innovation.

One thing you have to decide when faced with the prospect of creating a brand new garden in an empty section is what style of garden you want.

There are so many choices out there, and much comes down to personal taste.

Don’t be taken in by latest trends or following what your neighbours do. Instead flick through some pictures online or in magazines or gardening books to look at different styles of garden. Imagine yourself in these gardens.

How does each one make you feel?

Take note of the ones you like and ask yourself what is it that you like about them? Is it the clean lines and symmetry? Is it the wide open spaces?

Do you prefer the snug feeling that large enveloping plants and trees give you?

Do you like a sensational spread of colour or do you prefer the harmony of simple lush greenery?

Give your garden a definite style. New Zealand natives have certainly come back in fashion in recent years as people realise the benefits of planting flora that once grew naturally in the landscape and attracts the once wonderful bird life all but lost from the Canterbury Plains.

I believe each garden should contain at least one little green spot, an area that encourages native birds to visit as they hop from one garden to the next.

Another style of garden, favoured among vintage lovers, is the cottage garden which harks back to Victorian England with its pretty colourful displays of dainty delights growing recklessly and wild. Well suited to character houses, these gardens suit a villa or quaint cottage style home setting. Their fussy overgrown and haphazard style is not everyone’s cup of tea.

Of course the tremendous upkeep of gardens of this style is also a factor to consider. However the romantic in me adores them, and will always save at least some space in my landscaping for a corner of cottage style garden.

Many other cultural influences have entered into New Zealand gardening design. In contrast to the traditional English cottage garden is the Japanese style garden. Well suited to the minimalist design of house many new
