Weedon-based pilot and aviation company owner, Mark Watson, has taken out one of the major awards at this year’s prestigious Director of Civil Aviation Awards for what the judging panel describes as his pragmatic and safety-focussed methodology.

Mark who has tested a countless number of pilots in his 20 years as examiner and trainer and has flown upwards of 24,000 hours himself, has made it his mission to help bring budding commercial pilots and flight instructors to the highest standards possible.

In presenting the award, the judging panel described Mark as “[a] greatly respected professional within the fabric of New Zealand flight training.”

Nevertheless, from Mark’s point of view, the award still comes as something of a surprise.

“It was not expected and certainly wasn’t one I worked toward, so it came as a very pleasant surprise and an honour.”

NEWS briefs NZSO returns

Selwyn classical music lovers are in for a treat next month with the return of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

The NZSO will bring its Classical Hits show to the Air Force Museum in Hornby on September 19, where it will perform some of the most popular works of classical music.

Classical Hits will feature some of the best-known music by the great composers Franz Schubert, Claude Debussy and Pyotr Tchaikovsky, as well as the world premiere of a new work by acclaimed New Zealand composer, Gillian Whitehead.

Gillian Whitehead’s new work, Turanganui, has been written to mark the 250th anniversary in 2019 of Captain James Cook’s arrival in New Zealand and his meetings with Maori.

Classical Hits will be conducted by NZSO Associate Conductor Hamish McKeich, who earlier this year conducted the orchestra for its sold out and critically acclaimed performances of Star Wars: A New Hope in the New Zealand Festival.

“The Classical Hits selection has been especially chosen to appeal to both regular concert goers and those new to seeing the national orchestra perform live,” Mr McKeich said.

Selwyn pilot wins major award

A long-serving Rolleston social worker was awarded the Community Service Award at the recent 2018 Selwyn Awards.

Chris Allan says he is delighted to have won the award, but he says it came as a special surprise.

“This year’s award nominations included some outstanding individuals and organisations doing great work in our communities — and that is what I think makes this award even more special to me,” he said.

Mr Allan is head of the Joshua Foundation, a community service organisation and member of the Canterbury Youth Worker Collective. He is described in his award nomination as “a humble yet very dedicated person who is totally focussed upon helping vulnerable and underprivileged young people in [the] community.”

Among other community activities, Mr Allan and the Joshua Foundation are facilitators of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Awards.

In addition, he works with special needs persons in and around Rolleston and is noted for his innovative work inside the region’s prisons.

The latter included organising New Zealand’s first marathon inside a prison.

The event was at the Christchurch Men’s Youth Prison and raised $400 for Te Whare Hauora — the Christchurch women’s refuge in Aranui.

Mr Allan is acknowledged as a tireless worker by day for the Joshua Foundation. Nevertheless, most evenings and weekends he continues to work with young people and leads weekend tramps, including a recent one for Rolleston’s Waitaha Learning

Mr Allan says he is humbled by the award but doesn’t consider it his alone.

Throughout his career, he has flown many different types type of mediumsized aircraft including fixed wing and helicopters. That included a stint flying Boeing 737s for Virgin Australia.

Since starting Wyndon Aviation, he has focussed mainly on helicopters and that, he says, involves a wide range of services — among them scenic flights, high country adventures, flight training and executive charter. Mark is on call for firefighting services.

It also allows him to combine two of his passions — flying and hunting and fishing in the high country.

Mark has a third passion — farming.

Moreover, it is from a farm in Weedon that he and his partner, Lynda Harrap (also an accomplished pilot), operate Wyndon Aviation. The company has its own airstrip and hanger on the farm.

The Director of Civil Aviation Awards are presented each year to those who have in the opinion of the judging panel, “have made an outstanding contribution to aviation safety in New Zealand and are an inspiration for the industry.”

Lincoln skatepark opens after revamp

The Lincoln Domain skatepark will be officially reopened this weekend, and the Selwyn District Council is throwing a bit of a party.

The Governor-General, the Rt Hon Dame Patsy Reddy, spent time in the Selwyn district recently with Lincoln University one of the stops on her whirlwind tour.

The Governor-General was accompanied by her husband, Sir David Gascoigne, on the visit and the pair toured several key sites in Selwyn. They started at Ngati Moki Marae at Taumutu and finished at Lincoln University’s Ashley Dene Research and Development Station.

p Lincoln’s new skatepark is ready and waiting for skaters

The official opening of the revamped skatepark will be held on Sunday, from 11am to 1pm. The event, hosted by skating retailer Cheapskates will include music, food, spot prizes, skateboarding demonstrations and lessons on skatepark etiquette.

Selwyn District Council’s property and commercial manager, Douglas Marshall, said the redesign of the skatepark, led by designer Dave North, achieves the initial goal of being a quality facility where younger skaters and scooter riders can rapidly progress, learn and have fun.

“Council is grateful for the support of the community while the changes were being made,” Mr Marshall said.

“We understand that locals have had to be really patient while we get the skatepark right; however, we’re confident locals will really enjoy this new facility.”

He said changes to the skatepark’s design were also influenced by

discussions with local skaters and other skatepark designers.

“We’ve actively listened to the community’s ideas and have incorporated some of these into the new design.” Mr Marshall.

While the skatepark is ready to use some finishing touches are being carried out this week.

Council’s community projects and facilities manager, Cam Warr, said this includes the final shaping and completion of the retaining wall and fencing will also be installed above one of the bowls.

“Our contractors will continue to be on site to do some detail work, but the areas being worked on will be coned off, and the skatepark will be safe for everyone to use.”

Mr Warr said council wants to stay in touch with local skaters and is open to receiving feedback about the new skatepark. ¢

Landmark projects get final okay

Ross Scholarship recipient named

Two landmark projects for Rolleston have been given the green light by the Selwyn District Council.

Research assistant Simon Duff, of Lincoln University’s Agribusiness and Economics Research Unit, has been named as the second recipient of the recently established Ross Scholarship.

At its meeting last week, council approved a $14.8 million extension to the Selwyn Aquatic Centre, as well as the design concepts for the new Rolleston Library and Community Centre, set to cost just over $22 million. Mayor Sam Broughton said he is excited about the two landmark projects.

“Giving these projects the green light is a watershed day for Selwyn, the Aquatic Centre development will help future-proof our district’s leisure and sports needs, while the new Rolleston Library and Community Centre will help create an inspiring destination in Rolleston.”Mayor Broughton said.

The extension to the Selwyn Aquatic Centre will see a 10-lane, 25m pool added to the current facility, as well as a reconfiguration of the existing pool.

“We believe the 10-lane option works well for our growing population, as well as providing more room for learn to swim and leisure users,” Mayor Broughton said.

The proposed Rolleston Library and Community Centre is set to be the focal point of the new Rolleston Town Centre development at Rolleston Reserve.

Mayor Broughton said he’s confident the facility will be an asset for the people of Selwyn.

“It’s the first step in developing an attractive town centre, and I know everyone is looking forward to being able to enjoy a range of activities in a vibrant community space.”

Work on both projects is expected to be completed toward the middle of 2020. ¢

Waihora has taken out the symbol of Ellesmere rugby supremacy the Coleman Shield and in doing so has completed the Canterbury Country rugby double.

After lifting the Canterbury Country Combined Cup earlier this season, Waihora downed Darfield 20–10 in the Ellesmere division one final at Darfield Domain on Saturday.

With two of its key players, fullback Mark Maitland and halfback Harry Kirk, playing for Canterbury against the All Blacks and Otago the night before, Waihora were a little slow to start in the final with Darfield scoring the only points of the first half, a penalty to fullback Alex Parker.

During the first half Waihora turned down a number of kickable penalties to go in search of a five-pointer — but that tactic changed in the second spell, and a Harry Kirk penalty had Waihora level after just four minutes.

Another Kirk penalty put Waihora in front, and that lead was extended five minutes later when Ryan Knoning plunged over for a try following a well-worked line-out move. The Kirk conversion had Waihora leading 11–3.

With one round robin match to go until the semi-finals of the Selwyn premier netball competition, Broadfield is installing itself as favourites to break the Lincoln stranglehold on the title, which it has held for the last five years.

In one of the tightest competitions in years, all six teams are still in with a mathematical chance of making the semis.

However, Broadfield with its 55–42 win over Greenpark B at the Lincoln Event Centre on Saturday is three points clear at the top of the table and assured of a spot in the semis.

Lincoln, which is in a rebuilding season with lots of new young talent on its books, is in second place on the points table, three points behind Broadfield, following a 70–70 draw with Greenpark A on Saturday afternoon.

The two points for the draw were vital to Greenpark A’s chances of making the semis as it allowed them to close the gap on Southbridge and Greenpark B to just one point. Southbridge was a

relative comfortable winner against Rolleston, 67–49, on the weekend and a win against Greenpark B this coming weekend should see them through to the semis. Rolleston, which is currently bottom of the table, could still make the semis but will need to beat Greenpark A this weekend and hope Southbridge can down Greenpark B. The other match this weekend will be a top of the table clash between Lincoln and Broadfield giving the winner bragging rights heading into the semis.

In the Premier two division, West Melton, Southbridge B, Lincoln B and Prebbleton are all assured of semi-final spots, with West Melton undefeated so far this round and likely to continue that form when it plays bottom placed Broadfield B this weekend. ¢

Do you have an older cat? Noticed that she is less active these days, sleeping more, grooming less, or maybe lost a little weight?

Are you putting it down to your cat just getting old?

Weight loss, grooming less, sleeping more or being less active can mean more than ‘just getting old’ — usually these are signs of underlying issues.

Many of these can be successfully treated or well-managed, making your cat live a longer and happier life.

Common causes of weight loss in older cats include hyperthyroidism, dental disease and chronic kidney disease.

Hyperthyroidism is a hormonal disorder, usually caused by a benign tumour in one or both of the thyroid glands, which are located in the neck.

These tumours cause the thyroid gland to overproduce thyroid hormones, which are important for regulating metabolism.

When a cat’s thyroid hormone level is too high, its metabolic rate increases causing many body systems to work harder than normal. Problems associated with hyperthyroidism include damage to the heart, kidneys, liver and eyes. The good news is that hyperthyroidism is a treatable and potentially curable disease.

Dental disease is common in cats, even more so when they get older.

Decreased food intake, weight loss and reduced grooming are possible symptoms. Many cats still eat normally, but dental disease is painful and left untreated, it can cause damage to internal organs such as the kidneys or

heart. Owners are often worried about the anaesthesia involved with dental procedures, but with proper monitoring and the right precautions in the vast majority of cases, the benefits far outweigh the risks.

Chronic kidney disease in older cats is commonly the result of an agerelated decline in kidney function. It is a disease that tends to get worse over time. Unfortunately, it is not curable, but management of the disease can slow the progression, and cats can sometimes experience a good quality of life for many years after being diagnosed with the disease.

If your ageing cat has become less active and resting more, there is a high chance she or he has developed arthritis.

Arthritis in cats is common, and one of the most underdiagnosed conditions in cats. Although your cat is not telling you that they experience discomfort, it is very likely that they are. Treatment can make a big difference.

Cats are good at masking disease.

Often it is hard to realise how much a condition affects our furry cat friend until they are treated, becoming a happier, ‘younger’ cat again.

If you feel your cat has ‘gotten old’, book them in with your vet for a health check. You may be able to make them feel younger again. ¢

The Lincoln and Districts Community Care Association coordinates health and social services support for those in need in the wider Selwyn area from their base in Lincoln.

We have new purpose-built premises at 16 Lyttelton Street, Lincoln, and we cover the area from Selwyn River in the south and Sandy Knolls Road in the west, to the Hilltop Tavern in the east and Halswell Junction Road in the north.

We are privileged to have a large pool of volunteers who deliver most of our services.

If you would like to become one of our volunteers, please call us to discuss how you could become involved.

Services we provide for our community: Meals on Wheels A main meal and dessert delivered five days a week for subsidised and paying clients in certain areas. Hot or frozen meal options are available. All dietary needs catered for.

Selwyn Lead The Way Free mentoring programme for those in Selwyn District. Trained volunteers work one on one to teach skills, eg vegetable growing, menu planning, cooking on a budget, budgeting, writing a CV, changing car tyres, knitting and sewing.

Lincoln Home Care and Share Free, day care for isolated elderly — Tuesdays from 10am to 3pm. Trained volunteers run activities and organise outings. Morning and afternoon teas and

There was a time when Jeep was the one and only word for a machine, which could take you anywhere. Well — there was another word, but it was very long, very German, and the year was 1941.
