Launched by the government in July 2016, Predator Free 2050 aims to protect the country’s threatened native species and benefit our regional economies through primary industries and tourism, by getting rid of introduced predators — possums, rats and stoats — by 2050.

Mr Chignell said an estimated 25 million eggs or chicks of native birds are killed by introduced predators every year.

“That’s a huge number and it is the path to extinction for many of our endemic bird species. In turn, those species are indicative of New Zealand’s total biodiversity; if they are under threat, it means all our fauna and flora is under threat. This makes the task ahead a crucial one for all New Zealanders.”

Mr Chignell co-founded Treescape New Zealand in 1981 and previously spent 37 years as co-CEO. The trans-Tasman company specialises in tree, vegetation and environmental management with more than 500 employees. Mr Chignell also led the development of an Ecological Services division of Treescape, providing restoration services for the enhancement of indigenous habitat, flora and fauna with a strong speciality in animal pest control and eradication.

Ms Taylor said the board has made major headway with their busy work programme.

“We now have a draft science strategy to develop the breakthrough technology needed to achieve a predator-free New Zealand, which we plan to make public later this year.

“We’re also developing a strategy for managing additional Crown funding for large-scale collaborative predator control projects and expect to announce our plans for identifying, selecting and funding suitable projects as the year progresses.”

Mr Chignell’s focus in the first six months as CEO is to meet with all key players, stakeholders and organisations currently involved in predator eradication. He also plans to meet with philanthropic companies committed to New Zealand’s biodiversity.

Taranaki student wins youth scholarship

Silver Fern Farms has awarded six Plate to Pasture Youth Scholarships to a group of young New Zealanders who are developing their careers in the red meat, food and farming industries.

Silver Fern Farms chief executive Dean Hamilton said the talent emerging from the scholarship applications indicates a bright future for the broader red meat sector.

The panel had a challenging job making their selections from 79 applications.

“Silver Fern Farms is proud to be supporting the future of farming and the communities where we live and work,” said Mr Hamilton.

Scholarships recipients, Grave Van Tilborg (Northland), Hugh Jackson (Waikato and Bay of Plenty), Jake Jarman (Western North Island), Nicole Harvey (Eastern North Island), Joshua Kirk (Upper South Island) and Zac Johnston (Lower South Island), each receive $5,000 to further their careers in the sector.

Western North Island scholarship recipient Jake Jarman was raised on his family’s dairy farm south of Inglewood.

He is currently studying towards an agricommerce degree at Lincoln University.

He hopes winning a scholarship will provide many opportunities for networking and meeting exciting people.

“Also I knew I have something really positive to offer Silver Fern Farms and I would make a difference for them.”

Mr Hamilton said the winners delivered ideas on a vast range of industry issues.

“These included a fresh look at dealing with biosecurity challenges, the development of food technology processes to extend the shelf life and flavour of red meat, exploring ways to sustainably add value to farming

businesses, selling the story of New Zealand’s natural ‘artisan agriculture’ to the world, as well as challenging the industry to think big and be bold.

“By 2020 we aim to have invested $120,000 in scholarships to support 24 young people in their careers in our industry from plate to pasture.”

Retur n to dair y farming roots pays off

by Denise Gunn Although Jerome Grey had connections with the dairy industry from a young age, he initially started a joinery apprenticeship on leaving high school in Australia.

J

erome’s great-grandfather Dominic Luond began dairy farming near Opunake. Dominic’s son Trevor took over the family dairy farm when he was 20 years old and farmed there for close to 20 years. Trevor then sold the farm and a bought a 160ha dairy farm in Tikorangi as well as a farmlet in the Waitara Valley. Jerome spent many of his school holidays on the farmlet, giving him a taste of rural life.

During his secondary schooling in Australia, Jerome hadn’t considered dairy farming as a career. But Jerome

found the joinery apprenticeship he began at the age of 16 didn’t really seem to suit him.

“My brother Jesse Luond was a farm assistant for Craig Lynsky on his 500cow dairy farm, and he suggested that I come over and he would organise me a job.”

“I thought it was a good idea so I saved up money for a flight and came in May 2012.”

Jerome began working for Matt and Megan Symmons on their 170-cow farm, helping during calving and some relief

milking. Although it took awhile to get physically and mentally used to the early starts and long hours, he really enjoyed the work. After completing a National Certificate in Dairy Farming — Animal Health and Husbandry (level three), paid for by the Symmons, Jerome developed a real passion for farming.

“Matt Symmons has been a great mentor and friend to me,” said Jerome.

A 2IC position for Ben Dickie on his 500-cow farm near Waverley followed.

‘He taught me a lot about being professional and the technical and business side of farming as well as staff management.”

Jerome is currently working as senior herd manager on Ian and Judith Armstrong’s 296ha Opunake farm.

Charlie and Jody McCraig, the 2014 New Zealand Sharemilker/Equity Farmers of the Year, are sharemilking on the property. The farm, which has a milking herd of 1,000 cows, also runs 300 calves, 250 rising two-year-olds, 30 bulls and 40 Kiwi-cross carryovers.

The 24-year-old has learnt a lot from different employees on the farm, including his father Dominic Luond who has taught him about mastitis management.

“My uncle Kerrin Luond, and my brother Jesse Luond, are really top class farmers and have also both taught me heaps.”

Among the many aspects of dairy farming that Jerome finds satisfying, is helping animals.

“I enjoy helping animals most of all — anything like treating lame feet, helping cows if they are having trouble calving,

getting calves out of the cold and to some warm milk, and treating cows for milk fever which can sometimes be a bit touch and go.”

“There’s no better feeling than saving a cow that is close to death and getting her back up.”

“Also there are a lot of good, interesting, smart people in the industry who I enjoy meeting, discussing ideas with and learning from,” he said.

Jerome said he has made many good friends through working in the dairy industry.

Outside of farming, Jerome’s other true passion is surfing.

“I’m so lucky to have such awesome surf just a few kilometres from my work and home, I also like going surfcasting with mates, and working on my car.” he said.

Jerome was also nominated as a Young Achiever (20-24 years) in the 2016 South Taranaki Youth to Work awards.

Last year he was runner-up in the Taranaki Dairy Trainee of the Year and this year placed third in that category.

As Jerome dealt with the practical aspects of the competition on a daily basis, he studied most nights to prepare for the theory.

“I also worked on my career goals and personal goals which Charlie helped me with quite a lot.”

Taking part in the Taranaki Dairy Industry Awards gave Jerome an opportunity to think about his goals and how to achieve them.

Woodchopping has taken Jack all over New Zealand and across the Tasman to compete

“Bruce gave me the basics and Shane taught me a lot of what I now know.”

By the age of 19, Jack had already won three world titles in the woodchopping arena. He was the youngest ever winner of a woodchopping title when, at the age of 17, he took home the 16 Inch Underhand World Trophy. His second world title was winning the David Bolstad Memorial World Title in Rotorua. Jack broke another record as the youngest winner in history to take out the 15 Inch Underhand World Title at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in 2015 when he was 18 years old.

Jack said this win is the biggest highlight of his woodchopping career to

date. In the past two years he added another two underhand world titles, the 13 Inch Underhand Championship at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, and placed second in the 15 Inch Underhand World Title.

“In the 2016/17 New Zealand season I was only beaten once in the underhand championships,” he said.

Woodchopping has taken Jack all over New Zealand and across the Tasman to compete. Winning larger prize money overseas helps to subsidise competition costs. He said the Sydney Royal Easter Show is the Wimbledon of woodchopping and he always aims to be at his peak for this event. This year,

Jack, who is sponsored by Husqvarna, was named the Young New Zealand Rural Sportsperson of the Year. The award acknowledged up-and-coming Kiwi youth participating in professional rural sport.

“It was a pretty awesome feeling to win that award, It is good to see that woodchopping is starting to get recognised more in the New Zealand sporting sector.” he said.

At the Hilux New Zealand Rural Games held earlier this year, Jack came third in the ANZAXE Trans-Tasman Wood Chopping Championship.

Shane won the title. Jack is aiming for more competitions in Australia and

the amount of room for improvement there is in New Zealand at the moment, despite us having a comparatively high standard of living.

There I was, desperate to get out of New Zealand and volunteer in Nepal, when there is so much work to be done in our own backyard. My mother told me this before I left and she was right (as usual), but I guess sometimes you have to experience things for yourself before you fully understand.

Travel has definitely made me glad to call NZ home, and the recent conversations have made me want to protect what we have and stop things slipping back any further. When I return I’ll endeavour to harness some of the anger that’s been stirred up and use it as motivation to actually DO something instead of just talking about it.

I’ve also been thinking a lot about empathy and what it means. It’s been something that’s come up a lot lately.

The more you learn about the world and the obstacles people face, naturally, the more understanding you gain. Simply being exposed to people who are different to you can change your perspective and this is why travel

can be so eye opening. At the same time I think empathy is something that doesn’t necessarily have to come from experience.

Just because you haven’t experienced something yourself doesn’t mean you can’t try to understand it. This was a discussion that came up a lot with my friends and in the media recently. It was leading the national conversation about what kind of world we want to live in especially after Metiria Turei announced she had lied to WINZ in order to provide for her child.

Her defendant’s begged for the other camp to have some empathy.

Perhaps, because of the way our society is organised under capitalism, empathy isn’t immediately financially rewarded and therefore we are taught to see it as weakness? I’d like to think that helping people up instead of kicking them when they are down leads to closer, happier, healthier communities, which results in a flourishing economy in the long run.

This conversation about what we value as a nation is so important, and whilst we are on the subject I’ll take this opportunity to remind everyone to vote

on September 23rd! It’s a privilege and throwing it away is an insult to everyone in the world who wishes they could vote but can’t.

Back in Phibun there’s only one more week of teaching left before I hit the road. It’s weird to think I won’t ever see my kids again. They’ll grow up and go on to live lives I’ll know nothing about. I’ll miss them a lot. It’s always surprising the things you learn from each new

experience. I never thought I’d learn so much about my own country whilst living in rural Thailand. Nor did I think I’d find out what lights that angry fire in my belly whilst being so far away from the things that light it.

A quick phone call from my neighbour Eru enticed me to attend a meeting at the Poututerangi Marae in Te Puna. The main speaker was Mike Scaddan a previous headmaster of Te Puna School, and a strong advocate to stop the use of toxic chemical sprays throughout the Te Puna kiwifruit, avocado and citrus orchards.

At the end of World War II, large chemical conglomerates who were manufacturing and selling inhumane gases during the war, turned these toxic products towards pest and disease to continue the cash flow.

Initially, the people accepted these toxic sprays as a new way to control pest and disease, however, with the heavy overuse of these deadly sprays it didn’t take long for the pest and disease to become immune. So, we have a new problem on our hands — how do we control the pest and disease? At present, globally, we are in the midst of pest and disease and authorities don’t know how to handle it.

As a commercial grower, The Ministry of Agriculture had me on a weekly spray programme of two fungicides and three insecticides — saying prevention is better than cure. The more I sprayed the more I had to spray, so after eight years I changed my regime. At the time I was

Improving joint health (Part 1) The best part of what I do is to see improvements in those who have the courage to try something different.

My client files are full of testimonies of those who have improved. Just this morning a client I have been helping for four months called for her monthly check in. When I first spoke with her she had a very sore hip and various muscle aches and pains.

Dog joins stink bug fight

A bug-sniffing detector dog introduced by the Ministry for Primary Industries will help stop the potentially devastating brown marmorated stink bug from making a home in New Zealand.

Georgie, an MPI labrador, demonstrated her sniffing skills on stage recently by locating dead stink bugs hidden in a harvesting machine at the New Zealand Winegrowers conference in Blenheim.

MPI will have two trained dogs ready to sniff out stink bugs this summer, including a specialist dog to assist with detecting the pest in the event of an incursion,” says MPI border clearance director Steve Gilbert.

“While we do our best to prevent this unwanted pest coming into New Zealand in the first place, we need to be prepared if something slips through our border defences.

“Studies by the United States Department of Agriculture and our own trials show that dogs have huge potential to help detect stink bugs when they cluster in groups.”

Mr Gilbert says the stink bug dogs will also assist with biosecurity detection work at the border, including locating bugs on imported vehicles and machinery.

“Georgie is an experienced detector dog and picked up the new scent very quickly. This suggests it should be relatively easy to train other MPI dogs at short notice for stink bug detection work.”

The stink bug season will start on September 1. Mr Gilbert says MPI will again be stepping up its efforts over the spring and summer months to stop the brown marmorated stink bug from reaching New Zealand.

“This will include carrying out increased inspections of vessels and goods from the United States and countries in Europe where the bug is established.”

Brown marmorated stink bug would have a serious impact on New Zealand’s horticultural industries if it became established, he says.

“Preventing a stink bug invasion is one of MPI’s highest biosecurity priorities.”

Garden festival When gardeners are not working in their own garden they love to look at other people’s gardens.

There are many annual festivals in New Zealand to feed this interest — among them the Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival, now in its 13th year.

Cottage gardens, native gardens, highly structured or rambling and informal, whatever your taste in gardens there is something for everyone. Promoted as ‘Real Gardens for Real People’ visitors can get ideas, ask questions and get advice from the owners.

Among the 64 gardens and places of interest for visitors to see there are 13 new private gardens — two returning after a break and five public gardens entered.

The new entries are spread around the region in Stratford, Inglewood, New Plymouth, Waitara and Okato.

It is good to have fresh gardens and

ideas for the regular festival visitors but they also like to revisit gardens they have seen in past years to see what changes have been made and how the plants have grown.

The festival runs from Friday October 27 to Sunday November 5. There is no need to buy tickets or book, just turn up at the gate with $2 per person.

More Mycoplasma bovis finds

Federated Farmers is disappointed, but not surprised, to learn of three new finds of stock with Mycoplasma bovis.

The affected properties confirmed by the Ministry for Primary Industries recently are all linked to Van Leeuwen Group farms where the cattle disease was first identified.

“This latest identification is obviously disappointing but it was anticipated as the animals were traced back to the origin of the initial outbreak,” says Federated Farmers biosecurity spokesperson Guy Wigley.

“It’s important to keep things in perspective and not unnecessarily increase anxiety levels amongst farmers. The reality is it exists in most countries and they manage it just fine with trade unaffected.

“We know the frustration out there, but this is a complex bacterial infection which we have never encountered before here in New Zealand.”

Mr Wigley says MPI was throwing significant resources at containing the disease and was remaining positive that it could be eradicated.

“From what I understand testing is rigorous, with the MPI animal health laboratory expecting to test more than 39,000 samples in an extensive surveillance programme over the next three months.”

Feds is supporting MPI’s efforts to communicate with farmers, providing information via fact sheets, websites

and public meetings. “Affected farmers are being informed on a regular basis about sample results. The fact is, it’s going to take several months to ascertain a definitive result.”

Feds has heard talk among farmers who are bothered by MPI’s inability to identify affected properties, because of the Privacy Act. “Apart from the obligations under the law, this is not the time to incriminate other farmers who may be in a stressful state,” says Mr Wigley.

“MPI is doing what it is obligated to do, and that is to acknowledge the privacy rights of those farmers who have bovis identified in their herds.

It’s not a question of secrecy — it’s about protecting individual farmers and their businesses from unwelcome and unhelpful publicity.

“We all need to stay together if we are to tackle this nasty cattle disease — that way we have a chance to eliminate it.

“The industry as a whole is working with MPI and farmers themselves can do their bit, by practising best farm biosecurity measures through good hygiene and cleaning equipment and making sure you maintain separation between neighbouring herds.”

Water is a first consideration When considering cropping options, the irrigation of the property and the type of water delivery system used needs to be a priority at the top of anyone’s list.

There are various types of pressurised systems available that have high capital and operating costs but may utilise minimal labour and conserve water. A variety of other systems are relatively less expensive to construct and operate but these may have high labour requirements.

It is advisable to research the costs of maintenance and expected life along with an array of annual costs like energy, water, depreciation, land preparation, maintenance and labour.

Once the water equation is taken care of, ensure there is a plan for the care and maintenance of the land itself.

There is a growing trend with crop farmers moving more toward sustainable crop production which steers them away from the use of commercial pesticides.

Several alternative measures are available including ‘integrated pest management’ — to protect crops from insects and weeds. IPM includes monitoring and identifying pests before they become a threat.

Using plants in ‘companion planting’ that are natural insect repellants means commercial pesticides only need to be used sparingly when other methods fail. For intercropping place plants

close together to reduce the available area for weeds to take hold. This also encourages plant diversity to avoid insect and pest infestation.

Companion planting uses plants that are natural pest repellants such as marigolds and other plants that are more attractive to pests than the primary crop. Other plants are used to attract beneficial insects to the crop.

Mulching controls weed growth — with minerals replacing the home garden ‘newspaper’ mat. Ground cover plants are grown below the main crop to combat weeds.

Organic fertilisers increase soil biodiversity and have been shown to increase the uptake of nutrients by plants. There is also evidence that use of organic fertilisers improves the nutrient value of the plants themselves.

Intercropping, crop rotation, and mulching are sustainable crop production methods that help replenish and improve the soil by introducing plants that pull nitrogen from the air and release it into the soil or plants that can be turned under after their growing season to add additional nutrients.

Crop rotation also increases yields,

while monocropping has been implicated in declines in crop yield and loss of nutrients from the soil. Rotating crops allows soil to ‘rest’ and replenish vital

micronutrients, microbes, and other important components, ultimately ensuring stock have good quality nutritious food.

Balancing pasture Maintaining a good balance between managing pasture and the cattle to maximise sustainable profit is an important part of pasture-based dairy farming. Optimising future pasture production through grazing management and quality helps with milk solids production and reproductive performance.

Pasture intake is generally affected by the quality and quantity of the available pasture offered daily and the tools of grazing management include frequency and intensity of grazing.

Pasture production and quality are mainly affected by the amount of pasture and grazing intensity.

Information from DairyNZ says pasture and herd performance are optimised by having sufficient quality feed on an annual basis to meet cow demand and by allocating this feed.

Control the area that is grazed each day to help manipulate the pasture that is eaten to meet the average cover targets for the farm. Estimate the area and pre-grazing cover required for the cows based on the target grazing residual, and adjust after observing if the cows achieve a ‘consistent, even, grazing height’. It is good to treat pasture as a crop and remove that which

Distribute pasture cover between paddocks in a feed wedge to ensure that high quality feed is offered on all paddocks. Over the season the height of post-grazing residuals does not change but the dry matter mass does increase.

The decisions about grazing frequency are often a result of farmer preference due to specific farm characteristics, for example even/uneven paddock sizes,

shape of the farm, soil types, and labour availability.

The number of times fresh pasture is offered within a day does not affect dry matter intake or milk production and grazing frequency does not affect grazing time, rumination time or resting time of cows.

As growth is influenced by a range of factors. There is no research evidence that the frequency of grazing — 12 versus 24 hours — affects pasture growth.

It is much more important to maintain appropriate residuals of 1,500-1,600 kilograms DM/ha.

Pastures need help Sodden pastures could become a major feed issue for many lower North Island farmers even after the rain stops and growing conditions improve.

According to agronomist Laura Akers, paddocks damaged by constant wet weather will not grow as much grass as normal during summer and autumn if they are not repaired.

“The good news is that there are recovery options available.

“The sooner farmers take stock of their situation and make a plan to restore paddocks affected by all the rain, the faster they will get back on track feed wise.”

Damage has been widespread and unavoidable during the wettest season many farmers have ever experienced.

“In some cases it won’t be possible to fix everything up straight away; the key will be to work out what can be repaired in the short term and what your feed needs are for the rest of the season so you can get organised and be ready to act as soon as conditions improve.”

Laura says the main concern is filling the gaps left after pugging or treading damage before pastures become overrun with weeds and/or unproductive grasses like poa annua. Remaining

ryegrass will not fill those gaps, because ryegrass is not a spreading plant. Repair options vary, depending on how badly each paddock has been damaged, so it’s important to prioritise them according to their condition. Where whole paddocks have been severely pugged, the best option is to consider full pasture renewal, either through a summer crop like 501 Chicory, or, in summer wet/irrigated areas, through grass to grass.

On farms with several distinct areas of damage, she encourages farmers to mark all of these areas on a farm map and get a contractor to under sow them with Shogun hybrid ryegrass as soon as soil temperatures rise above eight degrees C. “Shogun has the real advantage of establishing quickly at cooler temperatures, because it is winter active. That combined with its high dry matter yield make it very valuable for undersowing in these conditions.”

To fix small patches of damage, she recommends farmers oversow ryegrass and clover seed, to keep weeds at bay.

Soil temperatures need to be above 10 degrees C for this to be successful.

Another potential issue caused by continual wet weather is that many farmers have not been able to graze paddocks down to correct residuals during spring, she says. “This will reduce future pasture quality and growth if it continues.

The best thing to do now is to try and make a conscious effort to get on top of this in the second grazing round, to set pastures up well for the rest of the season.”

Bruce, and son Patrick, operate a Lincoln ram stud and commercial flock of 2,000 purebred Lincoln ewes in conjunction with a beef finishing operation running 1,000/1,500 bulls in Central Hawkes Bay. Their Makaroro Road property, in the lee of the Ruahine Ranges covers some 1,900 acres, is 5kms long, 3kms wide with undulating hills and flat pasture.

Elderly, native totaras dot the hilly pasture which at its summit, is 1036 feet (315 metres) gives 360 degree views of a verdant, seemingly unpopulated Central Hawke’s Bay. “We’ve been selecting our Lincoln Ram stud sires and the females we put into the stud flock for their tolerance to worms over the last 40 years.”

Primary focus is wool production, and its heritability in the flock of the purchaser.

As breeders, the last three decades have been successful because of the demand for lustrous wool, mohair blends and the hand knotted rug market. Bruce concentrated on wool, breeds and selects for it. Lincoln’s were the first English long wool breed to become

More recently they have been used as a first crossing sire to lift wool production in the flock of the purchaser by around 20%.

“All our wool is sold at auction with Segard Masurel having first refusal on every kilo they clip. The company has bought the bulk of the Lincoln “Kowhai” clip for over 40 years. The wool is often supplied for a process that blends the wool with mohair.

launched by Prince Charles earlier this year will promote the benefits of wool and see increased demand. The campaign, which Bruce describes as “a breath of fresh air” is a great opportunity for wool growers to consolidate, unite and support the project.

As for the future Bruce and Pat are still experimenting but are rather tight lipped. All Bruce will say is that his latest project involves lustrous wool and another labour saving trait.

Tax on water?

That’s got to be the scariest thing any farmer has heard this week.

There has been a lot of discussion about these three words during the week, including ownership of it. One spokesperson has estimated consented water users would contribute around two billion dollars. Now the talk is that half will go to iwi and the other half will go towards fixing our polluted rivers and streams.

What an irresponsible shambles.

Then I remember — there is an election in six weeks.

I think this has got a lot more to do with election vote grabbing than actually looking after rivers and streams. Maybe more about getting townie votes at the expense of farmers being whipped with another stick.

A wild stab, which is all anyone is doing, is that only a quarter of that will be used for what it is intended.

There is no longer any dispute that there is a problem with our rivers and streams and now the focus is on fixing the problem. After studying the process put in place to mitigate these problems

and where the farming industry is focussing their efforts, good progress is being made. River and stream fencing, riparian planting on water edges and nutrient budgeting are among these.

A disturbing fact which has never been mentioned by media amongst all this noise is the cause of this pollution in our waterways.

Where did all this begin?

In March this year, after the release of the Waikato Healthy Rivers Plan, my column was entitled ‘Don’t blame the Farmers’. I still stand by that comment.

The cause of excess phosphate and excess nitrate in our rivers is common sense yet it has never been mentioned.

Farmers get all their fertiliser and nutrient advice from consultants who are appointed by the companies who sell the fertiliser.

Despite the pressure on farmers to clean up their act, these major NPK fertiliser companies are still piling on more phosphate and unstable nitrogen than the soil can handle.

Old outdated soil and fertiliser practises are keeping these farms in a primitive state reducing the soil’s ability to hold on to nutrients and water efficiently. It’s time that the experts charged with the responsibility of our clean rivers’ future began addressing this issue and challenge these major fertiliser companies. This action alone will immediately mitigate the primary cause of our problems.

This direct action alone will make more progress than two to five years of taxes, collecting vast amounts of money to be wasted on beaurocrats to discover what we already know.

Irrigation Matters with Clem Powell The mystery of engine driven pumps There is nothing new about engine driven pumps. One has only to visit the local A&P show to see various pumps driven by steam, petrol or diesel engines.

Most of these pumps will be piston type for delivery of home or stock water and often require a lot of TLC not to mention strong arms for starting. This should not be a deterrent as technology has moved on.

Steam admittedly is almost unknown for irrigation pumping due to special skills and equipment.

Petrol, except in very small systems is not favoured due to fuel costs and also lower BTU (British Thermal Units) which is how the energy in a fuel is measured. Diesel comes up on top in both these cases.

Diesel really is best even for a small system.

Take it from a motor mechanic that the extra spent on a diesel unit will more than pay off in the constant slog of irrigation pumping.

Electricity certainly is favoured by many but also consider standing line charges and any diminishing of supply to other appliances such as a milking shed. The upgrade of a transformer and extra supply line may well make your eyes water.

So, what to buy? Quality Irrigation companies will have access to correctly specified units and we welcome enquiries as a large part of our business at Irri-Max Ltd is in diesel pump units.

Generally, buying something from a clearance sale or Trademe will not be the best option. In the first instance can you be sure the pump has been used

for exactly the same duty as you intend.

Did the original owner spec it correctly?

Sellers on many websites often do not know what they are offering.

The best they can say about their pump is they are supposed to have max flow of “X” and max pressure of “Y”.

Pumps have a best efficiency point, normally at 2/3 max flow and this is the point a pump technician will try to achieve, balanced with available power and speed from the diesel engine.

As you can already appreciate, there are multiple options which make it more than a little tricky for the layman to get it right.

Direct drive is preferable rather than belt due to difficulty with belt alignment and even tensioning, along with safety.

Electric start is a must even on the small units as irrigation units have a tendency to run shy of fuel.

Bleeding is much easier with electric start. Which brings me to the next issue; control Panels!

When it comes to modern utes, many buyers entering the market feel they have a choice between two top contenders. There’s the Ford Ranger, riding high on years of awards and sales figures, and the Toyota Hilux, the once-all-powerful monarch of the rural roads, still slugging in a close second place.
