End of an era Fonterra is taking a new approach to how it provides nutrition to communities, to better reach those most in need across New Zealand with the Milk in Schools programme ending soon.

“As a New Zealand farmerowned co-op, with employees spread right across regional New Zealand, Fonterra is part of many communities,” says CEO Miles Hurrell.

“We have taken a good look at what the country is facing, particularly in the context of Covid-19, and asked if our current way of doing things is supporting the people who need it most.

“We can see there is a need for us to expand our thinking and take a more holistic approach that reaches more people — which is why we are making these changes.”

Fonterra will help grow KickStart Breakfast alongside partners Sanitarium and the Ministry of Social Development.

Predicted veggie price increase concerning

Horticulture New Zealand is concerned predicted increases of up to 58% could price vegetables off the table, resulting in preventable and costly strains on the health system of up to $610 million.

“Our concern is the strain on the health system if vegetables get priced off the average family’s table and New Zealanders’ health declines,” said HortNZ deputy chief executive, Leanne Stewart, in response to news that the Labour Party is promising an investigation into grocery prices if elected.

“Land use regulation also needs to be looked at, in addition to grocery prices.

“Otago University has researched the health consequences of the increase in prices predicted by an earlier Deloitte study of vegetable growing in Pukekohe.

Otago University estimates that the cost to the health system of vegetable price increases and subsequent decreases in vegetable consumption could be between $490 million and $610 million.”

The vegetable price increase estimated by Deloitte is due to challenges, such as urban encroachment and freshwater regulation, which prevent new vegetables growing. The decrease in vegetable production is estimated to correspond to price increases of between 43% and 58% for vegetables.

Ms Stewart said it would be better to ensure that vegetable growing in New Zealand can keep up with a growing

population and people’s desire to eat more healthily.

“To reverse the decline in vegetable growing, central and regional government needs to act as one.

“Government and councils need to ensure that urban growth does not encroach on productive land, but where it does, that vegetable growers can move elsewhere — without costly and unnecessary red tape. Vegetable growers also need to expand to keep up with population growth.”

She said today’s vegetable growers are sophisticated business people and proud environmental stewards.

“They are engaged in research, adopting new techniques and implementing audited far m environment plans so they can maximise crop production while minimising environmental impact.

Growers are improving their systems because it makes economic as well as environmental sense.”

Recognition of important growing areas in the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management is encouraging for growers.

“Growers know the food they produce is essential for human health. They just

BY DENISE GUNN Rukumoana Farms, a fifth-generation property, east of Eltham, is in the running for the national Gordon Stephenson Trophy.

T

he 1,263ha (1,159ha-effective) medium to steep hill country farm is currently run by Robert and Jane Brown, their sons, Nicholas, William and Sam, and daughter-in-laws Sophie and Kate. Their long-term commitment to environmental stewardship earned them the top spot at this year’s Taranaki Ballance Farm Environment Awards (BFEA).

Robert and Jane Brown moved onto the original 365ha Mangamingi farm after their marriage in 1985, farming alongside Robert’s parents, Peter and Nola. Peter was one of five boys growing on the family farm, run by his parents, Percy and Hope, in the Mangamingi Valley.

During the past 35 years, Robert and Jane have added to the original family farm, buying several surrounding blocks. Rukumoana Farms now includes properties at Mangamingi, Rawhiti and Huinga.

“Since 2015, Nicholas and Sophie have been living at the Toko farm, managing this block,” said Jane.

“William and Kate are managing the Mangamingi block with Robert and me.”

Two years ago, Robert and Jane bought a direct drill contracting business, which is managed by their youngest son, Sam. Jane said this had given them flexibility with the seasonal drilling of crops and new grass, minimising disturbance of the soil and supporting the lamb

fattening operation. Rukumoana Farms runs a flock of 5,000 Wairere Romney ewes and 1,500 hoggets.

“We fatten all the lambs produced and mate the hoggets that have reached a live weight of 40kg. We have docked between 140% and 145% for the last five years and our average cull weight for lambs is 18kgCW.” For the past nine years, the family has focussed on breeding facial eczema tolerance into their flock, using Wairere genetics.

Jane said although this hasn’t yet reached the gold standard, they are happy with the direction it’s heading.

A mixture of 700 cattle, including R2 steers, and R1 and R2 bulls, are wintered on the farms.

“We usually purchase R2 400kgLW steers and bulls year-round, and sell them at 300kgCW-plus, turning over 550 a year. We are adjusting the cattle systems to more Friesian bulls, and an area of 20ha of Technosystem has been set up at the Toko farm. The Technosystem will focus on R2 bulls for the winter until December, and then possibly steers or more bulls over the summer months.”

The Brown family is careful to match the stock class with the environment and enjoy the flexibility of the trading system.

All lambs and cattle are processed by Silver Fern Farms.

The farms receive a reliable, annual rainfall of about 1,800ml but dry autumns with warm, humid conditions are common. Heavy fogs, rolling in from nearby Lake Rotorangi, are enough to stimulate facial eczema spores on the

“We often see a worm burden rise late March/April after a dry January and February, and sometimes fly can become prevalent again late March.

Animal health can be a busy part of the workload over these months, depending on the season.”

Some supplementary feed, a minimum of 400 small squares of hay, and about 70–100 size-12 silage bales, is grown. Close to 50ha of seasonal summer crops are directly drilled each year. New grasses are then direct-drilled in autumn.

“We usually manage to keep the system all grass-fed without too much

supplementary feed during the winter,” said Jane.

A land environment plan, with the Taranaki Regional Council, highlights the different classes of land and landuse capabilities.

For the past 20 years, the family has planted poplar trees to prevent erosion and provide shade for stock. Several sectors of wetlands have been retired and riparian planted, and some natural reversion areas are now fenced off.

Land classed as marginal for stock is either retired or planted with natives or pines.

The farm’s Rawhitiroa block, adjacent to the predator-free Rotokare Scenic Reserve, is in the Rotokare Halo project and trapped for pests.

“We are in the Taranaki Regional Council’s self-help possum control programme on the 96ha block, and our Savage block at the Toko farm.”

Fertiliser is applied aerially on the hills and by bulk truck on the flats each year.

Farm IQ software helps map fertiliser applications, cropping programme and record stock movements. That generates sound information to plan for the coming season and stock rotations.

Robert and Jane have started a succession process with their family.

“We feel this will be very exciting, enabling the future generations opportunity to reach their goals.”

A BFEA field day is planned at Rukumoana Farms on Wednesday, November 11.

he property was initially developed by the late Ian Parsons, who operated the farm as an Angus bull stud. He also bred thoroughbreds as a hobby, successfully breeding New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year, Sweet Offer, and well-performed entire, Silver Bounty. In the late 1970s, Irish breeder Captain Tim Rogers searched

John’s interest in racing developed from a young age, and on leaving school, he worked on stud farms in New Zealand and the United States. Following big winnings at a Cromwell race meeting, John bought foundation sire, War Hawk II and leased a property near Gore. War Hawk II was very successful, and after John and Anne relocated him to their Wanganui property, he became a champion New Zealand sire in 1981.

Grangewilliam Stud is now in the hands of the next generation of the Corcoran family with son Mark and his

wife Jane, and their children Annabel (15) and Toby (13).

Mark said the stud’s aim is to produce quality racehorses, provide competitively priced stallion options and broodmare services for their clients.

There are currently four stallions, The Bold One, Zed, Derryn and Wyndspelle standing at Grangewilliam Stud.

The first crop of foals sired by Derryn, an impeccably-bred Group One performed Australian-imported sprinter, are now yearlings. Derryn is by Hinchinbrook and out of Lonhro mare, Munhro.

Eight-time New Zealand and Australian Group One performer, Wyndspelle, is the latest addition to the stallion lineup. Wyndspelle won the WRC Captain Cook Stakes.

“We have the best potential line-up of stallions Grangewilliam Stud has ever had. I plan to keep improving our broodmare band gradually and supporting our young stallions to ensure they get the best possible chance of succeeding at stud.”

The Corcoran family has produced many top horses during the years.

“Breeding and raising 1995 Caulfield and Melbourne Cups double winner, Doriemus, was a huge highlight,” said Mark.

Multi-champion race mare, Winx, also has connections to Grangewilliam Stud. Her dam’s sire, Al Akbar, stood at the stud.

Around 45 mares are farmed on the property, along with a number of permanent boarders.

Outside mares are also sent to visit the stallions during the breeding season.

“We can serve around 200 mares in a season, with about half of those already carrying a foal. The mares arrive a few weeks before foaling. We foal them down and get them back in foal as soon as possible.”

Mares are sent home again following a six-week positive scan.

“The best foals are selected to be sold at the Karaka Yearling Sales. The lesser types are sold as weanlings, either at the national weanling sale or through the online auction platform Gavelhouse.”

A large amount of work, preparation, handling and education goes into each yearling. Foals are hard-fed each day from late summer, prior to weaning, until they are sold as yearlings the following year. Joints are X-rayed, and their larynx is scoped for the buyers and their vet to scrutinise at the sales.

“Good-quality land and pasture plays a big part in producing quality, sound racehorses,” said Mark.

“Racing is a fashion industry and thoroughbred studs need to keep moving with new fashions, and keep their bloodlines exciting and appealing.

We have been at the lower end of the stallion market, but the aim is to produce a commercially sought after sire by achieving standout performances on the racetrack and moving up to the next level. I believe that we have some real firepower in our current stallion ranks to be able to achieve this vision.”

INDOOR SHEEP DOG TRIALS PROVE POPULAR

Since its inaugural competition in 2008, the Taranaki Indoor Sheep Dog Trial Show Ring Championships have gained recognition as a premium event on the North Island circuit.

A

small group of enthusiastic volunteers, led by Graeme Northcott, started the annual event after discussing the possibility of holding indoor trials. Jane Davie of Purfur Limited came on board as the event’s first major sponsor. In 2014 the Mighty Mix Dog Food franchise took over.

“Graeme had the vision, and we all shared his passion,” said club secretary Brenda O’Leary.

“He was also responsible for getting Country TV to film the final run-offs in 2016, 2017 and 2018, and for Seven Sharp to do a feature in 2018. It was wonderful publicity for our sport and a first for a show trial.”

The trials are held in the TSB indoor arena at the Egmont A&P Showgrounds.

As the competition is always held over the first weekend in July, the venue is ideal for dog trials held during winter.

Brenda and her husband Keady supplied the sheep during the early years of the trials. Sandford Transport donated the cartage from Patea to Hawera. The Brewer brothers, who farm just out of Hawera and also run sheep at the showgrounds, took over supplying the sheep and continue to do this each year.

“We are very limited as to how many sheep we can have because they have to be held over at the Egmont Showgrounds and fed,” said Brenda.

She said all the sheep are reused for the competition, and extra sheep are on hand for the run-off of finalists.

With many of the dogs used to working on the farm and competing in hill trials, the indoor competition offers a different experience and challenge.

The 10-minute course time limit starts when a group of three sheep are released from a pen. As soon as the

sheep are through the first obstacle, known as the gap, judging begins.

Further obstacles include a Taranaki gate, a bridge, a Maltese cross, and a pen where the run is completed. Each section is worth an allocated amount of points with 100 in total. Points are deducted when faults occur in the run.

“Dog trial show ring events are all about controlled progress and straight lines. The least stops on the way around the better.”

Unfortunately, Covid-19 restrictions meant this year’s event was cancelled.

“As a club, our short-term goals are to continue holding this event,” said Brenda.

“The stadium has been booked for July 2021. We intend to maintain the

high standard we have set with this event. It is recognised as the premium sheep dog trial show ring event on the circuit, in the North Island. The continuing support of our sponsors from both within Taranaki, and outside the province, will be major players in helping this happen.”

In 2014, the club made its first donation of $1,500 to the St John New Zealand ambulance service. This support to St John has continued and also to the Taranaki Rescue Helicopter Trust, with both charities receiving donations each alternate year. In 2019 the rescue helicopter service received $3,000 from the club’s event.

“Our aim is to continue doing this,” said Brenda.

at this event,” said Brenda. The club’s aim for the competition is to foster in stockmen and women, and the wider community, a full understanding of the skills of handling working sheep dogs.

It also intends to foster goodwill and social interaction between members of the sheep dog trialling community and the general public.

Brenda said the club encourages novices and new people, regardless of gender, to the sport of sheep dog trialling.

A range of classes is scheduled for each event, covering novice, maiden, intermediate and open contestants.

There are also prizes for the top-pointing female competitor during the qualifying days, regardless of status, and top qualifying male competitor.

More than 300 sheep are required for the two qualifying days of the trial.

Top entertainment for A&P show Pirates will be plotting the course and setting sail during this year’s Egmont A&P Show’s opening day parade.

The pirate-themed parade, free to all entrants, will set off around the showgrounds on Friday, November 20 at 6pm, just half an hour after judging commences. A bounty of monetary prizes will be presented to the first four placegetters.

The gates open at noon that day with a variety of competitions, entertainment, displays, sideshows and rides lined up to entertain the crowds. Along with the usual sights and sounds of the Egmont A&P Show, the committee has organised a new show format and content.

Egmont A&P Association executive officer, Janet Morgan, said a new president has been elected to the committee.

“Don Newland from Silver Fern Farms is our new president. Don is well-known to most in Taranaki and has a long connection to the showgrounds.”

Two new members have also joined the executive committee.

“Alex Corrigan whose family has been involved with the show and showgrounds for generations. His grandfather, Ross Corrigan, is the patron and his father, Andrew Corrigan, is also a committee member. The other young person to join the executive committee is Georgina Maud who works for Osflow. A lot of the changes we’ve made to this year’s show are as a result of their input.”

Stage entertainment in front of the grandstand is set to delight people of all ages.

Around the back of the grandstand, the craft hall’s display of handiworks will captivate viewers with the elaborate details involved.

Small animals, based in the spacious TSB Indoor Arena, provide opportunities for visitors to view up close. Also located in the arena is the Spark KidZone and the alpacas.

As hunger strikes, taste buds are sure to be tempted by the aroma of foods dished up by the Food Truck Depot and can be enjoyed in the central seating area.

Over in The Menzshed, exhibitors encourage visitors to meet them and check out the array of projects they are working on.

Local schools will be showcasing their values and achievements in The School Yard, along with activities and fundraisers.

The gates reopen at 9am the following day. In addition to the previous day’s activities, sheep dog trials and woodchopping competitions are set to take place. The Rural Support Trust also has a line-up of speakers and entertainers, aimed particularly towards the farming community, in the Lunch Shack Cafe.

Janet said the committee is very excited about the show’s new format and content.

Leading scientist shifts climate parameters

Farmers and rural contractors economically threatened by laws based on methane and its role in climate change have a new reason for hope, as a leading climate scientist makes calls to downgrade the threat level of this commonly occurring gas. The implications for carbon taxation are enormous.

With debate already raging over the balance between reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the necessity for a robust rural economy, the recalculation of the impact of methane on the climate by one of the leading scientists in the field has provided rhetorical ammunition for the pro-agriculture lobby. Spokesperson for Kiwi agricultural science advocacy group, Facts About Ruminant Methane (FARM), Robin Grieve, says that it is ‘almost unbelievable’ that one of the leading methane scientists in the world, Dr Myles Allen, has adjusted the calculation of methane harm from 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide (CO2) to a mere seven times.

Dr Allen is no climate change denier, and neither is he a poorly informed secondary source. The respected doctor is head of the Climate Dynamics group at the University of Oxford’s Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics Department.

He leads the world in computer simulation modelling of climate change and has won many scientific awards for his work. Now, FARM reports that he’s

insisting that the European Union drop the official figure of ‘28 times more potent than CO2’ and accept the new calculation he backs.

The implications for Kiwi lawmakers are just as vast, and in an election year, even more, pressing.

“That is critical information to New Zealand, where the government and even farming industry groups have accepted the notion that methane is 28 times stronger than CO2,” says Robin Grieve.

“The potential cost to farmers to work with this concept was going to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Reducing the ratio by 400% shows just how wrong everyone has been. Yet they were willing to advise policymakers to put farming under huge pressure to conform.

Adopting Allen’s proposed system of accounting for methane will slash 26,000 tonnes off New Zealand’s carbon emissions overnight — approximately a 32% reduction.”

The annual roll-out of new models doesn’t mean much for a lot of badges in the auto industry, who satisfy their customers with a bit of a facelift, some extra chrome and perhaps a slight bump in horsepower. Then, there are other machines in constant evolution, where there’s a lot more going on under the skin.

Roto Cut knives are automatically deactivated at the end of each bale and automatically cleaned after every fifth bale.

Blockages are easily cleared from the cab, with the push of a button, adding to another aspect Claas has not left to chance; operator comfort.

Claas has continued to impress with its bigger, more tech-heavy range of self-wrapping balers, but even the most basic variant of the Variant takes knowledge, which has won a swag of engineering awards, and uses it to make a day baling feed that little bit more efficient and comfortable.

A kiwi crop farmer is standing by his trusty machinery as the linchpin of his success, as he brings home a Guinness world record for massive arable land production.

Eric Watson, from Wakanui near Ashburton, has broken his own Guinness World Record for the highest average wheat yield of 17.398 tonnes a hectare.

Working with his wife Maxine, he set the previous record of 16.791 tonnes with feed wheat in 2017. Irrigated wheat yields in New Zealand average about 12 tonnes a hectare. He puts his success down to precision farming, with the right tools.

Eric defines ‘precision farming’ in New Zealand in many ways, particularly in his use of machinery and implement technology at the cutting edge. When asked how to win a world record, he’d answer that it comes from making small incremental gains across many facets of the farming business. One example; through a combination of operator control and advanced software, like Case IH’s AFS Harvest Command system, he leaves little to waste on the deep soils of his coastal property.

“That new automation; it’s quicker than the human. We always think we can beat computers, but you can’t beat that. The command system knows what to do before you even see it on the screen,” he says. However, it’s less driver-intensive than the machinery of

yesteryear. “It does work extremely well.

It just takes a bit of getting used to, and you get a bit bored because you don’t have to do much. You run auto settings, and you’ve just got to sit there.”

As a long-time Case IH customer, Eric says the red brand’s latest technology is a sizeable step ahead on one of his original machines, an old International 1460.

A favourite feature in his Case IH Axial-Flow 250 Series combine is the CVT rotor drive technology, which increases efficiency and reduces the chance of crop blockage. When you spend as much time in the seat as Eric,

it’s a pleasure not having to get out to unblock it. Eric enjoys a productivity gain, no matter where it comes from.

For his recent wheat record, he switched wheat variety and went from solid urea to liquid form to improve spreading.

He also swears by using a tracked unit to prevent soil compaction, knowing that soil health is another incremental gain area for maximum growth next cycle. Ever-modest, Eric quietly admits to being a bit blown away by his latest yield gain. “However, you’re always monitoring and trying a few new things, including a different crop as well.”

Ground-spraying services across Taranaki Agman Spraying Taranaki offers a range of ground-spraying and pest plant control services across the region.

Owner/operator Simon Patterson has more than 12 years experience behind him, initially following his father’s footsteps into the spraying industry.

This knowledge, combined with an agricultural engineering degree and Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Administration, laid a solid foundation for Simon to establish Agman Spraying Taranaki six years ago.

“I started off with a little ute doing gun-spraying, and now we operate five spray vehicles, which includes three utes, a truck and a tractor unit,” said Simon.

“We have three boom-sprayers offering widths of eight, 12 and 15 metres. We utilise up-to-date technology, featuring computerised rate controllers, GPS guidance and boom pilot for automatic section control to eliminate overspray and improve efficiency. This

all combines to ensure we offer an accurate and precise boom-spraying service for crops and pastures.”

“We do a lot of pest plant control work, such as cut and paste, drill and fill, or spraying.”

Cut and paste is a commonly-used method to control small to medium pest trees as well as vine control.

Drill and fill are used on larger, wellestablished trees.

As a Growsafe registered chemical applicator, Simon is qualified to apply agrichemicals from a motorised sprayer.

Health and safety play a vital part in the operation of the business with site hazard identification forms and emergency plans completed prior to each job.

“We supply agrichemicals at competitive pricing or do application only,” said Simon.

From the business’s base in Tikorangi, Simon and his team service Taranakiwide from Mokau to Waverley, covering all types of terrain.

If you do not farm in an FE prone area look out, the climate is warming, and eczema is creeping down the country.

Buying rams with FE tolerance could protect your flock in the future.

If you think you will never be threatened by FE, then it also makes sense to lift flock tolerance levels. You have a larger market when selling store.

Those farmers farming in an FE prone area will not buy lambs that do not have FE tolerance. You have more buyers.

Paparata FE tolerance building programme

In 1999, after some heavy sheep losses earlier in the decade when FE turned up in the King Country, Paparata decided to lift the FE tolerance levels of the Paparata ewe flock.

From 1999 all outside sires used over the recorded flock needed to have been FE tolerance tested at a high level.

In the same year, a testing programme was begun on the high-ranking homebred rams to check their tolerance levels.

Those rams showing the highest tolerance levels are used over the recorded flock.

The dose rate has moved up each year as the flock tolerance levels moved up although this took time.

I would like to point out — only tested rams are used over the recorded flock, and this has been the practice for the last 20 years.

We have tested at .5 this year, which is getting up there, given that the high tolerance breeders test at .5 and .6. It has taken 20 years to get Paparata up to this level.

Now, it looks like a decisive point has come down in solar’s favour, with building consents removed from ground-based solar arrays.

It may have a much larger impact in rural areas than in urban environments, and not just due to space constraints.

The new amendments to building rules, which came into effect at the beginning of September, make it clear that there are no consents required for groundbased, ie not mounted on a roof, solar arrays up to 20 square metres, or double this if the design and build is undertaken by a qualified professional.

However, that sized restriction is struck off for those building solar in rural areas.

To be fair, that’s also where the open space is there for the taking, in areas, perhaps, too steep for livestock which conveniently face north. Not that a single gigantic solar array may be needed for some of the most popular rural applications we’ve discovered for free, plentiful sunlight. Helping boost water heating systems in a cowshed is one of those with a growing track record of success, while another is gathering photovoltaic energy to help refrigeration systems do their job. There’s a nice

symmetry to this, as the hotter the sun gets, them or it helps cool the vats and ice banks.

One area where this new lack of building consent will make a big difference is in remote water pumping stations.

Far-flung bores and wells were once exclusively serviced by rattly old generators and pumps that required supervision, fuel and usually earplugs.

Substitute this approach for a solar unit which pumps when the sun shines and has panels no longer encumbered by consent costs, and it’s a definite win.

This is doubly true when combined with

another amendment to the building regulations, which allows ‘small pipe supporting structures’ and flexible water bladders up to 200,000 litres capacity to be installed with no building consent either.

For those who were on the fence as to whether solar adds up financially, this little extra cut to the cost of installation may be a push to act. For many, staring down the prospect of a long, hot summer again for 2021, the combination of savings suggested by solar pumps, pipes and flexible irrigation water storage will seem like some longoverdue common sense.

Migrant workers welcome DairyNZ warmly welcomes a government announcement that means some skilled migrant dairy farm employees will be able to return to New Zealand from overseas.

“This is a real breakthrough for migrants who meet the criteria and gives their farm employers certainty to plan for the future,” said DairyNZ chief executive Dr Tim Mackle.

“We thank the government for listening to the sector’s calls for these highly skilled people to return. They contribute to the dairy sector’s success, are invaluable for their experience and skills, and are important for training incoming Kiwi staff.”

The visa holders and their families will follow all border control processes and go into quarantine or managed isolation before rejoining their communities here.

DairyNZ has been working with the government since the beginning of the Covid-19 lockdown. The government did provide a six-month extension on the employer-assisted temporary work visas due to expire by the end of 2020, which was also very welcome news for dairy farmers.

Dr Mackle strongly advised migrants and their employers to understand the rules and confirm if they meet the

exemption criteria before submitting applications. “We don’t want to see additional stress, costs and disappointment for this group of patient people,” said Dr Mackle.

“While it is great news that some migrants can come home, DairyNZ acknowledges some migrants and their employers will not meet the criteria. I am sure they will be disappointed, and we thank them for the contribution they have made to our dairy sector.

“Jobs continue to remain in the dairy sector, and the GoDairy campaign launched by DairyNZ aims to attract Kiwis whose jobs were impacted by Covid-19. The challenge is it can’t happen with a flick of the switch.

“The sector needs a mixture of skills on-farm, both experienced people and new recruits.

“It will take several years to build the knowledge of new Kiwi farm staff to take over the migrant workforce.”

When it’s time to choose a quad bike for the farm, the emphasis is definitely on hard work. There’s a calculation to be made between how much the machine costs, how hardy it is in the field, and just what kind of jobs are expected of it.

Often, the mathematics of maintaining a good bottom line means that simpler tasks around the paddocks are achieved with the good old tried and true twowheeler; perhaps a ubiquitous farming machine like Kawasaki’s Stockman 250. At just a shade above $6,000 this represents good value for money in a package that’s versatile, nimble, easy for even novices to use, and stable in the mud and rough terrain we’re used to on Kiwi farms.

How about this, though. How about an upgrade for $787. That’s the price of

a budget overseas holiday, which we all know isn’t happening this year. However, for this small chunk of change, you can upgrade in the Kawasaki line-up from a 250cc two-wheeler to a full disc-braked, CVT transmission equipped four-wheeler packing 300cc and a bit more power.

There’s no need, right here, to go into the many little ways in which a quad bike is more utilitarian than a two-wheeler around the farm. Towing small trailers and carrying bigger loads is just the beginning. With many of you reading this right now committed to

Yamaha’s Brute Force 300 seems to make solid sense when it comes to getting more hard work for your dollar

quad ownership, we’d be preaching to the choir in a major way. It’s just that usually, the price gap between a small, functional two-wheel farm bike and a mid-sized quad is a bit wider. That’s why the Kawasaki Brute Force 300 looks so good as a proposition for those who need a general-purpose quad but don’t want to spend the earth.

If you don’t really need massive horsepower, a high top speed and lots of creature comforts like heated seats and grips, extra boxes, bags and racks,

or futuristic styling, this no-nonsense machine is more than adequate. It may not boast true four-wheel-drive, but neither does a regular farm bike. If your paddocks are relatively flat that’s not an issue.

If you want to drive a bit further, carry a bit more, work a bit harder, get a bit more done, then $787 (it’s the difference between the RRPs of the Stockman and the Brute Force 300) seems like a small price to pay. It’s definitely a sum worth thinking about for the new season.

Sir William (Bill) Hamilton spent a lifetime ahead of the curve, pushing the limits of what brains, courage and creativity could achieve. From his early years in farming, through to big wins as an auto racer, to the invention that would make his name and change boating forever, this was a man for whom sitting still was not an option.

Bill left school to manage a station in the South Island and had bought his own land at Irishman Creek, Otago, by the time he was 22. The shallow, braided rivers and deep gorges of this landscape made an impression on the young inventor, who turned the idea of a boat which could master such waters over in his mind, like a stream smoothing down a greenstone boulder. In the meantime his active intellect set to crafting other advancements for Irishman Creek Station; his own hydroelectric dam for starters, then an even larger one, built with an earthmoving machine of his own design.

During these years Bill had also been keen on motor racing, an area where technology had leapt forward thanks to the development of better engines during the first world war. He bought a Sunbeam race car while holidaying in Britain, then returned to blitz the field in the 50 miles long New Zealand Motor Cup of 1925. Bill broke the Australasian land speed record twice in his career, was the first person in Australia or New Zealand to break the 100-mile an hour barrier, and even went on to race a Bentley special at Brooklands during the ‘golden era’ of that famous track.

The inventions kept coming, in fields as varied as air conditioning, agriculture

and excavation. Still, the best was yet to come. In 1951 that old idea of a boat to conquer the shallows and curves of his local rivers resurfaced. By 1954 he’d struck on a novel concept. A centrifugal pump fitted to a small plywood craft with a Ford engine, creating the first-ever jet boat. Engineer George Davidson got on board and helped refine the jet into a more powerful and efficient form. From

here on, it was time to tame the rivers of the world. From Bill and his wife Peggy’s first trip up the Colorado River where it winds through the Grand Canyon, the Hamilton Jet was a success. Bill’s son Jon returned to complete the conquest of the Colorado in 1960, and thereafter the big names fell like dominoes; the Zaire, Ganges, Amazon and many more. It’s fair to say that Bill’s jet
