The winners were announced at the New Zealand River Awards ceremony, organised by the New Zealand Rivers Trust and the Morgan Foundation.

Maketawa Stream also took out the award for the most improved river in Taranaki.

The awards, which began in 2013, are designed to encourage regional councils and communities to work together with the goal of improving the health of rivers in their regions. Water quality is recorded at over 600 regional council monitoring sites on many waterways throughout New Zealand. A panel of scientists use this long-term data, held on the Land, Air, Water, Aoteroa (LAWA) website, to evaluate the entrants. The top three waterways receive national awards and the most improved river in each region is also recognised.

This year’s focus acknowledged improvements to the ecological health of waterways which are an indication of water quality. Monitoring the macroinvertebrate community index (MCI) is a valuable indicator of

Maketawa Stream is one of New Zealand’s most improved rivers

general river health and the Maketawa Stream showed a trend improvement of 2.5 percent in the MCI over the past 10 years.

“The Maketawa Stream represents the general improvement in Taranaki’s freshwater over the past two decades,” said Taranaki Regional Council director — environmental quality, Gary Bedford.

“Council monitoring for the past 20 years shows ecological health is either significantly improving (39 per cent of sites) or not showing any significant change (61 per cent) at all 57 sites monitored on 25 waterways across the region.”

Maketawa Stream’s monitoring site is well down from Egmont National Park and the surrounding land use is predominantly dairying.

It cuts a deep path through the land, leaving tall, steep banks in places that in some stretches have acted as natural stock barriers.

Close to 88 per cent of the stream with adjoining farmland has been fenced, and 75 per cent has been planted. There are no water takes from Maketawa Stream, and while a very small number of farmers still discharge treated dairy shed wastewater into it, the number doing so has declined over the past decade, helping to raise the MCI.

Chairman re-elected for fourth term

David MacLeod has been re-elected unopposed for a fourth term as Taranaki Regional Council chairman.

Mr MacLeod was first elected to the council in 2000, becoming chairman in 2007 and representing the South Taranaki constituency.

“I’m grateful for and honoured by the support of my fellow councillors and I look forward to a productive three years’ work together as a team’” he said.

“The community and the council have been making good progress towards our goal of a thriving and prosperous Taranaki. But we’re in challenging times with commodity price fluctuations.

“We need to stay strongly focussed on working efficiently and effectively as a council while continuing to deliver comprehensive work programmes that enable us to make further progress with environmental improvements, transport planning and services, hazard mitigation and preparedness, and the development of iconic amenities including Pukeiti and Yarrow Stadium.”

He said the central government is a key partner in many of the council’s activities, but the council’s close contact with the community ensures the most effective and efficient delivery of programmes. Some of the Taranaki

Regional Council’s priorities over the next three years include continuing to work with farmers to largely complete fencing and planting of ring plain rivers and streams by the end of the decade. This is believed to be the largest enhancement planting project on private land in New Zealand.

There are also plans to continue working with landowners to protect and enhance special habitats under the council’s Key Native Ecosystem (KNE) programme. Since 2006 the council has identified areas, collectively known as KNEs with significant, indigenous biodiversity values for the region.

Refining consent requirements to further increase freshwater quality will take precedence as well.

David Lean was elected unopposed for his fourth term as deputy chairman.

The family’s farming partnership also run 1,800 Perendales and 110 Simmental cattle on their two adjoining land blocks, Tirohanga and Mangaiti, covering a total of 1602 hectares (400ha effective). After working in the telecommunications industry for

23 years, Kerry and Julie returned to the farm with their young family in 2002.

The couple take care of the general farm work with contractors used for shearing, fencing, cropping, weed control, track maintenance and other activities as required. Brian and Olive retired from the farming partnership in 2015 but Brian is still actively involved in the day-

Mangaiti Merinos are dual-purpose bred with good lambing characteristics considered just as important as wool to-day work. Kerry said since signing the Whole Farm Plan with Horizons Regional Council, pine trees have been planted on the farm’s steeper slopes, with most of the Mangaiti Block planted.

Money from this project has been reinvested in the purchase of additional easy country from a neighbouring property. This means that the farm is now a predominantly flat and easy hill farm rather than one that is mainly hard, hill country.

Mangaiti Merino Stud was formed following the purchase of stud ewes and rams from the Rotoma dispersal sale in 1995. Since then, Merino numbers have been built up through natural increase and replacement rams bred.

“While we have sold some rams, our main focus has been on enhancing our flock to improve the overall quality of the wool that we can grow in our conditions,” said Kerry.

Renowned Merino sheep classer Gordon McMaster has given the

Thompson family expert support in this area since 2003.

Introducing Australian and South African genetics to their Mangaiti Merino flock has seen the animals increase in size and fertility.

Although the local climate is wetter, with an average annual rainfall of 1,250mm, and experiences higher humidity than the South Island, there hasn’t been any sign of footrot in the Mangaiti flock.

The Thompson’s put this down to the farm’s volcanic soils and careful choice of genetic strain. Parasites are managed through working closely with Wanganui Vet Services. Brian and Kerry found that to shed water effectively, they needed to breed sheep with fleeces less than 20 microns.

“With our relatively high annual rainfall we find that fleeces that let water in have an unacceptable level of colour.”

Kerry said the Merinos are run for their fine wool clip and the Perendales

for fat lambs, sold both direct to the works and store. The Merinos are shorn from May to July and the wool sold through New Zealand Merino — a farmer-owned company that specialises in the marketing of Merino wool and other Merino products. About one third of the fleece wool is sold on contract to Icebreaker and the balance is sold via auction in Melbourne. The farm is certified as part of New Zealand Merino’s ZQ Fibre programme.

Kerry said running Merinos works well financially for the farming partnership.

“It spreads our income through the year as we get paid for Merino wool and meat at different times of the year to when income from the Perendales comes in.”

Simmental cattle provide further diversification with income from weaner steers and dry cows.

“However, cattle are mainly run as a tool for managing pasture quality.”

In the last 18 months, Kerry and Julie have become actively involved with the Merino benchmarking group as they seek to improve the performance of their Merinos. This has already begun to show benefits and is leading to an active review of the future of the stud operation.

“Advances being made by the Production Science team in New Zealand Merino, and the development of Estimate Breeding Values by South Island studs mean that we either need to put the money into doing this ourselves, or we need to move to buying in rams from these studs.”

After immigrating to New Zealand from Switzerland, Christof and Christine Frey bought their own patch of paradise in Taranaki.

n the 15 years since purchasing their 50 acre farm near Okato, the couple have worked hard to develop the property. Growing food on a large scale was at the top of the list and their rural backgrounds in Switzerland equipped them with the required skills and knowledge to transform their land into an edible oasis.

Christine said they use organic principles but are too diverse to make organic certification a viable option.

“We do follow organic and permaculture guidelines.”

After moving onto the property and researching options, the couple found the soil was ideal for growing berries.

Initial plans were laid out to plant a blueberry orchard. Around that time, an acquaintance was selling his mature blueberry bushes as the lease on his property was drawing to a close.

The Frey’s bought the established blueberry bushes and replanted them on their land.

“All our waking hours are consumed with the luscious blueberries,” said Christine.

Gooseberries, currants and a selection of citrus, stone and pip fruits followed.

With close to 2,000 berry bushes and 350 fruit trees, the Frey’s aim is to grow fresh produce all-year-round and plant accordingly.

“We have been planting fruit trees every winter since we moved onto the property in 2001. Four years ago, I bought 100 dwarf apple rootstocks and over the next two winters I collected scion wood from old orchards or by swapping with other green-growers, and grafted the trees. ” said Christine.

“I now have about 60 varieties of apples growing. Last summer it all came together, with great crops.”

The couple also harvested the first crops out of the new greenhouse that Christof built last year.

“Upper Pitone Road is just a tad too cool to generate big summer crops - the greenhouse made all the difference.

We have a steady, large supply of tomatoes, eggplants, cucumber and gherkins, and not to forget sweet and juicy rock melons.”

All our waking hours are consumed with the luscious blueberries The couple sell fruit at the Farmers’ Market Taranaki most of the year. A commercial kitchen allows them to process and preserve their produce.

“Some of our produce we sell fresh, some we process and sell the resulting preserves, together with traditional sourdough bread, and gluten and dairyfree baking.”

With more of the fruit trees coming into production and the greenhouse providing the Frey’s with more than enough produce for the market, Christine now has an opportunity to start a flower garden - an area she has missed.

“I used to have a very large and varied flower garden in Switzerland but since we’ve moved onto the farm, all our work and money has been channelled into making it productive” she said.

Over the last three winters, Christine searched out specialised nurseries and began recreating a mixed border and is looking forward to the result in a few years.

The Frey’s introduced a white Galloway bull to run with their Highland cattle herd four years ago.

“All the calves have been polled, which makes them easier to sell as most people are uncomfortable with horned cattle,” said Christine.

“A large part are white with the typical marking of the White Galloway and they look like the cutest of teddy bears. The rest is a solid colour, either black or the dark red of Highlanders. A few have been dun-coloured,” she said.

The couple raise their cattle for meat or as breeding stock.

They are also breeding up their flock of East Friesian sheep with rams from Kingsmeade Dairy in the Wairarapa.

“Multiple births have become the norm, with triplets and quadruplets last year and again this year, plus a set of twins.”

A mixture of Indian Runners and Appleyard ducks also do their share of work in the orchard, controlling the insects and providing fertiliser. “They are my favourite workforce.” Christine said both breeds are layers of rather large, very tasty eggs.

“The Appleyard is a dual-purpose breed and I have been lucky enough to get some big-bodied stock from a breeder up north. They do make a sizeable meal, are great to look at, and are good layers.”

Christof, a fully-qualified diesel mechanic, works full-time on the property whilst Christine fits in her farm work around her administrative role at TGM Design.

“We are now refining what we’ve established to become more efficient in labour and revenue.”

GARY LORD Gary Lord was working as a builder when he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. “I went through a period of about two months when I was drinking half gallon jars of Raro and water throughout the day,” he said. “I was constantly thirsty.”

At the time, Gary didn’t match his symptoms to any condition or disease. But while working on a roof with a team of builders, the then 26-year-old’s symptoms took a turn for the worse.

Gary suddenly blacked out and almost fell off the roof.

The house that the building team were working on belonged to a former nurse. She suggested he get checked out.

“It was at her prompting that I went to the doctor,” said Gary.

“I was in hospital that night.” Gary remained in hospital for several days as medical staff started him onto a routine of daily insulin injections. “I felt very lethargic prior to going to hospital. “When I came out I had energy back and a more positive feeling.”

Gary said he had to make huge lifestyle changes. “You have to plan hours ahead what activities you are going to do.”

“You learn to read situations a lot better.” Four years ago Gary went onto an insulin pump and found this gives him more control over his symptoms. “It constantly feeds insulin into me and is far more manageable.”

GRANT LANGDON Grant was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was a teenager. A sudden weight loss and an intense thirst in his teenage years led Grant Langdon to visit his family doctor.

“I could drink like a horse,” said Grant. His doctor diagnosed diabetes before Grant had even reached his office. “He told me he knew there was a diabetic in the waiting room as he could smell their breath,” said Grant. “It has a sickly, sweet smell of ketones.”

“When I was a dairy farmer I could smell the same from cows with facial eczema.” Grant was immediately admitted to hospital and remained there for over a week. To manage the Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis, he was initially given one shot of insulin each day and placed on a strict diet. His diet consisted of restrictive carbohydrates. “It was difficult as a teenager as you want to be the same as everyone else,” he said.

“Diabetes had a dramatic effect on everything I did.” Over a period of time, Grant’s one insulin injection each day increased to four. He is now on an insulin pump, taking insulin according to what he’s going to eat. “It’s a very important tool.”

Grant said in hindsight, diabetes had an effect on the way he lived his life. “It taught you self-control which was not necessarily a negative. “It’s important to manage your own lifestyle.”

TREVOR SHARPE Feeling lethargic was one of Trevor Sharpe’s first symptoms before being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in 1972.

He and his wife, Betty, were dairy farming at Mangatoki at the time, running the farm on their own.

“Finding the effort to even get out of bed for the morning milking, along with the general running of the farm was getting on top of me,” said Trevor. After visiting his doctor and spending a week in hospital, Trevor was prescribed tablets to manage his symptoms. “These kept me on the straight and level,” he said. Trevor returned to the farm and found a gradual improvement. Exercise in the form of general farm work also helped.

“Exercise is very important for those with diabetes.” Trevor said other lifestyle changes included watching his diet and eating meals on time. Around 2000, Trevor’s doctor put him onto insulin and a finger-pricking blood test kit helped to monitor and control his blood sugar levels.

Trevor and Betty sold their farm in 1994 and moved into Eltham. Trevor is the liaison representative for the Diabetes NZ South Taranaki area branch. The group meets in Stratford every second month to listen to guest speakers and support each other.

JIM FRANDSEN Although Jim Frandsen’s mother, sister and brother all became diabetics, he never thought he could become one too. It wasn’t until he was on holiday in Australia in 1998 and became ill with gallstones, that doctors told him he had diabetes. “Doctors told me I had a reading of 44 which is almost unheard of, so it was back to the hospital to get that sorted out.”

Jim accepted that he had diabetes and on his return to New Zealand, went back to milking cows. With the help of the Diabetes NZ South Taranaki area branch, his doctor, and watching his diet, Jim has been able to live a normal life. Jim is now 87 years old, walks as much as possible to keep fit and enjoys fresh produce from his backyard vegetable garden. “I don’t live in fear of diabetes,” said Jim. “Look after yourself and stay healthy, and if you have a diabetic group near you, go and join them as they will give you any help you need. “Get yourself checked occasionally when you go to see a doctor — it saves you a lot of worry.” Jim is the co-ordinator of the Diabetes NZ South Taranaki area branch and is also a life member of the group.

With shearing getting underway, former world champion shearer Sir David Fagan is encouraging farmers to work with their shearers to manage injury risks.

Shearing means long hours and the increased risk of back injuries, sprains, strains and hand wounds — last year, 129 people suffered severe injuries while shearing.

“Contractors who shear or crutch thousands of sheep each year are generally well set up to manage risks, however, shearing gear needs to be well-maintained, and if you’re upgrading the shearing plant, consider a safety sensor with a cut-out switch,” says Sir David Fagan, five-time individual World Champion and seven-time World Team Champion.

“Farmers should also ensure their stock are fasted and empty before shearers arrive. A full animal is heavier and awkward to handle and increases the chance of an injury to the shearer.”

Sir Fagan encourages farmers to check the tracks to the woolshed are safe for shearers’ vehicles and ensure the woolshed steps are not slippery.

“A safe and clean working environment with basic facilities such as toilets and wash basins is also a good idea.”

WorkSafe’s Sector Lead for Agriculture, Al McCone, says farmers and shearers need to take the time to check all gear before shearing gets underway.

“It’s really important to make sure everyone takes extra care when operating equipment like the wool press and grinders,” he says.

Exploring the land and its people

As well as art and culture, you’ll find history aplenty to fill in the story of the Taranaki region and its pioneers. Outside of New Plymouth the bastion of the mountain looms long, but there’s so much more to see and do.

From the gramophones, fire engines and classic cars of the Johnston Collections in Waitara, to the lovingly dedicated Taranaki Country Music Museum, where Thursday evenings see the guitars and singing voices tuned up amid memorabilia from the icons of the genre, there’s a multitude of perspectives on the museum concept.

While Helen and Ian Braithwaite’s hall of country music legends is alive with contemporary sound, places like the Taranaki Pioneer Village look back as far as the 1840s, presenting a tableau of the hardships and triumphs of early New Zealand.

Outside of our human timescale, of course, stands the land itself. Many tourists travel halfway around the world just to hike the slopes of Mount Taranaki, or to walk the tracks which wind around lakes Rotokare, Mangamahoe and Rotorangi. Many hikers begin their adventure at Dawson Falls, where the Department of Conservation maintain a centre with knowledgeable staff.

Building begins from the ground up, and the very foundations of a house or home define what is to grow above.

But in fact, like the rest of the house, this ‘home base’ will need to revisited during the life of the house. This may be more so in rural areas where some farm buildings may have started life in pioneer days.

Over time piles can rot away causing them to fail, while ground conditions may change from a number of causes — water reticulation, or even earth tremors.

If the house was built in an era that used totara piles, an examination will soon determine if repiling has happened. New piles are either concrete or tanalised (H5) pine and are easy to spot. Make sure to check out that all the piles have been replaced. It is quite common that only a few piles are new, often just around the edge of the house.

damage. If you are planning renovations, it pays to start with firm foundations or you are going to end up with an inferior result.

This involves digging new piles down to a firm base and attempting to realign the house on this new foundation.

Ask the experts. A house inspector is a good start.

Repiling is a major job and different suppliers use different methods — some cut holes in the floor for access and some lift the entire house on jacks to make room to work.

Repiling requires a building permit — other additions and changes to the house can be added to the same permit so it pays to plan ahead.

The mystery of pipelines Pipelines are those expensive things you have to have to convey water or other fluids (or gases) and best bought at cheapest possible price — correct? Wrong! If you consider it, they are often difficult to alter if the system is incorrect.

All liquids and gases moving along a containment vessel have pressure loss due to friction from the walls and turbulence from various changes in the shape or direction of the vessel.

Temperature of the liquid also has a bearing, but let’s keep it to the most basic issue of pressure loss. Also some things which can be done to cut down on the turbulence including long radius bends instead of tight bends, welded fittings in place of threaded sockets, etc.

One of the biggest mysteries for amateurs is the relationship between pipe sizes and friction loss/flow rate.

In a nutshell, the friction loss multiplies as the pipe size reduces — they are not proportional! Often a bargain price for next-size-smaller pipe has a major negative impact on the efficiency of the system.

As a scenario: Consider a small block irrigation scheme of 4ha. The well and shared

pump are 200m into neighbouring property and the most distant hydrant on the block is a further 300m, making maximum delivery length of 500m.

The flow required is 300L/min. At this point it doesn’t matter what type of irrigator is used, seeing as we’re only considering the pressure loss in the main pipeline. Sizes discussed will all be internal to avoid confusion between PVC, LDPE and MDOD pipe options (never mind aluminium).

If 3" pipe were used the friction/ pressure loss could be 9psi for the full distance, if 2½" used could be 22psi

loss, 2¼" could be 50psi loss, and good ole 2" alkathene could be 87psi loss!

This is without the pressure required to run the irrigator or allowing for rising ground, etc.

If 2" alkathene were selected for this job then the pump would quite possibly need to be 7.5hp larger than if 3" pipe were used. Rather a sober consideration for a small system and a great energy waste which could easily be avoided.

But the real key to quality long term lies with the farmer. On the agricultural front the value of animal effluent is a fact of life and has consequences for the bottom line. Effluent disposal also means effluent utilisation.

The by product, particularly of dairying, is a great fertiliser. It contains nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), sulphur (S) and trace elements that you’d normally pay for to have applied to pasture.

The average dairy herd of 250 animals produces the same amount of effluent as a medium sized rural town.

When spread over land and applied correctly the effluent of 100 cows can save thousands of dollars.

While it might be ‘liquid gold’ water troughs need to be protected from spray sources as well as waterways, where the rule is to keep the distribution 50 metres away.

Soil can only filter so much effluent and therefore application depths should be adjusted accordingly to reflect soil and weather conditions.

Too much effluent can kill pasture — especially where effluent has ‘ponded’ on the soil surface as well as polluting nearby streams and rivers as it runs off paddocks into waterways. Then

there is ground water itself that must be protected, and that’s where local knowledge comes into play. Getting a certified assessor can be good practice, particularly when effluent systems have been upgraded. You may not be aware of all the rules that must be complied with.

Dairy industry advice is that when buying or selling a farm, it’s advisable to get an independent person to prepare a comprehensive report.

The assessor checks over the entire farm where there are areas that effluent collects and the corresponding infrastructure, including feed pads, underpasses, storage ponds and the irrigation network as well as a lot more.

It is a thorough assessment and also diagnostic. It takes between three and four hours to complete. A report is then

prepared for the farm owner or manager.

Accredited designers should be called in when you are upgrading your system or installing a new system. The assessors are not designers, as they are trained to assess the current system on farm in a consistent way. However, over time there will be accredited designers that are also certified ‘WoF’ assessors.

All the information that is gathered is stored in a central database at QCONZ. It is only used to analyse trends on farms over time and to see if there are any areas of concern that the dairy industry needs to focus more attention on.

The honest truth?

I felt honoured to be included in a group of 11 farmers and advisers who recently converged on the South Island for a study tour over a week.

Our main purpose was to observe better management systems on dairy farms, particularly in respect to biological and chemical usage of fertiliser. Our first destination was the Dairy NZ Field day at Back Track Farms in Methven, Canterbury. This is a three year study comparing the two systems, the biological farm being managed under the Albrecht-Kinsey system and the xhemical farm under the Ballance Agri-Nutrients approach.

We are currently on Year 2 and the outline of the trial was set out in the January 2014 Dairy Exporter magazine.

My mission was to gather all the information available to us, including the initial parameters, the Albrecht-Kinsey process and the approach of Ballance Agri-Nutrients as referenced from their website and general client practice in New Zealand. I have attended the last two annual Fieldays where the annual scientific measurements have been presented. I have observed that to go to a single field day without looking at the whole picture, will give a totally different outcome to a person’s thinking if they are looking for an indicator of the honest truth.

Both parties that are involved with the fertiliser have full and open access to fertiliser tests, applications and the results of those applications. It was interesting to see that the biological side is producing generally more positive results. At the May Field Day at Back Track Farms the Albecht-Kinsey

farm reported 500 kgs/ha more grass grown over the year than the chemical farm while using 43 units of Nitrogen/ha less. More clover growth, higher winter soil temperature, higher production per hectare, lower Somatic Cell Count and a higher Effective Farm Surplus were all points to be noted in support of the Albrecht-Kinsey farm. On our recent visit to the Dairy NZ Field Day on October 6, the Albrecht-Kinsey farm was still showing positive gains over and above the chemical farm, namely higher soil temperatures, cows producing 2.4 kgs MS/cow/day compared to 2.2, 5.57 kgs MS/ha/day compared to 5.26 and 13 cows showing clinical milk fever compared to 35. An observation and comment made was that the higher production and better clean-up of pasture on the Albrecht-Kinsey farm was from better quality pasture because of higher amounts of clover.

In recent months the Albrecht-Kinsey system has been regarded as ‘pseudoscience’ by a leading soil scientist who also suggests that science has already proved that any innovation is just wasting tax payer’s money particularly relating to soil fertility. If this soil scientist is referring to the science which is being practised in New Zealand by Ballance Agri-Nutrients, then let’s take a look at them.

Their website is very impressive and there are a couple of very important scientific standards that they follow.

Many farmers in New Zealand would agree that their standard advice is to have a pH in the soil of between 5.8 and 6.0.

In fact their leading scientist had an article at the beginning of the 2015 Dairy season stating that if the pH is 5.9, then you are wasting your money putting on fertiliser that would increase

it. Based on this information, I went to the May 2016 Field Day to find that the pH on the Ballance Agri-Nutrients farm was sitting at 6.3. Upon questioning them how they got that pH to 6.3, they replied that they had applied 2.5 tonne/ ha of lime. My next question of course was “Did they know what the pH was before they applied that lime?” They said that ‘Yes, it was 5.9 pH’.

A sceptic might suggest that Ballance Agri-Nutirents are changing their policies to ‘keep up’ with the positive advantages being shown by the AlbrechtKinsey system.

At the October 6 Field Day there was a positive move from the biological side to target a reduction in the amount of nitrogen applied yet again from 117 kgs/ha/year to around 100 kgs/ha/ year.

Discussions at that Field Day suggested that the chemical farm would follow suit. For Ballance to copy and follow the Albrecht-Kinsey system, then there will not be any significant difference which is, of course, what they are reporting.

My conclusion is that the AlbrechtKinsey system of soil fertility in this trial is leading science and Ballance AgriNutrients are learning a lot from it. The next field day should prove interesting.

There are some names in the world of internal combustion which evoke images of racing glory, grand-touring luxury or off-road grit. Just mention Rolls-Royce, Ferrari or Land Rover, and a whole history springs to mind.

With a history spanning over a century, this is one badge embraced by racers, weekend cruisers and rebels alike. From the original ‘silent grey fellow’ through to the ‘knucklehead’ V-twin of World War Two, through to the big powerful V-rod of the present day, the story of the machines from Milwaukee would seem to describe an upward curve of displacement and power. But that’s a stereotype which, in true rebellious fashion, Harley Davidson is set to challenge with its Street 500 range.

Stripped back and pared down to the essentials of city riding, the Street 500 is a pure Harley down to the nuts and bolts, but it is no big highway cruiser.

Dairy fats OK say experts For decades, experts advised people to reduce their fat intake, however they now agree that fats are actually beneficial for people’s health, and dairy fats have an important role to play.

Fonterra Senior Research Scientist and Nutritionist, Dr Elisabeth Weichselbaum, explained that the idea that fat makes you fat was flawed.

Research today shows that, people who eliminated fats from their diet often replaced them with refined carbohydrates, which in turn is thought to have contributed to the double burden of obesity and diabetes.

“Fat not only provides a valuable source of energy, but also delivers key building blocks for the body and essential, fat-soluble vitamins. Dairy, which is a natural source of fat, plays a key part in this because it is packed full of nutrients,” she said.

“In fact, evidence suggests that diets with higher amounts of dairy, including full fat versions of foods like cheese, milk and yoghurt, are associated with a lower risk of conditions such as a stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Including dairy in the diet can

also help with weight management.

People who consume more dairy, including full-fat dairy, have been found to gain less weight over time. It’s a good idea to make sure you get your daily serves of dairy when following a weightloss plan as this can help lose more body fat and maintain muscle.”

However, not all dairy is created equal.

New Zealand’s cows graze outdoors all year round so are predominately grassfed. Milk from grass-fed cows have higher levels of beta-carotene, omega-3, vitamin E and conjugated linoleic acid, which is a unique polyunsaturated fat. Early evidence indicates that CLA may play a role in supporting immune function, maintaining cardiovascular health and may have anti-inflammatory properties.

“As the multiple health benefits of fats become more well-known, we’re seeing more consumers reaching for dairy as a nutritious and healthy food choice,” Dr Weichselbaum said.

Sometimes health problems can become a sort of vicious cycle.

Osteoarthritis can cause significant joint pain which limits mobility and can reduce the ability to exercise. Reduced mobility leads to weight gain which further reduces mobility and add extra stress to arthritic joints. I have had many clients in this situation and it can be very distressing.

When someone is overweight and has arthritis in weight-bearing joints my goal with diet is initially just to create a healthier diet. If we just focus on weight loss this can create another cycle of yo-yo dieting which has limited benefits and is a cause of psychological stress.
