“This partnership provides farmers with a more environmentally-friendly fencing option, made from the packaging of our farmers’ milk, which is pretty special,” says Fonterra Brands New Zealand’s Sustainability and Environment manager, Larisa Thathiah.

“It is not enough to just recycle anymore: it is about creating less waste full stop, or at least turning it into something useful. That is why these fence posts are so exciting — they are made from 100 per cent recycled material, and have a life expectancy of more than 50 years.”

The Future Post partnership is the latest waste reduction initiative from Fonterra. Managing director of Future Post, Jerome Wenzlick, says it is great to have support from Fonterra, and he is looking forward to developing other sustainable products for farmers.

“What we are doing is repurposing waste that could have gone to landfill and turning it into a valuable product

for consumers. Our partnership with Fonterra gives us access to a steady supply of raw material from the co-op’s own recycling initiatives. It also gives us access to a network of nationwide Farm Source stores that can sell the fence posts, and access to 10,000 farmers who are actively engaged in environmental initiatives, like fencing to keep cows out of waterways and planting along river banks.

“Future Post is a start-up, but we have plans for some new products in 2019, including those for non-farming sectors.”

Anchor Light Proof milk bottles are collected from the Fonterra Takanini site and transported to the Future Post Waiuku plant, where they are mixed with soft plastics and turned into fence posts.

The fence posts will be available in selected Fonterra Farm Source stores across the North Island in the New Year, with plans to launch in South Island stores mid-2019.

The crop cup competition The Taranaki Federated Farmers’ Turnip and Fodder Beet Competition has returned after more than 70 years bringing trophies back to life in what was once classed as an important regional competition.

The competition was re-established in 2017 after the trophies were found stored at the Federated Farmers office — some dating from the 1930s.

“I came across the trophies and thought the competition would be great for farmers now,” said provincial office manager, Jessie Waite.

“It is crazy to think they had been redundant for more than 70 years and last year we had some great entries including from a relative of one of the original winners.”

The Turnip Cup was first awarded to J Phillips in 1933, and in 1935 L Bishop was the inaugural winner of the Mixed Crop trophy, which is now the Fodder Beet trophy.

“I encourage people to enter as they are able to benchmark themselves on where other farmers crops are and what is best for their farm.

“Winning one of the cups is about the nostalgia and getting your name alongside past winners — the history makes it a unique event as some trophies date back to 1929. Many were last awarded in the early 1930s, including the cup for best carrots in North Taranaki, which was won in 1934

by JH Paulger.”

Mustering sheep with her dogs, in the Taranaki hill country, is one of Anna Hardwick-Smith’s greatest passions. Adding sheepdog trials to the mix has helped build a deeper working connection with her team.

A

nna was born and raised on the family farm, Kohunui, at Mangamingi. Her grandfather bought the property in 1917 and then her father took it over in 1952, farming it for nearly 40 years. Anna was farming in Te Anau when her father needed to slow down a little, so her brother took on running the family farm.

As a child and later a teenager, when Anna was home for holidays, she helped her father on the farm with mustering and other stock jobs.

“I always loved the farm, and spent a lot of time with my father,” said Anna.

It was during her teenage years that she first learned how to work sheepdogs,

and Anna’s father taught her how to train the young ones.

In 1983, after Anna graduated from Massey University with a bachelor in veterinary science, she headed to the South Island.

“I worked as a vet in Southland for some years before I got an opportunity to be in charge of an 800-acre Landcorp block, under a general manager, in the Te Anau basin,” said Anna.

“I farmed 1,100 deer, a 300 goat Angora stud, and the stud Romney ewes from the larger Landcorp farm my block was attached to.”

After a year with Landcorp, Anna and her husband Brian bought a 650-acre

sheep and beef farm near Manapouri.

While Brian started up a veterinary practice in Te Anau village, Anna farmed the property. She also got involved with the Mararoa Dog Trial Club, initially just helping out.

“Eventually I got brave enough to have a go at trialling at those local trials. But I was too busy running my farm on my own to get too involved with travelling to other trials.”

Anna ran that farm for close to 10 years. When her parents’ health began to fail, Brian and Anna returned to Mangamingi. Anna’s six dogs and her horses came too.

The couple bought a 40-acre property near Anna’s home farm, and where her parents still lived. Anna took up mustering and stock work for several neighbours and was on hand to help her parents when necessary.

She also began helping out with the Eltham-Takau Dog Trial Club, based in Mangamingi and ran her two heading bitches, Leaf and Jan. In 2006, Anna’s horse fell over on the side of a slippery hill, leaving Anna with a serious foot injury, which took almost a year to heal. During this time, Anna was persuaded to have a go at the yarding trials in Hamilton, followed

by Piopio three months later.

“In yarding trials, one doesn’t have to limp quite so far,” said Anna.

“I ran my four-year-old Grip (who was a son of my Jan) and a son of Grip’s called Deal.”

At the Piopio event, which was Anna’s second attempt at yarding trials, Grip

won the Open North Island section still as a maiden dog. Deal placed third in the maiden class.

Anna was so inexperienced that initially, she didn’t realise what she had won.

“Knowing I had won, purely because of a good dose of luck (getting good sheep), it rather put me off further trialling for a while.

“I thought people were going to think I was good at it and would expect me to do well again.

“I also didn’t realise that most people who do trialling know how easy it is to be on the top one day, then have a totally embarrassing run the next, so as a sport it is a great leveller.”

Eventually, Anna began to compete in the hills trials in Taranaki with two younger heading dogs.

Five years ago Anna acquired a heading dog she renamed Rip, from another farmer in the valley.

“He was already a year old and quite a handful,” said Anna.

“Rip was a very intense dog with terrific focus on the sheep and none on the human at that stage.”

Anna took Rip to visit Whangamomona dog triallist and sheep farmer Dan Murphy. Dan encouraged Anna to persist with Rip and gave her some tips on how to cope with the dog’s intense attitude.

“So Rip joined my mustering team, and soon became my main heading dog as he is a big, strong dog and always keen to go all day long.” With a tentative start, Anna began trialling Rip at hill trials.

“I found he was not very good at settling flighty sheep. If the sheep were bold and argumentative, he did much better, because his power and presence persuaded them they had better behave.”

As Anna always helped out behind the scenes at the Hawera Indoor Trials, she decided to enter two of her dogs, Tui and Spark, in 2015.

The following year she ran Rip, placing third. In 2017, Anna and Rip won.

“This year I ran Rip and another young bitch called Star.” Rip placed second.

“He is getting calmer and smoother in

his action with age and experience,” said Anna.

“Maybe I am too,” she added.

Anna currently has a team of five dogs. There are also two three-monthold pups of Rip’s waiting in the wings.

“I like to train a dog so that it still thinks and uses its natural ability, without having to be told every move to make. However, it must never forget that if a command is given, it must not be ignored.

“This is the sort of training Dan Murphy does too, and he’s a master at it.”

A broken leg and a lifelong passion for tractors, machinery and technology saw Phillip Hopkins switch from dairy farming to a career as an agricultural contractor.

P

hillip grew up on a Taranaki dairy farm. After leaving Stratford High School, he spent six seasons working in the dairy sector.

Tractor work has always been a big feature in Phillip’s life, and when he broke his leg, he decided to give agricultural contracting a go. During the four years working for a Stratford-based agricultural contractor, Phillip’s career enabled him to travel and work overseas, regularly leaving New Zealand’s winters to follow the sun, sowing crops on the arid plains of Western Australia and harvesting wheat in the United States.

Between April and July last year, Phillip worked on a 5,500-hectare sheep and cropping farm near Esperance in Western Australia. He planted wheat and canola.

“I loved it,” said Phillip. “I drove a massive 500 horsepower John Deere with an 18-metre seed bar.

“To put it into perspective, the biggest drill I pull in Taranaki is 5.2 metres wide.”

Phillip said it was all very big machinery.

“The sprayer I used was self-propelled, and it had a 36-metre wide boom.”

Phillip was working in 1,000-hectare paddocks. The largest he’s seen in Taranaki is 28 hectares, with the average size being three to eight hectares.

In 2016, after an internet search for harvesting jobs in the United States, Phillip ended up working there for eight months.

“It’s unreal how easy it is,” said Phillip.

“They help you get a visa, and you jump on a plane and head over there.”

Phillip harvested wheat and corn. He was based in Kansas, travelled down to Texas and then back up to North Dakota.

“It was amazing. It was one of the best experiences of my life.”

He also made some life-long friends.

“I ended up driving all types of machinery you wouldn’t see in New Zealand on that type of scale.”

“It’s vital you are hungry to learn, especially when it comes to technology,” he said.

“Auto-steering isn’t widely used in Taranaki, but it is in Australia and the United States. It’s handy when a run can be half an hour long.”

The Central Taranaki young farmer member lives in Opunake. He began working as an agricultural contractor for Gopperth Contracting in October last year.

Gopperth Contracting runs a fleet of New Holland tractors ranging in size from 120 to 270 horsepower.

“No two days are the same,” he said.

“We do a lot of work that I never imagined a contractor would do. I enjoy the variety.

“The business has two six-tonne Kobelco diggers, which means added variety in the jobs we take on.”

Over the winter Phillip has been working on race maintenance of dairy farms.

“We’ve helped build a couple of new herd homes on dairy farms in the Stratford and Eltham areas.

“We worked closely with the builder to remove clay and topsoil to prepare the site and cart in metal.”

On wet days during winter, Phillip can be found in the workshop cleaning, greasing and servicing equipment.

the gear is ready for spring to minimise breakdowns during the busy period.”

As the daylight hours lengthen and the weather warms up, Phillip spends more time in a tractor cab.

“I could start the day spraying or drilling, then by mid-morning be towing a loader wagon picking up grass silage.”

Phillip said working outdoors, seeing progress and getting the job done are some of the daily highlights in agricultural contracting.

He believes it is vital agricultural contractors keep up with technology.

“Some of the technology used overseas will be coming into New Zealand eventually.

“I want to have some tractors of my own and offer services not currently available.”

Although the opportunities for work overseas remain, Phillip will always return to Taranaki.

“Taranaki is my home.”

THE INCREDIBLE ORCHID

An industrial chemist by profession, Ross Tucker creates exotic and unusual orchids — displaying to the world a vast array of creativity and succession of the plants, which date back thousands of years.

“O

rchids can flower all year round, and apart from hobby growers, we are probably the one exotic speciality store in the country selling online at Tucker Orchids,” says Ross.

Being a chemist, he also developed a fertiliser ‘Orchid Tucker’ and plants generally some orchids, can bloom within six weeks of use.

“My interest began because my grandfather grew orchids as a gardener in England for a ‘Lord’ at a country estate. After he fought in World War One, he came here and brought plants

with him and grew slipper orchids for the cut flower market. My mother had them in the yard, and they needed rescuing,” says Ross. The main method of reproducing orchids is through flasks or tissue culture, and Ross understood the technical terms in books he read so began producing flasks of orchids — approximately 25 plants grow in a glass jar via seed or reproduction and mericloning.

“I added varieties and experimented reproducing them. As a hobby grower, I overproduced quickly and ran out of space but with the New Zealand cut Ross and Susan Tucker at Tuckers Orchid Nursery have added many varieties of orchids to their collection

flower industry in its infancy around the 1970s they needed stock, so we became a supplier.

“In the beginning orchid exports were financially profitable, if not better than the New Zealand wine industry. Due to government restrictions over the past 30 years, it is now almost a non-existent export industry. We had approximately 300 growers exporting cymbidium cut flowers across the world, and we are now down to 30 because MPI put so many rules in place with no support and that businesses got sold up.

“It was devastating for our growers, and the Taiwanese saw the opportunity and took our market and customers.

They now earn around seven billion dollars a year.

“I now produce pot plant orchids for the New Zealand market and some varieties most people have never seen.

Some are so rare; they cannot be exported, including New Zealand natives.

Many are threatened, and the national orchid body are trying to conserve them but keep running up against issues with MPI restrictions — because MPI don’t understand the plant biology and should consult with people that are experts not rely on their limited knowledge.”

Ross sends plants offshore believing other countries will be the heroes and keep them in circulation.

“I brought a shipment in from China, and MPI literally took plants that were 6,000 years old and destroyed them. They just killed them with no understanding of what it was they were

destroying — that is horrific,” says Ross.

“I believe Chinese philosopher Confucius grew them thousands of years ago.

The Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in Taiwan has the rice drawings of orchids.

Scientific research is phenomenal, and documentaries note that Darwin watched orchids and they really do seek a specific pollinator.

“The subspecies of an insect is specific to each genera, and without that pollinator, you cannot keep the orchid alive in its natural environment. MPI refuse to understand; it is that simple and uncalled for restrictions mean plants die.”

“Ross finds perfumed ones fascinating and hybridises colours, forms and scents. Orchids grow in every climate and continent except Antarctica that I know of.

“Some grow under snow, die down and return in spring. It is the most evolved plant in the plant kingdom and its reproduction is often called ‘sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll’.

“This is because some mimic the insect to attract it to procreate, some produce a drug, which gets their pollinator high and some offer pheromones.”

Ross breeds plants unique to New Zealand and speaks at events around the world.

“My line is highly scented and called Zygopetalum, which means tongue.

We have developed scents and have thousands of varieties on-site, but there

are some 33,000 species worldwide yet to collect. Other countries are driven by orchids, and New Zealand will catch up once MPI scientists learn and understand what they are dealing with instead of destroying them.

“We constantly produce new varieties because people are collectors and keeping it fresh is important. I love developing new varieties. We win awards and are world recognised with a few

hundred varieties registered with the Royal Horticultural Society. ”Orchids are amazing, and they are the number one pot plant in the world at present, and here in New Zealand they will achieve stardom.”

Young farmers networking Taranaki was one of the regions NZ Young Farmers new chief executive Lynda Coppersmith visited on her recent tour across the North Island enabling her to attend NZYF-organised events and club meetings in Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay, and the Waikato.

Based in Christchurch, Lynda started at NZ Young Farmers on October 1, and various clubs organised special meetings with her. Whilst in Taranaki more than 30 Central Taranaki Young Farmers members turned out at the Toko Tavern.

“Those social gatherings helped me realise just how important clubs and members are to our identity. I met some really engaged members who are passionate about the role our organisation plays in helping young people connect and grow,” she said.

“They blew me away with their passion and how they engage with the TeenAg groups and mentoring in schools. They do a great job with the students, and it was very encouraging.

We would love to see this more through our membership base connecting with schools and encouraging young people into the farming industry.”

Central Taranaki Young Farmers is using some of the money it receives from sponsor CMK to subsidise memberships for new members.

In Hawke’s Bay Lynda joined 35 teachers on a Teachers’ Day Out, an annual event, which gets teachers out of the classroom and into fields and factories.

“We visited Patangata Station and the

well-known Waipawa Butchery, and the Zeffer Cider Company. Zeffer Cider is an award-winning company, which has just relocated from Auckland to Hawke’s Bay, where its fruit is grown.

“They loved it. They were absolutely blown away. The teachers met lots of inspiring people who really got their imaginations going.”

The event is part of the vital work NZ Young Farmers carries out in schools to promote the primary industries.

“One of the Beef + Lamb New Zealand guest speakers talked about the huge range of careers on offer for students.

The primary sector needs another 50,000 qualified workers by 2025.

We are playing a key role in helping to achieve that target.”

Chondroitin: Forgotten hero If you use a joint supplement for osteoarthritis, then stop reading and get the bottle and check the amount of chondroitin sulphate (CS) in the daily dose. Most older-style formulas will have up to 20% CS in the formula typically about 200mg in a daily dose. Chondroitin is a structural component of cartilage adding strength and resistance to compression.

The study that changed it all for me was published in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases (Wildi et al, 2011) the study title is: Chondroitin sulphate reduces both cartilage volume loss and bone marrow lesions in knee osteoarthritis patients starting as early as six months after initiation of therapy: a randomised, doubleblind, placebo-controlled pilot study using MRI. Eighty people with similar grades of knee OA were chosen. Half the participants were given 800mg of CS as 400mg twice daily for six months.

The other group was given a placebo.

The two groups were then compared after six months. The group using CS had much less cartilage loss.

The next phase then gave all the participants 800mg of CS for another six months. The same results occurred.

Those that had been on the placebo showed a reduction in cartilage loss

while the group that had continued with CS now for 12 months continued with much less cartilage loss.

As a consequence, I reformulated my joint support formula and lifted CS to the levels used in the study. I also added a potent anti-inflammatory 95% curcumin (from turmeric) extract.

Even joints that show signs of degeneration can improve. As an example one man I have been helping noticed significant improvements in mobility and comfort after only a few months and is now even able to ski again. Give me a call or email john@abundant.co.nz if you need more information.

The 2018–19 velvet market season is expected to be reasonably stable, with consumption in Asia increasing in line with production growth in New Zealand.

Apart from a brief downward dip in prices two years ago, driven by uncertainty about regulatory changes in China, NZ velvet production and prices have increased for eight years.

Deer Industry NZ Asia manager, Rhys Griffiths, cautions that this trend cannot continue forever as there are always unknowns that could upset the market, such as an escalation in the trade war between China and the United States, but based on all the known factors, he says deer farmers can expect another good year.

“Major velvet exporters and DINZ are working closely together, building demand with major health food companies in Korea. These companies prefer to deal direct with their NZ suppliers and put high value on price stability. It gives them the confidence to invest in product development,” says Mr Griffiths.

Branded health foods based on NZ velvet have transformed the Korean market, and creating a similar product category in China is a priority for the industry.

“In contrast, for the commodity traders who still buy two-thirds of NZ velvet, price instability can be a good thing. Despite good prices, we are putting a lot of energy into building strong relationships with manufacturers and marketers in our major markets. We are taking control of our own destiny and making the commodity traders less relevant.”

He says 200 tonnes of the expected 725-tonne 2018–19 harvest will go to health food companies selling high value branded products in South Korea — a market segment that didn’t exist 10 years ago.

“Since then, following the lead of the Korean Ginseng Corporation, 30 companies have developed and marketed 73 velvet-based health food

products, most of which are enjoying strong consumer demand. Of these, 55 are based on NZ velvet, with the New Zealand provenance strongly promoted.”

New Zealand wants to repeat this success story in China, where — along with Australia — it is the only legitimate source of imported velvet.

This valuable status is the result of a Regulated Control Scheme for Deer Velvet Harvest implemented by the Ministry for Primary Industries in August 2017, which set stricter on-farm hygiene, traceability and cool chain standards for velvet.

DINZ has been working with Chinese regulatory agencies to provide a clear pathway for imports of NZ velvet to manufacturers in China.

“Health food marketers in China are very much aware of the success of velvet-based health foods in Korea, but they want to be sure that the velvet they are buying is legitimate and is available in sufficient quantities at stable prices before they invest the large sums needed to develop and market new products.

“It took several years for DINZ and exporters to interest Korean health food manufacturers in developing velvetbased products. It will be the same for China, where DINZ is talking to some firms who are considering whether to take the plunge.

“Over the coming years, we expect direct exports to Korean manufacturers to grow, aided by the annual reduction in the Korean tariff on dried NZ velvet.

More of the velvet that goes to China will be consumed there, and less of it will be re-exported to Korea.”

Programme’s positive feedback Okato-based vet Stacey Bateman has been working with local farmers to improve their herd performance, using information and resources on feed management and nutrition from DairyNZ’s FeedRight programme.

He had been on other DairyNZ levyfunded training courses and decided he needed a good grounding in nutrition to provide a proper advisory service.

“FeedRight training seemed a very good fit to complete the suite of services. I have applied the tools on a couple of farms so far. You can use it as part of a whole advisory package, or in a troubleshooting capacity,” he said.

Stacey has also used FeedRight with a herd fertility focus group he runs, receiving great feedback.

The mystery of irrigation systems Many farmers and lifestylers make life hard for themselves by not understanding the requirements of an effective irrigation system, be it water or effluent.

Following are some points to consider: 1. Decide how far this system may finally go. So often this is understated which makes adding on later difficult if the pipe is already too restrictive. It is generally better to have overlarge pipes than to be too small. You will save in pump energy anyway.

2. Pressure loss is linear by distance. The further you go the more pressure you lose in a proportional sense, ie 500m of pipe has twice pressure loss of 250m of the same pipe at same flow.

3. Understand the hose/pipe size being offered by the salesman. MDOD means Medium Density 0utside Dimension. Actual internal size will be at least 10mm–15mm smaller. Pressure loss is significantly greater.

4. Assuming flow is undiminished and correct size is selected, maintain pipe size to far end of the system.

Celebrating 20 years of connecting, educating and recognising dairy women in New Zealand, Dairy Women’s Network is set for a positive future.

Since its inception, Dairy Women’s Network has been supported by several industry partnerships, including DairyNZ, Ballance AgriNutrients, ASB and Fonterra.

“We are grateful to four incredible women, Hilary Webber, Robyn Clements, Willy Geck and Christina Baldwin for their passion, foresight and hard work in setting up the Dairy Women’s Network in 1998,” says CEO, Jules Benton.

“These founding women laid the groundwork for a network that, 20 years later, is 10,000 members strong, hosts thousands of attendees at more than 175 educational events every year and encourages dairy women to thrive through shared knowledge and connection.

“The increased profits, which were primarily attributed to higher sponsorship revenue and lower expenses, provides a solid platform for future growth and the ongoing support of its 10,000 members.“ At the recent AGM, attendees heard updates from the network’s strategic partners. ASB’s Mt Albert Grammar farm experience centre and development manager Peter Brice gave an overview of the new MAGS Farm, which enables urban children

to take part in agricultural education.

“The network’s goals for the future are based on growing and empowering great people to drive the dairy industry forward,” says Ms Benton.

“Our continued success will be determined not only by how well we connect with our members’ minds, but more importantly how we connect with their hearts — and this will be true for the entire dairy industry. We have come a long way since 1998 where women were the invisible force on the farm.

Now, they are business leaders and board members in their own right.

“Our continued focus now is to harness this progress and momentum and use it to continue driving forward.”

DWN chair, Cathy Brown, reflected on the network’s 20 years of connecting and empowering dairy women, saying the network is just as relevant now as it was two decades ago.

“Our members reflect the strength that exists in the industry, and our ability to walk alongside each other in an always-evolving industry has stood us in good stead.”

To mark its 20th year the network embarked on a strategy refresh to ensure it is well-placed to continue to meet the changing needs of its members.

Favourite wins at Manfeild If Manfeild was still in its former guise as a track for horse racing, it would have had shearer David Buick as one of its favourites as he shore at the Manawatu and West Coast A&P Show.

The Pongaroa shearer won the Open shearing title for a sixth time — his third win in four North Island competitions this season. It was his 18th open-class win, and in the six-man final he fleeced 15 sheep in 14min 40sec and won by 2.4163pts. Runner-up was Murray Henderson, of Halcombe, and Feilding shearer Aaron Haynes was third place with 0.0334 pts.

Among the finalists was Woodville shearer Tegwyn Bradley, in his first final in the top grade after being the country’s top-ranked senior last season, when his 14 wins included a Golden Shears title.

Napier shearer Ricci Stevens won the Senior final, Chris Dickson, of Eketahuna, won the Intermediate final, and Atawhai Hadfield, of Ruakituri, scored his third Junior win of the season.

Flipping the game

When engineering innovator John Regier sat down to change the way people mow their lawns, he began with the idea of a combine harvester, rendered small. Rather than scaling up a push mower — and in those days we really do mean the old reel-bladed iron monster — he combined elements of farm machinery with the turf care devices deployed on American football fields.

Of course, off the football field, you’ll find obstacles like bird baths, garden beds, pathways and shrubs. That means the ability to turn sharply and manoeuvre in tight spots was key to his mower’s success. And success was what awaited the first Hustler mower, spawning generations of big yellow machines for decades to come. Auto services at Bell Block Bell Block Service Centre was established in 2013 by John and Jackie Sewell to amalgamate their two businesses, Key Machinery and Bell Block Service Centre.

John personally has more than 30 years experience across many facets of the industry as a diesel mechanic and along with his team, they provide a range of mechanical services for light and heavy commercial trucks and trailers, fleets and light vehicles, taking care of everything from regular servicing to repairs and sourcing new and used parts.

Educators, students, kaitiaki, grassroots volunteers, farmers, businesspeople, scientists and technical specialists are among the recipients of 14 Environmental Awards from the Taranaki Regional Council.

“The winners are all tremendous examples of the Taranaki can-do attitude and highlight the practical environmentalism that’s a strong part of the regional culture,” says council chairman, David MacLeod.

“Their achievements are awe-inspiring and worthy of celebration, and of course, they are just the tip of the iceberg.

The 14 awards for 2018 were made in five categories. They take the total to 279 since the council began the annual presentations in the 1990s. The 2018 winners are: Environmental action in Education — sponsored by Contact.

Highlands Intermediate Marine Studies Group — for inspiring students through marine education and action.

Coastal Taranaki School Native NZ Bird Inquiry — for outdoor learning and action to restore and protect native biodiversity by removing predators, and Francis Douglas Memorial College — for removing predators and pest plants to restore native biodiversity at Paritutu Centennial Park.

Environmental leadership in land management — sponsored by Corteva Agriscience Agriculture Division of DowDuPont.

Roger Pearce — Waitotara Valley — for environmental stewardship, sustainable land management and native habitat restoration. Hansen Family — Huiroa / Matau — for environmental stewardship, sustainable land management and native habitat restoration.
