The IHC Calf and Rural Scheme helps New Zealanders like Luka

Although last year was a challenging season for the rural sector due to Mycoplasma bovis, farmers still managed to raise $650,000 through calf donations to the scheme. IHC national manager fundraising Greg Millar said despite falling short of the IHC’s one million dollars target; it was great to see the rural community continue to support the cause. “The Calf and Rural Scheme will continue, with this year more important than ever.

“While the process of the scheme has changed, its purpose has not; to make a real difference to the lives of people with intellectual disabilities, particularly those living in rural communities. Now, more than ever, we need your support,” said Mr Millar.

Since its launch in 1984, the IHC New Zealand Calf Scheme fast gained the support of the dairy industry. The scheme is off to a good start this year with pledges of calves already received.

Mr Millar said farmers are now asked to arrange transport of their IHC calves, along with their own calves, to the sales.

“Many farmers have told us they prefer this system, as it is more convenient to send the calf or calves at a time that suits them.”

The sale of that particular tagged calf will be donated to IHC from any saleyard in New Zealand. “If you aren’t able to send your calf or calves to sale with your own lot, IHC can pay to get it there,” Millar said.

“You just need to organise this with your local transporter and let us know.”

IHC acknowledges the ongoing support of PGG Wrightson Livestock, which has been involved with the scheme for more than 30 years.

For those who wish to donate in lieu of a calf, the IHC Virtual Calf Scheme option is still available via the IHC website ihc.org.nz/calf or phone 0800 442 500.

Top award for South Taranaki farmer

This year’s Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year, Trish Rankin, is a passionate environmentalist and committed dairy farmer.

Mrs Rankin holds a wide range of roles within the dairy industry. She also teaches part-time at Opunake Primary School and sharemilks 450 cows with her husband Glenn. In 2016 the couple won the Northland Sharefarmer of the Year award. They moved to South Taranaki with their four sons at the start of the 2017–18 dairy season, to sharemilk for Maori corporation Parininihi ki Waitotara.

“This is a very well-deserved recognition of Mrs Rankin’s commitment to dairying, her passion for environmental work on-farm and the multiple roles she plays in the sector and community,” said DairyNZ chief executive Dr Tim Mackle.

“We are very lucky to have Mrs Rankin involved in a number of key initiatives with us that are making a difference.”

Mrs Rankin is a DairyNZ Dairy Environment Leader (DEL) a group of farmers who work to achieve better outcomes for the environment and farming. The group is active in their communities at a grassroots level in different ways, on boards and local committees. Mrs Rankin is the chair of the Taranaki DEL group. She is also a contractor to DairyNZ as a Dairy Women’s Network module developer, a NAIT technical user adviser, and is involved in the Dairy Industry Awards.

In 2018 she was elected on to the National Executive for the New Zealand Dairy Awards and last year was selected as a DairyNZ climate change ambassador as part of the Dairy Action for Climate Change.

DairyNZ climate change ambassadors are a group of 15 farmers throughout the country who work with farmers to build their understanding of climate change.

They also provide a farmer’s voice. This year, Mrs Rankin has undertaken the Kellogg Rural Leadership Programme.

“Mrs Rankin is always involved in things that are going to benefit the dairy sector, the environment and the community,” said Dr Mackle.

“She is also keenly interested in contributing to the public perception of dairying.”

Dairy Women’s Network trustee Alison Gibb headed up the judging panel. She said judges were impressed with Mrs Rankin’s self-awareness, along with her preparedness to grow and focus on her ‘make it happen’ attitude towards problem-solving environmental issues.

The award was presented by Fonterra managing director of co-operative affairs Mike Cronin.

Watching the team grow, developing their passion and experience in farming is the most rewarding aspect of dairy farming for Landcorp farm business manager Tony Dowman.

G

rowing up on a 10-acre lifestyle block in Taranaki, Tony’s early connections to dairy farming were through grandparents and other close relatives. During visits with extended family members on dairy farms, and attending a rural primary school, Tony developed a desire to go dairying.

“I picked up the bug,” he said.

When Tony finished high school, he attended the Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre and then headed to

Massey University to study towards a diploma in agriculture. Tony completed courses in general rural leadership and rural staff management as well as other business and industry-related programmes. A move back to Taranaki followed where Tony managed a farm in Inglewood and sharemilked on another in Manaia. However, a back injury, caused by trying to fix a jammed milking platform, changed the direction of Tony’s career. He was no longer able to physically farm full-time.

Tony’s determination to continue in the industry led him towards farm business management. He took up employment, in a multi-faceted role, with Taratahi in Wairarapa as general manager of farm business and training, dairy business manager, and farm support officer. Tony’s position involved overseeing dairy farms in the North Island and organising staff training.

After eight years with Taratahi, Tony took on the Landcorp farm business manager position in December 2015.

Tony oversees the seven dairy farms in the Moutoa complex with herd sizes ranging from 300 to 880 cows. Two of these farms are converting to organics.

In 2017, Tony attended the Kellogg Rural Leadership programme which aims to develop leaders for the rural and agri-food sector. Based on a model developed in the US in 1965, the programme was set up in New Zealand in 1979 through the vision of Lincoln University research fellow John Pryde.

The WK Kellogg Foundation provided funding — there are two intakes of 24 students each year. Participants are selected from written applications by a committee, which includes representatives from industry partners.

The 17-day course is held across a six-month duration, with an individually selected project undertaken between the residential blocks.

The programme now has an alumni of more than 700 leaders in the agricultural sector, including John Palmer (former Air NZ and Rabobank chair), Nathan Guy (MP for Otaki), Barbara Kuriger (MP for

Taranaki), John Luxton (former MP and chair of DairyNZ), Stu Taylor (founder of Millennium Farming) and Lindy Nelson (executive director of Agri-Women’s Development Trust).

Today, the programme runs under the New Zealand Rural Leadership Trust, which also manages the Nuffield New Zealand Farming Scholarship.

A large portion of the programme’s costs is heavily subsidised by their industry partners — this keeps costs to individuals to a minimum.

Kellogg Rural Leadership Programme course director, Scott Champion, said visiting the capital city is a key part of the Kellogg Rural Leadership Programme, both in New Zealand and where it exists overseas.

“No other leadership programme provides participants with this level of knowledge in advocacy, influence and political process. The programme prides itself on the diversity of its participants, drawn from across industry sectors, geographical location, gender and role within the rural industry.”

As Tony had a growing interest in selfdirected learning, and the commitment needed to understand a research project, he applied to attend the course.

“The opportunity to connect with other progressive people and leaders across various parts of the agri-sector was also an appeal,” he said.

Tony centred his research project on Recruitment for the Future — Making the Dairy Industry the Career of Choice.

He has applied the programme’s learning to his career, and in addition

MANY HIGHLIGHTS FOR RURAL FESTIVAL

by Denise Gunn A Viking’s head, a bull tahr and a six-metre tall dandelion were among the winning entries at this year’s Kimbolton Sculpture Festival.

N

ow into its second year, the festival drew a crowd of more than 3,600 people, including rural sculptors from as far as Ashburton to Napier.

Kimbolton Arts and Sculpture Trust chairman Tony Waugh said the festival is an opportunity for rural people to have a go.

“Many issues face farmers in New Zealand; this is a way of bringing people together and doing something more

practical than just talking about the challenges we face.”

A wide range of materials was carefully crafted into sculptures to reflect farming and outdoor life. Ashburton butcher Stuart Mitchell won the top prize with his entry titled Bull Thar made from a bike chain, old tools, trailer and car parts.

“The idea came from not being able to shoot one, so I made one. Being from the South Island, Ashburton, they are a popular hunt,” said Stuart.

“The whole sculpture took about six months, just adding bits now and then after work and weekends.”

Stuar t’s sculpture impressed the judges.

“The spirit and form of this wild animal are captured wonderfully with a complex integration of scrap metal elements,” they said.

As a bonus, Stuart sold his winning work along with another he had entered in the New Zealand Small Sculpture Award.

Last year, Stuart won the Best Small Sculpture.

The People’s Choice Award went to the winner of the Creative Cocky Award, Massey University student Sophie Coleman. Sophie sculptured a sixmetre tall dandelion, Big Wishes, from corrugated iron, pipe and wire.

It was Sophie’s first year entering the festival and also the only sculpture she had ever created. It took her hundreds of hours for five months to create; the 19-year-old used 390 metres of wire, 43 metres of pipe from gates, 15 sheets of corrugated iron and a ballcock.

Sophie liked the idea of supersizing something that was very small in nature and decided on a giant 200:1 dandelion.

“The scale factor 200:1came from working out just how much the wire could handle when creating the 92 dandelion parachutes. I then catered to that maximum to make it as big as I possibly could.

“Seeing as it was so large, I had to make sure it was easily disassembled but still with a base strong enough,

through careful planning, to hold the weight of the seed head.”

Sophie said her sculpture aimed to symbolise happiness and the simple joys of life.

Judges said Big Wishes was on an Alice in Wonderland scale, making creative use of simple materials. An anonymous purchaser bought Sophie’s sculpture and donated it to the organising trust to put on public display in the Kimbolton village.

Local garage owner and last year’s overall winner, Terry Hawkins, took out the Local Yokel award with his Wally the Viking sculpture. Terry owns and runs the Kimbolton Garage, working on his sculptures in the evenings or weekends.

Judges described Terry’s sculpture as a stunning work that masterfully integrates an impressive variety of metal components.

The runner-up award went to Pam Corpe from Beaconsfield with her copper figure based on herself in firefighting kit.

Pam’s sculpture was made from three copper hot water cylinders subjected to “a lot of bashing with hammers”.

First-time entrant Paul Andersen won the Small Sculpture Award with his Singer Tractor, which was expertly crafted from an old Singer sewing machine.

Paul used parts from a fridge, cutlery, pushbike and car to create several different models including a steam roller, tractor, racing car and motorcycle. He estimates spending close to 20 hours creating his winning model but twice as many thinking about and planning it.

by Denise Gunn Three pupils from two small schools in the backblocks of eastern Taranaki have qualified for the national AgriKids competition.

T

he trio placed second at the recent Taranaki/Manawatu regional final to secure a spot in the upcoming event.

The team of 12-year-old students, Liam Hutchinson, Pippa Waite and Darren Pease, competed alongside 141 other students in teams from around the region.

With the aim of the event to encourage students to look at opportunities in primary industries, teams took on a series of fun agricultural modules.

These modules tested the students’

practical skills and knowledge. The top seven teams then went head-to-head in a fast-paced race-off hosted by Te Radar.

Two of the team members, Liam and Pippa, had previously entered AgriKids in 2017. This year’s regional competition was a first for Darren. He has attended the 17-pupil Marco School for all of his schooling, along with his twin sister and two older brothers. Liam attended Marco School for four years before enrolling at Toko. He has three other siblings. Pippa and her older brother attend Toko School.

Jumping for joy as the team near the finish line Toko School works with three small eastern districts schools: Huiakama, Makahu and Marco, to provide opportunities for their students.

“If those three schools don’t have enough students to field a team for an event or competition we will help them out,” said Toko School principal Kim Waite.

“At the end of the day, we don’t want kids missing out because of the size of their school.”

Living on sheep and beef farms provides the three teammates with plenty of opportunities to enjoy outdoor life. After school, weekends and school holidays are spent helping their families on the farms. The three students take on the usual farm jobs and caring for

the variety of pets they have between them. Darren particularly likes crutching and dagging hoggets. Mustering cattle and sheep on her horse is a favourite chore for Pippa. In Liam’s spare time, he enjoys taking his dog Blue mustering or catching feral goats. More than 600 goats are caught on the property and sold each year. Mrs Waite said all three pupils enter into local pig hunting competitions too and head out in pursuit of wild game with their friends and family.

“Physical education is their favourite subject,” she said. “They are really active kids.”

The annual lamb and calf day competition at their local schools is also a significant highlight on the

Mustering cattle and sheep on her horse is a favourite chore for Pippa calendar. The students put hours of work into caring, feeding and preparing their livestock for this event. All three students were surprised, and a little shocked after the scores were tallied up and their team was announced as AgriKids regional runner-up. Mrs Waite said they were super-excited to have won the obstacle course by such a big margin.

“They are really looking forward to the finals in Hawke’s Bay and plan to do lots of preparation in the lead-up. Liam and Pippa have asked their teacher if they can incorporate their preparation into their work at school of which, their teacher has said yes. The students are extremely proud of themselves.

They really enjoyed taking part in all

the modules and activities.” A team from Huntley School in Marton won the competition. South Makirikiri School, also near Marton, came third.

All three teams have qualified for the AgriKidsNZ grand final in Hawke’s Bay in July and will now begin fundraising to get there.

The event will see more than 60 students from across New Zealand tackle a series of modules and challenges.

AgriKidsNZ will take place alongside the prestigious FMG Young Farmer of the Year and FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year grand finals.

The answer to corrosion Prolan a lanolin based industrial lubricant and corrosion inhibitor made here in New Zealand has many uses within the agricultural and industrial sectors for preventing corrosion and lubricating machinery.

Commercial operators, as well as farmers, have found Prolan Enduro Heavy Grade when applied to a vehicle chassis is excellent as a rust preventative on 4WD, fertiliser loaders, truck, bus and motorhome chassis. In fact, it works that well that many vehicle-testing stations are recommending a coating of Prolan to prevent corrosion.

A spray on moldboards and ploughing equipment prevents rust and keeps them clean and in good condition. It is the unique ability of the lanolin in Prolan that penetrates into metal components that prevents corrosion. It saves the life of machinery exposed to air and moisture out in the field or during storage.

Around the workshop and for general maintenance Prolan’s ‘Enduro Medium grade’ works well as a general lubricant, penetrating into seized bolts, chains and other moving parts. It’s so versatile it replaces many other workshop lubricants and is used to stop squeaks as well as to prevent rust long term. Farmers and contractors have noticed that Prolan stays on once applied, saving repetitive maintenance.

For example, an orchard mulching contractor found by applying Prolan to his flails on his machine he saved

time on repeat applications instead of lubricating daily he used it once a week for maintenance. A coating of Prolan Enduro medium grade is excellent on quad bike chassis protecting against manure and salt, with the added benefit that it stays on.

In the Prolan product range, there is also an anti-seize grease, which is very popular for assembly of components.

A small smear applied to bolts or pins when assembling equipment ensures they can be undone years later. It also minimises parts replacement as these can be removed easier instead of by force which results in breakage if no anti-seize has been applied.

What all of these people have needed, from the horse rider looking for a mobile farrier through to the medieval king sending out for engineers to make his castle impregnable to Vikings, is a mobile workshop. These days there’s not much call for massive fortifications,

as Vikings are fairly thin on the ground.

When the movie industry needs a model castle, or, more prosaically, when the average farmer needs tractor repairs, a new water heater or an electrical fix, they turn to the tradesman’s best friend, the white van. Note that the colour can change according to signwriting and branding, but the definition is as generic

W H O A R E YO U G O I N G T O C A L L ? as ‘sticky tape’. There is a particular type of vehicle, which is purpose-built for western tradespeople to use as a combination office, tea break room, workshop and toolbox.

It all begins with the Ford Transit, the original tradesperson’s van from the 1950s. You’ll see them carrying BBC camera equipment in the background of shows like Monty Python’s Flying Circus.

The truth is, the original comes not from Britain, but Cologne in Germany.

It was not until 1965 that the bulldognosed Transit we all know came into production, and it was initially a hit with crooks and cops rather than builders and plumbers.

Robbers from the ‘old firm’ days when the Kray brothers ruled the London underworld loved how much loot you could pack in the nondescript but lively Transit; the law loved how many constables you could ferry to a fracas in the back. One of these 1960s Transits holds the record for longest service.

It’s still on the road today after going all the way round the clock, a distance comparable to a moon mission, and it belongs to a plumbing firm in (appropriately) Bath, England.

Here in New Zealand, the Transit Van and its opposite number from the Holden and General Motors stable, the venerable Bedford J series, have been transformed into everything from

farming flat decks to ambulances. You can still see Bedford ambulance camper vans at holiday hot spots each summer, next to another mobile workshop on wheels, the ice cream truck. The Japanese and Korean marques have made their mark in recent decades, with the Hiace, L300 and their ilk muscling into a territory where Ford still produces a dominant product.

Nowadays, the farmer or business owner in need of fast response can summon a mobile welder, tyre service, diesel mechanic, or builder with their mobile phone. The man in the van is less likely to get lost along the way thanks to GPS. There have been some big advances in miniaturising the gear, which slides into the back of these highmileage, hard-working vans, meaning that more tools can be powered from a simple inverter and battery array.

Where would we be without the tradesperson’s van? In a world where you can summon up a mobile taxidermist, podiatrist, tattoo artist, dentist or sushi chef, we take it for granted, perhaps, that more prosaic trades such as electricians and painters are out there on four wheels. So next time you see a proud van-driving tradie tucking into a mince and cheese pie by the side of the road on his tea break, reflect with pride on the innovation and hard work that’s put him there.

No so long ago petrol was king when it came to handling outdoor power, and the average tradesperson would carry a can of two-stroke mix everywhere.

Times have changed, and there are now some serious tools which run exclusively off electricity, raising the possibility of charging up a whole array of batteries direct via inverter from the ute or van itself. These are no weak or retiring versions of their petrol counterparts either. Here are three of the best, which are beloved of modern trade professionals, and might be a good match around the farm as well.

Stihl invented the world’s first electric cut off saw specifically for those circumstances where it’s too far to run an extension cable.

Compact and lighter than its petrol opposite number, the TSA 230 can cut tiles to size, bricks for masonry projects, and even comes with an abrasive wheel to slice steel like a roast dinner. Weighing in at 3.9 kilograms, the TSA 230 can cut to a depth of 70mm and keep going continually for up to 15 minutes on a single battery. That’s a quarter hour of powering through stone and steel, which is pretty impressive.

Call the professionals for safety Rural New Zealand is a place, which tends to favour the multi-skilled; after all, there’s so many things to do around the farm or even the rural home that it’s good to develop a wide range of abilities to fix, mend, renew and restore those things that fail due to wear and tear.

The big jobs sometimes require a professional approach, especially when it comes to those tasks that are a bit out of the ordinary. It is doubly true for those that take place off the ground, such as repairing roofing and guttering or taking care of overgrown trees.

According to ACC statistics, the most dangerous thing in the tool shed is not a saw or hammer, but a ladder, with $17 million in injury claims a year recorded from ladder accidents.

That statistic goes up as the age of the ladder user goes up, too; a fact accident analysts put down to the cando attitude of our older generation, who are used to tackling tasks themselves.

Relatively recent changes to the rules about working above a certain height have recognised the perils of falling and of poorly supported surfaces, leading to the requirement for professional tradespeople to erect scaffolding or use a secured harness in many aerial applications.

While prudent, this had also added to the time and cost of undertaking such projects, leading many people to try to go it alone.

This time of year is especially busy when it comes to getting off the ground, with gutters to clean, roof leaks to repair and dead tree limbs to cut down before storms drop them. The overwhelming message from health care providers is

to be careful, assess the situation, and in any doubt as to your equipment and abilities, call the professionals.

The reasoning is clear when a 2006 British study is taken into account. Of 200,000 cases of do-it-yourself injury (in one year, but not the larger population of Great Britain), more than half required time off work, and all, by definition, required a trip to the doctor.

Assuming that due to injury the job was not completed successfully, that’s 200,000 cases where the expense of time off, recuperation, treatment and medication far outstripped the cost of

just picking up the phone and hiring someone who specialises for a living.

This winter, take a long look at those risky, high-up and outdoor jobs, and question if it’s worth it.

Action on M Bovis: a letter to farmers DairyNZ and Beef + Lamb New Zealand met with Minister Damien O’Connor, Minister of Agriculture and Biosecurity recently regarding the important changes to the Mycoplasma bovis eradication programme and together with MPI have issued the following: “We are jointly leading an eradication effort that no other country has attempted. There is no textbook for such a programme, meaning that we are learning every step of the way and need to regularly refine our approaches.

“It is unfortunate that there is currently a backlog of farmers that need to be contacted, and possibly placed under movement restrictions, especially at this time of the farming calendar.

This situation is disappointing, and we understand the pressure that this puts on affected farmers. Our priority now is to get the high-risk properties contacted as soon as possible. Unfortunately, disease eradication impacts on many farms even when the likelihood of disease is extremely low.

“We recognise the significant financial and emotional impact surveillance or restrictions has on the lives of many farmers but remain confident that eradication is viable and worth the effort. We agreed on a plan to strengthen, update and better resource the M bovis programme. We want to share this plan with you as changes are rolled out during the coming weeks.”

A team of more than 30 staff has been established to resource calls to farmers. 111 of the 300 high-risk farms have been contacted, and 56 Notices

of Direction triggered. “We are changing the management and oversight of the M bovis response function. These changes will strengthen MPI’s work at a regional level, starting with Canterbury. It is likely that an additional senior regional operations manager will be appointed with increased ability to resolve local issues quickly.”

There will also be an increased focus on working with industry partners and key groups, including Federated Farmers.

“The day-to-day oversight of the programme requires significant capacity — we have all committed to stepping up to this challenge. We have commissioned an independent industry expert, alongside MPI’s chief science adviser, to deliver a report into the cause and effects of the current surge and identify additional immediate improvements.

We will share the findings with you.”

The Technical Advisory Group will be reconvened ahead of its planned midyear review to review the programme, particularly in light of the current surge, and reassure us that the programme remains on track towards eradication.

In an era when everybody wants to make the next cute, hip, urban-styled micro SUV, one car maker has decided to do things a little differently. Well, it’s the way they’ve been doing it since 1970, when they called their product the LJ (light jeep) 10. You’d know its lineage by another name, especially if you judge an off-roader by its ability rather than its size.

It’s the Suzuki Jimny, and it’s been building a reputation and a niche which few other automakers are willing to challenge, let alone contest for dominance in. Variant names such as Escudo, Samurai and Sierra have come and gone, but still, there are few examples out there of similar machines.

The Jimny still boasts a ladder chassis like a big, beefy Range Rover. It even has true four-wheel drive with locking hubs, like a Land Cruiser, and it still has the footprint of a single tennis shoe. It also looks so cute and fierce that it is elevated to the same level as a new Fiat 500 or Mini. This, the pug dog with wheels.

More seriously, the Suzuki resembles like a tiny version of Mercedes-Benz’s G-Wagon. Suzuki is on a roll right now, with the Ignis crossover already gaining popularity for its off-beat and funky aesthetics. Now comes a shrunk-in-the-wash military Jeep, which if it lives up to its ancestors, will actually do the business off-road where other micro SUVs fear to tread.

Methane reduction unrealistic

Deer Industry New Zealand is disappointed by the government’s announced emissions reduction targets for agriculture.

“Under current conditions, these targets would result in significant reductions in stock numbers.” says chair of Deer Industry New Zealand, Dr Ian Walker.

“Even if tools and technologies were available to reduce methane and nitrous oxide in the future, the level of reduction would effectively mean that the agriculture sector was being asked not just to cease its own contribution to global warming, but also offset the contribution of other sectors.

“The deer industry as part of the pastoral sector is prepared to play its part in climate change mitigation. We do not deny human-induced climate change nor our responsibility to mitigate. The pastoral sector is willing to target net zero global warming impact from agricultural gasses, but the targets for methane announced by the government go beyond net zero global warming impact. DINZ cannot support these targets.

“The rationale for methane to be reduced by anything between 24 per cent and 47 per cent by 2050 has not been made clear to us. We can only assume that the government expects agriculture to make ‘headroom’ for other sectors to continue emitting.”

Dr Walker says this is unfair for the sector, but also a bad choice for New Zealand because in the absence of new mitigation technology. A 47 per cent reduction in agricultural methane emissions will require a 47 per cent

reduction in pastoral farming outputs. That could reduce rural employment and export revenues from meat, milk and fibre by half, or about $12 billion a year.

“The government has expressed no plan for how this employment and export revenue could be replaced and New Zealanders’ living standards maintained.

Reducing agricultural methane emissions is a temporary solution; it buys time but does not address the fundamental cause of climate change, which is the release of fossil carbon into the atmosphere.
