Stoats tracked in rural Taranaki

Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research ecologist holds a sedated stoat after fitting it with a GPS tracking collar

Manaaki Whenua’s Wildlife Ecology and Management team are working together with the Taranaki Regional Council, the Department of Conservation and the Taranaki Mounga Project to research the movements of these mustelids.

Two ecologists and a field technician from Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research in Lincoln travelled to Taranaki to set up traps. Captured stoats were carefully removed from these traps, sedated, and a tracking collar fitted. The stoats were then released.

GPS tracking collars will provide valuable insight into stoat behaviour and movements on rural land. Information collated will also reveal the distance stoats have travelled, habitat, how their young are dispersed, and movements between Egmont National Park and the ring-plain where the Taranaki Mounga Project is operating.

Towards Predator-Free Taranaki project manager Toby Shanley said,

this information would be vital to rid stoats from both rural Taranaki and Taranaki Mounga.

“These predators may look harmless, but stoats are skilled killers responsible for up to 60% of kiwi chick deaths.”

Telemetry methods are used to allow the research team to track the location of collared stoats. The data is then used to follow the stoats’ movements in the area. Field data, combined with computer models, will evaluate whether it is likely stoats inhabiting the ring-plains will move into the Egmont National Park boundaries. Researchers will also find out if stoats move out of the national park onto the ring-plain.

“This research is critical to help us efficiently remove predators in Taranaki, as we work towards New Zealand’s 2050 predator-free goal,” said Mr Shanley.

“The support we’ve had from rural Taranaki landowners to enable this work has been fantastic. They are right behind it.”

Rural sports stars recognised New Zealand’s top rural sporting champions were recognised recently during an evening of glitter and glamour in Palmerston North.

Now into its third year, the Norwood New Zealand Rural Sports Awards gala dinner was held on the eve of the Hilux New Zealand Rural Games. Awards were presented to a diverse range of high-performance rural athletes and people who put in the hard yards behind the scenes.

Chair of the New Zealand Rural Sports Awards judging panel Sir Brian Lochore said there was a fantastic line-up of entrants and finalists for each category.

“The Norwood New Zealand Rural Sports Awards is about celebrating traditional sports and the people who keep events running year-in and yearout in the towns and settlements across New Zealand.”

“Our 2019 winners have proven themselves on the field of their rural sports or in the committee room organising rural sporting events around New Zealand,” said Sir Lochore.

Whanganui teenager Bradley McDowell was presented with the Fonterra Young New Zealand Rural Sportsperson of the Year.

Bradley began cowboy action shooting at 12 years of age and was New Zealand’s junior champion four years in a row. He is currently the New Zealand North Island overall men’s champion and the New Zealand overall men’s champion. His achievements have extended to international titles too. Bradley is the current Wyoming State junior champion, the 2018 World junior champion and he also won the

Woolhandler, Pagan Karauria of Alexandra won the Skellerup New Zealand Rural Sportswoman of the Year. The Levno Contribution to the New Zealand Rural Sports Industry Award went to David James of Blenheim.

David is a respected tree climbing competition judge and assists with

the organisation of many contests.

At 78, a former winner of the Golden Shears Intermediate shearing title and competition judge, Hugh McCarroll of Whangamata, was the oldest finalist winning the Toyota Lifetime Legacy Award. The Allflex Sir Brian Lochore Outstanding Sportsperson from a Rural Background was won by current Black Ferns Sevens captain Sarah Hirini (nee Goss) of Mount Maunganui.

RIDING FOR A CAUSE UN

Riding through unfamiliar territory, and finding a place to camp each night, are just some of the challenges facing Larissa Mueller as she continues on her trek around the North Island’s coastline.

arissa and her two horses, Sprite and Popeye, headed north from Wellington in February, travelling along the west coast. She and a friend, Kendall, completed the South Island leg of the journey in 2016.

The 31-year-old bought her first horse six years ago. Previously she had only occasionally ridden a friend’s pony and had a few riding lessons when her family lived in Germany.

“I’ve still only ridden a handful of horses to this day, and I am a nervous rider,” said Larissa.

“I am only confident doing this trek alone because I have my unicorn Sprite with me, who I trust with my life.”

Sprite is a nine-year-old Stationbred mare previously used for one season of mustering on a sheep station before Larissa bought her.

“She had never been off the station, but she took highways, towns, playground and beaches in her stride within her first week, and has been my rock ever since.”

“He lost his right eye in a paddock accident at two years but has adapted well. He is still green and has recently had his first proper rides under saddle during the trek.” Popeye’s main job is to be ponied along and keep Sprite company. He is also a second riding horse for people Larissa invites for sections of the ride.

“I wanted to have Popeye along to give people a chance to meet and value a Kaimanawa,” said Larissa.

“Also to inspire kids that they can do big things like Popeye can despite any challenges they might have.”

Larissa always dreamed of completing a long journey on horseback.

She said it was through chatting with Kendall that the idea to ride the circumference of New Zealand came about.

A year after starting to prepare for the journey, the pair came across the Leg-Up Trust and decided to raise funds as they trekked. The trust, based in Hastings, teaches disadvantaged youth to engage and interact positively with horses. This form of equine therapy teaches young people how to build a relationship with a horse through grooming, feeding and general care.

“One of the most touching donations happened when we were walking through a winding, narrow section of road on the west coast. Someone must have passed us and wanted to donate but couldn’t stop safely. As we got to the bottom of

the hill, we found a little pile of coins left on the white line on the side of the road, with a note saying ‘donation’.”

There have been numerous challenges and highlights throughout the journey.

The trek has covered land that few people get to access. “We’ve camped in secluded bays and the middle of towns, and seen New Zealand in a different way to most.

“It is something I’ll always treasure.”

Larissa said the journey has restored her faith in humanity.

“People have been so generous to us and taken care of us, and our horses, so well.”

Although Larissa doesn’t have an exact route planned out, she aims to follow the coastline whenever possible.

She plans up to a week ahead, talks to the locals and studies maps as she travels. It is hoped the North Island leg of the trek will be completed within a year.

“I’ll continue until it’s done and it has to be flexible to allow for anything that could happen.”

After packing up and weighing saddlebags to ensure they are equalised, Larissa aims to leave camp around 9am for each day’s trek. The finishing point depends on the difficulty of the terrain covered that day. She frequently stops to allow the horses to graze.

“My goal every day is to find the horses a paddock to stay in so they can relax properly. I’ll camp anywhere I can but sometimes I’m lucky to be given a woolshed or spare room to sleep in, and a good feed is an extra bonus.

“On the South Island trek, there were only a handful of times where we didn’t find a paddock and carried a small amount of fence tape, which we strung

Larissa frequently stops during the day to give the horses opportunities to graze and rest around trees for overnight grazing. We didn’t sleep very well those nights, and the horses did break out one time.”

Larissa’s adventures can be followed on her Facebook page homefree. “New Zealand is our support crew, and I’ll spend the rest of my life paying it forward,” she said.

“We have been privileged to be invited into so many households and gone away with many new friends around the country.”

Newly-weds Max and Andrea Hoegh’s love for New Zealand’s wildlife and plants saw them spending their honeymoon working to eradicate possums.

Now the couple is working on the next step of the trapping operation.

ax grew up on an Iowa farm in the United States and began trapping pest species from a young age. He’s also been a keen hunter since he was six years old.

Andrea grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

“I was a city girl and got into the hunting and trapping scene through Max,” she said.

They met while paddling on a vaka in Rarotonga and moved to New Zealand in 2015. Max and Andrea run their own business, Hoegh Hunting, possum trapping for commercial fur in between contracts.

“Two years ago Max was teaching at South Otago High School, and I was working for Kiwibank,” said Andrea.

“We enjoyed possum trapping and hunting, so we quit our jobs and bought a camper to become full-time hunters.

We knew when we started we would have to go to the work, so we travelled a lot. It was a priority for us to be able to get anywhere we could. That is why we choose to use a camper so much.”

Hunting also specialises in working with indicating dogs to hunt and trap pests.

“Our aim is to develop the best hunting dogs we can,” said Max. “We love working with our dogs.

When we are training dogs, we take them bowhunting.”

The couple has found bowhunting to be excellent training for the dogs as it closes the gap between the hunter and the animal.

“The hunts last longer, and it means there is more repetition for the dogs, making them better hunters,” said Max. Andrea said their first dog was a German Shorthaired Pointer.

“We have one Dachshund trained up specifically for possums and a second one on the way.”

Max and Andrea are open to growing their business but are more passionate about hunting than running a business.

“It’s an incredible lifestyle, and we enjoy working with our dogs in the field.”

In October last year, the couple began working on a contract basis for the Taranaki Regional Council as part of Towards Predator-free Taranaki. They’ve trapped more than 250 possums in the Oakura area since then.

“We just love the native wildlife and plants here so much, we couldn’t think of a better place to be,” said Max. They’ve been working in the zero possum area together with Oakura locals, community groups, Taranaki Mounga Project and Taranaki Regional Council, as part of the project. After their recent marriage in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the couple returned to Oakura.

“I’m really happy to be back in Oakura, we just love it here, and it’s going to be even better if we can eradicate possums,” said Max. Whenever the pair receives a suspected possum report, they visit the area to assess it and then set a live trap. Traps are set with the safety of any children and pets in mind.

Their work is considered critical to helping restore the area’s biodiversity, allowing native birds like kaka and kiwi to return to the area, by eradicating possums. Possums are notorious for feasting on native plants, birds and their eggs. Max said Oakura has already been tainted by the possums.

“I can’t look at a piece of bush now, or a panoramic view of Oakura’s stunning coastline, without thinking of all the potential possum habitat.”

“It’s ruined the view, a little bit, but that’s ok. I’m happy helping residents restore Kaitake by making it possumfree,” he said.

The next part of the Hoegh’s contract is to trap possums in the town of Oakura and the rural block west of Timaru Stream.

They then hope to continue in other areas with the Towards Predator-free Taranaki project.

Andrea encourages residents in the Oakura and surrounding areas to call 0800 736 222 if they see, hear or suspect a possum.

“We would like to thank the local community for all the help and possum reports they have provided so far,” said Andrea. “We are really enjoying

Helping arthritic joints (Part 2)

Many who contact me with joint problems have already tried joint health supplements with little or no success. We make what appear to be minor changes in dosages, and within a few months, most have significant benefits.

Most joint supplements are heavily weighted towards glucosamine sulphate (GS). The reasons are that some of the original research into supplements that can help joints was mostly focussed on glucosamine.

A second reason could be that glucosamine is relatively inexpensive.

Older style formulations typically have something like a 4:1 ratio of GS to chondroitin sulphate (CS). The most recent research shows that the most effective compound is chondroitin, but glucosamine is also important.

I started experimenting with different ratios of GS to CS. I found that a 1:1 ratio had a significant impact on joint health. I later began to review the scientific literature and found there were many studies on the benefits of CS. It is also worth noting that CS is available as a prescription medication in more than 20 countries including Europe.

On the basis of this research, I reformulated my joint supplement that

a daily dose has 800mg of CS, 800 of GS and 200mg of a 95% curcumin (from turmeric) extract. In most cases, I start people on a double dose delivery 1,600 mg of CS and GS and 400mg of 95% curcumin.

Scientific evidence is helpful in the understanding of disease processes.

However, the real test is to whether something actually helps people.

I spoke to a client yesterday who experienced significant improvements in her thumbs and knee after only eight weeks on higher doses.

Forestry feedback sought People are encouraged to give their input on the government’s proposal to reform vocational education could undermine the success of training and apprenticeships at a time of critical skills shortages in forestry.

Industr y training organisation Competenz is encouraging the forestry industry to provide feedback on the plan, which includes replacing all 16 polytechs with a new national organisation called the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology, which would be responsible for delivering all on-job and off-job training.

Industry-owned ITOs like Competenz would no longer exist; they would no longer arrange training or support the learning and assessment of apprentices and trainees in the workplace.

“Competenz is concerned that employers’ ability to influence how their programmes are delivered will become less flexible and unable to be adapted to individual workplaces under a centralised model,” says chief executive Fiona Kingsford.

“The changes the government has proposed are more complex and far-

reaching than we expected. There is no doubt the system needs modification, and funding needs to be realigned to deliver what our industries need, but these changes are too radical.

“In a time of critical skills shortages, the last thing we want is a reform that risks undermining workplace training and apprenticeship programmes. Yes the system needs reform and yes we need to address the funding inequalities, but in our opinion, these changes are not the way to do it.”

Mrs Kingsford says Competenz currently looks after 20,000 trainees and apprentices across 3,500 New Zealand businesses. The direct relationship between ITOs and employers is a key factor in the success of training and apprenticeships.

Build your lifestyle Building your own home There are laws you need to comply with when you are building whether you are hiring a builder or doing the work yourself.

If you want to build your own house and you are not a licensed builder, you have to get an owner-builder exemption.

Ask the council for information they have about your property they can tell you about local and regional plans, and how they might impact on your project.

You might need to apply for resource consent or other permits specific to your area.

The more you know, the better prepared you will be, your plans will be better informed, and you might save time and money by making a good building consent application. You could also avoid the need to make last minute changes or costly amendments during construction.

Building on an empty section is more complicated than altering or renovating an existing house.

Timeframes and costs

Building or renovating a home can be a complicated task, and it is recommended before purchasing a section to build a new home on, you should research the section and consider how its location could affect building costs.

Most new builds come with plans and are pre-priced with all costs included, double check before starting that this is the case and there are no hidden costs. Ask who is liable for extras if the builders do not do their job correctly as you do not want to be charged for their mistakes or slack workmanship.

Ask the right questions and make sure your tradesperson isn’t telling you what they think you want to hear. Check your timeframes and budget are realistic and that what you want to be done is possible for your house.

Verify any potential contractors’ references and if they have done similar projects before and if they can start and finish when they say they can. Ask what other jobs they are working on at present and have clarification of who will be doing the work; themselves or an apprentice or subcontractor.

Make sure the brief is clear and meet with your tradies to discuss the details of the brief. Ideally, have a document everyone can refer to throughout the project, and update it when things

change. Make sure everyone has a clear understanding of the required level of quality and finish, who is responsible for what and the contract terms.

Be as detailed as you can be from the start and specify things like where lights and powerpoints should go, list all the different appliances and confirm with your main contractor who needs to do what for each item. Confirm as much as you can before work starts, and make sure that anything that is important to you or that involves a lot of money is in writing.

Missing information can cost, for example, if a kitchen renovation goes over budget because you haven’t confirmed with the main contractor at the outset, that you need an instant hot water tap installed and additional outdoor light.

Put such requests in writing to be included in the quote.

Once the job is finished, check you are given you all the paperwork and warranties relating to the work. Keep any certificates such as energy work

Renovating your home If you are renovating, it is essential to ensure you use licensed tradespeople and get consents where you need to complete your project and make sure it is legally compliant and acceptable.

When renovating or doing work on your home, the more you think about upfront, the better it is likely to go. There is a lot to check and consider before you commence your project and start hiring designers or contractors, and accept contracts or quotes.

What lies beneath Some rural buildings that may have started life in pioneer days may by now need the foundations revisited because over time piles can move and deteriorate, causing them to fail.

If the house was built in an era that used totara piles, an examination would determine if repiling has happened. New piles are either concrete or tanalised (H5) pine and are easy to spot. Make sure to check out that all the piles have been replaced. It is quite common that only a few piles are new, often just around the edge of the house.

Sometimes all the piles move, but more often different piles move to different extents. It causes the house to twist, bow and crack, resulting in damage. The piles may have stopped moving or may be continuing to move.

It all depends on the cause.

If you are planning renovations, it pays to start with firm foundations or you are going to end up with an inferior result.

That involves digging new piles down to a firm base and attempting to realign the house on this new foundation. To establish if there is a problem and to what extent, ask the experts. A house inspector is a good start. Repiling is a major job, and different repilers use

different methods. Some cut holes in the floor for access under the house, and some lift the entire building on jacks to make room to work.

Ensure you have a building permit, other additions and changes to the house can be added to the same permit, so it pays to make plans in advance and discuss with council what permits and consents you need before starting any project.

When doing other alterations to older homes, it is best to note that between the 1940s and the 1990s lots of building materials in New Zealand contained asbestos. Asbestos that’s in good condition, sealed or won’t be disturbed is relatively safe, but it can cause serious health problems if it’s damaged or you intend to drill, sand or break it.

It is almost impossible to identify asbestos by eye. The product can be found in houses, roof tiles, old panel type fences, sheds and cowshed material to name a few and is a

significant health hazard. You are not allowed to remove or drill into it. If you think or know your house or building contains asbestos, talk to a professional asbestos removal company before you begin any building work. Removing and disposal need to be done by a licensed asbestos removal licence holder under the 2016 regulations. There are two

Online training for myrtle rust

Biosecurity New Zealand and the Department of Conservation have launched an online training programme to help New Zealanders identify suspected myrtle rust infections in their backyards.

The plant fungus can be hard to identify without training and can look different during seasonal changes. The new online training modules provide resources to understand the fungus and its symptoms better.

“The courses are available to everyone and cover how it spreads, what to do if you find it and climatic factors that influence myrtle rust,” says Biosecurity New Zealand’s manager for recovery and pest management, John

Sanson. The courses provide guidance for people that are interested in learning more about myrtle rust in New Zealand.

DOC and Biosecurity New Zealand have also developed a new website as a central place to house resources and information myrtlerust.org.nz.

“We are trying to understand the spread of the disease so are asking staff and the public to keep an eye out for myrtle rust over the autumn months,” Mr Sanson says.

New Zealand’s precious native myrtle plants including pohutukawa, rata, manuka, kanuka and ramarama are vulnerable to the disease.

The fungus, which is mainly spread by wind, generally infects shoots, buds, and young leaves of myrtle plants.

Infected plants show typical symptoms including bright yellow powdery spots on the underside of leaves but can also show other symptoms such as grey powdery spots during the cooler months.

DOC’s project manager for myrtle rust, Fiona Thomson, says the website

is an excellent tool for the public to learn what myrtle plants look like, how to spot myrtle rust and what to do when you find infected plants.

“The more eyes looking out for myrtle rust, the better we can monitor this disease and protect our precious myrtles,” says Dr Thomson.

If you think you see symptoms of myrtle rust, especially in areas where it has not yet been found, remember not to touch the plant or collect samples, but take pictures and report it to Biosecurity New Zealand’s Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline on 0800 80 99 66.

Taranaki Dairy Industry Awards Jacob and Leah Prankerd were named the 2019 Taranaki Share Farmers of the Year at the region’s annual awards.

The couple says that entering the competition enabled them to gain a deeper understanding of their business.

“It also enabled us to strengthen our industry network by getting to know others in the industry and our rural professionals,” they say.

The 2019 Taranaki Dairy Manager of the Year is Kenneth Harrison, and Marshall Jane took out the 2019 Taranaki Dairy Trainee of the Year title.

Kenneth is currently herd manager for Ian and Judith Armstrong, on their 539ha, 1,000-cow Opunake property. He believes the strengths of the business lies in teamwork.

“Every member of the team is on board with trying to reach our farm goals. We also look out for one another, be it farm-related or otherwise,” said Kenneth.

Marshall Jane is a shed manager on Christine Good’s 222ha, 750-cow farm in Otakeho and says the awards helped him realise where he needed to focus on to become a better trainee and to identify his goals and plan to achieve them. Runner-up in the Taranaki Share Farmer of the Year was Sophie Parker and Matt Thomas. The Oakura 50/50 Sharemilkers work on Norton and Coral Moller’s Oakura Farms Limited 84ha property, milking 280 cows.

A trained beauty therapist and make-up artist is competing to be the next FMG Young Farmer of the Year.

Sarah Meurk will go up against six men in the Taranaki/Manawatu regional final in Whanganui in April. The Marton Young Farmers member lives on a lifestyle block in Hunterville with her husband and their daughter.

“I am super excited. It has always been my goal to make it into a regional final,” she said.

by Feilding High School. The property runs sheep and beef and milks 60 cows through a robotic dairy. She is also a freelance make-up artist and was previously a tutor for a governmentfunded programme getting teenagers engaged in education. She will go headto-head with fellow club mate James Beattie who is also inspiring the next generation of agri-food producers.

“I tutor agriculture to years 11 to 12 students at Taihape Area School one day a week.

“It will be my first time competing in a regional final, and I am stoked to have made it through,” he said.

James has a bachelor of agricultural science from Massey University and has worked on a 1,500 cow dairy farm in the United States. He is a block manager on

an operation that winters 8,500 stock units, including 150–200 hinds and 100 does, and approximately 70 hectares of crops are planted annually.

The other five regional finalists are Alex Field, Ashton Coates, Ben Orchard, Blair Briscoe and Graham Johnson.

Ashton is a shepherd and works across two farms, which total 1,600 hectares, run 6,500 ewes and 600 Ezicalve Hereford breeding cows.

Ben is a two-time world archery champion with an unrivalled aim and is in his third year studying a bachelor of agricommerce majoring in farm management at Massey University.

Blair is a qualified builder and contract milks 430 cows near Inglewood in Taranaki and Graham is a thirdyear agricultural science student at Massey University.

The hotly-contested Taranaki/ Manawatu regional final is being held on April 6. Contestants will tackle a series of gruelling practical and theoretical modules at Cooks Gardens in Whanganui.

The winner of the regional final will represent the region at the FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final in Hawke’s Bay in July.
