Massey University third-year vet students recently launched their annual Barely There calendar

Massey University third-year vet students launched their annual Barely There calendar recently with proceeds to go towards their half-year trip and the New Zealand Wildlife Health Centre at the university’s teaching hospital The calendar, which dates from July 2012 — June 2013, features around 70 vet students, posing nude or semi-nude in agricultural settings with strategicallyplaced animals or objects to cover up private parts.

Four photographers were appointed to take photos at several locations which included a shearing shed, alpaca and pig farms, riding stables, netball courts, the Manawatu Gorge, Staglands Wildlife Reserve near Wellington, a Belgian Blue farm in Hawke’s Bay and the Tui Brewery at Mangatinoka.

Third year vet student Abby Sine said students undertake practical work on farms in the area early on in the vet programme.

“A lot of the photo-shoot locations were a result of contacts that students had with local farmers.”

The calendar concept was initiated seven years ago as a fundraiser and celebration for students reaching the half-way point in pursuit of a veterinary degree.

The front cover of this year’s calendar is an ancient Olympics theme and includes a link to the 2012 Olympics.

Ms Sine said students began talking about the theme of the calendar late last year and voted on it.

“We went with an ancient Olympics idea and everyone turned up in the most amazing body paint and costumes for the group cover shot.”

She said students found posing for the calendar to be a mixture of nerves

“I think people were pretty nervous but once they got over the initial shock of being naked, they started to relax and have fun.”

Every year 10 percent of proceeds from calendar sales are donated to a chosen charity.

This year the New Zealand Wildlife Health Centre (NZWHC), where sick and injured wildlife are treated, will be the recipient. The centre also aids in the recovery of New Zealand’s native birds and are the first responders to oil spill scenes like the recent Rena disaster.

“Usually a little extra is thrown in as well, so the more calendars we sell, the more we can help support a fantastic organisation such as NZWHC,” said Ms Sine.

Last year’s calendar sales raised over $3,000 for SPCA Canterbury.

Passion for fruit

Gavin and Sue Stilwell grew kumara in Northland for 20 years before making the move south to Taranaki

F

our years ago, the couple sold their Northland farm and initially started to look at properties in the Bay of Plenty region.

“We couldn’t find what we wanted,” said Sue. “Then we visited friends who had just purchased property in north Taranaki and found this one for sale.”

The couple researched the climate, soil type and fertility of the area

before deciding the farm had potential for further horticultural investment.

The 360-acre farm already had 850 avocado trees planted on it and the Stilwell’s have added one acre of passionfruit and around three acres in kumara.

Eighty acres of the farm is in QE2 Trust and the balance of the acreage is leased to the neighbouring dairy farmer for grazing.

“We knew it could be a quick cash crop to give us some income to live on while we established the passionfruit orchard,” said Sue. “We have only planted three or four acres of kumara each season as we didn’t want to have to employ a lot of staff.”

Deep, fertile volcanic ash covers the property and a micro-climate lifts the temperature up to three degrees warmer than New Plymouth city. The property is also virtually frost free but is exposed to the wind.

“To plant the kumara and passionfruit, we only had to remove some avocado trees and do some drainage and levelling,” said Gavin.

“Over the last few years we had decided that we wanted to have a go at growing passionfruit, even though it had the reputation of being a high risk but possible high return crop.”

Both Gavin and Sue work full-time on the farm with each of them having a specific area of responsibility.

Are your joints complaining?

Joints are any part of the body where 2 or more bones meet. The main types of joints are the fibrous joints such as tooth sockets, those solely of cartilage such as vertebrae discs and thirdly the mobile synovial joints such as knees and shoulders. The most common problems that affect joints are accidental damage especially to these mobile joints, all forms of arthritis and specific problems with joint structures such as bursitis and tendonitis.

Our knees and shoulders are incredibly complex synovial joints. Have a look at an anatomical image of a shoulder joint and you will see what I mean. There are tendons attached to bones, tendon sheaths to allow tendon movement, joint cavities with synovial fluid, little bags of lubricant called bursars and of course the cartilage covering the bones. All of these structures can cause problems including arthritis, bursitis and tendonitis.

Osteoarthritis is the progressive loss of the cartilage that covers the ends of bones. The pain is as much caused by inflammation as the actual loss of cartilage. While there is obviously some wear and tear aspect to the disease the latest research suggests that this is a true disease process rather than just accumulated wear.

Research in the last decade by K. Yudoh et al (2005) and C. Ziskoven et al (2010) indicates that the real cause may oxidative stress which then triggers inflammation. This concludes that free radicals damage the chondrocyte cells that make and support cartilage. If these cells are damaged and die this results in the erosion of cartilage. In other words osteoarthritis is much more like iron rusting away in the salt air.

My approach to osteoarthritis is now based on this latest research and my own observations over many years. I take a “3 legged stool” approach. Firstly we add a range of antioxidants to combat the free radicals attacking joint cells.

Secondly we add a range of anti-inflammatory compounds including Omega 3 and a number of plant based antiinflammatory compounds and thirdly specific amounts of joint supporting compounds such as Glucosamine and MSM. It is very important to get personalised and monitored advice because different joints respond to different doses of different compounds and of course everyone is different.

Breed makes its mark

ast Friesian sheep are considered to be one of the world’s highest milk-producing breeds and are commonly used purely as a milking breed in Europe. When crossed with other sheep meat breeds, the East Friesian is also well-known for their high fertility.

Eleven pregnant East Friesian ewes and four rams were imported to New Zealand from Sweden in 1992 and placed into quarantine at Silverstream near Dunedin.

A breeding programme at the quarantine station began using embryo transfer techniques and the derivatives were sold.

Four years later 40 rams were sold along with extensive sales of semen.

of sheep, beef and crops near Rongotea.

Paul is a fourth-generation farmer on the property.

The couple initially trialled around 50 direct East Friesian embryo transfers into their Romney ewes.

Paul said they were looking to improve milk production from their ewes, increase lambing percentages and raise lamb growth rates.

“We were also keen on the sheep milking side of it,” said Debbie.

Shortly afterwards the couple bought an East Friesian ram from Silverstream, in partnership with Mark Collis, to put back over the resulting ewe progeny.

Several Romney/Coopworth ewes in lamb to an East Friesian ram were also purchased.

The six couples belonging to the group began to supply milk to a company in Auckland for ice-cream production.

Milk was also sourced from an experimental East Friesian flock at Flock House Agricultural Centre near Bulls.

Sheep milk has been found to be a good alternative to cow’s milk for those people who suffer from lactose intolerance. It is also known to have a calming effect on eczema.

Unfortunately the Rangitikei Sheep Milking Group was unable to supply a steady quantity of milk and the group disbanded.

“It just wasn’t viable at the time,” said Debbie.

Paul and Debbie continued with their East Friesian breeding programme putting a terminal sire back over East Friesian/Romney ewes.

Paul said they’ve found the breed produced a lot of lambs and rear them well.

“They are particularly good for the dam side but not so suitable on the terminal lamb side.”

The couple have also found that as the East Friesian is a late maturing, larger framed sheep, they haven’t been able to run as many on their property.

“The stocking rate drops a bit,” said Paul.

Along with the breed’s high fertility rates, the East Friesian generally has a sound udder and teat placement.

One of the breed’s most distinctive physical features — its thin tail without wool and bare area around the back end — means the sheep tends to stay clean.

“No docking is required on the purebreds and fly strike is very rare,” said Paul.

The Henson’s breeding operation has continued to be a family affair over the years with the couple’s three children, Hannah, Bridget and Tom, successfully showing purebred East Friesian lambs at local agricultural shows and their school’s lamb and calf days.

The lambs eventually join the East Friesian flock and the couple now run 60 purebred East Friesians and 2,500 crossbreds.

Trail bike ride brings rural community together

PLENTY of jumps, bumps, sand and mud are promised during a Manawatu trail bike ride in the Oroua Downs area on June 17 The ride, jointly organised by Oroua Downs School and Foxton Rotary, will cover a 40km loop track over farmland, pine plantations and around Lake Kaikokopu and Pukepuke Lagoon. Several farmers in the Oroua Downs area have offered the use of their properties for the event.

Oroua Downs School principal Richard Lloyd said the role the farmers play is the backbone of the event.

“Without the support of the farmers and their willingness to open their land to others, events like our one simply couldn’t happen.”

“It really is generous,” said Mr Lloyd.

Volunteers have spent several weekends preparing the course in the lead

up to the event and others will help out on the day.

Mr Lloyd said volunteers are crucial to the event.

“An event of this size requires a number of people willing to give up their time to make sure the riders have the best possible experience.

Previous Oroua Downs trail bike rides have drawn riders from as far as Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay, Wellington and Taupo.

An entry fee of $30 covers the ride and

a lunch. A mini track at a cost of $15 is also available for younger riders.

Funds raised are split between Oroua Downs School and Foxton Rotary.

Mr Lloyd said money raised in the past has gone to specific resources for the school’s pupils including quality reading material and more recently notebooks.

Foxton Rotary spokesperson Bruce Jack said the Rotary club links up with the school for the trail bike ride and the event brings the community together.

“Money raised goes straight back to the community,” said Mr Jack.

Riders need to assemble at Oroua Downs School in Lake Road, just off SH1 between Sanson and Foxton, from 8am onwards to enter. The ride starts at 10am.

“It wouldn’t happen without the generosity of the farmers,” said Mr Jack.

New electric MTV range takes market by storm Bad Boy Mowers and MTVs have taken the world of multi-terrain vehicles by storm with a new range of electric 4 x 4 off-road vehicles.

Taranaki effluent pond ticks all the boxes

In a competition thought to be a world’s first, a Taranaki dairy farm’s effluent pond has been recognised in DairyNZ’s Prize Pond Awards Prize Pond chief judge and DairyNZ’s development project manager for effluent, Theresa Wilson, said competition entries were received from all over New Zealand.

“We were surprised with how interested farmers were in the competition as taking a photo of an effluent pond and sending it in to be judged takes guts.”

“The panel looked at the photos on their merits to see if the pond was low and had storage capacity, and if the clay or synthetic liner was well-maintained,” said Dr Wilson.

Judges also looked at whether effluent was crusting on top, major cracks in clay liners and maintenance of weed growth around the ponds.

The award-winning pond on Ken and Christine Sole’s farm near Opunake was completed in March this year.

and Shelley Moselen have just completed their first season on the farm, milking 530 Friesian/Jersey cross cows on a total milking area of 200 hectares.

Shelley said the pond is compliant with the Taranaki Regional Council and to Fonterra standards and the pond’s large storage capacity enables them to irrigate the farm throughout the dry months of the year. An effluent spreader is used for application.

“We save money on fertiliser costs as we don’t have to fertilise the irrigated paddocks.”

“The effluent is an excellent natural form of fertiliser,” she said.

With a well-managed pond, the couple are also able to go away for a weekend without worrying about the effluent.

Pre-calving teat spraying made easy with Portable Teat Sprayer High concentrations of Streptococcus uberis are found in the environment in the colder pre-calving months It has been proven that ensuring optimum teat and udder health before calving can reduce post-calving infections caused by S.uberis, particularly in heifers during early lactation.

Pre-calving measures available to the dairy farmer for prevention of S.uberis infections include dry cow therapy, teat sealing, or teat spraying. Dry cow therapy/teat sealing can be ineffective or even contribute to the problem if not done correctly. Teat spraying has been proven to reduce heifer mastitis cases by up to 50% in the first three weeks of lactation if done three times a week for the three weeks prior to calving. Effective teat spraying is difficult to achieve when the herd are grazed off-farm at locations which have limited facilities.

WETiT Teat Sprayers have developed a portable system to effectively apply emollient and a sanitising solution to the udder, offering a low-cost, drug-free solution that can be done with no or minimal labour input. Globigen is made by vaccinating high health status flocks against a specific pathogen. The hen then passes maternal immunoglobulins from serum to the egg yolk which is collected, then spray-dried, heattreated and standardized to a determined IgY titre. This is then formulated into a Rotagen combination product by Vetpak here in NZ. Any Rotagen combination of the above IgY’s can be produced on request to meet a specific challenge.

IgY antibodies provide a passive immunity effect in the gut in the same way bovine colostrum would. Studies show that IgY’s successfully pass through the gastro -intestinal tract in an active form and are not altered by the digestive process. Their ability to bind to antigens is maintained within the local gut.

A recent addition to the range is Rotagen Crypto, a cryptosporidium specific treatment for calves.

Approved by the ACVM as an aid in the prevention and treatment of calf scours caused by cryptosporidium, this is available as a stand-alone product without the addition of rotavirus. This is particularly useful in cases where the herd has been vaccinated for rotavirus, but the farm has a history of cryptosporidium parvum scours in their calves.

Calves of any age or weight can be treated at the same dosage rate. For prevention, the recommended dose is 10 grams per calf per day for five days. For treatment, dose calves with 10 g twice daily for the first day, then 5 g twice daily for three to seven days.

Appropriate rehydration is essential and Rotagen can be used in conjunction with electrolytes or milk feeding.

Potential Solutions: • A security interest may exist in relation to borrowing, leasing of goods, and sale and purchase of goods on credit.

• You can register a security interest online. It costs $3.07.

Registration can be the difference between realising and losing your interest in goods.

The date of a security interest is usually irrelevant to priority between creditors. The date of registration is all important.

• When taking security over specific goods, ensure that the debtor and goods are adequately described, and that registration takes place within 10 days of the debtor receiving the goods, failing which the general security holder may take priority.
