The council’s long-running riparian management programme is a successful collaboration with local farmers. It’s also one of the world’s largest restorative freshwater programmes supporting native habitats and improved ecological health. The $100 million programme is primarily landowner funded.

Since the early 1990s, Taranaki Regional Council has worked with farmers, rural residents and community groups to transform the region’s landscape. Through this partnership, the council has developed individualised riparian management plans and supplied up to 500,000 native plants to planholders at cost each year. More than 15,400 kilometres of streambanks are covered by the voluntary programme.

Now in its sixth year, the awards recognise and celebrate the key leadership role local government plays within communities around the country.

Taranaki Regional Council is a finalist in the excellence award for Environmental Wellbeing for the Riparian Management Programme. The award criteria are for a project that enhances the environmental wellbeing of its community; demonstrates a sustainable process, with durable results; and makes significant improvements in health and safety.

The judges praised the programme as “a long-standing initiative with proven

success”. LGNZ president Dave Cull said being named as a finalist is a significant achievement and reflects strong leadership and the innovative work being delivered by councils across the country.

“These excellence awards demonstrate the value local government provides to community, economic development, infrastructure and the environment,” said Mr Cull.

“The sector should be incredibly proud of its achievements as we celebrate these outstanding projects.

“The finalist projects are real examples of how local government delivers exemplary value and services to New Zealanders in a collaborative and inclusive way.”

The other environmental category finalists are Hamilton City Council for installing 13,000 customised LED street lights, and Thames-Coromandel District Council for its network of fastcharging stations that puts the entire district within range of electric vehicles.

Judges for the awards are former Wellington mayor Dame Kerr y Prendergast, distinguished diplomat and public servant Sir Maarten Wevers and New Zealand Initiative executive director Dr Oliver Hartwich.

Category winners will be announced at a gala dinner during the LGNZ Conference in Wellington on July 8.

Oakura couple protect patch of paradise

Experiencing abundant birdlife during visits to several predator-free environments has prompted Oakura locals, Clive Saleman and Libby Baker, to help bring predator numbers down in their community.

Three years ago, the couple visited Ulva Island off Stewart Island. “The forest floor was covered in seedlings, and there were birds everywhere,” said Clive.

“Wood pigeons and New Zealand robins were happily feeding on the path around our feet. Saddlebacks hopped and flitted nearly, and countless bellbirds, kaka and tui were singing all around.

“What helped get it to this stage were the networks of traps everywhere on the island, all maintained by volunteers for years. Now they are down to catching one rat per year.”

Since that trip, Clive and Libby have visited Tiritiri Matangi in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf and Taranaki’s own Lake Rotokare. Libby has also spent a night on Kapiti Island, located five kilometres offshore from Paraparaumu.

“I loved sleeping in a tent, listening to the noises of the nocturnal birdlife,” said Libby.

With the start of Towards PredatorFree Taranaki and then the active local Restore Oakura group, Clive and Libby knew they wanted to get involved in helping bring predator numbers down in their community.

“People stop and ask us how it is going — they are really interested,” said Clive.

“A lot already have traps, and others ask how they can get them. When we get home, Libby logs the catch onto the trap.nz website.”

Towards Predator-Free Taranaki project manager Toby Shanley said, the great work by Clive and Libby is making a positive impact.

“Since they began checking traps along the walkway earlier this year, they’ve caught 25 rats and 11 mice. They are our local heroes, and it is a positive step for our native flora and fauna,” he said.

“We check weekly, and we find that most of the peanut butter bait is gone, even when nothing is caught,” said Clive.

radley’s introduction to the sport began when a close family friend, Ross Clark, invited him and his father Shaun out to a rifle range.

“When Bradley had his first go of the shotgun, he was so well-balanced, and Ross told him he was a natural,” said Shaun.

“Ross saw potential in him so went about teaching him all he could about all aspects of the sport, and most importantly, safety.”

Six months later Shaun took Bradley to his first major competition. “Bradley did very well. A lot of shooters said he

could go all the way and might one day become a New Zealand champion.”

The sport of cowboy action shooting originated in California during the early 1980s, and the first world championships were held in 1987.

Worldwide there are now between 100,000–200,000 cowboy action shooters from 18 countries.

Pistols, lever-action rifles and sideby-side shotguns, all based on late 1800s designs, are used during the competitions.

predetermined, memorised procedure with three different types of guns; pistols, shotguns and rifles — an event called a course of fire.

The aim is to complete a series of targets as fast as possible.

Competitors must wear old western style clothing and use an alias.

Bradley competes under the alias ‘Kiwi Rooster’. Five years ago he won the New Zealand Junior Champion Cowboy Action Shooting title and held it for the next three years.

In 2016 he competed in the world championship in New Mexico finishing seventh in his category.

Back in New Zealand, Bradley progressed up the ranks. In 2017 he achieved his goal of becoming New Zealand’s best shooter at the national championships at his home club of Wanganui. While travelling to another competition, Bradley learned that his friend, Ross Clark, had suddenly passed away. Shaun says the event hardened Bradley’s determination to win a world title to recognise his mentor. A few months later he travelled back to the USA with a large Kiwi contingent to shoot at a few stateside matches before going on to the world championships.

“He won his category at all of those matches also winning the Wyoming State Championships junior title, before travelling on to the main event, which saw him announced as the Junior World

At just 16 years of age, Bradley is New Zealand’s youngest world title holder for the sport.

Bradley’s achievements were recognised earlier this year when he won the Fonterra Young New Zealand Sportsperson of the Year award. His win was announced during the Norwood New Zealand Rural Sports Awards gala dinner, held on the eve of the Hilux New Zealand Rural Games.

The shooting at the Christchurch mosques deeply affected Bradley and his family. “Our thoughts are for the families of the victims,” said Shaun.

“As a sporting organisation, we absolutely condemn all unlawful use of firearms. We regard our opportunity to use firearms in our sport as a privilege, not a right.”

Bradley is currently the North Island overall men’s champion and the New Zealand overall men’s champion for cowboy action shooting. His goal is to become the overall men’s world title holder and plans to return to compete in the USA next year.

He is also keen to see more young people and families take up the sport in New Zealand, for both the gun safety and fun aspect.

by Denise Gunn Four generations of the Downs family have been involved in breeding Hereford stud cattle in Taranaki in 2015, Lance and Janelle Downs branched out to begin their stud, Tawanui.

T

he couple’s Strathmore farm is part of a large family operated enterprise, Downs Family Farms, and they work closely with family members.

Since Lance’s great-grandfather established the original family stud, Wingrove Herefords, more than 70 years ago, the family now own four farms.

In addition to the 826ha Strathmore farm run by Lance and Janelle, Lance’s parents Kevin and Jean run the 260ha Pukengahu farm. A 2,285ha block, Aotuhia, is operated by Lance’s twin brother Lloyd and his partner Lizzy.

Lance and Kevin also manage a 635ha block, Te Kuiti, near Pio Pio. “Our business is a combination of land to support our overall business with Aotuhia Station a beef breeding and store block, two fattening and Hereford

breeding blocks Strathmore and Te Kuiti, and a bull farm, Pukengahu.”

Close to 37,000 stock units are spread over the properties.

Lance and Janelle founded their Hereford stud four years ago with the purchase of dispersal cows and heifers from three different studs; Leelands (Charlie and Margaret Lees), Makuri (Robin and Margaret Vickers) and Keelryn (John and Bernice Loveridge).

“We derived our stud name (prefix) from the combination of farm names from our Strathmore property. ‘Tawa’ meaning strong and ‘nui’ meaning plentiful, in the hope that this will breed true,” said Janelle.

Since then, a strict culling and mating programme was put in place to integrate cows from three different studs into their herd. They’ve based

The pair looks for cows with moderate birth weights and consistently breeding polled cattle that are dark red in colour, with clean white heads and white manes. Cows must also be compact enough to graze the hills while still rearing a good calf and maintain body condition.

“We target two markets — the beef market and the dairy industry.”

Although the average annual rainfall for the Strathmore farm is around 1,800ml, it is not always spread evenly throughout the year. Winters can be cold and wet, and over the past few years, summers have been particularly dry.

Currently, there are 16,000 lambs and 550 cattle on Strathmore.

“We aim to fatten all our stock now.

However, our second cut of Hereford heifers are put to the bull and sold incalf, so nothing is sold store. All fat stock are killed through Affco.”

Lance and Janelle hold two on-farm bull sales each year to cater to two different groups of clientele. In June, a beef breeders stud sale is combined with two Angus studs — Aywon and Te Kupe. This sale includes the best commercial and registered Hereford bulls from Tawanui, and registered Angus bulls from the other studs. Another farm bull sale, targeting the dairy industry, is held in September. Close to 150

This year the couple bred a bull, Tawanui Cub, considered of high enough quality to go to the national Hereford sale in Feilding. That was a major goal when the new stud was established and achieved in just four years.

The couple, are members of the New Zealand Hereford Association and the Taranaki Hereford Association.

Janelle is secretary of the Taranaki club. Holding more on-farm events to showcase their cattle is one of their aims.

“Our cattle are working cattle.

They have a job to work the hills to

keep the pasture right for sheep. It’s important that our clients get to see this, so they can be assured that our cattle will transfer well onto other hill country farms.”

Lance and Janelle plan to continue their focus on breeding a strong line of cows that consistently breed quality bulls and heifers, to tick all their target criteria. They also wish to generate a passion for Herefords in their children who will hopefully carry on with the stud.

“Lance is the fourth generation of Downs family breeding Herefords. It would make us so proud for our children to be the fifth.”

Taranaki Dairy Trainee of the Year, Marshall Jane, loves being outdoors, mucking in and watching the progression of a herd.

T

he 21-year-old spent his early years on his stepfather’s Waikato dairy farm — relief milking followed. Although Marshall considered joining the New Zealand Defence Force or taking up an electrical apprenticeship, dairying stood out as a career choice.

“When it came to making a decision at the end of Year 13, dairy farming was my choice, I made, and I’ve never looked back. I obtained my first full-time job seven days after graduating from high school.”

Marshall started his career as a dairy farm assistant on a 600-cow Normanby farm; a position he held for two and a half years.

Last year he was employed as a farm assistant on Christine Good’s 222ha-effective, 750-cow Te Kete farm in Otakeho, working for 50/50 sharemilkers Rob and Mel van den Brand. The van den Brand’s are previous winners of the Taranaki Sharemilker/ Equity Farmer of the Year title. Shortly after taking on this position, Marshall was promoted to shed manager.

The farm’s temperate climate has an average, annual rainfall of 1,500ml.

Summers are generally dry and the winters warm.

“We grow maize on the farm and we are on target to reach 314,000 milk solids for the season,” he said.

“I enjoy how every day is different.

I love being outdoors and getting my hands dirty, learning about how decisions are made and the reasoning behind selling and culling specific cows.”

Marshall said his involvement in this process furthers his knowledge which he will be able to call on in the future.

Since leaving high school, Marshall has continued agricultural studies through Primary ITO. “These qualifications include Animal Health and Husbandry, Dairy Livestock

Feeding and Milk Quality level one,” he said.

It is the second year Marshall has entered the dairy awards programme.

He believes the awards have helped him understand his performance as an employee, both individually and within a team.

“The awards helped me realise where I needed to focus on to become a better trainee and to identify my goals and plan to achieve them.”

In the near future, Marshall would like to move into a 2IC position on the farm he is working on.

“Mid-term, I want to gain some sort of manager role, like contract milking or lower-order sharemilking. My long term career goal is to own my herd and be 50/50 sharemilking one day.”

For the past year, Marshall has been a member of the Central Taranaki Young Farmers. He would also like to

Should I take coenzyme Q10?

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance essential for life.

While we normally make all the CoQ10 we need, some people because of age, health problems or medications can benefit from taking extra good quality CoQ10.

CoQ10 is essential to make the energy our bodies need. The final stage of making energy needs CoQ10 to shuttle the hydrogen needed to generate energy. If your levels of CoQ10 are low, this can be felt as low energy, weak muscles and general fatigue.

CoQ10 is also an exceptional antioxidant protecting cells and fats from free radicals.

The most essential antioxidant function is to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol as it circulates in the body. It is a critical part of our natural defences against blockages in heart arteries and other blood vessels.

Possibly the most common reason for CoQ10 supplementation is for those using cholesterol-lowering (statin) medication. The side effects of statins are so common that they are a diagnosable disease called statin myopathy. The most common side effects are muscle stiffness, pain and weakness; this can also cause general fatigue, which often feels like a lack of motivation.

Statins effectively inhibit the enzyme needed to make cholesterol.

Unfortunately, this enzyme (HMG-CoA reductase) is also required to make CoQ10. Blocking this enzyme reduces cholesterol but also CoQ10 by as much as 50%.

Drug companies are well aware of this problem and hold patents for combining CoQ10 with statins. Until such drugs are available, I recommend those on statins supplement with 100– 200mg of naturally fermented CoQ10.

Be aware that our retail market is now flooded with lower grade semi-synthetic CoQ10 usually sold in higher doses at much lower prices.

Adding a good CoQ10 alongside statins will in most cases, protect against and often reverse existing statin side effects. My favourite is the wellresearched and patented US product CoQsol. If you are unsure feel free to phone or email your questions.

Protecting our bees The use of protective covers for crops can lead to a decline in honey bee foraging and colony strength, according to a recent study funded by Zespri and the Ministry for Primary Industries Sustainable Farming Fund and conducted by Plant & Food Research.

Horticultural industries worldwide are increasingly relying on protected cropping for food and fibre production.

Understanding the effects of protective covers on honey bees is essential for developing new management options for beekeepers and orchard managers.

Plant & Food Research scientists studied honey bee foraging dynamics, colony health and pollination services in Bay of Plenty kiwifruit orchards that were either covered with hail netting or uncovered. They found that colonies in the covered orchards lost adult bees at a faster rate than the colonies in uncovered orchards.

“The study illustrates the need for strategies to improve the effectiveness and sustainability of honey bee pollination in these environments,” says research leader Dr Lisa Evans.

“Global food production relies on managed and unmanaged animal pollinators. Protective covers such as greenhouses, polytunnels, and hail netting have increasingly been used to enhance crop quality and yield by safeguarding against factors such as weather, plant pests and pathogens.

“These covers can restrict the movement of pollinators, with negative consequences for hive health and pollination. The covered orchards

showed an acute loss of foragers with more than 40 per cent of marked bees under cover failing to return to the colony after their first flight. That is three times as many bees as those lost from hives not under cover.

“There were also changes in the behaviour of successful foragers. Under cover they foraged for shorter time periods and completed fewer foraging trips. During direct observation of bees in the covered orchard, very few bees were seen returning with pollen, suggesting that few were foraging successfully.

“The loss of foraging bees and behavioural changes could be explained by several factors, including orientation failure or ‘light traps’ within the foraging environment. Covers may also restrict bee access to additional resources that they need for healthy development.”

Plant & Food Research is working on several projects in New Zealand and Australia to further understand pollination in protected cropping environments and to directly test methods for improving honey bee performance under nets.

The team has also been working to develop strategies for managing other pollinators, such as bumblebees and flies, which seem to be less negatively affected by covers.

Discovering Stratford’s variety Known as a family-friendly destination, Stratford offers attractions to suit all types of visitors to the town such as TET King’s Theatre — the first movie theatre in the Southern Hemisphere to show ‘talkies’.

If art is of interest, the Percy Thomson Art Gallery provides an extensive programme of exhibitions, and new exhibitions open every three to four weeks. These vary between national, local and regional — established and emerging artists.

There are some 300 kilometres of walking tracks in nearby Egmont National Park from short walks such as the 15-minute Kamahi Track from the Mountain House goes straight into the heart of the rainforest where heavy lichen and moss grow on kamahi trees, creating the famous Goblin Forest.

Rural recycling tackles waste

Finding an efficient and sustainable solution can be confusing and timeconsuming for farmers and growers, especially with each waste stream having its own separate processes for recycling or safe disposal. To add to the challenge; the options aren’t always obvious, conveniently located or available to use at all times and can be costly.

Rural recycling programme, Agrecovery, is stepping in to help solve these challenges. The programme, which recycles agrichemical containers and drums and sustainably disposes of unwanted agrichemicals, has been trialling a project that allows farmers and growers to drop off a variety of waste at one location. This one-stop-shop solution aims to discourage the harmful disposal practices of burning, burying or stockpiling waste.

Last year Agrecovery initiated two highly successful pilot projects in Matamata and Geraldine, collecting more than 19 tonnes of waste in just two days. Agrecovery is coordinating another six events. Agrecovery works with partners, such as Plasback, to find sustainable options for recycling the collected waste. The ideal solution is repurposing it locally as it does with

agrichemical containers. This rigid plastic can be recycled into useful products like underground cable covers and building materials. Silage wrap can be made into tuffboard, a plywood substitute, but more needs to be done to ensure we have the means to process waste — particularly soft plastics.

Consumers now demand that manufacturers take responsibility for their products so that any packaging can be recycled after use.

Manufacturers can do this by paying a levy to ensure that there are recyclable pathways for all products. The New

Zealand government is also pushing for more manufacturers to follow suit.

There is also an opportunity to add value to scrap plastics by processing into a pelletised product for use domestically and globally.

Quality recycled plastic is in high demand and can be made into new useful products, such as tuffboard and cable cover, or better yet, into useful products for farmers and growers.

Agrecovery is New Zealand’s solution for the recycling of agrichemical containers and drums, and the safe disposal of unwanted agrichemicals.

M bovis ‘surge’ in operation

The spectre of Mycoplasma bovis has been all too real for those in the rural sector.

With the cull tally approaching six figures (more than 90,000 cattle have had to be destroyed so far), the Ministry of Primary Industries has been proactive in enacting a plan to stop the spread of the disease. That led to promises of a ‘surge’, an uptick of properties investigated and potentially locked down for stock movement in an effort to quarantine and hence eradicate M bovis.

MPI programme director Geoff Gwyn explained: “This is happening in a

short period because of increased surveillance late last year, which has resulted in a peak in the number of highrisk properties that we have identified, and the desire to get ahead of the curve before autumn and winter stock movements get into full swing.

“We will contact about 300 farmers as a priority over the next few weeks who have had high-risk animals move onto their property.

“We would expect 250 of those to have Notice of Direction movement

controls placed on them immediately and, following testing, that 10 per cent to 12 per cent may become Confirmed Properties.”

In a stroke of good fortune, it now appears that far fewer than those 250 expected farms will be placed under restrictions. It’s a case of ‘better safe than sorry’ for the one billion dollar eradication programme, which has cleared 114 farms of M Bovis since July of 2017, out of 168 farms where it has been confirmed present.

So far more than $57 million has been paid in compensation for loss

of stock, but rural advocacy groups and mental health organisations warn that the added stress and strain, both social, psychological and financial is an additional cost, which is hard to match with a dollar value.

As the very busy June 1 and ‘Gypsy week’ season shows, movement of cattle, whether in bulk or individually, is vital to the health of the industry.

MPI’s surge comes along with promises to work closely with farms under restrictions to meet their needs with regards essentials like feed, planning for a hopefully M bovis free future.

Farmers take the lead on water Ask most people about the most important element needed for a productive farm, and they would likely say that it’s land, or possibly sunshine for photosynthesis; farmers, however, know that it’s water.

Water is the engine driving healthy pasture growth, is necessary for animal health, is used to help break down effluent, to clean and to cool in the shed and to irrigate crops. That means it’s held in high regard. The news that this is likely to be drier than average winter with lower soil moisture and river flows will already be on the radar of the custodians of the land.

Farmers are, in fact, responsible for the biggest voluntary environmental improvement project of the last decade.

Since the publication of the Sustainable Dairying: Water Accord in 2013, a raft of proposals from this document have been implemented, covering aspects from water usage through to effluent disposal and the exclusion of livestock from watercourses on Kiwi farms.

Consider the sheer amount of creeks, rivers and streams running through our rural heartlands.

Now process the fact that close to 98 per cent of them have been blocked to livestock. Riparian planting is also well advanced.

The Sustainable Dairying: Water Accord was developed under the oversight of the Dairy Environment Leadership Group, comprising representatives from farmers, dairy companies, central government, regional councils and the Federation of Maori Authorities.
