Megan Symons and her father Gordon Symes enjoy their little slice of paradise

Twenty-five years of voluntary work by farmers, iwi, schools and community groups to fence and plant waterways helped achieve some of the best results in Taranaki’s river and stream health in two decades. Their efforts earned the 2019 Excellence Award for Environmental Wellbeing from Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ).

Taranaki Regional Council chair David MacLeod said the award belongs to the community.

Mr MacLeod recognised the thousands of people involved who have invested “so much sweat, money and time” into fencing and planting alongside rivers and streams on private land around Mount Taranaki since 1993.

The voluntary scheme keeps stock out of waterways, cuts down effluent and nutrient run-off, and shades streamwater to encourage native biodiversity.

More than 15,400km of Taranaki streambanks about the length of New Zealand’s coastline are covered under the voluntary programme. NIWA scientists acknowledge it as likely one of the largest and longest-running restorative freshwater projects in the world.

One of the first Taranaki dairy farmers to start riparian planting and fencing in the 1990s was 83-year-old, Gordon

Symes. He still lives on the Opunake farm, which is now run by his daughter and son-in-law, Megan and Matt Symons.

Mrs Symons grew up on the farm and has seen first-hand how the water has improved as streambanks have been fenced and planted.

“This is our little slice of paradise, but it wasn’t always like this,” she said.

“I can remember trying to cross the river, and the rocks would be all slimy and slippery, and the water level was low and warm, like unnaturally warm — it’s because there wasn’t the shade.”

“Now it’s a pleasure (since the streambank planting and fencing) that my children get to enjoy this and they love coming here and swimming.”

Mr MacLeod said Taranaki is well ahead of the national work on freshwater restoration. However, the region is not sitting still. Work is underway to make riparian planting and fencing compulsory on Taranaki’s ring plain around 2020.

“This is Taranaki’s answer to a national concern, but it won’t be solved with a one-size fits all approach. We’re building on a programme that science has proved is working, supporting livelihoods and improving lifestyles.”

“This award highlights the power of Taranaki’s community and what can be achieved when people are supported and work together,” said Mr MacLeod.

Deer industry offers learning experience

An upcoming Future Deer Farmers Experience will give three keen agricultural students an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the industry.

For the second year running, Deer Industry New Zealand (DINZ) and the New Zealand Deer Farmers Association (NZDFA) are offering this learning experience.

Deer Industry New Zealand project manager Rob Aloe said the tour is aimed at non-university students studying towards a certificate or diploma in agriculture or farm management.

Eligible students may be studying through AgITO or polytechnics. Those who have attended deer husbandry courses can also apply. Individual recommendations from industr y contacts will be considered too.

“We do a similar tour for university students called the Big Deer Tour, which is held in April,” said Mr Aloe.

This year’s Future Deer Farmers Experience will be held in Canterbury and the MacKenzie Country from August 19–22.

Students will work and learn from venison, velvet and co-product marketing companies, deer farmers and those attending the NZDFA Next Generation workshop.

“The tour aims to give students a look into the New Zealand deer farming industry to raise the profile of the opportunities in the deer farming industry.”

Applications for last year’s tour were received from all over New Zealand.

The three successful students visited deer farmers and a variety of industryrelated companies in Waikato and the Bay of Plenty.

Valencia Hamerton of Huntly was one of the students chosen for last year’s tour. She was studying at Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre in Masterton, working towards a level four New Zealand Certificate in Agriculture Drystock Breeding and Farming.

Otago Polytechnic Cromwell campus student, Mikayla Simpson from Te Anau, was another selected student.

She was studying in the high country farming programme and also employed at Dunstan Burn Station in St Bathans.

The third successful applicant was Shaun Tahau from Te Haroto, Hawke’s Bay. Shaun was in his first year of a two-year cadetship at Smedley Station.

Mr Aloe said it is hoped this year’s chosen students will gain a greater understanding of the deer farming industry and deer as a livestock option while giving them an insight into the industry’s products.

Students will also learn of the opportunities available and see the passion of those involved within the industry. Transport, meal and accommodation costs of chosen students will be covered.

Applicants are required to send a written submission, outlining their interest in the deer industry and reasons for wanting to take part in the trip. Two written references, either character or employment, must also be included, along with a relevant course of study and academic grades.

by Denise Gunn Runner-up in the Taranaki Share Farmer of the Year competition, Matt Thomas and Sophie Parker, were working as rural professionals before switching to a dairy career.

A

s the couple’s previous careers were heavily focussed on the dairy industry, it was this area that particularly held their interest.

Moving into a dairy career has allowed the couple to continue working outdoors and with animals.

Matt holds a Bachelor of Veterinary Science and was employed as a large animal veterinarian. Sophie was working as a private consultant and DairyNZ consulting officer. She has a Bachelor of Science majoring in human nutrition and physiology, and a Master of Agricultural Science majoring in dairy nutrition.

Matt and Sophie began their dairy farming career with two years contract milking on two farms; the first at

Kaponga and then Warea. Two seasons ago they became 50/50 herd-owning sharemilkers on Norton and Coral Moller’s Oakura Farms Limited. Matt and Sophie’s 280-cow herd are milked on the 84ha-effective property, supported by a further 60ha of run-off properties.

Sophie said they calve around 280– 295 crossbred/Jersey cross cows.

“We rear 120 youngstock per year on the run-off properties, 60 replacement heifers and the remaining 60 are surplus dairy heifers, beef calves or Jersey bull calves.”

Droughts and wet springs have been the biggest challenge the couple have faced so far. “We are trying to learn from seasonal weather fluctuations so that

we have a more robust system that can handle extended periods of dry. We are trying to do this through a mixture of onfarm crops and supplements brought in from the run-off properties.”

“The coast is known for being prone to summer dry,” said Sophie. “The winter is very agreeable here, but we are very vulnerable to dry summer conditions.“ Although the annual average rainfall on this area of the coast is 1,400mm, Matt and Sophie have found rain events are infrequent and heavy. To avoid pugging and pasture damage, the cows are kept on a stand-off pad overnight during winter when the forecast is for heavy rain.

In Matt and Sophie’s first season on this farm, their herd produced 87,500kgMS. At the end of their second season, that figure increased to

97,000kgMS, exceeding the farm record of 95,600kgMS. “We run a high, initial stocking rate of 3.4 cows/ha and also run quite an aggressive spring-round speed of around 16 days. With the paddocks out for our extra young stock being raised, we generally have not had a genuine surplus, apart from cutting our calf paddocks. This is mostly for quality as the cows do not want to graze them.”

One of the major highlights for Matt and Sophie has been running the farm as a whole season, once-a-day milking farm.

“They have found several benefits with once-a-day milking and few disadvantages.

avid surfer, and Sophie is in her second year learning Te Reo at Te Wananga O Aotearoa. They are expecting their first baby in October.

Creating a repeatable, easy-to-follow plan to get through next season’s weather fluctuations is amongst the couple’s short-term plans for the farm.

They also want to continue to improve their herd’s genetics.

“We are trying to breed cows with really strong udders and good capacity, as well as being A2 if possible,” said Matt.

When their herd is completely paid for, Matt and Sophie plan to look at other investment options.

The first-time Taranaki Dairy Industry Award entrants decided to enter the competition this year as a challenge.

Matt said the awards were recommended by a lot of people as a way to analyse all the parts of their business and take stock.

“We enjoyed the challenge of bringing all parts of a farming operation and business together to achieve a good result, and see animals healthy and performing well.”

Family business

an orchid adventure

From humble beginnings with a single greenhouse 33 years ago, Slater’s Orchids has grown to become a successful enterprise exporting orchids around the globe.

O

wners, Don and Ailsa Slater, set up the original 250sqm orchid greenhouse for their daughter Maxine. On leaving school, Maxine was keen to follow a career in floriculture and worked in the greenhouse for four years. When she headed overseas to pursue other interests, her parents continued with the Bell Block business, growing cymbidium orchids.

The nursery now grows 70 varieties of cymbidium orchids with 80 per cent of these exported to Japan, the United States, the Netherlands and Australia. The remainder is sold on the New Zealand market, to florists, Taranaki customers and through the nursery’s shop.

Don oversees the business on a daily basis, and Ailsa is never far away at packing time. The couple’s other daughter, Christine Bricknall, has now been with the company for seven years.

She looks after the New Zealand and local regional sales; takes care of marketing and also runs the nursery roadside orchid shop. The shop is open to the public seven days a week during the season from May to December.

Around 100,000 cymbidium orchid stems are produced in the nursery between May to November each year.

Each of those plants receives individual care from one of the nine staff members.

filled in by part-time employees. “Each staff member has their own zone within the nursery, and look after each and every plant from beginning to end of each flowering season.

“There are three key people: a grower, a person who is responsible for staff and the organising of the flower season, and a person who is responsible for local market trade.”

At the beginning and end of each season, bulbs are pruned, and plants repotted. When the orchid plant starts to spike flowers, each spike is tied up to an overhead wire with an elastic string, which is tightened weekly. As the spike grows and the buds of the orchid flower pop out, a hook is put on the top bud and tightened to keep the stem straight for export.

“Orchid stems naturally want to grow any way but straight, but for export, we need a straight stem.”

The orchids are grown in five twinskinned plastic greenhouses covering 9,500sqm of land on the property. All orchids are picked and packed on-site.

to check for imperfections. “The stem is then sleeved, a water vial placed on the end of them and packed carefully into flower boxes.”

Depending on the stem’s length, up to 12 stems can be packed in each box.

“They are then sorted in the packing shed into orders, placed in steel flower cages and trucked to Auckland by Mainfreight for export.”

Four main colour groups, green, white, pink and yellow, are grown within the 70 different varieties of cymbidium orchids

at Slater’s Orchids. There are numerous shades within each of these colour groups. Novelty colours, which include burgundy, orange, brown and apricot, are also available.

“Each orchid variety is numbered and given a name.

“Orchids are very much like people.

They have their own characteristics and personality, and need to be treated accordingly.”

Slater’s Orchids continually looks for more opportunities to grow in order to

remain profitable. Christine said as an exporter, the exchange rate plays a large part in determining profitability, and it is largely out of their control.

“Labour makes up a large portion of our costs. With the present escalation of wage rates, we must look at our efficiencies and the use of less labour.

The challenge is always there to find new and more valued markets.”

Slater’s Orchids is currently developing an on-site tissue culture laboratory to further expand the business. The

laboratory will service the nursery as well as the potato industry.

“Here we will be able to take tissue from a young shoot of an orchid and place it into a growing medium, in sterile and climatically controlled conditions, to grow into new plants. We can get around 1,000 baby orchids off one shoot.”

“Orchid flowers are used in so many different ways; funerals, weddings, table arrangements or they simply look lovely standing in a vase on their own,” said Christine.

Mining to milking

by Denise Gunn Taranaki Dairy Manager of the Year, Kenneth Harrison, began a solid career in dairying when he returned to New Zealand from Australia two years ago.

K

enneth was born and bred in Taranaki, growing up in Manaia.

His first taste of dairying came after his employment at the local meatworks came to a halt for a season.

Relief milking and helping out during calving around the district led to a farm assistant position on an Okato farm. He completed a full season in 2004/05 and found dairying really enjoyable.

He also worked half of the 2005/06 season before Western Australia’s mining industry beckoned. Work in the mining industry for the next seven years followed, starting as drillers offside and progressing to rig manager. During his last four years working in Australia,

Kenneth took on short-haul trucking, fulfilling a childhood dream of being a truck driver.

“Life took me down a bit of a sidetrack so to speak, which I’m thankful for, as it’s made me the person I am today,” he said.

Kenneth returned to Taranaki in 2016 with his wife Nicky, and their three children, Lachlan, Jaiden and Bella.

“We made the decision to move from Perth back to Taranaki and get back into dairying.”

cow Opunake farm. Kenneth said the McCraig’s encouraged him to complete his Primary ITO Level Four, which he had started before leaving for Australia.

“I completed that within a year with Primary ITO and now plan to begin my production management.”

He was drawn to the dairy industry for a variety of reasons, particularly working outdoors, the sense of accomplishment, and being able to spend more time with his family.

“Having to start from the bottom again after having a successful drilling career has presented some challenges,” said Kenneth.

“However, I’m no stranger to hard work. My passion and drive for farming come from my family, seeing how much they’ve grown and how much they love the lifestyle makes Nicole and I determined to succeed.” He also listens to and learns from knowledgeable people in the industry. His work in

the mining industry has given him a thorough health and safety background too. Towards the end of 2017, Kenneth was promoted to herd manager on the Te Kiri farm. Since then he has worked his way up to assistant manager.

“It’s been a rapid rise through the ranks since beginning with Charlie and Jody. For them to have the trust and belief in my ability means a lot to me.”

The McCraig’s Kiwi-cross herd is milked on the farm’s 320ha milking platform. Young stock is raised on a 260ha dry block, which adjoins the dairy platform. The production target for each season is 375,000kg/MS. The average annual rainfall for the farm is around 1,500mm. Summer is generally warm, and the farm gets quite dry around February. The mean winter temperature is around 8C. “We do monitor spore counts through the warm, wetter months in autumn so use zinc through our dosatron.”

Silage is grown on the farm, along with hay and winter kale. A rapeseed crop trial is underway. Kenneth believes the strengths of the business lies in teamwork.

“Every member of the team is on board with trying to reach our farm goals. We also look out for one another, be it farm-related or otherwise.

Winning the 2019 Taranaki Dairy Manager of the Year title is Kenneth’s biggest career highlight. He and Nicky plan to go contract milking in the next

three years. Their long-term goal is to be 50/50 sharemilking with around 250 cows within 10 years.

The couple acknowledges the support of their family and employers.

Should I take coenzyme Q10?

Winner makes history

James Robertson, a business graduate, has made history being the youngest competitor to be named the 51st FMG Young Farmer of the Year competition.

“When my name was called out, I went into shock. I just can’t believe it — it’s a dream come true. It has always been a goal of mine to win this title,” said James.

The 22-year-old Auckland-based business graduate grew up on a 200 cow dairy farm in Waikato and works for Fonterra in its trade strategy team.

His involvement with NZ Young Farmers started during high school.

“The opportunities in the agri-food sector are endless, even if you live in the city. You just have to be passionate,” he said.

“The work NZ Young Farmers does in schools to show students the diverse range of careers in agriculture is extremely important. I probably wouldn’t be in this position if it wasn’t for my involvement with NZ Young Farmers early on.”

The victory was the culmination of days of gruelling practical and technical challenges, which tested their skills, knowledge and stamina. Competitors had to drive a large grape harvester, make sausages, assess health and safety risks using a virtual reality simulator, install an irrigation system for fruit trees, market a line of sheep and sit an agri-business exam. James won a

prize package worth at least $75,000, including a trip to Ireland and he took out the FMG People’s Choice Award.

Central Hawke’s Bay technical field representative Joseph Watts gained second place, and Waikato vet Emma Dangen came third and picked up the award for championing environmental best practice. Canterbury competitor Georgie Lindsay was unplaced in the competition.

Three decades of community care

August 30 is Daffodil Day, the Cancer Society of New Zealand’s primary annual fundraiser, and a time to reflect on just how far we have come in the understanding, prevention and treatment of cancer during the past three decades.

The first-ever Daffodil Day was in 1990, and this time 30 years ago plans were underway for just how to promote the good work that the NZCS does in the community. Reliant on funding from initiatives like this, the organisation covers a variety of roles, from counselling for patients and their families through to practical care, sun smart and smoke-free initiatives, and, of course, advocating for life-saving medical research.

The daffodil, long held to be a herald of new life after the long winter, was chosen as an apt emblem for the new appeal, as its distinctive and cheerful colour gave the message; the Cancer Society is all about hope and positive change.

In 2019, that promise is still coming true, donation by donation. Information for those diagnosed with cancer is getting out there. A helpline is up and running, NZCS representatives drive patients to their hospital visits with petrol paid for by donations. Schools educate kids about sun safety, and the number of smokers continues to

diminish. These are signposts on a road, which continues on, with the eventual destination being a cure for all forms of cancer.

Medical science works slowly but inexorably, and there is no limit to human ingenuity. In the meantime, every bit of help counts this August 30.

Waste milk risks

Waste milk has traditionally been fed to calves to dispose of milk that can’t be sent for supply, but DairyNZ senior scientist Jane Lacy-Hulbert has investigated if it is a good idea.

With an increased focus on the responsible use of antibiotics, questions are being asked about waste milk’s value as a feed source for calves, and the risks this practice might pose to the wider environment.

Waste (or ‘red’) milk is the milk produced by lactating cows when they are sick and receiving antimicrobial treatment for diseases such as mastitis.

It also applies to the milk produced in the withholding period, which can be three to four days after treatment.

Exposing a bacterial population, such as the calf’s developing digestive tract, to low concentrations of antibiotics may encourage bacterial growth with existing resistance genes. It could also lead to other bacteria mutating and developing new ways to resist antibiotics.

The risk is that calves consuming this milk will shed antibiotic-resistant faecal bacteria into the environment. It could have unintended consequences for your

calves, and the future usefulness of the antibiotic. That is backed up by a substantial review published in the European Union in 2017. The review found that shedding was more pronounced for younger calves (two to three weeks old), compared to six to seven-week-old calves.

Fortunately, this shedding wasn’t observed in calves fed colostrum from cows previously treated at dry-off with long-acting dry cow antibiotic products.

Unfor tunately, pasteurising waste milk won’t deactivate the residues, as most antibiotics are heat-stable.

Although there are few studies on this aspect, it is likely that antibiotic residues would interfere with calves establishing good gut bacteria, or that pathogens and viruses from older, sick cows could infect the young calf. If there are more antibiotic-resistant bacteria present in the gut, these issues would be harder to control.

Although waste milk may be a convenient feed for calves, is it worth the risk for the health of the replacement calf, or to the environment? One thing is certain it cannot be fed to bobby calves, as the calf’s gut is likely to absorb the antibiotic

residues and cause the carcass to be rejected. It’s ‘not’ ok to feed waste milk to ‘any’ calves.

Award for red meat Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s Taste Pure Nature country of origin brand was recognised at the inaugural Primary Industries Awards.

“Taste Pure Nature has been a team effort not just within Beef + Lamb New Zealand, but right across the red meat sector both here domestically and with export-marketing companies operating in the United States,” says B+LNZ general manager Market Development Nick Beeby.

A farming triple threat

In show business, the triple threat refers to a performer who can sing, dance and act in equal measure. Here, we’re talking about the ability to mow, dig and move materials with aplomb. It’s a feat made possible with a single small tractor and three perfectly balanced pieces of equipment, all of them from Kubota.

The package starts with the b3150, a small machine with big potential thanks to its 31 horsepower Kubota E-TVCS diesel engine. It’s funny how time can blur preconceptions and make a mockery of stereotypes. When the first hybrid vehicles hit the road, in the not so distant past, there was everything short of warfare between those who drove large sports utility vehicles and those who were early adopters of greener tech.

Now, at a stroke, the last grumbles of that argument have been more than put to rest, as Range Rover enjoy great success with their own plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model.

It’s a sublime marriage of the things, which have made the Range Rover great across the years; its off-road abilities, power, comfort and style, blended with the ability to deliver a fuel sipping 3.6 litres for every 100 kilometres, or more than 50km on electric power alone.

There hasn’t been any watering down of the power on tap here.

There are still close to 400 horses under the hood, with backup for the Range Rover’s lightweight engine coming from an 85kw electric motor and a low-mounted battery pack to increase stability.

This large vehicle accelerates from 0-100kp/h in just 6.8 seconds, which was supercar fast not so long ago (exactly the same as a 1991 Porsche 911).

Bear in mind that raw speed is not the party piece of this machine, however. For all its elegance and luxurious interior trappings, the PHEV Range Rover is all about conquering harsh conditions, and it still wades, climbs, crawls and descends hills with military aplomb. In fact, EV only mode makes for silent, scalpel-accurate low-speed driving.

since the inception of the brand, with successive generations introducing smart ideas, which are carried on into the future. From the idea of a folding tailgate, which forms a handy seat or

bench through to modern innovations such as a phone app to pre-heat or cool the cabin, there is a lot to explore beyond the PHEV underpinnings of this eco-conscious Range Rover. Need we

even mention that the Queen drives one? This feat of engineering deserves a test drive just to see how ‘eco-friendly’ and ‘luxurious power’ can live together in harmony.
