The announcement of Fonterra’s forecast drop in the dairy payout in December prompted Taranaki woman Vanessa Ingram to set up a social media group offering free help to farmers.

Fonterra had reduced its forecast farm-gate milk price for the 2014/15 season from $5.30 per kgMS to $4.70 per kgMS. Fonterra chairman John Wilson said although farmers were expecting this lower forecast, the revision will put pressure on their farming business budgets.

“There is still considerable volatility in global dairy markets.”

“Falling oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty in Russia and Ukraine, and subdued demand from China as it continues to work through inventory are all contributing to ongoing volatility and weak demand,” he said.

Vanessa said the ‘Free help for our NZ Farmers’ Facebook page was set up to help farmers out.

“They are going through a hard time at the moment.”

Vanessa has received a positive response with people joining the group from all over New Zealand offering to lend a hand with milking, fencing, spraying weeds, grubbing thistles, working with livestock, cooking and baking. The help offered is available to all farmers, not just those in the dairy industry.

“I would like to see the farming community go back to what is used to be with everybody helping each other out, especially in times of need,” she said.

Vanessa grew up on a dairy farm near Toko and began milking cows from the age of 12. She is familiar with the challenges farmers face on the farm and the flow-on effect the drop in payout will have on businesses and the community.

Now a full-time mother living in Stratford, Vanessa is willing to help farmers in the region with milking.

“I don’t mind using my spare time helping,” she said.

Vanessa has also taken the free help concept a step further by placing fuel vouchers into a couple of farmer’s letterboxes in the Manawatu.

“I was given some fuel vouchers when I was shifting, then put them into random farmer’s letterboxes while driving from Dannevirke to Stratford.”

Vanessa would welcome more members with offers of help and encourages farmers to also join the group to take up these offers.

The study is looking into the higher risk that workers in these occupational groups face of developing blood and lymph node cancers due to the use of pesticides, fungicides and herbicides.

Massey University research nurse Heather Duckett said the research is based on overseas studies.

These studies, which have shown that pesticide exposure can result in small changes in markers in the blood, have not yet been conducted in New Zealand.

“We will be looking at changes in the components of blood, specifically the increased risk of non-Hodgson lymphoma,” said Ms Duckett.

“In New Zealand farming occupations have consistently been associated with an increased risk on nonHodgkins lymphoma.

“Pesticide exposure is likely to play a role but the specific agents have yet to be identified.”

One hundred regular users of pesticides are required along with 50 non-users.

The non-users will have not handled sprays but may have worked in paddocks after pesticides have been used in them. Blood results from the two

A research nurse will arrange a place and time convenient to the volunteers to complete a questionnaire. Urine and blood samples will also be required.

The urine samples will be analysed for pesticide residue.

Two visits will be required to take blood samples — one before any pesticide is used and the other during the peak use of sprays.

The blood tests are solely for research purposes. In the event of abnormal findings which require further investigation, the volunteer’s general practitioner can be notified if this is in accordance with the volunteer. All information and samples given will be confidential and used solely for this research and resulting publications.

Ms Duckett said when the study is completed volunteers will be informed of the results.

HOOKED on helicopters

Taranaki pilot and Beck Helicopters owner Alan Beck was just 19 years old when he first flew in a helicopter. And that first sensation of flying is a memory that has stayed with him.

A

lan’s initial introduction to helicopters was as a high school student in Rotorua, working for Rotorua Weedsprayers during the school holidays.

He said from the moment he saw a Hughes 300 spraying weeds, he became hooked on helicopters.

“I was amazed at this new technology applying spray from the air.”

After leaving school, Alan ended up working full time for Rotorua Weedsprayers and soon become more

involved with the business. “It was a very demanding physical job, demanding long hours and large amount of energy, pulling hoses around hills, and spraying gorse with 245-T — the famous Agent Orange formula.”

Alan quickly rose through the ranks and within a few months was in charge of a couple of four-wheel drive units.

He was sent to Taranaki for a spraying contract and within a year had opened a branch of the business in the region, operating with two units.

“It was about this time that the company I worked for branched out into aerial spraying and my job was to arrange work for the helicopters as it did a circuit through the branches.”

“I was aged 19, and the first time I flew was in a helicopter,” he said.

“I couldn’t believe the absolute sensation of actually flying, and that memory will stay with me the rest of my life, shaping the way I handle first-timers in my own helicopters.” Alan joined the Stratford Aero Club soon afterwards

and learnt to fly in fixed-wing aircraft, spending every available moment he could afford in the air.

His long-term goal of running his own business transpired the day he turned 21 years of age.

“I started out as a ground spraying contractor but within a short time the demand for aerial application was strong.”

Alan organised the work in Taranaki, hiring helicopters from a Wanganui firm to conduct it. This worked well for

Beck Helicopters is based near Eltham

a couple of years. “Then the demand from other areas resulted in the work I had organised being left till almost too late,” he said.

“In a fit of pique, I decided to buy my own helicopter.”

Alan hooked up with a few other enthusiasts and found that to establish the first helicopter service in Taranaki would require a huge effort, along with public and farmer support.

By mid-1973, at the age of 25, married with one daughter and another baby on the way, Alan was given approval to hold an Air Service Licence to operate a helicopter.

“We started out with a Bell 47 and now 42 years later, the company is still run by the same original shareholders, since joined by our son David 20 years ago.” Beck Helicopters is the longest

surviving agricultural operator in the country. “It is also one of the only, if not the only, father and son combos operating Iroquois helicopters on agricultural work in the world.”

As well as agricultural work, Beck Helicopters have taken on numerous unusual tasks. Alan recalls removing the tree from One Tree Hill; pouring 1,000 cube of concrete down the mine shaft at Pike coalmine; flying dignitaries to the summit of Mount Taranaki and other official flights; erecting ‘The Ledge’ bungy at Queenstown; drying cricket grounds; erecting the wind wand on the New Plymouth foreshore, and dozens of tricky construction jobs in New Zealand and overseas.

Alan was also involved in more than 500 search and rescue operations in 20 years, earning a Queens Service Medal

for those services in 1989. In 1990, Alan broke his back in a wire-strike — his only accident in 46 years of flying.

In an effort to draw attention to incidents where wires have killed or seriously injured pilots, mainly low flying agricultural pilots, he introduced the ‘Down to the Wire’ campaign. This campaign, backed by the New Zealand Agricultural Aviation Association and other industry bodies, is designed to persuade farmers and others to consider the dangers associated with stringing wires across gullies, which are difficult to see.

There have been 26 wire-strike fatalities in New Zealand in the past 40 years. Alan said the campaign has drawn a tremendous response. “With high

profile entrepreneur and pilot Dick Smith joining the campaign to make people aware, it has resulted in a positive move by farmers to take it down. Alan said new workplace legislation could further enforce this message, with prosecutions now likely to follow.

“The first farmer to be imprisoned will have a huge effect on any recalcitrant farmer out there.”

Alan is currently the chair of the NZAAA and sits on the Aircare Management Committee, the Helicopter Association Committee, as well as the Aviation Council for Aviation New Zealand.

Now in operation for 42 years, Beck Helicopters is currently the longest serving helicopter operator in New Zealand.

SCHOOL PUTS ENVIRONMENTAL PLANS INTO ACTION

Toko School has only been classed as an Enviroschool since 2012, but already in that short space of time, staff, pupils and helpers have put an action plan into gear.

I

t all began when the school, as part of a community project, created a heritage orchard. One of the teachers, Maree Stark, took this a step further and considered it would be worthwhile for Toko School to be involved in the Enviroschools programme.

Toko Principal Kim Waite said an expression of interest was forwarded to and accepted by the Enviroschools Foundation, followed by a visit from a co-ordinator to get the school started.

“We were also provided with many Enviroschools resources to assist us on our journey.”

More than 950 early childhood education centres, primary, intermediate

and secondary schools throughout New Zealand are involved in the Enviroschools programme. Students are encouraged and supported to participate in various environmental sustainability projects, furthering their knowledge along the way.

“We updated our school’s Strategic Plan, Charter and Annual Plan to reflect our school’s commitment to the Enviroschools philosophy,” said Kim. “The school attaches a management unit to the teacher in charge of this to reflect the extra work this required.”

Toko School’s cur riculum documentation has also been updated to illustrate the environmental work undertaken and project commitments.

Rural Women donated spades to Toko School Since signing up to the Enviroschools Foundation, staff, pupils and helpers have got stuck into numerous schemes.

Following on from creating the heritage orchard, a worm farm was resurrected and a vegetable garden planted. A chicken coop was also constructed,

enabling pupils to learn how to care for poultry.

Over several school terms, pupils collected bottles which were then recycled to create a bottle-house to use for seed germination. With no spouting system in place, pupils were encouraged

“We would like to set up a roadside stall to sell our products,” to design a method to collect the rainwater run-off from the bottle-house roof. The rain-water is used on the school’s garden, orchard and seedlings.

A recycling centre has been built, hot-water solar heating installed for the school pool, and environmentally-friendly cleaning products are now purchased for use around the school.

‘Sustainability in Action’ has been the school-wide focus for 2014 with different actions geared according to age levels.

Kim said the pupils are involved in everything.

“They drive the learning, and the community is so supportive.”

In 2013 Toko School received a Taranaki Environmental Award in the education section, and a bronze award from the Enviroschools Foundation.

Kim said it is hoped the school will soon be recognised as a silver Enviroschool.

An Envirobank is being considered for pupils to deposit money made from selling enviro products grown and produced from the school.

“We would like to set up a roadside stall to sell our products,” said Kim. “Our chickens and worm wee are quite new so we need to embed what we have done thus far.” Kim said the Envirobank will allow classes to request money to support their sustainability-inaction projects or initiatives.

“Our immediate and wider community are just so supportive.

“We have many people doing many things for us to support our sustainability-in-action projects.”

“The support is ongoing and wider reaching,” she said.

Toko School has a current roll of 129 pupils and an additional classroom is being built in 2015 to accommodate projected growth.

A better farm outlook emerges The economic outlook this year for New Zealand farming is largely fine, but with just a few clouds on the horizon.

Many regions like Northland have enjoyed good rainfall through December and generally there has been substantial grass growth throughout the region.

The beef boom is providing a huge economic bonus.

Despite the lowest milk payout forecast in six years, many dairy farmers have been able to capitalise on the current high beef prices by selling cull cows early, and beef stock that has been raised on runoffs. The current trade conflict between Russia and America is quite interesting to follow. The American alliance keep telling us that their trade embargo against Russia is causing the Russian economy to decline.

But a recent article in the New Zealand Herald says that the Russians are looking forward to the 2015 year, despite the country’s economic and political

difficulties The Russian president is enjoying up to 87% support according to a recent poll. It may take some time for the two world economic superpowers to reconcile their differences.

Meanwhile, New Zealand farmers will face some challenging issues this year which will have an impact on their private property rights, and the way they conduct their farming business.

The government’s new legislation regarding water rights and the threat of agency bureaucrats using their power of right of entry onto farmers’ private property are just two of the issues of concern.

The recent action taken by WorkSafe New Zealand inspectors against a Marlborough farming couple, which resulted in them being fined $40,000 altogether between them in the

Blenheim District Court for not wearing helmets while riding their quad bikes on their farm, raises some very serious issues in regard to the right of entry by government agencies onto a farmer’s property. Surveillance cameras were used in an ‘out to get them’ approach and that is abhorrent to right thinking people. When one looks at court fines that have been awarded in other cases, the award of $40,000 is extremely excessive and is out of kilter with how the rest of New Zealand society is treated.

It is ironic that there is now a call by some cyclists for the law regarding the wearing of cycle helmets to be reviewed, and it seems that if you have a sympathetic doctor a cyclist can obtain an exemption certificate which does not require a helmet on the road. Farmers of New Zealand is of the view that the current policy of forcing farmers to wear helmets when driving quad bikes on their private farm properties is unworkable for many reasons.

Farmers of New Zealand does support the wearing of helmets for road use.

But many of the helmets that are on the market today do not guarantee full

protection. It is our understanding that the majority of deaths on farms due to farm bike accidents are caused through injury to the body.

According to reports by the Department of Labour the most common accident causing serious injury or death was a slow speed sideways roll on the side of a hill. There are thousands of bikes ridden on farms and by the urban community.

We believe that farm bike manufacturers, farmers and Government agencies need to come to a common position on how to safeguard riders of farm ATV bikes as a result of bike rollover, and get the law changed accordingly. While Farmers of New Zealand concedes that a four-post rollover frame is not the most practical way of dealing with this important issue, we strongly support the work that has been done by a Dargaville company in all-terrain vehicle rollover protection.

This is a flexible roll-over lifeguard protector. The manufacturing company claims their design has passed all required tests and the concept is a world first in ATV safety, providing good rider crush protection.

Less bark, more bite from farmers’ best friend

In the years after the liberation of Korea, following the disastrous ruin of World War Two, the farming and agricultural infrastructure of the East Asian nation needed to be rebuilt quickly and efficiently.

As in the aftermath of the same war in Europe, one of the first industries restarted was the manufacture of tractors, offering a way to feed a hungry populous.

By 1947, the first tractors were rolling off the production lines of the newly founded Daedong agricultural machinery company.

Half a century later they have not stopped, and their products are a common sight in the rural hinterland of Korea.

It’s an understatement to say that Korea is a manufacturing powerhouse in modern times — this is the homeland of both Hyundai and Kia, as well as electronics’ giant Samsung.

whole fields at a pass, these smaller machines are versatile workhorses, taking care of numerous smaller jobs — the Swiss army knife rather than the machete. A perfect second tractor, perhaps, for silage and bale handling, or fitted with a front loader for shovelling metal, feed or manure. By narrowing their focus, Kioti have also achieved that other holy grail — good value for money.

The orange machines come fitted with big-brand features (including usb audio in the cab), as well as Perkins diesel engines, a big name used by other big badges in the tractor trade.

The PX1002, for example, comes with a very smooth new transmission system, 100 nicely tamed horses under the hood, a three-speed PTO and the ability to fit Kioti’s own branded front end loader, so even more work can be wrung from this willing little machine.

As tractors seem to get bigger, more complex and more computerised year by year, it’s good to see this Korean company hold the line for a moderately powered, capable, multi-role tractor which comes at a very reasonable price.

And while the Kioti range may not have all the electronic toys of the great battleships of the pastureland from the United States and Germany, it does do the one thing Kiwi farmers demand.

It works hard, and looks built to keep doing so for years to come.

As farming becomes more intensive, the work load becomes more varied, with innumerable small tasks requiring attention.

While some farmers are pleased to hand off such tasks to professional contractors, there are others who can justify a more hands on approach.

After all, it doesn’t take long for a small digger to pay for itself, so long as you and your staff have the skills to use it wisely.

All of which makes the Kubota U series of small excavators all the more attractive. Because unlike their bigger, brawnier brothers, the U series are defined by ease of use. A combination of clever design and simplified controls means that the U series is ideal for the non-fulltime user, with a learning curve that’s gentle and a very forgiving layout.

Manoeuvring into tight spaces, for example, is the forte of the U25-3, a compact and powerful 2.5 ton excavator which is perfect for all those little jobs around the farm.

The ‘tail’ of this digging machine fits into the radius of its tracks, meaning that it can go places where a bulkier machine simply can’t. And while it’s

there, the U25-3’s powerful bucket can dig trenches, prepare foundations, scoop materials, or even be fitted out with a hydraulic auger for fencing or piling duties.

Wool Perspective

Wool market cautiously optimistic Wool prices have eased over the past few weeks although supply has been restrained due to weather interruptions in southern areas, plus an apparent hesitancy by growers in many other areas to begin shearing.

However the hesitancy may simply be that growers have other more important jobs to attend to at present with such a variety of weather issues facing them.

Dry conditions in areas of the South Island have in some cases dictated an early weaning and ewe shearing, while prolonged wet conditions in other areas

have caused anxiousness amongst those farmers keen to get tractor work completed and paddocks sown plus hay and sileage crops harvested.

Wool flow predictions for the remainder of December and throughout January could face further interruption, if some of the long range weather forecast experts are proved correct allowing perhaps some cautious optimism for prices to maintain similar levels to now, on a type for type basis, if supply is restricted. There is one thing for sure, which is that the sheep population is still in decline due to the intervention of alternative farming practices, and continued options created by water introduction, land subdivision and suchlike.

Recent wool auctions have seen an easing in market prices compared to earlier, although general interest has remained solid. As post lamb shorn crossbred fleece began to come forward for sale a decrease in wool quality became apparent, despite

visual wool colour remaining relatively good, showing evidence of tenderness and cotting.

Hogget wools dominated the November and early December crossbred wool auctions with most being of good quality, displaying good washing colour, and length of staple generally in the 75 to 125mm ranges. Interest in crossbred hogget wools was very good with Chinese processor representation dominant from the buyers’ bench.

For buyers searching for mid-micron wool types (Halfbred and Corriedale wool), supply was fairly limited during the November period, however, those offered were well sought after by the trade and, although also easing in price slightly, were mostly sold under the auctioneer’s hammer.

Good useful selections of merino wool types were offered during November at the Christchurch auctions with most interest shown towards well grown, well skirted, broadly classed (i.e. not over-classed), good sized lines, of

generally adult wools measuring from approximately 18 to 21 microns and of good tensile strength. A few wether clips offered in the aforementioned micron ranges drew good interest from buyers looking for robust wools displaying very good tensile strength.

A large number of merino hogget wools offered were generally in the extra-fine categories measuring from 14 to 17 microns.

These types were difficult to sell due to their mostly low tensile strength measurements, plus the market here continued to follow general price trends for similar micron wools offered for sale in other competing countries, such as Australia and South Africa.

The 2014 year seems to have whizzed by quicker than any year before it and the change in land use in many areas also seems to have been phenomenally quick. Subdivision of land and urban spread I have noticed and have often asked ‘where are the people coming from?’.
