Students of all ages are also involved by making trap tunnels or selling traps to their community, monitoring and recording information about predators, biodiversity and trapping catches, or analysing data.

Taranaki Regional Council education officer, Emily Roberts, said pupils have then been taking these skills home, encouraging their families to get on board with backyard trapping.

“Schools throughout the region have been incredibly supportive of the project.

“We’ve been working with some fantastic teachers, and the students have all loved playing an active role in better protecting native plants and animals.”

So far 29 schools have joined Towards Predator-Free Taranaki. Schools can sell the trap kits as a fundraiser, with funds going towards a school environmental project. Other community groups are also becoming involved, including Rotary groups and the Purangi Kiwi — East Taranaki Environment Trust. New Plymouth Boys High School principal Paul Veric said the work has real meaning and importance to some students, who for the first time are truly engaged and passionate about school work.

the importance of why they’re trapping and what it’s doing to support Taranaki’s biodiversity.”

Woodleigh School teacher Julie Neilson has also seen student’s enthusiasm and learning increase with the hands-on approach that Towards Predator-Free Taranaki provides, both within the school environment and in their back yards.

The high level of support and involvement of the schools, community groups, farmers, councils and residents of Taranaki is a measure of the success of the programme according to Towards Predator-Free Taranaki project manager Toby Shanley.

“The council is monitoring wildlife populations and diversity to measure changes that will indicate the success of Towards Predator-Free Taranaki as predators are removed from rural and urban landscapes. It’s a long term programme that will stretch over decades and the focus in this initial stage is to set up the trapping networks and put in place monitoring, so that we can measure the success of the project as it progresses.”

Traps are for sale from the Taranaki Regional Council and schools involved in the project as the programme rolls out across the region.

Fonterra business unit, NZAgbiz, recently won a commendation at the prestigious 2018 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards.

The Hamilton-based company was recognised for its work manufacturing livestock nutrition products, primarily using Fonterra ingredients. Since its foundation in 2008, NZAgbiz has operated on its circular business model, maximising the lifecycle and reusing of materials, as well as optimising usage.

NZAgbiz general manager, Greg Cate, said from the beginning the NZAgbiz aim was to better use Fonterra’s loss streams for the benefit of farmers and the co-op and avoid sending it to landfills.

Loss streams include materials such as oversized sifter particles, fine powder particles and cheese trims. As the material is not suitable for human consumption, it would generally end up as landfill waste.

“We take this material from Fonterra, and other dairy manufacturing plants, and rework it into useful, high-quality animal nutrition products that help livestock thrive.

Mr Cate said these products include calf milk replacers (CMRs), pig products and specialist animal health supplements such as probiotics, colostrum powder and electrolyte replacements.

Any product NZAgbiz cannot rework is on-sold as ingredients for stock feeds, soaps and biofuels.

CAREER CHANGE PROVIDES IDEAL LIFESTYLE Taranaki sharemilker Matthew Herbert balances work on the farm with overseeing five Young Farmers clubs in Taranaki, as well as holding the position of Federated Farmers Taranaki Sharemilkers’ Section chair. He has also learnt the importance of taking time off the farm to enjoy other activities.

M

atthew’s early introduction to agriculture was during school holidays on his grandparents’ Murray Grey stud near Forbes in New South Wales, Australia. On leaving secondary school, the bright lights of the city beckoned.

Matthew moved to Tasmania to work as an adviser for an Australian cabinet minister. After working in a highpressure environment, he and his New Zealand-born partner Brad Markham, a political reporter, began to look towards career changes.

The pair decided to shift across the Tasman to go dairy farming in 2013, taking up a contract milking position in the Waikato. In their relatively short time

in the dairy industry, Matthew and Brad won the 2016 Auckland-Hauraki Dairy Industry Share Farmer of the Year award.

Matthew said the win was a huge career highlight.

“The Dairy Industry Awards is such a great programme that really helped to focus on where the business was going.

The feedback from experienced farmers and rural professionals was invaluable.”

Three years ago Matthew and Brad moved to Taranaki, contract milking 380 cows.

Now they are in their first season 50/50 sharemilking on a 67ha farm near Manaia. A 21ha runoff around the corner from the farm grazes youngstock and grows extra feed.

Matthew describes their herd as a liquorice allsorts of breeds.

“We are breeding towards a Jerseycross cow, and also growing our small herd of pedigree Ayrshires. I love Ayrshires — they are tough as

nails and look great in the paddock.”

Following the move to Taranaki, Matthew’s involvement with Young Farmers took off. He is a Central Taranaki Young Farmers Club member and the Taranaki Regional chair. Matthew

also intends to run for the New Zealand Young Farmers national board.

“We organise a lot of fun events for our members from farm walks to indoor sports to the FMG Young Farmer of the Year competition,” said Matthew.

“Our aim is to give all of our members a chance to get off the farm and have fun while learning new skills and making friends at the same time.

“It’s really rewarding to see our clubs growing and different clubs putting on joint events together — this is where lifelong friendships come from.”

Matthew is the Taranaki Federated Farmers sharemilker chairperson too.

“I represent the interests of sharemilkers and contract milkers in Taranaki in Federated Farmers.

“Most of the work that Federated Farmers does is behind the scenes — negotiating with governments and councils for sensible regulations that let us get on with the job of farming sustainably.”

“Some exciting things that I’m helping to drive in Taranaki are seminars and workshops to help sharemilkers understand their rights and responsibilities around employment law, and also how to do due diligence on a prospective new job. It’s really important that sharemilkers have good relationships with their farm owners, and that they understand the contracts they’re signing.”

Matthew said Federated Farmers has traditionally been an organisation with an older generational membership base.

“There’s now more and more young people becoming involved in Federated Farmers as we see the importance of having good contracts and an industry which supports the progression of the

next generation. Many farm owners are in their positions because the sharemilking system allowed them to move up and grow their wealth — and I want to see them making that same opportunity available to my generation coming through the ranks now.”

Matthew has found his involvement with the broader agricultural sector and being able to influence the change he wants to see, extremely rewarding.

He said the opportunities to have a real impact in rural New Zealand are there for anyone who wants to get involved.

“I’m proud to be part of the generation leading the change in the New Zealand agri-foods sector.

“We are pushing for a sustainable farming model that focusses on our people and connecting with our customers all over the world.

“That’s what the future of our industry is all about.”

He’s also discovered the opportunities for progression in the New Zealand dairy sector exciting.

“You can get ahead quicker here than anywhere else in the world.”

Although involved with various aspects of governance within the dairy industry, Matthew finds pleasure in spending time on the farm working with his herd, implementing a breeding programme to grow its value and efficiency, and enjoying his pet cows.

“Having a cuddle with the girls always puts a smile on my face.”

Taking care of his mental health has been the biggest challenge during Matthew’s dairy farming career.

“A farmer’s life is dictated by a lot of

factors outside of our control, and it can be easy for a bad season to take a real toll on your mental wellbeing.”

It has made him aware of the importance of getting off the farm to spend time with people and participate in other activities.

“There is more to life than work and the most important lesson I’ve learnt is that you have to look after yourself first.”

Matthew has found meeting customers’ expectations and adapting far ming practices accordingly, challenging.

“The reward for that is that we continue to produce the best food on the planet, and we look after our people and environment better than almost anywhere else.

“New Zealand’s dairy industry has been really great to me. I’ve made lifelong friends, and built great networks right around the country.”

Growing up on Mangaotea, a large sheep and cattle farm near Tariki, sparked Zarrah Blackwell’s interest in agriculture. This passion has seen her shepherding in the Rangitikei, mustering in outback Australia, and then return to Taranaki’s hill country to establish a Murray Grey herd.

A

s soon as Zarrah finished the sixth form at high school, she knew which career path to follow.

She headed to Taratahi Institute of Agriculture in the Wairarapa to complete a level three in agriculture (sheep and beef), earning a qualification to back up her practical experience.

The next three years were spent as a shepherd in the Hunterville area before a slight change of direction saw Zarrah move to the South Island to work for Combined Rural Traders (now Farmlands).

At the start of 2013, Zarrah travelled to Australia as the start of her overseas experience (OE).

Zarrah said the plan was six months on a cattle station, then head to the

United Kingdom and Europe for two years with her cousin Lisa.

Those plans changed when Zarrah ended up working eight months in Western Australia’s Kimberley region.

She then travelled to the United Kingdom and Europe for four months.

“I couldn’t get the outback out of my head, so I headed back for another three or so years,” she said.

During Zarrah’s first year in the Kimberley region, she worked on a family-owned property, Jubilee Downs.

Work for Liveringa Pastoral Company followed, first as a ringer/station hand at Liveringa, then onto neighbouring Nerrima Station — also owned by the same company. Zarrah was head stockman at Nerrima, running stock camps for six people and organising the day-to-day work for the crew and

musters with the helicopter pilots.

“I loved the mustering — all done with horses and helicopters,” said Zarrah.

“Nothing better than getting the horses saddled and loaded onto the truck, to get out to the paddocks and hear the helicopters taking off at dawn.”

Zarrah found the isolated location challenging, but a good team made all the difference.

“There were about four campdraft and rodeo weekends run during the mustering season, from the start of April until the end of October.

“After being flat out working every day, these were a good chance to get out and have a social time and meet new people, while having some good competitiveness thrown in there.”

During the winter of 2017, Zarrah returned to Mangaotea to help with calving and ended up staying.

“My dad Robin, and my step mum Jacqueline were running a small Murray Grey stud along with the better known Mangaotea Herefords and Angus — but the Murrays weren’t getting as much time, so I thought I could take them over.

“I purchased my first cows in 2016, and have gone on from there.

“Murrays have a great temperament and are really suitable for our system here. Plus their calves are the cutest of all the breeds.”

The Mangaotea home farm covers 339ha effective of predominantly flat and rolling, through to steeper hill country. Although the area is traditionally summer safe, last year was an exception.

Zarrah said with the seasons changing, the benefits of Mangaotea being summer safe can no longer be relied on. She also leases 90ha of flat to rolling country in Te Popo. Winters are normally wet, but mild at Mangaotea.

Zarrah spent more than three years working in Western Australia’s Kimberley region “The Mangaotea home farm has quite a bit of peat land so tends to hold on for quite a while if it does get dry — but my lease block at Te Popo is in a valley and is a heat trap in the summer.

“Facial eczema (FE) can be an issue, but none of our beef cattle are treated for this. We believe we are moving towards FE tolerance within the herds.”

Through buying in cattle from Allerby’s Kotare Stud near Inglewood, and the Clarke’s Yorkvale Stud in Levin, Zarrah’s Murray Grey herd has steadily grown.

She is aiming to breed Murray Greys with a great constitution and temperament, suitable for mating over dairy cattle.

“There’s a bit of variation within my herd, but it all takes time to uniform.”

Eventually, Zarrah would like to produce bulls for the national Murray Grey sale.

“I enjoy the challenge of stud breeding in general, improving every year with genetics and type.

“There are so many things you can work on, and everyone has their ideal type of animal — but as long as I am breeding a well put-together cow that can hold up through the seasons while rearing a good calf, I’ll be pretty happy.”

EXPERT RETIRES Dairying and family have always been at the centre of Ray Lawrence’s life. Now, after 40 years working with local dairy farmers to breed healthier and more efficient herds, Ray is set to retire from his field consultant and artificial insemination (AI) technician roles at CRV Ambreed.

ay has had a lifelong association with farming. He and his six siblings were raised on a 60-acre dairy farm in Oeo. In 1967, his Scottishborn parents sold the farm and moved to Hawera.

After five years working as a stock agent and a herd tester, Ray married Joyce, and the couple went sharemilking.

“My two years herd testing cemented my interest in dairy farming,” said Ray. “I had great mentors during that time; Freddy Hancock at Taragower Holstein Friesians, and Brian Kilpatrick

In 1976, during the couple’s sharemilking years, Ray won the South Taranaki Young Farmers Central Progressive Young Farmer of the Year.

Seven years later, when Ray was 27, they bought a farm.

Ray said that although he didn’t have a tertiary qualification, he knew that buying a farm was the right thing to do for him and Joyce.

“I always knew cows were going to be part of my career,” said Ray.

“I wanted to work for myself, make my own decisions and my own mistakes.”

One of Ray’s career highlights was having the highest production herd in Taranaki for three to four years.

When Ray and Joyce bought their farm, the mortgage interest rate was 13%. However, the early 1980s were challenging times as interest rates soared to 21%. Hard work and determination saw the Lawrences make it through and Ray credits his parents for instilling a good work ethic. The couple also raised four children who are all well-educated and successful in their chosen professions. Ray’s association with CRV Ambreed also began in 1976, when he trained in AI and began using CRV Ambreed genetics in his dairy herd. Seven years later, Ray started working as a Stratford-Eltham field consultant and eventually took hold of the broader Taranaki region in 1991 as the area manager.

He has always been passionate about helping farmers breed a healthy, longlasting herd through pedigree bulls. This enthusiasm was behind the motivation for him to stay in the game for so long.

“There’s nothing more gratifying than to drive around the region each year and see the calves in the paddock that I’ve had a part in creating. Still, walking away from the relationships I’ve built with clients will be the hardest part about retiring.”

Ray said it has been incredible to see new technologies coming through over the years that have significantly improved the industry.

“Tools like SireMatch that have supported farmers to breed from good cow families and prevent issues like inbreeding and genetic defects have

been a real game-changer, I’d like to see the wider industry herd testing more in the future to make sure we all have access to better data and that we can improve our whole industry.” he said.

CRV Oceania sales and marketing manager Mathew Macfie said Ray’s legacy will be visible on farms in the Taranaki region for many years to come.

“His knowledge of cow families and pedigrees, in particular, has meant that he has been called upon many times to help build the perfect bull team for many customers,” said Mr Macfie.

“Looking around the dairy farms in Taranaki, it is not hard to see the kind of cow or herd that Ray is proud to have been associated with and help build.”

Although Ray is putting away his AI gloves, he will continue to help out on the farm. Farming runs deep in the Lawrence family bloodlines, tracing way back to the 1660s. His son Hayden, the 16th generation farmer in the family, bought the property last year.

“After all these years I can walk away knowing that I’ve done my part — but I’ll still have my finger in farm life doing the odd bit of work on my son’s farm,” he said.

He attributes the majority of his career success to Joyce who has supported him along the way.

The next chapter in Ray’s life will centre around his family; Joyce, his children and grandchildren. He also has some long-awaited travel planned and will continue volunteer work with Lake Rotokauri Trust and the Lions Club in Eltham.

Ray is currently imparting his knowledge with Daniel Crowley who will become CRV Ambreed’s new field consultant for the area.

Summertime is ‘watch time’ with Biosecurity New Zealand and the Department of Conservation asking the public to check their local myrtle plants to help track the spread of myrtle rust, with the disease likely to be more active during warmer weather and likely to spread to new areas where it hasn’t been seen before.

Plants including pohutukawa, rata, manuka, kanuka and ramarama are vulnerable to the disease. The fungus, which is mainly spread by wind, generally infects shoots, buds, and young leaves of myrtle plants. Infected plants show typical symptoms including bright yellow powdery spots on the underside of leaves.

If you think you see symptoms of myrtle rust remember to not touch the plant or collect samples, but take pictures and report it to Biosecurity New Zealand’s Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline on 0800 80 99 66.

As of December the disease has been confirmed on 811 properties across most of the North Island and upper areas of the South Island. Taranaki, Auckland and Bay of Plenty are the most seriously affected areas.

Biosecurity New Zealand’s manager for recovery and pest management, John Sanson, says a cross-sector working group has developed a national longterm management plan for myrtle rust.

“This working group includes members from Biosecurity New Zealand, the Department of Conservation, Maori organisations with an interest in biosecurity, the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, regional councils, and the Project Crimson Trust.

“The group has provided recommendations on agreed goals that will underpin our collective approach to managing myrtle rust. We are also investing significantly in scientific research to develop new tools, build understanding of myrtle rust and

People are reminded to check online purchases after an infestation of Brown Marmorated stink bugs recently got through border biosecurity checks.

MPI says this is a warning to people purchasing items over the internet and with the booming uptake in couriers delivering parcels from overseas, MPI Biosecurity’s are encouraging people to take the right steps if they find insects or plant material in their packages.

A man recently found 26 Brown Marmorated stink bugs in a box of shoes ordered over the internet. The bugs got through biosecurity measures at the New Zealand border. On opening the parcel, the man immediately took the shoes and wrapping to his bathroom, closed the door and window, and called

Biosecurity is critical for many people’s jobs, and livelihoods rely on healthy agriculture and orchards.

It is not physically possible for MPI to check every parcel, so all New Zealanders need to be biosecurity watchdogs and alert MPI immediately if you find insects or plant material in any parcel from overseas.

The stink bug is a major problem in parts of North America after being accidentally introduced from Asia. It is also established in Europe and South America, and many insecticides are not effective controlling it. There are also other insects and plant pests that have the potential to ruin crops or native plants.

The adults are approximately the size of a $1 coin and have white banding on the antennae, alternate black and white markings on the abdomen and the eggs that are

light green, barrel-shaped and found in clusters of 20 to 30.

Real Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

After more than ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started

by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”.

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs:

It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car.

Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when

muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

BACK or NECK PAIN? Here in New Zealand,

Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores.

Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse.

Farmers and lifestyle block owners are reminded that although summer is a busy time it is also among the most hazardous periods for accidents.

According to data from ACC almost 550 farmers suffered injuries serious enough to take at least a week off work over the last summer, while there were three fatalities on farms. The major causes of injuries were trips, slips and falls, being hit or bitten by animals, hit by moving objects, and incidents involving vehicles.

“The summer is a hugely productive time for farmers, and a time when family and visitors are often on the farm too,” says WorkSafe’s Agricultural lead Al McCone.

“We are encouraging farmers to focus on reducing the critical risk of working in and around farm vehicles. Take a few minutes to think about the best vehicle for the job you or your workers are doing and the terrain you are going to be driving over.

“Think about the locations of ditches, slopes or furrows. That might mean going back to the shed to switch vehicles, or going on foot. Operator protective devices, like roll over protection and the use of seat belts in vehicles are key areas farmers can reduce the likelihood of an accident. Many tractor fatalities can be prevented by the driver wearing the seat belt.

“You should also always check around farm vehicles before reversing — that is especially important in summer with more children out and about.”

Sun exposure is also a major hazard with New Zealand having the highest overall melanoma skin cancer rate in the world.

Research shows that one in four New Zealand farmers have suffered skin cancer. Farmer, rugby legend, and Safer Farms Ambassador Richard Loe, says he has changed his behaviours around sun safety.

“Sun safety really isn’t onerous, it is as simple as slipping on a shirt with long sleeves and wearing a hat with a wide brim or a cap with flaps — more people get sunburned on the face and neck than any other part of the body.

“Slop on plenty of sunscreen at least 20-minutes before going out, use at least SPF 30 and take the bottle with you and reapply every couple of hours — especially if you have been doing sweaty work.

“If you have got jobs you can do in shade or under cover, plan them for the middle of the day when the sun’s UV levels are higher — and the exposed jobs for early or later, and don’t forget to protect your eyes from UV radiation — with wrap-round sunglasses with a good sun protection rating.”
