Young farmers across the Taranaki/ Manawatu region are gearing up to battle it out in the ANZ Young Farmer of the Year regional final on March 1.

Four district finals were held recently in Taranaki, Manawatu and Horowhenua to find the top contestants to compete at the regional final.

“A healthy number of competitors took part in each District Final and a great time was had by all,” said spokesperson Sam Tennent.

Bank of New Zealand Agribusiness graduate Cameron Shaw (Massey Club) and beef and cropping farm manager Nigel Will (Marton Club) took first and second placings at the Taranaki Open District final in Inglewood, securing spots in the regional contest. Central Taranaki representatives, Taratahi Campus programme manager Roger Dettling and sharemilker Karl Dean, dominated the second Taranaki District Final in Inglewood to earn regional positions. Sharemilker and 2011 Grand Finalist Cam Brown (Fitzherbert Club) and Luke Renton (Opiki Club) both qualified from the Manawatu District Final. And Ballance Agri-nutrients technical sales representative Calvin Ball

(Massey Club) and sheep and beef farm manager Pete Fitz-Herbert (Marton Club) also secured positions at the Manawatu Open Distict Final.

The Taranaki/Manawatu regional final daytime event will be held on the Railway Land in Palmerston North on March 1.

Porina impacting lower North Island pastures

Porina caterpillars are making their presence felt in the lower North Island, particularly in the Rangitikei and Manawatu regions.

reaching up to 30cm in depth. Porina caterpillars can vary in size, growing up to 50mm.

Mr Ferguson said usually farmers only become aware of porina when damage starts to appear.

Mr Ferguson said the caterpillars emerge from these burrows at night to feed.

“However sampling pastures at risk in February/March can identify pastures that could potentially be damaged before damage shows.

“They cut grass and clover leaves at the base of the plant and drag these into their burrows where they will feed on them for the next few days.”

During spring and summer the moths fly in larger numbers, laying up to 3000 eggs each. Pasture damage caused by the caterpillars is most noticeable from April until September.

“Monitoring moth flights can be a very useful indicator of porina presence in a district and a critical indicator of when control measures should be applied.”

Mr Ferguson recommends using Pest Alert on www.pestweb.co.nz as a tool to help farmers manage porina.

Agresearch Invermay scientist Colin Ferguson said this is most likely as a result of particularly dry conditions three summers ago.

These insects, native to New Zealand, are generally present in most areas but usually at unnoticeable levels.

Mr Ferguson said low levels of porina are maintained through association with naturally occurring diseases which exert natural population regulation.

“When this disease association is disrupted, outbreaks of porina occur two to four years after the disruption.

“These disruptions are when, for some reason, the porina populations drop to very low levels, usually as a result of cultivation or drought.

He said porina numbers build up again over the next two to three years and do so more quickly than the disease organisms.

“We then see outbreaks of porina two to four years after these events.”

The populations reduce again when the diseases have also built up to high levels and natural porina population regulation is re-established.

“With cultivation, damage is on a paddock scale and occurs in paddocks

two to four years after cultivation,” said Mr Ferguson.

“But following drought it is on district or region scale and pastures of all ages can be affected.”

Stock manager Pete Fitz-Herbert recently returned from a Beef and Lamb scholarship to Canada with a new-found appreciation for New Zealand’s farming systems, and a realisation of how this country fits into the world’s food production and trade.

Pete grew up on the family’s 700 acre farm near Hunterville. The farm’s original 400 acres was a ballot property granted to Pete’s grandfather as a returned serviceman.

by a member of the Young Farmers’ staff,” he said.

“It was short notice but we had a week to produce a two minute video on our involvement in the beef industry and send this, with our CVs, to Young Farmers.”

Pete had just 22 days from the date he was informed of his success winning

the scholarship until he had to leave for Canada.

“I managed to conveniently fit between the end of our main lambing and hogget lambing so I up and left the old man in charge.”

The trip to Canada wasn’t Pete’s first venture overseas. In 2006 he spent

“Its members contribute 50 percent of the beef exported internationally.”

The Young Ranchers presented their views on sustainability and the benefits of the investment in future leaders and the Young Ranchers programme during the conference.

“The entire experience was eye-opening — a very different take in off-farm involvement,” said Pete. “I had the chance to meet and learn from some remarkable people.”

Pete found the New Zealand pastoral farming system clearly different to the beef production systems that operate in North America.

“There are producers that are cow-calf breeding operators and then feedlot operators that finish cattle mainly on corn,” he said. “It’s very much a two-step system.”

Pete, who is the currently chairman of the Marton Young Farmers Club, said his long term plans are to grow the family farm, turning it into a farming business with a family base.

As part of the Young Ranchers’ programme, the group visited a feedlot and vineyard in the Okanagan Valley, and toured Canada’s largest station — the 500,000 acre Douglas Lake Ranch

In preparation for the Young Ranchers’ programme, Pete learnt more about New Zealand’s own beef industry, spending time with Beef and Lamb New Zealand’s Farmer Director Ben O’Brien and General Manager Market Access James Parsons.

He said this was remarkably valuable in learning about the issues that the beef industry faces.

The Young Ranchers’ programme, held in conjunction with the Five Nations Beef Alliances (FNBA) annual conference in Canada, hosted representatives from Mexico, Canada, USA, Australia and New Zealand.

Pete said this provided an opportunity to create understanding with each other.

As part of the programme, the group visited a feedlot and vineyard in the Okanagan Valley, and toured Canada’s largest station — the 500,000 acre Douglas Lake Ranch.

“The exposure to this experience, created for me a real awareness of the issues affecting the beef industry, the similarity and differences of our international markets and competitors.”

Pete said the FNBA conference in Banff covered a range of topics from traceability to trade barriers.

The programme started in Vancouver with each of the participating countries presenting a power point on their beef industry, its advantages and challenges.

“It became remarkably clear that although thousands of miles apart in some vague version of the same industry, we had common goals and challenges

from issues with trade barriers, limited resources, to the need for sustainable land use.”

He said the Beef and Lamb scholarship was a great experience, providing a real view into the backroom of the industry and a look at the complexities of trade issue.

Originally from Zimbabwe, the Trigg family moved to Taranaki 16 years ago, settling on a lifestyle block at Oakura. A short time later they bought some land at Pukearuhe and planted avocados. But when White Cliffs Brewing Company near

business was to change the name to mike’s Organic Brewery.

Since then they’ve set to work to develop and grow the business. Buildings have been enlarged; the brewing capacity has been increased, quality improved, new retail areas have been completed, a cafe opened, and the outdoor area landscaped.

In addition the brand and packaging have been given an overhaul, an annual Oktoberfest organised and 18 new beers introduced.

“We have grown the business from a very small base, by 25 to 30 percent annually, and are on track to profitability this year,” said Ron. Over 100,000 litres of beer will be produced at mike’s Organic Brewery this year with a core range of eight certified organic and 10 newly released non-organic beers.

Ron said beer competitions concentrate on judging the beers against particular style guidelines.

“We have a few beers that conform with these styles, but I typically like to brew beers that are quite bold, full of flavour, but not normally conforming to a specific style.

“For me the greatest reward is seeing people enjoy the beers, and ultimately having to keep up with demand when they keep buying them.”

The Trigg family are certainly starting to see their efforts recognised with more retailers now stocking the beer produced by mike’s Organic Brewery.

“Getting the retailers to stock the beers in the early days was very challenging,” said Ron. “Now it’s a whole lot easier.

“Since more people know the products and are asking for them, retailers are now making the first point of contact to stock the beers.”

Common Muscle Problems The two most common chronic muscle problems are Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) and Fibromyalgia (FM). Both FM and PMR are autoimmune diseases and result in muscle pain but that is about where the similarities stop.

PMR mostly affects those over 60 and common symptoms are stiffness and pain commonly around the neck and shoulders especially in the mornings. Around 20% of people with PMR also develop Temporal Arteritis.

This is caused by inflammation of the major arteries which pass through the temple causing vision problems and even blindness.

The major medical therapy is the steroid prednisone which blocks the production of inflammatory cytokines usually with a rapid reduction in symptoms. Many recover in a year or so but others have this for an extended period or find that it recurs after a period of remission. People on statin medicines need to be aware that these can exacerbate PMR symptoms which is why I invariably add CoQ10 to those with PMR who take statins.

Nutritional therapy complements the effects of prednisone by reducing immune system production of inflammatory chemicals.

We add a wide range of antioxidant and antiinflammatory compounds to assist energy production and to lower inflammation.

Serious fatigue is a feature of

PMR and increases in energy is often the first benefit people feel from nutritional therapy.

FM is a lot more complex.

These are often referred to as FM syndromes as they involve other problems especially Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

There are relatively few medical treatment options but the most common are tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline taken in single evening doses to treat both pain and insomnia.

FM is more difficult to treat with nutritional therapy as it is not a simple inflammatory problem. It appears that muscle mitochondria are damaged by free radicals which impair muscle fibre function which reduces energy and causes pain (M. Cordero et al, 2010). I have found people get real benefits from intensive multiantioxidant therapy including CoQ10, OPC, resveratrol and many others. I always add broad spectrum vitamin and minerals and often high dose MSM before bed to help with muscle oxygenation.

Curiously, as with PMR people with FM often notice an improvement in energy before any reduction in pain. Give me a call if you need help.

Jamie has built up a team of dogs and competed in Hunterville’s Shepherds’ Shemozzle several times with her main Huntaway, Phlex

“I spent all school holidays working here and during uni, split my time working casual at home and across the road on Papanui Station,” said Jamie.

After completing her third year examinations, studying towards a Bachelor of Applied Science majoring in agriculture at Massey University, Jamie spent the summer shepherding at Papanui Station. She gathered together a small team of dogs then started working at Makaraka, a property owned by the late Jim Bull.

One year later, Jamie had to leave her employment to undergo knee reconstruction and took six months to recuperate.

She returned home and divided her time working on a casual basis at both Wharenui and Papanui Stations.

During the 2010 winter, Jamie worked on a cattle station in Queensland before discovering in her final two weeks of work that she had broken her ankle and torn her groin tendon a few months earlier.

“So I left after four months as I wanted to get my ankle back to normal.”

“When I got back, ever the sucker for punishment, I did two shearing courses and went shearing for the summer in Hunterville.”

Jamie then travelled to the United Kingdom, did shearing in England, and travelled through Spain and France.

She returned to a shepherding position at Ferndale Station — a 6000 acre extensive hill country property near Hunterville.

“Mustering is done on horseback and as a shepherd I’m involved in all aspects on the farm,” said Jamie.

“I loved shearing but struggled to ride as I was usually too tired to work a horse after a day’s shearing, so shepherding fits better with my lifestyle.”

“I love the fact that each day is different from the last,” said Jamie.

“Seldom do you find yourself doing the same thing day in, day out.”

Jamie’s passion for animals and the outdoors includes showjumping up to three horses during the summer months and hunting during the winter.

“I hunt with the Rangitikei Hunt Club and do as much whipping as I can up the front with the huntsman.”

Jamie’s main horse, Kobi, is a home-bred part Clydesdale, currently competing at 1.30m. She is also training two young Clydesdale/stationbred horses.

Social netball and running feature in Jamie’s spare time too.

Jamie won the women’s section again at last year’s Shepherds’ Shemozzle and placed 10th overall with her dog Phlex.

“I got Phlex as a pup at the start of 2006 and she has done each shemozzle with me since,” said Jamie.

“She is my main Huntaway and my first dog so is an awesome work dog but also a bit of a family pet.”

Jamie enjoys being able to compete openly with the men during the Shepherds’ Shemozzle.

“Good to show them that girls are just as tough,” she said.

“Also it is a huge social day and night to meet up with friends from all over the country.”

Preparations are in full swing and the countdown is on for this year’s annual Central Districts Field Days.

Recognised as one of the largest regional agricultural field days in New Zealand, the event’s central location at Manfeild Park makes it an ideal location to cater for the lower North Island.

Central Districts Field Days Event Manager Cheryl Riddell said visitors can travel, visit and return within a day, update themselves on what's new for 2013 or catch-up with exhibitors and friends.

The dates of New Zealand’s three regional field days — Northland, Central Districts and the South Island Agricultural Field Days — have now been co-ordinated to enable exhibitors to attend all three.

This year’s Central Districts Field Days has been brought forward to run from March 7-9.

“We have moved one week earlier as a one off this year to work in with South Island Field Days so our exhibitors have time to move between the two islands.”

Ms Riddell said the field days are on track with over 500 exhibitors from all over New Zealand and a couple of new ones from Australia lined up.

Regular features set to return to the field days, including Stihl TimberAces, the Central Districts Double Power Fencing competition, the tractorpull event, National Excavator competition, and the vintage tractor and machinery display, are certain to provide plenty of entertainment. These features will continue daily throughout the event.

The Best of Beef competition will also run alongside the field days with several cattle breeds on show.

“A Taranaki dairy farmer won it last year to the delight of his family,” she said.

On the final afternoon of the event, one lucky entrant in the Central Districts Field Days competition will take home a Suzuki ATV and Brent Smith trailer filled with farm and home-related products.

The competition is open to anyone over the age of 18 years and from a rural address.

Gates open at 8.30am each day, closing at 4.30pm on March 7-8. Gates close at 4pm on the final day of the event.

Injuries on the farm cost you time and money When there is real work to be done, worrying about health and safety can seem an unproductive use of your time.

But it is worth remembering that good health and safety practices can bring real benefits to your business, and even improve the bottom line.

Homeopathy a farming alternative Tineke Verkade trained and qualified as a registered naturopath and a medical herbalist. She has been in private practice since 1991 where several of her patients were dairy farmers and as a result of their requests she also started to treat dairy cows.

Animal movements account for around 30 per cent of new herd TB infections, so it is important that herd owners are aware of their obligations and the disease risk in their area when moving stock off, or onto, their property.

Cattle and deer herd owners can help the AHB move towards a TBfree New Zealand by registering their herd, meeting their testing requirements, correctly tagging their animals and completing Animal Status Declaration (ASD) forms for all stock movements. Only by working together can we eradicate the disease from New Zealand.

Tim Porter became an inventor in the same way as most Kiwi blokes — tinkering from an early age with motors, fascinated with the smell of petrol burning and the possibilities of speed and power.

But while most men end up creating the same old go-karts and motorised beer coolers, Tim’s mind struck upon an inspiration which changed the course of his life. Preventing facial eczema Facial Eczema is a disease caused by fungal spores from the fungus Pithomyces chartarum that produce a toxin which when ingested by cattle can lead to the damage of liver and bile ducts. This fungus (FE) can cause lower milk production and occasionally death from liver damage. The damaged liver is unable to rid the body of wastes and the breakdown product of chlorophyll build up in the body causing sensitivity to sunlight, which can then lead to inflammation of the skin.

The first signs of FE usually show up as a drop in milk production soon after the intake of toxic spores (sub clinical FE), other signs may include cows being restless at milking time, seeking shade and licking their udder. As facial eczema becomes more obvious, another drop in milk production may be seen and exposed un-pigmented skin may thicken and peel, especially prone are the white areas on cattle, teats and udder and inside the hind legs may also be affected. It is important to remember that not all animals may show physical signs of clinical facial eczema, but some may have had liver damage occur (sub clinical FE).

Facial Eczema spores are produced when minimum grass temperature are above 12° for two or three nights and humidity is usually high, this can occur in the months (January to May). The fungus grows on soft matter in the base

of the pasture, so hard grazing during this period of increased spore activity may also increase the risk of spore uptake by cattle.

Prevention should start early with Zinc treatment, ideally two to three weeks before the spore growth danger period, for the most beneficial protection.

One product that is suitable is Zinc 50 from Vetpak, it is a free flowing Zinc Oxide 50% liquid suspension to aid in the treatment and prevention of Facial Eczema in cattle and sheep, and is ideally suited for drenching or adding through an inline water medication system. Zinc 50 is suitable for long term daily dosing until the pasture to be grazed is safe from fungal spores.

Zinc 50 has a nil milk withhold period and is suitable for dairy cows. Zinc 50 is available from your local veterinarian.

Another product in the Vetpak stable is Green Apple Flavouring, which is a ready to use liquid flavour additive designed to mask unpleasant tastes such as Zinc Oxide.

Green Apple can be added to drinking water, dry feed or mineral drenches such as Zinc Oxide or Magnesium Sulphate/ Chlorides and this makes it an ideal partner when using Zinc products to treat Facial Eczema.

Taranaki Quad Riders Club to host NZ Enduro A riders' briefing will be held at 10am just prior to the race which is set to start at 10.30am. Lunch and prizegiving follows.

The New Zealand Quad Enduro, organised by the Taranaki Quad Riders Club, will put rider’s skills to the test as they race to cross the finish line.

An entry fee of $60 per rider includes lunch and there are still several spaces available.

Food vouchers will be available on the day at $10 for nonriders. Camping is available and toilet facilities will be on-site.

The Taranaki Quad Riders Club which was established three years ago, meet on a monthly basis and hold a variety of rides.

The New Zealand Quad Enduro, now into its third year, will be held at Glen Nui Station east of Eltham on April 14

Kim said people of all ages have joined the club.

Taranaki Quad Riders Club president Kim Reid, said the enduro will run Le Mans style.

“We are always looking for new members who want to have a bit of fun.”

“Each rider, one minute apart, with a shotgun start — you run five metres, start bike and go.”

Better quality with higher production There is a widespread misconception that improving the quality of what we grow and produce from the land will result in lower volumes.

This argument is used by supporters and users of conventional growing systems to justify a regime that increasingly struggles with the speed and magnitude of the changes now required.

Our soils are naturally not suited to the production of a wide range of fruit, vegetables, crops and pasture, so an understanding of the nutrient requirements of each is necessary. Some of that knowledge is available and the rest is being steadily gained through observation and measurement.

One other thing I want to mention is water. Cows would do much better if they had plenty of access to water. Often when they leave the paddock for milking they don’t have any water available until they get back into the paddock.

That is way too long, especially on hot days. I wonder how it would go if there were single drinking pots in every stand on the platform in the cow shed. It would be a good way to get cows onto the platform and may even work better than meal. I would be very interested in receiving your feedback on this topic.

Does diet affect hoof health As we now are in the holiday season on the cow in picture 1. The sole ulcer in it may be a good time to think about the picture is just an advanced stage of food. Food for cows, I mean! There is a normal bruise. If the bruising happens still a lot of discussion on whether or because of external force then why do not diet has an effect on hoof health. If they look so similar? If they were caused we think about the many different ways by standing on stones then I would our human bodies can react to various expect a much more even pattern over foods and the outward symptoms we the whole claw. Sometimes I clean the observe, then it is not illogical to also wall of the claw with my grinder just to think that our cows can present with see what symptoms can be found there.

Admittedly, in some of those cows you have to look carefully for the haemorrhage but, nevertheless it is there. The interesting thing is that most cows have the same pattern of haemorrhage where the main bruise is in the spot where the sole ulcer is shown
