annum, much lower than the net-zero figure for long-lived greenhouse gasses, and much lower than the targets the government has set.

“The report makes it clear that New Zealand was right to show global leadership when adopting split long and short-lived greenhouse gas targets.”

Mr Hoggard said this needs to be followed up and the current methane reduction targets adjusted to ones that are zero-carbon equivalent.

“We also need to split our emissions budgets to make sure climate policy treats short and long-lived emissions differently in a manner consistent with split gas targets.

“As is also clear from the report, the science on stable methane emissions is settled.

“It is simply misleading to portray agriculture to be almost half of New Zealand’s warming, given that 80% of agricultural emissions are short-lived biogenic methane. Biogenic methane only needs to slightly reduce to be zero carbon equivalent, and that has been the case in New Zealand for well over a decade.”

New Zealand farmers have invested tens of millions of dollars in research since 2003, recognising the enormous potential a breakthrough technology presents for farmers, their animals, consumers and the environment.

“We now need the government to enable this innovation.”

Federated Farmers president and climate change spokesperson Andrew Hoggard said the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report had been described as a code red for humanity.

“We need to take that seriously.”

Mr Hoggard said New Zealand’s emissions per kilogram of meat and milk produced are world-leading.

“New Zealand farmers are committed to further improving on this lead.”

Science and innovation, if enabled by the government, has the potential to improve on-farm performance while also cutting emissions. Breeding advances, a cutting-edge New Zealand developed GMO ryegrass, the nitrification inhibitor DCD and livestock methane inhibitors such as 3-NOP are just some of the options available or showing great promise. Several of these have run into government regulatory roadblocks.

“Feds sent a submission to the government on environmental inhibitors some 18 months ago. We’ve heard next to nothing on their consideration of this.”

Mr Hoggard said it was pleasing to note the IPCC gives recognition to an area of science that Feds has been advancing for several years: the current standard metric for measuring the global warming impact of methane is flawed.

“The reductions in livestock methane required to ensure no additional warming impact are in the order of 0.3% per

Worker shortage campaign launched

A campaign has been launched to help address New Zealand’s chronic employee shortage in the meat processing and exporting sector.

The Meat your Career campaign, developed by the Meat Industry Association, aims to highlight the wide range of different employment opportunities available in the sector. A website features videos of people working in the industry talking about their roles. It also includes a description of the types of positions available and guidance on remuneration.

A social media campaign, which is supporting the recruitment drive, targets potential employees and raises awareness of the sector’s career opportunities.

MIA chief executive Sirma Karapeeva said the industry is about 2,000 workers short.

“This results in reduced production and robs New Zealand of important export revenue. This campaign is focussed on letting Kiwis know our innovative and progressive sector is at the cutting-edge of food manufacturing.

“Our people are world leaders in producing and exporting quality and nutritious food to more than 100 markets across the globe. We offer a range of exciting roles, competitive salaries, strong career pathways and an incredibly diverse workforce.”

Ms Karapeeva said there are roles in the industry for those without any formal qualifications or experience, as well as

those who have completed training, tertiary and post-graduate study.

“We have graduates working in many areas of the industry including sales and marketing, international trade, communications, IT, new product development and food science. There are strong career paths to enable graduates to progress from entry-level to more senior and management roles.

“There are also many opportunities in processing for people of different ages, stages of life and levels of experience, from school leavers to those looking for a career change or a return to the workplace.

“Coming in at entry-level, you will not require any formal qualifications as plenty of training will be provided, leading to formal NZQA qualifications.

There is also the potential to progress to leadership/supervisory roles as well as apprenticeships.

“Meat processing workers do a variety of tasks and are relatively well paid.”

Ms Karapeeva said the sector invests heavily in training and upskilling.

“Our industry is the largest on the job trainer in the country. While we invest heavily in automation and technology, many of the processing tasks need to be done by a person and cannot easily be automated.”

by Denise Gunn FMG Young Farmer of the Year, Jake Jarman, won the 2021 competition on his first attempt.

finance and business, Jake decided to study agricultural commerce and headed to Lincoln University. Between semesters, he regularly travelled back to Taranaki to help out on the family farm.

In 2017, while studying at Lincoln University, Jake won a Silver Fern Farms Plate to Pasture Youth scholarship for the western North Island region. Six inaugural Plate to Pasture Youth Scholarships were awarded that year, with each recipient receiving $5,000 to further their careers in the sector. After graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce (Agriculture), Jake enrolled in the Master of Agricultural Science at Massey University.

“I was fortunate to receive a DairyNZ Masters scholarship for this study,” said Jake.

ake was raised on his family’s dairy farm south of Inglewood. The 180ha farm, owned by Jake’s grandparents, Fred and Wendy Marshall, has been in the family since the early 1900s. Fred and Wendy continue to work on the farm every day.

Following several years as lower order sharemilkers, Jake’s parents, Paul and Dale Jarman bought a 50% share of the 420 mixed breed herd and moved into a 50:50 role.

“My dad has also gone back to a fulltime plumbing job in Inglewood, and my parents have employed a farm worker,” said Jake.

The 24-year-old said his passion for agriculture grew while attending high school. With additional interests in

Jake wants to be a great ambassador for New Zealand Young Farmers

As part of this study, Jake worked alongside DairyNZ and Dairy Trust Taranaki. His research looked at using an extended lactation to transition cows, from spring to autumn calving, in south Taranaki.

“My Masters took 18 months to complete. I spent a year of this time based in Hamilton and studying out of the DairyNZ head office up there.”

In July last year, Jake handed in his thesis and moved home to Inglewood.

He worked part-time as a farm systems research graduate on a supplementary feeding project for Dairy Trust Taranaki. He also worked part-time on the family farm.

“During my time there, I collated, analysed and presented the data from their Living below the Fat Evaluation

Index (FEI) experiment. This farm systems experiment compared three farmlets with different supplementary feed inputs and the effect on the FEI, production and profit.”

Young Farmers has played a significant part in Jake’s life. While at Lincoln University, he served as both social media manager and treasurer of the Lincoln Young Farmers. When living in Hamilton, he was a member of Hamilton City Young Farmers and joined the Inglewood Young Farmers after moving back to Taranaki.

Jake was determined to give the FMG Young Farmer of the Year his best shot after initially signing up to the contest to just give it a go. In the lead-up, he took on a mixture of practical and theorybased preparation.

“Unfortunately, I broke my arm playing rugby 12 weeks before the competition, so I was unable to do as much practical preparation as I wanted to.”

The week before the competition, Jake managed to spend a day with a fencer, butcher and a fertiliser representative.

He also took on some welding experience with an engineer, as well as driving tractors and combine harvesters at New Holland.

“Theory preparation was mainly based around the market innovation project we were given to do in the lead-up.

“I had some mates put together some good quiz questions for me to practise on.”

Jake also took up some live quiz practice with the Inglewood Young Farmers.

“I was happy that I gave everything a go to the best of my ability and be competitive. I loved the practical day; the challenge of having to multitask under time pressure and be a bit strategic.”

Jake said he wants to be a great ambassador for New Zealand Young Farmers.

“I want to give back to New Zealand Young Farmers through helping with events and being involved in club committees.”

Earlier this year, Jake took up a relationship associate position in the rural lending team with ANZ in Ashburton.

Eventually, he aims to own land for producing food and fibre.

“I would like to become a leader in the agricultural industry, helping it be the best in the world.”

ince then, the trio has bought more horses, Alice and Hollie have competed internationally, and Rebecca is now president of the Taranaki Western Riding Club.

It was through meeting the former club president while on the search for their first horse, that the family was introduced to the sport.

The Bruce family’s lifestyle block near Stratford provides plenty of space to train their four American Quarter Horses. An American Shetland Pony for Rebecca’s granddaughter completes the equine lineup. A few years back, Rebecca became ill and was unable to ride.

“Riding was just not something I thought I would be able to experience again. Even though I could not ride, I wanted my girls to know what it felt like to have a horse in their lives. There is nothing quite like the love between a girl and her horse.”

Rebecca said it also teaches them independence, patience, humbleness when things don’t go as planned, and putting a horse’s needs first.

“It develops amazing friendships too.

I can now ride again but still have my days when my body says no. I honestly can say that any of the western riders, or their support crew, are always on hand to help me any way they can. The days I show, they are there cheering myself and all competitors on along the sidelines.”

Through the club, both Alice and Hollie have represented New Zealand in a transTasman event and two world cups, one in the US and the other in Australia.

Teams of six from 22 countries compete in the world cup competitions, with the host country supplying horses for each team. No rider is allowed to show a horse they have previously ridden, so everyone is on an even level of competition.

“Many members have ridden for New Zealand as adults and as youths at these events. We even have gold, silver and bronze medal winners among them all.”

The Bruce family has found that although everyone is naturally competitive at a show, riders congratulate each other in the line-up.

Club members also help rookie riders to understand show class requirements, show preparation and correct fitting of tack.

“Western performance is about lifting one another up and cheering each other on, no matter the circumstance.

Sportsmanship is 110% in this industry.

The show tops are amazingly blingy too, which is cool.”

Taking on the club presidency has given Rebecca the opportunity to repay members for all they have done for her family. She is also able to give back, helping new riders and club members who attend club days and local shows.

“The Taranaki Western Riding Club is made up of families of all ages and sizes,” said Rebecca.

“There are lots of different classes to compete in, so there’s always something for everyone, even lead line classes for tiny tots.

“Club days are a great way of getting to know everyone and seeing what western riding is all about.”

Champion target shooter Stephanie McNair has her sights set on aiming for the top of the sport.

C

hampion target shooter Stephanie McNair has her sights set on aiming for the top of the sport. Earlier this year, the 17-year-old Palmerston North Girls’ High School (PNGHS) student was recognised at the Norwood New Zealand Rural Sports Awards, taking out two top awards.

In addition to the Fonterra Young New Zealand Rural Sportsperson of the Year Award, Stephanie also won the Norwood New Zealand Rural Sports Supreme Award for her contribution to the rural sporting community.

Stephanie first picked up a rifle when she was around eight years old, shooting on a rest (wooden block) at a local club in Dannevirke.

A few years later, as a year eight student, she began shooting in a jacket with a shoulder sling to support the rifle’s weight.

At the start of 2020, during the Covid-19 lockdown, she tried air rifle shooting from a standing position.

With her parents, Ruth and Robbie, keen rifle shooters, Stephanie has received plenty of coaching.

With both parents involved in target shooting, Stephanie grew up around the sport

“Both my parents were shooting before I was born,” said Stephanie.

“So, I kind of grew up around rifle shooting. I would go with my parents to the regional competitions before I had even begun shooting. When I got old enough, I decided that I wanted to give it a go and have been shooting ever since.

My dad has been my coach since I began shooting at age eight or nine.

“He has very extensive knowledge of the sport. I would not be as good of a shooter as I am if I had not had his help

and knowledge of the sport. He is a lefthanded shooter and I am as well, even though I am right-handed. So it works out well, as I can use his older rifles as lefthanded shooting equipment is hard to get a hold of.”

Stephanie’s mother, Ruth, represented New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games in Canada in 1994 and in Malaysia four years later.

“My mum is also a lot of help when it comes to shooting as well and is always willing to help me out.”

Stephanie’s sister, Caley, 15, also shoots, and her older brother, Lachie, 19, was involved in the sport before focussing on his Massey University studies. “Caley and I are both shooters for the Palmerston North Girls’ High School rifle shooting team, which won at the secondary school nationals last year.”

Stephanie is club captain of the Dannevirke Smallbore Rifle Club, which is run by her parents.

During the smallbore rifle shooting season, which runs from March to September, Stephanie shoots at the club’s indoor range. She also shoots at an outdoor rifle club in Norsewood during the October to February season.

“At home, my dad has set up an air rifle range of sorts, so I can practise without having to travel too far.”

Throughout the year, Stephanie travels throughout New Zealand to compete most weekends in indoor and outdoor competitions.

In February 2020, at the New Zealand Outdoor National Smallbore Shooting Championships, Stephanie broke the New Zealand junior and women’s record scores with 623.0. Her previous score of 617.3 was achieved at the nationals in Christchurch two years earlier. Stephanie’s top scores qualified her for the Open Slazenger/Wakefield New Zealand team.

During the New Zealand Indoor National Smallbore Shooting Championships, held in Palmerston North, Stephanie shot her first 400 score.

“I also shot my first 100.10. This is the highest score you can shoot on a single ten shot match.

“At this competition, I top-scored overall with a score of 400.30.”

Stephanie’s flair for target shooting has seen her win, and be highly placed in, many competitions, which featured top New Zealand shooters. She has also had international wins against teams from several countries.

“I hope to make more New Zealand teams at this year’s North v South indoor rifle shooting competition in August,” said Stephanie.

She would also like to win the national secondary schools competition, with the PNGHS rifle shooting team, for the second year in a row. Stephanie is planning to take a gap year in 2022 to

focus on shooting. She is also considering applying to a university in the US with a competitive rifle shooting team to shoot against other universities.

“They have sporting scholarships over there where I can study while being coached in rifle shooting,” she said.

Long-term goals include following her mother’s footsteps, aiming for eventual qualification in Commonwealth and Olympic Games outdoor rifle shooting and air rifle.

“Those would be two big goals that I would love to achieve.”

Airport in running for major award

The upgrade of New Plymouth’s airport is attracting global attention, with the facility in the running for a major international airport award.

Each year, airports, university campuses, passenger stations and sports stadiums are selected from hundreds of projects to compete in the Prix Versailles World Finale, recognising architecture and design.

New Plymouth Airport is among a lineup, which includes an $8 billion upgrade at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, Berlin’s Brandenburg Airport, Athens International Airport, Kazakhstan’s Hazrat Sultan International Airport, and the Philippines’ Clark International Airport. Prix Versailles secretary general Jerome Gouadain announced the six finalists for the award.

Airports and terminals are selected for their innovation, creativity, reflection of local heritage and energy efficiency.

Prix Versailles also honours the universal role the airports play in fostering social, economic and cultural exchanges.

New Plymouth Airport sits on the ancestral land of Taranaki’s Puketapu.

Hapū and members collaborated with the project team, design consultants, Beca consultants and Clelands builders to ensure their legacy was reflected.

The design encompasses the entire terminal with Tamaru (male) at the northern end, Rongoueroa (female) at the southern end, and a Tuahu panel in the centre with a figurine depicting their child Awa-Nui-A-Rangi.

Hapū member and cultural design lead Rangi Kipa said being named a Prix Versailles finalist was quite different to other awards the airport had received because it took a beyond the parochial view associated with New Zealand awards.

“It gives an international lens to what we have done and speaks to our innovation and culture while highlighting indigenous people,” he said.

Benefits of a good multi-supplement

(Part one) A good multi-supplement is one of the best health investments you can make. It will ensure your body has the nutrients needed to stay healthy.

Unfortunately, most are formulated as a once-a-day dose. That means that many of the bulkier compounds are either omitted or included in meaningless amounts. As an experienced formulator, I know it is impossible to provide sufficient nutrients to fit in a one a day product.

My multi-antioxidant/mineral/ vitamin has a dose of two capsules a day. A good multi should have all the important major and trace elements. I have a real concern about low levels of critical minerals such as selenium, zinc, copper and manganese as these are needed to build our antioxidant defence systems. Many diseases are linked to low levels of trace minerals.

Your multi should have a full B vitamin complex, in particular B6, folic acid and B12 as they combine to reduce homocysteine, which is a risk factor for heart disease and some forms of dementia. It should have meaningful levels of vitamin D for immunity. The regulations governing

vitamin D in supplements are archaic, so we should add extra Vitamin D in winter.

Vitamin E is the most important fat-soluble antioxidant. It should be in the natural d-alpha-tocopherol form, not the less effective synthetic dl-alpha-tocopherol.

Finally, it should contain the most potent antioxidants, especially grape seed extract. I know of only a few products that contain these potent antioxidants. My preferred grape seed extract (OPC) is the well-researched, and patented NZ made Oxi-fend®.

OPC is unique among antioxidants in that it actively scavenges oxygen and nitrogen radicals.

It also has an affinity to collagen, making it a great cardiovascular protector. I know of no single botanical ingredient to have such a positive impact on health.

The Good Baby returns

At nine years old, Pipiwai farm girl and Northland Rescue Helicopter ambassador Madison Macmillan released her third book in the Good Baby children’s series called the Good Baby and the Unicorn.

Madison published her first book in 2018 at seven years old called The Good Baby and The Bad Hippo, which she wrote on her way home from school one day.

She released The Good Baby and the Hairy Monster in 2019 and has, so far, donated $1,000 of book sales to the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service.

“When I was in year two, my teacher read a book about a Bad Baby and a Good Hippo, and it inspired me,” says Madison.

“I liked the way the author wrote and how my teacher expressed it. I came up with the Good Baby idea on the way home from school. The Bad Hippo story is about being honest and the Hairy Monster in the second book is my cat, Boris.

“My friend and I came up with the unicorn idea as we go on adventures together on my family farm. The Good Baby and the Unicorn is about the unicorn not having many friends because he looks different with a horn on his head.

“They become friends and rescue a tadpole in a storm and put it back into its home. The tadpole is also different. I hope the book helps people take care of others who may be different.

“I donate money from my book sales to the Northland Rescue Chopper so they can buy things they need to rescue people. Living on a farm, I know the

chopper can get to remote places easier and faster than ambulances, and they can drop a person down on a harness to help if need be.

“I come up with ideas from things around me. My next book is the Good Baby and the Naughty Grandma, and the fifth book will be the Good Baby and the Kauri Snail. Adam, my dad’s friend, does the artwork. He is a fireman, and having him help is really nice.

“I also like taking care of the sheep and chickens, playing hockey and doing gymnastics. I love living on the farm and helping my grandad move the cows, feed out the hay and going around the property on my go-kart to do my chores. I hope other young people will try writing as well, even if they don’t publish their books. I think as I grow older, I will write a chapter book but am not sure I will publish it.”

When building or renovating a home or office, one of the exciting jobs is perfecting your kitchen design.

Rural contracting is facing a major shortage of operators with a fall in supply of overseas expertise due to border closures. There are courses available in the industry for New Zealanders to upskill and find a new source of employment opportunities.

The sector provides a great variety of seasonal and permanent roles, from weed spraying and crop drilling to operating and servicing complex machinery such as combine harvesters or those that produce silage.

Entry-level work roles include driving tractors, mowers and sprayers, as well as machinery maintenance. There are opportunities to move up to operating larger more sophisticated machinery such as balers, combine harvesters and similar agricultural machinery.

Perhaps the best place to start would be a tractor driver with a wage or salary between $40,000 and $48,000 a year.

Training courses are open in which an operator will connect a variety of equipment and operate it safely on the road, across paddocks and on undulating terrain. Tractor driving requires some prior knowledge or basic training either at a starter course or on-site.

A complex machinery operator could earn up to $80,000, and this job requires good technical skills.

“Operating a combine harvester or foraging machine is like being at the controls of a spaceship,” says one instructor. These are highly technical machines with several computers, touch screens, and joysticks to control the

variety of operations the machine has to perform. Mechanical support is another opening, and machinery is key to rural contracting, and it needs to function properly. People who can perform regular maintenance and repairs are important, particularly as service centres are often some distance away.

An agri-chemical applicator requires come certification received after training.

Spraying crops to remove pests and encourage growth is an important job

in agriculture. Training in the safe use of agri-chemicals, protective equipment and the various types of applicators, from backpacks to large spraying rigs, is available through formal NZQA training and Growsafe accreditation.

A changing climate will bring both threats and opportunities for New Zealand farmers and contractors, according to the Ministry for Primary Industries, which underlines the value of GPS use and computer surveillance to enhance farm production in a changing world.

Small changes in average temperature can lead to significant changes in the frequency of extreme events, including heavy rainfall, drought or very high temperatures.

Climate–Smart Agriculture (CSA) is a term that has been developed for farming systems that respond to these issues.

It provides an opportunity to increase agricultural productivity and incomes while adapting and building resilience to climate change. It reduces greenhouse gas emissions, adds perceived and real value to export products while future-proofing efficient food and fibre production.

MPI says that given that climate variability is increasing, vulnerability to climate change will increase unless coupled with the adoption of new strategies for CSA intensification.

Increasing the intensity of farm production may create increased economic risks and exposure to additional impacts from more frequent extreme weather events.

Dependence on externally sourced feed supplies may bring exposure to climate change and market pressures outside

New Zealand farmers’ control. Shifts in land use especially from sheep and beef to dairy may reduce flexibility of access to alternative feed and relocation of stock to less drought or flood affected areas. There are a number of things that farmers can do now to prepare and make their business more resilient to future climate changes.

Strategies that provide some flexibility, so farmers can work across a range of future conditions and meet both challenges and capture opportunities are likely to become more important in the future.

Under CSA, there are some intensification strategies that provide a means for New Zealand pastoral farmers and their rural contractors to better adapt to climate change, capture further efficiencies and secure market access into high-value markets.

Promising pathways which could be used to drive climate-smart intensification are improved risk management strategies and more efficient production, using good management practices and efficient use of resources and technologies that improve both profitability and environmental outcomes.

Feeding a dairy herd in spring and summer means good maize silage as a high-quality forage supplement for filling genuine feed deficits, but the process needs to be well managed to reduce costs and wastage.

DairyNZ advises farmers that the silage is particularly low in sodium (Na), calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) and can be used as an effective carrier to supplement cows with magnesium (Mg).

New Zealand trials have found production responses to maize silage range between 32g MS/kg DM and 178g MS/kg DM. The highest response came from more days in milk created by feeding maize silage in a year affected by a dry summer.

An analysis of more than 600 New Zealand dairy farms found, on average, that supplements fed added only 50g MS/kgDM to annual milksolids/cow and 96g MS/kgDM to annual milksolids/ha.

With such variation in response possible, attention to detail is required to turn additional feed into additional profit.

Maize silage is full of soluble carbohydrates, which, while being a great food for cows, is also loved by spoilage bugs, such as yeasts and mould. The aim of the ensiling process is to get the air

out of the stack and keep it out until maize silage is ready to be fed. Consider stack location and prepare a site in advance of harvest. Consider environmental implications such as the risk of run-off, distance to waterways, drains and other sensitive areas.

Consider whether to use a stack or a bunker.

The former can be located around a property, and distribution is flexible while bunkers are initially more expensive but have higher compaction rate and, therefore, less wastage. The aim is to build a stack so that when being fed out, as little maize as possible is exposed to air.

At the association’s annual conference Waikato contractor Helen Slattery stepped up from vice-president to replace Southland’s David Kean, who’d given 12 years’ service to the board and spray contractor Clinton Carroll became vice-president at the annual conference in Rotorua.

Andrew Olsen joins as its first full-time CEO, with the retirement of the longserving Roger Parton. The executive team says rural contractors are facing intense challenges as well as identifying some new opportunities.

“We heard about some of the stresses our members are enduring, largely due to the ongoing shortage of skilled staff, particularly experienced machinery operators,” says Helen Slattery. “We all work hard in the season but these shortages are pushing some

contractors to breaking point.” Andrew Olsen says economist Tony Alexander told of increasing labour shortages and competition for talent.

“His advice was for rural contractors to focus on their businesses and really consider their capacity to service customers, review pricing and how to train and retain good workers. Many at the conference took this advice on board immediately and began planning changes they will initiate.“ It may include factoring in a string of messages that pricing of farm machinery and wrap film will rise next year by as much as 20 per cent in some cases.

Rural contractors also heard that farmers are increasingly less interested in applying their own chemicals, opening up new customer opportunities for spray operators. Helen Slattery says the key issue for rural contractors is the minimal allowance for 125 skilled machinery

operators to come in for the next season when a survey of rural contractors showed 400 or more were needed to keep up with farmer demand.

“We accept that as a quid pro quo, we have to continue lifting our efforts to train more Kiwis. A new round of training is underway including four, month-long courses, with one to two more weeks of work experience, starting at the Telford campus from July 12. Those trainees emerge with tractor-driving skills, but it takes our members a lot longer to get them to the point they can operate complex machinery.”

Andrew Olsen says he will be working with the government seeking more experienced machinery operators to be allowed in from overseas or face crops left in the ground, jobs and export dollars being lost as well as increasing health and safety risks and stresses for farmers, contractors and their staff.

We all know that bigger machinery can deliver economies of scale through sheer muscle. However, is it possible to also achieve gains in brains as well as brawn?

Chicory benefits animals and environment Fast-growing annual 501 Chicory ticks all the boxes for farmers, stock and the environment this season according to an experienced agronomist as spring sowing approaches.

Blair Cotching says 501 Chicory in particular combines high DM yield with quick establishment, superb quality and climatic resilience to keep animals well fed in summer and autumn.

What’s more, research has shown cows grazing chicory excrete significantly less N every time they urinate, reducing the N load in the urine patch compared to ryegrassclover pasture.

With urine patches major contributors of N loss from grazed systems, averaging 700 kg/ha N per urination in traditional pastoral farming, this is a key benefit for chicory, says Blair, who heads the pasture systems team at Barenbrug.

“We’ve heard a lot about plantain’s potential to mitigate N loss, but it is not the only forage herb available to help farmers improve their environmental performance.

“Science has shown us chicory can be equally as helpful, giving farmers another way to balance productivity and profitability with responsible stewardship of both land and freshwater.”

The first study to directly compare urinating patterns of dairy cows grazing chicory, plantain or ryegrass was carried

out at Lincoln University Research Dairy Farm in February and March 2018 by scientists from the university’s Faculty of Agriculture and Life Science 1.

Milk yield was similar across all three forages for the trial period. Cows grazing chicory substantially lower

urinary N concentrations, similar to those recorded for cows grazing plantain.

In short, Blair says, like plantain, chicory diluted the cows’ urine because it is high in both water and minerals, particularly sodium, potassium and calcium.

Results from this study align with earlier research showing cows grazing chicory produced more milk solids than those grazing ryegrass, reflecting chicory’s higher summer ME, which averaged 12.3 in this trial compared with irrigated ryegrass at 11.9.

Herbs to power up livestock The addition of herbs to a pasture mix is the weapon you need to enhance pasture quality and quantity when feed supplies tighten during dry periods.

Three decades of effluent innovation

The Joskin company has been in the business of turning effluent into brown gold for more than three decades, innovating new ways to meet regulations and use a waste product as valuable fertiliser.

“Previously considered a common waste, slurry has gradually acquired the status of brown gold among farmers,” says Joskin’s media liaison.

“It is a rich and abundant natural resource, with an incredible fertilising potential at a limited cost. Its spreading, however, requires the use of suitable equipment that can preserve the natural properties of slurry such as organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, lye and magnesium.”

Joskin, realising that not all farms are the same, branched out from the basic method of slurry dispersal many years ago, relegating simple scatter dispersal to history. It developed the concept of spreading booms to cover more ground more efficiently, delivering slurry closer to the soil and thus reducing outgassing, which used to see massive loss of nitrogen and the loss of ammonia, with severe consequences both in odours and benefit drop-offs.

Booms are excellent for utilising windows in the weather, which provide optimum dispersal conditions. More ground covered quickly is never a bad thing when the conditions are right. Whether equipped with skids to push down and part vegetation or multiple hoses and

nozzles close to the soil, tankers equipped with booms have understandably become a commonplace sight in rural areas.

The second wave of innovation came with the advent of injectors, which use discs to slice open the pasture surface and then inject slurry into the topsoil, preserving the plant matter and feeding

its roots with nutrients that have lost no ammonia and nitrogen content at all.

Joskin has kept pace with new technology and, at the same time, covered new and stricter regulations on slurry application.

The two go hand in hand, as the more efficient means of dispersal, also lead to

less odour and run-off. Joskin’s range of tankers also provides another advantage; portability. While some farms can rely on irrigators run from an effluent pond hub, others have far-flung paddocks and roads running through, meaning that getting the fertiliser to its destination requires tractor power.
