The judging panel, made up of a mixture of New Zealand’s favourite foodies, butchers and industry heavyweights, will sample and examine all competition entries over a two-day period. The top 12 sausages selected will then go on to the final taste test.

Sausages are initially judged prior to cooking with judges considering inner and outer visual appearances.

Once cooked, the appearance, aroma, texture, composition and taste are taken into consideration.

Past president of Food Writers New Zealand, Kathy Paterson, has judged the competition for the past four years.

She knows exactly what the hunt for the nation’s best tasting sausage is all about and what goes into an awardwinning sausage.

“This competition celebrates a Kiwi classic,” she said.

“There aren’t many New Zealanders out there that would go through the summer season without indulging in at

least one sizzling sausage, whether that be at the local hardware store, at the beach or on their dinner plate.

“As judges, we are looking for a good meat to fat ratio along with the appropriate mix of herbs or spices.”

The winning sausage will be announced at an awards event on Thursday, October 19 in time to celebrate National Sausage Day on Friday, October 20.

In addition, members of the public will be called upon to have their say in naming the winner of this year’s People’s Choice Award. This award will be decided during a public tasting held on Friday, October 13 at Smales Farm Business Park in Takapuna, Auckland.

Last year’s best tasting sausage was found at Mangawhai Meat Shop with the chicken, lime and lemongrass sausage beating 500 other entries.

New World Rolleston’s pork and Tasmanian apple cider won the People’s Choice Award.

Competition manager Blair Briscoe said the competition is open to “anyone and everyone” after being first held last year.

“We’ve been more proactive this year so the competition now has bigger and more prizes.” This year’s $10,000 prize pool includes a Honda two-wheeler motorbike, a waterblaster, $2,000 worth of Fonterra Farm Source vouchers and a Stihl chainsaw, with the competition

winner getting first choice. “There will also be first, second and third place cash prizes in-house for young farmers club members.”

Calves must be F12 Friesians and born between August 1-20.

“Everyone who enters receives a NRM calf meal bag,” said Blair.

Young farmers members will arrange transport to the weigh-in which is expected to be held on November

18. Calves will be collected a day or two beforehand and transported to a central location.

“We are selling the calves onto a bull buyer and 25 per cent of the profits will be donated to Rural Support Trusts in Taranaki and Manawatu.”

BY DENISE GUNN GROWING UP IN A FARMING FAMILY HAS GIVEN TIM BONNER PLENTY OF EXPOSURE TO THE DAIRY INDUSTRY.

T

im’s early years were spent on the family farm near Hurleyville.

His parents, Danny and Maureen, employed a farm manager to run the dairy operation as a farm accident had left Danny a paraplegic before Tim was born.

When Tim was eight years old his parents sold the farm and moved to their current property near New Plymouth.

The farm has a 50/50 sharemilker on it. Although Tim and his siblings had no part in the day-to-day operation of the farm, they did raise calves for pocket money.

“I didn’t actually start milking cows until I finished high school,” said Tim. Tim credits his father with instilling a love of cattle and knowledge of animal welfare into him and his brothers

from an early age. “With my father in a wheelchair and only really involved with managing the business side of the farm, it was difficult for him to teach me various on-farm tasks which made it a challenge when looking for my first job.

“Fortunately my uncle, Johnny Poole, was happy to show me the ropes and supply a good reference.”

Tim spent several weeks on Johnny’s farm in the Waikato, gaining skills and knowledge. This work experience set the ball rolling for Tim’s career in the dairy industry.

Tim’s three uncles, Steven, Robert and Johnny Poole are all successful farmers and well-established in the dairy industry, holding positions with LIC and Fonterra. “I feel very fortunate to be surrounded by family and friends who

are keen to support and teach me about the industry,” said Tim. “I owe them a lot.”

Tim’s first position was as a farm assistant at DairyNZ’s research farm, Scott Farm, near Hamilton. He then headed to Massey University.

“I did two years of an agri-commerce degree at Massey University before leaving to achieve some career goals to set me up for contract milking on the family farm for the 2017/18 season,” he said.

Throughout his time at university, Tim held various summer jobs around the country.

“This was very beneficial seeing how other farms operate and gaining really valuable skills,” he said.

“After leaving uni, I did about nine months as farm assistant on John and Wendy Allen’s 800-cow dairy farm in Manawatu.”

A move back to Taranaki at the beginning of the season to work on a farm operated by Steven and Maria Poole followed.

“I’m currently employed, as part of a team of four in the role of farm 2IC, by Delvin Kapuni Limited,” said Tim. The System Four operation milks 800 Friesian-cross cows in a split calving system on 210 hectares.

Between 20-30 per cent of the farm’s total feed is imported and up to 19 tonnes of dry matter per hectare is homegrown.

“The main focus is on ‘pasture first’ and ensuring they grow and utilise as much feed as possible on the farm,

then supplement is used to fill the gaps” said Tim. “Supplement is used to boost the profit on-farm, not solely drive production.”

This season will see Tim back on his parent’s farm, taking up a contract milking position. He is looking forward to the challenge of contract milking 200 cows.

“I have four other siblings — I am a triplet of three boys and I also have two older siblings who are twins — none of whom are interested in farming,” said Tim. “So I am also very lucky to have parents prepared to give me the opportunity to run the family farm.

“My production target is 75,000kgMS for the first season, 80,000kgMS the season after that and so on to achieve the farm’s potential.”

Winning the 2017 Taranaki Dairy Trainee of the Year was a big surprise to Tim. He entered the Manawatu awards the previous year and came third.

“I felt less confident this time round than I had the first time,” he said.

“So I really had no idea what to expect on awards night.

“The other entrants were really quality blokes from what I gathered.”

Tim said winning the awards was great confirmation that he is on the right track with his goals and knowledge.

“It’s given more me more confidence in my abilities for contract milking next season.”

Having secured his own 200-cow herd, Tim aims to be 50/50 sharemilking in five years’ time.

BY ANNA HARDING MARK GOODIN HAD HEARD OF HEMP BEING GROWN AS A CROP, BUT IT WASN’T UNTIL LAST SUMMER THAT HE DECIDED TO TRY IT OUT FOR HIMSELF.

H

e and his wife Sam are the owners and managing directors of Goodin Ag, an agricultural contracting company providing services for Taranaki farmers and crop growers.

Last year, Mark was approached by a group of people who were interested in industrial hemp seeking to plant and harvest their crop.

Through that group, he met people from an Australian hemp research and development company. “They talked to me about the industry, what’s possible, and how it’s growing around the world.

Then two months later in March 2016, myself and three others went to Australia and looked at the crops and processing

over there.” Mark was inspired and saw the possibilities of how hemp could work for farmers in Taranaki.

“Hemp is an excellent rotation crop. It rejuvenates the soil as the plant grows and drops 90% of its leaves onto the ground, putting back valuable nutrients and building up organic matter in the soil. “This will work well for our maize crops, as continued cropping over time has depleted the soil. It can consume four times the amount of carbon dioxide of trees and if grown right, it will not require herbicides or pesticides,” said Mark.

Government regulations state that ‘in order to grow, trade in, or process industrial hemp as an agricultural crop, an individual, body corporate, or partnership needs to be licenced under the Misuse of Drugs (Industrial Hemp) Regulations 2006’.

However, regulations have been easing up. An agreement reached between New Zealand and Australian food safety authorities in April this year, will see hemp seed legalised as food in New Zealand. However, before the standard can take effect, changes to regulations under the Food Act, Misuse of Drugs Act, and Medicines Act will need to be made, which could take up to 18 months.

After securing a hemp licence, Mark, along with a few friends, trialled five hectares of hemp last summer.

However, it proved to be the wettest and coldest summer in many years, so the crop suffered heavily. But Mark is still optimistic. “It was a really good year for trialling because we know now what not to do. We got the worst of the worse, so we can only get better.”

The project ended up with about 30 bales of hemp fibre. Mark has no way of processing it himself, so is relying on sending it to another farmer in the Waikato. However, he and his partners eventually plan on getting their own processor.

recommended. Hemp generally takes three to four months to grow and it is harvested just before going to seed, then cut and left to dry like hay.

It is then chopped up and the hurd (the soft bit inside the stem) and fibre are divided. Then it’s stored until processing. He aims to increase how much he grows every year, with a goal of 100 hectares in five years’ time.

“There’s over 25,000 uses for hemp and that’s anything from using the root, stem, leaves and seeds.

There’s so much you can do with it — it’s unbelieveable.”

Mark is growing hemp mainly for fibre use. “Hemp fibre is the strongest fibre in the world, which is ideal for building materials like fiberboard, insulation wool and carpet.

Mark said that compared to pine trees that take 25 years to grow for example,

it only takes about four hectares of hemp, which grows in four months, to build a house.

Hempcrete, a mixture of hemp hurd and lime, is being used to build houses in New Zealand today. The concrete-like mixture is moulded around the wooden frame of a house. It’s also insulative, anti-bacterial, waterproof and fireproof, “an ideal building material”.

Mark says that other hemp products being researched in New Zealand include biodegradable plastic, bio fuel, 3D printing ink and Nanotechnology.

“There’s so many industries we can get into, it’s just a matter of getting our foot in the door and getting it going,” said Mark.

“I see huge potential in this industry for farmers to improve soil and animal health and make an alterative income from their land.”

BY ANN MORGAN Mini Ha Ha Horse Haven is a rescue and rehabilitation centre run by Jennifer and Lindsay Heperi for mini horses from across New Zealand, specialising in rehabilitating laminitis and grass-affected miniature horses.

“W

e care for minis, Shetlands and small ponies. We have two donkeys at present amongst our family of 21 fur kids,” says Jen. “We came about creating The Haven after being asked to help some wee minis that needed care. The owners didn’t realise that they are different to big horses and we learnt about laminitis when we took in a rescue mare with

a one-day-old foal and it was a big learning curve.

more improvement each day. Chronically affected horses take up to five weeks to become comfortable. At two weeks a horse may lightly trot and by week four they can canter again.

“We build up their trust and they have the run of seven acres and come and go as they please.

“Rescuing and retraining is easy.

Rehoming is difficult. We are extremely protective and ensure those we do let foster know exactly how to care for them.

“We recently became a charitable trust after five years of funding ourselves with help from many kind folk sponsoring us. Now we can apply for other sponsorship and grants.”

The cost to care for one horse is more than $2,500 per year, or $20-25 a week to keep a mini in the lifestyle they deserve.

“We have people nationwide rescuing horses from vulnerable situations. We are known in United States, United Kingdom and Australia with others wanting help. I work full time and we couldn’t achieve what we do without our amazing supporters.

“Our volunteer photographer Tracey Agnew comes and puts every animal’s photograph on our facebook page every Sunday night so people can see how their horse is doing.

“Mini horses should always be in pairs, not company for a big horse.

Some horses arrive and can hardly walk. Laminitis is like walking on crushed glass.

“Laminitis has become a big problem across the country especially with fast growing rye and clover grass. These are high in potassium and sugars and so are muesli and commercial feeds.

Many owners don’t add salt and this can contribute to a laminitis attack when lush green grass is added into the mix. This can make a horse become grass affected.”

Jen says minis are often labelled little brats and are known for behavior problems due to being treated like large dogs. “This gives a completely wrong impression of how awesome they are. If you don’t understand about potassium and sugars in the grasses, and metabolic syndrome, you are quietly killing them.”

Horses get Equine Metabolic Syndrome if they are fed mostly grass.

Warning signs include a big thick hard cresty neck and fat lump pads on their body.

“Signs of a grass affected horse include twitching and not standing nicely when you put the bridle and gear on.”

The couple built three ‘paradise tracks’, special yards with untreated post peelings so the animals walk on a soft surface, carpeted shelter huts, and they have macrocarpas to get shade.

“We have rehabilitated more than 30 laminitics in three years. They get their feet soaked in epsom salts and are given magnetic pulse blanket treatments. The nutritional programme involves adding salt, Grazezy, S.O.S and Premium Minerals, and hay is soaked and has no clover or rye in it.

“They start on the painkiller Bute, and then are weaned onto a natural pain remedy made specially by Jill Shires and it takes two to four days to see a slight improvement followed by

uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots far more effectively and returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car.

Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

This is pure logic, if a machine is out of alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline.

The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.

The results of the regional competition were revealed at a gala dinner on Friday, August 4, in New Plymouth.

As well as Supreme House of the Year, Custom Construction won other regional awards for their Opunake home — a gold and category award for the Carters new home $1-2 million award, and two lifestyle section awards for craftsmanship and outdoor living.

The judges said from the moment they walked through the house, it was obvious it was built with passion.

He said that the roof was a big part of what made the design unique. The overhang gives the house a distinctive profile and roof line. Hidden solar panels were cleverly concealed and corrugated iron was used for a rural Taranaki feel. He also said the natural setting was taken into account in the design process. “The house is at one with the

environment, with how it sits, as well as being protected from it.”

Custom Construction owner Nathan Mumby said: “We are all buzzing.

Everyone put so much passion into this build, it’s really nice to be recognised for everybody involved. From guys on tools to our sub traders, and the designer Tony — all were just really humbled by it.”

The competition is divided into two parts, with the first being regional level and the second at a national level.

There were six gold award winners from the Taranaki region. They will now be judged against gold winners from around the country to find the National Gold Reserve finalists.

National category winners and the Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for House of the Year and Renovation of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner in November in Auckland.

Septic camouflage is key

Country living invariably means a septic tank for waste disposal and while the connotation maybe less than salubrious, there’s no reason for it. Landscaping near and around septic systems is the best camouflage, as well as an enhancement.

Earthworks are designed to maximise the absorption capacity of existing soil, and location, size, shape, construction procedures and maintenance all affect how well the completed septic system will function.

Plants play a huge role and as a result careful selection will ‘beautify’ a mundane function while adding to its efficiency.

Plants enhance the system by removing moisture and nutrients from the soil and providing cover to prevent erosion.

Careful planning helps to provide a landscape with lower maintenance costs, greater environmental benefits, and much higher aesthetic value.

Like any business venture, care is needing in setting up, and in this day and age there is a huge emphasis on health and safety.

Last year the New Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA) came into effect which repealed the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.

Good health and safety practice is not something you can just buy off the shelf and farmers need to build health and safety into everyday activity on-farm. The same applies when they venture out into other endeavors.

farmers will want to get consultants in to give them expert advice, there is no single product or document that is a silver bullet for farm safety.

Farmers should only employ competent and qualified professional health and safety advisors. “When selecting a new contractor or buying stock, farmers do their homework,” says Mr McCone.

“They shop around, look online, ask other farmers and make a decision based on sound information. The same should apply to buying health and safety advice and resources. For a would-be farming contractor, the Ministry of

Technology cares for the land

Technology in the 21st century would no doubt baffle the farmers who broke in the Taranaki farms of last century but today it has become an essential tool for the agriculture industry.

The Global Positioning System and its spin-offs have advanced out of sight combining real-time data collection with accurate position information that is available on a smartphone .

GPS is being used to achieve precision farming enabling the land-owner and the rural contractor to develop the most effective soil/plant treatment strategies enabling higher farm production while GPS mapping allows aerial top dressers and bulk spreaders to carry out the precise application of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilisers.

That’s vital for the bottom line as better control and spread of costly fertiliser, accurate spraying and vegetation control is possible, reducing overall expenses, producing a higher yield, and even more importantly creating a more environmentally friendly farm with strict application controls possible.

Precision agriculture is about collecting timely geospatial information on soil-plant-animal requirements and prescribing and applying sitespecific treatments to increase agricultural production.

But it is not only ground or aerial spreading that has taken a huge leap forward. All other aspects of farming have benefited, with field-placed sensors in stock paddocks, croplands and orchards sending real time data to phones, i-pads and computers. Farmers are seeing benefits from micromanaging their fields.

The benefits of precision agriculture are not only limited to the large farms with huge capital investments and experience with information technologies. There are inexpensive and easy-to-use methods and techniques.

Information needed for improving land and water use can be collected.

Farmers can improve the use of fertilisers and other soil amendments, determining the economic threshold for treating pest and weed infestations, and protecting natural resources for future use.

Farm equipment manufacturers are also adopting sophisticated GPS devices to help farmers and agribusinesses become more productive and efficient.

‘The coast is my beat’ After just eight months in the business McDonald Real Estate consultant Blair Burnett is enjoying his relatively new vocation after many years as a policeman.

Policing can be a tough ask and he feels that some colleagues stay in the police force a bit too long. “I’ve seen policemen burnt out and unwell,” he

admits. His own thoughts of possibly moving on were stimulated by an approach from a McDonald Real Estate director, and a comment by a police psychologist who said: “If you are going to leave you’ve got to leave well. That hit the nail on the head.”

He considers his police background, dealing with all sorts of people and situations, can only be of help in his new job, including dealing with people under stress. He says his strengths include honesty, integrity, empathy, trustworthiness, sensitivity and hard work. “It’s really all about communication,” he explains.

Blair is enthusiastic about working for McDonald Real Estate. “They are familybased and have been in Taranaki for over 100 years.” He feels their values mirror his own, such as family values, principles and going the extra mile.

Managing urinary nitrogen on your farm How much can we learn from a handful of grass? The answer is both remarkably simple and incredibly complex — but thankfully, modern scientific techniques can assess the biology and chemistry of just such a sample to provide some clear-cut advice for adjusting farming practices.

It’s all thanks to a Kiwi company who are leading the world.

Raymond Burr from QLabs is a farmer first and a man of science in equal measure. From his early days share farming sheep and beef to converting a large spread to dairy in the King Country in ‘89, he knows the challenges farmers face in a constant race to improve their profitability. Raymond studied at Massey University, and his investigations into soil and pasture health with QLabs today would have amazed his professors back then. Then again, the foundation of what QLabs offer the farming sector is based on sound common sense. QLabs have been granted a patent on their latest form of herbage analysis, which can very accurately look at the nutritional content of even a small representative 500gram sample of grass and drill down into its composition.

One major advantage is detecting levels of nitrogen, which cannot be stored by ruminant animals like cattle. This means a very accurate forecast of urinary nitrogen content can be built up — a valuable tool for evaluating efficient farm management.

Qlabs patented method means that with a single test of a sample of pasture a farmer can fine tune and plan ahead for a number of factors. Environmental responsibility is one, but maximising the nutrition of every square foot of pasture is another — and that means better yields whether for dairy and drystock.

Potential health issues can be nipped in the bud long before they become a vet’s problem. “The science may be high tech, but the principle is simple,” says Raymond. “Arm yourself with knowledge and get the optimum out of your farm.”

In the 1980s the rising plate meter was invented by a farmer, and accurate pasture budgeting soon followed. From the early 1990s we became proficient at growing more protein by applying more Nitrogen.

It is time to move on with the latest patented method invented by an ex-farmer.

Therapy for osteoarthritis Last edition we discussed how high levels of chondroitin sulphate (CS) help joints affected by osteoarthritis (OA). An excellent 2010 study ‘Chondroitin sulphate in the treatment of osteoarthritis’ (Y. Herotin, PhD) identified the actions of CS on arthritic joints.

They identified over 30 positive changes in arthritic joints with high doses of chondroitin sulphate. It is worth noting that the dosages in the study were much higher than in many joint products. Most products have around 250mg of CS whereas the study used 800mg or more. I generally commence therapy even higher with 1500mg of high grade chondroitin.

The anti-inflammatory effects of high doses of CS appear to inhibit inflammatory chemicals including prostaglandins and COX-2 enzymes.

These are the targets of antiinflammatory drugs which is why they can be effective at reducing pain.

Secondly high levels of CS appear to slow the rate of cartilage loss. One suggested mechanism is that CS appears to protect the chondrocyte cells responsible for maintaining cartilage. Research showed that CS can actually prevent the death of chondrocytes which is the real driver behind cartilage loss.

Failure to consider the big picture I see some limitations in our farming research where so called advances in one area are creating problems in another area.

Most vets have vast knowledge of animal disease, diagnosis and treatment but have not been trained in soil science. This is not a criticism but an observation.

Recently I spent time in Denmark with a senior vet and nutritionist focussed on finding the reason for animal diseases, particularly in Europe. This is part of a treatment plan for farmers who can lose cows very quickly from clostridia and similar diseases like botulism. Dr Erri’s research has led him to the soil for answers. Unbalanced soil nutrients lead to unbalanced feed which is leading to the inability of cows to naturally fight diseases without the aid of vaccines and medicines to keep them healthy.

A so-called advance in nutrition, a trend beginning in New Zealand, is the use of increasing rumen bypass feeds to produce milk. In Europe this trend is well developed and although this practice produces milk, Dr Erri commented that it is at the expense of animal health. Cows are barely completing two lactations under this system. He said that nutritionists are treating a cow like a machine and by bypassing the rumen are not respecting the full nutrition that the bugs in the rumen need to complete their job to maintain a healthy cow and her immune system.

residuals which upon entering the pond wipe out the beneficial biology. The next step is the sterilisation of our effluent and eventually sterilisation of our soil.

Furthermore a soil with compromised beneficial bacteria will create an abundance of pathogenic bacteria which will eventually get to the feed which has grown in that soil. If only cows could talk, I’m sure they would have something to say about it. Amazing what you see when you look at the big picture.

Funds for sustainable farming Applications to the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Sustainable Farming Fund have opened, with $7 million available for applied research projects led by the primary sector that help boost rural communities, our economy, and the sustainability of our environment.

“SFF aims to bring together farmers, growers and foresters to work alongside scientists and researchers to solve a problem or seize an opportunity,” says Justine Gilliland, MPI’s director of investment programmes.

“The fund is based on the philosophy that those closest to the problem, or opportunity, are best placed to understand how it can be dealt with and how to get buy-in from their industry and community.

The fund has been operating since 2000 and projects have come from across the country and all parts of the primary sector.

“Recently we marked the 1,000th SFF project with the 1,000 Projects and Counting booklet, which is available on our website.

Projects funded include restoring local environments, fighting pests, researching and promoting best practice, applying new technologies, developing new food opportunities, and facilitating education and training programmes.”

Applicants can apply for up to $200,000 a year for a maximum of three years. The maximum total grant available from MPI is $600,000. Projects require a non-government funding contribution of at least 20 per cent.

leverage a high proportion of other funding or in-kind support to complement the SFF grant.

“Each year we receive a very high calibre of project applications. This year we are encouraging applications that showcase new and innovative approaches to addressing problems and opportunities in the primary industries” says Ms Gilliland. “We welcome any groups keen to tackle a shared problem

or develop a new opportunity related to the primary industries to apply for the fund.

Anyone interested in applying should contact an MPI investment adviser to discuss their ideas as soon as possible.”

Applications close on September 14, 2017 for projects beginning July 1, 2018. Feedback will be given on ideas and draft applications until August 31, 2017.

Kiwi shearer smashes world record

Hawke’s Bay shearer Rowland Smith has emulated older brother Matthew by smashing a world shearing record in England.

The 30-year-old father of two shore 644 romney and crossbred ewes in eight hours at Trefranck Farm in Cornwall, beating the previous record of 605 set

by Invercargill shearer Leon Samuels in Southland this year.

It was the latest in a string of world shearing records in the family, including the ultimate record of 731 ewes in nine hours by Matthew Smith at Tefranck last year.

Rowland grew up around Ruawai in Northland and now farms a small block at Maraekakaho near Hastings. In January 2011 he shore 562 in a twostand eight-hour record of 1066 with his second brother Doug at Waitara Station, between Napier and Taupo.

A year earlier Matthew had set a solo eight-hour record of 578 on the same property.

Rowland’s wife, Ingrid had also been in on the action in a King Country woolshed in January 2009 when she set a women’s solo-eight-hour lambs’ record of 470 while also claiming a two-stand record of 903 with her mother Marg Baynes, of Wairoa.

The record-breaking family members were all present as the latest milestone unfolded. At two-metres-tall, Rowland

was comfortably ahead of the target as he shore four consecutive two-hour runs of 161 each.

While Rowland averaged 44.72 seconds a sheep caught, shorn and despatched, and with cutter changes every 15 minutes, the shearing time on the sheep, each carrying over 3kg of wool, were regularly cut under 35 seconds. In his record five months Leon Samuels shore successive twohour runs of 149, 153, 151 and 152, averaging 47.6 seconds a sheep.

Up and coming Te Kuiti shearer Jack Fagan, who along with his father and shearing legend Sir David Fagan was at the record bid, predicted beforehand Rowland was capable of shearing 640 on the smooth-combing sheep. The record was shorn under the close control of judges Eddie Archer, of South Africa, John Fraser, of New Zealand, and Welsh officials Arwyn Jones and Martyn David, while a large team of helpers included wool handlers Leanna Wharerau, of Hastings, and Gwennan Paewai, of Wales.

Since the turn of the millennium, Hyundai have been scoring accolades and awards for their big seven-seat family adventure wagon, the Santa Fe SUV. Offering the same go-anywhere abilities and practical roominess of machines far beyond its very reasonable price bracket, its most recent generation is the very definition of a hard act to follow. So how did the new Santa Fe build on the success of its predecessor?

With smart use of space, and a factor not found in many large seven seaters — that’s how.

When it comes to the interior of a machine made to pack in the whole family, the devil is in the details. Or rather in this case, a host of little blessings.

From the ‘floating’ centre console which allows the front passenger to plug into the stereo and charger without getting in the driver’s way, through to a plethora of handy cubbies and cup holders — primed for today’s skinny energy drink cans as well as American-sized drivethru ‘tubs’ — there’s clearly been plenty of input into the Santa Fe’s interior from someone who has a rowdy bunch of kids. This is also clear when you take a look at the seating and storage arrangements in back. Doctor Who’s TARDIS may look far bigger on the inside than on the outside, but the Santa Fe is catching up.

The tailgate (which can be closed with a button, and stops closing should there be something in the way) opens to reveal enough space to stow a small castle siege’s worth of supplies. Return of the originator

The 1970s was a dire time for the auto industry — while the United States plunged from muscle-car excess into oil crisis panic, the great automakers of the continent struggled with budget cuts and technical issues. Even the sports cars and supercars of the late 70s failed to measure up to the style and sophistication of older models. But change was coming.

In 1976, Volkswagen — largely famous for their long-lasting Beetle at this point — took their small Golf hatchback and equipped it with a fuel injected 1.6-litre engine.

The result was a small car that blew the doors off several of its more ‘sporting’ competitors, founding a dynasty of nimble, smile-inducing Golf GTI models down the years. And, of course, a host of imitators.

By the mid-1980s nearly every major automaker had a hot hatch in the running, but the benchmark always wore a VW badge.

Safety and practicality intruded into the world of the GTI slowly, making later editions bulkier and slower for a time. But all that is over, and the latest Golf GTI is a back-to-the-roots driving machine.

Let’s begin with a top speed pushing 249km/h, with a feisty 229 horsepower under the hood.

Add in decades of development in crafting a responsive chassis and suspension setup, as well as what is perhaps one of the two best front-wheeldrive designs ever to hit the tarmac (Honda build the other one), and you’ve got a recipe for excitement.

Tempered, of course, with a suite of electronic safety measures which ensure thrills without spills.

Then again, for some the bold styling and unabashed firepower of the Golf GTI may not be enough.

If you’re the type who drizzles Tabasco sauce on raw chilli peppers in search of more kick, the even more powerful Golf R is a halo option, with more than 300 horses under the bonnet and boasting the title of ‘fastest Golf ever’.

Either car is sure to serve up plenty of fun, cleaving to the original formula — a car which is mild mannered on city streets, light on fuel, easy to park —

and which can blow traditional sports cars into the weeds on twisty, engaging roads. And while station wagon and electric-powered versions of this iconic

hatchback also exist, it’s the GTI badge that continues to push the limits of small-car performance, even after forty years.
