Feilding has won the 2013 New Zealand Farmers’ Market of the Year award

The award recognises community support and involvement in local farmers’ markets with customers around New Zealand voting for both their favourite market and a preferred stallholder. Feilding won the award against much larger markets in other regions.

The Feilding Farmers’ Market was established by Feilding Promotion’s Community Development team and is held every Friday in Manchester Square from 9am–2pm.

Following last year’s win, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, included a visit to Feilding’s Farmers’ Market in November as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year.

One application per financial year, which runs from July 1 to June 30, can be made to the trust with grants between $300 and $5,000 available.

All funding applications are considered individually and the trustees retain the right to grant funds in greater or lesser amounts.

West Melton’s Noel Kennard broke the mould of horse racing syndication in 2012 when he launched his In It For Fun syndicate with 420 punters taking a piece in the syndicate and its horse Franco Harrison.

The new Double the Fun syndicate will feature two horses and there are 1000 syndicate shares on offer and each individual syndicate share can have up to five members.

“Up until the In It For Fun syndicate horse racing syndicates were usually four or five people getting together to buy a horse and share in the training

costs and possibly any stake money the horse would win,” Kennard says.

“The reality is very few people make money out of that type of syndicate and with Harness Racing New Zealand looking to encourage people to get involved in the industry, whether as owners or punters, syndication needed to change.”

Kennard’s concept is simple, you buy a share in a syndicate for a one-off cost for a two-year duration. There are no ongoing costs involved and at the end of the two-year period the horse is sold and syndicate members share in the proceeds as well as any stake money the horse has earned.

“This is not a get rich quick scheme this is about having fun and being

involved in the thrill of racing,” he says.

Kennard is an Authorised Syndicator and has been vetted by both Harness Racing New Zealand and the Commerce Commission under whose rules and regulations he has to operate.

In the 1980s he got involved in the breeding industry and after spending some time in the North Island returned to the South Island and set up a stallion station on a 20-acre property at Weedons.

During this time he forged a relationship with one of Canterbury’s major studs, Wai-Eyre Farm near Ohoka, and began to focus on using New Zealand bred stallions to stand rather than importing stallions from the United States, and has been closely associated

Over the years Kennard became less involved in the actual stud work and began to increase his involvement in the marketing and promotional side of the breeding industry.

That was when he hit on the idea of creating a syndicate with a large number of participants paying a one-off fee over a two-year period.

This led to the birth of the In It For The Fun syndicate. Initially 500 hundred shares were put up and two weeks later when the offer closed 420 people had signed up for the syndicate and its horse Franco Harrison.

Franco Harrison has won two races and placed in several others in the year the syndicate has been running.

“Syndicate members have emailed me and said they have already got their

money’s worth. At race meetings they all wear In It For Fun/Franco Harrison tags and through that are meeting new friends who are also part of the syndicate.

“I recently had an email from a Christchurch woman who says she was on a stopover in Dubai and got talking to another New Zealander and found that this person was also a member of the Franco Harrison syndicate. What are the chances?

“That is what this type of syndication is all about, having fun and meeting people.”

The new Double the Fun syndicate has already secured one horse, now with southland trainer Hamish Hunter, and the second horse, once it has been purchased, will be going to Weedons trainer Nigel McGrath.

FARMING THROUGH EXTREME WEATHER EVENTS

In the ten years since purchasing their Utuwai farm in the northern Pohangina Valley, Tony and Lynda Gray have experienced floods, snowfalls, droughts and a windstorm.

When the owner of the lease block sold the property, Tony and Lynda decided to offer their farm for sale as well.

Tony said they’ve experienced every extreme in the nine years they’ve lived on the farm and don’t yet know what an average season is.

“Since we have been at Utuwai, there have been five dry/drought summers, and we thought that we had purchased a farm in a summer safe area.”

Originally from the Rangitikei, Tony was fourth generation of a Marton family farming on a 100ha finishing and cropping operation. A further 125ha neighbouring property was leased to create a more economic unit.

Located near the Ruahine Ranges, the farm sits on predominantly Whetukura silt loam soil and receives an average rainfall of 1,200mm.

Farm improvements and maintenance have been ongoing.

Initially the farm received fertiliser every year. More recently this has been reduced to a bi-annual application.

Twenty hectares of stony flats were stone-picked to enable direct drilling.

And a ford stream crossing was also created to allow vehicle access and ground spreading of fertiliser.

Tony said all farm tracks and dams are regularly maintained and upgraded.

Getting enough Co Enzyme Q10?

Co enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is essential for energy and a deficiency will can make us abnormally tired with weak muscles. As an antioxidant it also prevents dangerous oxidation of cholesterol trapped in artery walls which is the first cause of the plaques that restrict coronary blood flow.

I include it as nutritional support for most circulatory problems and many neurological and autoimmune diseases including Parkinson’s, MS, CFS, FM and PMR that all cause low energy. I regard it as essential when taking cholesterol medications to protect against muscle problems, fatigue and memory loss.

Succession Planning

Succession planning is critical to growing and sustaining the family farm. But where to start?

Accept Change: Succession planning will always involve change. Change can be challenging and difficult but not accepting it can be prejudicial to the whole family.

Start Now: Give some thought to what your intentions and goals are and ask how these can be achieved as soon as possible. The best succession plans will be developed over a long period of time through the whole family openly discussing matters.

Identify Needs: Identify the parent’s expectations for retirement and the children’s expectations for succession early on. What assets and income do the parents need for retirement? What assets and income do children need to buy into the farm?

Structure farmland and business ownership: Consider diversifying farm land and business ownership, such as having a company, trust or limited partnership own the farm land and another entity owning the farm business so that these interests can be easily transferred to the new generation.

Hand over the reins: Parents need to recognise when to hand over management of the farm to children. Hanging on for too long can limit growth and impair equity.

Bring in the help: Parents and children should talk to independent lawyers, farm consultants, accountants and bankers.

These professionals should talk to each other to make sure the plan will work.

Put a timeline in place: Pick an appropriate date to work towards — don’t let the plan stall!

Consider Debt: Can the farm sustain another family coming in and still build equity?

Comprehensive consideration should be given to all bank debt, guarantees and finance in relation to the farm land and business. Is the plan financially sustainable?

Consider non-farming children: How will the interests of non-farming children be catered for? Is this consistent with their legal entitlements?

Other matters: Consider protecting the family farm from erosion of capital from relationship breakdowns by having children enter into relationship property agreements.

Consider wills and memoranda of wishes, enduring powers of attorney, and checking that there is appropriate insurance cover with an independent insurance consultant. Parents should also consider the possibility of creating offfarm income sources.

Write it down: A documented and binding succession plan will provide certainty and peace of mind for all involved, and if required can provide flexibility.

Consider the alternatives: Sometimes the best solution for all concerned will be to sell the farm i.e. the best succession is no succession at all.

The saga is still unfolding at the time of writing, but the fallout has already registered in a drop in dairy product prices on the world platform.

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

Before any batch of paint was even sent to the canning plant, it was sampled in the on site laboratory, obviously for quality, and a clearance was issued. It was not rocket science!

The fallout from of the Fonterra debacle can be measured in the world’s media and it’s headlines.

A major news agency carries reports that ‘New Zealand’s environmental credentials are not as impeccable as many would think.

‘The majority of its rivers are too polluted to swim in. Its record on preservation of natural environments is

The super low application depth allows for application to soil over periods of the year when soils are near or at field capacity.

As the super low application depth allows us to apply farm dairy effluent virtually all year round the storage requirement is minimal. The system utilises two 33,000 litre water tanks for total storage.

The removal of open ponds reduces the rainwater footprint and reduces the overall farm dairy effluent having to be applied to land. The patented distribution system is fully automated and only requires about three hours work per month to maintain this problem-free effluent system.

What about building consents?

Building consents confirm that plans and specifications for proposed building work meet the requirements of the New Zealand Building Code, and ensure that any building work is safe, durable and does not endanger the health of property owners and users. It can only be issued in advance of any work taking place.

You may also need a resource consent if your project has an impact on the environment. You can access details information from the websites of your local council.

New rules came into effect in 2012 which apply to projects containing restricted building work critical to the integrity of a building by ensuring that it is structurally sound and weather-tight.

Most building projects require a building consent before any work is started. The consent includes not only the building work but also any work related to site preparation, plumbing or drainage.

Nutrition — the life enhancer

We eat food for its nutrient value to keep ourselves alive and energised, but what happens when the food we eat has no nutritional value?

We get no value from that food, worse than that, the cells in our bodies that look after us do not recognise food that has no value, they don’t know what to do with it, so they just store it in the body. Today, especially in the USA due to the lack of minerals in food, people weighing 200 kilos and more are dying from malnutrition while surrounded by food that has no nutritional value, but is engineered to be addictive.

According to Dr Melchoir Dikkers, professor of Biochemistry at Loyola University (Los Angeles) malnutrition is the most important problem confronting mankind at the present time. The United States, despite its boasted food production, is grossly undernourished and although per capita the expenditure on healthcare in the USA is the highest in the world, so is the incidence of cancer, obesity, heart and circulatory diseases.

Amazingly, Dr Joseph Weissman, associate professor of the UCLA College of Medicine, a specialist in preventative medicine and immunology, has discovered that nearly all the non-infectious diseases that presently plagues mankind, are of origin, developed during the 20th century. Billions of dollars spent on research, newer diagnostic

techniques, organ transplants, coronary by-pass procedures, chemotherapy, radiation and all various drugs, have not altered the advance of these killer diseases, but instead have merely enriched the chemists and medical practioners.

These diseases reflect malnutrition. Malnutrition begins in the soil. Today’s soils are tired, depleted, sick, poisoned by synthetic chemicals and void of minerals. Minerals in the soil control the metabolism of cells in plants, animal and man.

Diseases are created chiefly by destroying the harmony reigning among mineral substances present in infinitesimal amounts in air, water, food, but most importantly in soil.

Why all growing systems are essentially ‘biological’ Over recent times there has been much debate around the topic of ‘biological farming’.

As little if any nutrient enters a plant without first going through a biological process, all growing systems regardless of the label applied to them are essentially biological systems.

The most important issue presently, and is the one at the heart of the debate around different growing systems, is the use of fertiliser nitrogen.

Excess fertiliser nitrogen reduces the humus content of soil and when used regularly to promote growth, total pasture production steadily declines.

Recent work from AgResearch shows an 18% decline in pasture growth in the

second season after establishment of new pasture.

What we often observe is that where there is a dependence on nitrogen fertiliser, by the end of the fifth year the gaps between grass plants have steadily increased, a significant number of plants have been lost due to pulling in autumn, excess rain ponds for longer periods and total growth reaches a level where regrassing becomes the only option.

What is now well understood is that at least half of applied fertiliser nitrogen does not enter the targeted plant. Some is lost direct to the

atmosphere with the remainder finding its way into groundwater, and Ministry of the Environment figures show a steady increase in Nitrate-N levels in areas where intensive dairy farming is carried out.

Fertiliser nitrogen can be a useful tool; it’s the dependence on it that needs to be sorted. We only have to look to growing systems in Europe to know that its future use will be increasingly regulated. Farmers have the choice to modify their systems now, or wait until regulation arrives and other people start making decisions for them.

To know whether a property has a dependence on fertiliser nitrogen simply stop applying it, all of it.

If the result is less growth then there’s a dependency issue, it’s a simple test for any addiction, and the addiction to fertiliser nitrogen is evidenced by urea silos on farms. But it doesn’t have to be.

The use of DoloZest and CalciZest, soil improvers sold under the Functional Fertiliser brand are being increasingly used to successfully replace fertiliser nitrogen.

The measures collected over a number of years from the Berryman property, an intensive dairy operation near Edgecumbe, using a DoloZest/ CalciZest based total nutrient programme, show total pasture growth based on Overseer to have been in

excess of 19 tonne for each of the 2010–11 and 2011–12 seasons.

Pasture cages showed growth for the same seasons to be 18.4 and 18.3 tonne respectively, with less than 20kgN/ha applied each year. Total milk solid production was in excess of 1,300kg/ha from an average of 200 cows, with around 20% of the total feed being bought in.

Long strong stemmed clovers flourish throughout the major growing season providing exceptional growth of calves and contribute significantly to the 0.87:1 protein to fat ratio of the milk produced.

Clover flea and weevil under close examination can still be found however given the health of the clover damage is minimal.

Careful digging and sifting also turns up the occasional grass grub and beetle larvae but again too few to cause damage. Total nitrogen tests showed 9,400kgN/ha in the top 30cm of the soil with 200kg N/ha available for plant use at the time of testing.

With increased carbon sequestered each year and more humus formed, a steady increase in pasture growth and total farm production can be expected, and with measuring continuing more data will be made available.

Last week a group of 21 New Zealand delegates attended a three day Neal Kinsey Advanced 1 Soil Fertility Workshop at Sale, Victoria; followed by a day in the field with Albrecht-Kinsey soil fertility and nutrition advisor Peter Norwood on properties where he consults. They are making similar increases in production that we see here in NZ. On average, you can expect a 35% improvement over 3-5 years. There is sound science behind our programme, the course is very intense and teaches the delegates how much of each nutrient is required to maintain healthy soils; the mathematics required and the specific interactions of nutrients relating to nutrient deficiencies and excesses.

In the last couple of years there has been a lot of focus on the levels of pollution, especially nitrogen from dairy cows, which has resulted in new legislation limiting the levels of nitrogenous material entering water courses.

When nitrogen levels become high in ground water, it enters streams and rivers, leading to toxic algae growth and reducing the quality of the water substantially.

Nitrogen is principally excreted via the urine from cows, and levels are dictated by the amounts that are fed and the form they are fed in. Commonly in New Zealand, dairy cows are predominantly

However, the number of farmers feeding a total mixed ration, ie a complete and balanced diet where grass nutritional quality has also been taken into account, are relatively few compared to other regions such as Europe.

Like all other animals, cows need correct, balanced levels of nutrients within their diet to ensure optimum body maintenance, growth (in heifers), health, reproduction and lactation.

As part of that, protein — the nitrogen source from feed — is very important as it is responsible for maintaining body condition, calf growth in utero, muscle, organs, hooves, hair and connective tissue, immune function and milk protein during lactation.

Interestingly, up to 60% of consumed protein in cows can be lost in urine if it is not fed as part of a completely balanced diet and if the animal, due to poor early nutrition as a calf, has reduced rumen efficiency.

Protein is regarded as an expensive part of the diet, whether from feeds or

from pasture. Pasture nitrogen/protein levels are dictated by fertiliser and labour costs associated with good grassland management.

In New Zealand, dairy paddocks contain mostly rye-clover pastures, which are relatively high in sugar and protein and low in fibre. However all cattle are evolutionarily adapted to consume large amounts of fibre, and rumen micro-organisms are primarily present to convert fibre into energy-rich volatile fatty acids (VFAs), which provide around 70% of the cow’s energy, and dictate the way protein is digested and utilised. Low levels of fibre intake can interfere with this system.

The rumen microbes need a stable, near neutral pH to do this efficiently.

The synergistic relationship between the cow and its rumen microbes activity allows energy to be derived from fibrerich feedstuffs, as mammals lacks the enzymes to break down fibre otherwise.

Rye grass tends to be high in sugars and have low fibre levels, and, as a result, are quickly broken down in the rumen and cause low pH conditions from the acids produced by the sugar-activated bacteria.

Even with high levels of observation, skill and knowledge, many heats are missed or AB straws wasted on cows wrongly identified as ready.

Over the last 25 years they have modified and developed their design to produce a high quality, functional, efficient, and cost effective dairy parlour.

Tru-Test Group Product Manager Shane Dooley says whilst there are support devices such as heat mount detectors available, automation enables farmers to gain huge benefits in labour efficiencies and greater heat detection accuracy.

“This was the main driver for Tru-Test in developing the MilkHub Heat Detection system,” he says.

Whilst it is important to remember that all heat detection technologies still need to be used in conjunction with visual observation of recognised standing heat signs in cows and best practice, the MilkHub Heat Detection system, through automation, offers a steep change in reducing labour costs, risk of missing heat, and empty rates and increasing the likelihood of achieving tight calving patterns.

The system is suitable for herringbone and rotary operations.

“Using proven infra red overhead scanning technology (MilkHub Heat Scanner) and New Zealand designed and manufactured self adhesive reflective patches (MilkHub Heat Detectors), the system improves on the benefits of using heat mount detectors by minimising the requirement for visual assessment during milking.

The Octa-Lock design suits the installation requirements for a rotary milking platform. Most buildings can be priced on a square metre rate, and on this basis, the Octa-Lock has a smaller building footprint than conventional buildings for a given turntable size.

The innovative roof structure is supported on eight poles, and the walls are suspended between them, with no footings required. This makes the installation of the drainage, water and power more straightforward and cost effective. The Octa-Locks built to date have housed turntables from 28 — 100 bales.

The kitset nature of the construction allows us to do most of the construction off site. We have the option to complete the

roof structure before the floors, reducing possible delays due to bad weather.

Our innovative design has allowed Fabish and Jackson (2010) Limited to hold a high market share of dairy parlours being built in Taranaki. We have built sheds throughout New Zealand, from Northland to Invercargill. We have also exported a 70 bale parlour to Wales, and a 30 bale to Chile.

At the end of the eighties I decided to register the Tamihana Red Poll Stud and hopefully improve the characteristics that already existed within the breed.

It has been a challenge as during the period from then until now more inferior genetics have been imported into New Zealand than good stuff. The other obstacle was the inability to breed sufficient female progeny needed to increase herd numbers.

Since retiring from dairying in 1998 in the Waikato and moving to a dry-stock property in North Taranaki, my determination to move the breed forward has meant importing semen from performance tested bulls in the USA, England and Australia with the desired result being achieved. Birth weights are around 27kgs with weaning weights at six months, around 270kg.

A Red Poll World Congress Tour is held in a host nation every three years. The initial

tour was held in the native country of the breed (England) in 1972, with successive tours being held in Jamaica, Australia, USA, South America, (Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil) South Africa and New Zealand, where they have domiciled since 1898.

Maungaturoto in the Kaipara has taken on a whole new look for the town and district 150th anniversary celebrations from Friday, November 1 to Sunday, November 3.

“We are issuing a hearty invitation to all of those people in New Zealand with connections to the town and it’s surrounding farming community to make a date to join us in our anniversary events,” says organising committee president, Albie Paton. Registrations for
