The 25-year-old has been involved in the sheep industry all her life. She grew up on her family’s sheep and beef farm near Stratford, took up wool handling in Western Australia, and then completed a shepherd cadetship at Otiwhiti Station.

After graduating, she was employed on the station as a shepherd for a couple of years before returning to work on her family’s 365ha sheep and bull property in Taranaki. She also went shearing, which enabled her to build the capital to buy livestock and lease a 200ha block in Te Popo, Stratford.

In 2014 Katey was chosen to represent New Zealand at the World Young Shepherds competition in France.

This month, Katey joined with the other Beef + Lamb New Zealandsponsored sheep industry ambassador, David Ingham, and sheep industry representatives from Australia and the US at the LambEx conference.

“My role was to represent New Zealand’s sheep industry at the LambEx conference, and bring back knowledge and experience that I had gained to

share with others in the industry here,” said Katey.

“I learned a lot about genetics, traceability, trade and market diversity and this fuelled my intrigue into gaining more knowledge about what goes on beyond the farm gate.”

Katey said there were endless opportunities at LambEx to network with others, young and old, internationally in the sheep industry.

“An amazing group of people to be fortunate enough to be in the presence of over the week.

“I do wish to do more travel in the future to see what others are doing on-farm and how I could implement some beneficial findings either into my own farming system or to others in the industry.

“We will be working with Beef + Lamb New Zealand now to identify opportunities to share our experiences and findings with the industry here, such as attending and speaking at local field days, Beef + Lamb NZ council meetings and talking to media.”

Bee health check survey is important tool Minister of Agriculture Damien O’Connor is urging the country’s beekeepers to complete a survey checking the health of our bee stocks.

The online questionnaire, which will be sent to New Zealand’s registered beekeepers in September, is based on the international Prevention of Honey Bee Colony Losses (COLOSS) survey, which will enable international comparisons. Questions relevant to New Zealand-specific conditions have been added.

Mr O’Connor said pollination underpins our primary industries and the apiculture sector estimates the bees’ busy work is worth $5 billion a year to the New Zealand economy.

“Bees are also vital visitors to our gardens and parks.

“The Ministry for Primary Industries Colony Loss and Survival survey is an important part of the work the government and beekeepers do together to understand bee health, losses and beekeeping practice.”

“Typically only a third of the hardworking apiculture sector of nearly 8,000 registered beekeepers, who look after nearly 900,000 hives, complete the survey,” he said.

“A united sector builds resilience and can take action on the big issues such as hive overstocking rates, access to floral resources, queen bee performance, seasonal variability in climate and production and pest and disease management.”

An upcoming survey for beekeepers is an important tool for assessing the health of New Zealand’s bee stocks

The survey is held at this time of the year as losses expected over winter, due to few nectar sources, provides the most complete picture.

“While bee colony losses in New Zealand are lower than many other countries, we need to monitor trends and collect as much information as possible to protect our bees,” said Mr O’Connor.

for Waitara High School students

by Denise Gunn A small-scale chicken raising project has led a group of Waitara High School students to further develop their skills, and expand into other fields with the venture.

E

nterprise Studies is a new subject on the school’s curriculum. The number of students involved has grown from four in last year’s original start-up group to 12. All of the students are keen to develop their own business ideas and skills.

Under the business venture’s name Renegade.Co, the teenagers, are now producing and selling free-range eggs, live chicken sales, old-fashioned ginger beer and assembling kitset beehives.

‘Enterprise with a purpose’ is the signature line.

The students have also recently purchased three large white/black Devon cross weaners to raise as bacon.

A sty on a neighbouring farm is being used to raise the piglets. An enclosure

to house 20 Muscovy ducks, which were donated by a local farmer, has been completed too with the view towards selling duck eggs.

Student, Kaedyn Wallace, said he chose the subject as it combines his passion for business and the agrifood sector.

“It’s really exciting,” said the 15-year-old.

“We took out a small loan and bought kitset beehives off Trade Me. We’ve assembled them and relisted them at a higher price.”

Teacher, Julie Hill, said the students originally bought up to 30 Hyline chicks from a local hatchery, raising them through until the point of lay and ready for sale.

where students from schools throughout New Zealand develop products and small businesses. Julie said students learn to develop business plans, deliver a pitch to experienced business people, as well as developing and analysing the financial side of a small business.

“These are all some of the skills the students have developed through their involvement in the scheme.”

This year a TeenAg club has also been established with 14 students joining up. Julie said the Waitara High School TeenAg Club and Renegade.Co shares some of the same members.

Dairy awards help BOLSTER FUTURE GOALS

by Denise Gunn Herd manager Mike Gilligan grew up around farming with both of his grandfathers and brothers working in the dairy industry. So it was no surprise when at the age of 15, he decided to pursue dairy farming as a full-time career.

M

ike began his career as a farm assistant on a Waverley dairy farm. He was promoted to 2IC and soon afterwards moved on to another farm assistant position in Okato. A move up the ladder to 2IC followed, and now Mike is the herd manager on Kevin and Diane Goble’s farm. The upcoming season will be his third on this farm, and he has ideal role models as employers. The Gobles won the inaugural New Zealand Sharemilker of the Year title in the 1989–1990 dairy season. Kevin was also the Taranaki Federated Farmers sharemilkers chairman in 1989.

A herd of 550 Holstein Friesians are milked on the 230ha (160ha effective) farm. The production target for this

season is 310,000kgMS, averaging 550–560kgMS for each cow a year.

Although situated near the coast, the farm’s altitude and location near the Kaitake Range results in high annual rainfall.

Mike said normal seasons in the region provide an ideal farming environment on the Goble’s farm.

Our average rainfall in a normal season is around 1.6 metres,” he said.

“Wet springs can cause pasture and soil damage due to the size of the stock we run.

“These are usually handled and minimised by standing cows off if the weather is turning to custard.”

A total of 25ha of maize is grown on the farm and the run-off. A winter

Mike said moving up to the herd manager position was one of his goals.

“I’ve managed to achieve this by staying focussed and positive; picking the brains of my employers to further my knowledge.”

Through staying centred on how to achieve his goals, Mike has worked hard to prove his worthiness to both himself and his employers.

“My biggest achievements are making it to herd manager in the first three years of my career, and progressing to manager next season.” After completing Primary ITO level two machine safety and

“My decision behind entering was to boost my self-confidence and get my name out there,” he said.

“I was in a bit of a shell that I didn’t want to step out of, so I entered and never looked back.”

The 20-year-old has now outlined goals for his future in dairy farming, starting with moving up the ladder to farm manager, then on to contract milking.

“I would like to be lower order sharemilking within the next five to six years.”

Subjects include MCAT, Maths, Science, Chemistry, Biology, and English.

Buying a 40 acre block of land, subdivided from a former sheep and beef farm near Wanganui, gave Walter and Diana Loader a blank canvas to work on.

W

hile Walter, a retired civil engineer, immediately set about laying out the farm on an organised grid pattern, Diana was able to further develop her horticultural passion by planting trees.

Assisted by various family members, windbreaks were planted first, followed by trialling a mixture of fruit and nut trees, which included apricots, almonds, chestnuts, feijoas, hazels, macadamias and walnuts.

Nuts are ready for gathering in May, so Diana aptly named the farm Nuts ‘n May. In 2012, 26 years after Walter and Diana bought the property, the couple sold the farm to their daughter Hel and her partner Scott Wilson.

Walter and Diana continue to live on the property. Diana now has more time to devote to growing show flowers, mainly dahlias and daffodils, and Walter is often found on his ride-on mower checking the progress on farm developments.

The combination of Hel’s interest in horticulture, together with Scott’s mechanical repair knowledge, proved to be essential skills for nut farming.

“Scott grew up in Thames, and I grew up in Wanganui, so while not country folk we had an understanding of rural life,” she said. The couple met in 1990 while working for the Engineers Union.

“While he kept to his trade roots, I went on to working in training and development in a number of industries including brewing, pulp and paper.”

Hel then returned to her love of gardening, managing the horticultural division for an Auckland landscaping company.

“My daughter, Fran, was a baby when my parents started the farm and she has grown up planting trees, driving tractors and herding stock,” said Hel. “I’ve watched her and trees both grow.”

“There is something immensely satisfying in seeing a slender knee-high sapling turn from a stick in the ground into a huge tree that carpets the ground with a bounty of nuts.

“It’s also very humbling as you realise you don’t own land — it owns you.”

As Walter and Diana aged, Scott and Hel spent more time at the farm helping with the harvest, nut selling and doing the heavy work. The farm’s grid of mature deciduous Italian alders, Alnus cordata, protects the 1,000 walnut trees, Juglans regia, as well as assorted fruit and nut trees. The windbreaks are trimmed annually.

“As well as providing protection for the walnuts, which can be top-heavy when cropping, the alder root system fixes nitrogen to the soil,” said Hel. “The root system helps draw water up to the surface, while the hedges slow wind evaporation meaning when other farms are in drought, the orchards stay green. Walnuts are large trees — they are planted, so they have at least 80m2 of space.”

Hel said this helps limit damage and provides airflow for pollination and blight prevention. “We crown lift out mature trees to around three metres to enable access for mowing and harvesting.

Hel alongside the first of the early walnuts that have been bagged up ready for deliveries “Summer pruning helps keep the trees from dragging to the ground when laden with nuts, while major limbing up is done in late autumn once the sap recedes.”

All the young trees in the orchard are fertilised with a mixture of compost, aged animal manure and blood and bone. Older trees are dressed with lime and potash to help fruit set and given a three-yearly application of boron.

Due to Diana’s diligence with pest control in the early stages of establishing the farm, a possum hasn’t been seen on the property for more than 20 years.

“Diana was instrumental in organising a wide possum baiting programme to

provide a predator-free ring around nearby Bushy Park,” said Hel. “The possum programme stopped once the park installed a predator-proof fence, but local initiatives are looking at restarting it.”

Although hedgehogs and rats can be a problem during harvest, the walnuts are collected daily, and pigs clean up surplus nuts. As a result, pests haven’t caused too much of an issue.

“Timms and gas-powered traps are used when needed,” said Hel. “Nuteating birds such as Rosella and Sulphur-crested Cockatoo can also be a pest, but a shotgun usually moves them on.”

The orchards are grazed by sheep during winter and stock removed from under the trees in January. It allows time to mow and groom the orchard blocks in preparation for harvesting. The trees and nuts are spray free.

“We make our own leaf mould, compost and pot ash. Fertilisers that are brought in are sourced from organic ranges such as OrganiBOR.” Geese in the mixed fruit orchard keep the grass short and eat codling moth and other pest larvae.

Berkshire pigs eat windfall fruit and surplus nuts, and in return fertilise the trees.

Sustainable forest solutions The characteristics of a wide variety of tree species that are suited to steep erosion-prone land and which have root structures that may better resist land-sliding after harvest have been detailed in a report for alternative forest plantations.

Written by Dean Satchell of Sustainable Forest Solutions it contributes to present industry considerations of how to lessen the vulnerability of trees now being planted for harvests decades in the future.

“Owners of red-zoned land who wish to clear-fell need to provide regional councils with evidence that significant adverse environmental effects can be minimised. Those landowners should consider an erosion-mitigating forest cover on replant,” says Dean.

“This report provides information on best practice, identifies the gaps in knowledge and sets the scope for the future to improve environmental outcomes from plantation forestry on steep lands.”

Farm Forestry Association president, Neil Cullen, says land and forest managers are lacking in this sort of information for steep, erosionprone terrain.

“This report identifies the considerable amount of research still required but does go a long way to provide guidance on the options for landowners preparing resource consent applications to plant or replant land now zoned red under the new National Environmental Standards for Plantation Forestry. We need more

forests on steep hill country to mitigate erosion where pastoral cover isn’t enough — however, we need the right species, the right rotation lengths and the right harvesting strategies for the best environmental outcomes.

“Forestry is the best land use for erodible hill country, but best practice changes over time to meet the expectations of society and increasing severity of storms. The report lists a variety of alternative species available that could drive different harvest practices and improve environmental outcomes. It’s up to industry to be proactive and adjust their practices to reflect what society requires.

“This report suggests that alternative regimes and or species will be required now, which will accumulate evidence over time that significant adverse environmental effects can be minimised with best practice.”

Forest Owners Association president, Peter Weir, says the report is timely since industry experts are engaging in finding effective ways through forest management and research priorities to build more resilient forests and more resilient communities.

Helping sore joints

At any given time I am helping hundreds of people improve their joint health. My goal is to help prevent further cartilage loss, reduce inflammation and improve the function of the joint. In most cases, we can get significant improvements in joint comfort and mobility.

I have one client who was referred to an orthopaedic specialist with suspected OA in his left knee. It was sore, stiff and swollen. He had X-rays, which confirmed that there was significant cartilage loss and changes to the bones of the joint.

terms, blood vessels allow more fluid into the damaged area — it causes swelling and pain. I have found that OA symptoms are caused as much by inflammation than actual cartilage loss.

The first step is to reduce inflammation. We do this by adding omega-3 from oily fish and antiinflammatory antioxidants especially curcumin from turmeric. The second thing is to add therapeutic amounts of chondroitin sulphate and glucosamine sulphate to stabilise cartilage.

Chondroitin is most important as it is an actual constituent of cartilage but only at levels of 800mg plus daily.

The cost of ownership

A question most smaller-scale farmers are faced with at some point in their year is “Do I do it myself or get someone in?” A decision can be made with some simple calculations and consideration in weighing up the pros and cons.

Farmers should consider whether investing in machinery is affordable for their business, especially the more expensive items such as hay balers, seeders and sprayers, and whether the upgrade will generate further revenue or become a drain on resources.

Upgrading or purchasing new equipment has benefits, such as maintaining control of jobs and getting them completed when required, and the individual farmer may also have the skill level required, but at times when there are several jobs demanding attention — it can be easier to call a contractor for assistance.

Doing so frees up the farmer’s time for other tasks, and contractors generally have the right tools for the job — and can get the job done faster. Hiring a contractor is also a tax deduction for businesses.

There are services available for a range of farm tasks ranging from paddock preparations, crop planting and

harvesting to animal management and husbandry practices such as lamb and calf marking, crutching and shearing.

The costs of repair and maintenance, as well as registration and overall care of plant and machinery, falls on the contractor.

On the other hand, at times of peak demand, such as haymaking, for example, a contractor can be held up or run behind schedule, or bad weather may affect the job’s completion, resulting in penalties for the farmer.

Building a good relationship with a reliable contractor is essential to success, as is working in with

neighbours to secure several jobs for the contractor while in the area.

Ownership costs are relatively high if a machine is only used for a short time during the year, such as a hay baler, but some implements, for instance, a tractor, can be used often, so there may be a ‘break even’ point when the cost is calculated over a per hectare basis.

When evaluating machinery options, farmers should not only consider the capital cost of the equipment — but also their seasonal challenges and the risk of delays in getting the job done on time.

Great fence, man!

There is not much better to a farmer’s eye than looking down a straight fence line, all the posts in perfect position, no tops poking one way or another, and all the same height. A simple feat to achieve? Not if your fencing contractor doesn’t have the skills!

It’s important to choose someone who will do the job you want done. You need to be specific about your needs, and these needs may vary depending on the location of the fence.

For example, a new fence along your driveway, or that is visible every time you look out your house window; you are going to want that completely perfect, compared to a short length down on the back boundary that you mostly look at from the paddock as opposed to down the line.

You will need to establish with your contractor whether they are supplying all materials for a complete job, or whether they will use items you already have available, which would save you money on the job. If you already have a box of fencing staples in the shed or three to four rolls of clean wire — there is no point in them supplying those for the job.

Next, are they collecting the required materials and bringing to the job or is it feasible for you to provide what they need? It may be another cost saver for you.

Arranging payment terms is another consideration. Do they require some of the payment up front to purchase posts, or will they invoice you the total amount at completion? Will that payment be required within seven days or on 20th of next month?

One more thing to think about — does your neighbour need any work done? It could be worth asking, particularly if either of you only have a small job needing done, as it may save the contractor some running around with their post driver! When the job is complete, and you can cast an eye down that tidy new fence, you’ll appreciate the money invested in not doing the job yourself and consequently annoyed at the one post that leans the wrong way!

It is a view that farmers definitely do not want to see — their precious farmland returned to gorse scrub — and completely eradicating it is an ongoing challenge.

Gorse is a particularly stubborn plant to remove permanently, as it thrives in poor soils and its seeds remain viable for around 40 years.

Burning can be successful but needs to be done with accuracy regarding temperature and depth into the soil.

Ploughing often doesn’t have a huge success rate, as cultivating the soil aids the germination process, and the resulting acidity of the soil means few other plants or trees will do well.

There are many organic ways of trying, some of which actually work, though take some patience and persistence.

For example, small plants can be grubbed out successfully if the entire root crown is removed, or running sheep through followed by goats will graze the soft seedlings although work will need to be done in controlling the regrowth, and they will not eat the more mature parts of the plant.

Biological control is another method, though a very long-term project, and researchers believe this method could

take up to 50 years to achieve a favourable result.

An efficient and fast way to remove the gorse plants is to use an appropriate weedkiller, and depending on the area and location a contractor may be required.

There is an obvious cost involved in this option, in paying for the spray and the service if the landowner is not in a position to do it themselves.

A contractor may use any of several options for application, from small spray units behind a bike or tractor to the use of a helicopter for efficient coverage over a large area.

There may still be a small amount of regrowth if some plants don’t receive enough herbicide, and a repeat procedure may be required, but persistence and perseverance should prove productive.

The dream to build

Whether you are designing and building yourself, or buying set plan, there’s nothing more exciting than a brand-new house or fullyrenovated historic home.

Whether you are living on a farm, lifestyle block or in an urban setting, the kiwi dream is home ownership and no matter what scale you are thinking, it is important to have an understanding of council regulations for your area, contracts and exclusions, time frames for the project completion, costs and possible hidden extras.

The time difference for project completion varies and generally unless you are buying a ‘house package’ an accurate final quote can be difficult, particularly if you are not set in your plans and ideas. Every ‘change’ you make once the build is underway will add to your costs as you are charged for such so ensure you have a set layout of the complete house design before starting.

Ensure when you are asking for quotes that you are comparing the same things because at times cheaper quotes will leave out items you have to put in later, or under-quote on items your contractor expects you to change later.

It is suggested that you allocate at least 10 per cent extra funding for unforeseen costs to help keep stress to a minimum.

standards, sign off and maintenance.

When requesting a build with your own plans a good way to estimate the cost is to engage a Quantity Surveyor to price your project.

Group home builders will generally be cheaper for one of their standard plans; however, these can be restrictive in the options you can choose. Designing with an architectural draughtsman will usually give you what you ask for, and an architect will give you a lot more, but you may find that what you want is more expensive than what you initially expected to pay.

Check the reputation of the builder you choose and be wary of altering any contract with variations unless it is agreed to in writing and discuss progress payments in advance where necessary. Ensure your financial institution is reputable, have personal and builders’ public liability insurances in place before your build begins. With all builds, ensure you read and understand

The journey through this home begins with a concrete front fence embossed with the street number. Entering the front court via the steel gate is a lushly vegetated entry patio framed by concrete walls and large concrete soffit overhang, finishing with a large, solid cedar door.

Once inside the eye is drawn through the home to the finely crafted timber and steel stairs — followed by the open living space with a sophisticated white, black and timber kitchen. To create a sense of space and light the volume of the open plan living areas is extended vertically through a dining room double height space and a 3.6m lounge ceiling.

Upstairs there is the master bedroom suite, separate living room and office nook — city, mountain and coastal views are gained from this level. The master

suite enjoys a generous walk through wardrobe and luxurious en-suite.

Structure is strongly expressed in this home with the concrete ground floor, concrete walls and steel beams all fully exposed. The upper floor is also concrete. The roof is timber-framed.

Further expression of detail is seen through the structure of the staircase with its steel verticals providing both support and aesthetic.

Joining with India Fonterra has joined with one of India’s largest consumer companies, Future Consumer Ltd, to help meet the growing demand for high-quality dairy nutrition in India.

“The partnership, under the name Fonterra Future Dairy Partners, will enable Fonterra to establish a presence in India,” said Fonterra’s chief operating officer Global Consumer and Foodservice, Lukas Paravicini.

“It will allow us to prepare the groundwork and make the most of our expertise as we enter the world’s largest and fastest growing dairy industry.

Consumer demand for dairy in India over the next seven years is set to increase by 82 billion litres — seven times the forecasted growth for China.

“The partnership will be driven by growth through profitability. The initial stages of the partnership will focus on product development and marketing with the right capital investment made during this period. The first consumer products will be launched by the middle of 2019, using both locally sourced milk and dairy products from New Zealand.

“We will also use this time to settle in the partnership infrastructure, learn the market and prioritise geographies.”

Fonterra MD Sri Lanka and Indian subcontinent, Sunil Sethi, said that India was also witnessing the emergence of new FMCG organisations like Future Consumer, which has a deep understanding of the Indian consumer, the experience of working with international partners, and a nationwide supply chain and retail network.

Managing in mud Wet and muddy conditions are to be expected on farms at this time of year, and the Ministry for Primary Industries is reminding all pastoral livestock farmers to ensure animals are well cared for on crops and pasture, and seek advice if they need to.

“We recognise that this time of year brings many challenges, and managing stocking densities, pasture, break feeding on crops and minimising soil damage are just some of these,” says MPI’s director of Animal Health and Welfare, veterinarian Dr Chris Rodwell.

“Farmers must be vigilant to not compromise animal health and welfare during these challenging months of the year. New Zealand’s codes of animal welfare generally require livestock to have access to areas free of surface water and mud and appropriate protection from adverse weather.”

Rest and lying time is important to the health and welfare of livestock, not just feed availability and body condition of animals.

“Welfare issues may not be immediately obvious. Amongst a number of issues, prolonged time on mud can also cause distress and discomfort, bring on significant and painful animal health issues such as lameness and mastitis, and reduce production and resistance to disease.”

Deer velvet looking good Long-term prospects for New Zealand velvet in the major Asian markets are looking positive with an explosion in demand for consumer-ready velvet-based products in Korea.

“Ten years ago this product category didn’t even exist,” says Deer Industry NZ Asia manager, Rhys Griffiths.

“In the past six months, 23 new velvet-based healthy food products have been launched in Korea — the majority of them using New Zealand velvet.

“Yuhan Pharmaceuticals, which signed a memorandum of understanding with DINZ last year, is now a major player in this market. Their impressive New Origin concept store/cafe in Seoul features recently launched products that contain New Zealand velvet and deer farm imagery on large video screens inside.” Mr Griffiths says the Chinese market for velvet has yet to make the leap into consumer-ready healthy food products, but many manufacturers are aware of what has happened in Korea and believe it can be repeated in China.

“The main barrier is a lack of confidence in the path to market for consumer products based on New Zealand velvet. These products cost millions of dollars to develop and market, so manufacturers need to be convinced they are not infringing

a rule or regulation along the way.”

To provide confidence to potential customers, DINZ is working with some exporters and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise to commission a report by a respected Chinese regulatory expert on the pathway to market. This report will be provided to key manufacturers when it has been completed.

“In the last three years to improve consumer safety, there has been a major tightening of the rules and regulations governing food and traditional medicines in China. This has included tighter standards for overseas suppliers. As a result, New Zealand velvet producers have had to create clean areas in their deer sheds and to meet tougher cold chain requirements. In China, velvet processors have had to make similar upgrades — some have built completely new factories.”

A major new Chinese super ministry is being established that is expected to have regulatory oversight of the trade in traditional medicines and manufactured health foods. Until the new regulatory regime is operating, manufacturers will

be uncertain about the rules that will apply to their operations.

“A further unsettling factor has been the recent clamp down on importers for importing illegal products and for evading customs duties. Some smaller

velvet importers have been prosecuted,” he says. “Larger, reputable importers say this will be a good thing in the longrun for the reputation of imported velvet and particularly for New Zealand. It will tidy up the industry.”

Supporting moves to significantly reduce emissions and meet our Paris Agreement commitments should not be at the expense of New Zealanders’ economic and social wellbeing.

Federated Farmers climate change spokesperson, Andrew Hoggard, says “we need a clear roadmap to a low net emissions economy and a long-term plan of action that endures political cycles.

“New Zealand should not lock itself into an inflexible approach that disadvantages us more than other nations. In the decades to 2050, we will also be grappling with the major cost implications of an ageing population.

We must have regard for the impact various ‘net zero’ options would have on emissions prices and on GDP, jobs and incomes.”

In its submission on the Zero Carbon bill, Federated Farmers said the best option of the three put forward in the ‘Our Climate Your Say’ discussion paper was the ‘two baskets’ approach that focussed on reductions in longlived greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide) while stabilising short-lived emissions (methane).

“New Zealand’s primary industries earned 64 per cent of our total merchandise export income in 2017/18, not to mention the several billion dollars of food produced for domestic consumption. We have an unsubsidised but highly efficient agricultural sector, which is markedly exposed to competition from moderately to highly subsidised producers in

other nations,” says Mr Hoggard.

“Successive governments have worked hard to remove barriers to trade. It would be counterproductive for future governments to impose costs on our producers that would undermine those trade gains.

“The wrong policies could reduce our emissions-efficient food production, a gap that will be filled by much less emissions-efficient producers overseas.

We lose economically, and so does the planet in terms of global warming and climate change.”

The Federation’s submission said regardless of which 2050 target is adopted; agricultural biological emissions should not come under the ETS until cost-effective mitigations are available to farmers and our international competitors make similar moves.

It also noted the great potential for forest and other woody vegetation to sequester carbon, including the establishment of new commercial forests, farm woodlots, shelter belts, slope stability, erosion control planting and riparian planting.

“We are very concerned about the potential for climate change policy to drive large-scale land use change from sheep and beef farming to forestry, when it is farming that underpins the social, economic and employment viability of rural communities.”

The notion that foresters will want to plant on marginal land is highly questionable.

“Resource management, health and safety and economic factors are shifting

new commercial forestry planting to land that is easy to maintain, and close to transport and processing infrastructure — the sort of land currently farmed.”

Return of the warrior

Suzuki has been producing a small, super-compact off-roader under various names for the past 40 years now — the Samurai was the first in this lineage, and the current Jimny is the latest. In between, we’ve seen the boxy, military-jeep inspired form move with the times, but the recipe has remained the same.

It’s one beloved of real off-roaders — take a peppy, high-revving engine, add a generous amount of ground clearance, simple, wheel-at-each-corner chassis design, a gearbox and differentials, which can take the hard knocks, and wrap it up in a price which makes the big boys of the off-road world look bloated and expensive. Like the light little Caterham on the race track or the Toyota MR2 on the road, it’s an exercise in cutting right to the core of what a machine should do, then adding absolutely nothing unnecessary.

Which brings us to the latest iteration of the Jimny. It has added something, which the outgoing model doesn’t have, inspired, perhaps, by the success of the retro-cool Ignis, also in the Suzuki stable. It looks fantastic.

Cute as a button but still sharp-edged and eager, like a Rottweiler puppy or a baby version of Mercedes’ G-Wagen.

The crisp, boxy creases and sharp lines hint at serious off-road chops, evoking everything from the old Willy’s world war two jeep through to the first edition Toyota Land Cruiser.

Moreover, because it’s part of the Samurai-Escudo-Jimny heritage, it has

a 1.5 litre four-pot motor, proper fourwheel drive with high and low ratios, and that absurdly lightweight to actually deliver on its promises.

For decades, the smallest Suzuki off-roader in the garage has offered
